Editorz Notez All of us at Behind Barz hope that each of you had a very blessed Christmas! We also wish you a very happy, prosperous and safe New Year!!! May your roads be curvy, the weather be fine, and the sun on your face continue to shine! As many of you know, we lost a very dear person just before Christmas. Ray Price passed away unexpectedly on 16 December in his sleep. Ray made a big impression on me several years ago. I first met him at his dealership and noticed that he was nice, made me feel at home and treated me like a part of his family. I didn’t think too much of it at the time because that’s how bikers are. Later on down the road when I was at Duke battling cancer, he and his wife Jean sent me cards and letters of encouragement. That was very special to me. I have never forgotten that. I saw him again later at a drag race, probably Rockingham. He stopped what he was doing to come over and see how I was. At the time, I was in a wheelchair. The picture below is from that day. All of us at Behind Barz would like to wish Ms. Jean and Ray’s family, his friends and everyone at Ray Price HD our deepest condolences. Ray touched so many people in the biker world and outside the biker world! We have a dedication to him on page 38 in this issue. God Speed to you Ray Price!

Wayne County Toy Run

Goldsboro, NC As always Wayne County’s response to this project was overwhelming, to say the least! Hundreds of motorcycles, truckloads of toys, and people as far as the eye could see, all in one location and for the sole purpose of making sure that every child has a present to open for Christmas!

story & photos: Tim Smith

To most people we were the large group of loud obnoxious bikers that made their Sunday afternoon commute a little more hectic from blocked intersections and an endless line of bikes, but our goal is for that stereotype to change! We want the community to see bikers who care! All the proceeds from the Wayne County Toy Run go to the Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Program, the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County, and their needy families. If you were in Goldsboro, N.C., on November 15th stuck in traffic due to a long line of motorcycles and you thought the traffic delay was unacceptable...you were wrong...a child without a present on Christmas morning is what we consider unacceptable! Lots of clubs were represented at the Toy Run; Wayne County Ghost Riders, Redliners, Guardian Brotherhood, and many others. You see the thing about days like today is that it didn’t matter what club you belonged to, if you rode a Harley-Davidson or a metric bike, or if you were on a bike or in a car. Every person was there for the greater good! We were there for a child we will probably never meet, but we all want those children to know that we care! We want our community to know that we care, and we don’t even care if they know our name. Because in the end, all we want to do is help someone!

Motor Ma Motor Maids, Inc. ~ story & photos by: Virginia Motor Maid Pamella Jewell 75 Years Young! What happens when more than 400 Motor Maids get together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this ladies-only motorcycling club? You get good times, renewed friendships, and lots of riding and exploring new roads. In 1940, when the Motor Maids was founded by Dot Robinson and Linda Dugeau, the organization’s membership was comprised of 51 ladies who owned and operated their own motorcycles. Today, membership has surpassed 1,300. The Motor Maid’s annual conventions didn’t begin with the organization’s beginnings in 1940. Four years after the organization was established, the club’s first convention took place in the spring of 1944 in Columbus, In. Since then, the Motor Maids have held an annual convention for their members and guests in destinations all over the U.S. and Canada. Because Convention is always held in a different location, many of the members take advantage of visiting new places. This year, the girls had a great time riding in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland before and after Convention. This year’s convention, marking the historic beginnings of Motor Maids in 1940, was hosted by the Atlantic Canada district and held in Moncton, British Columbia, Canada. Moncton graciously welcomed the Motor Maids with open arms, flying the Motor Maid flag at city hall during Convention. A record number of members, 422, from almost every U.S. state and Canadian province, attended the 2015 convention. Including guests (spouses, significant others, family members), total attendance reached 562.

