Riding to Sturgis: A lot of people headed out to South Dakota to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Sturgis back in August of 2015. One such person who did that was one of our own Motor Maid sisters, Golden Life Member, Gloria Struck. A lot of these people who took the journey loaded up their bikes on trailers to haul their bikes on that long drive out to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Some people shipped their bikes or rented when they got there after flying to the biggest Rally in the world! Then you have those, like Gloria, who packed her bike with the bare neccesities to take that nice RIDE to Sturgis! In my book, this is the only way to go!

Gloria Struck turned 90 years young in July of 2015 at the Motor Maids 75th anniversary in Moncton New Brunswick, Canada. Gloria rode her two wheel motorcycle along side her daughter, Lori and her granddaughter, Kathy to Moncton and then back to New Jersey. Then she headed out on her bik with Kathy to Sturgis! Face Book was j ust buzzing about this after it was posted; the guys were singing Gloria’s praises, for riding her bike at 90 years young to Sturgis! Ladies, you tell me, isn’t there more adventure on 2 wheels, then in the cage!? I’m sure our Golden Life member, Gloria, would have some thoughts on that subject!!! The comments on Face Book were overwhelming and all the guys were giving Gloria the thumbs up!!!

We’ve eaten there before, and haven’t had a bad meal yet. Our server was Dale, a tall good looking young fellow with a full head of dark brown hair who could have passed for a only slightly younger version of myself. Dale took our order, gave us some hushpuppies, and within 10 minutes or less we had our food.
Dixie Queen Seafood Rest. “Jumbo Shrimp & Flounder” 252-753-6363
9157 W. Marlboro Rd. Farmville, NC Bud and Brenda took a trip down to Farmville... Having a hankering for good seafood, my friend Agent 99 / Brenda Adkins called me on Tuesday, Feb. 16th and suggested that we go to the Dixie Queen Seafood Restaurant in Farmville, NC.
99 had the jumbo shrimp, oysters and flounder, while I had the jumbo shrimp & flounder. As usual, everything was cooked to perfection, a light golden brown, and very hot. We drive from Wilson to Farmville for DQ seafood, and it is well worth the trip. Dixie Queen is owned and operated by David & Dana Hollinsworth, and there is another DQ in Winterville. You can find the Farmville DQ at 9157 West Marlboro Road. We come early since they get really busy around dinnertime and especially on Fridays and Saturdays. The parking lot is generous enough to hold a lot of bikes, and Miss Dana will welcome you as you come through the front door. Give the Dixie Queen a try if you enjoy delicious seafood. Our meal with water and tea came to $30.07.

your Health Behind Barz Some Brain Info... The human brain has amazed people throughout the ages. This month in BB Mag I am going to share some interesting facts about this in credible organ in the human body. Read, and enjoy using your brain. Weight - The weight of the human brain is about 3 lbs. No pain - There are no pain receptors in the brain, so the brain can feel no pain. Fat - The human brain is the fattest organ in the body and may consist of at least 60% fat. Stopped growing - Your brain stopped growing at age 18. First sense - The first sense to develop while in utero is the sense of touch. The lips and cheeks can experience touch at about 8 weeks and the rest of the body around 12 weeks. Unconsciousness - If your brain loses blood for 8 to 10 seconds, you will lose consciousness. Wattage - While awake, your brain generates between 10 and 23 watts of power–or enough energy to power a light bulb. Tickles - You can’t tickle yourself because your brain distinguishes between unexpected external touch and your own touch. Pain and gender - Scientists have discovered that men and women’s brains react differently to pain, which explains why they may perceive or discuss pain differently. Sadness and shopping - Researchers have discovered that those experiencing the blues are more willing to spend more money in an attempt to alleviate their sadness. Anomia - Anomia is the technical word for tip-of-the-tongue syn drome when you can almost remember a word, but it just won’t quite come to you. Juggling - Juggling has shown to change the brain in as little as seven days. The study indicates that learning new things helps the brain to change very quickly. Blinking - Each time we blink, our brain kicks in and keeps things illuminated so the whole world doesn’t go dark each time we blink (about 20,000 times a day). Laughing - Laughing at a joke is no simple task as it requires activity in five different areas of the brain. Thoughts - The average number of thoughts that humans are be lieved to experience each day is 70,000. Shakespeare - The word “brain” appears 66 times in the plays of William Shakespeare. Brain Bank - Harvard maintains a Brain Bank where over 7,000 human brains are stored for research purposes.
We are truly fearfully and wonderfully made. Keep your brain active, be safe and keep the shiny side up.

