Editorz Notez Thanks to everyone for your continued support. It is not easy putting a magazine together and I could not do it without the help of my friends and family. The BB Crew gives up a lot of their time to make the magazine happen... and that is on top of their full time jobs, family duties, church and

other obligations! They still find time to attend events, take pictures, write stories, and keep me in check! The BB Crew is an awesome group! Thanks, also, to all of our readers for keeping the suggestions coming in, as well as, the stories, photos, poems, etc. Of course, none of this would be possible without our advertisers. We could not do Behind Barz without you! It takes a village, as they say. Without our biker family, readers and advertisers, we wouldn’t be. So, “Thank you!” Please check out the Eventz section for upcoming rides and eventz in the area. Please let us know if you have an event or ride coming up. God Bless each of you!

See you out on the road! Doobie

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar. Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Chaplains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page.

Look at those smiling faces!!!

We need the name, address, approximate number of troops who will be served by this point of contact, and the approximate date of stopmail (we will send repeat packages). We also would like to know if there are females at that location who would like to receive girlie girl packages. Special requests can be sent also. We follow security guidelines and never distribute names and addresses to the public. Our donors and volunteers enjoy hearing back from our troops so notes and photos are very welcome! We appreciate your service and are glad that we can provide you with a touch and taste of home. Homework Assignment for Volunteers and Donors: Gather up your church groups, bike clubs, youth organizations, etc. and make it a joint effort! While you are out shopping, look for Little Debbie Snacks and other kinds of snack cakes, cookies, and crackers. Throw a few extra in your shopping cart. When the kiddos get bored or it is a rainy day, break out the craft supplies and make cards, wall hangings, and artwork that can be sent to our heroes.

We, at Behind Barz Mag, always print a few extra copies of each issue to send to our soldiers. “Thank you” to the gals who unloaded my truck the day I delivered the magazine to NCPACKS4PATRIOTS.

6

We love the originality and creativity of students in making cards for our soldiers.

Troops sure do love getting care packages with the little things from home that they can’t get in the field!

Sending out a big thank you to Becky Brown for compiling our data! For the first 3 months of 2018 ( Jan, Feb and March ) we packed and mailed 312 care packages at a total cost of $5114.05. We also compiled the number of troops served so far in 2018 by items picked up at our center. We knew we had been super busy, but had no idea of just how busy. We can not do this alone, so a huge thank you goes to Hallmark, Archway Cookies, Hornets Nest, Girl Scout Council, Girl Scouts Carolinas, Peaks to Piedmont Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines SupportOurTroops.Org Michael E Belk Grifton Mission Ministries Accucopy, the US Postal Service of Ayden, and the many many individuals, churches, schools, and veterans groups who donate items, money for postage, and volunteer time. It takes the entire team working together to say thank you to those who serve our country. Now for those figures: January 6,710 troops February 3,115 troops March 11,309 troops April 5 4,397 troops ( that is today only) A big thank you goes to those FRG leaders, FRSAs, FROs, Ombudsmen, and military members who go above and beyond normal duties to pickup items, track items, store items, distribute items, mail items in support.Thank you all for your support of our mission, but most of all, thank you to those who serve in the military missions of our country. ~ Barbara Please email or call us for more info. Thank you very much for your continued support!

1500 MILES Iron Butt Ride

David Hollingsworth, Rick Graham, Brian Woodruff, Henry Graham, Glenn Plummer, Randy Heath, and Phillip Brantley. story & photos Phillip Brantley Myself and Randy (my next door neighbor), left Friday, April 5th, a few minutes before midnight. We got our first tank of gas at Percy Flowers store in Clayton, NC. Glenn Plummer and his neighbor, Brian Woodruff, filled up in Kenly. Henry Graham, his brother, Rick Graham, and David Hollingsworth met in Dudley and filled up. Then we met up in Dunn, N.C., at the Triangle Waffle to start our journey. We headed south on 95 to Florence, S.C. and picked up Highway 20 to Atlanta, Ga. We continued on down to Montgomery, Alabama and stopped at Harley Davidson of Montgomery Inc. From there, we continued south thru Brantley, Mississippi, Florada, Mississippi and into north west Florida where some of us ditched our helmets and enjoyed the Florida sunshine on some really nice 2 lane roads. We continued south to Emerald Coast Harley-Davidson. They were some of the nicest people! We told them what we were doing and asked them to take our picture for us. Then they gave us poker chips from their dealership...that is the only time an HD dealer has giving me anything. After a brief stay, because we were running behind on time, we decided to head back north to Highway 10 to avoid 5 o’clock traffic thru town and headed east to Jacksonville Florida. We stopped and got a bite to eat at a Love’s truck stop about dark, and filled up with a fresh tank of fuel and continued east . A little after 11:00 pm and after 23 hours on the road and over 1000 miles, one of the riders fell asleep and swerved in front of a bob tail rig hauling ass down the road! Luckily, he did not get hit . We had gotten separated and stretched out because of traffic and me and Randy had already passed the exit when they pulled off. We went up to next exit which was about 6 miles up the road.

