nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar. Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Chaplains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. photos right: We are very saddened at the death of Mrs. Virginia Sickels, who crocheted over 1800 hats for our troops. Each hat was a unique color combination, and troops always had fun picking just the right colors. We always appreciated her support and love for our military.

We have always appreciated the support of Congressman Walter Jones for our mission. Today, a veteran, Michael E Belk, delivered this donation drive in honor of Congressman Walter Jones. Many many veterans and military members received help from him. Rest In Peace sir. One of the ways that we support our troops is through partnerships with other organizations such as the USO of North Carolina. These partnerships allow resources to be more wisely distributed to our troops. Over the years we’ve become good friends with many volunteers who graciously give their times and talents to support our troops. One of the veterans who have volunteered for years at Seymour Johnson AFB is Al Pederson. Al was there for many flights leaving and coming home all hours of the day and night. He supported the airmen Welcome ECU School of business students to and their families in many different ways. our team! Al has now retired from volunteer work with the USO. We wish him well and will always hold him in our hearts. see photo below...
We are very proud to partner with USOs to provide snacks and relaxation for our deployed troops. (USO Kandahar)

"Best of the Best"
Enjoying the great food... Doobie & Darron
Some of our favorite eateries!
These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! DICK’S HOT DOG STAND WILSON, N.C. Darron and I visited Dick’s Hot Dog Stand for a late lunch recently. The parking lot was still packed, as it usually is. So, we drove around the block once and when we came back around we were able to get a park.
Hot dog, cheeseburger, french fries and that famous chili! Check out that homemade gravy!
Everything I have ever eaten at DHS has been great! Their hot dogs are my favorite but I also love their french fries with a side of gravy (I always order my fries barely cooked and they were cooked just right)! I also ordered a cheese burger. It was just as wonderful as the last time I ate there! Darron got two hotdogs and an order of fries. Our food came to the table piping hot and our waitress kept our beverages topped off. Dick’s Hot Dog Stand, situated on the corner of Nash and Pearson streets, began in 1921 when Socrates “Dick” Gliarmis sold the very first hot dog. Across the street from the restaurant’s current location the same delicious hot dogs were sold out of a wooden grocery store for a nickel. Ninety-eight years later, the name and the restaurant are still going strong. Dick’s Hot Dog Stand survived the Roaring ’20s, two world wars, and the Great Depression, never closing its doors. Dick’s is still serving their famous chili recipe since that they have used since 1921! Their chili makes everything better! It was made in secret with fresh ingredients and fresh ground beef, was originally created by Socrates. Campbell’s Soup once approached Socrates about having his famous chili canned. He turned them down because he wanted to keep the recipe in the family. They are located in downtown Wilson. You could spend your entire day there just looking at and reading all the memorabilia on the walls! So many famous athletes, movie stars, and politicians have eaten at Dick’s over the years! Stop in for a bite and enjoy the scenery...While you are at it, enjoy a great meal and pick up a copy of Behind Barz Motorcycle Mag! Darron & Doobie

