Reprinted courtesy of the Rapid City Journal - Rapid City, S.D. By Steve Miller Journal staff A motorcycle built for President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign is on exhibit at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

Bush signed the bike’s gas tank and rode it a short distance, according to the motorcycle’s builder, Jeff Nicklus, owner of Desperado Motorcycles of the Houston area. “The President actually rode it the length of our tractor-trailer, and that was it,” Nicklus said in a phone interview. “He’s the only person who’s ever ridden the motorcycle. He did great,” he said. “Boy, the Secret Service was nervous. They wouldn’t let him ride it outside.” Nicklus said Bush rode the motorcycle about a week after he had fallen on a bicycle and banged himself up. Nicklus delivered the “Bush Bike” to the museum in Sturgis last Friday.

President George Bush signs the tank of a custom motorcycle built for his re-election campaign in 2004. The bike is now on display at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

The one-of-a-kind custom motorcycles bears the signatures of President George W. Bush; first lady Laura Bush; Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas; Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas; Texas Gov. Rick Perry; California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger; Texas state Sen. Tommy Williams; Ed Gillespie, former chairman of the Republican National Committee; Davis and Howard Bellamy of the Bellamy Brothers Band; and builder Jeff Nicklus.

First lady Laura Bush signing the tank of the custom motorcycle built by Desperado Motorcycles of Houston, Texas in 2004.

“It’s the first time a sitting president had a motorcycle built for him,” Nicklus said. Nicklus used a 2005 model Jeff Nicklus Signature Series Desperado Motorcycle with a specialty built TP Engineering 124-cubic-inch, 145-horsepower polished engine; polished six-speed transmission; and chrome wheels in the shape of the “Lone Star” of Texas. It is painted red, white and blue. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution is airbrushed on the tank, with the signatures underneath. The motorcycle was used by the Republican National Committee throughout Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign. “The bike traveled with the president from the convention on,” Nicklus said. It was also on hand for Bush’s inaugural ball in January 2005. Since then, the motorcycle, which is still owned by Nicklus, returned to Desperado Motorcycles’ headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas. Nicklus said he builds four “one-off” motorcycles a year. He built a motorcycle for the Kids and Chrome fundraiser at the Sturgis rally two years ago. The Sturgis Museum is the first institution of its kind to exhibit the “Bush Bike” and the first place the public has the opportunity to view it. In the future, the “Bush Bike” will be offered by the Nicklus family to the Bush Library Foundation and be placed on permanent loan for display purposes at the George W. Bush Presidential Library. I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH PRISON MINISTRY SINCE 1986. WE GO INTO PRISONS AND ENCOURAGE THE MEN TO LIVE A LIFE PLEASING GOD. BUT THE GUYS WHO DO NOT WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT GOD ARE HARD TO REACH. THEY WILL NOT COME OUT FOR THE PROGRAMS WE PUT ON. WE HAVE STRONG MEN, SINGERS AND ATHLETES TALK TO THEM, BUT THEY STILL REFUSE TO COME OUT OF THE BARRACKS. WHEN WE BRING THE MOTORCYCLES TO THE PRISONS WE RIDE ALL THE BIKES AROUND THE PRISON AND WAKE THEM ALL UP. THEN WE RIDE THE BIKES INTO THE PRISON AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM COME OUT. GOD CALL US TO BE FISHERS OF MEN. BRINGING THE BIKES INTO THE COMPOUND IS KINDA LIKE CHUMMING THE WATERS. YOU GOT TO GET THEM NEAR THE BOAT BEFORE YOU CAN CATCH THEM. MANY OF THE GALS RIDE THEIR OWN BIKES INTO THE PRISON, INCLUDING MY WIFE, SHARON. SHE IS A GREAT WITNESS TO THEM. SHE TELLS THEM HOW SHE PUT UP WITH ME FOR 11 YEARS OF OUR MARRIAGE AND SHE SAW ME BECOME A MAN OF GOD IN 1985 AND I HAVE BEEN CLEAN EVER SINCE. WE HAVE BEEN MARRIED SINCE 1974. THE GIRLS SHOW THE MEN THAT THERE IS HOPE FOR BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS. I BUILT THE ‘DOIN TIME’ CHOPPER IN 2005 AND SHE HAS BEEN IN 39 PRISONS SO FAR. THIS BIKE SHOWS THE MEN THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE ON THE OUTSIDE THAT CARE FOR THEM AND ARE WAITING TO HELP THEM WHEN THEY GET OUT. SO, NEXT TIME YOU SEE THAT GREEN DEPT. OF CORRECTION SIGN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD YOU MUST KNOW THAT IT MEANS THAT THERE ARE OVER 1,000 GUYS OR GALS LIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN A PRISON SO, SAY A PRAYER FOR THEM. MANY OF THEM ARE GETTING OUT AND ARE MOVING RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO YOU. ORLANDO, FLORIDA continued next page