8

We stopped and texted them but got no response at that time so, we waited about 5 minutes and then decided to continue east towards Jacksonville. We figured they had stopped and got back on the road and would answer us when they stopped again. At midnight we stopped and filled up to get receipt to show we had completed the Saddle Sore 1000 in 24 hours and got the news of what had happened to split us up. Glenn and Brian had continued and were about 45 minutes behind us. Randy and myself checked the radar and confirmed with our wives at home that rain was on the way so, we decided to continue and get as far as we could to avoid a long day riding in the rain on Saturday to complete our trip. We rode all night and stopped in Florence, S.C., around 6 am, after riding for 30 hours. We got a room to wait out the rain that was in front of us. I was really tired by then and did not feel safe to continue without some rest. I felt as if I was pushing my luck and wanted to live to tell the story and ride another day. We got up at 10 am, put on our rain gear, and headed north once again. We didn’t hit rain until we were almost to Lumberton, N.C. We stopped at 12:00, noon just south of Benson at another Loves truck stop for our final gas receipt with a total of 1,530.8 miles in 36 hours to complete Iron Butt Association Bun Burner 1500. Glenn Plummer and Brian Woodruff rode thru the night and completed there ride at 8:30 am. Henry, Rick and David continued Saturday until a tire blew out and left them stranded.

Your Health Behind Barz Deborah Alston, RN

Legggs! Yes, it’s true, nothing beats a great pair of legs so we need to take care of them. In human anatomy, the lower leg is the part of the lower limb that lies between the knee and the ankle. The thigh is between the hip and knee, the upper leg and makes up the rest of the lower limb. The term lower limb or “lower extremity” is commonly used to describe all of the leg. The major bones of the leg are the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and adjacent fibula, and these are all known as long bones. The patella (kneecap) is the sesamoid bone in front of the knee. Here are a few simple tips found in reading that are aids to help keep your legs looking great: • Run, walk or jog for 20 to 30 minutes a day. These weight-bearing exercises help build bone and muscle strength. • Eat a healthy diet and maintain your ideal body weight.

If you have any questions talk to your doctor or nutritionist about what to take, or even not take for your health. If your legs cramp often, swell, bruise easy, just do not feel right, please go see your doctor and let them look at your sexy legs. Our legs are important as they take us places, help us hold up our bikes, look sexy for the old man, and are nice to put on the ottoman after a hard day’s ride or work. Ride safe, be kind to others, walk the narrow road with your head held high. Be blessed and not stressed!

• Take your vitamins. Getting adequate dietary or supplemental calcium and vitamin D is critical when it comes to bone strength used under a doctor’s direction. • Leave the stilettos in the closet. High heels can cause knee problems and disabling injuries. Make sure your boots and shoes fit you and have a good arch support. • Avoid daily use of heels over two inches in height. Also, don’t wear shoes that are too tight. • Take walking breaks throughout the day. If you have to stand or sit for extended periods at work, take a 5 to 10 minutes’ walk two to three times or day or move your legs around your desk. This will aid in circulation.

Brad Whitfield Remembered Through CCCC Foundation

“Brad Whitfield was naturally talented when it came to motorcycles. He was a leader,” said Stan Thompson, CCCC Lead Motorcycle Mechanics Instructor. Wayne Graham, who was one of Brad’s Motorcycle Mechanics teachers at CCCC, said, “I taught Brad in the Motorcycle Mechanics program. Brad was an outstanding student and a great young man. He was quiet, hard working — one of the best students I ever had in over 30 years. He improved to the level of Master Tech while working at Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh. I am glad I had the opportunity to teach Brad. I will miss him.” On Aug. 20, 2016, he married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Bailey. She was the love of his life. They lived in Sanford with their dogs — Macy, Sadie, and Nacho. He and Bailey adored their dogs and life together. Brad could often be found at the horse barn helping Bailey with her business. He was a loving husband, son, and friend.

