Many people have asked how they can send care packages or letters to deploying #Soldiers. A few years ago, the Department of Defense made the decision to stop using military assets to ship letters and care packages to deployed Soldiers. In keeping with this guidance, Fort Bragg cannot receive care packages and/or letters to forward on to our deployed forces. However, we are blessed to have two major organizations that can assist if you wish to support our troops, the USO of North Carolina and NCPacks4Patriots.
We
The USO has a long relationship with Fort Bragg. In 1941, Fayetteville was home to the first USO outside of Washington DC. The #USO of NC has a center in Fort Bragg’s Maj. Gen. William C. Lee Soldiers Support Center, where they provide a wide variety of services to more than 400 Service members daily. The USO of NC is accepting in-kind donations that can be given to service members as they leave for a deployment. Examples of needed donations include hygiene items such as deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, baby wipes, energy drinks, snacks, etc. Unfortunately, the USO does not have the capability to send letters and care packages to service members overseas. The point of contact is (910) 495-1438 or via email at: NCPacks4Patriotspcannon@uso-nc.org.is a volunteer non-profit organization based in the Eastern NC cross-roads town of Ayden. They have been supporting our deployed troops with care packages since 2005. Their packages contain hygiene items, snacks, recreational items and letters from grateful Americans. During this past holiday season they sent more than 900 packages to deployed forces. All items and postage for their operations come from Pointdonations.ofcontact for NCPacks4Patriots is Barbara Whitehead, (252) 714-1175, email: ncp4p@yahoo.com.

MAIDS
Motor Maids called it a day around 3:00 and headed home with full tummies, our bag of treasures and handmade jewelry, along with a greater appreciation for Virginia’s indigenous peoples.
On the morning of May 28, a group of eight Motor Maids met, and headed out to the 33rd Annual Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe Pow Wow. We love going for the dancing, drum-playing, and the jewelry booths. And of course, the beautifully dressed dancers. We’ve been trying to do this ride from two years, but the Pow Wow had been canceled, thanks to Covid. The Pow Wow opened with the Grand Entry of Dancers – a colorful parade circling their Tribal Grounds. Each member of the Tribe participated wearing their native dress, demonstrat ing their Native American dances to the spectators. It was a beautiful day with hundreds in attendance. Follow ing the Grand Entry, all the veterans in attendance were invited to join the ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance.
The program continued all day with different groups of dancers and drummers; first the men, followed by the women and children. Their clothes were so bright, and some of the dresses had bells attached, which made a lovely sound as the women danced. It was easy to get caught up in the excitement of the dancing. A two-year-old girl from the sidelines slipped under the rope and started dancing with the groups.
Someone tried to get her, but she was too slick and danced away. What a fun thing to watch! If we weren’t watching the dancers and drummers, we were visiting all of the vendors, particularly the jewelry booths, looking for hand-made Thetreasuresfood was wonderful. They had the standard fare of hamburgers and hot dogs, but they also had tacos, fried fish, and best of all “fry bread.” While we ate lunch, we shared a table and conversation with a couple from the Pamunkey Tribe, j ust down the road. My buddy, Bev, and I toured their museum a couple of years ago. Visiting this part of Virginia would be a great ride. The Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe is located in King William County off Rt. 30. It’s easy to get to from U.S. 360 or Rt. 33, you’re not that far from some of the waterfront towns and villages along the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers, and the Chesapeake TheBay.

