Editorz Notez I’ve said this many times before and it is so true. Life has a way of throwing us curve balls, left hooks, and even road alligators! We have to roll with those surprises. Fight head on! Sometimes it seems as though we can’t keep our head above water.
Happy Halloween Sometimes the punch to the gut is so severe that it almost seems impossible to stand up straight again. I find strength through my friends and family, but first and foremost, I find strength through God! Friends and family are the glue that bind and help keep me grounded. But I would not be here or be doing this magazine without God in my life! No matter what life throws at ya or how big the road alligator is in your path, stand up tall and proud! Meet it head on! ...and know that God is by your side! If you don’t believe me, just ask Him yourself! I continue to do Behind Barz Magazine because I love my biker family! I love the Behind Barz Life! You all were there for me when I was struggling with cancer. You continue to support me in this venture still today. I will also be here to support you, the biker community as long as I can. I have many friends who help me but I am still a one woman show...and I am a little slow. Just know that I’ll get there eventually. Call me if you need me. Let me know how I can help. If you do not know me, all you have to know is that I am a biker. Biker’s take care of their own! God Bless each of you! See you out on the road! Doobie

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar.
What a wonderful way to celebrate birthdays to ask for gifts of care package items and postage funds. Big thank you to the Frohnapple family!
Thank you to these soldiers who spend this evening helping to sort donations.
Happy faces! Care packages from home mean so much to our troops! A simple note of encour agement. A familiar snack. Just knowing there is support from back home means the world!
Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Chaplains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. Our volunteers go to any depths for our troops! Laura Jackson is seen here collecting flat rocks from a mountain creek to be painted with holiday scenes to include in our care packages. Melissa Rouse - you and Justin can be on painting duty!

Need your help! We are very grateful for the donation of the space for our operations center in Ayden for the past 6 years. The Harris Family donated the space in honor and remembrance of their father who would be very supportive of our mission and our military. We have been notified by the property management company that we now will be needing to pay rent and although it is a reduced amount, it still would cut into our abilities to mail care packages. We would have to reduce the amount of care packages mailed by about 336-340 each year. We are asking everyone to help us at this time. If you know anyone with an empty building, storefront, etc please reach out and ask if they would donate the space to us. We will pay utilities and make minor repairs. We operate already on a barebones budget with financial donations going for postage, utilities, phone service, and some minor expenses such as ziplock bags, toilet paper and paper towels! Please copy and share this post on your page. We want to stay in the Ayden/Winterville/Greenville areas. The other option would be to find donors willing to cover the cost of the lease which they are reducing to $6000 for a yearly lease. Please help. See you later
Saying, “See you later,” to a North Carolina National Guard unit! It is not an easy thing to do but we appreciate the support of USO of North Carolina, the Patriots Guard Riders, and the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, who coordinated escort service along with Green, Wilson, Nash, and Wake counties sheriffs.
The USO of North Carolina strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country, throughout their service to the nation. Check them out on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/USOofNC/ The North Carolina PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS is a group of volunteers made up of people from varying walks of life and all sides of the political spectrum. However, we all have one thing in common, a DEEP RESPECT for our brave men and women serving honorably and selflessly in our armed forces. You don't have to be a veteran. We don't care if you are for or against the war. You don't even have to ride a motorcycle. The only requirement is RESPECT. Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as INVITED GUESTS of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:
12
1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2. Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors. We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means. To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Practice Defensive I was pleased to hear what was said around the tables out back of the local HD dealership during a break for the students at the Basic Riding Course. “Learning doesn’t stop after the BRC”, “You’re never too old to learn”, and of course, this ever-present thought got implanted frequently, “look where you want to go… your bike goes where you look.” Well said! As most seasoned riders know and do—often without thinking about it—defensive riding helps riders avoid collisions and losing control of their bike. Collisions with cars or trucks typically leave a biker seriously injured or dead. Helmets and proper clothing do help, but they don’t guarantee your safety from serious injury. Only avoiding the collision will keep riders out of harm’s way. And only practice will help the rider instinctively do what is needed in the seconds before the looming collision or mishap. We do what we think and practice. And practice must be done correctly. A bad habit can be locked in just as easily as the a good one. And then there’s the bad habit learned from experience. An experienced rider at a bike rally was telling me recently that he almost never uses his front brakes anymore. When asked why, he told me he had hit his front brakes and his bike threw him when the front wheel locked up. I asked more about the situation, and he told me he was going slow on a dirt pathway at a rally and was about to stop at his campsite when it happened. Until that time he had always used both brakes without a mishap. In other words, he had decided it was safer for him to use only a third of his brakes to stop from then on (he had two disc brakes on his front wheel). And not just when riding off the pavement, he meant ALWAYS. Of course, he could get a bike with an antilock braking system (ABS), but no, he was keeping his trusty Harley. This worried me, so I explained about traction on loose surfaces versus dry pavement, stopping power of brakes, weight transference, and emergency stopping.