TYLER CARTER STORY: SARA JOHNSON

PHOTO: ANGEL EYES

rd,

On Friday August 3 19 year old Tyler Carter from Snow Hill North Carolina had taken his uncles motorcycle out for an enjoyable cruise around his community, when only 2 miles away from home he loss control of the bike. His mom and step dad, Bennie and Sara Johnson had gone on vacation and received that dreaded call that their son had been in a wreck. Tyler was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital in Goldsboro, which we thought Tyler had a bad laceration over his eye. When his parents arrived, the attending ER physician told them that Tyler had serious internal injuries which their trauma unit couldn’t accommodate. Tyler was then air lifted to Pitt County Memorial hospital in Greenville. Tyler arrived in Greenville and indeed had lost blood supply to his left kidney; his colon had detached; laceration to his spleen, broken collarbone, two fractures in his back, fractured scapula and broken nose. Tyler spent the next three days with back to back surgeries just to repair his colon and to remove his left kidney. While recovering from his three major surgeries, Tyler developed sepsis, an infection which placed him on three life support systems. He was on 100% ventilator, 24 hr continuous dialysis for his kidney, and a catheter to regulate his heart. The Doctors where extremely worried that he wouldn’t make it, and all I could do was pray. I put Tyler in God’s hands, because I was helpless to him, and when people would ask “what can I do to help” my reply was, please pray for him. I placed my faith in God and I didn’t discriminate any denominations who prayed for him, I just needed those prayers answered. Continuously, doctors after doctors would express to us that it didn’t look good, but I was always calm. Bennie and I would keep those comments to ourselves, for we didn’t want our loved ones to know the grim news. I kept wondering when the dark shadow would leave. Then the day came when Tyler woke up in ICU, he couldn’t talk since he had tubes in every possible place imagined. He tried to communicate with us by writing. He tried to scribble down, “when will I be able to talk”? We told him as soon as those tube came out, well that night he pulled out his ventilator and feeding tubes, and we knew at that moment that our prayers where being answered. Tyler soon left ICU and spent a total of 5 ½ weeks in the hospital. He is now back home, only with outpatient rehab to work on his upper body. We give God all the praise and glory! Tyler is a student at Lenoir Community College in Kinston. He is enrolled in the Automotive Technology Systems Program.

The Tuscarora M/C held a benefit for Tyler on Saturday, October 27th in Snow Hill, N.C. They sold barbeque plates and held a live auction. The band, “Suretta” was on hand for the benefit. Thanks to all who participated and gave their support.

