Editorz Notez Fall is almost upon us! The perfect riding weather in these parts! We look forward to the cooler days and nights. Many events and festivals are held this time of year, kids go back to school, football is here and soon basketball...Go Duke! I am sure I will get a lot of hate mail on that comment. But it’s all good! We are glad to be here to see it, and feel it and talk about it and vote for it...whatever that may be. We are proud to be a part of this great land that my grandfathers and my dad fought so valiantly for! We are more than proud to stand and say the Pledge of Allegience, to tell others that we are an American and not a Dash American! Yep, we live in the greatest country on the planet! Folks come here from all over the world to go to school, to work, to flee oppression, to have religious freedoms and live their lives as civilized human beings. To suffice I will say, if you are not proud to be an American, if you are not contributing to this economy, if you think anybody owes you anything then it’s time to leave... We all have the same opportunities here! Nobody, this day in time, is held down! You just have to have the determination and the faith to succeed! In America the possiblities are endless!!! Ok...enough of that! We have a winner in our NCPacks4Patriots Heroes Drive... Congrats to Frank’s PLace in LaGrange! They went above and beyond for our heroes!!! Pages 18-19 Just in time for Halloween, Buds “Tank Full of Time” has some interesting characters this issue! Catch up with the story on pages 30-31 and check out Tabatha’s art rendition of what’s going on in Bud’s mind! Doobie

I want to send a shout-out to my Granddaddy Joe...we are praying for you every day, Abuelo! Te Amo!

Saddling up for Sarco Remembering Jerry

story: Tracy Grimes Sickness and tragedy come knocking all too often. No one knows the life interruption that falls in the wake for so many as they work to process, understand, grieve, and continue to move forward, when someone close is the victim of such. In the summer of 2013 the Grimes family, my family, learned firsthand about these storm elements when Jerry, my father, became ill and was not getting any better. A year later, he was gone. The loss was one thing. The fact that for so long no one knew what was taking Jerry so far away was even harder. The best of the best hospitals and doctors were at a loss and in the end a guess was the seed that left us knowing the demon that had invaded our lives. Neuro Sarcoidosis. My father Jerry had worked for many years in sales with Fun Products, Inc. in Goldsboro NC. During the year battle with Sarcoidosis my brother Troy, and I, decided to hold a Poker Run Benefit in Daddy’s honor. Tons of biker family turned out in our support. After Daddy’s death, Troy and I decided we had to move forward, not only remembering Jerry, but making others aware of this demon we had never known anything about before it came knocking. Sarcoidosis has no cure. Treatments are limited. It is an inflammatory disease that can attack any organ. It can take to remission at any time and then flare back up with a vengeance. It can steal the life right out of you. The June JAMR was born early in 2015. The Inaugural ride came on the second Saturday in June 2015. Early 2016 brought 501 3-C non-profit incorporation and a board of directors. A website was established. The June JAMR came to life in social media and plans for the second annual June JAMR began to grow.

8

coidosis and ry Grimes Always on the second Saturday, this year on June 11, 2016 my brother and I, along with many added sponsors, as well as past riders and new JAMR family members, saddled up for sarcoidosis and came together to raise awareness and remember Jerry Grimes. Ray Price Harley-Davidson of Raleigh, NC sponsored our registration event and the stops on the ride included a memorial stop at Devotional Gardens of Dunn NC, where daddy is laid to rest, a fabulous BBQ and Fried Chicken lunch with multiple door prizes awarded from our various sponsors at Ron’s Barn of Coats, NC, a pit stop at Jerry’s work place with our Goldsboro, NC Fun Products family, and a finale at Cyclemax of Wilson, NC. In total there were 62 riders and more than 30 volunteers who participated in the day-long event that covered over 135 miles, which was widely covered with multiple county law enforcement escorts. It was HOT, but the ride and comradery could not be beat and was worth every ounce of sweat as we traveled from county to county…the counties that daddy traveled most, no doubt, on his 1999 Honda Valkyrie, that I now proudly ride. The ride was a huge success. Fundraising, however, is not over. August 25, 2016 the JAMR team will deliver BBQ plates to Goldsboro local area businesses to supplement proceeds. Proceeds will be divided between The Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, Faith Church of Goldsboro, and various other local charities. Plans are already underway for the 3rd Annual June JAMR, the second Saturday of June – June 10, 2017 – so mark your calendars and request your time off. You don’t want to miss this event of the year!!! You can learn more about Jerry, his story, sarcoidosis, and The June JAMR and what we do at www. thejunejamr.org and you can learn more about sarcoidosis at The Foundation for Sarcoidosis (FSR) www.stopsarcoidosis. org . To become a part of the JAMR family and to be included in our email updates, please feel free to email me at: thejunejamr@gmail.com. Many thanks to every rider, every volunteer throughout the year, the escort assist from law enforcement over five counties, every donation, and every sponsor – both big and small. A special thanks as well to Behind Barz Magazine for always providing stellar event coverage and for proudly sponsoring our organization and efforts. Be well and ride safe my friends! ~ Red (aka) Tracy Grimes, Executive Director of The June JAMR Photo credits, Kris Weiss and April Rosequist (Ray Price Harley-Davidson), Moe (Behind Barz Magazine), and Julie Wallace Turner.

