Editorz Notez Hope everyone reading this got to experience the solar eclipse we had on 21 August. What an amazing sight to behold! We have a great story about the eclipse of 2017 on pages 28-29 that was sent in to us by Dave Parker! In this issue we have 2 “Best of the Best” restaurant reviews. Stop by them and give them a try. They are both great restaurants with superb service and their own flare! In this issue you will find our feature, “Country Stores,” once again and it is about C.E. Barnes’ Store in Clayton, N.C. Very cool place with lots of happenings going on. “Wild Eatz”... We have had lots of requests for its return, so look for it in the next issue. Thank you all so much for your continued support! Thank you for being there with us all these years. It was a love and a passion of both Vinney’s and mine since day one. We could not have done without our biker family, readers and advertisers, brothers and sisters. As most of you know, Vinney left this cruel world on 29 Oct 17 suddenly. We made decisions concerning Behind Barz together. He was always the level headed one and kept me grounded. I am going to continue the magazine. I know he would want me to do so. I may need y’alls help from time to time. I have a dedicated section to Vinney on pages 40-41. Thank you for being his brothers and sisters in the biker world. He loved every minute of it! God Bless! Doobie

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of all the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. We enjoy meeting troops who receive our care packages, and always ask what was their favorite items. Today’s answers: toothpaste and toothbrush ( moms love to hear that! ), new socks, cooling wraps, wipes ( 2nd top answer), and of course COOKIES! We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at: ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. We need the name, address, approximate number of troops who will be served by this point of contact, and the approximate date of stopmail (we will send repeat packages). We also would like to know if there are females at that location who would like to receive girlie girl packages. We follow security guidelines and never distribute names and addresses to the public.
We love our students! Look at these cute Bags of Sunshine - she made over 200!
GREAT IDEA! Please help us by asking your churches, schools, businesses, clubs, families to create holiday goody bags for our packages. It’s easy - gather donations of small size snacks - Slim Jims, Hot Chocolate packets, individual packs of nuts, trail mix, Rice Krispy treats, snack crackers, small candy bars, small unbreakable ornaments, and cards signed with messages. Other ideas of items include lip balm and inidividual wet wipes, bandaids and small hand sanitizer. Put 6-8 treats into a sandwich bag. Keep filling up bags with goodies! We need about 60007000 more bags! Deliver or mail goody bags to our center to include in our care packges to send to our troops who are far away from home for the holidays! Including a financial donation for postage is also a huge help!
It’s always a good day to support our troops! This is one of 3 units who picked up items from our center today!
Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. Our team of volunteers works diligently to ensure our resources are wisely utilized in creating the best care packages! Thank you all of our donors who support our mission with financial donations. Postage assistance can be provided by sending a check or money order to us at the center or you can go here and purchase stamps for $5 or $10 and mail to us to use on our care packages. https://store.usps.com/store/browse/ subcategory.jsp… We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? ~ Barbara We appreciate the fantastic support of these volunteers from the US Coast Guard!
We had a great morning of work today with the help of Pitt Community College nursing students.
Our Emerald Isle ladies volunteered today (14 Oct) and filled 275 goody bags for our holiday packages!

Look at these pretty painted rocks that are going into our Christmas packages!

Shine And Wine 3rd Annual Festival
story & photos: Vinney & Doobie
This year was the 3rd Annual Chase City Shine and Wine Festival on 23 Sept. 17. What a cool event and huge success! Vinney and I had such a wonderful time at this event. We received a S&W mug and wine glass when we entered the gate. We milled around at our leisure. It was the biggest event yet, since its inception in 2015. On site were two distilleries and five wineries...all local to Virginia. There were also several vendors selling various foods from hamburgers and hotdogs, fried and BBQ to sweets, goat cheese, pimento cheese and pork skins. There were twelve other vendors including, Poparrazi, Avon, Lularoe, 31, wood working, wreaths and other crafts. There was an awesome band rocking the crowd called, The WORX, from the Lynchburg area.
A few of the Shine And Wine Festival Crew.
The turn out was really great this year and everyone is looking forward to making next year the biggest and baddest yet! Thanks to everyone for their support and participation in this year’s event! See ya at the 4th Annual Shine and Wine Festival in Chase City, VA.!
Happy S&W Festival goers!

This was a Shine & Wine Fest but beer was available... see left. Also available, water and canned drinks.

