OCTOBER 2nd - 8th Myrtle Beach, SC
Editorz Notez Hope everyone reading this got to experience the solar eclipse we had on 21 August. What an amazing sight to behold! Will any of us be around to see the next one or the one after? Life is short. Cliché but still very true. Time is relative and in the grand scheme of things our time here on earth is very minute! So, why sweat the small stuff? Why be offended by every thing that moves, every word spoken and simply the sheer site of a monument? Some say that they are a reminder of a horrific past. Can’t most anything be a reminder of something bad? Since when did our great land become a place of dishonor? ...of unadulterated mahem? We are so much better than that! Stop feeding off of the main stream media that keeps telling you to be offended. There is so much more out there to be mad about than a monument! Be mad about the abortion clinics killing thousands of babies a year! Be mad about the number of murders and crimes being committed every day all across this country. Be mad about the billions of dollars pouring into cancer research and no cure has been found. T hen, after you get mad about real life, try to come up with a solution to all the real problems. Get out there and make a difference! Tearing something down is not the answer. This issue is filled to the gills again! Next issue we will have a our feature, “Country Stores,” once again and it will be about C.E. Barnes’ Store in Clayton. Very cool place with lots of happenings going on. They have tastings, live music and a lot of the things you would find in a country store way back when. We are also bringing back our feature, “Wild Eatz.” We have had requests for it, so look for it in the next issue. Thank you all so much for your continued support! Thank you to all of our advertisers for making this magazine possible! Please let them know you saw their ad here on these pages!!! Because of them BB Mag is a Doobie Fah-Ree publication! God Bless! nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of all the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. We enjoy meeting troops who receive our care packages, and always ask what was their favorite items. Today’s answers: toothpaste and toothbrush ( moms love to hear that! ), new socks, cooling wraps, wipes ( 2nd top answer), and of course COOKIES! We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at: ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page. We need the name, address, approximate number of troops who will be served by this point of contact, and the approximate date of stopmail (we will send repeat packages). We also would like to know if there are females at that location who would like to receive girlie girl packages. We follow security guidelines and never distribute names and addresses to the public.
These Helping Hands worked with a group of neighbors and friends to gather these donations and make all these bags of Sunshine for our troops. They also held a lemonade stand and earned $202 to help with postage! What an amazing group of children. And a big salute to the families who guide and support them!
GREAT IDEA! This is a great project for bike clubs, families, riding groups, etc. We invite you to make goody bags to send to our troops. Items still needed: Lip balm, Sunscreen sticks, small travel size bottles of foot powder, Slim Jims, Lemonade flavored powdered drink mixes to add to bottled water, Lemon drops, Juicy Fruit chewing gum. Buy cards or make some from scratch! Then write a short message, such as, “Thank You” or include words of encouragement. You can pack several items in a sandwich bag. You can even mail blank cards for them to send back to their loved ones. Include a few stamps for our troops to mail their cards.
Our volunteers showing their Patriotism! Kaitlyn (on the right) has made over 770 cards in the past month to send to our troops! NC National Guard is proud of these NCNG kids!
Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. Our team of volunteers works diligently to ensure our resources are wisely utilized in creating the best care packages! Thank you all of our donors who support our mission with financial donations. Postage assistance can be provided by sending a check or money order to us at the center or you can go here and purchase stamps for $5 or $10 and mail to us to use on our care packages. https://store.usps.com/store/browse/ subcategory.jsp… We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? ~ Barbara
We enjoyed working with these troops recently!
Deliver or mail goody bags to our center to include in our care packages. Thank you for remembering our troops! This fantastic group of volunteers packed 35 care packages today, prepared and bagged donations, along with enjoying much laughter! Judy and the Gals from the beach brought 450 cooling wraps, donated with the Cape Fear Sewing Guild.

Big thank you to Oakmont Baptist Church VBS for supporting our troops with goody bags!