Enjoying the great food... Blue Star Bud, Becky & Super Dave

Some of our favorite eateries!

These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! Monticello Cafe Brentwood Village, Wilson, NC Today, Becky, Dave & I had lunch at the Monticello Cafe, here in Wilson. Even though they offer a complete menu of Italian dishes, we all enjoyed the R&F Special sub. It is hands-down the best submarine sandwich in the Wilson area. They aren’t cheap, at about $10.00 for the 12 inch sub, but they are delicious, toasted, come with chips & a pickle, and well worth the price! The Monticello Cafe has a kids menu, serves beer & wine, and is open Mon - Sat from 11-2 then 5-9. They have been serving the Wilson area since 1975. If you like Italian food, give them a try.

Oh My Lard Elm City, NC Today Becky & I ate at the Oh My Lard restaurant in Elm City. Yesterday the local paper had a nice photo of the owner, Sherry Bass with a story of how she was accepting donations to help feed First Responders like LE and Fire & Rescue. So, with that kind of an outgoing attitude to those who serve, we just had to try the Oh My Lard restaurant. We’re glad we did! Our waitress Sam took our orders, brought our drinks, kept them filled, and was sweet and friendly to us. I had the Hamburger Steak plate w/onions & gravy, and mashed potatoes with gravy, and green beans. Becky had the Club Wrap with fried squash, and our meals were excellent! Seriously, everything was fresh and home made. For a small town diner, they serve food like Aunt Bea used to make. Becky & I shared a plate of Desert Nachos, and they sure were good on a hot day. Oh My Lard is owned and operated by Sherry & Russ Bass, who are both hard-working Bikerz! Show your support for our kind of people and have a meal there.

Blue Star Bud

Their hours are M-F 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM but they stay open from 4:30 to 8:00 PM on Friday night during the busy season. Saturday hours are from 8AM to 1PM.

your Health Behind Barz Balance Balance in our bodies is very important. We need balance in our blood, in our breathing, in how we walk and even ride. Our bodies are wonderfully made and it takes many parts working together to give us balance. Our ears are not used only for hearing but also for balance. One section, known as the cochlea, is responsible for our sense of hearing. Yet, also in our inner ear is a maze of bony chambers called the bony labyrinth. It consists of two sacs called the utricle and saccule. Within these sacs are receptors called maculae. They are made of sensory hair cells covered by a gel-like cap with tiny crystals inside. Whenever we tilt our head, gravity causes the crystals to slide to one side, creating a pull on the gel and the sensory hairs. This triggers our hair cells to fire nerve impulses along our vestibular nerve to our brain. Our second organ of balance in our ears detects the rotational movements of our head. It consists of three fluid-filled loops, the semi-circular canals, which are arranged at right angles to each other. When we rotate our head it will send messages to our brain as well. Our eyes will also send important information to our brain about our body’s position. The proprioreceptors in our muscles, tendons and joints transmit how stretched they are. Then our brain will assimilate all this information, compare it with memories of balance, past activities and help us be‌ balanced. Good balance can often be taken for granted. Most people don’t find it difficult to walk across a gravel driveway, transition from walking on a sidewalk to grass, or ride their bike without falling over. However, with impaired balance such activities can be extremely fatiguing and sometimes dangerous. If you are having problems with balance please see your health care provider they can help you. Be blessed, be balanced, and ride safe! Deborah Alston RN

frank's place

NCpacks4patriots heroes drive Frank’s Place in LaGrange, N.C., was the winner of our NCPACKS4Patriots Heroes Drive! The fine folks at Frank’s Place rallied behind their friend and owner, Frank, and donated a truck load of items to send to our troops! When I say truck load I mean just that! They collected over 1,100 items in just six weeks and it filled up the back of our pickup truck completely! (See photo left) We delivered the items to NCPACKS in Ayden, N.C. and the volunteers unloaded and sorted the donations. The items filled several tubs until NCPACKS ran out of tubs! Awesome job guys! Our heroes deployed all over the world will certainly appreciate comfort items from home! Just because our drive is over for now, please continue to help NCPACKS by donating items or volunteering at their office. For more info please see page six in this issue.

