At Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville, N.C.

bike blessing

On Saturday April 6th Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville held the first annual NC Sand Hills Bike Blessing. The weather was outstanding which made it even better for the 250 plus Bikers that came out to have their bikes blessed. Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville sponsored the event to simply pray. To pray for those who ride, for their protection and to pray for those who don’t ride, to be more aware and alert of motorcyclists. They also prayed for the protection and safety of those who are serving in our Military. Ray Price Triumph of Fayetteville, Cape Fear Harley Davidson of Fayetteville and Cycle Works of Lumberton were on site along with many other local vendors. Food Done Right served some mighty fine burgers & BBQ and the Chocolate Lady satisfied everyone with her amazing chocolate desserts! Wow! The Freedom House band rocked the place (these guys are excellent), and they had a lot of great door prizes. If you missed this year’s event and want your Bike Blessed check them out one Sunday... Hangout at 10 am and service at 10:45 am.

Wyoming Gas Stop While going through some old pictures from past motorcycle rides I found this image (rt) taken in out-back Wyoming. The Breakfast Club was riding to Sturgis and we had just ridden through the Rocky Mountain National Park and through the city of Estes. Steve Orand was leading the ride and said we had enough gas to keep going and he knew of a gas station further north on Hwy 25 where we were to cut-off through Wyoming. When we got to the point where the gas station was supposed to be all we saw was a pile of old wood where a building had once stood. Since there was nothing within miles of this exit we were committed to keep riding a look for another source of gas. It wasn’t long before our reserve lights were burning brightly, and there was no option but to keep riding. As we continued to ride no one uttered a word as we willed our bikes to keep going. We were in the middle of vast open prairie with nothing visible as far as the eye could see. Greg was hunched up behind his windshield trying to minimize wind resistance when I looked to my left and there in the ditch nearly hidden by the brush was what I assumed was the last rider that had not stopped for gas before heading across Wyoming!

your Health Behind Barz

The “C” Word….. I have heard of so many brothers and sisters RIP due to the “C” word…cancer. Cancer is a disease with no exact known causes. They say it may run in the family, be as a result of exposure to radiation, or chemical exposure, to smoking, alcohol, the food we eat, viruses, well most anything. For your information a tumor is a new growth of abnormal cells. Tumors can be benign or malignant, and that is not your age or being naughty. Benign tumors are tumors that grow slowly and are usually in a localized area. Benign tumors usually do not cause death. Malignant tumors (cancer) grow rapidly and will invade healthy tissue all over the body. Death may occur if the cancer is not treated, controlled or God heals you. When the cancer spreads the medical term is metastasis. There are 7 warning signs of cancer; they can be defined by CAUTION. C - Change in bowel or bladder habits A – A sore that does not heal U - Unusual bleeding or discharge from a body opening

BARZ

T - Thickening or lump in the breast or else where in the body I – Indigestion or difficulty swallowing O - Obvious change in a wart or mole N - Nagging cough or hoarseness Be sure to be watch your body, if there is anything you are concerned about go to your local doctor and get it checked out. I want you to be able to keep the rubber to the road, knees in the breeze and Behind Barz in your hands.

