5th annual relay for life ride

Brogden United Methodist Church in Dudley North Carolina, Relay For Life Team sponsored their 5th Annual Relay For Life Ride on Saturday, March 15, 2014. It was a wonderful-sunshine-clear day for a ride. Home cooked breakfast to start out with biscuits, grits, juice, coffee, eggs and bacon. They had door prizes that were donated and ranging from Girl Scout Cookies, Gift Certificates, Motor Cycle parking signs, and Mt. Olive Pickles, to Gun Cleaning kits! More than 60 bikes and many supporters came for the ride. They rode over 200 miles through the highways, the by ways, the side roads, back roads, visited White Lake and finished up with a great lunch at Hwy 55 in Mount Olive. Frankye Watson was the coordinator and she did a great job to bring things together. Together they raised over $1,300 for the American Cancer Society. Thank-you to Brogden United Methodist Church, one of the many fine organizations that serve, help and assist those who are living with cancer. Keep the rubber to the road!

Allen West ~ GUARDIAN OF THE REPUBLIC We received a copy of Allen West’s book back in December of 2013 to include in an upcoming issue of BB as a review. I must say, it is well worth the read! Lt. Colonel West is a true Patriot who has the same beliefs as many of us in the Biker World - FAITH, FAMILY & FREEDOM! He remains steadfast and loyal to these values and has devoted his life to the preservation of American freedom, liberty and oportunity. In GUARDIAN OF THE REPUBLIC West speaks out against threats to our American way of life and offers real solutions to the issues that have torn our nation apart for way too long. With his distinctive, no-holds-barred approach, West tackles the lousy policies of the Obama administration, the conflicying philosophies of governance, thecaricature of black conservatism painted by the Left, the tyranny of big government and offers his vision for the future of America - the country he loves, and would die to defend. Allen West is the third of four generations of military members in his family. He joined the Army in 1982, was deployed to Kuwait during Desert Storm, and he did tours of Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was elected to Congess in 2010, representing the 22nd district of Florida for one term. Within the pages of this book (released 1 April 2014) is the inspiring life of Lieutenant Colonel, Allen West, his uncensored views as a veteran, Patriot, former Congressman, Conservative Icon, and warrior for personal liberty! Relay for life

Relay For Life... On March 30, 2014 on a very chilly, bone shaking, lips quivering day a Relay for Life Ride was held. The ride left Hometown Harley Davidson in Winterville, N.C. and headed to Open Road Biker Gear in Goldsboro. There the riders had a warm up stop and then continued on to another stop in Goldsboro for the end of the run. At the end of the ride there was warm food, door prizes, music and a final thaw before everyone rode home. There is no challenge too big or day too cold, to ride for Relay For Life to help brothers and sisters who are living with Cancer.

Caws for the paws On April 5, 2014 the Unspoken Sons M/C sponsored a Caws for the Paws Motorcycle Ride for the Lenoir County SPCA. Donations and pet food were accepted for participation in the ride. Door Prizes, 50/50 drawing, and a time for fellowship and food at Applebee’s afterwards was offered. The Lenoir County SPCA mission is devoted to finding loving homes for the homeless pets at their shelter, preventing cruelty to animals, providing education on responsible pet ownership, and encouraging humane animal control through spay & neuter initiatives. They say over 9 homeless animals come to their shelter every day needing help. Mr. Ronnie Ingram, a fellow motorcycle rider, shared how his family helps The Lenoir County SPCA take care of the animals, provide transportation to a rescue organization in Virginia, and just do whatever is needed. Thank-you Unspoken Sons M/C for helping to show care and love to precious animals that need a second chance. USSFFUSS.

Don’t be skeered!