Beautiful Weather The end of January and the first few days in February were unseasonably mild here in North Carolina! Many folks got out there and enjoyed it to the fullest, from the mountains to the coast ~ Behind Barz! Good thing they did, because the bottom dropped out the first weekend and bottomed out even more the second weekend. Temps hovered at or below freezing for about 4 days...that paired with strong sustained winds of 20-30 made for some very cold temps! Various regions of NC had all kinds of frozen stuff, too: sleet, freezing rain, and snow. As I write this the third weekend is going to be in the 50’s and it’s looking up from there! All of the riders pictured here are members of the Facebook group, We Ride North Carolina, a great group of guys and gals doing what we all love to do, RIDE! Hopefully you were able to catch a few bugz between your teeth during those mah-velous days. If not, don’t worry because there is more where they came from!

from the
mind of big ed The Coors were tastin’ darn good, I do remember. I was working on a 1976 Harley frame that I had picked up from a man in Goldsboro. It came with a tank, the wheels, and a springer front end. My mind was fantasizing about how bad this bike was going to be when it was done! I started cleaning out the tank with alcohol and laying down them Silver Bullets. That’s when I noticed a cold breeze was blowing in from my make shift door. At first, I tried to close the door tighter, but this didn’t do any good. That’s when I saw the can of Great Stuff instant foam, sitting on my work bench. With a gut full of beer and feeling no pain the idea popped in my head. I’m going to fill the gap between the door and the wall and my building and I will be free of this cold breeze. With a few shakes of the can , I started blasting away with the spray of foam. ...and my idea was working. The foam started to expand and within seconds the wind was choked off front coming into my shed.
Hello you Happy Riders!!! Working on your sled man, just makes me feel good y’all. Unless I’m down in the middle of B.F.E and there’s nothing for miles and your phone is dead. That’s when working on your sled becomes a major issue and leaving your bike on the side of the road for parts is not an option, but what I’m saying when I say working on my sled is when I’m at the comforts of being in my own pig pin. Yelp, you got your stereo blasting some old scratched up C.D. that you dubbed yourself cause today’s radio stations all have lost their balls and are playing songs that are far from being what the radio station claims to be. Like this big country station here, they want to tell me Luke Bryan is a country singer. Yeah... And cats love jumping off a ocean fishing pier too, right? Or Rock stations playing rap...What in the hell is the world coming to? Dang this country is going to hell in a gas truck! So, if you’re like me. You dub some real music on a CD and jam out on your sled as you polish the chrome or tighten up nuts and bolts. Which, brings me to my article I’m typing today... Being a man in his shed, with his tools, with his half naked girlie poster hanging on the walls, with his stereo blasting his own music and his choice of cold beer, a man feels at home. He is at one with his own element. I’ve had many occasion like this and once I get started working in my own element, I tend to take down some cans of beer.
Feeling accomplished, I drunk another beer and started working on my tank again. After about 15 minutes or so tho, the slushing sound of alcohol in the tank alerted me of the alcohol I had slushing around inside me. I had to go, and I had to go bad!! So, I sprung to my feet and hit the door running, but was stopped in my tracks, cause the door I had sealed with foam wouldn’t open. Yelp, I had sealed myself in my own tomb. I pushed and I pushed, the door wouldn’t give a half an inch. Y’all this was 3/4 in plywood. Do you smell what I stepped in. I was in trouble. I was drunk and in need of relief. So, I did what any drunk would do when you have to releve yourself and have access to an assortment of power tools...I grabbed my drill and a holesaw bit and made my self a hole...of uh...of accountable size for...uh... Myself to fit myself thru. That was one big hole in my wall. More then enough, I promise ya. Yeah, it took me about an hour and a few razor blades, but I was able to finally escape my self made prison. So to the ladies who read this. Be sure to check on your man once in awhile, when he is out in the shed. You know, to be sure you’re not having to collect on that life insurance too soon, especially when he has been drinking. That’s going to be all for today. And remember, keep an empty jug around for them for those just in case moments, and I’ll be seeing you Behind Barz. Big Ed (2Timer)