Wayne Littrell
Next, we practiced. Emergency stops, slowspeed maneuvering on both dirt and pavement, and stopping on loose surfaces. Talking with him I learned that even after ten plus years of riding he had never practiced slow-speed maneuvering. Turning around on a narrow two-lane road was his biggest fear. He was a fast learner and within an hour he was turning around in less space than the width of a country highway. Next, he was relearning how to use his front brakes on loose or slippery surfaces and doing emergency stops on both paved and unpaved roads. After skidding a few times and recovering, he gave the front brakes another try being sure to take it easier on them than the rear brake. Mission accomplished! Practice locks in good habits; namely, the things you do when you don’t have time to think about it. For example, an obstacle or pothole appears in the road ahead that you don’t see at first like when you’re behind a truck or car. Or a car pulls out in front of you or stops suddenly. Here’s something that has kept me safe for almost 50 years, a ton of miles, and an untold number of close calls with disaster.
www.facebook.com/behindbarzmag
I practice all the time. I’m an almost daily rider and while riding on lightly-traveled roads with no traffic around I perform emergency stops and swerves. I pick out a place in the road ahead and pretend it is something I must avoid. You learn how to not only avoid a skid but learn what to do when you do lock up. Start slow and it’s a great idea to have an experienced rider with you to give you feedback. And of course, anytime you change your bike—add a new accessory, load up for a camping trip, or are riding a different bike— practice before heading out on that all-day (or week) adventure.

10:00 meeting. Sylvan Heights
BIRDPARK
The only way to practice is perfectly. There are abundant videos and learning material on the internet that will help. One of the most effective ways is to take an intermediate or advanced riding course where feedback is immediate and given by trained and certified instructors while you’re riding your own bike. The cost of a fancy pair of boots is a small price to pay to prevent an accident and is by far the best investment you can make in yourself and your bike.

Mountains, N.C.
The Mountains of N
Since I moved near Savannah, it’s a shorter trip for me to the northwestern mountains of North Carolina than to southwestern NC. But like almost everything, there’s a positive side. For me, revisiting old haunts and riding familiar roads gives me the opportunity to try some new routes to an area of NC I’ve used as a setting in two of my novels. For most bikers I know, they just want to get to the curvy roads and cooler temperatures in the mountains. Especially those from Alabama, Georgia, SC, and Florida. I understand—the southwestern area of NC is closer and a more familiar destination for many. And we know the area around Robbinsville well– the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Moonshiner 28, the BRP, and many motorcycle resorts and campgrounds. It’s a popular gateway to Tennessee and other attractions. Coming from the Savannah area, it’s actually some 65 miles closer to Blowing Rock than to Robbinsville depending on the route. On a bike, I try to avoid interstates and Atlanta, preferring to take the two-lane blacktop passing thru small towns unclogged by traffic. It’s much cooler on a hot, sunny day. Using my GPS, I find those lesser-traveled roads with attractions along the way. The GPS also helps me take side trips without ending up on an ungraded gravel road or a dead end and needing to backtrack. After all, the ride is the destination, not just where you’re headed. I was excited about this ride— I had not been back to the area for a while and it was an area the fugitive in my novels rode and hid out when he was on the run from the killers and the law. I love that area! There is less traffic and tourists, just as many curvy roads, Hot Springs, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, Linville Caverns, and of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway. A favorite road of mine is NC 209, ‘The Rattler’, that goes from Lake Junaluska (near Waynesville) to Hot Springs, NC. Another 30 miles on US 25 and you are in Del Rio, TN where the Bobarosa, a popular old-school biker bar/restaurant/campground is located on the fast-running waters of the French Broad River. A favorite place of mine, just 17 miles off the BR Parkway, is an old-school biker campground named Rider’s Roost in Ferguson, NC. You must ride in on a motorcycle (although some do walk in after leaving their cage in a parking area above the campground). There’s a wide, clear-water creek that runs through it, complete with abundant campsites along the water, cabins, clean bathrooms, and a waterfall with a deep pool full of fish below it. It also has a 2-bedroom condo with all the modern conveniences and covered parking. They are well-known for their events and parties, along with the long-lasting friendships born there. As we all should know, biker-based businesses in areas we go to ride the curves are subject to weather-related economic downturns. Even an old-school resort like Rider’s Roost suffers.
18
As many get older, they may opt to get a toy hauler, trailer in their bikes, and yes, ride trikes. I’ll be there someday I know. The Roost is one hold-out that doesn’t allow RVs. Founded in 1989, they are old-school and choose to improve their operation rather than open it up to the RV crowd. You have to ride (or walk) in. I like that. I spent a few days riding the curves, taking a different route there and back, and checking out a route that operators, David and Pam and friends have developed and named the ‘Cock’s Comb’. I’m impressed with the route they will be unveiling soon. Their parties are fabulous with catered food, karaoke, always a good band, and of course good friends to ride with—or not if you are like me and ride as a lone wolf. I do so mainly because I stop a lot to take pictures or take unplanned side trips when I see an interesting sign. For others, the stops are annoying—however, I gotta get pictures or write an extra 1000 words. Pictures are better. Lone Wolf’s Run This 28-mile route is inspired by the book, The Lone Wolf Murders. The route runs along several creeks and has some great views along the way.

