Editorz Notez Love this time of year! Spring is very beautiful in the Carolinas and in Virginia! Dogwoods are in bloom, Azalia’s are at their peak! Pine trees are blowing their green liitle boogers all over the place and the snakes are out! Watch out for those critters! True, most are harmless and they even serve a purpose but I ran over one of those big black racers while I was doing about 60 miles per hour down the highway. I did not wreck but it was still scary, indeed. Also, be on the look-out for another Carolina Critter - the White-Tailed Deer. There are approx. 1.25 million deer in North Carolina alone. Fawns are born in May and June and believe me, they will run out in front of you. Coming home one evening about dusk back 20 years ago a Doe was standing near the road. I slowed to about 45 or 50 miles per hour and she darted across. I missed her. BUT her little Fawn ran after its mom and hit my rear tire/swing arm area. Again, I didn’t wreck but it was very close. That baby deer laid in the ditch for some time but was able to get up on its own and run off after its moma. Turtles are another critter to watch out for this time of year. They are always crossing the road to get to the other side! So, you not only have to watch out for cagers on cell phones but Carolina critters getting in your path, as well! Be safe out there! On the cover of this issue is the Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Spring Bike Week Cruisin’ The Coast Bike Rally. Mark your calenders for this event. Behind Barz will be hangin’ out at Myrtle Beach HD for the Rally and we’ll be all over at different venues for the entire week! Check out Myrtle Beach HD’s event info on page 7 and on page 55 in this issue. Plus, their Rally events are listed in our EVENTZ section of the mag! 2017 marks our 13th year publishing Behind Barz!

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send pack- Samples of cards that have been sent ages that are large enough for several to our troops! Use your imagination and members of a troop to share. Chap- send some cards from home! lains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. We need the name, address, approximate number of troops who will be served by this point of contact, and the approximate date of stopmail (we will send repeat packages). We also would like to know if there are females at that location who would like to receive girlie girl packages. We follow security guidelines and never distribute names and addresses to the public. Our donors and volunteers enjoy hearing back from our troops so notes and photos are very welcome!
Nothing says love better then the taste of home! Girl Scout cookies and Oreos!! Yum, Yum!
More ideas: Please order some supplies for our goody bags. Organize a donation drive, card making/letter writing drive, create a fundraiser for our care packages. Volunteer at our center. We welcome you to join us, even if it is just once or twice a month. All help is appreciated. Troops are welcome to receive care packages. Message us for information.
More happy troops! Very excited about their care package from NCPacks4Patriots! Thanks to everyone for helping make this happen throughout the year!
Thank you all of our donors who support our mission with financial donations. March was a very busy month! We mailed 106 packages for a total postage cost of $1986.42. Please keep the support coming in so we can continue our mission! Our team of volunteers works diligently to ensure our resources are wisely utilized in creating the best care packages! Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. We serve all branches of our military who are deployed. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? ~ Barbara

Trip planning guide
Now that the riding season is fully apon us it would be a good idea to familiarize ourselves with some helpful sites for a safe, happy and (hopefully) uneventful riding season. Before you leave, make sure you check the motorcycle laws in every state you’ll be going through. Check the weather in your planned trip locations. Book ahead at hotels and campgrounds. Include pertinent phone numbers in your cell in case of emergencies. Let loved ones or friends know where you will be going, where you are staying and how long you will be gone. Check in with friends and loved ones while on your trip. website listings courtesy of AMA

A Few More Ideas: Invest in a portable weather radio
Things to pack Light weight synthetic clothing (easier to wash, takes less space) Extra bungees and zip-ties Small towel for wiping off seats, windshields and mirrors Earplugs to help reduce wind noise Spare key A cell phone Cold weather and waterproof riding gear (no matter the time of year) Tool kit (multi tool takes up less space) First Aid kit Motorcycle cover Second pair of gloves A physical map. (cell service is never a guarantee) Fix-A-Flat Extra cash Extra battery pack for phone, blue tooth, etc. Flashlight Plastic ziplock bags Flip flops or sandals (when you get to where you are going you don’t want to have to walk in your boots!)
How not to pack your bike
Very colorful and pretty. Attracts the attention of passersby because you are more visible and makes them more aware but not too practical.
Some can be found in the $20 range, and the first time one saves you from running right into a massive storm, you’ll wonder why you ever traveled without one. Find one at accessory companies like, Aerostich. Make sure it is NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts alerts for national emergencies, tornadoes, thunderstorms, flash floods, mud slides, hurricanes, chemical spills, fires, and other emergencies. Warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information is broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Keep stuff dry You can purchase waterproof bags that are made for traveling, hiking or boating. You can also keep your stuff dry in saddlebags by using trash compactor bags as waterproof barriers. They’re thicker and more durable than standard garbage bags. When taking long or short trips, it is not a matter of if you are going to run into wet weather but when!
Height versus width will get you down the road in your lane ok but under bridges not so much! Water tight bags protect your things but a little over kill. Makes a great back rest, though!
A little more aerodynamic but more is not always a good thing. When you take off you are sure to do a wheelie with this one.