~Final Wish Ride~
Mr. Larry Jacksonville, NC There have been many times in my life where I have been awed by the nature of the biker community to come together in a brother’s or sister’s time of need but never so much as in early January. In late December this Facebook post caught a lot of folk’s attention…“Larry only has a few weeks to live. He has stage 4 cancer. His last wish is to ride on a Harley. There is a trike owner that is doing the honor since Larry is too weak to hold up one himself. This is short notice but everyone available to escort this man who spent many years trucking across country for his final wish please come out and be with him. Staging is at the Mcdonalds/gas station in Jacksonville at the intersection of Hwy 24 and Western Blvd across from TT. Please pass the word and share this event if ya can or can’t make it. No entry fee just show some love. Rev. Jason & Boog& Pearce.” The post simply asked for help with having a trike available for an ailing man’s last wish and for anyone wishing to join in to escort the ride. The post was shared among the biker community and it was a surprise to those who had originally created the Facebook post that on January 3, 2016 over 130 motorcycles, a couple of car clubs and many people in cars and trucks from all over eastern NC met in Jacksonville to escort Mr. Larry. During an interview with the family we were told how awed they were at the number of people who had shown support for Mr. Larry and how happy they were his final wish for one last ride was made possible. This is what true brotherhood and sisterhood is all about……coming together as a family, Sadly, before I could get my article to the magazine, I received a text message announcing Mr. Larry had passed away. May you rest in peace Mr. Larry. I, along with many others, was honored to have been a part of your final wish ride.

One more ride …. From The Darkness The rain creased another line across his face … a face leather’d from miles … after miles, over forty-odd years out there rubber-side barely down skimming sheets of water, strands of iced-white hair whipping and carving new road-worn scars taunting and daring the Grim Reaper for one more ride — He didn’t much care about the cold seeing how it wasn’t much different from the stares of loved ones – holding back their warmth, hoping to stop him. It was just one more time He had to look away —One more time he’d narrow his eyes searching for a horizon a day’s ride ahead and maybe a waitress with a welcome knowing and a friendly smile – waiting for him calling him for one more ride …. © July 1, 2012 / mswm Shadow-Wolf of the Shire Road Scribes of America ™
The darkest night of autumn Fades into winter morn, As the old year is ending Another’s being born. Christmas bells will fade away Drown in the bonfires light The ghost of last years image Moves shapeless out of sight. Some say the festive season Is steeped in pagan ways Celtic lads and lassies Respond with hearty nays. Midnight knocks on New Years door A lad clutches a lump of coal A tall dark and handsome lad Who could ask for more? If he's first across the threshold First to wish you cheer A tall dark and handsome lad Means the finest for your year. Careful now not to break the spell Don't be putting out the light There's plenty of shadows of New Years past Unlocked on the dead of night. One Of The Guys She climbed onto the saddle Stretched out her little legs Determined to be like her granddad But her feet couldn’t reach the pegs. With her tiny little hands, She clung tight to those handle bars. She flashed the biggest brightest smile, As she waved at passing cars. From her pink leather vest Down to her black chained boots, The love of the wind Was deep down in her roots. She’d ride with her grandpa Around the block and down the street. The Inside You can’t judge a book by its cover so they say But many do so anyway You can never tell what lies within Until you open it and begin The same goes for people different than you Their looks, their dress, or what they do Squeaky clean common or big, bald, and tattooed We all have skeletons that we hide away And reasons for what we do and say But if you judge you may never see or understand What’s on the inside is what makes the man Some bad, some good or so I’ve seen But don’t try to walk on water to make you clean You are a man the same as I Let judgment wait for the day you die So if you judge let that be on you If you do judge me you will never know the truth
A decent job to pay the bills A ride to call my own A righteous ol' lady waiting for me Whenever I get home An open road with cagers few On a brisk cold sunny day An open door with welcoming arms And a warm embrace A moonlit highway A fresh paved road Another gear up on the throttle The simple life is the one I live As long as there's roads to be traveled © Eddie Sorez Road Scribes Of America ™

The world of customized motorcycles is vast and varied. A Bikers compulsion to modify and customize their motorcycles, no doubt unleashes a deep desire to express ones tastes and individuality. From old school Biker, to the new breed of guys and gals turning a wrench in backyard garages, to famous custom builders, the desire to take a motorcycle, modify and customize it and make it their own, has never dissappeared. These custom creations are the future of the next generation of motorcycles.....