Scotland Neck, N.C. This year was the 2nd Annual Birds & Brews at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. We were very excited to attend! Several members of the Behind Barz Crew were at this event. We look forward to this event now EVERY year! It was a hot 24th of June...a very steamy, sticky, humid evening! Not out of the norm for North Carolina. So, it was very refreshing to be able to sample the various micro brews that were present for this event. They were all very cold, very tasty and our collectible Birds & Brews cup stayed full with our unlimited samples! We walked around the park and visited with the birds as we tasted the local brews and listened to the live music by the Martin County Ramblers. It was such a fun time hanging with friends, meeting new ones, sipping local craft beers, listening to MC Ramblers and hanging with the birds! What more could you ask for? Well, they also had two food trucks on site and after walking around for a while we visited them... Wingski’s and So Good Pupusas. And, yes! They were both, oh so good! Breweries on hand for the event: Uptown Brewing Company from Greenville, N.C. Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery from Farmville, N.C. Trollingwood Brewery from Greenville, N.C. Lassiter Distilling from Knightdale, N.C. Tarboro Brewing Company from Tarboro, N.C. Carolina Eagle Distributing from Rocky Mount, N.C. Fishing Creek Cider Co. from Whitakers, N.C.
One of the local residents.
Moe, Labecka and Emma toasting a cold one.
We really enjoyed all of the samples and we tried them all! Duck-Rabbit was the first brewery that we toured and reviewed way back in 2011 for the Jan-Feb 2012 issue of Behind Barz. The owner, Paul and his mom, were so nice to us that day. They started our love for local crafted brews!

The evening was great! A rain storm came up during the last 45 minutes or so of the event. Caused most folks to run for cover. A few die hards stood in the rain for a time. It actually felt really nice after the heat of the day. Thanks to Sylvan Heights Bird Park for hosting this event and the breweries and distilleries that came out to share their masterpieces with us. It is nice meeting the faces and personalities behind the creative brews. Where else can you get the best of birds and brews in one place? There is no other place like Sylvan Heights! This event is always so much fun. It is very well planned and thought out and it is for a great cause! Proceeds support the conservation and education programs at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Sylvan Heights Bird Park is home to the world’s largest and most biologically significant collection of waterfowl, along with many other bird species. The Park also provides a natural wetlands habitat for local wildlife. Sylvan Heights Bird Park opened in 2006, and now receives more than 40,000 visitors each year.

wateree loop ride
SC Motor Maids Lake Wateree Loop Ride Saturday, June 17, 2017 Living in Myrtle Beach all my adult life means flat and straight roads for the most part, so I planned a route around Lake Wateree hoping for a variety of road conditions to make it a fun ride on our beloved motorcycles. The route I planned around the lake looks like fun, doesn’t it? At the Hot Spot in Gresham, SC on HWY 378, my husband and I met up with Izzy and MacKy, a unique pair of ladies who happen to be the only mother and daughter riders in the SC District of Motor Maids. We head out on 378 and use back roads only on this route. We took Hwy 341 to Hwy 34 to get to Camden for this part of the trip. I was leading, then MacKy and Izzy at the end, and I had 5 pages of Mapquest directions because I do not have a GPS. I asked my husband to read some directions to me and guess what happened… One page of directions blew away out of his hands, then another, and another; all 5 pages! I yelled at him for letting them go. They each blew straight up in the air. When I got to a spot where I could pull over the other ladies were laughing so hard I couldn’t be mad anymore.
12
When we arrived at Mason’s at Beaver Creek in Camden, there were 2 more Motor Maids there. The restaurant was not busy at all and our food was delicious and quick. We laughed and talked for more than an hour before heading out to loop around the lake. We stopped at an old store for pics and then again at Great Falls Dam. There were ominous clouds but that just kept us cool. Twice when we stopped for gas or bathroom it rained when were under shelter to pump gas. We waited a few minutes and it was dry again. The roads were fantastic, with hills and plenty of road signs to warn drivers of the curvy roads ahead. That’s a bikers’ favorite sign! After our tour around the lake, Connie took us to a Hwy 55 Ice Cream place she knew about. We enjoyed our ice cream and each other’s company.

your Health Behind Barz
The Vitamin C Story In a doctor’s report the following was entered:
BB Gear Get You SOME
“On 20th May, 1747, I took twelve patients in the scurvy ...Their cases were as similar as I could have them,” begins Dr. Lind’s report. His conclusions showed “that the most sudden, and visible good effects were perceived from the use of the oranges and lemons; of those who had taken them being at the end of the six days fit for duty.” Did the medical world of his day rejoice? No. Rather, the idea that diet causes scurvy was scorned and repudiated. Did not the crews of some ships drink lemon juice and still have scurvy? Unfortunately, this was true, but they had boiled the lemon juice, destroying what we now know as vitamin C. Forty–seven years later, the British Admiralty allowed Dr. Lind to repeat his experiment. A whole fleet of ships was supplied with enough raw lemon juice for a twenty– three–week voyage. The results were so spectacular that a year later, in 1795, lemon juice (later replaced by lime juice) was made part of the regulation diet of British seamen. Scurvy was no longer “master of the waves,” and even today British sailors are nicknamed “limeys”! By the early 1900’s several teams of scientists were “hot on the trail” of the mysterious anti–scurvy substance. In 1931, a concentrate was made from lemon juice that was 20,000 times as potent as the original juice! Now came an intensive effort to discern what was the exact nature of this vital compound. Once its molecular “chain” or structure was determined, it could be synthesized and mass–produced. And so it happened that by 1935 vitamin C (also properly named ascorbic acid ) became the first “pure” vitamin made available to the public through large–scale production. But more than a vitamin was discovered in the search of a cure for scurvy. Man learned that illness is not always caused by the attack of some infection or bacteria. It is sometimes caused by a deficiency in diet. This is not an article to encourage the use of Vitamin C, just to show you how things sometimes happen and we can learn about good health, nutrition and wellness. If you want to take Vitamin C or any other vitamin, talk to your doctor. If you are concerned about your diet speak with a nutritionist they can be very creative in helping you choose good things to eat. Ride safe, be healthy, be blessed.