Well, the 82nd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is in the books and the sleepy little town in the Black Hills has returned to its normal state of being. Just a couple days ago the sound of tens of thousands of scooters could be heard everywhere within 50 miles but today there are only a few scooters that can be heard putting around the area. All of the barriers on Main Street have been removed and cars are once again allowed to travel and park on it. The vendor tents and the millions of overpriced rally items have been packed up and trucked away… It was a smaller rally again this year but it was still a huge event that drew hundreds of thousands of bikers from all over the world. I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of old friends from around the country and I made several new ones too. I didn’t get a chance to do much riding because I had a couple issues with Bullwinkle and I was busy with ministry nearly everyday but the riding I did get to do was a lot of fun and much needed. If you were to ride into Sturgis, Hill City, Keystone or any of the other little towns in the Black Hills today you would never believe that less than 3 days ago they were the site of one of the biggest biker parties in the world. Every bar and saloon in every little town was full of bikers living out their passion for riding and hanging with their brothers and sisters. The curbs on both sides of the street were lined with every kind of scooter imaginable. Some of the scooters are works of art created in the mind of its owner and expressed in steel and paint. Some of the other scooters parked at the curb make you wonder how they ever made it to rally but they did make it and that makes them as much of a piece of art as any scooter they’re parked next to, at least in my opinion it does.
Livin ' The BehindBarzLife .com
I’ve been to virtually every major scooter rally in the country and by far the Black Hills Rally is my favorite and I look forward to coming back every year. Any biker who has never been to this rally is missing out on the experience of a lifetime. There are things to do and see out here that you will never see anywhere else and much of them are things the whole family can enjoy. This rally has everything from museums to zip lines and helicopter rides around Mt. Rushmore and the Crazyhorse Monument. There are wineries and mountain arts to enjoy and a million other places and events like concerts and old west shootouts on the streets of Deadwood. If you have always wanted to experience The Black Hills Rally but it just never happened I encourage you to make a plan to get here and work towards that goal until you wake up one day and find yourself riding down Main Street with tens of thousands of your brothers and sisters… If you can dream it you can do it!

Story and photos: April Miller I started riding in April 2021 when my boyfriend introduced me to motorcycles. I started riding a 2000 R6 to see if I would like it. I quickly fell in love and bought a 2008 R6 in October 2021. Going from carburetor to fuel injected was a HUGE difference. A couple months after I started riding, I took my first fall. I was going around a corner at 30-40 mph and didn’t lean far enough. I slid safely with the bike to the ditch. I was okay and so was the bike. I jumped right back on and rode home. Ever since then, I’ve been practicing and getting better with each Ridingride.isan outlet for me. I have 3 children, work full time, and keep the household running. Riding, to me, clears my mind from the everyday struggles I have with mental health (anxiety and depression). I’m able to fully mute thoughts and focus on my ride. Riding has also opened a huge door to some AMAZING people. I’ve met so many people and learned so much. I thank my boyfriend (Mark) all the time for introducing me to this LIFESTYLE and teaching me the ropes.

My Story...
Livin' The
My story starts in May 2021. My boyfriend just bought a Harley and I needed a helmet to ride on the back with him. We go to a local dealership and I notice an Indian Scout sitting on the showroom floor. An Indian has always been my dream bike so, of course I go look...a 2019 with 92 miles on it. I sat on it and as cheesy as it sounds it was a found my soulmate moment. Everything fit me perfectly, but I walked away as I believed I could not get financed. I buy a helmet and on the way home my boyfriend talks me into applying for the bike, right before closing on a Saturday when they are closed Sunday and Monday. Fast forward to Tuesday, I am at the river with my daughter and dogs when the finance company calls and asks to set up a time to sign papers. Did I just impulse buy a motorcycle? I have ZERO idea how to ride! I’ve only ever been on the back. So, I sign the papers, and my boyfriend has to ride it home for me but I’m grinning ear to ear! Then the reality sets in, now I HAVE to learn how to ride and get my endorsement. Here in Washington you have to take 4 tests to be endorsed, a permit skills and written and an endorsement skills and written. My permit class I felt very frustrated and nervous, and while I passed the written I bombed the skills. I called my Storyboyfriendand photos: Chrissy Darrington,RiversWA. crying saying sell my bike I obviously can’t do this. He was so supportive and said no we will get this done. I reached out to a ladies group of mine and Donna Palladino was my angel. She helped me get some cones and talked me through how to practice (we live in different states). I spent a month practicing, and darn near aced my retake on my own bike. A couple weeks after that, I took the endorsement class and passed. I spent the summer racking up miles, experience, confidence and so many new friends! Fast forward exactly one year later, and I am now (June 2022) in the certification program to become an instructor for the same school I went to last year. I feel so blessed to give back what was given to me and to be a part of a new rider’s journey to love motorcycling as much as I do. I look forward to this new chapter and all the experience it will bring. I love this family I am now a part of, and I plan to ride until I physically can’t anymore. I hope my story can inspire others who may be struggling getting started to ride their own ride, no one says you have to master this in a weekend. The important part is to not give up, you are still a million miles ahead of those who never even try. Life