Guilty Girlz RC of Michigan was established in the fall of 2011 by a group of women that think motorcycles aren't just for men! Guilty Girlz is the first women’s club to be a member of the Michigan Confederation of Clubs Motorcycle Association (MCOC). The MCOC is a male dominated organization, but the men have graciously made a place for us. We want to do this right, because we’re making history here in Michigan and intend to show that women can run a strong club, too. We have expanded all over Michigan. We currently have three chapters Lansing, Metro Detroit, and Mid-Michigan. Our Girlz come from all over Michigan as far as Standish, the Ohio-Michigan border and to the Kalamazoo area. It’s been a very interesting learning experience and not always an easy one. But one worth the struggles, because we have a club to be proud of! Please check out our website at guiltygirlz.com or on our Face Book page. Picture is the Metro Detroit Chapter. Photograph by Beverly Roberts.

HABO: Help A Brother Out Foundation, Inc. Out in Apex at the Local Bar, a benefit BBQ for a fallen friend brought together a group of giving folks who then decided: “Hey, why not, let’s do dinner for charity every Wednesday night.” And thus, HABO was born — out of necessity, out of a need in our community to be there and ready to “Help A Brother Out.” The brainchild of Felipe Wilkie and Jerry Weinberg of the Chatham Rabbits riding club, HABO quickly took on a life of its own. Volunteers stepped up to prepare and serve meals, sell raffle tickets, organize poker runs, and work with HABO to touch the lives of those in need. According to Weinberg, “HABO’s mission is to offer assistance to motorcycle enthusiasts, their families, friends and our community either financially or with essential services during those times when they need support the most.”

Kaiden and Mackenna, both 2 years old. Farmville North Carolina

HABO moved swiftly to incorporate and gain status as a taxfree charity. And HABO has already raised thousands to serve its mission. In addition, Felipe Wilkie has been networking to create synergies between HABO and other riding clubs and local charitable efforts. Wilkie said, “Come out and join us at a HABO event, and not only will you help others, but chances are you’ll have a bunch of fun and meet some great likeminded folks.” HABO does not limit its charitable outreach to any one segment of the community, but being members and strong supporters of the motorcycle community, much of the effort is focused on those bikers who have through no fault of their own suffered a fall, serious illness or other hardship. HABO will assist with rent, mortgage, utility bills, food and other necessities during the recovery process. HABO’s assistance knows no boundaries of race, creed, or religious affiliation. “Our dedicated volunteers and generous supporters are here to serve all of God’s children,” says Robert Spencer, HABO first contact for assistance. “We live our lives with the certain knowledge that ‘We Are Our Brother’s Keeper.’” Join HABO for dinner every Wednesday night at the Local Bar, Highway 64, Apex. To join HABO, for questions, for joint ventures with your charitable organization: Robert Spencer | 919-805-4395.

Never Judge A Bo

OB1

Veteran & Patrio

Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do! We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts! That old adage is true...Never Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