SANFORD — Bradley Keith Whitfield distinguished himself as a student at Central Carolina Community College, graduating from the college’s Motorcycle Mechanics program. Whitfield, 26, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 20, following a single motor vehicle accident. His parents, Keith and Rhonda Whitfield of Apex, are establishing a scholarship in his memory at his alma mater through the CCCC Foundation. Brad Whitfield was born on Feb. 17, 1992, in Durham. He was a graduate of Northwood High School in Pittsboro in 2010. Besides his time as a student at CCCC, he attended additional training with Harley-Davidson at schools in Wisconsin, Florida, and Massachusetts, and achieved Master Mechanic Recognition on Feb. 2, 2017. After graduation from CCCC, he worked at Shelton HarleyDavidson of Durham. From there, he was hired at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson (formerly Ray Price Harley-Davidson). He also served on the building team, winning many ingenuity awards and awards for his building skills. He was a talented and respected technician in the H-D world.

14

Brad was a hard worker and had a passion like no other. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, dirt bikes, and 4-wheelers with his buddies. He liked fishing at the coast with his dad and boating with his parents. Brad had an infectious smile and a witty since of humor. Brad is survived by his wife, Bailey Bennett Whitfield of Sanford; parents, Keith and Rhonda Whitfield of Apex; grandparents, Wade and Minerva Whitfield of Pittsboro; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Brad was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ann Beckwith Goodwin. “Brad Whitfield was a proud graduate of the Central Carolina Community College Motorcycle Mechanics program. Brad’s parents, Keith and Rhonda Whitfield, are establishing a scholarship in his memory that will help to improve the lives of future CCCC students,” said Dr. Emily Hare, CCCC Foundation Executive Director. “Our college family mourns the loss of Brad, but our fond memories of him will remain in our hearts and will live on through this scholarship in his honor.” Anyone who wishes to contribute to the Brad Whitfield scholarship fund can mail a check to the CCCC Foundation, 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, N.C. 27330 with Brad Whitfield scholarship in the memo line, call Dr. Hare at 919-718-7230 to make a donation over the phone, or visit the CCCC Foundation website at www. cccc.edu/foundation to make a PayPal gift.

PAWNC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded for the purpose of reducing euthanasia rates of unwanted dogs and cats in North Carolina, primarily focusing on Nash County Animal Shelter in Nashville, NC. PAWNC was formed to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and provide spay/neuter assistance to our community. We offer free spay/neuter services for any animal adopted from Nash County Animal Shelter. Due to the fact that Nash County Animal Shelter does not have a fund to assist injured or sick animals that are brought in, our Emergency Medical Fund provides

Col Edgar Felton Davis Returned home

Nearly 50 years after he went missing when his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War, Air Force Col. Edgar Felton Davis returned to North Carolina on Thursday, April 5th, to be buried next to his wife. His remains arrived to a hero's welcome at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on an American Airlines flight from Dallas. Water cannons from two RDU fire trucks arched over the plane as it pulled up to the gate, where a six-member honor guard from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base waited. About 130 motorcycles, members of the N.C. Patriot Guard Riders, escorted the hearse to Goldsboro, where Davis was buried Friday with full military honors at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, under the flight path for the Air Force base. Martha Sue Davis did not live long enough to welcome her husband home, but their three children were there, among about 20 family members who stood in the shadow of the Airbus jet's wing while his flag-covered coffin emerged from the cargo hold. ~Richard Stradling

Col. Edgar Felton Davis

The Pollen was Heavy Today The pollen was heavy in my eyes today as I rode with the Patriot Guard in Honor of MIA, Col. Edgar Felton Davis who has been missing for 50 years. We escorted him home today. We rode from RDU to Goldsboro using 540, 264/64, to 495 to Goldsboro. The pollen was heavy at every overpass when I saw fire trucks displaying an American flag and the firemen standing tall, saluting as we rode underneath. The pollen was heavy at every on ramp blocked by the local Sheriff, Town, City, or State Highway Patrol. All standing at attention, with their hand at the brim of their hat. Looking so sharp, yes, the pollen was heavy. As we got closer to Goldsboro, the pollen was getting heaver, people started to line up along highway 495, standing, waving, holding American Flags, and several POW/MIA flags. Col Davis was Missing In Action, but now he is home. Pulling onto Wayne Memorial Boulevard the pollen was the thickest. The entire road was full of people standing, holding flags, kids saluting, old veterans standing smartly, holding a salute until the entire Honor Guard of 150 motorcycle passed. They were standing so tall and proud. Yes, the pollen was heavy when we passed them. Then the lady holding the Welcome Home sign for Col. Davis. It was hard to see from the pollen. Yes, he is home. The 2 fire trucks with their ladders joined by a flag over the center of the road. We had to ride under it to get to the funeral home. I think the pollen was falling on to us as we rode under it. Yes, the pollen was so thick It made my eyes water, but I pressed on. Like a veteran does when asked to support one of his fallen. They Stood for Us, We will stand for them. I am a Patriot Guard Rider and will continue to stand for others when asked. No matter how thick the pollen is, I will be there. ~Dave Parker