2017 YORK CITY BIKE NIGHT YORK, PENNSYLVANIA The 23rd Annual Bike Night Parade kicked off the festivities this year, leaving the York Fairgrounds at 6pm sharp as scheduled. This year’s parade had nearly 800 bikes participating and was viewed by thousands of spectators who lined the streets of York to see the wide variety of motorcycles drive by them. This year’s theme was dedicated to “Those that serve” and the Grand Marshal was ‘Uncle’ Dave Freed, a local motorcyclist involved in many local charity events that have accumulated over $400,000 for Child Life Organizations and Children’s Miracle Network over the past 20 years. He is an active member of Patriot Guard Riders, working to provide flags and escort for memorial ceremonies and funerals of our fallen heroes. Following the Grand Marshal were several theme bikes that included riders that worked for Coast Guard, EMT and Police departments. There was a number of Police Officers that did an excellent job of escorting the 28 participating Motor Maids, as a group, to the staging area at the York Fairgrounds this year. In 2006 and 2016 the Motor Maids were Grand Marshals. This year, like all other years since 2007, the Motor Maids have served as an Honor Guard in the parade. This year we had ladies from all parts of the east coast coming to parade, the furthest was from S. Carolina with 614 miles. York has embraced the Motor Maids over these years as the Motor Maids have come to love the York community and appreciate the support given. Motor Maids, founded in 1940, have been parading at motorcycle events for most of those years. Some of the first parades were to kick off the Newsies Flat Track Races in Ohio. Since then they have done the TT Races in Peoria, Illinois, Motor Cycle races in Springfield, Illinois, Sturgis, South Dakota, Laconia, New Hampshire and Indianapolis, Indiana before their races. In 2015 Motor Maids even kicked off the Motor Cycle Races held at the York Fairgrounds that year.
12
Before the parade, event attendees, bikers and non-bikers alike, enjoyed the National Anthem sung by Janell Newcomer. Following the parade, music was provided by York College Rock Band, Smokin Gunnz and Ian Carroll. Additional attractions included Comedian Pete Geist, Caricatures by Mel Conrad, Face Painting, Balloon Twists, Keystone Collective Bike & Art Show (in partnership with The Parliament Arts Organization), PennDOT’s Live Free Ride Alive tent and Harley Davidson’s JUMPSTART Rider Experience along with some new 2018 Harley-Davidson models on Continental Square. To add to the appeal, no one could go hungry due to the wide selection of foods and drinks available at local restaurants and food vendors, a large part of the Bike Night mystique. Remember when you mark your calendar for next year, and make your hotel reservations, York City Bike Night is moving to Saturday afternoon of Harley Davidson’s Open House; exact date and times TBA. The committee is working hard at making the 2018 York City Bike Night an event to remember. There are several ways to get the newest information on what is going to happen in 2018; you can check FB at /YorkCitySpecialEvents or Twitter @ YorkCityEvents or search #BikeNightYork on social media. No matter how you surf the web, we hope to see you all at Bike Night York 2018. story & photos: Sammie Wisner Motor Maids

Your Health Behind Barz Disability Disability, the word brings up images of people who can’t do. Not can’t do some things, but can’t do anything. This is not true. Just because you may not be able to do everything like everybody else does not mean you are not able to excel in areas that others cannot. Read this short list of famous people who have disabilities and see how they accomplished much to help others. These are brave people, intelligent people, people with big hearts who never gave up. Rene Kirby is an actor. Kirby used spina bifida to his advantage when he played his role in shallow Hal, he was also in “Stuck on you” with Matt Damon. Robert Hensel being an international poet and writer never let spina bifida come in the way of his artistic mind. He was awarded the title of one of the best poets of the 20th century with over 900 publications worldwide and retains the world record at Guiness and Ripley’s for the longest non-stop wheelie in a wheelchair. Hank Williams, Sr. AKA Hiram King Williams was born in 1923. He was born with a mild undiagnosed case of spina bifida occulta, a disorder of the spinal column, which gave him life long pain. Richard Dreyfuss suffers from bipolar disorder. In 2006, he appeared in Stephen Fry’s documentary, Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, in which Fry (who also has the disorder) interviewed him about his life with manic-depression. Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. There have been reports that Abraham Lincoln may have suffered from which they then called melancholia, basically being todays form of depression. Agatha Christie was considered the world’s bestselling book writer of all times only truly surpassed by the Bible and equaled by Shakespeare. Agatha suffered from dyslexia but in no way did it stop her from being creative and learning how to write. Alexander Graham Bell is known as the inventor of the telephone. Alexander was actually attempting to find a way that could make deaf people hear. His mother was slowly becoming deaf. He himself had dyslexia which would cause him problems at school, but he
Deborah Alston, RN
always kept his interest for science. He would show a great indifference for everything else and would have poor grades. Cher had dyslexia. One day, Cher decided she would quit school and take some acting lessons to do what she loved. She met Sonny at a coffee shop and together they made some great music. Hans Christian Andersen being an author of children’s fantasy stories, he was a victim of dyslexia. He wrote hundreds of children’s books. Henry Winkler who is Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the popular sitcom Happy Days found that he was dyslexic at age 31. F.D. Roosevelt - Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was the 32nd President of the United States. On vacation Roosevelt contracted an illness, at the time believed to be polio, which resulted in Roosevelt’s total and permanent paralysis from the waist down. Roosevelt refused to accept that he was permanently paralyzed. He tried a wide range of therapies, including hydrotherapy. Fitting his hips and legs with iron braces, he laboriously taught himself to walk a short distance by swiveling his torso while supporting himself with a cane. In private, he used a wheelchair, but he was careful never to be seen in it in public. In 2003, a peerreviewed study found that it was more likely that Roosevelt’s paralytic illness was actually Guillain-Barre syndrome, not poliomyelitis. He also had vision impairment. Helen Keller - was an American author, activist and lecturer. She was the first deaf/blind person to graduate from college. She is remembered as an advocate for people with disabilities. Stevie Wonder is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Blind from infancy. It is thought that he received excessive oxygen in his incubator which led to retinopathy of prematurity. Bad things will happen to us but how can we use the bad for good? Let us use our talents to encourage others, love others, be a victor in all we set our mind to. Ride safe, be an encouragement, be blessed and have a Merry Christmas and a safe New Years.