OB1 started riding in 2000 and is presently on his 5th Harley. As we are going to press OB1 is just shy of 4,000 miles - of achieving his 200,000 mile HOG mileage award!!! Ob1 says that he truly believe in the MSF courses, and takes one every two years or when he acquires a new bike - whichever comes first. He also highly encourages everyone to check out the Bike Safe program put on by local law enforcement agencies here in N.C. They are free and provide actual on the road experience and feedback. OB1 was born and raised in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Oscar Smith HS in Chesapeake, Va in 72', joined the US Air Force (even though he had a high draft number) since he had been in Jr. ROTC. He went in with a career field, a stripe on his shoulder, spent only 7 days in basic for a Uniform issue and weapons qualification. He spent almost a year in tech school learning Electronic Counter Measures - Radar Jamming. He then worked on A-7's in Myrtle Beach AFB, and F-4's in Torrejon, Spain. Later he had orders for Ubon, Thailand - but they got canceled just 30 days before he was suppose to deploy, as the Viet Nam war was starting to wind down. OB1 started working for General Electric back in 1977 with their Medical Equipment division. He worked on X-Ray machines, CT Scanners, MRI systems, Patient Monitoring. His job description/title grew over a 36 1/2 year period from technician, to Manager, to Project Manager. He moved around a lot, VA. Beach, Syracuse, N.Y., Boston, MA., and Durham, NC. He says he is presently retired and LOVING every minute of it! Over the years he has been a member of multiple Veterans organizations. Once he learned to ride, he caught up with a Rolling Thunder group in Myrtle Beach and became a member at large in S.C. Later, he move to Morrisville and transferred membership to Rolling Thunder Chapter NC-4. He has been standing for Fallen Heroes since 2004 and then left RT after some changes at the top and their direction, to become a member of the Patriot Guard Riders and latter a Ride Captain. He started riding with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association in 2011. Went on a 'Charlie Mike' ride (continue the mission) that Honored Korean War Veterans (1,000 miles in 24 hours) and earned his first Iron Butt - and has since done a total of 3 Iron Butt rides! Ob1 officially joined CVMA in January of 2012 and is currently a member. He is the NC 15-6 Chapter Public Relations Officer, Webmaster and Road Captain ~ averaging about 15,000 to 18,000 miles a year. Ob1 - a veteran and true American Patriot! He rides thousands of miles supporting local and national organizations and Veteran Causes - POW/MIA 's, Blue Star and Gold Star Mothers, Fallen Heroes, the USO, the Fisher House, Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors, Snowball Express, Wreaths Across America, Flight of Honor, Flags for the Fallen, Wounded Warriors, Patriot Rovers, VA Medical Center, Durham and The Wall That Heals. He also stays active in the community by supporting Breast Cancer rides, Autism rides, and thru his Smoke Chasing efforts Foster Children. He says he learned a long time ago thru his deployments with the Air Force, moving around with GE, and working with multiple Veterans Organizations to embrace differences in culture and opinions. You've got to hear people out before you form opinions...or often stated as, you can't be listening - if you are doing all the talking. OB1 truly believes in the Art of Life - once you achieve that point in your life and you are able - there is no real difference in work or play! You live your life and put all your energies into everything you do to maximize results. He likes mixing up his fund raising with riding & having fun. His Motto - Do what you can, When you can, in Whatever way you can...sometimes it's the smallest of things you do, that make the biggest difference !!! Old Bon Jovi song - It's My Life...I just want to Live while I'm Alive !!!

The 3rd Annual

Chuck “Knucklehead” Garrett Benefit story: Chris Jones

for ALS Reasearch

On Saturday March 29th I was lucky to be present at the 3rd Annual Chuck “Knucklehead “Garrett, Benefit for ALS Research, at the Iron Order Motorcycle Club, in Washington, N.C. Even as a steady mist fell and endeavored to saturate everything, it was defeated but the sprit and dedication of the people of the I.O.M.C. As the oldest of the thirteen chapters of the IOMC in North Carolina, the Washington N.C. Chapter of the I.O.M.C. was started in 2008 by Chuck, his brother Ira “Screech “Garrett and some others. Chuck was already fighting ALS at the time, and in 2012 the club began having these events to help fund research to find a cure for ALS. Sadly last year soon after the 2nd Annual Benefit, Chuck “Knucklehead” Garrett lost his Battle with ALS. This year his brother and chapter Vice president, Ira “Screech” Garrett, rode his bike at the lead of the Poker run in memorial of his brother.

photos: Chris Jones

One could see the dedication in everyone, as IOMC brothers, Maidens, and other supporters worked to get the stage ready. Meanwhile, Lee Cherry Entertainment’s folks began to get the music playing. The festivities drove back the rain as a young songstress named, Kasey Tyndall, took the stage singing her original songs and covers from today’s country. After some raffles were drawn and many gifts passed out, Ronny Wood took the stage with his comedic music. Then we were all treated to the sounds of Carson Alley that fallowed by an epic rendition of the National Anthem by Mike Teeter. Blue Soul Redemption fallowed Mr. Teeter keeping the sprits up and rocking. The night came to a thunderous finally with the heavy metal sound of Lexx Luthor. A good time was had by all and the proceeds from it all goes to ALS research and its happening again next year! These folks are dedicated, caring and good people; these folks are bikers. That’s my view of “Life Behind Barz”.