Today 50 plus Patriots , 42 motorcycles for escort under the leadership of ADRC Jerry Snyder and RC Randy Bright stood in Honor and brought Col. Edgar Felton Davis to his final duty station at East Carolina Veteran Cemetery in Goldsboro under the flight zone of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. A Tribute paid by 165 Air Force personnel, a 21 gun salute, taps, and a missing man fly by. An Honor for a Hero and his family. Special Thanks to Wayne County Sheriff's department, Fire Dept., ROTC, Boy Scouts and the Community for their support and Love of this Air Force Hero and family. Humbled to be there. Honor, Dignity and Respect. ~Charles Bullock, Sr. photos courtesy Cjarles Bullock, Sr.

Birds, Brews,

17 March 18 was Sylvan Heights Bird Park’s Birds, Brews & BBQ! What a combination! This was the first year that they combined the Birds & Brews with the BBQ event and it was a hug success!

They also had the various local brews on hand! ...all you could taste. What a super event! All the proceeds from Birds, Brews & BBQ support the education and conservation programs at Sylvan Heights Bird Park.

The weather cooperated and gave us a supurb North Carolina evening for the event! Local and regional cooks competed in the BBQ cook-off. With our ticket to the event we were able to visit the birds in the park and sample any or all of the competitors BBQ. Many of them had their own fixins to go with it...slaw, hush puppies, mac n cheese, and brunswick stew. Then there was the huge selection of desserts! Did I mention that it was all you could or wanted to eat!?!

There was a pie eating contest, St. Patrick’s Day costume contest and live DJ. Sylvan Heights Bird Park is home to the world’s largest and most biologically significant collection of waterfowl, along with many other bird species. The Park also provides a natural wetlands habitat for local wildlife.

from the

mind of big ed I’m so gald I have thses pictures. I’m thankful someone took the time to realize how blessed we are and snapped that photo. To look back and see that smile on our faces. That time when we embraced our friendship and held those beers up high. I hold these pictures close because it will never happen again, but I am grateful to have them.

Big Ed aka 2Timer

Some folks shy away from pictures for what ever reason, but not me. ‘Cause I know we are on this big blue ball for a short time and I want people to look back and see that even with all the hardships in this world, through all the pain, the hard times, that there’s moments when life was really good and we snapped that photo to remember a bond, a place in time, and we have that photo to always look back and remember and smile and be thankful for yesterday.

Hello all you happy people!!! Man, I love looking back at all the pictures I’ve taken over the years. The rides, the smiles, the funny faces, the high flying middle fingers and the love y’all. I look back and I see friends and family. People I care a lot about and some that came to the end of the road and decided it was time for them to take a different path. I got these pictures and I see the good times. The gallons of beer that we all drank. The rebel yells we hollered out. The “ I LOVE YOU MAN!!” when we were feeling that good buzz. Time moves on, but these picture lock in place a time when life was going our way. Pictures of countless miles and endless horizons.

lets get out there on that black top and feel the wind and make another moment Behind Barz to snap shot another fine memory. P.S. In the recent weeks Ive had some good friends and some brothers in some bike wrecks. Please take a moment and say a prayer for them. I would really appreciate it. be safe out there...... Your Bro,Big Ed (2Timer)

One day, my kids will go through these pictures and I wonder what they will think of me. Will they see their Daddy and say “ man, Dad was crazy as a sh*t house rat.” or “Man!,Dad sure knew how to have a good time.” I know when I look back and I see some of the best times I’ve had in my life I also get to see the old pictures of a once, then, new bike. A bike that is 20 years old now! I also love the pictures of the wild add ons, like a four foot sissybar, a stinking yellow gas tank or six foot pegs. You got to dig the way too high ape hangers or the way too loud fish tail pipes! It’s these things that made the bikes stamped forever in your brain. Like seeing a Goldwing with enough lights added on to it that it looks like a the runway at an airport. I also look back and see the friends and family that are no longer here with us. It’s a bitter sweet feeling inside my heart to be able to see their faces on these special pictures. To see a time when we all shared that moment together that can never again be replaced. A time when we were on top of the world, if only for a moment.

~ Read It…Ride It…Live It ~ By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys.