Russ Varnell
& His Too Country Band
Russ Varnell & His Too Country Band performed at Nash Arts on 12 January 2019. They performed a great show. Russ likes to talk to the audiance in-between songs. He loves to ingage the crowd and it makes for a relaxing and fun experience. If you like traditional or real country, then this is the band for you! The cool thing is that Russ is a local talent and has been performing for years in the area. If you get a chance to see his show, we highly suggest that you do! photos: Doobie
Nashville, NC Born and raised in Black Creek, North Carolina, Russ Varnell says “My parents raised me up listening to 100% hardcore traditional country music.” Russ grew up watching “HEE HAW and the “Porter Wagoner Show” on TV, and listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio, with his parents - whenever they could get it to come in clear enough on their old home clock radio. Russ musical influences are: George Jones, Merle Haggard, Elvis, Hank Sr., Ernest Tubb, Del Reeves, Don Rich, Red Simpson and most of all… the Legendary Buck Owens! “I’m 100% a traditional real country singer” says Russ. “Nothing makes me more upset and let down than when I see and hear singers in our industry who claim to be country and then watch them sound like a rock - or anything but a country singer!” “I sometimes think that my generation doesn’t even know what a country singer supposed to sound like.”
In the late 1990’s, a lifelong dream came true for Russ when on a crazy idea he decided to buy a plane ticket to Bakersfield California - just to go meet his idol and hero, Buck Owens, and see him perform at his Country Music Nightclub. Little did Russ, or anyone, ever realize that he and his hero Buck would become friends - and especially no one thought that Buck would invite Russ up to perform at the annual Buck Owens Birthday Party! Since then, Russ has been honored to perform with Buck and the Legendary Buckaroos on several different occasions in sunny California. Russ graduated in 1993 from Beddingfield High School in Wilson, NC and has graduated from the Nash Community College Radio Broadcasting Course, which enabled Russ to have his very own Radio show - formerly on WMPM 1270 AM in Smithfield NC. Russ left his radio show when his busy performing schedule really took off and WHIGTV in Rocky Mount offered
him the chance to host, write, direct, and produce his own show. “The Russ Varnell Show” is still being broadcast on WHIGTV in Rocky Mount NC every week for several years now. Russ stays very busy performing several shows every week either in his home state of NC, CA, TN, or VA…or wherever there is a crowd of folks willing to listen to some fine & true honky tonk country music. Russ also writes some of his songs that he performs, which he has copyrighted with BMI Music in Nashville, TN, with whom Russ is a signed songwriter. Band Members: Russ Varnell - Fearless Leader/Singer Ricky Hagan - Steal Player/Harmony Singer Roger Gilmore - Drummer/Harmony Singer Evan Rose - Base Guitar Dave Evans - Lead Guitar Joy Williams - Female Vocalist

Travis Pastrana named American Motorcyclist Association 2018 Motorcyclist of the Year! Racer, daredevil, philanthropist shined positive light on motorcycling. PICKERINGTON, OHIO -The American Motorcyclist Association 2018 Motorcyclist of the Year is Travis Pastrana, a professional motocross racer turned action sports daredevil and charity fundraiser. Awarded annually, the AMA Motorcyclist of the Year designation recognizes the individual or group that had the most profound impact on the world of motorcycling in the previous 12 months. For one night in July, Pastrana captured the imagination of millions worldwide as he completed three motorcycle jumps in Las Vegas. The jumps were inspired by similar attempts by legendary daredevil Evel Knievel in the late 1960s and the 1970s.
In addition to his high-profile Las Vegas stunts, Pastrana raised awareness of the devastation caused to Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria and helped raise money to rebuild motocross tracks, homes and a school playground. Pastrana’s career in extreme sports began as one of the country’s top amateur motocross racers. Pastrana won his first AMA amateur national championship at the AMA Amateur Motocross Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in 1994. In all, Pastrana won five AMA amateur titles before being awarded the AMA Motocross Horizon Award in 1999, presents annually to an amateur racer poised for excellence in the pro ranks.
Pastrana is a Charter Life Member of the AMA, signifying 25 years of continuous membership in the association. “Few things or people in motorcycling today capture the fascination of today’s youth like Knievel did for me as a boy,” AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman said. “Travis Pastrana’s performance no doubt captured the attention of young people in a way that hasn’t been done since the days of Knievel. “He drew positive attention to motorcycling through mainstream media in a manner that helps to promote motorcycling and the motorcycle lifestyle,” Dingman explained. “It is for this reason that the AMA Board of Directors has named Travis Pastrana the 2018 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year.”
About the American Motorcyclist Association Founded in 1924, the AMA is a not-for-profit member-based association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. As the world's largest motorcycling rights and event sanctioning organization, the AMA advocates for riders' interests at all levels of government and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events every year. The AMA also provides money-saving discounts on products and services for its members. Through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA honors the heroes and heritage of motorcycling. For more information, visit www.americanmotorcyclist.com.