Wrapping up the first full day’s activities was the group photo (can we say herding cats?) and the parade through Moncton. The Motor Maid Parade in full uniform, including the signature white gloves, is one of the highlights of Convention. This year’s parade was no exception. It was such a beautiful route, well executed, with loads of spectators lining the streets. Waving at bystanders and honking horns is so much fun! Wednesday morning is traditionally the Dot Robinson Road Run with the first bike out at 8:01 a.m. The “Dot Run,” as it’s called, is a timed road run, not a race. Participants are given a route sheet with distance indicators for each turn. The run is approximately 60 miles through scenic back roads, and the riders’ times are recorded at several checkpoints. The Run was followed by a B-B-Q at Toys for Big Boys Dealership. After a free afternoon, the Atlantic Canada district invited everyone to join in the fun and camaraderie of a traditional Down East Kitchen Party, with lots of singing and dancing. Needless to say, a good time was had by all! Thursday morning was spent in the Business Meeting, and everyone had a free afternoon. Some caught up on sleep from the night before, some went shopping and others went riding to see some of the sights they missed earlier. The final banquet on Thursday evening brought a close to a fun-filled week. Membership and riding awards were present at this time. Monday was registration and the perfect opportunity to greet old friends and make new ones. Some ladies took advantage of the day to explore Moncton, the Hopewell Rocks or just ride the local roads, enjoying the scenery. Scottish Bagpipers opened the Welcome Meeting on Tuesday. Neighboring Nova Scotia was settled by Scots, and so the bagpipe tradition continues. As it turns out, one of the pipers was a Canadian Motor Maid. Following the Welcome Meeting, all of the Red Ribbon attendees were treated to a luncheon. Red ribbons are those members who are first-time convention attendees. One-hundred-seventeen Motor Maids, the largest number ever, wore the special red ribbon indicating their first convention status. The district with the most Red Ribbons in attendance was Atlantic Canada, with 41 Red Ribbons.

ARZ

your Health Behind Barz

Our Survival Depends on Sodium Our bodies are dependent on small amounts of sodium to perform biological tasks. Specifically, sodium (salt) helps muscles and nerves work properly by assisting muscular contraction and transmission of nerve signals. It also helps regulate blood pressure and volume. MayoClinic.com reports having the proper amount of sodium in the body maintains an appropriate overall balance of bodily fluids. Sodium also helps sustain a regular blood pH level, an important indicator of health. Salt in small amounts is good for the body. The amount of sodium you should consume daily varies, however, based on a number of health factors. Salt can be acquired in ways other than table salt. You may get salt from sea water, fresh foods, edible roots, and fresh blood. Don’t be a zombie or vampire but people butchering their own meat can make blood sausage and there are tribes in Africa that make blood cheese. Salt is processed from salt mines, or by the evaporation of seawater (sea salt) or mineral-rich spring water in shallow pools. Of the annual production of around two hundred million tons of salt, only about 6% is used for human consumption; other uses include water conditioning processes, de-icing highways and agricultural use. Edible salt is sold in forms such as sea salt and table salt which usually contains an anti-caking agent and may be iodized to prevent iodine deficiency. Salt is used in cooking, at the table, and is present in many processed foods. Salt is an essential nutrient and the amount of salt in the diet influences health. Too much salt can raise blood pressure and may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in susceptible populations. Salt is the only mineral that people eat—the only dietary mineral that’s a real mineral. Salt is important and must be used in balance. Talk to your health care provider about your salt intake, too much or too little is not healthy. Take care of yourself; be in balance in all areas of your life, body, mind and spirit. Keep the rubber to the road and be blessed.

from the

mind of big ed When we get there to the place in Wilson, this fella comes out and we chat a bit about the goat. The kids are excited, they’re ready to see this little pygmy goat trotting along the yard. What we didn’t expect was the little goat turned out to be a big full grown Billy goat... Horns and a bucket of balls all included. The kids were tickled to death...me on the other hand, was certainly glad I drove the car. I watch the kids rub the old friendly goat, but being the a$$hole I’m known to me, I had to tell them, we drove the car.

Wyatt

Hello you Happy Riders!! When it comes to blasting down on the black top with two wheels, Hauling, comes to mind... Hauling a$$!! But hauling also means carrying something with ya. It never fails, when making a trip to some destination unknown, you always find a way to carry something back. You know, you are riding along and you see a yard sale, and sure enough they are selling an oil painting of Elvis in all his tassel glory. You got to have it, but you ain’t riding no bagger, sooo, whatcha going to do now? Well, if you’re like me, you keep rope in your saddle bag. Rope is a bikers friend. With rope you can do more then haul a$$. You can now haul other stuff, as well. Cause you never know when something might pop up. Like this one time, me and the family were caging back from Greenville. I stopped off at the store for a Yoohoo chocolate drink for me and the kids and I grabbed a trader while I was in there. My Daughter goes thumbing thru the pages and spots a pygmy goat for sale for $50.00. She says,” Daddy, can we get a goat?” I ask her why she wants a goat and well...this is a stupid question. Cause what kid doesn’t want a goat. So, we make the trip to Wilson to see this little pygmy goat. Now know, we are driving a little 4 door Honda civic. I’m hoping that us driving the car would be a great excuse to why we can’t get a goat, but with this little evil in my mind to get out of getting a goat sure blew back in my face.