I’m looking forward to September 14, when the CBA/ABATE of North Carolina will have their annual party at Rider’s Roost and the route will be revealed. All are invited, especially those in ABATE from NC and other states. It should be a real hoot. Until then, wave at some kids while you’re riding, smile and say hello to those that seem intimidated by us bikers, hold the door or help little old ladies, ride your bike to church and park out front, but most importantly, call the TV station a week or two before your group’s next charity event or benefit and ask them for coverage. Be prepared by having a spokesperson ready to talk about the event. With enough news coverage, viewers will learn that we’re not thugs like on ‘Sons of Anarchy’, but in actuality, are very charitable, honorable people that love to ride. And yes, we look prepared for what the road or real thugs throw at us, BUT we’re honorable, trustworthy, and typically great to have around in an emergency. We just need to advertise a bit. We all know how a bit of P.R. can influence public opinion.
ndBarz.com
We have f amilies, too. Many are Vets. The non-riding public do tend to stereotype bikers based on what is on TV and what they observe. We can improve that image simply, inexpensively, and efficiently. I’d love to see a movie where bikers are the good guys thwarting terrorists or seeing motorcycle commercials showing us as charitable family types that love to ride. Think what a difference it will make when lobbying at the legislature for laws to protect us, we get stopped by Barnie Fife, or when on the highway surrounded by cages. Thank God and a lot of work by ABATE and many others to get the Hands-Free law passed in Georgia. Enough said about that. Enjoy your rides—safely and defensively. Ride as if you’re invisible to others and be prepared with an escape path. Think, “what if…” when you see a cage. June JAMR 2018, Another Tremend Wake County, NC Blessed with beautiful sunny weather and blue skies, the June JAMR saddled up for Sarcoidosis, for their fourth annual event on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Registration began at 9:30 a.m. at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson of Raleigh. Following registration at 11:00 a.m., Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen served scrumptious fried chicken and side items in the banquet room upstairs at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson. During lunch, participants, volunteers, and sponsors were greeted by board members/co-founders, Tracy Grimes Watson and Troy Grimes, children of the late Jerry Grimes of Goldsboro – whom the name of the charity ride is derived from. JAMR is an acronym for Jerry’s Annual Memorial Ride. Angela Freelander and Maggie Hudson from the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) joined the group, all the way from Chicago, IL. During lunch they spoke and offered more detailed information about sarcoidosis and all that FSR does to help those who battle the disease. They then stuck with the group and rode the entire ride. Maggie even got brave enough to ride passenger with a long time JAMR participant. This was her first time on a bike, and she is hooked! 50/50 tickets, and bids for the silent auction were underway during registration and lunch. Final sales for big item raffle tickets were also offered during this time. Door prizes were awarded to lucky participants and swag bags filled by multiple sponsors were presented to riders and passengers. Kick stands went up at 12:30 p.m. and the June JAMR traveled from Wake County into Johnston County for the first stop on the route, at Double Barley Brewing Co. in Smithfield, NC. Drinks and cool off time was appreciated, as the heat temperatures continued to rise in the afternoon hours. Next stop was Fun Products, Inc. of Goldsboro, NC, where Jerry worked for nearly two decades. More refreshments and cool down time was offered here. Winners of the big item raffle and silent auction bidders were announced. The winner of the big item raffle grand prize, a Wilmington Dual Burner Cape Fear Classic Stainless Steel Gas Grill, was Ms. Cathy Reese of Pikeville, NC. From Fun Products, Inc., the group traveled to Wilson’s CycleMax for the ride finale. Here, additional bonus door prizes were awarded to lucky participants who stayed the course of the route to the finale. Additionally, the 50/50 drawing was held, awarding a nice chunk of cash to Ms. Hope Rodriguez of Goldsboro. This year’s ride brought 56 bikes, 17 of which had passengers, along with several cage riders, and our sponsoring roll back tow truck, provided by East Coast Towing of Raleigh, NC. The ride was documented with photography by Michael Jones and Virtual Drone Services and was escorted by multiple city and county law enforcement agencies.