On The Move
The Motor Maids are on the move. We gathered from all over SC to go to Flo’s Restaurant in Murrell’s Inlet. The ride was put on by Elsie and she named it Fools to Flo’s since it was on April Fools’ Day! We had perfect weather for riding. The skies were blue without a cloud, the wind was mild and the sun was not too hot. While riding, the air had that Spring chill which keeps a rider wanting to go just one more mile.
We had a good time with our friends, family and sisters from another mother. The food at Flo’s was outstanding as usual; we ate Louisiana style foods, lots of seafood and ended the meal with their signature homemade beignets! We were all full as ticks. Also, the service was out of this world! We had our own space on the porch, so we were able to enjoy each other’s company and move around the tables without disturbing other patrons.
Motor Maids will go to extraordinary lengths to get a ride in and extra miles! Jenny and her husband Max, who live in Myrtle Beach, took the long way there by going to Florence to meet up with other Motor Maids, just to put on a few more miles. Then there is Linda who’s bike was not available, she rented a bike to make the ride possible for herself. And Krissa got up at dusk to ride around both Carolinas to end up at Flo’s for lunch. And our direct miles long distance winner, Celeste, came from Greenville with her lovely daughter Faith, obviously a future Motor Maid, on the back, leaving the house early to get there on time for lunch. Any excuse to ride, right Motor Maids!! It’s not the destination that counts, it’s getting there.
Some headed out to go home, the long way, of course. While others detoured to a local vendor, Jamin’ Leather, for some great deals. We pulled a couple of u-turns on the way there since our pack got separated, but we all ended up in the right place. We tried on leather jackets, pants, gloves, boots and hats. Filling our saddlebags with new goodies, we headed home after a lovely day of riding and friendship.

"Best of the Best" These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! Dos Hermanos Mexican Restaurant Nashville, NC Danny, his daughter Leah, and I had lunch at Dos Hermanos one afternoon and we enjoyed the food. Our servers, Mary and Rosie kept our chips & salsa bowls full, and our drinks topped off throughout our meal. I had the #2 lunch special, beef burrito, taco & beans, Danny had the #1 lunch special, chile relleno & beans, and Miss Leah ate a taco. Everything was served hot and pleasing to our taste. For dessert Leah & I shared an order of churros which were cinnamony good & sweet. Dos Hermanos is a biker friendly establishment and they support local! Stop by and give them a try. You will be glad you did.
Lou Reda’s ‘An American Table’ Rocky Mount, NC In our never ending quest to search out great places to eat and delicious foods, my friend Danny and I had lunch at Lou Reda’s in Rocky Mount on a Saturday afternoon. Our server, Christy, was efficient, friendly, and attentive the whole time she took our requests, refilled our glasses, and brought us our food. Thanks Christy. I had the Brie Burger, cooked to order, and it was melt-in-my-mouth good. Much to my delight it came with a basket of fries, no kidding, a little metal fryer basket, full of fries! How cool is that? Danny ate a House Salad which looked good, and during our meal, Mr. Lou Reda stopped at our table to insure that we were happy. We most certainly were, Lou. Lou Reda’s ‘An American Table’ is open for lunch & dinner, serves American comfort food with a modern twist, and is certainly worth a visit. Blue Star Bud & Danny

Some of our favorite eateries! Ramo’s Pizza & Grill Rocky Mount, NC We stop by Ramo’s quite a bit! My favorite dish there is the Bruschetta. I can honestly say that it is probably the best I have had anywhere! On this particular day we did order Bruschetta and we each had a sub. They pile the meat on, everything is fresh and they know just how to perfectly toast the sub roll before creating the sub masterpiece! We really like the fact that Ramo’s uses Boar’s Head products. They even sell Boar’s Head meats and cheeses by the pound! We love the Genoa Salami and always buy some to take home with us. They have beer on tap, domestic beer, imported and IPA beer, and wine by the glass and bottle. They also have homemade desserts you can buy by the slice or a complete cake! Ramo’s even delivers and we highly recommend you stopping by to eat, for a cold one...or both!!! Doobie & Vinney
your Health Behind Barz Lime Disease Lyme disease, is also known as Lyme borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Borrelia type. The most common sign of infection in 70 to 80% of people is an expanding area of redness, a bull’s eye type of rash, that begins at the site of a tick bite about a week after it has occurred. The rash is typically neither itchy nor painful. Some people do not even develop a rash. Other early symptoms may include fever, headache and feeling tired. If untreated, symptoms may include loss of the ability to move one or both sides of the face, joint pains, severe headaches with neck stiffness, or heart palpitations, among others. Months to even years later, repeated episodes of joint pain and swelling may occur. Sometimes even with appropriate treatment, about 10 to 20% of people develop joint pains, memory problems, and feel tired for at least six months. Affected individuals can also experience flu-like symptoms, such as headache, muscle soreness, fever, and malaise. After several months, untreated or inadequately treated patients may go on to develop severe and chronic symptoms that affect many parts of the body, including the brain, nerves, eyes, joints, and heart. Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. Usually, the tick must be attached for 36 to 48 hours before the bacteria can spread. The d isease does not appear to be contagious among humans. Diagnosis is based upon a combination of symptoms, history of tick exposure, and possibly testing for specific antibodies in the blood. Prevention includes efforts to prevent tick bites such as by wearing long pants, long sleeved shirts, and using DEET. Ticks can be removed using tweezers. If an infection or rash develops a doctor should be contacted.