Laconia 1941
story by Richard St. Peter
“I’m going. I am supposed to get the 45 next week.” The shop was getting a low mileage 1939, 45 in as soon as the customer’s 61 Knucklehead came in. Hazel knew the bike, it was in mint condition with a set of saddlebags and a luggage rack. No more carrying a change of clothes in the lining of her jacket...that only worked for one or two day runs. The Scout was a good bike to learn on but had high mialage and was almost ten years old now. It wasn’t dependable for any long runs. Hazel had saved everything she could for eight months working at the candy store just to buy it. Last March was the end for the Indian,
26
though. She had left her moms on College Hill Providence. The snow had melted some, then froze again making it twice as slippery. A motorcycle wasn’t the best thing to be traveling on. Going downhill the Scout went into a slide turning the bars hard left. She managed to keep the bike in her lane. It somehow stopped, but the fork was stuck turned left at the light. She put the stand down and got off the bike. Frustrated, she kicked the front end, it went straight. She could steer to the right, but one of the tubes was broken and could not turn left without staying turned. She would have to get off and kick it straight each time. It was a good thing that the roads were bad because it caused her to keep her speed down to a crawl. Even right-hand turns would have been impossible with the girder broken.
Living The life
The next day, Hazel took it to work. It was about six miles down Broad St. into Central Falls...one straight road. She hated taking the bus! At least most of the ice was gone. She stopped at Frank’s to see if he could fix it. He agreed to weld it if she would promise just to use it for back and forth to work. One week turned into two, then three, the weld was holding but the bike would wobble at any speed out of first gear. But finally, the 45 was ready for pick-up! Hazel was there as they were opening the shop to get it. She wanted to get used to it before going to Laconia with the Motor Maids. They always got the best seats. They were let in to be lap counters. Each was signed a racer and counted the laps he did, two or three to a racer. Nobody could win by falling back a lap!
The races were just a week away. Hazel couldn’t wait! She needed the break. Things had gotten crazy lately. A lot of guys had gone to Canada and inlisted. Some said it was just a matter of time before the U.S. got involved. Pop didn’t want to hear it, he said the great war was supposed to end that. He did not want to lose any of her four brothers. It was finally time to leave. The girls were together and riding in together. A pretty impressive sight! Thirty young women riding Harleys and Indians in perfect formation. They were all assigned their seats so nobody sat next to somebody with the same racer.
Sunday came and went...and so did the lap, without a hitch. She was just glad that it was over without her embarrasing herself. She even had some money left over after treating the girls to a lobster dinner. The best part was that she finally had a dependable motorcycle with bags and everything to travel on. Who knows what the future will bring? Everything was going great! How could anybody know what the next five years would bring!?
Story and photos were provided to us by Richard St. Peter, son of Hazel Duckworth. “In 1939 & in the 40’s my mom Hazel Duckworth shared a house with Linda Dugeau at Conimcut Point, Warwick, Rhode Island. My mom is number 3 on the Motor Maids list of charter members. I grew up with riding stories of the Maids and have many pictures from the beginning. The part that amazes me is how young they were, my mom was 20 in 1940. Mom taught me how to start my first panhead when I was 16 in 1970.”
Then there was a ruckus! It looked like all the racers were coming over and a loud bunch they were! They were all smiling and laughing, and they seemd to be gravitating to where Hazel was. She was 19, with red hair, green eyes, and all of maybe a hundred and five pounds. Seems they had taken a collection of one hundred dollars. They were going to give to Hazel to carry the checkered flag one lap before the big race Sunday. Hazel couldn’t stop blushing. All the guys were hanging on to her every word! She wasn’t going to do it but all the girls insisted! Assuring her they would help her spend it.

Racing The racing season is upon us once again. WearCrete Racing is gearing up for our 1st race during Daytona Bike Week 2019. We will be participating in Billy Lanes Sons of Speed event, March 9th, at New Smyrna Speedway. Jody Perewitz will be racing our 1919 Harley J model in the stock 61” class and also our 1949 WR 45 in the 45” class. Ebay Jake will be running our 1921 Harley J model in the “hot” 61 class and our 1951 WR 45 in the 45” class. WearCrete racing is a Goldsboro, NC based racing operation, in the past we fielded Super Late model cars and run all over the east from MI to Florida! However in the past several years, we have switched over to Vintage motorcycle racing. Ebay Jake has several wins, 2nd and 3rd place finishes, including a 2nd and 3rd last October during Biketoberfest in Daytona. Jody has captured a few 2nd and 3rd place finished and last October she put her name in the record books to become the 1st female to win a final event in the “stock” 61 class. Brittany Olsen won the inaugural race in the “hot” 61 class. Jody’s win in October was a very emotional win. You may recognize her name from, not only her famous father, Dave Perewitz, but also from her many activities, including land speed racing. Jody holds several world records, including being the “fastest female” on an American made V-Twin, she captured that record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. As Daytona draws near, we are thrashing as usual in the shop, trying to get all our machines ready to race... and this year we are trying a new combination that will be untested so, hopefully our calculations will be good and everything will work out. If you are going to be in Daytona for Bike Week make sure to come out to New Smyrna Speedway, Saturday, March 9th, and support, WearCrete Racing. We are also co-promoting a race with Tobacco Road HD and Wake County Speedway that will be held, Sept 21st., in Raleigh, NC. This event will be at Wake County Speedway and will be part of Capital City Bike Fest. The event name is, 2 Wheel Vintage Thunder. Make sure to check us out. If you have never seen these 100 year old motorcycles race, it is something you don’t want to miss. Also, check out my buddy, Rhett Rotten. He will be set-up at Destination Harley during Daytona and he will also be set up at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson during Capital City Bikefest, September 20th through the 22nd.