A great big thanks to all June JAMR sponsors and affiliates for their unending support! As always, thanks to Behind Barz Magazine for allowing us to share our ride recaps and continuing to be a top sponsor of our annual event. Proceeds from this year’s June JAMR will be presented to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research and Faith FWB Church and Kitty Askins Hospice Center, both of Goldsboro, NC. A huge thank you to all who participated, partnered with, or sponsored the June JAMR. We could not reach those in need, or share information about the rare disease sarcoidosis, without each of you! Don’t forget, the June JAMR hosts its charity benefit ride annually on the 2nd Saturday of each June. Please mark your calendars now for the 5th Annual June JAMR, Saturday, June 8, 2019! We hope that you will plan to join us next year. More details for the next June JAMR to come! Tracy Watson

On July 29, Tar River Bikers For Christ hosted an “Ice Cream Social For Matthew” at Black Cat Harley-Davidson in Rocky Mount, N.C. We had homemade vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream and it was all so GOOD! Ask any of the people that were there. Tar River BFC raised $700 in two short hours on a HOT Sunday afternoon! Thanks everybody for every donation you made. Matthews has been recovering from some serious health problems from Thanksgiving of 2015. He suffered with a blood clot that caused his heart to stop three times and the last time for 19 minutes. Matthew is a miracle from God and he is our Hero because we can handle anything after what he has endured. His family (Bert, Sandy and Daniel) have been real hero’s, as well, because they have stood by Matthew every step of the way. American Motorcyclist Association, American Honda pay tribute to Nicky Hayden with two custom motorcycles U.S. racing icon's accomplishments to be celebrated with road racer, street tracker. PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association and American Honda are commissioning two custom motorcycles that celebrate the life and career of professional American road racer and flat tracker Nicky Hayden. Hayden passed away on May 22, 2017, as a result of injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while training on his road bicycle in Italy. "Nicky Hayden was the consummate American motorcycle racer, emerging from the amateur ranks to dominate American road racing on his way to the 2006 MotoGP World Championship," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "Moreover, he represented the best of sportsmanship and character, and never forgot his roots, even when competing on the world stage against living legends. It's our pleasure to work with American Honda to pay tribute to Hayden's competitive accomplishments and exceptional class." American Honda is donating two motorcycles to the project, a 2018 Honda CBR1000RR and a 2018 Honda XR650L. "Race fans the world over loved Nicky for his charm, his beautiful smile, and his willingness to stop and talk to anyone and everyone. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him and work with him loved him as well," said Keth Dowdle, Manager of Experiential Marketing at American Honda. "Nicky was a true champion in every sense of the word," Dowdle said. "He was humble and gracious even after all of his success. We all miss him dearly. The bikes that we donated to the AMA represent one of several projects that we're working on to celebrate Nicky's life for years to come." The CBR1000RR will be decked out in a full Repsol Honda livery, while the XR650L will be heavily modified in a streettracker motif by award-winning custom bike builder Tony Prust of Analog Cycles in Chicago. Renderings of the custom motorcycles will be unveiled on July 6 at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, Ohio, with the bikes themselves debuting during AMA Legends & Champions Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 7. Throughout 2019, the bikes will tour at select events and be on display at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame on the AMA campus in Pickerington, Ohio, before ultimately being raffled off to raise funds for the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, the 501c3 nonprofit that raises money to support the Hall of Fame. In addition to the 2006 MotoGP title, Hayden won the 2002 AMA Superbike Championship, the 1999 AMA 600 Supersport Championship and was the 1999 AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year. The tribute bikes are just the latest way that the AMA has honored Hayden's career. In June 2017, the AMA Board of Directors renamed the AMA Horizon Award, presented to standout amateur racers who are going pro, in Nicky Hayden's memory. Hayden received the inaugural AMA Horizon Award in 1997 as a result of his stellar amateur flat-track career. About the American Motorcyclist Association Founded in 1924, the AMA is a not-for-profit member-based association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. As the world's largest motorcycling rights and event sanctioning organization, the AMA advocates for riders' interests at all levels of government and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events every year. mind of big ed On top of all this was wildish hair and a wildish beard but what stuck out in my mind was this old leather rugged hat.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
It was a hat I’d never seen before. It was black and looked as if it had many years upon it and I got to say, it fitted the look of the man that changed my life forever. My father. We rode in the VW til we made it to his house. Upon arrival that’s when I met my brother, Ed and sister Wendy. Me and my brother had met once before but at that time I didn’t know who he was, but it wasn’t long I became a part of their lives and they became a very loved part of mine.
Hello all you happy people!!! I’m in the sharing mood. I got a story about my life I’m going to share with you. It consists of a father and son and an old leather hat. The Hat... Many many years ago. . . I was about 12 when I was hanging out with my cousin, Timmy. He had a 30.30 rifle and we were loading it up in his truck to shoot one day. As we where in his room I was admiring a poster on his wall. The poster was about Vietnam. I didn’t have time to read it all but as I was telling Timmy how cool the poster was, Timmy said, ”Yea..That’s Vietnam, man. It was a bad ass war!” Then he said, “You know, Your Dad fought in that war.” (until this moment I very rarely heard of my Dad. I seen him once some years prior when he lived across the street from my Uncle Larry. I made it a mission to walk across the street to see him for my self. But even then I didn’t know really what to say.) Anyway, Timmy told me, “You know he wants to see you right?” I was like what? He said, “Yea...Your Dad has been teaching me how to weld. I see him all the time. You should give him a chance and see him.” Now fast forwarding some a bit... When I got to officially meet my Dad he pulled up to my house. I was 13 years old. I got in to an old blueish VW Beatle he had converted into a truck. As I climbed in I saw a stocky bearded fellow. Wrangle jean shirt. Old worn jean pants with looked to be logger boots.