Helen Kiss Main "The Pink Lady" Helen Kiss Main, from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, started riding motorcycles at an early age. Her dad owned the local Indian Dealership there in Pottstown. She said back then you could buy a brand new Indian Motorcycle completely outfitted with all the chrome you could put on it for $375.00. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing her on a visit to her home with other Motor Maid members back in the Fall of 2010. It was Helen’s 91st birthday!

Helen Kiss Main, the Motor Maid Icon, on the cover of the Mar-Apr 2011 issue of Behind Barz Magazine.

Helen proudly said, “I started riding at the age of 14...that was 1937 because I rode my bike to school and would give kids rides around the block.” Helen smiles proudly. “That was quite an event for a girl to ride a motorcycle to school! I don’t know what the teachers thought...she must be crazy.” I asked her, “What advice would you give young girls who are just starting to ride motorcycles today?” After thinking for a moment, she says, “Be careful! Don’t show off” Helen chuckles, “A lot of times we try to show off.” Helen looks around the room and says slowly while pointing, “Always act like a lady.” ...And a lady she was! Helen Kiss Main passed away on April 16, 2014 at the age of 94. You can read more about her in issue #37 of Behind Barz or go to the Motor Maid website listed below.

Ever heard of Big Ass Fans? Well, there is one hanging in Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson right now! You need to stop in there and check it out! It is a company based out of Kentucky that makes enormous ceiling fans, hense the name. Pictured here is a Big A$$ sign! David Dunlap made us this killer sign for our 10th Anniversary! The design is actually the art from one of our Behind Barz t-shirts. David works at Construct Inc. of Wilson, N.C. He worked after hours on his own time to create this bad boy piece of metal!!! He worked three hours to draw it out in AutoCad and then one and a half hours to cut with a CNC Automated Burn Table! It is made of 3/16 mild steel, is over 5’ in diameter and weighs in at over 150 pounds!!! David is currently a student at Wilson Community College pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. If you are interested in something similar or have some questions about it, please feel free to contact David Dunlap at:

Missy Covill, otherwise known as Iron Cowgirl, is an artist, singer and songwriter! She tells stories through her music and she is very good at it. Her stories are about life and first hand experiences. Music and motorcycles are the things that make Missy Covill feel at home while performing. Missy is from Michigan and was an only child of a single mom. She developed her intense drive and determination early on. As a young girl she wrote lyrics and made cassette player recordings. The first instrument Missy learned to play was a wash tub bass, made with a washtub, broom stick, and cotton string. She grew up camping with her horses and spent many nights around a campfire playing old country music with other musicians who played everything from spoons to a washboard. Eventually, she became the mother of three. Now in the early part of her midlife, after being a mig-welder for 20 years, she is absolutely chasing her dreams: writing, performing and recording music that mirrors her life. After overcoming cancer, and matters of the heart, she packed up everything she could fit onto her new Harley-Davidson (Mr. Bones) along with her guitar, and hit the road with only $250 in cash and a tent. Her 15,000 mile, ten-week journey chronicled in her song “Open Road,” took her around the coast of Michigan, down to the Gulf of Mexico, back up through the Smoky Mountains, and ultimately to Sturgis, South Dakota which hosts the largest annual motorcycle event in the world.

“It’s the freedom of the open road, and the people I surround through,” says Covill, “Those people gave me hope when I h carry with me for the rest of my life.” For more about Missy

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

It’s riding season and those who put their steel horses into hibernation for the winter have already woken them up. For many like me, it’s riding season all year around as long as there is no snow or ice on the road. It doesn’t do me any good in a biker magazine to bark to people to watch for bikes because the readers aren’t the ones who need to be barked at. The spring started with a double whammy for me. I lost two Christian friends and attended their funerals during the same weekend: Dee Forshey and Rudy Hendrix. I stood foot and paw with Dee in a few military funerals. I did the same with Rudy and I also rode thousands of miles with Rudy, including a SaddleSore 1000 that was certified by the IronButt Association.