from the

mind of big ed Kids now days are soft. All wussified, but don’t mind spending your hard earn money tho as they lounge away at some swimming pool with a bottle water and a set of ear buds in their head and not a care in the world of where the money comes from and how hard you had to work for it. That’s one of the many reasons this country has gone to hell in a gas truck!

photo: Moe

Hello you Happy Riders!!! I want to speak to the cage dwellers for a second. You know, the folks that don’t know life on two wheels. Do I got your attention? Good! Have guys ever wanted to know what riding a bike in 97 degree weather feels like? Well, roll yer windows up, and flip your switch in side your car from A/C to HEAT and then turn the fan to full blast! That’s pretty close, maybe closer if you can grab up a few June bugs and get someone with a sling shot and have them unload a few to your face. Does that sound like fun? If you said, No... Well you’er a wuss! If you said, yea... Then you might have it in ya to be a biker just yet. Dang y’all, it’s been hot! The kinda hot that when you been cropping baccor like we used to do back in the day, and see the boss mans farm truck come rolling up full of dust. You were so happy to see that cooler full of ice and can drink tops and bottoms. Sure enough, I’d reach right on down to where your fingers would almost burn from the cold watered down ice and grab me a drink from the bottom. That drink wouldn’t last two seconds and I’d grab me another one to sip on. Today’s kids know nothing of that kinda work!!! That’s how you did it back in the day if you wanted money during the summer. Shoot, I bet you couldn’t drag a youngin out the house now by their big toe with a game controller cord dangling behind them in this summer time heat.

Another is you got illegals coming in by the bus loads to do jobs that we Americans feel is below us to do...Notice I said ILLEGALS... All the while the illegals ain’t paying no taxes on that hard earn money and having babies like fleas on a blue tick hound as we flip the bill with our hard earned money. Y’all, that shat ain’t right! It ain’t! Cause they’re over here jumping on the wagon eating up the Medicaid and food stamps while my poor little shopping cart at the piggly wiggly has a ton of open space in it while theirs you couldn’t cram a slippery Slim Jim in it. How is today’s generation of kids going to know what hard work is, if we keep letting them take the easy road. You got to teach them appreciation. You got to teach them what’s it like to sweat and give the boss 100%. Then when they get a good job, “ if there’s such a thing” they’ll appreciate what’s it’s like to work in a place that’s cool. Oh but wait... There ain’t many jobs like that ‘cause tobacco is bad and some folks sued the big tobacco companies cause they blame the tobacco companies for putting that gun to their heads to smoke. Uh oh...I said the “g” word. I can almost hear the trampling feet of thousands of lawyers ready to bust down my door ‘cause I said G U N. Well, let’s save that one for another time. Right now, even tho America is so screwed up with offended folks that are offended with other offended folks that it won’t be long before you can marry your dog or cat! Either way, this country is still far better off then being anywhere else. So, with that in mind, go outside and feel that summer time burn as you fire up them cylinders and inhale that hint of exhaust. Put on your shades and that bobble head helmet and let the wind be your friend as you put a few dotted lines behind you and be thankful that we live on a land where there is still some God fearing folks out there who still remember this is the land of the free and home of the brave. See you out there, Behind Barz.

2nd North Carolina NATIONALS Raleigh, NC

This year’s event was even bigger and badder than last year’s first ever Goodguys North Carolina Nationals!!!

story & photos: Doobie

What a great show in NC’s capital city at the NC State Fairgrounds! It was back in April and folks came in from all over the country! The Goodguys NC Nationals takes place outside and inside at the Fairgrounds with hundreds of cars and trucks on display, plus vendors with parts, collectibles, t-shirts and all kinds of gearhead needs and wants. There was live autocross action, demolition derby, Nitro Thunderfest with Dragster Exhibition and so much more with two fun packed days. There were many kid oriented events in the Graham Building. The coolest kid event we thought was the Kid’s Model Make and take! That was fun to watch and I am sure the kids will never forget that experience! There was an indoor swap meet in the Expo Building, indoor car show and commercial vendors in the Graham Building, an indoor race care display in Dorton Arena and in the Scott Building on Saturday it was Gary’s Get-Together and Sunday Church Service! Yes, the cool cars and cool events were packed to the grills!!! Be on the look-out in 2017 for the 3rd Annual Goodguys North Carolina Nationals! Get all the details at:

caws for the paws The Unspoken Sons MC participated in “Caws for the Paws” fundraiser on Apri l 2, 2016. This is an annual motorcycle ride to raise money for the Lenoir County SPCA. The gray skies and threat of rain didn’t put a damper on a great ride through the beautiful Lenoir county back country roads. Even Lenoir County Sheriff Ronnie Ingram joined in the ride and fellowship. Bar-b-Que sandwiches were provided and served by the board of the SPCA. All funds raised are used to support the shelter and care for homeless, neglected and abused animals. As well as educational programs on adoption, foster, and rescue programs to place animals in loving homes, information about spay/neuter programs to decrease pet overpopulation, responsible pet ownership, animal advocacy, and how to report homeless, abused and neglected animals, and advocacy with local, state and national decision makers. Board member, Chris Rogerson, said that “Lenoir County takes in about 2500 stray, neglected or surrendered animals each year.” If you would like more information about the SPCA or their upcoming events you can visit them on their website at: www.lenoircountyspca.org or visit them on Facebook at Lenoir County SPCA. Birds & Brews

at Sylvan Heights Bird Park

SCOTLAND NECK, NC The first annual Birds & Brews took place on June 25th at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. We had a marvelous time hangin’ out with the birds while tasting local craft brews. We walked around at our own pace from aviary to aviary enjoying the sites and sounds while stopping to visit with reps from the local breweries and tasting their finest craft beers. All the while, listening to live music by the Martin County Ramblers echoing through the foliage. It was a rather warm and sticky evening but it was made so much cooler by the cute little tasting cups we all received and the cold fresh brews they held! This was a sold out event and rightfully so!

Some folks stopped to take part in giant Janga or cornhole. There was also great food provided by a couple of local food trucks. Did I mention that it was an all-you-can-sample craft beer event!?!?! I don’t think you could come up with a much better scenario! Breweries on hand were: Duck Rabbit serving Milk Stout, Amber Ale Nash Community College serving IPA, Cream Ale Sweet Taters serving Sweet Potato Ale, Rye IPA, & Blueberry Lemon Carolina Eagle serving Appalachian IPA, Carolina Brewery Sky Blue, Big Boss Bad Penny, Lone Rider Hoppy KiYay IPA, Bold Rock Hard Cider, Goose Island Matilda Fishing Creek Cidar serving Fishing Creek Hard Cidar Tarboro Brewing Company serving Dear Abbaye, Rye IPA

story & photos: Doobie

This was a very well planned event! There were so many craft beers available to try. We can’t say which of these were our favorites...there were just too many to choose from and so many that we really liked. You’ll just have to come out to next year’s 2nd Annual Birds & Brews and find out for yourself! Antique Bikes on Main Saturday, July 29th, 2016 Chesnee, SC Story & photos by Budman For 3 days at the end of July, the little town of Chesnee, SC held the 12th annual 'Antique Bikes on Main' event right smack in the middle of town. My son SuperDave & I went on Saturday to check things out for ourselves, and we weren't disappointed, not by a long shot. There were bikes everywhere, of every vintage and country of origin. British bikes, Jap bikes, dirt bikes, and of course an abundance of Harley-Davidsons, pans, knucks & many folks riding their licensed shovels. I didn't see any old Indians, I'm sorry to say, but there were plenty of new ones to see, and they are beautiful machines by anyone's standards. I visited with Diane Dixon and Max at the Motor Maids booth and gave them some Behind Barz magazines. They were all smiles and told me that Debbie Sykes, the editor of Behind Barz is a card-carrying Motor Maid, too. The Motor Maids are one of the oldest AMA sanctioned women's motorcycle clubs in the country and are serious about their riding. Amazing ladies all! With hundreds of bikes & bikerz sharing every available parking spot, in 90 degree temperatures you might think that nerves could become a bit frayed. Not so, everyone was courteous, polite, respectful and the Chesnee PD presence for the event was two officers tooling around in a golf cart! The city had provided ample trash containers about the area and folks used them. I'd rather be at a large biker event than anywhere near a political rally. Speaking of politics, Big Ed Smith would be happy to know that there were 'Trump' signs & T-shirts for sale all over the place. While waltzing around with a bag of cotton candy that I scored at the carnival area I spotted Mr. Dennis Harris, the event coordinator cruising about in a golf cart being driven by a distinguished looking gentleman. When I took a picture of Mr. Harris and his driver, he introduced me to Chesnee's Mayor the honorable Max Cash. Dave and I walked all around, up and down Main St. and through the Swap Meet area, looked over some old bikes for sale, but decided to pass on any new resto projects for a while. Now that we have Dave's '99 Night Train up to snuff, it's time to ride. Maybe next year I'll be able to arrive early and stay late enough for the entire three day event, but even for one day, it was sure worth the trip.

Injured?