He cut the frame and started building on the same day. The bike was finished in March of 2013. When asked why he chose a Metric bike, he stated " That's what I have always ridden and I wanted to prove that you could customize a Metric bike just as good as any other bike." I'd say...Tim proved his point!!! Badazz bike Tim!!

Chapter Five...The Oracle On my way to see the Oracle I spotted him filling his bike up at Jack’s Grocery, so I pulled in next to him. He looked over to me and said “How are you?” Then I handed him the envelope from Brain & said “Can we go somewhere & talk?” He said that he was in route to the Biker Barn to have his ride serviced and suggested that I follow him. When we arrived, Gary took his bike back into the shop & we had a seat out front. “I know you’re the Oracle, and I need your help.” He gave me a puzzled look, and then read the letter to himself. “Tell me what happened? You seem to know about me, now I want to know about you.” I explained what happened, how we’d been to the future and back, and that Brain said maybe he could help us to not make any tragic errors. I was putting a whole lot of faith in a man I had just met. “If all this is true, I’m going to need to have you checked out by a technician. Once he tells me what we’re working with, perhaps I can be your ‘handler’ and we can progress.” “Can you give me anything to go on now?” I asked. “I’m not at liberty to divulge a lot, but if what you’re saying is true, you & your motorcycle have undergone a molecular transformation at the sub-atomic level. The Company has been trying to accomplish that for a while, with some limited success.” “The Company? By that you mean the C I..” He stopped me short. “Let’s just call it The Company from now on.” “Got it.” I said. “Need to know and all that.” “Don’t take this all as fact until you’ve been checked out by the Wizard, but a think tank came up with these likelihoods. As long as you’re able to time travel, you won’t age. You may be able to alter your mass and the mass of your bike. That means you could decrease your mass enough to travel close to the speed of light on land, increase it until you are virtually immoveable, or make your exterior so hard you could be impervious to bullets or even rockets, nuclear devices too, I suppose. With some assistance from the Wizard, you could conceivably become a transdimensional traveler. One thing I’m sure of though, you will be of great interest to the Company.” I told the Oracle about Zeke and Suicide Sue, and that none of us were about to spend the rest of our days in a lab being tested by a team of mad scientists. I also explained to him that Sue wasn’t suicidal, but getting on her bad side could be, and since we could travel through time there were places and people we wanted to see.

story: Bud Dunlap “Don’t worry, they won’t want to keep you, but they will want to record your adventures and examine the data. And then there’s the ‘favor’. If The Company does something for you, they will most certainly want something from you in return. If you folks are going to visit the past or the future, I suggest you get started. I’ll get things set up with your technician, the Wizard for a week from now. I’ll be in touch.” With that, I left the Oracle and went to share my news with Zeke and Sue. The next day we all met up at Frank’s Place in LaGrange to make our travel plans. Frank welcomed us in and set us up with cold drinks. Our list of places and faces was eventually narrowed down to 4. We all agreed that we wanted to see Dot Robinson compete in the Jackpine National Endurance Championship in Michigan in 1940, watch the fun at Hollister from a safe distance, meet Mr. Harley and Mr. Davidson, and see the legendary Burt Monroe set a new record on the Bonneville Salt Flats on the world’s fastest Indian.
Chapter Five That didn’t stop us from having a great time by any means. We got to the Jackpine, parked our bikes in some woods & covered them up with old blankets & tarps we’d brought along for the trip. Sue got to meet Dot Robinson, give her a hug & wish her good luck in the competition. Those early bikers were some hardy people, I’ll tell you, friendly too. We got offered burgers & dogs, cold soft drinks & beer. No plastic bottles of water in this time, so we gratefully accepted some nice cold bottles of ginger ale & RC Cola. We stayed for a while, enjoying our cold drinks & hot food, while watching the riders bounce along on their machines though the woods and the mud. It was a great time, but since we couldn’t come to the same time twice, I had to tell Sue that we should be going. We said goodbye to our new friends from the past and made our way home to the Hidden Highway. Heading west this time so we would travel into the future we wicked our sleds up to 75MPH past a round barren area that looked suspiciously like the ‘event’ area back in our time, and found ourselves right where we hoped, slowing down on the Hidden Highway. Checking my cell phone confirmed we were back in our time. I had also missed a call from the Oracle.
art: Tabatha Ferrell Since none of us had ever seen a lady, race offroad, on a Harley-Davidson, with a sidecar, Sue got her wish. We rode out to the hidden highway, pointed our bikes east so we would travel back in time & made sure we were going a steady 75 MPH as we passed by the ‘event’ area. After the usual flash & glitter we decelerated to find ourselves on a dirt road going through a heavily wooded, unpopulated area. It seems that the Hidden Highway had been a rural road in the past. Using ded’ reckoning & blind outhouse luck we were able to go super-speed and reach Michigan in a few hours. Stopping once in a while for water in the bikes & us, we got directions to the Jackpine event from friendly folks who thought our bikes were the ‘cat’s meow’ but otherwise didn’t pay much attention to us. Being in 1940 with money made in the early 2000’s had its drawbacks. Essentially, we didn’t have any money! .
But first we decided to celebrate our first successful trip going back in time with some delicious rib-eye steaks from the Beefmastor Inn. After we ate I called the Oracle back. As usual, he was brief. “It’s time for you to meet the Wizard.”
Chapter Six We’re Off to See the Wizard The Oracle sent me an email directing us to go to Tippett’s Mill & ask for Bobby. Oddly enough as I was reading the message it was fading from my computer screen & then disappeared altogether. How do those guys do that? We’d all been to Tippett’s Mill before, had enjoyed the food, music & company of other bikers and talked with Bobby on several occasions. As usual, he was sitting out front watching the world go by.