Some of our favorite eateries!
These are some of our favorite restaurant eats... and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! The Classic Diner Tarboro, N.C. We visited The Classic Diner on “Steak Night”. It was also a live music night with Sharon Hackney. She belted out the hits from days gone by...a little country and little bit of rock & roll! It was such a fun evening! Sharon really put on a heck of a show and is a very talented singer! We enjoyed the live entertainment as we waited for our food to be brought out to us and as we dined. It didn’t take them long to bring out our meal. Our steaks were cooked just right, the potatoes were piping hot and the salads were a great compliment to the meal!
The owner of The Classic Diner, Bud Woolard, pictured here with Sharon Hackney.
The Classic Diner is nestled in downtown Tarboro not far from the Tar River. Tarboro is a beautiful historic area with many things to see and do. Also, lots of shops that are within walking distance. The Classic Diner was founded in 2010 and has a nostalgic atmosphere with great photos and decor from the past. They serve breakfast, lunch and supper every day except Sunday. Every time we have been the restaurant was packed! Bud Woolard and his wife, Shirley, are the owners and they both ride motorcycles. They loves bikers and participates in many biker events in the area. Stop by and visit The Classic Diner and say, “Hi”! While you are at it, enjoy a great meal and pick up a copy of Behind Barz Motorcycle Mag! Vinney & Doobie

WATCH OUT!
SMITH & BROWN ARE HITTING TOWN! Australian singer-songwriter Kim Smith has done it again. Smith & Brown, the second single from her debut CD 'Thunder Run', might just be the catchiest, cheekiest, toe-tapping song of 2017! The song was written in dedication to Sammy Brown, a close family friend who helped Kim master the art of cheekiness. A country boy who earned his way by cutting railway sleepers on a remote property in outback Australia, Sammy Brown didn't mind a good tune & could often be found dancing in the paddocks. “Sammy Brown & his family loved music, and were a great influence on my music career,” says Kim. “I remember him teaching me to drive trucks in paddocks during my childhood, music blaring and the constant flow of laughter. It was always great fun.” Laughing while reminiscing, Kim says, “Sammy & his family were so rowdy and cheeky! They’d always be doing silly things and getting up to mischief. Sammy didn’t care. Making sure those around him were happy and having fun was his priority.”
20
"If Sammy were here today, he would be dancing through town to this song, not giving a damn what the locals thought. I can picture it so clearly." "I wanted to do a silly, fun & cheeky clip for the song, and I think I've achieved that. It's one of those clips that all ages can enjoy, just like the song." The Smith & Brown clip can be viewed on the Kim Smith website at: www.kimsmithrockmusic.com.au/ video & can be purhased at: https://itunes.apple. com/au/album/thunder-run-ep/id1227816942 THUNDER RUN EP was recorded and mixed at MusicPro studios by producer Paul-I and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. SMITH & BROWN will be released on Aug. 4, 2017. For more information visit: www.kimsmithrockmusic.com.au