Some of our favorite eateries!
These are some of our favorite restaurant eats... and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! El Azteca Kinston, N.C. We visited El Azteca for a late lunch. Lady D met us there and Jessie, the owner, waited on us.
Jessie Britt owner of El Azteca Auth. Mexican Rest. in Kinston, N.C.
Everything we have ever eaten at El Azteca has been supurb! Their salsa is rich and made from scratch. Their chips are crisp and fresh. I could go there just for the salsa...it is so darn good!
Open 7 Days a week!
It didn’t take them long to bring out our meals. We all ordered something different. They all came to the table piping hot! We each ordered, either steak, chicken or pork. All three of us were members of the “clean plate” club that day. One of the many things that El Azteca is famous for are Jessie’s margaritas! If you love Margaritas you have got to try them when you stop in at El Azteca! El Azteca is located in Kinston just off of Hwy. 70. Easy stop on your way to the coast or while you are out cruisin’ on your motorcycle. They are open every day of the week! Jessie Britt and Victor Gonzalez are the owners and they both ride motorcycles. They loves bikers and participates in many biker events in the area. Stop by and visit El Azteca and say, “Hola”! While you are at it, enjoy a great meal and pick up a copy of Behind Barz Motorcycle Mag! Vinney & Doobie

Bobby’s Annual fish fry at Tippett’s Mill Bobby Driver fishes from July all the way through September in the mill pond right there at Tippett’s Mill. All by himself, on his time, he does this. Just so they can have a huge “fish fry” in the first week of October. Bobby told us that as he catches them he puts them in a cooler with ice, right away. When he gets home he rinses each fish really good and then puts them in the freezer. This year Bobby caught 442 fish! They fried them up outside in front of the store in a big fry vat. Tippett’s provides the corn bread and fixin’s and it is one heck of a meal!