When I met my father. I was in a very rebellious state in my life. I was getting into trouble a lot at home. I was doing all the wrong things. I just didn’t seem to fit no matter where I was. I didn’t have a lot of friends in school. I didn’t seem to understand a lot things going on. But when my father came in to my life he taught me a different world. I was welding. I was shooting guns. I was cleaning car parts and hanging out with this man in the shed listening to his stories of his life. We where canoing the rivers and creeks. We hunted arrow heads and tracking through the woods. He would make me feel like I wasn’t some bratty kid. I felt as if my opinion mattered. He would string up lights in the woods behind the house and at night me and my brother would load up our 22 rifles and fire shots at them from on top of the house. As a kid this was wild and fun. I grew to love my Father it seemed over night. Sure I had questions of why he and my mother broke up. Why didn’t he come to see me and my sister, Lisa. I had some anger, But he slowly was wiping that anger away. Years passed. I just forgave him for his absence in my years before we met. I really enjoyed our time. Sure, there was some drama, But the good times were some of the best. 13 to 19 is some fast years. You have no idea as a kid how fast they do travel. I was 17 about to turn 18. I made up my mind I was going to be a Marine. I went to the recruiting office and talked to the recruiter. After he told me the things I needed to have and the test I would be scheduled to take I would be on my way to being a Marine. I knew this would make my Dad proud. I got to a phone and called him. As I dropped the news. He was silent. He asked Have I signed anything. I said not yet. He then said. Come see him at home now...right now. I could tell he was not happy...Definitely not proud. When I arrived. We loaded up and went to Porkys Bar. That’s when he told me the news.. He had cancer.
BehindBarz.com
The Hat He said he was going to die within 9 months...I held back my tears. Dad wanted his boys to be strong. I was dying inside...my mind raced... I’ve not got enough time with him. There’s still things to do. He still had so much to teach me. We’ve not even got to the best parts of my life yet. ........ Sad news came...... He was gone
to ride back home when I spotted the place. I got the Hat.. I wear it from time to time. I’ve worn it especially during times when my children were born or I have taken pictures with them wearing the hat. Kinda my way of having Dad present around them. NOT in some sick mental case way, but It makes me think of him and I just feel as if he’s closer to me.
I felt my Grandpa’s hand as he reached over to place his hand on my shoulder as the preacher spoke of a life my Dad had lived and things he himself knew of him. My Grandpa’s hand was all I could feel cause I was so f***ing numb inside! I was mad...I was hurt... I felt alone. He had left me...again.
Sure, that hat is far from being in any kind fashion especially today’s times. But that’s not what matters to me. That Leather hat was Dad.. And that’s why I still have it as one of my most valued possessions...
Years went by. The wound heals with time but as I was getting to understand myself and who I was. I began to get involved with motorcycles. Or wasn’t long I was riding and having a blast. I felt a deep connection with motorcycles and it to being a part of my Dad’s life, as well. In a way, being a biker like my Dad made me feel closer to him..
Well, I hope y’all enjoyed the story. I do enjoy thinking back when my Dad was alive and thinking about the time we shared. Its one of the reasons I tell people who are going through a rough patch or have a few arguments with their folks. It’s best to figure it out and work through it. You only get one Mom and Dad. When they are gone, they’re gone.!
He wore that old biker hat all the way to the grave. It was who he is and who he was. He told me as a child where he got that hat. So, I made it a purpose to one day ride my bike to the mountains and get the hat like his at the very same store.
And when I’m dead...That hat will burn with me.