Now you know the looks I’m getting. The kids are drippy noses and watering eyes and even the man who owns the goat is as sad as he can be. I told the man that I was expecting a small goat and there is no way I’m going to be able to haul this full size goat in the car. Now, when it comes to teary eyed youngin’s with sad faces, this combination will make things happen to an old man’s heart. And what this guy tells me to do next nearly knocks me out of my ragged boots. He says...just tie the goats legs up and chunk him in the boot and y’all can have the goat for free. I was like, what? You want me to tie a goat up and put him in my trunk? The guy was like sure, it won’t hurt him none. I told the fella, I can’t do that. Then I laughed. This really added fire to the kids. Now both the kids and the old man are looking at me. I thank the goat was too. A few seconds went by...FINE!!! But we ain’t putting him in the trunk! He’ll have to ride shot gun in my lap. Folks I want you to picture this and what I’m telling you is as real as the air I’m breathing. Me and the family drove from Wilson to Kinston with a goat in my lap. I ain’t making this mess up. And we stopped at a stop light and while sitting waiting for the light this young fella pulls up in a big Ol 4x4 truck and does a double take at me with the goat in my lap and the seat belt is wrapped around both of us. So, with the window down, of course...I look at the fella and say with a smile on my face, “ What? Ain’t never seen anyone ride with a goat in their lap before?” He just shakes his head, no. Point is...always be prepared to haul something while out riding cause if you ain’t got a bagger you better keep some rope in them bags you got. Haulin a$$ ain’t all the haulin’ you may be doing! Oh, before I go, one more thing...on this past November 13th, our son, Wyatt, was born. He weighed in at 8lbs and 4 oz. He is a healthy little fella! We are some very proud parents and Lord knows what adventures await us...Ha Ha Ha!! So, keep the wheels spinning and I’ll be seeing you Behind Barz.... Big Ed (2Timer)

batchelor’s Tavern 22nd annual Toy Run

5 December ~ Spring Hope, N.C. Many of us thought that this toy run would not happen this year. Batchelor’s caught on fire back in January of 2015. It stayed closed for most of the year and it looked like that was going to be the end of the Toy Run, for sure! Owner, Steve Batchelor, told us that he was going to make sure that the kids had what they needed! The Run would go on no matter what! It was a beautiful day the day of the event. There were 74 bikes in the Toy Run. Of those that came, 39 went on the ride to Ephesus Church. It took 2 pickup to haul the loads of toys to the church! $2,113.00 in cash donations was collected and it all went to the children at Tar River Baptist Assc.!!! Steve sends out a special thanks to all that helped in the toy run! We all had a great time with great food and great friends who all had big hearts!!! ...And an extra special thanks to all the bikers and non bikers alike who came out to make this another successful toy run for the local needy children!!!

RIDE FOR RAYLAN

Ride for Raylan

On October 17th 2015 bikers from Wayne and surrounding counties came together for a Ride for Raylan. Raylan’s parents reported that they noticed “a major decrease in his appetite, activity level, and a limp” and on July 23, 2015 their son was diagnosed with Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). According to the American Cancer Society, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a fast growing cancer and “In about 80% to 85% of children with ALL, the leukemia starts in B cells”. This means that the abnormal white blood cells that originate inside the bone morrow are carried throughout the body thereby spreading the disease to other organs rapidly. Not only has this family of 5 been separated for periods of time due to the father being active duty Air Force, they will also be divided while Raylan is hospitalized due to treatment. There will also be weekly visits to the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at Vidant Medical Center for chemotherapy and lab work. This little guy is taking on this 3 ½ year battle like a champ!! The benefit began at The Junction diner as riders set out for Hometown Harley Davidson in Winterville. The ride concluded at Unity Fellowship Church with raffles, food, fellowship and great live music. A big “Thanks” to everyone who came out to participate and to Sonya and Jonathan Moody, owners of The Junction, who donated $1 from every plate sold that day to the cause and to Pastor Kelvin Gurley and the many community supporters. With 40+ benefit sponsors that included Deacon Jones, Builders Discount Center and Fit 4 Life, the biker community gathered together once again to show “No 1 Fights Alone”.