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter Six continued... When we walked up to him he simply glanced at us, then handed me an envelope. “Who gave this to you Bobby?” I asked. “Not supposed to say.” was his terse reply. I let it go. Bobby is a bit of a local legend and I didn’t want to upset such a good guy. Sue, Zeke & I moved over by the pond & opened the envelope. Inside was a map & directions to our meeting with the Wizard. We were to go just a few miles down the road & turn onto a farm path. It also said to leave immediately. We did just that. About a quarter mile down the path we saw a Dodge dualie hooked up to a large camper without any markings. As we pulled up to the truck the side of the camper opened up & something looking like a really large MRI tube came out, resting on the ground. The Wizard wasn’t what we were expecting either! From the front door of the camper stepped a beautiful young woman with skin the color of ripe Concord grapes that grow in vineyards in the North East area of Pennsylvania. She was wearing a yellow sun dress and had her long hair in a ponytail flowing over her shoulder. She looked amazing. For sure she couldn’t possibly be the Wizard! “Hey y’all, nice to see you.” She said, her brilliant smile gleaming. “I’m the Wizard.” You could have knocked me over with a pin feather! She was all business, that young lady. First she had each one of us ride our bikes into the big MRI tube looking thing & sit still for a couple of minutes while she stood to the side working a remote control panel. Within 15 minutes or so it was all over & she was packing up shop. What does one say to a wizard? “Hey there.” Was as clever as I could muster. “Excuse me miss”. I said. “Could you answer a few tiny questions for us, if you have the time?” “Sure.” She replied. “If I can.” What do you want to know?” “Well….uh….first off, what should we call you? Somehow referring to you as the Wizard seems in no way appropriate.” “You can call me the Wizard. Next question.” “Okay….Can you explain what has happened to us & our bikes. We’re a bit in the dark & the Oracle really hasn’t told us much.”
32
“Do you have advanced degrees in applied physics, anatomy, atomic theory or tachyon mechanics?” She asked. “Uh…nope, but I got a solid D- all through high school, and it only took 5 years.” I answered. “That makes me the smart one in my family.” “It shows.” She said with a smile. “Well, I do have those degrees, and more. I’ve been to Cal Tech, Virginia Tech, MIT, and special colleges that are unknown & unavailable to non-Company types. Even though I’ve spent time with Stephen Hawking, I don’t have his ability to simplify something as wholly unknown & unique as you three.” The Wizard explained; “I’ll know more after I analyze the data I just collected, but I can tell you this, although I can’t tell you why; The hard laws of physics are being notoriously lenient with the three of you. It could take years to figure out what is going on with you and your machines, and at this moment in time, there isn’t even a name for your ‘condition’, so let’s just call it ‘Pretty Magic.’ You three are travelling in scientifically uncharted territory, so I’ll just keep it light.” “Works for us.” Zeke said. Sue & I agreed. “What should we do now?” I asked. “I’m going to review the data, see if I can cook up some device to help you guys, and then report to the Oracle. You’ll be hearing from him in a week or two.” She told us. We thanked the Wizard for her time and headed off to see Roy and Kathy at The Copper Kettle for dinner. While eating, we discussed our trip through time to see Dot Robinson, and how we take another ride into time. I remembered that we had promised Brain to come back to the future & share our experiences with him. Seeing my greatgranddaughter Debbie again sounded nice too. We’d all seen the Brando movie ‘The Wild One’, and knowing as how bikers are rarely displayed in a positive light, we decided to travel back to July of 1947 & see what really happened in Hollister, California with our own eyes, then go forward into the future & report in with Brain. I thought about checking in with the Oracle, but he probably knew what we were up to before we did. I wondered what the CIA had planned for us. For sure they weren’t going to give us something, without wanting something in return. Man, would I be surprised when I found out where they were sending us!