z t a e d l i w For those of you who like to hunt, kill, and prepare your own food, we have compiled some of our favorite recipes. We will showcase them for you here. If you do not bag your own game and would rather buy it, there are many fine butcher shops and specialty meat markets that offer rabbit, hare, turkey, venison, duck, goose, quail, pheasant, and other big and small game. So, no excuses! As any Southerner knows, both raccoon and opposum make excellent eating! But neither of these are found in specialty butcher shops or the like. These animals are truly wild.
Since a feast of game for most people is not an everyday affair...sad but true...you may substitute other commonly used meats for the ones listed here. We don’t recomment this, though. You ride, don’t you? Let your taste buds go wild, too!
Alligators were more abundant closer to the coastline, further south, and in locations that limit access by people and provide more protection for alligators.
Alligator Distribution and Abundance in North Carolina
Chiefly driven by the commercial market for alligator skin products, alligator populations were greatly diminished by the mid-twentieth century because of unregulated harvest throughout their range. Under the 1966 Endangered Species Preservation Act, the very first list of endangered species compiled in 1967 (32 FR 4001) included the American Alligator. This act authorized the use of federal funds for the acquisition of lands inhabited by listed species, but take (“to harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect, or to attempt to engage in any such conduct”) of these species was not prohibited by federal law until Congress passed the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
In North Carolina, the alligator occurs just north of Albemarle Sound, south along the eastern Coastal Plain, and west as far as Robeson County (Palmer and Braswell 1995; Gardner et al. 2016). The aquatic habitats that alligators occupy vary widely across their range in North Carolina and from season to season. Alligators tend to prefer fresh to brackish waters, although they can tolerate higher levels of salinity for short periods of time. They inhabit swamps, creeks, rivers, tidal marshes, canals, ponds, lakes, and reservoirs. A recent study of alligators in North Carolina (Gardner et al. 2016) showed that alligator populations are likely stable or slightly increasing and their current distribution appears to be relatively consistent with the results of a study conducted 30 years ago (O’Brien and Doerr 1986). Although these results did not indicate a population decline, the researchers noted that alligators occur in patchy distributions and very low densities across much of their North Carolina range.

Historic and Ongoing Conservation Efforts
With the rare exception of individuals taken by WRC employees or permitted Wildlife Damage Control Agents (e.g., if an alligator poses a threat to public safety), there has been no legal harvest of alligators in North Carolina since 1973. Starting Sept. 1, people in three Hyde County towns will be able to register for a lottery to hunt alligators in N.C. Only 20 permits will be drawn and the license is $250 to hunt. There are 5 permits for designated areas around Swan Quarter; another 5 for Fairfield; and 10 for Engelhard.
Tips...Until it’s fried, alligator gets good grades for nutrition, especially in the protein department. A four-ounce serving has 110 calories (20 from fat), 2 grams total fat, .5 grams saturated fat, 55 milligrams cholesterol, 55 milligrams sodium, no carbohydrates and 24 grams of protein. YUM!
“GRILLED GATOR KABOBS”
“GATOR FINGERS”
Yield: Approximately 4 ¼ cups Total time: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound alligator meat, cut into chunks (can substitute chicken or pork ~ but why?) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Flour, for dredging 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup hot sauce 1 bottle store bought ranch dressing, for dipping
1/2 cup orange juice concentrate 1/4 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1 pound alligator meat, cut into 1-inch cubes assorted vegetables or fruit, cubed DIRECTIONS:
DIRECTIONS: Heat a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F. Lightly season gator meat with salt and pepper prior to dredging them in flour. Combine buttermilk and hot sauce into 1 mixture. Dip the gator meat into the buttermilk and hot sauce mixture and dip, once again, in flour. Then place in deep fryer until golden brown, just a couple minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve with ranch dressing.
1. For the marinade, combine orange concentrate, orange juice, soy sauce, sugar and spices in a medium glass bowl. Reserve half for basting. 2. Add alligator cubes; stir to coat well. 3. Marinate for at least 15 minutes or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator for increased flavor. 4. Soak wooden skewers in water for 10 minutes to prevent them from burning. 5. Thread marinated alligator cubes onto skewers, alternating with vegetable or fruit cubes. 6. Heat the grill to high heat and grill kabobs for 6 to 8 minutes, turning once. 7. Brush with extra marinade for the first 5 min utes. Discard any leftover marinade.