Killer Kustom Plan, research & decide

By: Jeff Cambre Photos: Dee “One More” James

14

My motto: Plan, Research and Decide has been the driving force behind the design theme for this Road Glide. I have spent countless hours staring at magazines and looking at other bikes before deciding what direction I wanted to take with this machine. Once I decided, it was time to start making changes. As this was my first experience with trying to customize an already great machine, I needed some help in deciding what to do first. My first stop was meeting David White at Cumberland County Customs and Chris Sellers at Sellers Paint and Body. Almost immediately, I knew I wanted more power and a stronger motor, so the guys from Cape Fear HD got to work and contacted T-Man Performance; we converted the stock 96ci to the 103ci, generating a 122hp to the rear wheel. T-Man Performance provided a set of ported and polished heads, cylinders, custom forged pistons, 625 cams, and, to top it off, a larger throttle body and Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner. Next was deciding on what cosmetic changes to make. My first choice was to get a set of Sinister Industries saddlebags, Hot Rod lids, flared side covers, and rear fender to cover up and accent the Performance Machine 17x6 Contrast Cut Platinum Wrath wheel that shines from beneath the machine and covers a set of Legend Air-Suspension shocks that give it that low-rider sinister look when the air is let out. The next step was almost by accident and would turn out to be a no brainer when it came to deciding on whether to extend the tank or do a direct replacement. Without question, going to a Paul Yafee full metal replacement tank has been one of the best changes I could have made. The wider stance and design fills up the space with lots of room for paint and the larger capacity is great for fewer stops at the gas station depending on who and how I ride with and to compliment the larger motor that resided below.

Not forgetting that you need to see me coming before you see me pass, I started making changes to the front of the machine as well. My first step was to add a Performance Machine 21x3.5 Contrast Cut Platinum Wrath wheel, which I have plans on changing into a 26x3.5 in the near future. To top off the wheel I then added an FBI Fat Baggers International 21 metal wrap around fender, followed by a set of Arlen Ness Smooth Hot Legs for baggers forks, a set of HHI Hawg Halter International 6-piston calipers, a set of Paul Yafee Yafterburner fork boots to accent the contrast cut in the PM 21 wheel, and an FBI chin spoiler to cover up the voltage regulator on the bottom. My next decision was what to do about the dash and gauges. Since the dash was replaced as part of the gas tank that was taken care of, so I then quickly decided on a bright red set of Dakota Digital Gauges and wrapped them up in a Big Baller Gauge Housing to compliment the red LED lights that sit in the Sinister rear fender and Sinister Slam PAk that completes the rear end and gives it that mean look when I drive down the road. In addition to replacing the stock head lights with a set of HID lights I also replaced the stock head light bezel with a Sinister Pissed Off Headlight Bezel to compliment the already intensified look of the brighter HIDs. My last stop was to add some kicking tunes to this already bad-ass ride and with the help of Jim Nazi and some focal speaker and amp the overall experience from the roar of the motor to cries of Metallica and the likes is nothing but loud...loud...and louder as I cruise down the road.

Every day is Earth Day for motorcyclists Motorcycles take up less space than cars and trucks both during operation, and when parked. They reduce traffic congestion and, in so doing, help increase the efficiency of traffic flow on the road. PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- As conservation takes center stage on April 22, 2013 for Earth Day, the American Motorcyclist Association salutes motorcyclists and all-terrain vehicle riders nationwide who do volunteer work on public land. The AMA also salutes street riders, noting there are many environmental benefits to commuting and traveling on a motorcycle or scooter. “For motorcyclists, every day is Earth Day,” said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. “Off-highway riders enjoy the outdoors and respect the land, sometimes even carrying out other people’s trash from remote areas. Street riders -- whether on a motorcycle or a scooter -- have a positive impact on the environment and their rides result in a more enjoyable, lesscongested experience for all road users.” Every year, thousands of off-highway riders and employees of motorcycle-related companies roll up their sleeves to restore and maintain forest areas by planting trees, cutting brush, picking up trash and onating tens of thousands of man-hours or more to those efforts. Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. employees alone have restored more than 12 acres of forest land over the past five years at the San Bernardino National Forest in California. AMA member Robert Langley, who recently received the AMA Outstanding Off-Road Rider Award, was hailed by the Washington state Department of Natural Resources as one of its top volunteers statewide in 2012 for donating up to 1,000 hours of work a year. When it comes to street riding, a typical motorcycle can provide fuel mileage that exceeds that of most fuel-efficient automobiles. Many motorcycles return more than 50 miles per gallon, and many scooters can deliver nearly twice that. In addition to using less fuel, motorcycles require less oil and other chemicals to operate. And the recent introduction of electric motorcycles provides an added benefit for the environment.