Wilson with his dad, Jeff Ellis.
Owner, Jeff Ellis, and his son, Wilson, strive to give their customers the very best experience and food possible! Many times one of the two of them are doing the cooking. They serve several seafood items, as well as, chicken breast and pork chops. They also have a smaller portion menu for kids or those eating lite. Everyone is so friendly at Ribeyes! Our server for the evening was Thomas. He was very attentive and made sure everything was just the way we wanted it and kept our glasses full. I had the Surf & Turf...petite Ribeye steak and skewer of grilled shrimp. It was served with their house made signature cocktail sauce and came with a baked potato, texas toast and the endless salad bar! Vinney had the grilled boneless pork chops and veggies. My steak was cooked just like I asked and was very tender. The shrimp were gr illed to perfection. Our meal was very enjoyable Stop by for an unforgettable meal or great drinks in the bar or both! Family Day
at CycleMax
Sunday, May 21st, 2017 CycleMax Wilson, NC If you haven't made a Community Family & Friends Fun Day at CycleMax in Wilson, you don't know what you're missing. We arrived just in time to see the Stunt Army whipping their bikes around the parking lot in an amazing display of wheelies, stoppies, drifting and burnouts. How those two stunt professionals managed to not crash or smack into each other was simply amazing! When team Stunt Army took a break, young Mr. Dylan Woolard from Washington, N.C., wowed the crowd with his amazing sense of balance as he rode his little red Honda motorcycle around on the back wheel. Next to CycleMax is a large field which held a bandstand with a DJ and at times a live band. There were plenty of vendors selling bike related gear, various foods, and we saw some inflatable 'fun houses' for the children. The Wilson Fire and Rescue Dept. had Engine 3 on site for everyone to admire. A big salute to Wilson's bravest! CycleMax supports their community and customers by providing great family days like this, and we want to thank the staff and crew who gave up their Sunday to be there. We are looking forward to the next one!

from the
mind of big ed Shoot, I bet you couldn’t drag a youngin’ out the house now by their big toe with a game controller cord dangling behind them in this summer time heat. Kids now days are soft. All pussified, but don’t mind spending your hard earn money tho, as they lounge away at some swimming pool with a bottle water and a set of ear buds in their head and not a care in the world of where the money comes from and how hard you had to work for it.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
That’s one of the many reasons this country has gone to hell in a gas truck! You got illegals coming in by the bus loads to do jobs we Americans feel it’s below us to do. All the while the illegals ain’t paying no taxes on that hard earn money and having babies like fleas on a blue tick hound as we flip the bill with our hard earned money.
Hello You Happy Riders!!! I want to speak to the cage dwellers for a second. You know, the folks that don’t know life on two wheels. Do I got your attention? Good! Have you guys ever wanted to know what riding a bike in 97 degree weather feels like? Well, roll yer windows up, and flip your switch in side your car from A/C to HEAT and the turn the fan to full blast! That’s pretty close , maybe closer if you can grab up a few June bugs and get someone with a sling shot and have them unload a few to your face. Does that sound like fun? If you said, No...Well you’er a puss! If you said, yea...Then you might have it in ya to be a biker yet. Damn y’all, it’s been hot!!! The kinda hot that when you been croppin’ baccor like we used to do back in the day, and see the boss mans farm truck come rolling up full of dust. You were so happy to see that cooler full of ice and can drink tops and bottoms. Sure enough, I’d reach right on down to where your fingers would almost burn from the cold watered down ice and grab me a drink from the bottom. That drink wouldn’t last two seconds and I’d grab me another one to sip on. Today’s kids know nothing of that kinda work. That’s how you did it back in the day if you wanted money during the summer.
30
Y’all, that shat ain’t right! It ain’t! Cause they’re over here jumping on the wagon eating up the Medicaid and food stamps while my poor little shopping cart at the piggly wiggly has a ton of open space in it while theirs you couldn’t cram a slippery Slim Jim in it. How is today’s generation of kids going to know what hard work is, if we keep letting them take the easy road? You got to teach them appreciation. You got to teach them what’s it like to sweat and give the boss 100%. Then when they get a good job, “ if there’s such a thing” they’ll appreciate what it’s like to work in a place that’s cool. Oh but wait... There ain’t many jobs like that cause tobacco is bad and some folks sued the big tobacco companies cause they blame the tobacco companies for putting that gun to their heads to smoke. Uh oh.. I said the “g” word. I can almost hear the trampling feet of thousands of lawyers ready to bust down my door cause I said G U N. Well, let’s save that one for another time. Right now even tho America is so screwed up with offended folks that are offended with other offended folks that it won’t be long before you can marry your dog or cat. Either way, this country is still far better off then being anywhere else. So, with that in mind, go outside and feel that summer time burn as you fire up them cylinders and inhale that hint of exhaust. Put on your shades and that bobble head helmet and let the wind be your friend as you put a few dotted lines behind you and be thankful that we live on a land where there is still some God fearing folks out there still remember this is the land of the free and home of the brave. 2TIMER See you out there, Behind Barz.