MOM’S PRAYERS By: Bob “Bikerwolf” Bryant His Mom shed a tear When he bought his first bike A decision he’d made That she did not like She bowed her head And asked God above “Please Ride with him Lord’ For my son I do Love”. Seemed the harder she prayed The less he seemed to care Started running hard, getting tattoos And growing out his hair Sleepless nights he gave her While he raced with the wind But Mom’s faith never faltered As she Prayed again and again Mom would grab her bible Bow her troubled head Say watch over my son Lord So he don’t wind up dead While he ran wild And with demons would race He never knew what was saving him Was Mom’s Prayers and God’s Grace All Rights Reserved

BARZ
tank full of time CHAPTER THIRTEEN
XIII
GIZMO After meeting Burt Monro, and leaving Craig Breedlove in our dust, Zeke and I returned to our present time and felt the need for some relaxation. We called Sue and asked her how she felt about spending a weekend at The Flanagan House Bed & Breakfast in Murfreesboro, NC. She replied that she was all up for that so I called and made reservations for three rooms for the upcoming weekend. After arriving we got settled into our rooms and then went out for dinner and discussion. Sue told Zeke and me about her adventure with the Motor Maids and how she was able to bring Dot, Linda and Helen forward in time, to the present. We were amazed by that news and decided that it was time to visit the Wizard again. Before seeing her though, we’d need to check in with the Oracle and eventually go back into the future and give Brain a report of our travels. Sue was sad that she missed meeting Burt Monro, but I assured her that we could always go visit him another day. The down time did us good, and we motored around the area like any other three normal tourists. Sue… now ‘Super Sue’…called the Oracle setting a time for us to visit with him and asking to arrange a meeting between us and the Wizard. When we finished with our little R&R, we met up with the Oracle & filled him in on all our travels and adventures. He gave us another envelope to deliver to our ally ‘Brain’ the next time we saw him. ‘Brain’ / Brian lives about 100 years in the future and has become a good friend of ours. When we left the Oracle we visited our technician the Wizard so she could download data from the time travel devices attached to our bikes and the ones we wore on our wrists. She seemed satisfied that everything was in working order then let us go about our way. Then we dropped our scooters off at The Biker Barn in Spring Hope for routine servicing and wrapped up the day with a fine dinner at Chico’s Mexican restaurant in Rocky Mount. Try the fried ice cream dessert. Trust me on this one.
20
The next morning, feeling refreshed and with our bikes in perfect working order, we moved forward in time to fill ‘Brain’ in on our adventures. Little did we know that we were about to meet an interesting new character in our travels, thanks to the Oracle, of course. Because of the constant tweaking on our time travel devices, each time trip after a visit with the Wizard was easier than the one before. We traveled forward to 2117 easily, and found Brain at the parts counter in Hometown H-D. As always, he was delighted to see us. We gave him the letter from the Oracle. He read it, then looked at us and said, “I have someone for you to meet. I wanted to make sure the Oracle agreed with me that this wouldn’t cause any side effects in time, and while we can’t be 100% certain, we’re fairly certain this meeting will be okay.”

through, that any thirteen-year-old kid was going to raise my eyebrows. Wouldn’t you think I’d get tired of being wrong all the time? We followed Brain to a large inconspicuous white building that had all the charm of an abandoned tobacco warehouse albeit with a fence circling it and security cameras. As Brain approached the only gate in the fence, a buzzer sounded from somewhere and the gate slid open. No sooner had we cleared the gate than it closed behind us accompanied by the eerie hum of high-voltage electricity surging through its links. As we got to the white building, a hidden door in the wall appeared and we drove into the darkness. The door closed, so we shut down our bikes and sat still for a while, waiting for our eyes to adjust to the gloom. Finally some overhead lights slowly powered up saving us from eye aches and we could see a woman in a white lab coat holding a clip board. “Hi Brain,” she said, “now, if you’ll all follow me.” The CIA is all business, no hugs, handshakes, introductions or formalities, just a lot of ‘Let’s get to it.’ Okay by me. “Hey, Brain” I said “What are we supposed to call this kid?” “Well,” he replied, “Her first name is Keikilani, that’s Hawaiian for Child of Heaven, and she’s actually descended from Hawaiian royalty, but her full name is Keikilani Takara-Dawn. She picked out her own Company code name…Mozingo, but around here we all just call her Gizmo, because of all the cool gizmos she’s invented.”
“Who do you want us to meet, Brain? Are you going to keep us in the dark with all that ‘need to know’ stuff the Oracle feeds us?” “Not at all,” he replied, “It’s just a tad…complicated, this time. We’re talking about a most unique individual, that’s all.” “Yeah,” Sue said, “Like we haven’t seen our fair share of ‘unique individuals’ already!” “Really, Brain,” I added, “just how unique can somebody be after we’ve been to the underworld, met all sorts of demons, and the prince of darkness?” “Wait ‘till you’ve met this young lady before you decide who is the most interesting person you’ve ever encountered,” Brain asked of Sue. “Now follow me. We’re going to the Company ‘Think Tank’ where the big-brains work their magic.” “A young lady?” I questioned Brain. “We’re supposed to be impressed by a young lady? How young is this lady”? “Thirteen” was his answer. I seriously doubted after all we’d been
“Leave it to the CIA to call a kid with a beautiful name like Keikilani, Gizmo!” Sue snorted. Personally, I thought Gizmo sounded pretty cool. As we rounded a corner I nearly ran into some guy, and as I stepped back and said “Sorry about that dude!” I found myself standing face-to-face with none other than the Oracle. What the heck? By my reckoning the Oracle should have long ago passed on to his great reward, yet here he was, standing right in front of me and grinning like a monkey.