18

Significantly fewer raw materials are utilized to produce motorcycles and scooters compared to cars and trucks. By some measures, it requires thousands of pounds less metal and plastic per vehicle to produce a motorcycle. The environmental benefits are realized both during production, as well as at the end of the vehicle’s useful life. Because motorcycles and scooters are so much more compact and lighter than cars and trucks, they cause far less wear and tear on the highways, reducing the cost and environmental impact of infrastructure repairs. In addition, because of their size, many more motorcycles can be transported from factory to consumer using the same or less energy. “When you add it all up, there is no question: If everyone rode motorcycles, the planet would be a greener, less congested place,” Dingman said. “And just as important, more of us would experience the thrill and freedom that motorcycles provide. Riding is not just easy on your bank account and the planet, riding is a fun, and often a social activity that simply makes life more enjoyable.” Those interested in coming along for the ride are encouraged to visit AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Riding > Getting Started for more information about the benefits of motorcycling. About the American Motorcyclist Association Founded in 1924, the AMA is a not-for-profit member-based association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. As the world’s largest motorcycling rights and event sanctioning organization, the AMA advocates for riders’ interests at all levels of government and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events every year. The AMA also provides money-saving discounts on products and services for its members. Through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA honors the heroes and heritage of motorcycling. For more information, visit www.americanmotorcyclist.com.

Spyder Experience!!!

Ya know there ain’t nothin’ like havin’ a North American arachnid with wheels in front! Now to translate… There is nothing like a Can-Am Spyder! Now let me bend your ear for a moment and explain…. In March I went to Performance East Power Sports in Goldsboro, North Carolina, to look at their Can-Am Spyders. Mr. Travis came out to talk to me and showed me the three models that they have, the RT, ST, and RS Spyder. He explained the differences in each, and invited me to sit on them to see how they feel. My body has been through some changes in the last year since the accident and I personally needed to see if I could sit comfy to ride again. Oh, oh, oh, the joy to sit on a Spyder and be Behind Barz! I just sat there smiling and Mr. Travis asked if I would like to go for a test drive... hummmm…don’t ask me twice, as I walked to get my helmet, gloves and boots from my car. Mr. Hank came from the service department and did a very thorough introduction to the Can-Am Spyder RT-SE5. He covered from the start-up to braking, to the semiautomatic shifting which is done with the thumb and fingers. He explained to me the computer diagnostics and how the bike is checked electronically each time there is a start-up. He pulled out the card on the Spyder, over the dash, which reminds riders to check things out before they start to be safe. Once started and in a safe neutral with the parking brake on, he went over the computer screen and the options available AM/FM Radio, CB option, Garmin option, the setting of the screen for time, mileage, temperature, language (yes the Spyder is multi lingual)

26 26

where the I-Pod or MP3 would come in if attached in the back trunk, cruise control, and oh so much more was introduced!!! Then again, Mr. Hank, reviewed safety before I was allowed to test drive. I did have butterflies in my belly for my test drive, said a quick quiet prayer, and they were soon flying in formation when I pulled out. I drove around the test drive area and was encouraged to take as long as I needed at the speed I was comfortable with to see if the Spyder and I fit. I did notice that my healing leg was bothered being bent for an extended amount of time. I thought about it, and discovered if I lifted my leg and straightened it out a bit I felt a lot better. The accounting manager and I found some nifty highway pegs to be put on my Spyder and that helped me be a lot more comfortable! There is nothing like a bike customized to fit you when you ride. Performance East delivered my Can-Am Spyder RT-SE5 to my house and provided 1:1 instruction for safety, shifting and all the options that were installed. Every button I could find was pushed and a very patient explanation was given. A DVD was given to me to watch to teach on safety, exercises to practice to learn how to control and turn a Spyder safely. You might say it was a Spyder 101 class. Thank-you Performance East in Goldsboro, North Carolina, for your time, patience, customization and delivery of the Mighty Fine Spyder RT to the Lady D!!