wreaths acr On December 12, 2015 many Wayne County Bikers along with the American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard and other Veteran Bikers came together with leaders in the community to participate in laying wreaths on the veteran’s graves at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Wayne County. The Eastern Wayne High School JROTC Posted Colors and the Rosewood High School JROTC presented the POW MIA Table with the symbols of remembrance and honor. What an honor to remember those who fought for our freedom. From the moment of silence, the Posting of Colors, hearing the National Anthem sung, the wreaths laid and the playing of Taps…all done in remembrance, in honor, to teach.

Yet there is a story behind all that was done….. The idea for Wreaths Across America (WAA) started in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company, found his company with a large surplus of wreaths near the end of the holiday season. As a young child he had visited Arlington National Cemetery. “I didn’t want to throw them away, they were nice and fresh so I thought about Arlington, because of the impact it had on me as a boy,” said Morrill, as he looked out onto the spread of trees used to make hundreds of thousands of wreaths each year. With the help of then Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, Worcester was able to make arrangements to have the surplus wreaths placed at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. They were placed in an older section of the cemetery, one that received less and less visitors every year. A local trucking company provided transportation of the wreaths to Arlington and volunteers from a local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts paired with community members to decorate the wreaths with a traditional red, handmade bow. Members of the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C., helped to organize the wreath-laying, which included a special ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Yearly Mr. Morrill and volunteers laid the wreaths quietly. In 2005 a photo was published of their hard work and love and then many volunteer requests came in wanting to help. Many requests came to him for wreaths for the veterans cemeteries.

He was unable to provide wreaths for all but he began sending seven wreaths, representing each branch of the military and POW/MIA service members to every veteran cemetery that wanted to participate in WAA day. In 2014, WAA and volunteers worldwide laid over 700,000 wreaths at 1 ,000 locations. WAA was also able to include wreath laying ceremonies at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the September 11 tragedies. WAA was also able to accomplish covering Arlington National Cemetery, placing 226,525 wreaths. In 2015 many more wreaths were laid. To make this possible WAA has had help from over 2,000 fundraising groups, corporate contributions and donations of trucking, shipping and countless volunteers. Many Bikers will ride escort for the wreaths on the day that they are to be laid.
Thank-you Wreaths Across America for what you do, for allowing us to give back to those who have given their lives so we may be free, to remember our veterans, and be an example to our youth.
Will placing a wreath on his Dad's grave. On 12 December 2015 the Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine Crew had the honor of attending the Wreaths Across America Ceremony held at Evergreen Cemetery in Princeton, NC. After the opening ceremony was held, the wreaths were passed out to place on the Vets grave sites and everyone was encouraged to look up the person’s name and find out their history. I noticed a little boy running up to get a wreath and he took it and was holding it so proudly, so I quietly followed behind him and I had assumed that it was his mother with him. I asked her if she minded that I took pictures of him placing the wreath on a Vets grave for our magazine. She agreed while we continued to head towards a grave, I asked her what the child’s name was. She said his name was Will and that he was 5 years old. She said he is placing a wreath on his Father’s grave today. I froze, tears began to flow and I couldn’t stop shaking. The lady I was talking to was the child’s grandmother...the mother of the Soldier whose grave Will was fixing to place a wreath on. PFC Andrew Sass, killed during a training exercise at the age of 23 in October of 2014. The wreath was proudly placed by Will in honor of his dad. As you can see by the pics on this and the previous page, there were 525 soldiers honored that day at that cemetery, alone! Each one with their own story. I did take the time to look up Andrew Sass’s story...Amazing indeed!