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter THIRTEEN continued... Once again, I was completely baffled and amazed at what I was seeing, so I reflexively stuck out my right hand and said, “Good to see you again, sir.” The Oracle extended his right arm and we shook hands. And...here’s where things got weird…again. I could see the Oracle, I could see that I was shaking a grown man’s hand, but it didn’t feel like a man’s hand, it felt too small, and too soft. “Uhh…how ya’ been?” I asked. At first he just sort of stood there smiling at me, but then he began to giggle. Grown men don’t giggle, and worse, this was a girl’s giggle, which is okay if you’re a girl, but completely wrong for an Oracle. My head was starting to hurt again. I really don’t like being confused! Oh yeah…there’s more. Then the Oracle started to morph into Dot Robinson, followed by Jim Morrison from the Doors, and then he became O.J. Simpson (that gave me the willies) but then I was shaking hands with Taylor Swift in a bikini, and that wasn’t so bad, until I found myself holding hands with Bigfoot! Yowza…I was living in an old Michael Jackson video!

Finally, I was simply standing there shaking hands with nothing but thin air. I could still feel the hand, could still hear the giggle, but there was no one in front of me. “Enough!” I exclaimed “what in the wide, wide world of sports is a’goin’ on here?” So….that’s how we met Gizmo. Gradually, she appeared as she really was, just a normal, cute 13-year-old girl with mocha-colored skin, black plastic glasses, and a mischievous smile.

The Easy Ride
We often read abou t the long trips some bikerz make all around the USA, or the famous destinations they’ve been to, like the Sturgis, Daytona Beach or Myrtle Beach rallies. Many of have ridden the legendary ‘Tail of the Dragon’, or at least have it on our own bucket lists. But what about an easy ride, the short jaunt that leaves from home and ends at home? Most often these rides involve back roads through small towns, or no towns at all, perhaps with a stop for lunch along the way or a ‘photo-op’ of some interesting scenery.
My neighbor & good friend Becky and I each have a friend who is new to the excitement of motorcycle riding, and neither is anxious for extended trips or t he thrill of super cruising I-95 (the perfect killer) or the ‘close-quarter combat’ style of any of the major roads around Raleigh. So when we ride, we pretty much ride local, enjoy the cruise, and don’t stay gone for more than a couple of hours. I guess you could call Becky & I ‘mentors’ by the way we try to set a good riding example for our friends. We stop & put our feet down at stop signs, use our turn signals & do the speed limit or less especially when taking the S curves. Sure we enjoy doing 5 over & laying our bikes over with wild abandon in the S curves, but the idea is to NOT scare our inexperienced friends into thinking that the whole motorcycle idea was an expensive mistake. We’ve taken Highway 301 from Kenly to Selma, passing through Micro on the way, and East Langley Rd. through Town Creek & Temperance Hall just to have lunch in Stantsonburg. Pretty soon the sweet aroma of honeysuckle will permeate the country air, and the cool spots where we cross over streams in the shadows will feel refreshing.
26
Seeing the excitement on our friend’s faces as they become better riders and more sure of their abilities is its own reward. Someday these friends will be sharing their biker skills with other new riders, and they’ll remember the ones who took them on the Easy Ride when they were new. I hope to take the motorcycle safety course with our friends and then the Bike Safe NC course with a local Police Department. Be safe out there and live the Behind Barz Life.

mind of big ed Then right in the center of my lane...a chicken! I would like to say I tried to stop... I would like to say it ran away... But nope... It was pecker to highway peg...WHAMMM!!!! Then a tad bit of depression started sinking in ‘cause I like chickens.

Hello You Happy Riders!!! Bikers have the best feeling of freedom that I believe you can get! ...but their freedom comes with a cost. Sometimes that cost can be your hide, or your life. Most times it’s because of stupid people. They dont look twice and then they whip right out in front of ya! But do you know what else? Do yall know how to pinch off a bit of leather between your butt cheeks? I tell ya, go down a back country road on your two wheels and let some yappy l ittle ankle biter zip out of its front yard toward your path, or let some sneaky tail cat dart across the road in front of ya. Oh yeah... This will cause you to work the brown eyed blinker for sure.
That chicken could have been so much more with its life! Like... Chicken pastery. Roast chicken. Grilled chicken. Chicken and noodles. Sweet and sour chicken. Or, at least a chicken sammich with a pickle. But not anymore. Now its roadside chicken. What’s bad was that it just turned its head towards my on coming motorcycle when I hit it. So...it saw the light. Twice I guess you could say. So yeah. Being a biker has its pros and cons. Sure, the wind in your face and the sound of your pipes roaring down the road is sweet, but we got to be c areful and always on the look out for things that’s not looking out for us. Whether it being dumb animals or stupid people. Y’all be save out there and I will catch you...Behind Barz.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
But you see, you know you are in he south when you hit a chicken! Yes y’all, I’ve done it! I was on the way to work. I was going down Pauls Path, doing just a tad over the speed limit. I was singing along to some Guns and Roses and whatever else I had buzzing around in my ear budz.