Ride For Fallen brothers story by: Lady D
Brothers of the inferno
Goldsboro, NC Brothers of the Inferno North Carolina Firefighters M/C held its 2nd Annual Fallen Firefighter Ride. They rode From Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC to the Throughfare VFD, the Arrington VFD and back to Wayne Community College. Firefighters and civilians, brothers and sisters joined together to honor many on this day. This ride was held in remembrance for the fallen firefighters in our state. All of the funds raised are given to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation in North Carolina to assist Fallen Firefighters families in times of need. Those especially honored on this ride were Sidney Jones Firefighter Throughfare VFD, Robert Blizzard Firefighter Arrington VFD and Goldsboro City Fire Department, and Carol Taylor Firefighter Goldsboro City Fire Department. These brave men gave their all in time of emergency. These dedicated firefighters assist us in dire times of trial and danger. halls, climb to the top of a building while flames kiss their boots, save lives, deliver babies, protect our homes, animals, while watching each other’s backs with communication, water and oxygen. They man the canoes that have saved people in time of flooding, waded through water thigh high to bring pets to safety, help the disabled to safety, go down rugged roads to rescue people in overturned vehicles.... The many acts of service that they give goes on and on. A team of people dedicated to their community with hearts, souls and love. So dedicated are they that some have passed on in their desire to help others live. These dedicated men and women encourage one another as often the Volunteer Firefighters are forgotten until needed. But, in times of emergency they will respond with great respect and give their all. When you see your Volunteer Firefighters off duty, shake their hand, show respect, give thanks to them for all they do for you and me. Ride safe, ride hard, ride on Brothers of the Inferno M/C of North Carolina. Salute.

1st Annual
South Central Bike Fest
CHASE CITY, VA First Annual South Central Bike Fest – Success! The first annual South Central Bike Fest held June 8, 9, & 10, 2017 at the Chase City Fire Department Training Grounds was a success according to the feedback received from numerous volunteers and participants. This event was held in support of local cancer victims by raising funds for the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association and the Barksdale Cancer Foundation located in Charlotte County. Both of these organizations provide monetary help to individuals dealing with cancer in both counties. It was a busy three days! Campers started arriving Thursday afternoon. The town came together to provide a family friendly event on Thursday, with the Chase City Chamber of Commerce hosting a BBQ Plate Dinner. Friday brought out local classic cars for the Cruise In, topped off by entertainment from the Konnection Band. Saturday’s events included a Poker Run, Bike Show, Raffle Drawing, Bike Rodeo, Bikini Bike Wash, Vendors, and social time. There was music provided throughout the event by Karoke Kat (Brad Weaver & Wildthang). DJ Soundhouse MC’d & DJ’d Saturday afternoon. The C. J . Ballard Band took the stage later to start the evening of fun and dancing, followed by Tuesdays Gone to close down the affair.
Bike Show winner, Tony, from Norlina, N.C.
Without the support of numerous sponsors, volunteers and participants, this first event would not have been successful. The Chase City Fire Department generously returned the payment for the use of the training grounds in support of the cause. All the hard work and support paid off, resulting in a sizeable donation to both organizations. Planning has already started for the 2nd Annual South Central Bike Fest. The planning committee learned a lot from this first event, and welcomes anyone who’s interested in helping next year to reach out by emailing info@scbfest.org. We want to extend sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who lent their support. Mark your calendars for June 7, 8, & 9, 2018 - we’ll see you there!

South Dakota MotorMaids
BEHI story & photo: Ann H.
Rapid City, SD ~ Aug 8, 2017 A group of local women motorcycle riders revived an old tradition. For many years the Motor Maids from around the US and Canada would ride to Sturgis and parade the flags before the start of the racing events. Recently the club has had a growth in local members and for the first time in at least a decade the Motor Maids carried the flags at the Aug. 8th AMA Pro Half-Mile Flat Track race held at Black Hills Speedway. Six Riders from the ND/ SD district were joined by Motor Maids from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Colorado who were in the area for the 77th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races.

June JAMR
Raleigh, N.C.
On June 10, 2017 the third annual June JAMR (Jerry’s Annual Memorial Ride) rolled to life once again. Blessed with beautiful, sunny weather, we welcomed riders for registration at Ray Price HarleyDavidson of Raleigh, NC, early morning. Our team showered riders with bike towels donated by sponsor Gary Poole Motorcycle Accident Attorney, and swag bags donated by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. Our turn out was superb, yet our objective is to increase our rider participation annually. Please spread the word of our great ride, saddling up for Sarcoidosis awareness, always the second Saturday of each June! We hope many more of you will join us next year. A non-profit volunteer organization, our mission is to produce an annual motorcycle riding event in the memory of the late Jerry Grimes of Goldsboro, NC. In addition to honoring Jerry’s life and love for motorcycles – our objectives are to raise charitable funds for the local community, increase awareness, and further research of Sarcoidosis, an inflammatory organ tissue disease that led to Jerry’s passing in 2014. This year, in addition to proceeds going to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) and Faith FWB Church of Goldsboro (Jerry’s home church), JAMR board members ear marked the ARR-Mac Water Response Team of the Wayne County area (Jerry’s home) for their stellar efforts year round and especially in the wake of Hurricane Matthew last October.