Story of Sarah....
April’s Angels
Let me tell you a story, one that happens many times, every day, in our country, in fact it happens here more often that we care to admit. This is a story of many young ladies, not just one. The facts are combined and not specific to just one young lady. The names are changed to protect the innocent. A young lady, let us call her name Sarah, was getting ready to go to school. She says she wants to talk. She is trembling.... This young lady is beautiful, young, high school age, eager to learn of life. She is very smart, enjoys meeting people and talking. She is known for her laughter and her willingness to help another when they need help. Yet in the last few weeks she had changed, becoming very quiet, recluse, fearful to be alone, poor sleep, nightmares, she does not want to wash herself like she used to. At times she becomes angry as if she is fighting for her life in situations she had brushed off before. Something has happened but no one knows what....
April and her children.
One day as you drop Sarah off at school, Sarah, says” I want to talk, but I cannot. I have written down my feelings and a situation that happened to me. When you get the time, please read this and let me know how you feel. It is important to me to know how you feel about this.” She holds out a sealed envelope, with your name on it written in letters that are rather wiggly showing a time of tension and fear. She can not look you in the eye as she gives you the envelope. You take the envelope and assure her that you will read it. Sarah turns away, to go to school and you see her wiping a tear from her eye as her head is held down, she is ashamed. As you drive away your gut says read this now. It is important, do not delay. You drive to a fast food restaurant and get some coffee and sit in the back to have a little privacy as you read this heart wrenching letter. The letter starts out that she loves you and is very ashamed of what has happened but she wants help, needs help and does not know what to do. She is hurting in ways she has never hurt before and she does not want to hurt you or the family. She desires to keep the family together and feels her obedience to Dad is necessary to do that.
24
www.behindbarz.com
You notice dried tear stains on the letter as the ink is in the process of being washed away in areas all around. You heart begins to beat fast as you feel the sincere intensity and scream for help in what you are about to read.
Many are not believed and become addicts, prostitutes, hate men, do anything to try and make the pain go away. They may become mentally ill and need much care due to the trauma.
The heart tearing letter tells how in the last few months her Daddy has been coming to her bedroom at night and telling her she has to allow him to have sex with her. It is important for her to keep quiet, and she better not make any noise as he enjoys himself. It happens several times a week when mom is away from home or is asleep in her room. She hurts and shares of bruises on her body in areas that cannot be seen. She feels like she wants to die and wonders why does Daddy do this?????
Others just hide the facts and live with a painful secret torture the rest of their life.
The coffee is cold and the emotions begin to run hot. As your neck turn bright red the color rushes to your face and you hit the table with a fist and begin to cry. Memories of Dad getting up in the middle night as he could not sleep, hearing doors open and close, people going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.... The changes in Sarah in the last few months, the puzzle pieces begin to fit as some hidden questions come to life as to why things were different between you and your husband lately. What do you do??????? In one situation a loving mother goes back to the school and checked her daughter out. Gave her a hug and let her know how much she loved her and wanted to help. Immediately went to the Emergency Room to get a physical, file police reports, report to Social Services, call their minister and pray. Dad is arrested and faces prison time. Honesty is the key in this situation to have correct judgement go forth. Another mom just throws away the letter, does not believe what was written and when Sarah comes home beats her for telling a lie on her dad. Sarah in this situation, a few days later commits suicide as she cannot take the pain any more. One mom becomes calloused and said it is just something she must do and walks away. Nantuck We had the privilege of seeing NANTUCKET “Live” at Nash Arts in Nashville, N.C., on 29 September! What is so special about concerts at Nash Arts? The set-up is such that you almost feel as if you are on stage with the performers. It is a very intimate setting, with seats close to the stage. Every seat in the house is a great seat! NANTUCKET put on a heck of a performance. Most people stood and many danced during the concert. They totally engage their audience, include them in the singing, invite them onstage, and afterwards they had a meet and greet autograph signing session! We love NANTUCKET! Nantucket is a rock band that formed in Jacksonville, N.C., in 1969. Originally they were known as a “beach” band called Stax of Gold, then later Nantucket Sleighride, and evntually that became shortened to NANTUCKET. The original six-member group included Tommy Redd, Larry Uzzell, Mike Uzzell, Eddie Blair, Kenny Soule, and Mark Downing. Early in their career they became a huge draw in their home state of N.C. as a cover band and grew to become a powerful and tenacious sensation amassing hoards of fans across the southeastern United States well before they released their first album. The band signed with Epic Records in 1977 and released its self-titled album the following year, which featured the hit single, “Heartbreaker”. An aggressive cross-country tour followed, and Nantucket opened for top acts such as KISS, Styx, Boston, Mother’s Finest, Journey, and The Doobie Brothers. The band’s debut release was hugely successful and made the Billboard charts. The second album release was “Your Face or Mine?” and the third was a tribute to AC/DC lead singer, Bon Scott, who died in 1980, titled “Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock ‘N’ Roll)” and landed Nantucket a spot with AC/DC on its “Back in Black” tour.

Tommy Redd After nearly twenty years touring and three more successful albums, Nantucket decided to take a rest in 1989. They reunited in November 1991, recorded, and released “Still Alive After All These Years” which included a combination of some old works and new material. Never willing to die, Nantucket recently released their latest album, “You Need A Ride To Raleigh” which shows a somewhat different side of the band and the extent of their talents. This new release has a Carolina Beach Music flavor that touches on some of the band’s early roots. Still retaining the reputation as one of the most entertaining bands of all time, the band members today consist of Tommy Redd, Larry Uzzell, Mike Uzzell, Eddie Blair, Jason Patterson and Ronnie Waters. They are busy creating new material and performing close to home for the everloyal and enthusiastic Nantucket fans at various venues (mostly) throughout the southeastern United States. These guys aren’t about to stop! 2012 was a banner year for the band. Along with playing sold out shows everywhere, they were inducted into the NC Music Hall Of Fame!

the Eclipse of a lifetime story & photos: Dave Parker
Monday, 21 August 2017 Saint Matthews, SC The past two months have been extremely busy with my Son getting married, vacation, chaperoning the church youth on a mission trip then my fathers in laws surgery. All out of town for a week or more. I need a little me time and wanted to spend it on the bike. So I checked out the Eclipse and where I could view it. I wanted to combine two on my favorite things, riding my bike and camping. I discovered a little private camp ground in Saint Matthews SC named Sweet Water. It would give me 2 minutes and 35 seconds of Totality. I called and made my reservation and planned my adventure.
Left: Dinner
Above: Eclipse morning.
Left: Gary Braun and me.
I sorted through my camping gear and took only what I need for my three day trip. Camp stove, tent, sleeping bag and other essentials. Packed the bike on Saturday as I was planning to leave after church on Sunday. I wanted to get there quickly and planned a direct route down Hwy 95. The traffic was heavy, but moving. I only had to put my foot down one time on the concrete slab in SC. The camp ground is a gem. Well cared for, private lake, and not crowed. My neighbor was a big motor home from Florida. We made friends and he offed me a beer that I accepted and drank with my dinner. The next day was Eclipse day. There was an aurora of excitement around the camp. I met another motorcyclist camper from Oak Island, N.C. Nice guy riding an old gold wing. The day turned into an international event. There was a Florida Boy Scouts Troop there that brought friends from Denmark. The Boy Scout leaders were employed in the Space industry and were real rocket scientists with NASA. I was a Scout Master for years and we made friends easy. About two hours before the Eclipse a young couple pulled up into the camp ground in a Mini Cooper. She was an Astronomer and brought a special telescope to view the Sun and Eclipse. She connected to a lap top that we could view. It showed sun spots and solar flares. How cool was that!