bike safe nc Wilson, NC My neighbor, Becky Folk, decided to take the Bike Safe North Carolina course, sponsored right here in Wilson, by the Wilson, PD. The course lasted from 9AM to about 4PM, involved 2 classroom sessions, 2 rides, one in town, one out in the county, was completely free, and involved no tests. On this particular Good Friday, there were only 3 riders taking the course, and 5 motor officers. Sgt. Benny Boykin, Cpl. Justin Cox and Cpl. Kenneth Robinson were the instructors / assessors from the WPD, plus one motor officer from the Greenville PD and one from the New Bern PD. The course is for every skill level of rider, but it’s not a ‘learn-how-to-ride’ course at all. During the classroom sessions videos are shown and discussed involving ‘what-went-wrong’ scenarios and then ‘what-would-haveprevented-that’ suggestions. Two of the main points made to the class are slow down and pay attention. Let me stress that the motor officers are not there to criticize, they are there to observe and assess the students riding styles and habits. Helpful suggestions are made by the motor officers during the 2 rides. After the first classroom session, Sgt. Boykin took the lead officer position with Becky following him as the lead student. USMC Sgt. Nick Davis rode his Ninja all the way from Camp Lejeune to attend this course and was thanked repeatedly by everyone for his service to our country. In case you ever get to see this story Nick...Semper Fi !

While the WPD motor officers assured me that many lady bikerz take this course, I have to tell you that all five of our instructors were quite impressed with the way Becky handled her H-D Road Queen during our rides. Sure, they were riding full-grown Beemers and the officer from New Bern had a gorgeous black Harley, but Becky’s bike ‘Brad’ was the star of the show on this day. If you want to have a great day of riding, some real fun, and maybe even learn a few things, look up the Bike Safe North Carolina page on Google or Facebook. Put aside your preconceived notions that the Police don’t like bikerz, and give this course a try in a town near you. Drag a friend along and you’ll both be surprised at the great time you’ll have riding with the 5-O !

Bill Lyerly performed at Nash Arts on 30 March 2017 and it was a very special performance! Bill and friends did an acoustics show. One of the few ever seen live and it was a great performance! Joining Bill for the evening was Clyde Mattocks, (one of the original founding fathers of the Super Grit Cowboy Band along with Bill Lyerly). Alan Hicks rounded out the trio for the evening. They played some old time gospel tunes, some tear jerking country tunes and a few familiar Country/Rock tunes. We really enjoed the evening! Dennis Winstead, a local fella sitting in the audience, joined them on stage and played the banjo. Man, can he play!

Hometown Harley-Davidson Spring Open House
story & photos: Doobie
On Saturday, 15 April 17, Hometown Harley-Davidson in Winterville, N.C., held their annual Spring Open House. Rain wasn’t supposed to come in until later in the evening and most likely not for this area of the state, but guess what? It did rain. I talked to Keith Trimble who road in from the Garner area and he said they rode in the rain almost the entire way to Hometown! Some other folks that came in from Halifax County said they had run into some as did some riders from Wayne and Duplin Counties. Even so, it was a great day and the rain never really developed in Winterville. It was an overcast day and that made it nice and comfortable.
Hometown gave out some great prizes ~ helmets, free service & oil change, bike detailing and even Wood Duck tickets! They had 60% off end of season clearance in MotorClothes, too! Stop by and check out all their inventory. They have many bikes to choose from, new t-shirt designs, plus, they have some killer motorcycle trailers in the showroom (pictured above)! Christopher Riley and the guys and gals at Hometown HD really know how to treat their customers. Visit them for your new Harley motorcycle, new Harley motorcycle parts, new Harley t-shirt or just to say, “Hey!”
There were a few vendors who were set up in the parking lot for the swap meet selling their used bike parts, motorcycle gear and even jewelry. HHD had demo rides during the event. WRNS radio station was doing a live broadcast and giving away items. Hometown HD provided everyone with hotdogs and cheeseburgers, chips, and bottled water. The Easter Bunny was milling around giving out candy to bikers and posing for photos. He even had an easter egg hunt! The Side Trac Band was there to perform.