In addition to the ride, we hosted our first silent auction, which enhanced our annual fundraising and found homes for some great donated items with happy bidders. We also announced the winners of our big item raffle, which had been underway since early in the year. This too, was a first for the JAMR and a huge success! A $100 cash prize, won by Dan Bailey, was happily donated back to the JAMR. A Remington pump shot gun was claimed by Jean Paul Foisey. The grand prize, a Yamaha Inverter Series Generator was claimed by Todd Spratt, a multi-year participant and supporter of the June JAMR! Other fundraising opportunities included a 50/50 raffle (again, the winner, Mr. Steve T., returned the loot to the JAMR cause). Handmade bracelets and JAMR t-shirts were also available for purchase.

for Sarcoidosis Awareness 2017
The June JAMR was underway with kick stands up at 10 am. A mostly escorted event, thanks to multiple law enforcement agencies over a five county wide radius, our first stop was at Ron’s Barn BBQ & Seafood in Coats, NC. There, Mr. Tim O’Connell emceed our lunch with door prizes (donated by sponsors Ray Price Harley-Davidson of Raleigh, Fun Products of Goldsboro, Farm Bureau of Mt. Olive, and Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen), sponsorship recognition, volunteer recognition, and information related to Sarcoidosis. Troy Grimes, co-founder of the June JAMR spoke and recognized special dedicated volunteers Tony Glemming and Christine Gavrelos for their unending support at EVERY JAMR event and fundraising opportunity this year, as well as past year participants, who had been at every June JAMR event to date, including the initial Poker Run in May of 2014 in honor of Jerry, before his passing. Lunch, as usual, was a phenomenal hit and raved over by everyone. Nothing beats BBQ and fried chicken done right!
Troy led a brief memorial service for Jerry near the desk he had worked at for nearly 17 years. Past year memorials had been held at Jerry’s graveside, but board members elected to hold the memorial part of the ride at Fun Products this year, so Jerry’s work family would be able to participate. The last leg of the ride brought us to Cycle Max in Wilson, where we had a few final door prizes, donated by Cycle Max and announced the winner of our 50/50 drawing. Though everyone did not make it to the final stop, electing to bow out early, there was still a good representation of our starting line, and we all enjoyed end of day conversation and laughs.
The second stop of the ride was a new stop, Heidi’s Two Wheel Café in Smithfield. A brief opportunity to refresh and relieve was afforded here, while Heidi’s bar staff served up ice cold refreshments! Much appreciation to Heidi for hosting us briefly for a cool down. If you haven’t visited this great biker grill and bar, you need to make the time! You will be glad you did! The third stop this year was Fun Products of Goldsboro, one of our major partners from the beginning and also Jerry’s last place of work. Winners of the silent auction and the big raffle were announced here.

In the back of the barn Behind old washing machines, As hidden as memories, That nobody sees, Condemned to her silence amid the droning of bees. You can smell the old barn wood, There's used leather in there Ragged and twisted And a lot worse for wear. Over the boxes, a seat for the truck I stand in the clearing, Amid generations of junk She leans on her stand, In the beauty of rust, With glimpses of chrome Is a layer of times dust. The roads she once ventured Come back into view, The memories of time And all that I knew. Will she ride with the wind Through a dream just once more Or will she remain in the dark On the old barn wood floor. Where she leans on her stand In the beauty of rust With glimpses of chrome In the layers of times dust. Fred Steele © 2017 Road Scribes of America ™ 2012
Run Inspired © 2017 ... Run goin' on, but I can’t go. Bike needs work... and have no dough... Used to let this... bother me... Hid and whined, in misery. These days... I just let it roll... Must have fun... so now we stroll... ‘midst two wheels, parked all around... Time with friends... while feet on ground. Staying out, we party late... Fellow riders... made things great... Now, back home, I go in shop.. Grab my ride... and on her, hop. Must fix bike... and make her roll... Riding is real good... for soul... Run’s inspired, my new goal... © Panhead Rod RSOA ™ 2012