Rudy Hendrix’s wake. At Rudy’s wake and funeral, I met two of Rudy’s nieces: Ella (12) and Sophia (7). My driver and I planned to leave my 2012 mission dog tag on Rudy’s casket. As the family walked from under the canopy at the grave site, my driver was on his knees and praying with me. He told me he felt he was supposed to give the dog tags to someone, but he didn’t know who. As we talked towards Rudy’s casket, I pulled him towards Sophia – she was the one who received those tags. Sophia needed those dog tags as part of her grieving for her Uncle Rudy. We doggies can sense things, and I’m fortunate that my driver is in tune with me (sometimes). Are you in tune with your furchild?

idence? I took my driver to the Bike Blessing at Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville, N.C., on April 5. We originally planned to participate in Patriot Run XII rolling out of Spring Lake, but we left our house too late to arrive at the staging area in time. We saw them rolling on NC210 as we headed towards Spring Lake, which was a very pawsome sight! We posted the video of the roll by on my Facebook page. The Bike Blessing was pawesome! We had our bike blessed in the past, but we had never attended a bike blessing event this humongous. There were hundreds of bikes. We heard people estimating a thousand! We watched as a young triker had his trike blessed and received a sticker on his helmet! That was soooo cool, and cute!

A young biker had his bike blessed!

Been There, Sniffed That While there, my driver, Craig Hardy and I talked over possible routes for my upcoming ministry trip across the USA. Like my previous trips, we’ll take lots of photos and some videos and post them on Facebook. Like our previous mission, our west coast destination is the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial in Irvine, CA, which my driver and I call the Iraq/Afghanistan War Memorial. We’ll then roll east to attend Rolling Thunder for the Memorial Day weekend and hopefully participate in the annual demonstration.

Been There, Sniffed That In March, I also had the honor (and fun) of riding in a fund raising event to benefit the War on Terror Memorial, which will be built in Holly Springs, NC. This Memorial is the Eagle Scout project of David Griffith, whose brother Sam was killed in action in Afghanistan on December 14, 2011. “Coincidentally”, when I visited the memorial in Irvine, CA in May 2012, my driver took a picture of Sam’s name on one of the pillars. I put “coincidentally” in quotes because with God, nothing is a coincidence. Although we didn’t know it at the time, that photograph was meant for a purpose. We met Major Griffith’s family several months after returning from my trip, but this was the first time we met David. My ride across the USA will probably be my last because of my age. By the time you read this article in Behind Barz, I’ll be slobbering in the wind and maybe barfing on the saddlebag a time or two. Chewy IronMutt, Behind Barz MM, reporting. Tongue in the Wind!

That Damn Deer

When my husband asked me what else I would like for Christmas besides the earrings I had mentioned before, I handed him the paper work I had on a trip out West. He said, You will be gone 5 weeks!” I said emphatically to him, “Merry Christmas to you, too!” Dianne & I left Virginia at 7am on June 6 of last year to meet another of our friends, Shirley. We were also scheduled to meet Sammie in Richmond, IN. for our first night stay. After gassing up on the other side of Charleston, WV., we got on a two lane road to head over to Rt. 35. It was then, that out of the corner of my left eye I saw a big deer jumping over the rail near the road and I just knew it was going to get one of us. All of this happend so fast but I watched in my right mirrow as the deer tried to jump over Dianne. Down she went landing in wet grass and mud - that was a good thing. Much better than the unforgiving pavement of the road we were traveling on. Dianne had on a new full face helmet, new Joe Rocket jacket and new lace upboots. I am sure that saved her from getting any worse injuries than she did. Two EMT guys just happend to be traveling in the car behind her. They jumped out of their vehicle and went right to work on her. Soon the rescue squad took her to the hospital and Shirley and I went to work putting her luggage and helmet on Shirley's trailer. I had given her pocketbook and overnight bag to them before they left with her. I had parked my bike at a car repair shop, one of the guys there got her bike to the shop where they stored it till her husband could get it. I got their card for John and took off to the hospital. It was a couple of hours before they would let us go back to her room. We were waiting on pins and needles. Finally, we were able to go into her room and see her. We saw that they had cut off all her clothes except for her new jacket and boots. To that she said, NO! They told us everything was alright, but she was to stay over night ‘til John, her husband, could get there. She kept saying that she wanted us to go on with our ride. “You have a dead line,” she said. We still had about 250 miles to get to IN. and Sammie didn't know what was going on. We had to be in Anamosa, Iowa the next day and that would be another 525 mile day. We reluctantly agreed that we had to continue on. I called Dianne as soon as we got to the motel for an update. She said they had found two hair line cracks in her back bone. She said she had kept going over and over in her mind what she could have done differently with the deer and I told her he had hit her right in the middle taking her down with him. I told her I didn't know anything she could have done differently. What did she do next? After a few days of bed rest, like the Doctor said, she went out and bought a new Harley! She put 1000 miles on it, then got it checked out and headed to Bend, OR. with some other VA. Motor Maids to meet back up with us for our 73rd Convention! Then she took off July 10th from Bend to do the Four Corners of the US. She put 12,000 miles on her new bike in 6 weeks! Over 20,000 miles by October 31!!! Goes to show you can't keep a good Motor Maid woman down! The rest of the story of our 5 week trip later. Glennadine VP MM