Iron Butt Association Saddle-Sore 1000
H
ow many of you out there have taken on one of the Iron Butt Associations Challenges? You ask? “What is that?” The Iron Butt Association is an International organization with 60,000 plus members that are dedicated to long, safe distance motorcycle riding. In order to become a member, you need to complete and have certified one of the long distance rides that they have listed. There are many challenges to choose from, one being the Saddle-Sore 1000, which is a 1,000-mile trip that has to be made in less than 24 hours. On April 1st-2nd, the membership grew by 4 more members. At 5am on April 1st, Henry Graham, Glenn Plummer, David Hollingsworth and Phillip Brantly, left their homes and met at the Triangle Waffle House in Dunn, NC and began their 1,000 mile Challenge. Their Destination for their halfway mark and turn around point was Daytona Beach Harley Davidson in Fl. After 12 ½ hours and 511 miles later they made it to their turn around point. They had decided not to push it so hard going down there, but realized they would have to push harder to make it back in time to meet the challenge. The return trip was made in 9 ½ hours. Total mileage for trip was 1070 miles and exact time was 22 hours and 6 minutes. They only made 9 stops to refuel and take a 30 to 45-minute break before Pictured below L-R: Phillip Brantley, Henry Graham, David Hollingsworth, Glenn Plummer
returning to the road. I’m sure they now understand why it is called the Saddle-Sore challenge. The guys are already planning their next challenge, the Bunn Burner 1500. We would like to congratulate all of you for completing the challenge and wish you the best of luck on your next challenge. If you think you have what it takes to complete one of the many challenges the Iron Butt Association offers and would like more information, go to ironbutt.com for their complete rules, procedures, forms, fee schedules and a complete list of all their challenges they offer. Southern Sin MC
39th Annual Spring Party Rocky Mount, NC While out riding on a fine eastern NC afternoon, and on our way to Lou Reda's restaurant, Danny and I stopped into Black Cat Harley-Davidson in Rocky Mount. The many changes are all for the better and they had the latest issue of Behind Barz on the magazine rack. I hope they keep it that way. As Danny and I were walking around and looking at the used bikes out front, we met up with a former acquaintance, Justin Sexton and his friend, Big Head of the Southern Sin MC. Both are righteous dudes, and Big Head invited us to come out to the SSMC '39th Annual Spring Party' at their clubhouse located on the outskirts of Rocky Mount. So, after a great meal at Lou Reda’s we motored on out to the SSMC clubhouse where Big Head showed us around and introduced us to other SSMC members. Everyone was friendly and courteous to Danny and me. Southern Sin MC is a solid club, with a fantastic clubhouse and club grounds. Wolfman from the Tar River Chapter of the Bikers for Christ MM had a table and tent set up and kindly let me take some photos. As the SSMC members were cooking burgers, hot dogs and chicken on the grill for lunch, Big Head pointed out members of the Wingmen MC who were arriving, and explained that Southern Sin MC and the Wingmen MC had been friends for 38 years. We didn’t get to stay around for some tenderloin and oysters that they were having for dinner, but Big Head did invite us back for two other upcoming SSMC events. The June 24th SSMC anniversary party & the Sept. 23rd Dickie Wells Lost Brother Run. Everyone is welcome for both events. I’d like to thank all the SSMC members for being so kind to Danny & me, especially Big Head, Chapter President Phil Carter, V.P. Pistol Pete, Fisher & Biggie. Not only does this club have class, I got to check out their bikes, and obviously they take the same pride in their rides that they take in their club. All Harleys, clean, sharp and standing tall. Outstanding!

Ridin’ with Doctah Steve presen story: Bud Dunlap & Tim Prescott photos: Bud Dunlap
Fayetteville, NC On a perfect Sunday morning, 90 motorcycles, a multitude of bikerz, passengers, several cars and the Cumberland Co. Sheriff's Dept. with Sgt. Jennifer Michelle joined together to support an event to benefit local special needs athletes and other fine organizations. This amazing charity event, in its 6th year was known as; Ridin' with Doctah Steve presents: ZUMA ROUND TOWN 2017 Let me explain what you just read, then I'll share what Mr. Tim Prescott sent to me. 1. Steven Prescott is a handsome young man with autism. His 'road name' is DOCTAH STEVE. 2. Steve rides a cool black Zuma scooter. Once a year, in the spring Steven, along with Tim (Steven’s dad), Claudia (Steven’s mom) and Uncle Tom, and others organize the ride 'ZUMA 'ROUND TOWN' around the Fayetteville area, led by Steven & escorted by the Cumberland Co. Sheriff's Dept. Now you know. By Tim Prescott, Steve's Dad: "Steven "Doctah Steve" Prescott has autism. He has a VERY hard time communicating and socializing. A couple of the many things he ABSOLUTELY LOVES are riding his scooter and raising money for worthy causes. These two things give him purpose, pride and help him build relationships with people. For the past six years he sponsors and leads a Sheriff escorted ride in Fayetteville, NC. this is his way of giving back to a community has given him SO much! To date, he has raised just about $18,000 over 6 years which has ALL gone to worthy organizations! This year Steven has the unique opportunity to support the Harnett County Special Olympics as they (one of Steven's current coaches) stand up their first ever Equestrian Program and he has decided that 25% of what he raises will go toward this endeavor. Equestrian is probably the most money and labor intensive program in the Special Olympics, so every penny helps! 25% will still go to Cumberland County athletes and the remaining 50% will go to worthy Charities and Organizations selected by YOU!