Chapter Three “Uhhhh….nice to meet you to Brain.” I squeaked due to the pressure of his gentle hug. “We really need to talk.” Brain softly spoke in my ear. “In private.” “Sure.” I replied. “Can Zeke n’ Sue come along?” “Of course, Debbie should come too.” Brain suggested. So, the five of us went to the Good Tymes Club for cool drinks & a bite. The owners, Horace and Barbara greeted us warmly when we walked in. “You probably have a ton of questions don’t you?” Brain asked the three of us. We all nodded our heads and gave him a collective “Yes.” Then he began. “I’ll try to keep this short and simple.” He said. “I have several advanced degrees in physics from MIT and other schools. I’ve worked at JPL in California, and I was recruited by the CIA to do work in Area 51. The flying saucer stuff is a cover out there; the real project is time travel. That brings me to you! First off, there is more than just the ‘Event’ that brought you here to your future. The area that the power sub-station sat on was an anomaly rarely seen in nature. It had geo-magnetic properties of its own even before the explosion. As it turns out, a government owned satellite was passing over the area when the ‘Event’ occurred. I have seen video of the three of you disappearing in the expanding event horizon of the blast. There has been speculation as to whether you three were vaporized by the blast, pushed through time, or launched into another dimension. All that is known for a fact is that you disappeared. I had my own theory that you jumped into time, possibly into your future. And here you are.” Zeke looked ill and Suicide Sue started to raise her hand. Like a bad commercial on TV Brain added “But wait…..there’s more!” Here in our time Hogs have fission powered motors. Maybe you’ve noticed the bikes of this time have glowing red heads?” “Of course, but I thought they were all lit up by LEDs.” I answered. “Not by a long shot.” Brain told me. “Our bikes run on water, converted to energy by the nuclear heads. No more gasoline and accompanying pollution issues. We can convert your bikes over, so no matter where…. or when you go in time, you can easily obtain fuel! You’ll always have a thankful of time.” Using my razor-sharp intellect, I queried Brain with a dull “Howzat?” My mind was reeling. “I can barely grasp the water for fuel idea, Brain.

30

story: Bud Dunlap By the way, what is your real name?” “Brian.” He said. “That makes sense, but let’s gets back to this time thing. Are you saying we’re not stuck here?” Brain / Brian explained that since we had been moving through the blast and along with it, we and our bikes had undergone a molecular change at the sub-atomic level. I was really wishing that Professor Hawking or Neil Degrasse Tyson would magically show up to explain this stuff to me. “The bottom line is that you can travel through time, guys. But you have to go past the same area where the Event took place. By my calculations, if you go west, you’ll move into, or forward in time. When you pass the Event Area, going west at 100 MPH, you will move forward 100 years. At 100 MPH heading east, you’ll move back in time a hundred years.” Brian went on to explain that most of what we thought we might have known about time travel was untrue.

Chapter Four The five of us left the Collier HD & headed out to the Hidden Highway. Brian took the lead, I rode beside Debbie, Suicide Sue and Zeke rode beside each other. My Dyna felt somewhat ‘peppier’ after the new Red Head conversion, I wondered if Zeke & Sue noticed a difference in their bikes. In a short while we turned off the road, took a path through the woods & came upon the Hidden Highway. Brian motioned for us to shut our bikes down & walk over to him. “Look” He said, “There’s only so much I can tell you. Everything I’ve explained is just theory, much like those big brains back in your day. All that stuff about black holes, multiverses and dark matter is just stuff they made up, simply theories using mathematical models. No way to prove any of it. So basically, you’re on your own. However….there may be a guy in your present time that can help you. He used to work at Area 51 for companies like Raytheon and EG&G, if anyone can help you, the Oracle can. He rides with a veteran’s motorcycle group and goes by the road name OB. Oracle Bill I guess. I got this info from and old dossier I read about him. Give him this letter from me and maybe he’ll help you. If you make it back to your time okay, you will probably be able to come back to 2115 & see me again. I’d like you to document your trips, and give me a report. Now, accelerate to 100 MPH as you pass by the Event area & you should arrive back in 2015 close to the time you left. Good luck.”