Following Too Close Creates A Dangerous Situation

Everyone that rides knows that a two-wheeled motorcycle has significantly less traction than a car with four wheels. Additionally, motorcycle tires themselves have less traction than car tires, since the motorcycle tire surface is rounded, whereas a car tire is flatter and has more area of rubber on the pavement. Not only does it take motorcycles more time to stop in an emergency situation than a car, but the consequences of crashing can be devastating to the riders. For that reason, it is especially important for motorcyclists to not tailgate. It is necessary to maintain a safe speed and distance from the vehicle in front of them in order to be able to safely stop in the event that the other vehicle comes to an unexpected stop. There have been many instances where groups of riders have had large accidents caused by the people in the front of the group riding too close and the vehicle in front of the group suddenly slowed, causing a chain reaction accident. Essentially, following close to the vehicle in front of you is not worth your life. Make sure that you maintain a safe speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you and anticipate that the vehicle may suddenly slow down or come to an abrupt stop. If you ride keeping this in mind, you will be a much safer motorcycle rider.

As I snicked my sled into first gear I noticed that Tal’ Tanya was all smiles & her pilot Martin was making a slashing motion across his throat with his fingers in the universal sign to ‘Shut ‘em down’! Oh now what, I wondered. As I dismounted my scoot I saw that Spirit Chewy had jumped up onto the back of Sue’s seat and refused to budge. Apparently he wasn’t going to get off until he got to go for a motorcycle ride! So…Zeke, myself, Tal’ Tanya, Martin and all the Derelicts guys spread out into a long line to wave and cheer at Sue & Spirit Chewy as they rode around us in wide circles. Finally Sue stopped her bike, looked back at Spirit Chewy and asked him; “Is that enough Sweetie? We really do have to go.” Chewy winked at Sue, woofed a “yes” then leapt down from her bike and trotted over to stand between Tal’ Tanya & Martin. I just had to know one thing before we left…”Hey Martin” I said. “What does Angel Flight Fox mean?” Tal’Tanya answered “That’s our little secret, now you’d better leave before Spirit Chewy decides he wants another ride.” And with that, we were off into the darkness on the highway to the underworld. As we rode on I could hear AC/DC coming from the distance singing something about a highway and bells. Some spots in the road were so rough I had to hold my mouth open to prevent my upper teeth from bashing my lower teeth to dust. The Derelicts riders had us in a chainsaw formation as they sped past our right side, crossed over in front of us, and slowed down some on our left side, crossing over again on our rear flank. We were the bar of the formation being protected on all four sides. In time we spotted some lights in the distance, and as we drew closer it became apparent that these were motorcycle headlights. “It’s showtime!” I said to no one in particular.

story: Bud Dunlap Finally I was able to make out our ‘welcoming party’, there were demons of every sort: gargoyles, zombies, vampires, witches, a seven foot tall Tasmanian devil, and they were all riding classic British motorcycles. There were Norton Commandos, Triumph Bonnies, BSA’s, Royal Enfields and even a Velocette or two. While I was thinking ‘That’s odd’, the Derelicts riders sprang in to action. The lead Derelict did a ‘stoppie’ whirling his bike around in a 360 knocking two demons clean off their machines. Four of our bodyguards powered ahead of us spinning their rear wheels and creating a smoke screen of burning rubber for us to pass through. Thanks to the slick maneuvers by our Derelicts Riders the guardians of the gate were dropping like flies as we proceeded ahead unscathed.

tank full of time n

Turning our bikes around we headed towards what appeared to be a town, not very far away. When we pulled into the center of town, which was a big circle, we could see that the stores were all bars, saloons and pubs. “Hey” Zeke called out “This doesn’t look so bad!” “Yeah.” Sue replied, but did you notice they all have ‘Closed’ signs on the doors?” “Well, that’s a real bummer.” I said, “And I sure could stand a cold drink right about now. It sure is warm here.” Before we could complain much more about being hot and thirsty we found ourselves being surrounded by the British bike riding demons we had just bowled our way through. “Just you wait here now.” A gargoyle said to us. “The prince of darkness will be along shortly, and he’ll know what to do with the lot of you!” Not only did the gargoyle speak English, he spoke it with an English accent. And I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. Once again, I wasn’t even close. From outside of town we could hear thunder crashing, accompanied by red and purple lightning bolts flashing across the sky. Strange streams of familiar music played as a single rider came into town and towards our little gathering.

art: Tabatha Ferrell

We didn’t have far to go after losing our determined adversaries before the gate to the underworld appeared, glowing cherry red hot before us. Even as I wondered how we were going to get through the thing, our demonblockers all pulled wheelies and hit the gate simultaneously causing it to fly open. Sue, Zeke and I motored through the gate, and then did U-turns to thank our valiant protectors, but they vanished before our very eyes. As mysteriously as they appeared, they disappeared, going back to wherever they came from, I guess. We didn’t see the Derelicts Riders anymore, but what we did see was all the horrific gate guardians rapidly approaching and they didn’t look any too happy. We all know what they say about ‘payback’ and there were dozens of denizens of the dark, but just the three of us.