ents: ZUMA ROUND TOWN 2017 In this, our 6th year we had 90 bikes on the ride and raised $4500. The camaraderie for Steven is the NUMBER ONE most important thing. He'll probably never have an actual license (the sensory overload makes it unsafe) and this ride gives him TONS of pride and joy. Although he doesn't communicate verbally with others, he LOVES being with other bikers and his friends. This year's 50/50 was won by Daryl Wilson, a Special Olympics Athlete, Coach, and National Ambassador. Doctah Steve's favorite bike in the ride was a classic Honda 750 Four. Steven rode as Honorary Ride Captain in honor of Buster Gilmore (one of our Athletes family's Father/Grandpa, and Vietnam Veteran / CVMA member, Robert 'Ghostrider' Milam.
Chewy “Iron Butt” Ewing and his driver “Dad” Butch Ewing.
This year's ride was 16 miles long and we averaged 25-30 MPH. We had exactly 90 bikes and about 10 cars. The escort was provided by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers. They are DEEPLY involved with our Athletes. Food trucks were ‘Pink Pig BBQ & Shrimp’, and ‘R Burger’. They both donated portions of their proceeds. Thanks Tim. I'd like to add a few things. This ride was supported by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, members of the Blue Knights International Motorcycle Club, Bikers for Autism and wonderful folks from The Patriot Guard Riders. I enjoyed seeing some of my longtime friends there including our CVMA State Representative, Jim 'Sheriff' Beck & his wonderful wife Lindsey, CVMA Chapter 15-6 Commander Ernie 'Big E' Byrd & his lovely wife Beth, OB1 Jammer, Dan & Carole Byer, Dookie, Bear, Mac, Al & Emily Seglund, Gonzo & my riding companions Becky & Daniel.
Bud Dunlap with Chewy “Iron Butt” Ewing.
For the first time I was honored to meet Steven 'Doctah Steve' Prescott, his Dad Tim & his Uncle Tom, all members of Bikers for Autism. Young Mr. Aiden Ketchum who let me photograph him with his Dad's cool green Harley, and the legendary Iron Butt Mutt, Chewy, Biker Dog who was there with his driver, Butch. Chewy even gave me his card & a pawtograph! Chewy was surrounded by the people he loved and the people who loved him. Lots of Veterans, Nurses, Police Officers, Bikerz, and of course the beautiful children got to pet Chewy & get their pictures taken with him. James Whitaker was there in his classic BMW with Hercules Boxer riding in the sidecar, and Tim Wall brought Snoopy Twall. Chewy, Hercules and Snoopy visited for a while much to everyone's delight.
This awesome event was for a great cause, and we had a perfect ride. We want to thank everyone involved in putting it together, and all those who showed up to support Doctah Steve.

Johnny Ray’s Signature Sauces
If you use Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram or even Pinterest then you should have seen the many posts we have made about Johnny Ray’s. We love all the Johnny Ray’s sauces and have tried them on just about everything! We have grilled chicken breasts with Johnny Ray’s sauces, baked chicken quarters, simmered crockpot pork chops, baked toaster oven shrimp, and grilled steaks with Johnny Ray’s lathered all over them! We have used JRSS on our french fries, on cheeseburgers, and on deli sandwiches. Even on a plain ol’ biscuit! Next test will be in homemade meatloaf, yum! Johnny Ray’s hasn’t failed us yet! We have loved it every way we have tried it!
If you haven’t already, give them a try. You’ll be glad ya did. In the mean time, check out their website: www.thesaucelife or look them up on Facebook for new recipes, sauces, events, news, and just to see all the ways they use Johnny ray’s Signature Sauces! Below is a personal recipe of Johnny Ray’s. He was kind enough to send it over to us. Give it a try or come up with your own recipes and let us or Johnny Ray’s know all about it!
Johnny Ray’s is a local product...Small batch, grilling & BBQ sauces. Handcrafted right here in North Carolina in a little town by the name of Mount Holly. Located just west of Charlotte in Gaston County. Don’t live in the western part of NC? ...Don’t fret! You don’t have to drive all the way to Gaston County! You can find Johnny Ray’s Signature Sauces at most Food Lion grocery stores, Lowe’s Foods stores and a variety of specialty stores throughout NC. Check their website for a store and city near you.
Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin Medallions ~ Cut fresh pork tenderloin into 1"- 1 1/2" cubes ~ Season well with your favorite spice Blend ~ Wrap a half strip of Bacon on each cube and put on a skewer. Cook on the grill, in the oven or in the smoker until internal temp reaches 165 degrees. Brush Johnny Ray's Signature Sauces onto the meat and allow the sauce to caramelize and get nice and sticky! Enjoy the tenderness, the salty and the delicious sauces as they create an amazing flavor explosion! Serve with seasonal veggies from the grill! Enjoy!

Cooler 2 See Review by Blue Star Bud The COOLER 2 SEE koozie is a high-tech product that by it's very name describes what it is. But let me tell you what I think of this nifty little item. I think it's the coolest thing I've seen in a very long time! My C2S koozie is the plain black model, although they come in a wide variety of wild colors & even several camouflage patterns. Their website cooler2see.com has lots of pictures and videos to help you pick out the perfect koozie. The many features on my C2S koozie are amazing. Because of the soft lip on top, it will accommodate a wide range of bottles or cans. I stuffed a 20 oz. bottle of Pepsi in mine just to see if it would fit, and it did. Not only that, but the 2 rare earth magnets on the back held my koozie with the bottle to the fork tin on the front of my bike, the steel back door in my kitchen and the refrigerator.

powerful LEDs
Of course the coolest thing about this koozie are the super bright 13 LED's in the middle of the soft, translucent base on the bottom. The push button switch on the front controls the 'mode' of the LED's from high, low & flashing 'distress mode'. I noticed that the flashing mode was not random flashing, but rather a Morse code signal, so I contacted Peter at customer service to inquire what the signal was saying. Peter emailed me back promptly to explain that the 'distress signal' was "BEER ME"! Honestly, he thinks of everything, including a drain hole in the bottom so condensation or spills can escape. The COOLER 2 SEE koozie comes with the 3 AAA batteries needed to run the light. Just to simulate a cold night outside, I left my C2S koozie in the fridge overnight, and the LED's worked perfectly when I turned them on in the morning. My unit even came with two COOLER 2 SEE stickers in bright green. How cool is that?