“My closest friends call me Wolf.” ********************************************************* Welcome to the world of Wayne Littrell. Biker. Novelist. Safety advocate. Wayne has published two novels, The Lone Wolf Murders and Lone Wolf Rides, thrillers that center on a biker named John ‘Wolf’ Trotter. Yes, the books have all manner of excitement—mystery, murder, and mayhem. But for bikers, the best part are the wild rides through the back roads of North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. “The locations come first,” Littrell says. “I love to explore back country roads. I use various GPS settings to take me places I might not see otherwise. Then I ask, ‘What if…?’ That’s how the stories happen.” If you want to imagine riding down Alligator Alley in Florida, or find overlooked curvy roads near Rider’s Roost in North Carolina, Wayne Littrell can take you there. His descriptions are so vivid that some riding clubs have recreated portions of Wolf’s journeys. Maps are in his books. But Wayne’s strongest motivation as a writer is safety. While he has never had a motorcycle accident himself in 35 years and more than 400k miles of riding, he knows that disaster can happen in a blink, typically when everything seems to be going well. He was one of 600 bikers on a toy run when a freak accident led to a biker’s death, and he has been first at the scene of several motorcycle accidents. Those incidents helped harden his focus on safety and defensive riding. And he brings his message to his readers by beginning each chapter in Lone Wolf’s Run with a safety tip, then uses the tip during the action that follows. As Wayne says, “If my writing can save a life or prevent an accident, I’ve accomplished my primary goal.”

34

Mission accomplished. One of Wayne Littrell’s readers reported a potentially deadly accident was prevented after reading this safety tip in Chapter 1: Assume you’re invisible to others—even when stopped. Be prepared with an escape plan. The reader was on a pleasure ride when he passed a woman in a Mercedes who was texting while driving. He pulled ahead to get away from her (as per the tip for Chapter 28: Watch for signs of distracted drivers and put distance between you and them). Minutes later, the biker stopped at a traffic light, and mentally tagged the turn lane as his “escape plan. ” Watching his mirror, he saw the Mercedes was not braking behind him and approaching way too fast to stop in time. The biker reacted and used his escape route…and not a second too soon. The Mercedes skidded to a stop within inches of the car he had been behind. Without the escape plan, the biker would have been sandwiched between the two cages. The safety tips are a natural fit for a biker novel. And you can’t hear them enough. As Wayne likes to say, “We do what we think and practice.” The safety information seems to have better mind-traction due to the way they are incorporated into the novels. If you want to check out Wayne Littrell’s novels, they are available from all major online shops, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon, or you can order direct (and get a signed edition) from www.WayneLittrell.com.

Ride Safe!

FLAMES A Novel by Wayne Littrell. You have got to read this book! Wayne was inspired by the folks he has met on his journeys around this country on his bike. He weaves them into this novel, “Flames”, seemlessly, along with places he has been to and experiences he has had. They are not included by their real names but by their personalities and lasting impressions they have made upon him. If you are one of those people, that is truly special! Wayne not only has a very captivating story in “Flames” but he also includes defensive and common-sense riding tips in this book, as well as, a map and directory. This book is a great read and very hard to put down! Through Wayne’s words you feel as if you are right there within the story with Sam Forest. Living in the moment with Sam while he is on the run, seeking refuge, running up on outlaw bikers, corrupt lawmen, moonshiners, pot growers and ruthless killers...all the while falling in love with Betsy! You will be glues to the pages! A must read for all bikers! I thouroughly enjoyed from the beginning to the very end! ~Doobie Check out Wayne’s Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/Wayne.Littrell.Wolf or go to his website at: www.WayneLittrell.com

Wayne will be at Black Cat HD in Rocky Mount, N.C., on 8 June for their Bike Night! Wayne is from North Carolina and attended Rocky Mount Sr. High School Come out and get a signed copy of, “Flames” and then went on to NC State University. He is a freelance writer and writes for several publications. See the f acing page for more info on and meet the author, Wayne Littrell. Country Stores Sykes Groc. Westry Crossing Circa 1968.

Country stores have long been a mainstay in America but they are a dying breed...and they are dying fast! I grew up in a country store. My granddaddy owned one before I was born (at Westry Crossing) and my dad owned one until I was in high school (at Taylor’s Cross Roads). Both in Nash County, N.C. It helped mold me into who I am today! Every day, after school, my mom would take my brother and me to the store to work. Every weekend we did the same thing. We spent a lot of time at Sykes Groc. We all had jobs or chores that we did. One of mine was to pump gas for customers when they pulled up to one of our two gas pumps. Their choices, “High Test” or “Regular”. It was commonplace to hear someone say, “Give me a dollar worth o’ gas.” And so I would pump their gas, sometimes three or four times a day for the same car. It might be a load of people in that car but they would only spend a DOLLAR at a time! I had to fill the drink coolers every day with bottled drinks. Back then the coolers were waste high and the drinks laid in them flat on top of each other. The bottles were made of glass and you had to reach way down into the drink box to get one. This made the drinks very cold! On the front of each drink box was a nifty device where you opened your drink by inserting the top of the bottle and pushed down... wah-la!. The crates the drinks came in were made of wood with the drink companies name painted on them. People returned their empty drink bottles back in to us for money and we turned them back in to the drink companies. So, I had to sort the empty bottles in the corresponding drink crates. The drink companies (Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Sun Drop) would come pick up the empty bottles when they delivered the filled bottles. They must have had pretty big muscles back then because those crates with full and empty bottles were heavy! That was true recycling! The bottles were picked up, cleaned, re-filled, and re-distributed. No waste, no litter, no problem. Plastics, on the other hand, are going to be with us forever!