Eclipse, where do I start. I will say it was awesome. As the moon started to cross the sun, we did not notice any affects in darkness or temperature. But as the moon had about 75 percent of the sun covered, we noticed that the sun was not as hot and it did start to get colder. It started to get dark as if you had on dark sunglasses. Kind of eerie and different. The amazing thing is the breeze stopped, the lake was perfectly calm and there were no clouds in our viewing path. Clouds were east and west, but none were overhead. As the moon completely blocked the sun, there was a small quick flash, poof, it got dark! We could see stars. The Astronomer said they were planets. There was still enough light to see without flashlight. It was like a full moon on a clear night. It was defiantly darker than normal. It happened very quickly and only lasted two and a half minutes. It was so cool to experience. The ring around the Sun was bright white. We could look at it our naked eyes without the special glasses. During the eclipse I saw 2 aircraft to my east. The clouds were behind them the light was reflecting off the aircraft body. They were glowing like a star. As the eclipse shadow covered them they disappeared just like magic. After the total Eclipse, someone pointed out the leaf shadows and how they were crescent. It was called the leaf effect or like a pinhole viewer.
Summer Summer Sizzler was a blast! We had about 60 kayaks I would guess. We just wanted to spread some positivity and collectiveness here in the community of Rocky Mount! Alot of the people were first timers and even complete strangers! The outcome was amazing! ~ Brandan Wilson photos: Jason Gupton
Overall, this experience was a GOD moment. He provided excellent weather, parted the clouds for an unobstructed view, sent an Astronomer with equipment, and provided new friends to enjoy it with. Did I say how cool is was. Now, it gets better. He closed the day out with a gorgeous sun set. The next morning I packed up and left the camp ground. I had a route in my GPS but it had me back track a few time, so I just headed north on back roads until I found a major two lane route. I stayed on it until I hit Hwy 95. I got on 95 until I hit a backup at 77 in NC. I got off and headed east on 77 and got off on route 242. I reset the gps and set it up for back roads home. Now it was working! Did I say how nice route 242 is to ride. No traffic, a few curves, and nice scenery. I went past White Lake and worked my way to Mount Olive. From there I knew the way. As I reflect upon my trip, we might be having a lot of issues in our country at the present time. But these three days away from all the crap reminded me that God is in control. We just have to step away from all the crap going on and look to him for guidance and relief. As I heard so many times form others that they have things under control, or they got this. Well God has this under control. He’s got this. Just let him handle it. Step back and just enjoy the ride.

from the
mind of big ed My Dad Fought for this country in Vietnam. He loved this country til the day he died after a fight with cancer due to Agent Orange. He told me many times that, no matter how hard life can be, at least I’m living in a country where I am free!
Big Ed aka 2Timer
I’m thankful. I just hate seeing the people of this country have so little respect for freedom...of which my dad and so many others had fought, bled, and died for. Freedom means something to me and if you are reading this, it means it something to you, as well. ‘Cause freedom is something we love dearly or we wouldn’t jump on two wheels and chase that horizon. It’s freedom of the open road. Freedom of our souls being in the wind. I know for a fact, BIKERS LOVE FREEDOM!
Hello You Happy Riders!!! I’m like you people. I sit back and watch this world unfold in social media and on the TV and in the news. I can’t help but feel my ears get red at seeing this country being torn apart. I wonder, what’s made it this bad? What has made people of this great nation so angry with each other? Me, I have my own opinions. I see a spoiled youth nation. I see young people acting the way they have their whole lives ‘cause Mommy and Daddy didn’t pull out the belt and skin some hide, or at the very least said the big “N” word. Yeah...the big “N” word. You wanna know what it is? It’s something these spoiled brats ain’t used to hearing! It’s why we the people are seeing our great country get ripped apart. ‘Cause people dont like the word...NO!
I hope we can overcome this, but it’s got to start with us. We’ve got to change our ways and show our youth what real respect is. Not what some TV actor says it is or some radical movement supporter says. Education of respect comes from home, and with the board of education to the seat of knowledge. SMACK! We’ve together let this happen. You may say, not me. But let’s be truthful. We’ve all done nothing but sit back and watch as our government has pushed us around. We’ve done nothing but sit on our thumbs when we see people disrespect our flag. We’ve done nothing every time we should have stood up and done something. Think about what freedom is folks. How much are you willing to throw away? If you say none of it. Then start standing up!
See you out there, Behind Barz.
2TIMER
NO! You are not taking down my heritage! NO! You are not burning my flag! NO! You are not about the law! NO! Your feelings don’t mean more than mine! NO! You are not running this country into the ground no more! No...it’s a simple word and you got to stand up and say it...NO!