‘Tis The Season! I call it Christmas In July for bikers! It’s the time for all of us that are “Behind Barz” to get out and do what we enjoy most... RIDE! It’s the time to put our knees in the breeze and twist the throttle wide open. This is MOTORCYCLE SEASON. You’ll see us out there laid back with a song in our ears, a rumble between our legs, and a roar from our pipes as we go by. This is the time of year that we live for! Tattoo’d and tan, we head for the beaches or the mountains or wherever two wheels and a full tank of fuel will take us. Life is good! A friend of mine reminded me that this is the time of year that we must “ride like we are invisible”. In other words, as much as it’s our time of year to ride, the cars and trucks on the road are distracted and will always say, “I never even saw that motorcycle”. We’ve all heard it and I’ve heard it first hand myself so have fun but always be mindful of the other guy...especially those cagers turning left across your path of travel. They’re on their cell phones and not paying attention as we are trying to enjoy our ride! Keep your curves Jaybird “Snapshot”

IN THE USA tight and keep an eye out for that “green ice” on the right side of the road, too. Because not only is it riding season, it’s also grass cutting season, as well. Most folks that don’t ride, don’t even realize the safety hazzard they create by blowing their grass clippings into the roadway, especially with the afternoon rains! We always want to “keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up”! Like most of you reading this, I try to ride every day that I possibly can and like you, as much as I enjoy a summer ride, I see safety hazzards on the roadways every time I ride. And just a remind er, when the temperature reaches 90 degrees, the tar patches that fill the cracks in the road become liquid and slick. They’re not that much of an issue for us in the straightaways but it’s easy to lose control in the curves if you aren’t fully aware! The deer also seem to be more prevalent than they’ve ever been in the evenings and my head is constantly on swivel looking for the double dot reflections of their eyes as I cruise at night. Fun is fun but safety is number one...we all have to make it home to our families and loved ones! Be safe, have fun, and enjoy your life “Behind Barz”. In order for one to happen, the other has to happen, also. One can’t have one without the other. That’s the world we live in, a world that is constantly changing with some things, ...maybe revolving is the better word, “what goes around comes around”. Want something good to happen, do something good. Good is defined as, “that which is morally right, righteous, doing the right thing, approved of.
This World is defining what morally right is by who or what ever is being offended, seems like “whatever goes” now no matter how confusing it is to someone with common sense.

There are timeless true statements that just nothing can be done to change them. They are going to happen wether you like it or not. I guess they have to happen in order for Summer to begin or “we’re closed this weekend”, “and it’s time to set the clock back an hour”.
The Bible (“Bible“ means “The Book”!) Has the Words of Jesus spoken to a large crowd in the Gospel written by the Apostle Matthew marked by chapter 5 thru 8. Standards to live by to have life.
Receiving these life commands by faith in the One giving them who gives eternal life, ends “end of Summer” and working on the weekends and stopping time with no more nights, perfect weather, and Joy! Always!

What an awesome day! And a HOT day! This was the 2nd Annual Customer Appreciation Day and friends, old and new, gathered at Old School Bike Shop/Old School Detail LLC in Louisburg to celebrate, eat good food, listen to a great band, drink amazing beer, fellow ship and remember Gary Tant and the Biker Barn. It was like a family reunion! We counted approximately 250 people and 125 bikes in attendance. Zorry’s Tacos, Southern Q and the Bunn Lion’s Club was on hand providing great food for everyone. It was all so delicious! The Whiskey Forge band provided the live music and everyone helped raise $810 for Safe Space of Franklin County. There was also a Bike Show where 1st, 2nd, 3rd and People’s Choice trophies were given Thanksout. to Gregg Laymen and George Horton for having us all there and the great hospitality. It was a great event! Please see the flyer on the facing page for the next big event at Old School. There will be live music, food vendors and lots of fun! We hope to see you there!