Been There, S

Putting Smiles on the F

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

Every month has several themes. One of the themes for April is Month of the Military Child. I was honored to ride with the Patriot Guard Riders for a flag raising ceremony at Butner Elementary School on Ft Bragg, NC. When we arrived, many of us revved our engines and blasted our horns. The kids cheered and clapped! Many thanks to Ft Bragg Police in escorting us to the school and ensuring we arrived safely. I had a dogrific time seeing Principal Joiner again and meeting other teachers and students. I was in a few group photos and when we were leaving the school, I wandered into two classrooms to sniff-ello (sniff them hello) the kids.

Riders behind us on our way to Butner Elementary School. children of our service members have challenges that many children don’t have, like having to move every couple of years, having your dad or mom deploying to defend us, a parent being at sea for a very long time, a parent being assigned to a place where the family can’t go, and many more challenges. Even routine training can be dangerous. My mom remembers the first time (it happened a couple of times) in which my driver was injured during a night airborne training exercise. (For my civilian friends, airborne soldiers are the paratroopers who jump from perfectly good planes in full combat gear, such as the 82nd Airborne Division.) My mom received a call at o’dark thirty and the first thing the Sergeant Major said was something like “Mrs. Ewing, your husband’s alive. He gave me an order to not tell you anything and to just tell you he’s running late. So, he’s running late.” My mom knew to go to Womack Army Hospital.

Meeting the class at Butner Elementary School! I wonder why some people call the children “brats,” such as Army brat, military brat, etc. Brat has at least two meanings. One meaning is that of a spoiled or ill-mannered child. The other meaning is the child of a military service member. I’m barking about the child of military service members, because, in my doggy opinion and generally barking,

A few of the PGR at Flag Raising Ceremony at Butner Elementary School for Month of the Military Child. What does being a military brat mean to my driver and my mom? It means one or both of the child’s parents are willing to sacrifice their lives for our country. That fact makes the children of our service members very, very special. I bark the same thing for children of law enforcement officers and firefighters – not all of them may be putting their lives on the line for our country, but they are certainly risking their lives for the communities they serve. Seeing how only about 3% of Americans serve our country through the Armed Forces, I wonder how many people really and truly understand the sacrifices from each child and their families. Former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger may have declared April as the Month of the Military Child, but we should honor our military families every day. It’s not just the service member making sacrifices – it’s the spouses, children and even the fur-kids!

Craig Hardy leading the ride in remembrance of Ed “Tail Gunner” Williams. When you say your prayers, please include the children of our military service members, and especially the children and families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while in service to our country. Is that all we did over the past two months? Nope. We did lots more cool things. We rode in honor of a friend who passed away on March 28, 2012: Ed “Tail Gunner” Williams. We rode to the Veteran’s Memorial in Broadway, NC and participated in a wreath ceremony to honor and remember Ed. Ed is the co-founder of Operation Helping Hands for Heroes, who helped us on our Ride across the USA for Heroes in May 2012. Ed was also a member of other organizations such as Rolling Thunder, Raleigh H.O.G., Patriot Guard Riders and more. I met Ed on my very first group ride, which was with Raleigh H.O.G. for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Been There, Sniffed That