This was the 3rd Goodguys Rod & Custom Association North Carolina Nationals at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C. Every year it gets bigger and better with so many events to participate in and so many things to see! There were hundreds of gorgeous vehicles to look at and the event covered such a large area at the fairgorunds that I rented a motorized chair. They provide these for anyone that is interested in paying by the day or hour to use them. The North Carolina Nationals was held outside and inside with vendors and exhibitors from around the country. They had a swap meet & cars for sale corral. Inside there was a historic race care exhibit. Plus, an indoor car show and Goodguys Autocross and Autocross for kids! There was also live entertainment, demolition derby, and the Winners Circle.

Vinney Byrne
I have heard so many times, “Tell the ones you care about that you love them because you might not get a chance to do so.” That statement rings in my ears every day now. It is so true. Life is short. Life is fleeting. Life is tough and demanding but it can also be meaningful, and very special. You have to remember the good, the happy, the fun times...not just one moment. That is so very hard to do when things change in an instant. They say “opposites” attract. That couldn’t be farther from the truth for me and Vinney. We always joked that we must have the same mother or father because of so many exactnesses. Not sure if that is a real word but it just fits us! When we first started dating 15 plus years ago we were inseperable. We talked on the phone for hours until one of us would fall asleep. Then we decided to “move in” together. We had the same interests. My dad and granddaddy owned country stores and Vinney was a picker. So, we jelled. We liked the same music, TV shows, and sports. He loved the color green and so do I. The most outlandish thing was that we both wore the same size pants and t-shirts. Our head size was the same. Our wrist and finger sizes were the same. Our shoe size was the same...and so, we shared clothes, hats, shoes, jewelry. We shared everything. His eye prescription was exactly the same as mine just the opposite eyes. We talked about everything. We solved all the worlds problems...or at least we thought we did. We had wonderful solutions for everything! Our political views were the same. We loved hunting rocks and fossils and sharks teeth. We loved hunting junk or “old stuff”, as he liked to call it. We loved doing everything together. Vinney taught me a lot...about a lot of things. 99% of the time he was calm and collected. He very rarely raised his voice. He always tried to calm me down and keep me grounded. That is where we differed because I get worked up easy and he didn’t. He always said things would work out or for me and to stop worrying all the time about everything. He liked helping people and would always give of his knowledge to anyone any time.
One of the most amazing things about V inney is that he almost never talked about anyone. He was not a negative person at all. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He cried easy. I loved that about him. I don’t cry so easy. But Vinney would cry while watching a TV show or movie. He was the most tender hearted person I have ever met. He loved giving me cards and I loved receiving them. He always knew what to say. He had the most beautiful handwriting. Mine, not so much. He could draw and letter like a pro. One year for Myrtle Beach Rally he took some Sharpies and lettered our jeans. Everything on them had a meaning to us. I still have them and they mean the world to me now. When I was battling cancer he was right there with me. As much as he hated hospitals he would stay with me and give my mom a break. He waited on me hand and foot when I got out of the hospital. After wich we split for a time. Except for this, we very rarely spent a day apart. We still talked and he still sent me cards. Then we were back together again. Cancer is tough on the patient and even tougher on the caregiver. It is very rare or in most cases, NEVER, that you meet your twin or soul mate, fall in love and share everything together. We did. I am so greatful that we had the few years with each other that we did. Every hour of every day since he passed has been hard. Everything around me reminds me of him. Everything I do. Everywhere I go. BUT I know I will see Vinney again, some day. For now, I talk to him all the time...at home or riding down the road. I tell God every night to tell him, “Hey”, for me and that I miss him dearly. We will forever be attached at the hip. Vinney and I met because of motorcycles and we have met so many brothers and sisters along the way because of motorcycles. He loved each and every one of you he met through the years. I am a better person because I was so very blessed to have met him. God Speed to you Vinney. Until we meet again.