hello my happy riders from the mind of big ed

Hello you happy people!! You don’t think to much of (Wow!! my butt hurts!!) after a good long ride. But face it, after a full day of riding and smiling you get off your sled and you grab you butt and say...WHOAAAA!!! My a$$ hurts!! It feels good to stand up... but if you complain any at all with any of your brothers and sisters around... even tho they are thinking the same thing, they are going to tell you to wrap some rags dipped in alcohol around your ankles...yea...I know what you are thinking...how is wrapping rags dipped in alcohol going to fix a aching butt? Well, I don’t know but it will keep the ants from crawling up your leg and eating your candy a$$! Anytime I think of pain or soreness my mind drifts to Joe. He was an old Pipe welder from my days of working as a pipe welder in construction. One day my back was killing me. I mentioned this to a friend at work and he asked Joe did he have any pain meds in his lunchbox. Joe, being old and wise, reaches down and pulls out the redish color stone. He then begins to rub it on the top of his knuckles. He then looks at me and says, “Here son...this will help your back.” I looked at Joe like he had completely lost his mind. “So,” I asked, “what is that rock going to do for me?”

Joe said, “This aint no rock. It’s a healing stone.” I said, “What? A healing stone? Sure whatever.” Joe said, “No son...Seriously, It’s a healing stone.” He continued by telling me that he bought it from an Indian fellow many years ago in the mountains. He then placed the stone in my hand and said, “It really works...but not all stones heal. They have to have a certain smell.” He continued, “this one has it and it works very well. Smell it for yourself!” I placed the stone under my nose to smell it... just as Joe says to me, “Yelp, It works...I healed my hemroides with it last night!” The old basturd got me! I just looked at the old man as he and everyone around us busted a gut laughing at me. So...needless to say...I don’t say nothing when something hurts. I take my B/C and put my big boy pants on and keep going. Y’all be safe out there...and I will be seeing you Behind Barz... Big Ed (aka 2Timer)