art: Tabatha Ferrell “You cannot occupy the same time twice.” He explained. “The same way the positive ends of two magnets repel each other, you can’t go back & see your younger self, or move forward and see how you die.” If we tried, he said, we would just skip over the time period where we existed. “One last caveats my friends from the past. Big Brother is interested in you. They don’t know who you are, but they would love to treat you like new toys until they can figure out how you & your bikes move through time.” “I can see that you’re way smart Brain, but how’d you figure all this out?” I asked. Brian replied; “You know how advanced your computers are in 2015, capable of amazing things? By today’s standard, it’s like you were working with an Etch-a-Sketch!” After our bikes had been converted to Red-Heads and able to run on water, Brain took us back to the Hidden Highway so we could return to 2015. What a short strange trip it’s been.

With the mods the mechanics had made to our bikes, we shot to 120 MPH before we could say “Jeeze this thing is fast!” So we slowed down to a hundred as we passed the big circular dirt spot where the substation once stood. As before, the air started to shimmer and then Sue, who was in the lead melted into a glittery smoke then, disappeared. The last thing I saw was Zeke fading from my mirrors. Sure enough, we materialized back on the Hidden Highway just past the Event area. The sub-station was gone, and it was darker outside. We came home a little later than when we had left. I guessed that the satellite had moved out of range to record our arrival. We got out of the woods, pulled onto the main road & stopped. “Let’s head to Heidi’s Two Wheel Cafe.” I said. “I need some food, drink & down time.” I’m sure we all did!

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter Four continued... “Who would believe us if we did tell someone?” Zeke replied. I agreed with Zeke. “I don’t see what it would matter if we do talk about it. Folks will just think we’re stoned, and nobody really listens anyway. Shoot, if someone told me a story like that I’d suggest they get a nice big Valium Slurpy, go home and take a long nap.” “In the meantime,” I added “Let’s play this thing out. Suppose we really can travel through time. Where should we go? Me, I’d like to go back to 1901 and meet William Harley, Arthur Davidson & Walt Davidson. Seeing those guys start The Motor Company would be amazing!” Sue spoke next. “I wanna’ go back to 1940, meet Dot Robinson, and see her start up the Motor Maids. Dot’s always been a personal hero of mine. I’d give anything to see her race the Jackpine Enduro in 1934. She won it too, in 1940, I gotta’ see that. Dear Lord, I’m getting goosebumps!” Zeke’s eyes were wide with ideas. “No doubt about it,” he said, “I’m traveling back to early July, 1947 to see the Boozefighters tear up Hollister, CA. That’s the event that Brando’s movie The Wild One was based on. Gotta’ go there!” “Alright you guys, let’s get some rest and think about all this. Tomorrow I’m going to look up this Oracle guy, show him the letter Brain wrote, and see if he can give us any advice. Taker’ easy on your scooters, we seem to be sitting on a lot more horsepower than before. Don’t need no tickets for doing 200 in a 45 zone!” Thanks to the internet, and Facebook in particular, I was able to track down the Oracle. He didn’t live too terribly far from me, so I decided to get a good night’s sleep and look him up the next day. I dreamt of meeting the founders of America’s most iconic motorcycle, seeing some legendary women compete in off-road racing with their side hacks, and form the world’s first women’s motorcycle club. Being at Hollister, seeing the old bikes in action, the real riders live and in color, made me think that we were going to have to find some retro, period appropriate clothing and gear. Well if you think about it, black leather jackets and blue jeans have never really gone out of style in bikerworld. Adventures awaited the three of us, and I couldn’t wait to get started.

23rd annual

kennedy home ride

On November 28th 2015 the New Bern Harley Owners Group and Harley Davidson of New Bern held its 23rd Annual Ride to the Kennedy Children’s Home in Kinston. Over a thousand bikers from all over eastern North Carolina showed their generosity and caring for such a good cause and especially these days, with the state cutting funding for the home. The ride has grown over the years and so has the amount risen for the Kennedy Home. The ride started out 23 years ago with just 6 bikes now today, a wonderful site of bikes for miles going down Highway 70 west. The Kennedy Home is operated by Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (www.bchfamily.org). Baptist Children’s Homes is a nonprofit child care organization providing residential programs and services through 23 statewide locations and one international orphanage in Xela, Guatemala.

story & photos: Todd S. Doss ~ ALR Wayne Post 11

A lot of planning and help from many different sources from retailers to Law enforcement made this ride a safe and successful one. There was over $14000.00 raised to provide a great organization the funds to keep doing what they do best. Most of all it couldn’t have happened without the caring Bikers of North Carolina.