Inspiration Riding and writing come from within my very soul They took a broken man and made me whole I find rhyme and verse within the wind That’s where poetry begins What the wind whispers to me Is I may find inspiration in everything I see The open road leads to an open mind Where dreams and reality become entwined I sort through the scattered thoughts and memories Of what the ride provided me Then arrange them into words to share It’s for you I lay my soul to bare © Lee Buddah Haverstick Black Rose Poetry ™ , Road Scribes of America ™ Made Bones I live a life that's blessed One I do not deserve Never taking one moment For granted Through heartache and stress I've endured Causing confusion Halfway insane Staying one step Ahead of the game Leaving the past Where it belongs In the closet With skeleton bones © Sorez Road Scribes of America ™
Throwing Letters At The Wall Words are words of feelings Unsheathed from time to time They are worse than flesh wounds Words carve scars into the mind. I'm in possession of a pen So I can write the words I see I can sketch a verbal sunset Describe a stately pine I can see what others miss Down the halls of darkened minds, Discarding things I do not want Wherever words may fall I can see connected meanings Throwing letters at the wall. True Colors You don’t have to wear the same patch as me to be my brother But you damn sure will need to earn my respect like all the others Just because you ride a motorcycle is not good enough for me It’s about your attitude, your heart, and integrity Any brother of mine must understand That it’s not the patch that makes you a man The patch you fly is yours and mine is mine But ones true colors will come out in time How you choose to treat me is what you’ll get in return Either good or bad will be a lesson learned I have many acquaintances and many brothers too In my world that all depends on you If I call you my brother, that comes with love and pride It comes from within not what’s on the outside. © Lee Buddah Haverstick, Black Rose Poetry ™ , RSOA ™

here are not many bbikers out there, myself included, that hasn’t dreamed of building their own Rat Bike. Some of the coolest bikes out there are the ones that look like they were fished out of a junkyard and pieced together with duct tape and dubious mechanical rigs. Rat bikes are kind of like that date your Mom was always warning you about. The one that was up to no good, but was the ride of your life, lol. The soul of a true rat bike builder is keeping their ride on the road, while spending as little as possible on the ride. Meet Billy LaRay Ayers, aka “Nobody” - a rat bike enthusiast and builder. He currently has 2 Rat Bikes that he has built and customized himself. A 2007 HD Softail and a 96 Yamaha Virago. He bought the ‘07 HD Softail in 2010 and it took him a couple of years to rebuild. From chopped handlebars, shotgun pipes, HD paint kit with ghost flames, dirt bike tire on front and car tire on the back, home made pegs made from bicycle pegs, homemade front shifter that he shifts with his hand that is made out of 1” tubing, since he rides this bike like a crotch rocket, to a custom built mirror that is mounted onto the shifter, custom rims, custom seat and many more handmade parts, to many to name, all designed using his own imagination.
He removed the pipes from the bike and replaced them with the tail pipes off his work truck, he cut off the windshield, cut the turn signals off, removed the back break light, shocks, fenders, dropped motorcycle as low as it would go, and removed everything down to the bare bones and began re-building. From four cans of flat black paint bought from the Dollar General to taking two black mats and shoestrings to make the seat, “Nobody’s” vision became real. It would take pages on each bike for all the modifications and customizations to be named. Each bike and each piece that went into re-building these bikes has its own story. “Nobody” can tell you about each piece, the order it was redone and the story behind each piece. Each story is fascinating. Each bike was built using his own imagination on what the outcome would be. They both reflect his personality and his imagination. “Nobody” says, “I enjoy them every bit as much as my custom bagger. They are constantly evolving. Three months from now they could totally be different bikes.” You see - a Rat Bike isn’t something you can make, it just happens. One day you take a look at your bike and say, “What a piece of s#3t!” And then it just goes from there.
The Yamaha was bought in 2005, and took about six months to complete. After riding the bike for a few days, “Nobody” stated he got tired of the way the bike looked, so while staying at a hotel in Wilmington, while working for TA Loving, the rebuild began in the parking lot at the hotel.

SLAYE Well, the weather this year finally cooperated and it was a great weekend. With all the events going on and the great music being performed, the Dragon Slayers managed to insert a mini-bike race this year. This seems to draw many of the guests attention and it was a complete success. Thankfully there were no injuries other than the minor bumps or bruises although there was a lot of trash talking and laughing going on. The food was delicious and the beverages very quenching. URMOM was the opening band Friday night and the members are still in high school. Once taking the stage it was difficult to know what this band was capable of or what type of music they played. Well, they proved to be one of the major topics of the weekend as they put it all out there, they ROCKED! Everyone was in amazement that these kids are that good. They were then followed by Supersonic which had the crowd moving and shaking for the remainder of the night. As Saturday came along, the weather was in our favor and the party then continued. Diversity jammed out the music as the day began along with Freedom Biker Church providing enough food to fill everyone’s stomach to make it through the day. Folsom 4 kicked out the Cash genre of tunes in the afternoon with The Switch doing what they do best. The Switch even had a surprise guest, by the name of Tommy Redd, that played a song or two with them on stage. Between the music, races and carrying on there were also hard working vendors catering to most everyone’s style and taste. There was food, jewelry, biker apparel, informational and almost anything else you can possible need type of products, available for your viewing and purchase. The vendors that came out worked hard to ensure everyone was being treated as their most important customers. We truly hope everyone enjoyed themselves again this year because we enjoy seeing and spending time with everyone that attends. This benefit is very important to each of us and our goal is for everyone that has the opportunity to come out and join us, make plans to attend the following years because they had such a great time. We appreciate everyone that made it out and we are already planning on Slayerfest 2018!