Bill Lyerly at Nash Arts

A
merican roots rock rebel Bill Lyerly has a fascination with Europe that follows the tradition of two famous bluesman with whom he has performed. Both John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley found a great echo in the Old World for theri music, a scenario which has also led Lyerly to establish himself in the Basque Country. This veteran guitarist, singer/songwriter and keyboard artist has had a magnificent response from the public who flock to his live performances. Like those shows, Lyerly records showcase his own unique vision of American roots music. Lyerly began his musical career at age eleven after hearing the blues/rock influenced music of the British Invasion. He played with bands throughout middle school, high school and college and in 1975 co-founded Super Grit Cowboy Band, called “the South’s hottest honky tonkers” by The Village Voice. In 1980 Lyerly signed with RCA Nashville and began writing and recording albums and CDs, which include: Prodigal Son, Higher Ground, From The Old School, Railroad Station Blues, Colbalt Blues, Motel Room Blues, Requiem Mess, The Twang Years and Too Hurt To Cry. From 1999-2000 Lyerly was nominated for five CAMMYs, an East Coast rhythm and blues award, and won Best New Artist in 2000. Other greats Lyerly has performed with include: REM, Paul Rodgers, Gregg Allman, Eric Burdon, Levon Helm, John Mayall and many more!
VIRGINIA MOTORCY As everyone is aware, the Virginia General Assembly (GA) is in session right now and will be making decisions on a variety of bills, most of which will touch us all in one way or another. And a few of them will affect us as motorcyclists. I recently attended Virginia Motorcycle Lobby Day, sponsored by the political action committee, Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM). How do I describe the experience? It was fun, educational and certainly eye -opening. We met at 1:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Crossroads, Jan. 17, in Richmond to review what’s been happening over the past year; as well as to discuss the bills before the GA this session, the position VCOM is taking on this year’s bills, and how to reach out to your legislators. The room was packed – by my count there were probably 100 participants in attendance, mainly ABATE, Buffalo Soldiers and HOG. Listed below are some of the topics covered: * “Watch for Motorcycles” signs. These are new to Virginia. Four signs are currently in Lynchburg and four different locations for sign have been identified in Tazewell County. To request a sign for dangerous intersections, contact Matt Danielson at matt@motorcyclelawgroup.com or the local VDOT residency http://www.virginiadot.org/about/districts.asp. VDOT will do a study to determine if they should post a sign at that location. Many thanks to Stan Bryant of Lynchburg. * I-81 construction. VDOT will be working on the bridges around the I-81 Natural Bridge area. Because it will be dangerous for motorcycles on the interstate while construction is taking place, VDOT is working on plans to move motorcycles off I-81 to bypass construction and then route motorcycles back on the interstate after they’ve passed the construction.
Several events are also in the works. The first one is “Bikers Inside the Beltway,” May 12. This event, sponsored by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, is the perfect opportunity to reach out to your legislators up in DC. For more information and to join the MRF, go to http://motorcycleridersfoundation.wildapricot.org/. The other event is the “Tip-to-Tip Ride” from Cumberland Gap, Tn., to Chincoteague, Va. The date for that ride is June 4-5. This ride is sponsored by the Virginia Bikers Association (VABA). Go to www.vabikers.org for more information about the ride and about the VABA.
* Electronic signs. For large events and major motorcycle traffic through/within Virginia, VDOT will fire up their variable message signs to alert drivers about increased motorcycle traffic. Matt Danielson, matt@motorcyclelawgroup.com, is the go-to person to request the use of the electronic signs. Contact him as far in advance as possible. The signs are also going to be used during the month of May, Motorcycle Awareness Month. * Department of Motor Vehicles presented Virginia’s motorcycle stats. Briefly, fatalities are down for 2015 by 9 percent. Out of approximately 2,000 crashes, more than 900 were single vehicle crashes. There’s no way of knowing the extenuating circumstances- animals, road conditions, etc.; however, are we our own worst enemy? Does this call for more rider training? Most crashes occur 9p.m.-11p.m. Day: Sunday. Month: May (Motorcycle Awareness Month).