1st Annual NC CVMA Biker Olympics Near the Fayetteville Motor Speedway on April 12th there was a lot of noise, but the track was closed. The rumble was from the Special Forces Association Grounds just down the road. It was the First Annual Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Spring Biker Olympics. CVMA members from six of North Carolina’s seven chapters and riders from other organizations came together from all across North Carolina to raise funds for four veterans charities; The Fisher House, NC Disabled American Veterans, the North Carolina Gold Star Mothers and Patriot Hunts. Riders started pouring in around 8:00 in the morning from as far away as Jacksonville and Charlotte, NC. Local music sensation Jill Charles performed a flawless rendition of the National anthem and the fun, food, games and music were underway! Vendors from North Carolina and Virginia came with sensational deals on jewelry, AMSOIL products, leather goods, motorcycle accessories and much more. The regional biker band, Rare Breed, provided music throughout the daylong activities. Biker games such as the barrel roll, balls and cones, the plank ride and scrambled eggs were played, and a twist of the Highland games featuring the Caber Toss were added in. The featured game was the "Drag" Race. And with the beautiful weather, some contestants worked up a sweat getting their dresses and wigs on! The highlight event of the day was the Special Forces Association Parachute Demonstration Team jumping in the US Flag, the CVMA Flag and the Fisher House Flag. At the end of the day, a long overdue welcome home was done for all the Vietnam Veterans present, an auction was held with items donated from sponsors such as Paraclete XP Indoor Skydiving, medals were awarded for the games and the bike show. "Blue Star" Bud Dunlap took home the most medals for events with four! Jonathan McBride, the Commander of the host Chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association commented, “It was a beautiful day to enjoy the outdoors. The combination of motorcycles, food, games, and camaraderie made for a great day. CVMA 15 truly makes a significant presence and sets the standard for raising awareness for our fellow Veterans. With the turnout for the first Annual event, it is expected to grow and become a recognized event for the Fayetteville area in the next few years. I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time and money to support this event.” The CVMA is planning on making this an annual event that is open to the public. For more information on the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association or the CVMA Annual Biker Olympics you can contact Jon McBride, the Commander of CVMA NC 15-1 at: commander.cvma.nc15.1@gmail.com

Emma’s Ride A few friends got together with the help of BFBF (Bikers For Bikers Foundation) to help Emma Roberts.

photos: One More

Emma had Rotator Cuff surgery back in January of this year and was told she would be out of work for a few months. She did not qualify for disability and tried every avenue to try to get help but to no avail. That is when her best friends, Dawn Innman and Noel Flores, went came to the rescue and created the event with BFBF. Emma says that she would like to send a huge “Thank You” to all who those that came out and supported this event and to all the vendors and the bars that participated. “It was a wonderful day with the Best of Friends that anyone one person could ever be blessed to have in their life!”

~ Applying for Social Security Disability ~ If you live a life on the edge, you’re sometimes going to fall over. If you have been injured or have gotten so sick that you can no longer work, you might want to consider applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI. SSDI is a federal system designed as a safety net for people who, after years of paying into the system, become too injured or sick to work any longer. When you are employed, you pay into the federal system throughout your professional career--your employer is required to take out SSDI premiums every month. If you look at your check stub, you’ll see the amount that is taken out as your personal contribution to the Social Security system. SSDI is a notoriously tough program that makes it difficult for people to collect. When you apply, the Federal Government looks at two things to determine your eligibility: 1) have you worked enough “quarter credits,” or have you paid enough INTO the system in order to receive benefits OUT OF the system; and, 2) Do you have a disability—that is, do you have a medical condition, injury, or illness that will prevent you from working for at least twelve months. If you meet the criteria, then you are generally qualified to receive benefits. The hard part, however, is convincing the Social Security system that you are, in fact, disabled. The process is grueling. First, your Social Security claim will be assigned to a Level-1 Disability Examiner. Based on the information that you give, that person will order all of your medical records and other information.

46

By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys. Once everything is in, the Level-1 Examiner will make an initial determination as to whether you meet the basic criteria for disability benefits. This part of the process typically takes about 3 to 4 months. Unfortunately, most folks (approximately 92%) are denied at this initial stage. This is when most people look for a lawyer who can represent them throughout their Social Security disability case. If you are denied at the first level, then the next step is to file what’s called a “Request for Reconsideration,” which sends your application to a higher-level examiner for a second review. This process typically takes an additional 2 to 3 months, and about 88% of cases are still denied. If that second examiner also denies your application, your next option is to file for a hearing before an administrative law judge who will yet again review your records, hear evidence and testimony in a court hearing, and make a determination in your case. From the time you file for a hearing to the time when you actually appear in front of the judge takes, on average, at least another 15 to 17 months. If you haven’t hired a lawyer before this step, you’ll definitely want to have one for the hearing. A lawyer on your side can argue the evidence in your case, cross-examine witnesses