He rode the coolest bike, with the coolest name ever…a Vincent Black Shadow, in pristine condition. The name 'Vincent’ was done in blood red paint, and a British Union Jack waved from the back of his bike. There before us was the prince of darkness himself. Even as I finally recalled the lyrics to ‘No more tears’ I blurted out; “Ozzy Osbourne…You’re the devil himself?”

lass Clown was born in August of 2015 due to being hit from the left side while on vacation.

In late August 2015, with the help of Roger & Ginger Martin (Rogers Custom) and their right hand air brush artist, Adam Cutlip (SureShot & Apparel), “Class Clown” was born.

I bought the bike from Rod Cunningham in the summer of 2011. The bike featured 3 clowns, the flamed gas tank, and the stretched saddle bags. While on vacation in late July of 2015 my bike and I was T-boned from the left side and then shoved across the black top with damage to the complete right side of the bike. It also had damagae to the left saddle bag lid. It was the famous, “I didn’t see you!” After getting the police report we requested the 87 year old driver to please back up off of my bike! I had gone to Pigeon Forge, TN., to ride the Tail of the Dragon and many of the other great rides in the area. After being hit the only thing I got to ride was a Ferris wheel located behind the hotel we were staying in. So, I limped the bike back to WV with some bungee cords around both saddle bags and dropped the bike off at Rogers Customs. I told them let’s see how much of it you and Adam can fix and turned them loose with my idea of wanting a circus theme. I told them since the only thing I got to ride in TN was a Ferris wheel then it had to have a Ferris wheel in the paint job, a monkey, a moon, and anything else they could come up with as long as she becomes a head turner.

Special thanks to Roger & Ginger with Rogers Custom Paint & Body (304)412-2850 out of Huntington WV for doing all the body work!

Big shout out to airbrush artist, Adam Cutlip with SureShot & Apparel for the amazing air brush work! Thanks also to my biggest supporters, Perry Maston and Tari Ashworth!

why i ride It’s a Family Thing I began the journey after I met a friend, Christina Reid, who rode a Sportster 1200 and I thought she was awesome. I wanted to have the fun and freedom she was experiencing riding her own bike. I wanted the challenge riding brought along with it. My husband, who rode in years past, had resumed riding again. I had ridden with him enough to know I liked riding. We were members of CVMA, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and our daughter was gaining interest in the group and riding too. I knew that for all three of us to ride, Mama had to do something to remedy the issue. However, my solution included my then 16-year-old daughter who attended the basic classes with me and our story began. My daughter Logan and I attended the Ray Price HD motorcycle boot camp in spring 2013. While there, we were able to gain basic knowledge about motorcycles and learn a few tips about bikes. That same summer, Logan and I attended a basic riding course offered at the local community college. We were able to gain the basic skills for properly riding while receiving class and riding instruction. We obtained our licenses that same summer and the riding began. Our first bike was a Harley Davidson Sportster 883. This was a great bike. We took turns riding as I rode more and my daughter rode with her daddy. In my daughter’s words, “Mama gets everything.” I loved this bike and dubbed her “Blue Berry.” Blue Berry was a perfect first bike. My daughter and I gained our confidence and increased our skill level while riding Blue Berry. So many memories were made on this bike. I rode Blue Berry to Gettysburg, PA for a National’s meeting with Combat Vet Motorcycle Association and to Washington, D.C. to participate in Rolling Thunder. By the way, Blue Berry has a touring seat that made the rides much more comfortable. On December 22, 2015, my daughter and husband, Ernie, gave me a 2015 HD Soft Tail Slim as a gift for Christmas. I failed to mention, I name all our bikes and I named her “Anderson Twenty Two.” For short, I refer to her as Twenty Two.