From The Mind of Hello My Happy People!
The only thing that sucked was the frequent stops for gas about every 87 miles. BAHAHAHA! It became a joke. My brothers were always looking out for me. By the time I filled up at the pump, they wanted to know will I make it across the street for another fill up. Brotherly love y’all. BAHAHAHA! They say what they want. I was able to make it happen with that 1200. My prez definitely stretch that miles per gallon coming back from the mountains. I pulled up to him and told him I was ready for a fill up. I was at 72 miles and I have never took the bike past 82 miles before stopping for gas. I was getting a bit nervous when we were looking a gas station on a middle of nowhere highway. Mile 85 rolled over on the mileage on my speedometer. Now I’m starting to think, we are about to use that gas bottle in my saddle bag. I looked over at Nasty and he looked at me. We had that mutual understanding telepathically, that I was about to have to pull over to the side of the highway, and He “Nasty” was going to dump a bucket of Sportster jokes upon my person. This would only be a one sided entertainment situation, with me catching all the jokes. Brotherly love, no Welldoubt.luck did hit. At 86 miles we were able to whip into a gas station and at 87 miles on my speedometer I was able to dump some gas in the tank and wipe my forehead. Yes, I was a bit worried but not too worried. Gas bottles are a great investment especially with a 3.3 gallon tank...I definitely suggest in having one. Anyway lets talk about what I turned around and got. I took the funds from selling my sled and got on market place. Man let me tell you. I have checked out some motorcycles. I’ve seen Road kings, Fat boys, Low riders, Heritages, Street Glides, Road Glides, and even had friends from all over call me and tell me about the Bikes they were selling. I even had a fellow reader of this great magazine hit me up about his motorcycle.
( Hey Mike, your bike is bad ass bro! ) But after looking at all these bikes. My brother from the club hit me up. He was wanting to sell his Electra Glide. He was working a custom and he just didn’t ride the Electra Glide no more. To him, selling the bike would get him out of a motorcycle payment and to me it would put me on a biker bike. It was a win/win. He had already set the bike up the way I would want it. 16 inch apes and true dual exhaust. The bike is black and beautiful. My wife looked at me and I could tell she was digging it as much as I was. I pulled up to Gump’s house to do a test ride and after running up the road. I was already ready to drop the funds out of my bank account. My brother looked out for me, too. He had hooked me up with a new battery and even called me when I got home to be sure I liked what I got. I assured him quickly that I had no regrets and I was happy as a pig in shit! The bike rides like a cloud. Remember now, I’ve been riding a sporty for nearly 10 years. That sporty is quick on the throttle but you feel every bit of the road, bumps and all. So, to get on this cloud and cruise, bruh! This is night and day difference here folks. 34
Where to start? ...Well, I sold my ‘08 HD Nightster. The young man that bought it was tickled to death. It was his first Harley! His Dad Jamie, came out with him and test rode the bike. After a little putt putt around the block, his son Jackson took her for a little ride. I could tell as soon as Jackson pulled back up in my yard, it was a done deal. Jackson had a smile running from ear to ear. Jackson had been riding a Honda and he had just sold his ride. I’m not going to lie, I was a little attached to that bike. I’ve had that motorcycle for nearly 10 years. Countless rides and poker runs I have been on seem to run through my mind. The times I rode the bike back and forth from Dudley to Gastonia NC, to see my kids when they used to live there. Not to forget, a mountains trip with the club. When I bought that Nightster. It had less then 900 miles on it. When I sold it to Jackson, it had around 32k. I can not complain about it at all. That bike was zippy and fun to ride. I’m 255 lb. at the moment, but even at my heaviest at 303. The bike had no problem staying up with the pack.
“This is one of my most favorite bikes I have ever had the pleasure of owning” 35Facebook.com/BehindBarzMag
Alright, I’m going to stop. As you can tell I’m excited about my ride. I know there’s folks who probably had 12 of these bikes by my age, but I’ve never been able to swing it. My top priority has always been my children. So, Daddy getting new toys has been on the back burner. I have heard all the jokes, but its never bothered me because in my head my kids come first and they get everything I got. So, as long as that’s handled, I’ve never put too much stock in making sure I have the things I want. Family comes first and whatever extra we have goes to fixing the house or cars. That’s the life of a family man. I dig it. No doubt and our father in heaven has always looked out for me and my family. But this is one of my most favorite bikes I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Some say, it’s an old man’s bike. To me it’s a bad ass ride and they can get on these old man nuts! I love this bike! So, if you see me between Goldsboro and Clayton during the work week, give me a wave and if you see me in the wind smiling, catch up to me and ride along. I would love to share the road with ya and ‘til I get to write to y’all again, I will be in the wind on my cloud enjoying the ride Behind Barz.
of Big Ed...
My ride to work is 42 miles, one way from the end of my driveway. This Electra Glide makes it a dream. I bury into the throttle until I get to where the speed limit sign says 70 mph. After that I kick the clutch over to the six gear and son…this bike just rumbles like a thunder storm heading towards Clayton. Sometimes I listen to the stereo, but most times I rather just listen to those pipes sing. The seat is thick and comfy. I don’t care to put on the low profile seat that Gump gave me with the bike. Yea it would make it look cooler but who cares about looking cooler when comfort takes first prize in my book. I’m 46 years old. I’m happily married and my need to impress does not exist. I rather enjoy my bike and enjoy the ride. So I’m doing just that. This bike has made a huge difference to me already. You see, I’ve always loved to ride, but I felt a little beat up after riding the sporty back and forth to work. Older joints, and older back has gotten me wanting to soften the blows my body can take. I’m no old geezer but I’m not 18 years old, either. That’s right, reality is right in my face. There’s nothing wrong with living life on a cloud, man. Hell. My brain lives in a cloud most days so I might as well let my body join in on the fun man. Oh, and let me tell ya, what’s really cool, is when those true duals start really singing on that sixth gear. I know I just mentioned it, but bruh! Those stove pipes are just singing and I f%^king love it!