36

I also had to mark and put up stock. We didn’t have scanners because back then there were no bar codes. You hand wrote the price or you used a marking gun that spit out a little sticker with the price. Items had to be fronted and the shelves dusted. Everything was rung up by hand on a cash register. The one we had didn’t even tell you the amount of change to give. It made all kinds of dings and you had to pull the handle down on it when you finished for the drawer to open. My dad let customers buy items during the week by putting them on a “tab” and then pay for them at the end of the month. There were no ATMs, no Paypal, and no chip read credit cards. My dad trusted that all those people would come back and pay. Most of the time they did. You can’t do that nowadays. At the front counter we had penny candy. You know, Mary Jane’s, Fireballs, BB Bats, and many others. Behind the counter we had BC Powders, ladies hair nets and cigarettes. Most popular cigarettes were Kool, Marlboro and Winston. Some people smoked Pall Mall (pronounced Pell Mell). Back then they were about a buck a pack, no filters and everybody carried them in their front chest pocket (if they didn’t roll them up in their shirt sleeve). Our store had all the staples there; milk, bread, eggs, etc. but we also carried general merchandise, some hardware items, and all the essential grocery items one may need. We carried local favorites; hoop cheese and souse (essentially pickled pig or calf head). One entire drink box top was covered in huge jars of pickled pigs feet, pickled eggs and sour or dill pickles. They didn’t come in pre-packaged plastic. You used tongs to dig the one you wanted out of the jar! They tasted better back then, too! Yes, we sold and ate a lot of things pickled. We also sold beer and wine. The most popular beers were Bud and Colt 45. The favored wine was Richard’s Wild Irish Rose. It was a fun place to be. We met a lot of great people! Folks would come, dig an ice cold drink out the drink cooler, grab a pack of nabs or peanuts, sit on a drink crate and chat for a while. Maybe even smoke a cigarette or two while they rested and stomp it out on the floor when they were through with it. Yep, those were the good ol’ days. Sometimes I wish I could go back to those days and work in my dad’s store or maybe just sit for a spell on a drink crate with an ice cold bottle of Sun Drop! We want to feature a country store in every issue. If you know of any, please, drop us a line or text to let us know where. There are still a few out there operating as they once did and we would love to visit them!

great destinations in their own right Washburn General Store ~ By Wally Wersching Everyone has heard of the Mast General Store. There are different locations all over the southeast. The original one is in Valle Crucis, NC. It was built in the late 1800’s but was closed for a while in late 1970 when the ownership changed hands. The building needs a renovation because the floors are slanted. The Washburn General Store near Bostic, NC has been open since 1831, and is recognized as the oldest continually run; family owned and operated business in North Carolina. Last Thursday, I decided to take a ride in the afternoon to buy a Fudgsicle at the old store. It’s a great place to stop when out on a ride. It’s not hard to find. It’s on Bostic-Sunshine Highway but I took a few shortcuts, and came in the back way on Piney Mountain Church Road. I could have followed the directions on the website www.washburnstore.com, but I really enjoy riding the back roads.

I parked in front, and walked in to see a store that had a little of everything. It is still a neighborhood hardware store, and had pots and pans along with a vast selection of dungarees. I think that if a product was ever made, they would have it on their shelves, or they’d be able to get it for you. Ed Washburn – the current owner was sitting on the bench in the front of the store. We had a very pleasant chat about serving in the military. He was in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He is a very personable friendly person. He is very proud of his children, and grandchildren. He boasted about their accomplishments. They sound like they are a very intelligent group of people. He said that the intelligence didn’t come from him. His wife is the smart one of the family. They have been married for over 60 years. She helps him run the store. Every one of his descendants has worked in the store. He said that it’s a great place to establish their values in life.

Before I left, I walked across the road to take a few pictures of their home. It looks like an old southern mansion. During the summer, it’s hard to get a clear picture of the building because of all the trees blocking the view. I’d really love to see the inside. It must be grand!

I turned north on Bostic-Sunshine Highway, and followed it through many small communities until I stopped at the stop sign at Rt 226. I turned right to head home.