Over the past week I've had the opportunity to try out some unique boots, marketed by tectusboots.com out of Independence, Kentucky. These are footwear designed for the discrete carrying of concealed weaponry, and comfort. My boots are the 'Tactical' version made out of 1000 D Cordura nylon with a leather strap sewn on the outside of the left boot & a nylon holster sew on the outside of the right boot. The holster has Velcro straps to keep a small pistol secure, yet a straight pull upward easily released my S&W 2214 .22 pistol. The Tectus website has a list of firearms that the holster will accommodate.
I found out that the leather strap on the left boot will hold a thin folding knife like my SO G X-Ray Vision on the inside, next to my boot, or a small sheath knife like my Cold Steel 'Urban Skinner', now sold as the 'Safemaker' on the outside.
54
BBLIFE
My boots are lace-up in front, with a zipper on the side, and a Velcro strap above the zipper for extra security. My boots are a size 9, and had enough extra room inside for me to add a thin Dr. Scholl's style insert, making them even more comfortable. These boots favor the old black nylon jungle boots, but are much lighter. The aggressive tread pattern on the soles provides a good grip in 'off-road' conditions. I found these boots to be extremely comfortable weather standing, walking or riding my motorcycle.
Tectus boots in all leather sell for around $120.00 while the lighter weight Cordua nylon units like mine go for about $100.00, and they're well worth the money. My boots also came with a separate storage bag for each boot & a tote bag to carry them both in. The Tectus boots are made in China, and can be found easily online at: tectusboots.com or by calling Nathan @ 859-393-3538.
Monkey
If the thrill of track riding has started to fade, the whizz bang dashboard on your bike gives you a headache and you’re concerned about becoming a Sunday couch potato rather than living life to the full, then The Monkey Run is for you. If it can’t rekindle your love for bikes then it really is time to hang up your boots and buy yourself a new pair of novelty slippers. The Monkey Run took place for the first time this April and involved fourteen brave/ stupid guinea pigs being led blindfolded into the Sahara desert, twelve hours from
Marrakech, and told they had to get to a destination on the Atlantic Coast, 1000km away, six days later. The only slight glitch, they had to travel the 1000 unknown kilometres on a Monkey Bike. For those who aren’t familiar with the 49cc Monkey Bike, the organizers sum it up as follows… “If a gigantic all-terrain dual-sport bike is a way of announcing to the world that you’ve got a tiny willy, a Monkey Bike serves to remind folk that you’re hung like a donkey.” That’s to say that a Monkey Bike is very small, standing not much taller than knee height. It’s totally inappropriate for riding across a dessert and almost guaranteed to break down every few miles. For all their short comings however, the riders on the pioneer Monkey Run agreed they wouldn’t have wanted to ride it on any other bike. Not only were they able to fit through tiny gaps in traffic and there wasn’t far to fall when they came off, but the bikes were light enough to carry when they inevitably broke down and so mechanically basic that a roll of gaffer tape went a long way.
56
Most importantly though the bikes were a whole lot of fun. Being so low to the ground meant travelling at 20mph felt like racing at ten times that speed, and they were unwavering in their ability to bring a smile to the faces of all around, whether the riders themselves or those rolling around on the floor laughing as grown men went past on bikes fit for children.
It wasn’t just about the bikes however and, once au fait with their totally inadequate steeds, the riders had to deal with the fact there was no set route to their destination, the Atlas Mountains were in the way and getting lost and staying with strangers was encouraged.
behindb
business
It was this ‘being thrown in at the deep end’ that made the trip so memorable for most. As riders struggled with their bikes across the Sahara, looking like something out of Mad Max, they were blown away by the vastness and beauty of the desert landscape, nights were spent sleeping under the stars in the Atlas Mountains without even a tent for protection, sweeping roads were swapped for pot holed un mapped tracks and river crossings, bizarre wildlife encountered and a lot of new friends, especially local mechanics, made.
I expected fun on a motorcycle while getting lost and a lot of off-road. Did it match it? We made it match taking around 100km off-road pistes and paths every day. Was it good fun? Very. Dangerous? Sometimes while riding along the cliffs. Not Ngalawa-cup dangerous, but still risky depending on where you ride and how.
story & photos: David Ferguson
It didn’t take us long to get lost, around 15 minutes after the start line, since my team mate and me had no maps whatsoever. A cool chap called Jules appeared just in that moment and from there on, we three rode the hell out of those Chinese monkey bikes for the remaining 1370 km. The bikes were pretty good fun while riding flat out downhill some of road pistes. You could actually make them jump and they were much more competent in the dirt than I thought. I can assure that I abused my bike as much as I could. Including taking her 1-meter-deep into the sea water of the Taghazout beach. Twice. Even then it started (after taking all the water out obviously and pushing a lot). BUT not everybody had that luck. We had been in Morocco before, and people have always been very kind with us. The other riders were also all pure adventurers and very cool guys. All in all the Monkey Run was a very funny little adventure. If you do it well, you can find some pretty funny and good troubles.” – Alvaro Baleato Varela, Pioneer on the first Monkey Run. After the huge success of the Pioneer Edition of The Monkey Run, the organizers, The Adventurists, plan to run the event bi-annually in Morocco (already having sold out for the next Run) and are also exploring the possibility of running a third event ‘somewhere else in the world’!