Reminiscence of war
11 November 2017
History of Veterans Day World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
Armistice Day became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Country Stores Sykes Groc. Westry Crossing Circa 1968.
great destinations in their own right Country stores have long been a mainstay in America but they are a dying breed...and they are dying fast! I grew up in a country store. My granddaddy owned one before I was born (at Westry Crossing) and my dad owned one until I was in high school (at Taylor’s Cross Roads). Both in Nash County, N.C. It helped mold me into who I am today! Pictured left: My Granddaddy’s store, Sykes Groc. Doobie
C.E. Barnes Store in Archer Lodge, N.C., opened in January of 1927. It has been a staple in the community for 90 years! Josh Barnes now runs the store just as his greatgrandfather, grandfather and his father have done. But Josh has put a twist on C.E. Barnes Store. He sells products from local vendors, and almost all of his products are North Carolina made or grown products. He has peanuts, jams, popcorn and honey made mostly in Eastern North Carolina. There are t-shirts and hats made here in North Carolina, also. Josh has added events to the C.E. Barnes list of changes. They have wine tastings, micro beer and bourbon tastings and food truck and parking lot parties. There is something going on almost every weekend at C.E. Barnes Store! One of the things that makes the store unique is the fact that they have kept their decor just as it was. There are still old drink boxes and nab jars and display counters. In one section, old photos and newspaper clippings adorn the walls from way back when. It is like stepping back in time. You get a sense of what it was like to shop there over fifty years ago.

Josh Barnes, fourth generation heir to C. E. Barnes Store, started working at the store when he was about 15. After graduating from N.C. State University in 2004 he started working full time. Stop in for a bit of nostalga and check out their Facebook page for upcoming events. Located at 13726 Buffalo Rd. in Clayton.

C.E. Barnes was founded in 1927 by two brothers, Ottis Barnes and Weldon Barnes and still stands today as a Great Destination.

Johnny Ray’s Signature Sauces
If you use Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram or even Pinterest then you should have seen the many posts we have made about Johnny Ray’s. We love all the Johnny Ray’s sauces and have tried them on just about everything! We have grilled chicken breasts with Johnny Ray’s sauces, baked chicken quarters, simmered crockpot pork chops, baked toaster oven shrimp, and grilled steaks with Johnny Ray’s lathered all over them! We have used JRSS on our french fries, on cheeseburgers, and on deli sandwiches. Even on a plain ol’ biscuit! Next test will be in homemade meatloaf, yum! Johnny Ray’s hasn’t failed us yet! We have loved it every way we have tried it!
Great If you haven’t already, give them a try. You’ll be glad ya did. In the mean time, check out their website: www.thesaucelife or look them up on Facebook for new recipes, sauces, events, news, and just to see all the ways they use Johnny ray’s Signature Sauces! Below is a personal recipe of Johnny Ray’s. He was kind enough to send it over to us. Give it a try or come up with your own recipes and let us or Johnny Ray’s know all about it!
Johnny Ray’s is a local product...Small batch, grilling & BBQ sauces. Handcrafted right here in North Carolina in a little town by the name of Mount Holly. Located just west of Charlotte in Gaston County. Don’t live in the western part of NC? ...Don’t fret! You don’t have to drive all the way to Gaston County! You can find Johnny Ray’s Signature Sauces at most Food Lion grocery stores, Lowe’s Foods stores and a variety of specialty stores throughout NC. Check their website for a store and city near you.
Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin Medallions ~ Cut fresh pork tenderloin into 1"- 1 1/2" cubes ~ Season well with your favorite spice Blend ~ Wrap a half strip of Bacon on each cube and put on a skewer. Cook on the grill, in the oven or in the smoker until internal temp reaches 165 degrees. Brush Johnny Ray's Signature Sauces onto the meat and allow the sauce to caramelize and get nice and sticky! Enjoy the tenderness, the salty and the delicious sauces as they create an amazing flavor explosion! Serve with seasonal veggies from the grill! Enjoy!

FARM SHOP ART
JD is the owner, artist, master craftsman and brain behind, Farm Shop Art! JD made us 4 different killer items that we just love! The motorcycle was a surprise and it is sitting in my living room right now! "Farm Shop Art is literally a small startup business in a farm shop in Nash County, NC. It’s not full time yet, I wish it was, but I work a real job too. FSA started when my wife showed me a picture on Pinterest of a dragonfly made of forks, knives and spoons. She said, “Can you make this?”, I said, “Probably.” So off to the farm shop I went. I had a welder, why not give it a shot, well it turned out better than I thought, she loved it, my mom loved it, their friends loved it, they all wanted one…”Hmmmmm, I wonder if they will PAY for one?”, they would, they did, what else could I make.
You will see us on the road with this one!
As I said this is a real farm shop, we don’t farm full-time anymore since my dad passed away a few years ago, we did farm Coastal Bermuda; hay in layman’s terms. There are no balers, tedders or cutters left to repair, but I still have a welder, a torch, grinders, tools, junk, lots of junk and a shop. So, that’s where I started, re-purposing the tools that once kept a farm operating into tools to grow a small business, I hope to keep it growing just like the hay on the farm did, year after year…. This is not mass produced, machine stamped, robot welded and polished by someone in a foreign country, for mass consumption out of mail-order catalog. This is a local business in Nash County producing hand - made lawn and garden art, one-of-a-kind Up-Cycled metal sculptures and other creations.
You will not find a more well built coat, hat, scarf, helmet rack anywhere!
This handmade is MADE IN THE USA one-of-kind, folk art style of Re-Funked Junk and FUN!" Please check out JD’s page on Facebook. He also has items at local shops in the area. If you like metal, contact JD for a very unique and killer Christmas gift! Valentine’s Day is also around the corner. He also creates items from your ideas or if you have seen something you would like or just want something nobody else has, give JD a call: 252-903-0793 or message him on Facebook! He can create seasonal items, too!
Who doesn’t have or want a “mancave”? Perfect for your special room in the house or the garage!