Rust In The Wind

There's a light on in the universe For a sweet soul heading home. She will stop for short goodbyes For her spirits now her own. She was feisty when her feet dug in She knew when to back away, She backed down to no one though Before she had her say. Tragedy was a constant friend, In a lifetime sometimes cruel, She picked up life when sadness ended Yvonne always knew life's rules. I knew her in the happy times Some thirty years ago, I knew her in the sad times We were good friends you know. She left us all to soon, Life said she couldn't stay, God lit a lamp across the universe So she could find her way Fred Steele © 2017 Road Scribes of America ™

My name is

Hannah Herman

and this is my story This is my story as a female rider. My whole life I have been riding bikes, dirt bikes and four wheelers. I grew up in Colorado where my dad would take our family to the mountains all the time to ride the trails. We even set up a few jumps in our back yard for the days we wanted to ride after we finished our school work. The weekends that we weren’t in the mountains my dad would take our family to the local motorsport park too watch my cousin race our family dragster, but in between his runs we would be outside the gate riding the trails they had. Once I started high school my parents moved my family and I to South Carolina. I soon realized that there was nothing to do here. I had never been a beach person and the out-door activities here did not compare to Colorado’s. I started to lose touch with my “tomboy” side as some people would call it and started doing typical girl stuff. By junior year I started dating a guy for three years before we broke, but I’ll save you all the boring teenage heart break drama. After a few months of heart ache and finding myself again I realized how much I had changed into a person I didn’t recognize. That’s when I decided I was going to start doing things that made happy when I was younger. I played basketball, worked out, saw friends and went skydiving, but the one thing I wanted to do was ride again. We do not have a motorsport park here so a dirt bike would be useless. That is when I decided to make the world my personal motorsport park. So, without telling my parents, and at the age of 19, I went and bought a new 2016 ZX6R. I knew the basics to riding because I had ridden my whole life, but I was just a little rusty and needed to get comfortable with the weight and feel for a street bike.

On August 19th 2017 everything in my life changed. I was riding on the interstate over a bridge when my friend split lanes to the left to pass a car and I went to the right; as he went flying past a semitruck that was coming over the semi driver jerked the wheel the other way and hit his brakes. I had already starting passing as was going left to come back over when the tailor swung towards me and hit me on the right side. I was ejected into the air and then slid through a lane of traffic before being run over by a suburban in the other lane. I was conscious the whole time and I remember saying to myself “God have my back today is the day I go down”.

Without any fear I hopped on and called my dad through my Sena just to confirm how to shift properly. In under 5 min of talking me through shifting I hung up and took off. I drove around the neighborhood annoying people with my M4 exhaust for almost 4 hours while I practiced stopping and going. As the weeks pressed on I rode every second I could and went on more group rides. The more I rode the better I felt and I had place to put positive energy toward so I could get better. I was so proud of myself for finding something that helped me reconnect with myself and opening my eyes to a whole new world.

I spent almost a two days in the ICU before having my emergency had surgery. I then spent another three days in the trauma spin unit before getting discharged. I was home bound for about two months before I started doing things here and there on my own. I spent 3 months doing lower extremity physical therapy before I took it into my own hands and just went in for check-ups. I needed a second surgery on my hand in January 2018 after spending 5 months doing Occupational therapy. The doctors told me it would be a year to a year and half before my life was the new normal. I said, I’ll be better in 6 months and I’ll have my life back. February 27th just a few days after my 6-month anniversary I was discharged and ready to face the world again.

I am still limited in what my body can handle, but I am riding again, working out, going to nursing school and working. I have made a YouTube channel called MissMotoSport, but have not posted anything yet. My channel is going to be about my journey through my recovery and riding videos so hopefully I can share the experience I have learned with others. I have learned so much through my experiences, but I would not change a thing that happened to me.

Before the accident people would ask why I’m endangering myself and ever since the accident that’s all I ever hear. A lot of people, even some riders, do not understand why I would get back on after working so hard in therapy. I have a new perspective on life and how precious our time here is and not to take anything for granted. I ride because God gave me a second chance to do something great, not because I think I’m invisible after surviving what I did, but because every day I want to add life to my days and not days to my life. I want to prove to myself and others you can come back from anything. Stories like mine have motivated me so much before my accident, but now I have the chance to be that person in someone else’s life. I ride to remind myself how amazing it is to be here today, to never take life for granted and to enjoy the ride you are taking.