Continued from page 31

We also attended the Chili Cook-Off at Shelton H-D in Durham, as well as the Brunswick Stew Cook-Off at Ray Price H-D in Raleigh. My driver kept me away from the chili in Durham, so I spent a lot of time with my friends at the USO and Rolling Thunder. At the Brunswick Stew Cook-Off, I sampled every competitors stew – one of the teams bribed me with a slice of sausage! By the end of the day, no one in my family wanted to be near me because I had a gas leak under my tail. I also attended the wedding of Brian and Angela Adams at Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville. At the wedding, I saw Will Jewell, who was the ring bearer. It’s been a while since I saw Will, the Gold Star Son of Steven R. Jewell, Specialist, US Army, KIA 16 August 2007, Iraq. Will is a cool young man and he’s been on several missions with the Patriot Guard. On the topic of military service members giving the ultimate sacrifice for our country, my driver and I are pawing away at creating an application for my website. The app will be called Chewy’s Gold Star Roster App (or something like that). We can find rosters of military heroes killed in action on various websites, but we have yet to find one that is all about honoring the heroes from our Gold Star Families. We understand that being killed in action deserves honor and respect from every American, but we also have military service members who die while in service to our country, but not in combat. They died serving us and they earned the same honor and respect. So far, my driver and I have assembled names from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as other such as Beirut, USS Cole, Desert Storm, Urgent Fury, Just Cause, and more. The challenge is finding names of those who died while on active duty, but not in combat or a military operation – we want to honor and remember them by adding them to the database we’re building. We have researched for about two years and to our knowledge, there is no true Gold Star roster – a list of service members who died while in service to our country. If anyone comes across a list of all service members who died while on active duty, please give us a bark.

whiskey Dick’s On April 6, 2013 the sun is finally shining. Warmer weather means it is time to ride. Whisky Dick’s met the challenge and sponsored a ride to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

For those who don’t know about Multiple Sclerosis, Multiple sclerosis is a mysterious, often frustrating disease. Multiple sclerosis or MS is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in loss of muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation (such as numbness). With MS, the nerves of the brain and spinal cord are damaged by one's own immune system. Thus, the condition is called an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are those whereby the body's immune system, which normally targets and destroys substances foreign to the body such as bacteria, mistakenly attacks normal tissues. In MS, the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord, the two components of the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of nerves that act as the body's messenger system. Each nerve is covered by a fatty substance called myelin, which insulates the nerves and helps in the transmission of nerve impulses, or messages, between the brain and other parts of the body. These messages control muscle movements, such as walking and talking. MS gets its name from the buildup of scar tissue (sclerosis) in the brain and/or spinal cord. The scar tissue or plaques form when the protective and insulating myelin covering the nerves is destroyed, a process called demyelination. Without the myelin, electrical signals transmitted throughout the brain and spinal cord are disrupted or halted. The brain then becomes unable to send and to receive messages. It is this breakdown of communication that causes the symptoms of MS. Although the nerves can regain myelin, this process is not fast enough to outpace the deterioration that occurs in MS. The types of symptoms, severity of symptoms, and the course of MS vary widely, partly due to the location of the scar tissue and the extent of demyelination. MS is two to three times as common in females as in males and its occurrence is unusual before adolescence. A person has an increased risk of developing the disease from the teen years to age 50, with the risk gradually declining thereafter.

One of Whisky Dick’s own employees Christie lives with MS and her friend Elizabeth who also lives with MS, shared that they take the opportunity to do what you can…when you can. They have good days and bad days. They have some tremors and have down days and then good days to get out and about. Each wonderful, strong, lady has different symptoms and ways to deal with MS, and the love that was shown to help the MS Society meant a lot to them. Elizabeth shared that she will hold her grandbaby with her tremors and she is able to shake her grandbaby gently to sleep when he has a hard time sleeping. What a way to make a bad situation good with love. Whisky Dick’s showed a lot of love and respect for those who live with MS. They had a poker run during the day and at night they held a concert with Daily Blues playing and the cover charges were donated to MS society. Then they had a bake sale, 50/50, and wonderful items were auctioned off. A nice amount was donated!!! Biker Salute and Thank you Whisky Dick’s!!

Cabin Fever Poker Run

story: Lady D photos: Moe

On March 23, 2013 the 7th Cabin Fever Poker Run was held in Goldsboro, North Carolina by the Goldsboro HOG Chapter. The Cabin Fever Poker Run is held in memory of Donna Kirby who passed away with cardiac problems. Her Husband, Ernie, has ridden in all of the Cabin Fever Poker Runs since their inception. The Poker Run was held under cloudy skies as the sun was too shy to come out to watch, but that did not discourage the many riders who came. There were door prizes, 50/50 tickets, great food, fellowship, and entertainment. Many different M/C and R/C participated. All monies raised were donated to the American Heart Association. As the kick stands went up, the roar of the pipes filled the air, a thought came to me that there is nothing like the roar of the motorcycle pipes in sync with the bikers hearts that beat, they are those who care, who love, to live and ride for our brothers and sisters. All have hearts of love, care, and concern for fellow bikers and bikers in their hearts. What a great way to remember and honor Donna Kirby!