Motorcycle Cannonball 2018 Rider: Jody Perewitz For those of you not familiar with the Motorcycle Cannonball, it is a motorcycle endurance ride on pre 1928 motorcycles. The 2018 event started in Portland, ME and traveled back roads across the US to Portland, OR. We left Portland, ME on Sat Sept 8th and arrived in Portland, OR on Sat. Sept 22nd, a little over 3700 miles in 15 days. I rode a 1926 Harley-Davidson owned by Curtis Venable from Goldsboro, NC. Curtis sent us the bike. I along with the rest of our team, took the bike apart and rebuilt it so it could withstand the test of a cross country ride. Our team consisted of Guy LaFleur, Bob Gamache, Dave Neault, and Dave Perewitz. After completing the rebuild, myself along with Bob, rode the bike to make sure we had all the “bugs” worked out and man did we ever!! From the start of the ride, this 1926 Harley never missed a beat, it ran flawless the entire trip! Now remember, we went from Maine to Oregon, we crossed the flat lands of SD in 92 degree heat and 30 degrees and snow in Montana…This was truly an Epic adventure!!! Not all the participants had the same luck as others, there were several that blew their engines and were plagued by other mechanical breakdowns. In all there were around 104 entrants that started, and I think, 54 that finished with a perfect score.
30
A perfect score meant that you completed every mile under your own power and you made all the required stops on time. A regular day consisted of getting our route map 30 min. before our scheduled departure. We had to load our map in a little 7” wide holder and this was our ONLY navigation aid, NO GPS or other devices were allowed! We had check in points that we had to stop at and we had certain times to be there. Our route took us on some of the most beautiful rides in N. America! One of the highlights for me was Glacier National Park, and the scenery was truly breathtaking. As we neared the final check point my anticipation grew because I knew I was going to be 1 of only 3 females to ever complete the Cannonball with a perfect score and yet at the same time it was bittersweet because the end was near. I had made numerous new friends along the way and lasting memories that are priceless. My adventure would have never been possible without the help of my awesome crew and bike owner, as well as Rob @ Retro-Cycle for building a great engine! I am truly blessed and looking forward not only to the 2020 Motorcycle Cannonball but also the 1919 Motorcycle chase from MI-Key West and numerous other 2 wheel adventures including Billy Lanes Sons of Speed races and our very own 2 wheel Vintage Thunder in Raleigh, NC later in 1919. Follow Perewitz-Venable Cannonball #79 on FB for more info about our adventures.