Interview by: Moe
photos by: Moe
“Gasser Jim” James Calvin, aka “Gasser Jim,” was born into a family of bikers and has been riding most of his life. He started out riding a mini bike that his biker Dad built for him when he was a child. He’s been riding on the road for about 12 years now. His love to ride came from his Dad. In fact if you look on Jim’s left arm, you will notice a tattoo (one of many), done from an actual picture of his Dad riding on his Panhead back in the 80’s. Originally from San Diego, California, Jim and his wife, Tiffany and daughter Kaelyn, reside in Pikeville, NC. In fact, on July 30th they celebrated their 14th Wedding Anniversary. Unfortunately, they celebrated apart due to him leaving on Deployment a couple of weeks prior to their Anniversary. “Gasser Jim” joined the United States Air Force in February of 2001 at th age of 23 and works in the USAF Fire Protection section as a Firefighter. His rank is Senior Fire Officer and Assistant Chief. He joined as a last ditch effort to clean up his life and gain a career path. He originally planned to do 4 years, but decided to make it a career since he loved being a Firefighter. He chose the Air Force because his Grandfather was a Lt. Colonel and flew the P-51 Mustang in over 100 combat missions. His Grandfather lived with him and his family the majority of his childhood and early adult life. He was a true mentor and inspiration to Jim, and Jim wanted to make him proud. Jim is currently on his 4th Deployment as Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention, which is a lead inspector. His job will consist of traveling around to all the joint services Forward Operating Bases, to conduct fire inspections and ensure overall fire safety and to enforce codes.
Jim also holds a National Certification as a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) coach. He instructs basic/intermediate classes at Seymour Johnson AF Base to military and civilian personnel. Riding is never far from Jim’s mind. He is often seen doing charitable rides with other bikers, when not on deployment. His love for his family, his Country and riding is very evident. Jim rides a 2014 HD Breakout. All the modifications and customizations were done by Jim himself. From lots of black powder coating, a 250mm rear tire, a Dunlop Elite 120 mm front tire, shotgun shocks air ride suspension with custom switch panel, Figure Machine Vision 5 air cleaner, Freedom Performance Amendment Exhaust, Big City Thunder Monster baffles, Vance and Hines FP3 tuner, Danny Gray butt crack solo seat, custom spine fork caps, Avon Gatlin Pegs and shift peg, Custom one off shift linkage” Engineered to Raise Hell” to Black Jack swing arm bag and flush mount gas cap and everything in between - the modification list goes on and the pics tells the rest of the story. I think Jim’s favorite quote fits him perfectly.... it goes....When a man becomes a Firefighter, his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of duty. (Author Unknown) Yes, “Gasser Jim” is still breaking all of Mom’s rules....running in the house, playing with fire, and breaking stuff.....and the best part is, he gets paid for it.....lol Thank you James Calvin for the Service you have given to your Country. Prayers go out to you from the BB crew for a safe return to your family.

To kick off the event, we will host a POW-MIA Recognition Day ceremony prior to the ride beginning at 10:00am at the North Carolina Veterans Park. Following the ceremony, event participants will receive a card with information concerning one of North Carolina’s unaccounted for from Korea or Vietnam, allowing riders to not only ride FOR those who can’t, but actually ride WITH those who can’t by taking “their” POW-MIA with them on the ride. The ride concludes at Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville for lunch, door prizes, vendors and entertainment by national recording artists Madison Rising. Frank’s Place t-shirts are really getting around. When I say, “getting around” I mean, getting around the world! Barney Barker, a customer of Frank’s Place in LaGrange, N.C., wore his Frank’s Place t-shirt all the way to the Arc of Triumph in Barcelona, Spain! Stop by Frank’s Place in LA and see all the photos on the walls of customers in their FRANK’S T-SHIRT around the bar. Frank is running out of wall space for photos because of all the folks sending in their pictures with their Frank’s Place t-shirts from all over the world!