Ray Price JUNE 25, 1937 ~ DECEMBER 16, 2015

Icon, Hall of Famer and legend, Ray Price passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday evening December 16th, 2015. Ray was known for being a very caring, dedicated husband and parent. He was also known for being a very giving person! Not only did he help his fellow bikers and racers but also folks in the community. Ray Price is best known for his many successes in motorcycle drag racing with the International Hot Rod Association, and National Hot Rod Association, among others. He won 46 national racing events and set 51 national racing records! He was inducted into the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame, the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame. Ray Price was actively involved in the Ray Price Motorsports Racing Team, based in Raleigh. The team is the defending two-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Harley-Davidson Top Fuel Drag Racing Champions for 2014 and 2015. Even though Ray is known for all the racing awards and broken records listed above, he is probably more well known for his kind heart and generosity through charitable events and rides that were held at his dealership every year including the Toys for Tots run, the Ray Price Easter Basket Ride, and the Capital City Bikefest. These

38

are just a few of the events that Ray was involved in, there are so many more that benefit the local community. Ray was a native of Johnston County, N.C. He loved racing from an early age and started racing professionally in 1967. In 1982 he bought the dealership that is now Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh. It has become one of the most well known and largest dealerships in the country. In 2003 he crashed during a race and badly injured his left arm. Doctors wanted to amputate but he said no to that. Everyone who ever met Ray remember that he was a humble, compation ate person. On Sunday, Dec. 20th, Price got what friends saw as a fitting sendoff, with his daughter riding his motorcycle. An escort with thousands of bikers from across the state and country escorted Price to a funeral service at the Red Hat Amphitheater that honored his service, his passion, and the personality that made Price so special. He is survived by his wife Jean, his daughter Robin, and his grandchildren Rebecca and Jordan. He was 78 years old. The memorial was a celebration of his life, as his wife, Jean, said he would have wanted it!

Freeing Her Soul Criteria She drops her children off at school Just an average mom, she always follows the rules. Back at the house the chores are all done. The sun was shining; it was time for some fun. Grabbed the key to the bike then pulled back her hair. Heart beat racing as she said a prayer. Out of the garage and down the road she went. Never Judge A B Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find that bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do!

EVE

Bad Boy Redemption Steven Shirey, aka Big Steve, came from a broken home, one torn apart by an abusive, alcoholic Father. He was 9 the last time he saw his Dad, his last memory of his Dad shoving him out of his truck because Steven wouldn’t choose to live with him permanently. Big Steve’s Mom and Stepdad did their best at raising him, but Steven was an angry child, one filled with hate and I don’t cares, the only thing that mattered was himself. He stayed in trouble throughout school, running the streets, fighting, drinking and taking drugs. Somehow he managed to finish high school, even made the honor roll a couple of times. Big Steve joined the Army his senior year, hoping to make something of himself and try to deal with his anger. He had always been told he would never amount to anything. The Army only taught him how to channel his anger and made him into a fighting machine. In 1996, Big Steve married his High school sweetheart and after returning home from the Army, he became an OTR truck driver. His partying ways continued even after his marriage. Even after suffering a heart attack at age 24, he still didn’t change his partying ways. He did finally quit drugs at age 26, but the drinking continued. After 12 years of marriage, he and his wife had a beautiful daughter named, Islynd. He says this was Gods way of telling him it was time to grow up, so in 2010 he gave up the drinking because he didn’t want his daughter to have to go through what he had. Besides his wife, Steven had only one friend that had stuck by him through all the years of raising hell and partying. In May 2012, he got a call that this friend had been in a motorcycle accident and wasn’t expected to live. This friend had always tried to get Big Steve to go to church but was never able to talk him into it. While visiting his friend in the hospital, he made a promise to his friend that he would meet him in church on Sunday if he would just get well and make it home. On that Thursday, the phone rang, and reluctant to answer it for fear of bad news, he picked up the phone and said hello! On the other end was his friend asking Big Steve what he was going to do on Sunday? In awe, he told him he would be meeting him in church. That Sunday, Big Steve kept that promise and attended church. Since then Big Steve has continued to attend church, attended A Walk to Emmaus and gotten saved. He says his life has changed forever. Says he is now on a natural high. His life today consists of being an active member in Kairos, a prison ministry and spreading the word everywhere he goes. He says “As you can see, I’m bald headed, bearded, tattooed, muscular and ride a Harley. Most people stereotype me as a “Bad Boy,” but out of my mouth and heart will always come the words of Gospel.” I say this “Bad Boy” has finally found his road to REDEMPTION…..