mind of big ed Respect...That’s how you gain brotherhood, but that’s not the end of it folks. Brotherhood, true brotherhood is a lifetime. It’s a bond for a lifetime. You are either true and staying real or you are a fake. You know the answer in your heart. You ask yourself, “am I truly my brother’s keeper?” And if you have to ask yourself. Then you are a fake, a poser and you have no real place in a brotherhood. You’re just another person on two wheels trying to find your place in life.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
Hey Y’all!! So, you finally bought the bike. You’ve been wearing the shirts for years and now you feel complete. You now officially own a motorcycle. The very next minute you are on the road changing gears and feeling the wind in your face. You can’t wait to see another fellow biker on the road, either in your path or coming from the opposite side of the road. You pull the throttle back and can hear the sound of those mufflers but you also hear the wind blowing in to your ears. Now you’re starting to feel a few stings from a few suicidal bugs, but this ain’t no big deal. This is part of being a biker you tell yourself. I’m now a part of the brotherhood.... Now.. Let me stop you right there... There’s no way you are in any shape or form part of a brotherhood. Yes...You can argue that you have a motorcycle. You own the biker brotherhood shirt, but I will not look at you and say you are a part of a brotherhood. Nope...Can’t do it. You may be a part of the growing biker community but it takes more then owning a set of wheels and a get back whip to claim brotherhood in my eyes. You got to earn it. You got to gain some true friends and be true to them. Loyalty...You got to ride and put some miles under that seat with your crew. Ride under that hot sun in the hottest part of summer with your crew. Ride in the pouring rain thats soaking the nuts with your brothers and when their bike breaks down on the side of the road, you are there right beside them.
32
If you are truly your brother’s keeper, you earn my respect. Being a true brother means you are there for your bros and your sisters. You are not there for any personal gain. You don’t have some kind of agenda to gain access to another club or group of people. Your brotherhood is simply an extensions of your own personal family. That’s something you can’t buy at a bike shop. Your contribution to the brotherhood should be the same or as close as if they too came from your mother’s womb. There’s way too many fake friends. Too many sketchy family members. So, don’t be half hearted. Be true to your bros and sisters. Be a rock for them, as well. Your brotherhood has already been established through the bonds of the open road. Frost covered grass, rain flooded roads, and sun scorched black tops that are so hot you can see the devil dance in the distance. You have put in the dedication. That’s the key to brotherhood. Loyalty and dedication...Let’s add one more thing man.. Have fun. We only got one chance in this life and we have to work most hours on it. So, when you ride have fun. Let stress go. When you pull up to your crew show them the love you have for riding and being in the brotherhood man. Times can bring you down I’m sure but when you are with your crew that’s the time to cut that shit loose and enjoy the road in the wind and knowing you are with a group of guys and gals that enjoying this life with you.
Live to ride and ride free y’all Big Ed/ 2Timer

Coming to Nash Arts in Nashville, NC Confederate Railroad first rolled onto the national country music scene in the early 90s with its unique style and sound. Headed by founder and frontman Danny Shirley, the former backup band for both David Allan Coe and Johnny Paycheck got their big break by signing with Atlantic Records. The first single from their debut album ("Confederate Railroad") was "She Took It Like A Man". It went to No. 26, a preview of what was to come. "The next two singles, "Jesus and Mama" and "Queen of Memphis" went to the top of the charts. Three more huge hits followed, "Trashy Women", "When You Leave That Way You Can Never Go Back", and "She Never Cried". "Trashy" would lead to a Grammy nomination and become their signature song. That album with six hits and nearly three million sales brought Confederate the Academy of Country Music's Best New Group Award in 1993 as well as numerous nominations from the Country Music Association and the British Country Music Foundation. The second album, “Notorious”, produced one of the group’s most popular songs “Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind” which became a No. One video as well.

www.confederaterailroad.com
"Elvis and Andy" and "Summer in Dixie" would further establish the Railroad as one of the most versatile acts in the business. This album would sell more than one million. Their overal totals are 18 charted hits and five million albums sold. From rowdy country to raw emotion, a Confederate Railroad concert today covers a wide range of feelings. Young people will be there rocking to "Trashy Women", while their parents and even grandparents will likely be singing along to "Jesus and Mama". The band plays 100 or so dates each year. Whatever the venue, they are right at home...be it a fair, a club, or a biker show. Shirley, the lead singer and vocalist, and his mates, Mark Dufresne on drums, Mo Thaxton on bass and vocals, Rusty Hendrix on lead guitar and Joey Recker on keyboards and vocals are obviously having fun right along with their appreciative audience. At the end of each show, the band stays around until every fan who wants an autograph, or to pose with the group for a picture or just say "hello" is taken care of. March 1, 2019: 7:30PM Nash Arts' Nashville Showcase Event Sponsored by the Nash County Tourism Development Authority. $25 Advance Tickets/$30 Door/$35 Reserved Seating. Jon-Michael Willis, story & photos: Eric Stallings Jon-Michael Willis, Jon as I called him, was my best friend. Now, I don’t mean we were really good friends. I mean I knew he would be straight with me even if I didn’t like the answer. He had my back and truly cared about my well being. We were both in law enforcement and swore to look out for the other if anything ever happened. He was more of a brother than a friend. We celebrated holidays together, kids birthday parties, went on vacation together, we were really close. Things were a little tight at the time but we had a good time. I met Jon when he came to work at a police department I was working at. I was Sergeant of a shift and Jon was assigned to my shift. It wasn’t a large police department so a shift was a sergeant and two officers. We were dependent on each other for backup and support so, we were a close group of guys. We worked together and often hung out together and helped each other out off duty. After some time, Jon left the police department because of family issues and later was hired back at a neighboring sheriff’s office that he had worked at previously. Jon and I remained good friends and still hung out and everything. Jon was an experienced motorcycle rider and I had recently got my motorcycle endorsement and got a Honda Shadow 1100 with a salvaged title. It was my first motorcycle so I didn’t want to go get something really nice and bust it all up. Jon didn’t have a bike at the time but was a big HarleyDavidson fan. We often talked about getting a couple Harleys and going off on some rides. Jon would tell me about some of the rides he had gone on and the fun times on two wheels he had had. I looked forward to the day we could make that happen. I was a new rider, so I was reserved to say the least but excited to learn more and become more experienced. Jon said that we had to go riding in the mountains because there was just nothing like it around here. We lived in eastern North Carolina so it was pretty much flat. April 2010 I got the opportunity to go to, Gatlinburg TN, for a week and stay in a condo. There was plenty of room so I invited Jon and his girlfriend to come. Jon said he could borrow a bike and trailer that bike and my bike up when he came. He couldn’t come up till a day after and he had a truck so it worked out. I was excited to finally get a chance to ride in the mountains and scared at the same time but glad I had Jon there to coach me. .