Burn ‘em if ya got ‘em! David Aldana, today, living a life of serenity.

freedom ride women to ride cross country for veterans and their caregivers

On July 21, women from all corners of the United States are meeting at Low Country Harley Davidson in Charleston, SC to participate in the first annual Women’s Freedom Ride. This is a cross country motorcycle ride in support of other women riders and the nation’s veterans from the War on Terrorism and their caregivers. The unsung heroes of our active duty military are most often those left behind when the troops deploy. Today’s military and veterans receive support from all sorts of organizations, but the Independence Fund helps both, the veterans and their caregivers. When a soldier returns home with a major injury, it is the wives or mothers who are left to provide all of the long time care. The reason the Women’s Freedom Ride chose to support the Independence Fund in this ride because of all of the organizations that provide help and assistance to the nations wounded heroes, this organization is one of the only groups that does not have any paid employees. It is run completely by volunteers. This is also one of the few organizations that help the caregivers as well as the veterans. Many of the women who have signed up for the ride are mothers, wives or daughters of a veteran. “I got involved after I found out my son is being deployed to Afghanistan.....if anything were to happen to him, I want him to know that myself and thousands of other people would be there supporting him!!” explains Penni Fuller. What many people forget is that the wives and mothers of our veterans are not just those who are left behind to take care of the home when the men deploy, but they are also the ones who have to help put the pieces back together when the men come home injured. “The efforts of the Women's Freedom Ride both humble and inspire us at the same time,” explains Steve Danyluk, President and Founder of the Independence Fund. “As it is generally women who become primary caregivers for the severely wounded veterans it is particularly touching to see a group of women taking this extraordinary cross country journey in part to honor the service and sacrifice of these unsung heroes of the War on Terror, the caregivers.” Even though the goal of the Women’s Freedom Ride is to raise money for the Independence Fund, it is more about women supporting and helping other women. Currently there are approximately 30 women who have pledged to participate in the ride with many more joining along the way. To check out our fundraising efforts or for more info about the Women’s Freedom Ride, please visit us on the web at www.womensfreedomride.com or follow us on Facebook.

Raleigh Pink Ribbon Ride 7th Annual

Written by Peggy Canevari The 7th Annual Raleigh Pink Ribbon Ride was held on April 14, 2013 at Scooter’s Bar & Grill in Raleigh. We were blessed with perfect riding and party weather as the sun shone down on us in our beloved Carolina blue skies. Our day began with registration and sausage biscuits donated by Waffle House. Each rider received an event t-shirt, pink towel and breast cancer awareness bandanna to display on their bikes during the ride. Bernadette Pickles, of the Pretty in Pink Foundation, gave a very heart-warming and eye opening talk about how the proceeds from this event would impact woman and men, in our area, with breast cancer, who have either no insurance or not enough to pay for the lifesaving treatment they need. All monies raised at this event go directly to patient care! Team Powersports started the ride, to everyone’s amazement, with a pink burnout that billowed pink smoke over the entire crowd and was rewarded with a round of cheers and applause. A procession of 318 motorcycles of all makes and models and 470 riders then proceeded from Scooter’s on a beautiful country road journey to Wake Forest’s Carolina Ale House for some rest and refreshments. The Wake County Sheriff’s Department along with the Raleigh PD and the No Rules Riders escorted us safely for the entire ride. As in past years, “Miss Pinkie”, the pink propane truck of McCraken Propane, led the way with her beloved driver, Mike Epps, at the wheel. Imagine what a sight to behold to see this pink truck followed by over 300 motorcycles, a pink tow truck and white hummer “pinked out” traveling down the road! All traffic stopped or pulled over to the side of the road in disbelief and a sign of respect. We were humbled. Back at Scooter’s we were greeted with cheers, BBQ pork lunch, provided by Scooter’s, and music by “The Switch”. There were raffle prizes galore, a handmade breast cancer quilt, 50/50 and silent auction. A beer garden was set up and “Miss Pinkie” was parked in a spot of honor where she remained throughout the afternoon.