We Say Good Bye Marshal Collier

Marshal Collier was born May 31st, 1941, in Northampton County in North Carolina. He, along with his parents, started Collier HarleyDavidson way back in 1966. I stopped in at Coller HD almost every day for several years when I was a courier for FedEx. Marshal always took time from whatever he was doing to chat with me. He knew a lot of folks, he knew a lot of things and he had a lot of friends. I loved to hear him tell the stories about my great uncle, Alfred Davis, and several other guys that he would get together and ride to places with, like to Daytona, as they often did. Marshal was also a pilot and owned his own plane. He was the best at lacing a motorcycle tire and I heard that from many folks through the years. He also loved to poke fun and kid folks. All in good fun and you knew that if he liked you that was what he would do. He was always a pleasure to be around and a an endless volume of knowledge. Marshal was a family man and thought the world of his wife, Dean, and all his children and many grandchildren. He will be missed by many.

We Say Good Bye R. Lee Ermy Ermy was perhaps most famous for his role as the terrifyingly full-on Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (my all-time favorite movie), it won’t come as any great surprise to anybody who has seen the film that Kansas-born Ermey was a former United States Marine Corps staff sergeant and honorary gunnery sergeant, and also served as a drill instructor. It likely also won’t surprise that Kubrick has since stated Ermey’s talents didn’t just stretch to “grown-up” outings, however, with him giving his unique voice to the character Sarge in the Toy Story films. Meanwhile, he also contributed to animated TV series including SpongeBob SquarePants, Kim Possible, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesome, Family Guy and DC’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Ultimately, perhaps his most loved voiceover appearances were his two outings in The Simpsons, as the wonderfully named Colonel Leslie “Hap” Hapablap. Even gamers haven’t escaped Ermey’s commanding presence, with him lending voice to everything from the predictable such as Call of Duty: Ghosts to the unexpected, in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex.

Ermy as Gunnery Sargeant Hartman from the movie, Full Metal Jacket.

He was also known in the motorcycle world by many and was a spokesman for Victory Motorcycles at many biker events across the country, including the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota. Ermy died from complications of neumonia at the age of 74.

The Mighty Sa T

he event was catered this year by The Nashville Exchange. The menu consisted of shrimp & grits as the main dish with other items to include pasta salad & “pick ups” to include chicken salad & pimiento cheese in phyllo cups, fruit and veggies, & sweet treats’. There were live and silent auctions for really nice donations from various local businesses and individuals. Nash Arts is a private, nonprofit organization, which celebrates, promotes and produces artists and arts activities, provides support to other area arts organizations and encourages and generates arts education in order to enhance the quality of life in Nash County. Our organization showcases local, regional and national artists, professional and emerging, as well as self-taught artists and craftsmen. Our goal is to reach out to all members of our community. Nash Arts is housed in The Nash Arts Center, a former Baptist Church built in 1914, that was slated to be demolished and made into a parking lot in 1983, much to the dismay of local citizens.

W

e had the pleasure of s eeing The Mighty Saints of Soul “Live” at Nash Arts in Nashville, N.C., at the Denim and Diamonds Gala. An annual event that Nash Arts holds each year to raise money for the arts. The event was held on 13 April 18. What a great venue for a concert! What is so special about concerts at Nash Arts? The set-up is such that you almost feel as if you are on stage with the performers. It is a very intimate setting, with seats close to the stage. Every seat in the house is a great seat! With the dome ceiling, the acoustics seem to envelope you instead of hitting you from the front as with most concerts. Randy Hignite, Jim Heidenreich, Danny Garner and Johnnie Byrd of The mighty Saints of Soul put on a heck of a performance.

he Mighty Saints of Soul is an upbeat funk and rock band with Randy Hignite on the keys and lead vocals, Jim Heidenreich on the drums and lead vocals, Danny Garner on the guitar and lead vocals, and Johnnie Byrd on the bass and lead vocals. Danny Garner on the guitar and lead vocals, and Johnnie Byrd on the bass and lead vocals. They have released two albums: You and I and Out of the Darkness. I purchased their album, You and I and have worn the thing slam out...plus, I know every word on the album by heart! They play for concerts, festivals, night clubs, weddings, private parties, and other events. Head over to their booking page or drop them an email if you would like to get in touch with them about a gig. Three out of the four of the guys (Randy, Jim, and Johnny) found their beginnings in The Avengers during the late 1960s, which eventually became The Band of Oz in 1970, one of the most successful groups in the Southeast. Since then, they have collaborated with numerous other bands and musicians, including The Avengers, The Embers, Lighthouse, and Sheryl Rouse. They played as Jackie Gore and The All Starz during the mid-2000s, however, when Jackie departed for The Legends of Beach in 2006, they welcomed Danny Garner (previously the lead guitarist and singer of Warehouse) as a member of their band. Thus they became known as The Mighty Saints of Soul.