My Best Friend Finally it was time to ride! We were staying on the side of a mountain with winding roads. Jon and I mounted up and we were off. It was awesome! The curves, the temperature change, the smells, the scenery, it was like sensory overload. Jon was right, there is nothing like riding in the mountains. I was still a little cautious but Jon was scraping pegs and having a blast! Like I said, Jon was an experienced rider and I was still green. We had a blast though. We rode to, Cherokee NC, and back over the mountain to Gatlinburg, again. We rode to The Lost Sea Adventure in Sweetwater TN. We rode to Harley-Davidson in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Smokey Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville. We rode some on the Appalachian Parkway. Every time we came to a tunnel Jon would hit the throttle and make it roar. We made several stops to checkout the scenery and take it all in. The weather was great and we got a lot of riding in that week. We couldn’t do The Dragon’s Tail because of a rock slide but we still got a lot of riding in and had a great time. The week came to and end and it was time to head back east and to the job. Jon was often over at the house when we were both off. We would hang out back and get a fire going in the fire pit and relax. After the Gatlinburg trip we started talking more about getting some bikes and going on some more rides. After the Gatlinburg trip I was leaning towards something with some bags to carry stuff in. My Shadow Spirit was bare and I learned quickly how nice saddle bags are. I liked the Ultra Classic LE Edition but didn’t have that kind of money. I said one day that is what I wanted to get, that was my goal July 27th 2010, Jon came over and we spent the whole day together. I had a new tv and shelf system I wanted to put up and Jon was off so he came by with his young daughter. She had to get her cast off her arm later that day so she was hanging out with us. We got the tv and shelf system up and installed and it looked pretty good, I must say. Jon took his daughter to get her cast off and dropped her off, then came back to hangout and do dinner. We sat out back and were talking about the Gatlinburg trip and decided we wanted to try to do that every April. It was a great day, getting projects done, relaxing, and reflecting on some of the stuff we had done and making plans for the future. Finally we had to call it a night. I gave Jon a hug and thanked him for all his help and he and his girlfriend left. The next day, July 28th, Jon and I both had to work. I was pulling a 2pm-10pm at my police department and Jon was working 7pm-7am at his Sheriffs office. I came home about 7 for my meal break to grab a bite and help plan something for Jon’s birthday. Jon’s birthday was on August the 2nd so we were looking at doing something that coming weekend.
I had just finished eating and went out back to see what the plans were so far. I got a call from a mutual friend looking for Laura, Jon’s girlfriend. I said yeah, she is right here we are working on plans for his birthday. I realize something was wrong so I got up and walked back inside and said I just need to get some numbers off the new tv inside. I didn’t want to alarm anyone until I knew what was going on. I was told Jon had been shot but didn’t know the severity of it at that time. I immediately called my Chief and briefed him on what I knew and requested permission to respond out of County to Jon’s Sheriff Office. Chief said to take care and keep him posted. I walked back outside and I guess my face said it all. They immediately asked what was wrong. I told his girlfriend that Jon had been shot but we didn’t have any details at this time. We took off and she hoped in my patrol car and we ran blue lights and sirens to Jon’s Sheriffs Office. Just as I pulled up in front of the Sheriff office, one of my sergeants called me on my cell and told me Jon did not make it. I pulled up and told his girlfriend to hold on while I went in to see what’s going on. The major at the Sheriff Office told me that Jon had died on scene and they were trying to notify his parents. Jon responded to a call of a mother having trouble dealing with her irate son who had been drinking. Jon spoke with the mother and then the son came out of the back room shooting, killing Jon, and later himself. He was a convicted felon with a stolen gun.