42

Very special thanks go out to everyone who worked so hard to plan and put this event on, to all our sponsors and donators and especially to you, our participants. Because of all your hard work and generosity we will be able to present a check to the Pretty in Pink Foundation for over $22,000! In the past seven years we’ve raised over $100,000 for breast cancer. Look for us April 27, 2014 for the 8th annual Raleigh Pink Ribbon Ride. In the meanwhile we’ll be planning next year’s ride and will continue to do everything we can to help breast cancer victims survive this horrible deadly disease with the quality care and dignity they deserve regardless of their ability to pay.

the Traveling vietnam veterans memorial & Museum

footnote: 44

On Veterans Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund unveiled a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. Since its dedication, The Wall That Heals has visited more than 350 cities and towns throughout the nation, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions. Bringing The Wall home to communities throughout our country allows the souls enshrined on the Memorial to exist once more among family and friends in the peace and comfort of familiar surroundings. The traveling exhibit, known as The Wall That Heals, allows the many thousands of veterans who have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing The Wall to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.

eals escort ride The sun is smiling down with a few dark clouds around. The sun smiles for joy of bravery, brotherhood and freedom, the dark clouds sad for the loss of precious life and dignity. The bridge over Highway 70 and both sides of the street were lined with flags, veterans and supporters as the Wall That Heals was escorted by bikers proud of the USA and our service men and women who have fought and are now fighting for our freedom. Several R/C, M/C and M/M escorted the Wall That Heals with pride and honor, from South Boston, VA to Goldsboro, NC. There were over 4 miles of motorcycles, along with police and a helicopter escorting the wall. A huge flag waving in the breeze was held over Wayne Memorial Drive by the Goldsboro and Dudley Fire Department ladder trucks for the Wall That Heals and escorts to drive under. Also, along Wayne Memorial Drive there were hundreds of people with flags, veterans, and supporters. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Wayne County Veterans and Patriot Coalition walked among the crowds giving to the people flags and red paper poppies. Flag cards were given to vets with thanks for their service to our great country. This was an awesome event to give honor to our military.

The Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Museum was the idea of veteran Bill Graham to honor those who seemed to be forgotten. He is a jovial man with a smile but you can see the memory of sadness in his eyes. One of the organizers, Mr. Kirk Keller, said that this was his chance to honor those who served, died and did not return, involving as many young people as possible to know what freedom means to us all. He had an essay and poster contest for young people and the winners in each event had their entry put in 25 year and 50 year time capsules to be opened later in time. Many Public High School students waved 145 flags as the wall passed them on the street. Then the 145 flags that were waived were placed in field memorial layout in a grassy area at Wayne Community College for remembrance of the Wayne County and 6 surrounding counties of men who gave their lives while fighting. JROTC performed the Honor Guard Flag Presentation at the opening ceremony. The Wall That Heals was in Goldsboro, NC April 16th through the 22nd with many ceremonies and times of remembrance for those who gave their lives. Many tears were shed and many hearts were touched. Many bikers came to show honor and respect for people they loved and remembered. Biker Salute and Thank-you service men and women for all you have done, are doing, and will do for our country, One Nation under God!