Spooks and Spokes story & photos: Johnnie King

It was a howling good night at Carolina Billiards, November 3rd. It was the first ever, Spooks and Spokes run, put on by Bill Houston. Although Halloween was over for the kids on this particular night, the bikers came out to have a little fun of their own. The bar was decked out with bales of hay and carved pumpkins. There were spiders hanging from the ceiling and cob webs strung. The night was a bit chilly but it didn’t stop atleast 30 riders from participating in the three stop run for best hand. They started out at Carolina Billiards in Wilson, N.C.at 7:30 pm and headed out to The Breeze in Elm City, N.C. to draw their first card and warm up a bit before heading out to Handle Barz in Lucama, N.C. Once again, they had to warm up for a bit before tackling the last leg back to Carolina Billirads by 9:30pm. While they were out riding the run, the rest stayed behind to get the party started. The bar was full of people ready to show the ghosts and goblins how it was done. Bill laid out some Bill’s BBQ, boiled potatoes and corn sticks for everyone, while Gene Ezzell played music. After eating, Bill named the “best monster bike.” Stewart Vester won this award and $25 to go along with it for his ‘Bat Bike.’ Stewert said it was amazing what you can do with old mud flaps when you try. He cut bat wings out of them and mounted them to the front and rear of his bike, placed a small jack-o-lantern on the back, and cut a bat design out and put it on the headlight. Although Kris Wilson didn’t win, you could tell he had put some thought into the design on his bike, as well. Kris put a skull on top of the headlight, a spine right under the headlight and a leg on either side of the bike. Hence, “the skeleton bike” arose. Bill got all the contestants for the costume contest together and let the crowd choose the best costume. The winner of the $25 “Best Costume” went to no other than Connie Coley, dressed as a gypsy. The 50/50 drawing of $85 went to Trish Bass and the winner of the “Best Hand” went to Jeff Jenkins. Jeff drew trip 4’s on the ride and netted a cool $150. The gals decorating the billiards should be given a lot of credit for their hard work in carving all those pumpkins. Paula Garris, Deborah Summerlin and Tina Wilson were the creators of the carved jack-olanterns, as well as, getting the decorations set up. These gals did a great job of decorating and greeting everyone when they came out to party. Bill Houston thanked everyone for attending the party and said that it was a great turn out. However, it should be us thanking him because Bill always sponsors some great runs for the biker community. This year alone, Bill has sponsored an ‘Iron Ass Run’, ‘Tin Butt Run’, ‘Christmas in July Toy Run’, ‘Moonlight Run’, ‘Spooks and Spokes Run’ and the ‘December Toy Run for Tots Ride’. For everyone who has never been to Carolina Billiards, you should stop by, chat with Bill, have a cold one, and let him introduce you to “Wingnut” (the counting dog), AND while you are there, find out when his next run will be.

○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○

Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson held their annual HOG Chapter Toy Run on 11 November 2007. It was a huge turn-out with over 600 motorcycles registering for the bike run. It was estimated that atleast 1500 people were in attendance. Gardner’s Barbeque served lunch and it was great food, as always. The band, “Twist of Fate” was on hand jamming for the crowd. Many nice door prizes were given away, including a Harley-Davidson iron & wood bench, gift certificates to local merchants and a gift certificate from Rocky Mount H-D was won by Randy Robinson to bring his bike in and have it pimped. A 50/50 ticket of $638 was drawn and the big prize, a 2008 1200N Nightster was given away, also. The winner of the bike was Jody Peterson Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Santa and Mrs. Claus rode in the parade that was escorted by the Nash Co. Sheriff’s Dept. through scenic Nash Co. Many toys were collected, as well as, donations for the Toys For Tots. Thanks to all who attended and showed your support! It was a grand success! SANTA & MRS. CLAUS

VETERANS DAY PARADE

Some of those attending the parade to show their support to the VETS

story & photos: Johnnie King On November 11th, the city of Kinston honored the Veterans with a parade. The Edgecombe County Ghost Riders, were honored to be invited to participate in this ceremony, to honor the Veterans of the wars past, as well as, the war our country is currently engaged in. Several riders from around Kinston and the surrounding area also came to ride and show their support to the Veterans of this great nation. To some, war is the empathy of their lives andfrown apon it and the men and women that fight to help us live our lives in the land of the free. But, without these brave men and women our country would not have surrvived as long as it has, with the freedom that we sometimes take for granted in our every day lives. They gave their lives to what they believed in and that is the country they live in, the people that dwell within her borders, and the freedom to choose. Several people forgot about the Veterans of this country on this very important day that was set aside for them after World War I (also known as Amistice Day). Veterans Day is largely intended to thank Veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their sacrafice to their countries national security is appreciated, and to honor those who served - not only those who died Alan Hoffman with Vietnam era LOCH helicopter - have sacraficed and done their duty to protect the country in which we live. This was a day to give our thanks to them and their families for their dedication, their courage, their bravery, and their commitment to pursueing our freedom from tyranny and oppression. After the parade the procession gathered in the park for a speech from the commander of the local VFW, who thanked all who attended. Alan Hoffman from WNCT-TV came to show a Vietnam era LOCH helicopter that was actually used in Vietnam. There were ROTC students and color guard from Kinston High School, as well as, a Marine Color Guard. The Disabled Veterans of America, the Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars set up concession stands and served hot dogs, hamburgers, corn dogs, etc. to the crowd that had come to show their appreciation to all the Veterans of the Armed Forces. We, as Americans, are blessed that we have men and women of their caliber and courage to stand up for our country and offer the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. To the men and women who fought for our freedom and the freedom of our country, I would just like to say, thanks you for the sacrifice you and your families have given to keep this great nation of ours FREE. To the World War I, World War Alan Hoffman (WNCT TV) & Duke II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Gulf War Veterans you are not forgotten in Edgecombe County Ghost Rider. my eyes nor the eyes of this country. You are the unsung heroes of this land... GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