poem by Nash County resident, Adam Richardson March 9, 2015 I love you more than days of bliss, on a timeless beach of breezes, subtle, the lofty clouds big cotton bubbles, in baby-blue skies sunray-alit! I love you more than twilight paint, deepening bright paech skies curtailed, as the moon has yet to soon unveil, a glow that pulls its worthy rank!

I love you more than the joy I behold, as something sacred and dear to me! Forevermore, I’ll adhere to thee: my broad worth billions of bays of gold! Bucket List - 30 states! Kristine Hill just scratched some thingsoff of her “Bucket List” and she did it in a big way...all alone. Not many people will ride their motorcycle to 30 different states, even less people will ride to thirty states in just a few days, probably only a handfull will do that thirty state ride all alone. Entires below are in her own words, as they happened. She posted them for friends and family to know she was doing well and where she was along her travels. State number one was Ohio on my cross country tour. On 9/16/2015 I loaded all the things I needed onto the Silver Rhino (my bike) for the epic 30 state ride I had planned. Sept 17 In Vermont for the night after making it out of Ohio, through Pennsylvania and all of New York! Somewhere along the way I lost a foot peg...go figure! But the guys at Buffalo Harley helped me out and put a new set on! It was getting dark and I was sooooo close to Vermont and wanted to make it, so I pulled over to throw on a sweatshirt. I had no idea where I was but got lucky that where I pulled over there was a group of older bikers who offered to ride the rest of the way into Vermont with me since it was dark out and find my motel! I have been so blessed so far and it’s only the first full day on the road!! Sept 18 Left Vermont this morning and rode through the BEAUTIFUL mountains (don’t worry Bruce, I didn’t leave without some maple syrup!) Passed through the same gorgeous scenery in New Hampshire. Stopped in Maine for FRESH lobster, dipped my toes in the Atlantic, saw girls selling fresh lobster at a stand, took a pic of an old cemetery (it made me think of how my momma described New England on her trip), made it through Massachusetts, Rhode Island and now I am in Connecticut! 1,142 miles so far! Sept 19 Another day of riding in the books!! I made it out of Connecticut, through Rhode Island, had TERRIBLE traffic through NYC (I hit a pot hole coming out of a construction zone so

44

hard I thought I was going to blow my front tire! Then had a HUGE plastic paint tarp in my lane with no where to go but through it fortunately it only wrapped itself around my foot peg and I could kick it loose- heart stopper! And a traffic back up so hot and long I thought my engine was going to seize up on me, thanks to lane splitting I made it out! God was certainly watching over me)! Amazing views over the George Washington Bridge and the Delaware Memorial! Rode through New Jersey, Delaware and now in Baltimore, Maryland! 1,500 miles so far- that’s about 1/3 of the journey! Capping the evening off with Maryland crab and crab cakes!! Sept 20 Today was just shy of 500 miles for the day and 2,000 miles total! I passed through Baltimore and Washington, D.C. all the way down to Colonial HD outside of Richmond, met up with a friend and rode the back rides through Virginia into North Carolina. Takes a little longer to pass through these big states but I have met the most amazing people, have been blessed to see the most gorgeous scenery and sunsets God has created and have had a bikers dream weather the entire way (only 10 minutes of sprinkles)! Sept 21 What a great day!!! I left from Charlotte, North Carolina and made my way all the way through South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and I’m in Florida!! Georgia was all back county roads, dodged the massive storms that were hovering over Atlanta and moving in on me the sky looked treacherous, but thanks to some savvy map reading and radar I missed ALL of the rain and didn’t feel a single drop! I saw a cute little goat farm, cotton fields and GORGEOUS skies. Another great day on the road- just under 550 miles for the day and 2,500 miles total!!! Sept 22 Left Florida this morning - but not before stopping in Pensacola to dip my toes in the Gulf (another bucket list item for this year- toes in the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacificjust one to go!!) and got lucky enough to watch the Blue Angels practicing! Rode back through Alabama to Mississippi (finally had my beloved Waffle House!!!) and then on to Louisiana. Coming through the bayou was incredible,