CYCLE LOBBY DAY story & photos: Pam Jewell
And, congratulations to Wes Hurst, VABA founder and director. He received the “Leading Wheel Award,” which is given out every year to the person who has done something significant for motorcycles – not just for one year, but over the long term. Everyone who was interested in talking to their legislators or aides about the upcoming bills was encouraged to meet in the morning and gather at the General Assembly (GA) Building. This is where it got interesting. It was also the same day the gun and anti-gun lobby groups were meeting at the GA Building. While motorcyclists were wandering the halls of the GA Building, so were the gun lobbyists with a variety of weapons strapped to various body parts. The most interesting sight, or so I thought, was the guy with the big leather hat; holstered, sawed-off shotgun; and a belt carrying all of his shotgun cartridges.
BILLS OF INTEREST FOR MOTORCYCLISTS Rather than list all of the Bills here, I encourage everyone to go to http://vcomonline.org/bills-of-interest/ . The bills being either followed, supported or not supported by VCOM are listed on this site and are explained in laymen’s terms. A couple of other bills being followed by VCOM, but not listed on their website are: * SB117 – Opening Motor Vehicle Doors. (Supported by VCOM) This bill punishes those who park on the side of the street and open their door without looking to see if it is safe to do so. Such conduct would be punishable by a $100 civil penalty. * HB119 – Motor Vehicle Exhaust Systems. (Opposed by VCOM) This bill removes the requirement that an exhaust system be stock or comparable to stock. I would merely require that the vehicle be equipped with an adequate exhaust system in good working order so as to prevent excessive or unusual levels of noise. Adequate is an extremely vague standard, while almost certainly unconstitutional, invites abuse by law enforcement. (VCOM’s comments – not mine.) For more information about these bills, go to https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?161+men+BIL. Each Bill can be tracked by number. In addition, to contact your legislators regarding these or any other bills and you’re not sure who that is or how to contact them, you can go to http://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov/ and type in your address. You will get a list of your state and federal legislators – always a good thing to know!

Obama's Monument Designations Penalize Off-road Enthusiasts American Motorcyclist Association calls on Congress to reinstate off-highway-vehicle recreation areas.
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- President Barack Obama's
designation of three new national monuments in California on Friday penalizes off-highway-vehicle enthusiasts by elimiSince assuming office in 2009, President Obama has used nating existing trails and riding areas in the Mojave Desert, his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish or expand the American Motorcyclist Association reports. 17 national monuments covering more than 265 million acres of public lands and waters -- more than any other "The American Motorcyclist Association is calling on all offroad enthusiasts to press Congress for the restoration of lost president. riding areas," said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations. "We cannot allow our responsible access to public lands to be further eroded." In his announcement Friday, the president designated the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow and Castle Mountains national monuments, using his authority under the American Antiquities Act of 1906.
“We believe the president has consistently overreached his authority as outlined in the Antiquities Act,” Allard said. “Monument designations that go beyond the original legislative intent and impact large areas should be determined by the Congress, under a process in which there is public input, not behind the walls of the White House, with very little, if any, public input at all.”
The designations affect 1.8 million acres that were excluded Cook said Friday that he plans to continue his effort to get from the 1994 California Desert Protection Act and eliminate his bill -- HR 3668, the California Minerals, Off-Road Recreation, and Conservation Act -- passed. 142,000 acres of off-highway-vehicle recreation areas. "This executive order from the president goes against the intent of Congress," Allard said. "We had supported bills that would have allowed the monument designations while preserving existing areas for responsible off-road recreation." U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) has pushed bills in Congress to obtain monument status for the land. And U.S. Rep. Paul Cook, whose district encompasses the area, introduced a similar bill. Both bills also would have protected OHV areas already in use. However, when her efforts proved unsuccessful, Feinstein petitioned the president to use his authority under the Antiquities Act.
Feinstein pledged Friday to introduce new legislation in Congress that would provide permanent protection for five off-highway recreation areas covering about 142,000 acres within the new monuments. She said protection of the OHV areas could not be included in the president’s action. “We sincerely hope that Sen. Feinstein does introduce her bill,” Allard said. “If she does, we will work hard to see that it gets passed and signed into law. Access to public lands is one of the most important issues for our members. And we need all off-road enthusiasts to join the AMA and support us in this effort.”