Those Smilin' Angels Rumblin' down under in wide open spaces. Rollin' the highway, with wind in our faces. There's nothing that matches the way that it feels, when we're in control of our two wheels. Been through some bad times, and times that were great ! We've ridin' bad weather, and stayed out too late. We've calloused our palm, with throttle in hand, out riding the back roads all over this land. We're awful proud, of those we call friend. They ride right beside us, through thick, til the end. They share with us life, and share with us beers. Share with us laughter, and share wtih us tears. Along down this highway, we've lost us a few. Some that were strangers. Some that we knew. With no rhyme or reason, or so it would seem, but it was life's calling. It's what their fate deemed. Now, through our memories, they ride with us still. Our Guardian Angels, who know how we feel. They must be out riding, in better places. Our visions of them. show smiles on their faces. © Rod Hatter RSOA ™
He Still Feels The Rain They buried him last Tuesday But he still feels the rain, You might think I'm crazy, Even say that I'm insane. His spirit never died within him, So he will ride again. He will see the buttercups That show their bloom in spring, He will stop beside an orchard To hear the songbirds sing. He'll smell hot asphalt from the highway Chase the white line down the road, They buried him last Tuesday But he still feels the rain You might think that I am crazy Even say that I'm insane, His spirit never died within him So he will ride again. He will lie beneath the howling wind Under waves of falling snow, Until the grass is green again And it is time for him to go, Two wheels scream to a throttles thunder Arms outstretched to reach the bars, The forever spirit of the rider Is written in the stars. Written in the lines of age Punctuated with his scars. To play tag with the breeze When shadows start dancing To the rhythm of the leaves. The morning silence is a mystery In echo's we can't tell. For echo's all ring hollow Like pebbles in a well. While you're busy looking down at me For things I didn't do, Be thankful you got lucky, Cause I could just as well be you. My circle it gets smaller In the heatwaves of the street, I am looking for some scraps, like gold That someone didn't eat. I keep trying everyday Through the stories that I tell, I am looking for an exit Or the entrance out of hell. My salvation comes from my survival And the things that you can't see, While you tuck away your tax break wealth Pretending you are free. Some are convicted by the bottle, Or the needle work of time, I am convicted by my loneliness And life's songs that didn't rhyme. But we all end up in heaven In our own space and time. Some cling to their Midas Touch And all the wealth that they can find I will wait for the sunshine of the morning To play tag with the breeze When the shadows all start dancing To the rhythm of the leaves. We're all looking for the same door Its just up around the bend. I keep trying everyday Through the stories that I tell, I am looking for an exit Or the entrance out of hell. For those who think they're better They only know one side, I know the dirt roads and blind corners Of life's few seconds ride.

labels! titles! patches! badges! colors! and a name! Redeemed House Biker church Jesus Riders A name is one’s identity, and with a name one can know who is mentioned if you know them or you know who they are. The name, Les, is someone i know. He is one of the other administrators of this page. When someone asks me about Les I know who they are talking about and because I know him personally, I can tell them about him. Les looks like a “Biker”, what was your first thought of what Les may look like when I said, “looks like a “Biker?” If you know a “Biker” you thought of that one you know, but what labels them as a biker? Editor, Paul Brokaw, of “Motorcyclist” in Los Angeles, Calif. wrote about a “but rather a small percentage of that number” of 4,000 motorcyclists who attended an AMA Race in Hollister on July 4th 1947, thus the image of the one %er. Then sprung the outlaw motorcycle clubs, returning veterans from war would be lashed out against as killers of innocent children, which they were not deserved to be labeled that way. Seems the only escape for these men was to get on a motorcycle and go into the wilderness as an outcast. These outlaw bikers knew first hand about the hypocrisy in government! How could these young men walk in the valley of the shadow of death believing in the will of freedom from evil by fighting it with all their might, only to come home to their own country and receive hate? These bikers took their brand of brotherhood of being faithful to each other for protection from a world of hypocrisy, and living to a code of their own justice, and then not trusting anyone on the outside. If anyone showed a desire to join, they could be allowed to hangout, but not too close. If a trust started one could be given the label of being a prospect, and if recognized as faithful, a badge of being a member. Those, I believe are the original “Bikers”, and because of character they lived as a “Brotherhood code” and paved a way for anyone to be “a Biker.” Back to my brother Les...to me he looks like what I know as a biker, long hair, and beard. He hates the hypocrisy in government, people who do evil, and innocent people taken advantage of. He believed John 3 :16 when he first read it. He will give you the shirt off his back,” side note “ ( He has more Harley shirts than anyone I know), lives to ride and rides to live, loves being free in the wind.