If you have specific questions about SSDI, feel free to contact me directly at

dhenson@lawmed.com

(such as medical and vocational experts), and provide additional documentation that may have been missing from your file. Even if you are ultimately successful, applying for SSDI is a very long process—usually taking 2 or more years. The hardest part of the application process is remaining patient as the system moves forward. Unfortunately, the Social Security Disability system is run by the federal government and they are slow as molasses. If the judge in your hearing does not rule in your favor, that’s not necessarily the end of the road. You can appeal the judgment, and you can reapply as many times as you want. In fact, you can appeal a hearing decision AND reapply at the same time, so you can run two different pathways simultaneously in hopes that one of the two will pan out. (You can’t collect twice, but you can keep the application and appeal process going until you get your benefits, or you decide to stop applying.) One question I’m always asked is whether it is necessary to have a lawyer to apply for SSDI? I may be biased, but in my opinion you will always do better with a lawyer. Lawyers know the system: We know how to navigate the deadlines you have to meet, we’re familiar with the exact information you need to provide, and we’re used to jumping the government’s hurdles. It is a complicated and highly technical process, and I believe having a lawyer at your side will help improve your odds of being approved. Also, most lawyers handle Social Security Disability cases on a contingency fee basis, meaning that you only pay if your case is successful.

LumiLor is the impressive new technology from Darkside Scientific LLC that promises to revolutionize the custom painting business. Simply put, LumiLor is painting with light. It is a custom coating system that can be sprayed onto to any surface of any shape and geometry to allow it to produce light when powered by an electrical charge. More than glow in the dark, LumiLor actually produces it’s own light and can glow for tens of thousands of hours.

Lum

Andy Zsinko is an aftermarket painter with over 25 years of experience who developed the idea for LumiLor in 2009. During that fateful day, Zsinko had just completed a special glow-in-the-dark paint job for a friend, but was unhappy about the short life and lack of control of the glow. This frustration prompted Zsinko to begin the search for a solution to the questions, “what if I could control the light, and what if I could make it shine brightly for hours?” Soon after, he set to work creating a rough version of what would eventually become LumiLor. By June 2010 Zsinko had a prototype formula which he used on a 1976 Kawasaki Police 1000, painting the album cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on the rear box of the machine. After he finished he took the bike to a hotel in Berea, Ohio to meet up with a group of friends and when they saw iconic rainbow jutting from the prism flicker to life their jaws hit the floor. LumiLor has advanced a lot since that seminal moment, now able to emit multiple colors of light and be applied easier and more reliably, and it is now being applied to custom aftermarket jobs. “The trick to LumiLor was to turn a highly controlled process (used to make EL panels) into something a professional painter can apply with current air gun technology,” explained Zsinko. “With a little research into advanced materials, some time perfecting techniques, and appropriate amounts of serendipity, I was able to unlock the secret.” LumiLor can be applied to wood, fiberglass, plastics and insulated metal and it becomes one with the surface to which it’s applied. Think of LumiLor as a base coat, onto which you can airbrush effects, topcoat colors, dipcoat, and even chrome. The glow is achieved via simple driver electronics and the few wires needed to link the paint to a battery. It can be customized to respond to sound, to flash in sequenced or strobed patterns and it’s environmentally safe, using aqueous-based and non-toxic materials. "LumiLor is a revolutionary product that not only is used in the aftermarket world for custom painting but is also used in primary markets for safety purposes as well,” explained Pete Gonzales, LumiLor Laboratories’ Director of Production and Training. “Many products on the market are designed specifically for one substrate and one intended industry, where LumiLor is being developed and tested for all substrates in all industries.” He went on to say, “LumiLor is being introduced to the aftermarket first, any and all ‘paint’ jobs that have incorporated LumiLor into the overall design will always stand apart from any paint job in the industry today, because when the sun goes down all other paint jobs go away, but not LumiLor, that’s when we shine the most!” Darkside is currently training additional technicians so LumiLor can become more widely available and are currently looking for any and all creative ideas to showcase the technology. If you’re interested in learning more about LumiLor, go to www.LumiLor.com.