Continued from page 44 the I-10 into Mobile is like being on a roller coaster above the water for miles and then dipping down into a tunnel! Once I made it to New Orleans I stopped to get a tattoo the Harley bar and shield with the number 30 in it to commemorate the 30 state ride and 30 in 30 bucket list!! Wandered Bourbon Street and had gator bites and char-grilled oysters! Only 330 miles today, but it was a busy day! Sept 23 Another day done! Left NOLA late this morning and headed north alllllllll the way through Mississippi...their states name is as long as the ride through! Northern Mississippi has a lot more in the way of scenery that southern. Passed through Memphis, Tennessee and stopped at Graceland Harley. Then on to Arkansas, which now gives a whole new meaning to the Dixie Chicks song “Wide Open Spaces” where you can see for miles and are able watch the sun set for an hour! Less eventful day but certainly more miles- 475 miles and 3,3331 total. Sept 24 I’m in Missouri!!! I had no idea how beautiful it is out here! So much to see through the Ozarks- the pastures, the cattle and bison grazing, wide open, big, gorgeous skies...amazing!! Met some sweet old man who chatted with me for quite awhile and gave me a match book from an Illinois Harley dealer. Pulled into the hotel in Kansas City at the EXACT same moment as my dad and sister- never felt so good to be reunited and see my little man Blake! Just enough time to change and head to rehearsal dinner for my sweet cousin Allie’s big day tomorrow (and have some WONDERFUL Kansas City BBQ)!! That makes 23 states and 3,700 miles! Sept 25 Quick 350 mile ride today up to Iowa, Nebraska and into Kansas...then back into the Missouri side of Kansas City for the wedding! That makes 26 states so far (caught about 15 minutes of drizzle inbetween two storms as I headed north but it was sunshine the whole way back). Allie and Nate’s wedding was beautiful and it was an honor to see such an amazing couple be joined as one! Time to dance the night away and then another day of riding is ahead of me!! 4,000 miles of beautiful America! Sept 26 Another gorgeous day on the road is in the books, and I am just outside of Chicago! 571 miles through Missouri, Iowa, into Wisconsin and Illinois! I knew Iowa had a lot of corn but I had no idea how pretty it actually was! Iowa had about able pavilions with quotes from their famous writers at a rest area...and cute little piggies in a trailer. My favorite might be the buggy parking! The scenic overlooks in northern Illinois showed all the rolling hills! It truly is amazing how different this country isthe people, the landscape...America the Beautiful!!

Continued from page 46 Sept. 27th It is finished!!! I have completed my 30 state ride by making it through Indiana and back into the good ol’ Mitten state of Michigan!! This road trip has been amazing-from riding through the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, eating lobster in Maine, crab in Maryland, riding the twists and turns and hills of southern Virginia, passing through the back roads of Georgia, riding through the bayou, so many HUGE bridges that I wasn’t sure if they had another side (thank goodness for practice on the Big Mac a couple of years ago), spending a night in the French Quarter in NOLA-eating gator and oysters, celebrating my cousins wedding and seeing America! Exactly 5,000 miles when I pulled in my driveway - that’s how you do a bucket list vacation! 1 new tattoo 2 new footpegs 12 days on the road 30 states 1) Ohio 2) Pennsylvania 3) New York 4) Vermont 5) New Hampshire 6) Maine 7) Massachusetts 8) Connecticut 9) Rhode Island 10) New Jersey 11) Delaware 12) Maryland 13) Virginia 14) North Carolina 15) South Carolina 16) Georgia 17) Alabama 18) Florida 19) Mississippi 20) Louisiana 21) Tennessee 22) Arkansas 23) Missouri 24) Iowa 25) Nebraska 26) Kansas 27) Wisconsin 28) Illinois 29) Indiana 30) MICHIGAN (if you feel cheated by my home state counting- I still plan on riding in California later this fall!) COUNTLESS “big” cities have been undertaken and mastered. 5,000 HUGE miles 30,000 bugs on my bike...time to wash the Silver Rhino