Rodger Duvall ~ Jesus Freak Thee Redeemed House biker Church
One thing though, as bad a biker as he looks, he is as gentle as a teddy bear when it comes to telling everybody about someone he knows, and that someone transformed him on the inside! If you ever get to meet Les, he is still gonna look like a biker, but if you get to know Les, you’ll get to know who is on the inside. When we get to know who is on the inside of a Disciple of Jesus, one will never look at the outside, one will be one Spirit with each other no matter what you ride or how you look. We try to change our outside to get inside, Jesus changes our inside to get us outside of ourselves, amen. Now lets die to self just like Jesus, don’t get labeled as a ”poser” a biker will never compromise the “Brotherhood code”, some professing Christians will go along with 99% of the worlds ways and then exaggerate the 1% so extreme that they make others feel uncomfortable with their self justification hype. Jesus said, ”woe” to the temple hypocrisy and they wanted to stone him. So, He gathered some other outlawed brothers and they gathered some prospects and were branded “Disciples of Jesus” and instructed them on recognizing those who make their alterable motives branch out as trees. Jesus told them in Matthew 7:16-17 “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistle? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit”... verse 20 “Wherefore by their fruit ye shall know them.” Spiritual fruit cannot be produced out of our own nature, because man is a sinner by nature and because of that nature he chooses to sin. In order for ones choice be changed to not sin, his nature has to be changed. Are you a biker by choice or birth? Are you a follower of Jesus by birth or choice? I am a biker by choice, and I am a follower of Jesus because of His birth and His choice to me an invitation to be changed forever as harvested fruit that will never decay as a Redeemed Jesus rider...biker.

Everybody knows that I just love rocks! So, I couldn’t pass up this story by Billy Ross! This is a feel good story straight outta Sturgis! You have all seen my antics through the week here in Sturgis, so now I will share a highlight. My crew was heading to the Drag Pipe and the Full Throttle on Da Bus and we transferred across from the Beaver Bar, where I saw a young girl working bored and unenthused at Da Bus information booth. She had a number of rocks sitting on top of her pamphlets so the wind wouldn't blow them away and I took a chance in an attempt to inspire her telling her she should be selling the rocks. She looked at me and laughed saying that would be stupid. So I expanded my effort, googling the Pet Rock, and showed her, that with the proper approach, anything was possible. She looked at me with dismay and I asked do you have a Sharpie. She said yes, so I told her to Autograph the Rock along with Sturgis 2018. She laughed and asked why, I said I want you to become a Rock Star and pay for your college education in the future. She smiled and then did as I asked. Then I had her make a sign, saying Autographed Sturgis Rock, just 1 dollar and place it with the rock. I told her someone would buy it, I am sure of that. So she did and I smiled and we parted ways. I walked over to a buddy and glanced back at her seeing her take a picture of the rock probably to text to a friend in good humor. So I gave my buddy a dollar and told him to get a pamphlet and buy the rock before we leave. He did and gave me the rock on the bus, saying you should have seen the look on her face when I asked to buy it. She was truly surprised at her fortune. So we continued with our day returning after 4 hours, my sister and her husband stopped at her booth asking how the rock business was going, she responded saying she had only sold one. My sister looked and saw she had applied herself and added a few idea's of her own on her inventory. Her rock said, " My parents went to Sturgis for a whole week and all I got was this stupid rock. Sturgis 2018. She increased the price to 2 dollars, as well, and yes, my sister bought the rock, to that young girls surprise, again. That young girl proved to me with just a little inspiration anything is possible and the youth of our country can and will do good things. I will cherish my little piece of Sturgis and keep it forever hoping when I return next year this young lady becomes that Rock Star, we envisioned. Life is good.