38 SOUTH DAKOTA On this day 34 years ago we were married at Rroughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon! We made the front page of the Rapid City News Journal! It was a great day! We took a trip out there again...this time with our two sons, who both ride, and their beautiful wives!! Where have the years gone!!! It was August 7th 1988. We got our marriage license in Deadwood. We rented the cabins at the origional Latchstring Inn when it was a little shack with crooked floors! Picture below was taken in front of the original Latchstring Inn!!! Welcome riders to the freeset state in the nation!!! We sure do love our 2nd Amendment (and coffee) in South Dakota!
The numbers were down for what I expected for the first year people could come from out of the country. But another great time with Chief’s Sturgis Virgins, Michele P-nut Walker and Jill Emily Oaks. My 6th trip to Sturgis in 10 years!
Chief Barbi Burkett... My friends, Linda Wilder and Diane Latham are from Bandera Texas. That is where we rode from this year to Sturgis. The ride and all of the attractions were as breathtaking as the last 2 years! We did notice the crowds were not what they have been but we didn’t have to wait in a line anywhere and actually didn’t have a difficult time finding parking. Another great trip there for the books! Looking into booking next year’s trip already!
Next year I’ll be riding to Sturgis from NC again!
The Sturgis Rally & races is held every year in August in the tiny town of Sturgis, South Dakota. The population for Sturgis is about 7 thousand. This year the 82nd Rally brought in over 500,00 bikers to Sturgis and the surrounding Black Hills. We have compiled a few pictures here of some of the amazing sights, bikes, and people Livin’ The Life at the Granddaddy of them all ~ Sturgis!

I was humbled by the encouragement, well-wishes and support I received. I want to thank my family and friends, along with Marc Hendrix and Casey Gene at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson, for their generous sponsorships. I can only hope that this has been an inspiration to others that, with courage and determination, you really can do anything you set your mind to. You’re never going to be 100% ready and it’s never going to be just the right time, but that’s the point. It means that every moment is also the right moment. If you want to do it, you just have to make it happen! 42 This is Clay Thorne. He runs CCMS Clay’s Custom Motorcyle Shop. He allowed us to use his shop, lifts, tools and knowledge to do the oil change using the oil and filters that were donated by Tucker Oil Company. He was so good at letting us either do our own oil changes or he would guide those who never have before.
Hopefully you have followed along with Lisa on her epic journey! She is back home now, safe and sound with so many cool memories and friendships made along the way. You can still us the hashtag below to see more of her photos and and read about her journey in its intirety. #HDCURLYGIRL.
What an extraordinary adventure this was! Start to finish, with 40 women - all strangers to me but one - we journeyed through 2,557 miles of rough roads, deserts and highways, varied elevations, wind, rain, hail, and sweltering heat. It was my privilege to have been able to ride with this group of authentic, badass women. And I am honored to follow in the footsteps of the women before us who paved the way like Dot Robinson, the First Lady of Motorcycling, Adeline and Augusta Van Buren, the first women to cross the U.S. on solo motorcycles, Effie and Avis Hotchkiss, mother/ daughter duo who made the first 5,000 mile journey to San Francisco from NY just to name a few.
40 women. 40 motorcycles. Kickstands up on these two-wheeled machines as they leave the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, headed for Chicago and Route 66 - The “Mother Road” - all the way to Santa Monica, Ca. The classic American journey on classic machines.