RUFF RYDERS BIKE BLESSING What a Fantastic Ruff Ryder day March the 9th was!!!!! Blue skies, not too chilly, just a small breeze and a road to ride! In Wilson, North Carolina, the Ruff Ryders Bike Blessing was held. There were over 300 bikes there! They started out the Rally with a Blessing for the Bikes, by the Goldsboro Chapter of Ruff Ryders, for God to watch out for and protect them on the road. The best grilled chicken (with some sauce that was finger lickin’ good) was served, fine music was played by a professional DJ, and then a video was shot of The Harlem Shake. Everyone had a chance to dance the Biker Shuffle and watch the burnouts done for the video . They even did a smiley face burn out, what great skills were shown! Respect, honor, and love were shown to all who attended. Many Riding Clubs, and Motorcycle Clubs attended, some from Raleigh, Wilson, Goldsboro, Fayetteville, and then some tags were seen from Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, they just came from all over to be a part of this special bike blessing day.

love thy brother event On March 16, 2013, The Guardians of the Cross held the “Love Thy Brother Event” In Memory of Danny “Preacher Man” James at Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson. My family and I owe so much gratitude and thanks to everyone who supported this event. There were so many that were involved that I cannot name you all, but just know it meant more to me than words can ever express. The morning started out with rain and a dreary day looking ahead but many prayers where sent up and God brought out the sun and we had a beautiful day to remember a man who all of you loved. Please know that he loved you all! There were many things going on that day. We had a great band, “Shield of Salvation” playing throughout the day. Doobie, from Behind Barz Magazine, helped to sponsor the event and had a spinning wheel giving away gifts. We had cornhole toss, pictures being taken, door prizes, face painting by Charlie Hoggrell, food, car show, bike show and many give aways. We also had a 50/50 drawing, won by Debbie Mitchell, and she gave the money back. What an awesome thing she did! Her husband won the 870 pump shot gun. Willie James II won the flat screen TV and the $100 gas card (My birthday was the 18th, so Willie and my daughter gave me the flat screen TV). We had a bike show: American 1st place, David Price, 2nd place, Carpenter, Metric 1st place, 2nd place Gus McMillian, and 3rd place, Aaron Newman. The Sport Bike 1st place went to Monte Kennedy. For the first time, we held a car and truck show. The truck, van, SUV 1st place went to Fausto Morales, 2nd place Steven Laruer, 3rd place Blake Allen, the mini truck 1st place Johnny Parrish, 2nd place Charles Burton, 3rd place Pete Outlaw, Under construction 1st place Jeremy Barnes, 2nd place Ashley Hogue, 3rd place Paul Schroeder, Car 1st place Joey White, 2nd place Evan Johnson, 3rd place Squirt. Last but not least... the Best of Show was picked by me, Lynn James, and the winner was the Skeeter Earl truck. There was a memorial ride of about 50 bikers who rode a nice country ride out to the grave site of Danny. At the grave yard there were many inspirational words said about my husband and I thank you all for that. There was a couple that my daughter spoke of to me. They did not know Danny but they told Christie just by being at the event and hearing the stories and memories told about him that they wished they had known him because it sounded as if he was a great man of God with many family and friends who loved and missed him. The money raised that day after expenses was $4500.00; it will be enough to finish paying off his burial and to purchase him and I a headstone. Next year when they have his memorial event I hope you will all come to join us so you can see where the money went to as for the headstone. During the day of the event we were not only able to remember Danny but we had the chance to spread the word of God with many people and that is what my husband always wanted to do, share the word of God with everyone he met. I would like to say a special thank you at this time to Francis Cooley. She made me a handmade quilt out of Danny James’ t-shirts! It is something that will always be very special to my heart and an heirloom for my children. She also made one for the event that was in our silent auction with many other things. I do not have the words to express what the day meant to me and for all the support I have received from family and friends and my church family of Stairway to Heaven Biker and Community Church where my husband was the founding Pastor. For those of you who do not know, he was also the founder of the Guardians of the Cross Bikers Ministry. My husband was all about doing God’s work, so my challenge to the Guardians and Stairway is to continue to do God’s work! So, THANK YOU AND WE LOVE YOU ALL, from my children, Christie and Willie and grandchildren Dylan, Destiny, Krysia and Hunter Ayscue and myself! RIP My Love AAFA27DUE!