BB Gear Get You SOME 40

My daughter became the full time rider of Blue. At 19, Logan and Blue have ridden over 8,000 miles to include a trip to D.C. for Rolling Thunder. Recently, Logan graduated to a Street Glide which she rode to Washington, D.C. for Rolling Thunder, 2016. I see her riding many miles on this bike. Twenty Two and I have ridden over 10,000 miles at the time of this writing and I can tell you, I love Twenty Two and riding. What a great story we are making. We have had so much fun and fulfillment while riding bikes. God is good and has blessed our family with a hobby that has brought us closer together and has allowed us to bless others. While riding, we have gained a new family, the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association and several new friends. We love the mission of CVMA of Vets Helping Vets. We ride to help Vets and others while riding in charity rides. We are so fortunate to have a hobby we can enjoy while helping those in need. What a blessing these bikes have been. We also enjoy riding as a family. We often take day trips and one of our jokes is that we will ride anywhere to eat. It doesn’t take much to convince us to take a trip to a newly found restaurant to try the food. We love the wind, the challenge, the togetherness and the adventure. Riding has given me more than I ever expected: family, friends, the ability to help others, and memories. In short, it’s a family thing. Enjoy the ride, Beth “Pink” Byrd

why i ride The Journey I'm a rider. Most days I hop on the motorcycle with my helmet and gloves in a t-shirt and jeans and hit the road. I don't care what the destination is I crave the journey. The engine between my legs, the wind whistling past my face, the miles coming as quick as they are going. It's unbelievable how exhilarating and relaxing the experience is. These days I'm accustomed to the side eye I get when I stop for gas or food and pull off my helmet. That's a girl! What does she know about riding? I don't fit the old stereotype of a female on the back of bike with a man riding. Don't get me wrong I have ridden the back of several bikes, I just prefer to ride my own. I currently ride a 2009 Suzuki Gladius 650. My bike has been through the grinder. I bought it brand new and have dropped it several times, given numerous males, females, and children rides on the back, and taught some new riders the basics on her. Whenever I make a stop on a ride either for gas or food there is usually two or three people who always come over to inquire about the bike and the length of my riding experience. What I love most about the motorcycle community is regardless of whether you are a male or female, respect is given to anyone who is on the road riding. If a bike is on the side of the road in trouble I have seen multiple riders pull over to assist in any way they can. Anytime I'm on a solo ride and I come up to a group of riders I am never turned away. If I can keep up I am welcome. It is a very positive atmosphere. I first started riding back in 2005. I learned to ride in the parking lot of a city park on a Suzuki GSXR-1000. At the time I had on jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. No helmet. No gloves. I fell soooo many times. At one point a police officer came up to me and said you'll get it eventually and walked away. Right after that I fell off the motorcycle going about 30mph and got horrible road rash on my arm which I still have to this day. But I didn't give up. I didn't let falling scare me into never riding. Once I finally got the hang of it I was ready for the open road. At the time I didn't have a permit or license to ride but I was out there getting it! I didn't see many female riders at that time.

I remember getting ready to ride with some friends and wondering what I was supposed to wear. There weren't any other female riders to ask. The only females in my group always rode on the back of their boyfriend's bikes. In the end I always opted for comfort over style. These days, I'm more versatile, I may ride in some heels or some boots depending on my mood and the occasion. In 2016, I see women of all shapes, sizes, colors, and clubs out on the road on bikes. I am proud to be one of them out there enjoying the journey only those with a motorcycle can understand. Photography by Mark Lomax of EyeMax Photography Makeup by Keisha Garrett

A Memory.. Forgotten...

Wertless

It's where the rubber meets the highway And the bullshit's left behind Where the twisting of the throttle Sends shivers down your spine When you find those special moments Out there in the wind Knowing that the price you paid You would gladly pay again Where Bike and Rider become one Out there on the road Man and machine finely tuned As throttle thunder roars A place where despair can be tossed aside Like an old and rusted part Replaced with hope like a brand new chain And a timed ignition spark Lean into expressways curve A gear up on the straight Front wheel lifts up off the ground For a moment and it feels Great!

When miles past Have worn me down And the time has come To sit this run out Will I have left Something behind Something worthwhile Through the miles of Rhymes Or will my words Just fade in the wind Will the ink run dry From my weathered pen These thoughts I ponder As each day passes With every mile I ride And each tank full of gas Will it even matter That I was here at all That I paid my dues Out there on the road That there were many Who called me Brother That I earned respect From many others Will I be remembered For the things I have done Or will I just be A memory forgotten

Born out of wedlock A prodigal son Half of his life Spent behind bars Prospecting patches Too good for his back Feds on his tail And cops on his ass Now don't get me wrong The Brother was righteous Yet a twist of fate Labeled him worthless A Poet, a writer A son of a bitch A bastard stretched Way beyond his means Ashes to ashes From dusk until dawn In this game called life He was just a pawn

1st annual at burnouts tavern pinetops, nc This was an amazing event for a couple of amazing people, Mike Stallings and Gabriella (Brie) Iduh! Ten year old Brie is battling brain cancer. This event was hosted by Richard & Donna Joyner, owners of Burnouts Tavern in Pinetops. It was in memory of Ben Barker and Dinky Webb. On July 31st friends and family came out to Burnouts Tavern to support Mike and Brie. The poker run made a couple of stops by the graves of Dinky and Ben for a visit before proceeding to other places to draw cards. It was very hot that day and the poker run riders got caught in rain on their way back in from their last stop. But they didn’t mind! BBQ sandwiches, chips and a cold beverage was awaiting them! There were so many raffle prizes that it took up the pool tables and all the counter space inside. The Konnection Band intertained everyone into the evening. It was a packed house! Thanks to everyone who participated in this event and donated prizes. Please keep Mike and Brie in your prayers! $1,468 was raised!