Iconic Baja California, surrounded by the pounding Pacific Ocean and crystal calm Sea of Cortez, is an isolated and proud land woven together by ancient myths, legends and amazing true stories. Biker author Zoë Cano captures the spirit of this beautiful, awe-inspiring and intriguing place on a solo 3,000-mile adventure ‘on the roads less travelled’, encountering a myriad of surprises along the way. The landscapes are extreme, sometimes unforgiving, but always spellbinding; rich fertile valleys merge into arid cacti-strewn deserts, mountains melt into forests, and the wildest beaches and bays are home to the richest diversity of marine life. Reflecting life out on the road, Zoë also digs up a treasure trove of her other travel story gems and cleverly intertwines them with this story. This is the latest of her excellent travel books, following on from Bonneville Go or Bust and Southern Escapades, and like the previous two it just makes you want to get out there and explore. Warning – reading this book will bring on your wanderlust! Chilli, Skulls & Tequila by Zoë Cano is on sale now from all good bookshops or direct from the author at: www.zoecano.com
We have known carol for a few years and she lives right here in N.C. This book is such an interesting read that we wanted to share it with y’all. Some low-frequency sounds—such as noise from storms or truck engines—can make you feel dizzy and nauseated. An index finger’s light touch can stop people from losing balance. You are more prone to trip when you think someone is watching you. A breakthrough in improving balance as we age might just come through the study of the Achilles tendon. These and other surprising and useful nuggets of information can be found in this lively, 360 - degree exploration of our body’s most intricate, overlooked sense—balance. Readers follow award - winning science and health writer Carol Svec through various facilities as she talks with leading scientists doing state-of-theart balance research. She showcases the coolest gadgets. Along the way she cites case studies of people whose lives are affected by balance dysfunction; explains how balance research is being applied today to help those who are ill, elderly, disabled, or simply prone to motion sickness; and provides a glimpse at what ingenious, potentially life-changing advances may be coming down the road. Whether you have a balance disorder or care about someone who does, are an athlete or performer whose livelihood depends on balance, or just love accessible, page - turning popular science, you’ll be enlightened and entertained by this appreciation of our complex super-sense. You can find this book at Barnes & Noble and on Google Play.

I met the Teutuls back in 2003 at the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota. Paul Jr. has been in Behind Barz Mag a few times. We have all seen the show, American Chopper. You either loved it or hated it. This book offers an inside view or behind the scenes look into Paul Jr.’s life. The Build reveals the “behind the scenes” story of the popular TV reality series American Chopper for the show’s millions of fans. Author Paul Teutul, Jr., is arguably the most creative builder of custom “chopper” motorcycles in the world. His talents were revealed to millions of TV viewers worldwide on American Chopper, as well as later on a spinoff series, American Chopper Senior vs Junior. The Build gives the reader at Paul Jr.’s life behind the camera, which included volcanic conflict with his father and business mentor, Paul Sr. Using his own story of improbable success as an illustration, Paul Jr. offers insights on how anyone can find and activate often hidden talents. In a charming, often humorous way, The Build is a rallying cry to unleash God-designed creativity and live life to the fullest. I love that Paul Teutul shares his life (a very rough upbringing), and about how his faith has helped him overcome obstacles in his life. The story is not only entertaining but inspiring. Even if you did not care for the show...or even if you did, I think you would enjoy this book. You can find it at most stores, Target, WalMart, Barnes & Noble, etc.

LIDCAM If you wear a ball cap...or any hat with a brim then this camera would be perfect for you! This is one of the coolest HighDefinition cameras that I have seen lately! It records in 1080p and has 8X digital zoom. It has a 60 degree rotating lens. It is simple and easy! Great if you ride a motorcycle or hunt because most folks wear a ball cap when doing either. Another great thing about this camera is that it has a date and time stamped video. The battery lasts up to 3 hours! That’s better than any other small camera. It also records up to 8 hours. Another great feature is high quality audio that reduces wind noise. I highly recommend this camera for hands free use! Check out their website at: www.LIDCAM.com