Jon-Michael Willis,
My Best Friend continued from page 45
I didn’t ride much after that. Everything seemed to change and I guess depression set in. In 2011 I was the escort officer for Jon’s parents in Washington DC where his name was added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Later that year, my marriage ended and I resigned as assistant chief, due to stress. I did the Blue Knights NC VIII Officer Memorial Ride in Winterville and Greenville each year but other than that, I didn’t ride much. I was 40 and having to start over without warning. It was a difficult time. Fast forward to 2018. Things are going pretty good. I got my retirement and VA benefits and some stability. I got remarried and was in a position to get a newer bike. An old friend of mine turned me on to a good deal on a 2011 Ultra Classic up around Jonesville. It wasn’t a LE Edition but she was nice and the deal was right for me, so I pulled the trigger. My wife, Cat and I drove up to checkout the bike and see what we could do. Everything worked out and we got the bike. My buddy, Robbie, who told me about the bike, rode it to the hotel where Cat and I were staying at and we called it a night. The next day was my first time on my new bike. Cat took my picture, we got gas, and we were off. Cat followed me in the truck and I was on the Ultra. I got on the highway, seeing the hills, on my Harley, stereo blaring, and tears started flowing down my face. All I could think about was Jon. I wish he was there with me and we were riding again. I couldn’t help but feel he was with me. It was just a flood of emotions. I was excited to have a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, proud I reached one of my goals, nervous being on a larger bike, and sad Jon wasn’t riding with me but comforted knowing he was. I have ridden more in the past twelve months than I have since 2011. It feels good getting back out there. There is a lot of truth to two wheel therapy. I added a challenge coin, I had made to honor Jon, to my fuel door so when I ride Jon is with me. I still keep in touch with Jon’s parents Mike and Hope or Pops and Mama as I call them. Jon-Michael Willis is my best friend and will never be forgotten as long as I am here.

the good news! Redeemed House Biker church Jesus Riders Have you ever thought about restoring an old motorcycle?
I am amazed with wonder about all the work, passion and time put into a project, as restoring an old bike back to its original health, strength, and beauty. You won’t see many motorcycles in a junk yard. I wonder if there is a junkyard just for motorcycles? Taking on a project, lets say, a 1959 Panhead is the bike to restore. You start to look for one “any condition” or maybe you have a set price you’re willing to spend. Once you find one, you’ll want to do some research on the vin # or maybe find out who originally owned it. Researching its history will reveal info on not only the bike but maybe even details about the owners. After taking inventory on the condition of its heath and strength; what parts are missing and which ones will need repairing, and cleaning, re-chroming and ones that need repainting, the passion begins. Guidance because of research back in history leads one to a restoration place of the original new, which is old now in the present. In Chapter 7 of second Chronicles, King Solomon dedicates the New Temple, built according to God’s plans, from a temple He designed in the yard (wilderness) in verse 11 of chapter 7 it says Solomon had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple (built new from the original one out in God’s yard) of the Lord and in Solomon’s own place, the Lord appeared to Solomon that night and says in verse 14 “If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive

their sin and will heal their land. Verse 15, Now My eyes will be open My ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. Verse 16, I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that My Name may be there forever. My eyes and My heart will always be there. Amen. This country needs restoration health and strength, parts are being removed and replaced with an empty void called sin. Removing God, prayer, church, fellowship and God’s grace to overcome sin in Christ by His Spirit alive in us, if we do this verse 20 says God will uproot and make a ridicule of this nation! A revived motorcycle needs to be restored back to from it’s original foundation the frame work that holds it all together, revival for America needs restoration to the foundation of Salvation a repentance and turn away from sin to God through the grace provided from God in Christ Jesus! Let’s ride for Christ and die to self just like Jesus, Amen.