Al and Candy Wed

Al and Candy met through mutual friends in February of 1997. She had been out of the Air Force for about a year and a half, he had just moved into her old unit a few months before. They started dating the following August, were married in a courthouse in June of 1998, and again in a church wedding in April of 1999. For 18 years they have lived the military lifestyle, too many deployments to remember anymore, moving across the country and to multiple new homes. Now Al is getting ready to end his military career and start a new life out of uniform. That upcoming transition has offered quite a few challenges to them personally, and to their marriage. All those deployments, the many months away from home and family, have taken their toll mentally and physically. It's not just your body that gets beat up in military service, your mind does too. It can be very difficult to leave a combat zone and return to "normal" life back home. Al has had to do that many times. You see and feel too much to be the same person ever again. His travel schedule was so intense it didn't leave much time to adjust back into life at home, and the cracks were beginning to show in their marriage.

Things started to change rapidly for Al and Candy in the next six months. Neither had attended church for at least 15 years, but Bill touched their lives with something powerful. Al and Candy decided to check out a service at Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville, NC last November. The very first sermon they heard by the pastor, JD Tew, blew them away. It was like JD read a script of their lives and was talking to them in the sermon. Al and Candy decided that maybe this was meant to be, maybe God was trying to get through to them in all the difficulties they had been facing. They knew something very important was missing in their lives. They haven’t missed a Sunday service since the first one they attended.

By spring of 2015 the cracks were too big to ignore. They had drifted so far apart. Things weren’t working, and they couldn’t ignore it anymore. Luckily they found a great marriage counselor, with a Christian background, and spent a year working very hard to put themselves and their marriage back together. Last spring they also attended Freedom Biker Church’s 2015 Bike Blessing where they met the associate pastor, Bill Johnson. Bill blessed Al’s motorcycle, and prayed for Al, Candy and their daughter Emily. photos: Budman story: contributed

“We decided that things weren’t going very well when we did things OUR way, it was time to get God’s help,” says Candy. “It took us six months to get in the door of the church, but we have found a home here. The members of Freedom Biker Church come from all walks of life, but two things unite them, a love of Jesus Christ and a love of riding. There is some awesome fellowship here, a motorcycle community with a serious desire to live by the word of God. You don’t have to ride to attend, but if you’re looking for a spiritual home where you will be accepted, as is, tattoos, piercings, black leather, and bushy beards, come check out Freedom Biker Church. It might just change your life like it did ours. We messed up our lives pretty well,we made some pretty stupid mistakes, but the incredible thing is, even if we turn away from God He is always ready to accept us back. It doesn’t matter what mistakes you’ve made, or how bad you are feeling about it, God is always ready to celebrate a lost sheep returned.” Their marriage is back on track, and they have been strengthening their connection with God. In February Al asked Candy if she would renew their wedding vows with him again. He wanted a new beginning for their marriage and this time they would be living by God's plan, not their own. This year has been about more than transitioning out of the military, it has been about transforming themselves for the better with God's help. Candy said, "I've learned something important this last year. True love isn't an adjective for a feeling, it's not that fairy tale we believe when we first fall for someone. True love is a verb. I keep telling that to my teenage daughter." Their first ceremony, at the courthouse, was 18 years ago this month and they decided it was meaningful to renew their vows close to that particular anniversary. Al wanted a biker wedding this time and Candy thought it was a wonderful idea. "Riding is a favorite thing for us," Al, a member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, said. "Our previous church wedding was more about celebrating our marriage the traditional way for our family, this wedding is more about us and who we've become. It's about making a serious commitment to God, keeping those marriage vows for Him this time and not just for ourselves." This was a simple ceremony. The bridegroom, the best man, and Bill the pastor wore black leather vests and jeans, so did many of the guests. The bride wore pink. The music was all about persevering through tough times, accepting each other's faults, and loving each other the way Christ instructed. The guests were friends from church, members of two chapters of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and family. There was a ride from the church to Al and Candy's home, after the ceremony, for a cookout.