WHY GET INVOL VED IN BIKER’S RIGHTS? INVOLVED By: Vinny Neuman There is an old saying in the bikers’ rights community: “Just because you don’t take an interest in politics, doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you.” Nothing could be more true. We as bikers love the freedoms we have to ride down the road wide open. But those freedoms and many others are constantly being attacked by our state and federal lawmakers. Many legislators now ride, and that helps a lot. But the majority of them don’t ride and that is where the problem lies. This year in North Carolina the Concerned Bikers Association (CBA) and others have been fighting many bills that threaten our freedoms and threaten our safety. First, there was a bill that would outlaw non-DOT (novelty) helmets. How many of you reading this article ride with a non-DOT helmet? I know I do in the hot summer months. That bill was crushed by the bikers’ rights folks in North Carolina. CBA members and others called and emailed their legislators hundreds of times to convince the NC Senate Transportation Committee to vote down that bill. NC CBA members and others also just lobbied for a bill that will provide a defense for anyone ticketed while going through a red light where the traffic signal inductive sensor did not pick up their motorcycle. That is an issue that has effected ever biker at one time or another. The bill passed the NC House and Senate and is currently waiting for the Governor’s signature. The CBA and others are working on several other issues as well. There is gang legislation currently being debated in NC that will label just about every motorcycle organization as a criminal gang. There is also a current NC bill that will reduce the duration of a motorcycle learner’s permit. That bill is clear biker discrimination. Are you, the average rider even aware of all this? If not, this is your wake up call. This is serious business folks and we all need to be involved or we will pay some serious consequences for our apathy. There are several basic, easy, and inexpensive things you can do to help. The first thing you should do is join a motorcyclist rights organization (MRO). It only takes about $25 per year. That will get you in touch with the right people who are on the front lines of these fights. MROs like the CBA in NC and ABATE in SC are the largest and most experienced groups fighting for your rights. Give them a helping hand with a membership. f you would like to take your participation to the next level, attend some MRO chapter meetings. The worst thing that could happen to you is that you will meet some friendly bikers to ride with. The best thing that can happen is that you will meet some life-long brothers and sisters who you will call your best friends. Don’t be embarrasses because you may not be up on your civics knowledge or your understanding of government. MROs will teach you all you need to know about how to lobby. Lobbying is not difficult. Lobbying can be as easy as just sending a basic e-mail to a legislator asking him (her) to support or oppose a biker bill. Please consider helping frame the future of motorcycling for you and your children by getting involved in biker’s rights. See the CBA in North Carolina (www.cba-abatenc.org) and ABATE of SC (www.abatesc.com) in South Carolina.

14th Annual Bachelor’s Toy Run In Loving memeory of Snooks Robins story: Lynn James

On Dec. 1, 2007 Bachelor’s Tavern parking lot was full that day and had over flow into the parking lots next door. There were approximately 200 bikes directed into the parking lot by Clayton Miller and that isn’t counting the cars and trucks. The Bikers left out at 2pm for Ephesus Baptist Church to deliver the toys for the Tar River Baptist Ass. . The toy run was a huge success with three truck loads of toys and $3770 cash donations. They had 50/50 drawing, many door prizes donated to be given away, and a rocking motorcycle (donated by Mike) drawing. There were a lot of things to do that day and Santa was even there to greet the children. Steve, Jimmy, and Randy cooked the pig and an awesome job they did. The gang got together on Friday night and fixed up the famous weenies and bacon; and the shishkebabs that everyone looks for when they get there. This year was the best turn out yet and a beautiful day for the ride. However, it was also a sad time for some of us who knew Snooks, because he passed away in September. Our thoughts and prayers are always with Kitty, and Joshua Robbins. Snooks, along with Charlie Bogey and Danny James started this 14 years ago as a poor boy Toy Run with the help from others such as Donald Perry, Gene Vick and Steve Bachelor. Without these people the Toy Run would not be the success it is today. And it was all for the Kids, they wanted these children to have a Christmas that some of them did not. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all that helped this year with the event. All the bikers, non bikers, sponsors for t-shirts, the cooks, the donators of all door prizes and cash donations (there were so many that it would take up so much space to name the all) ; and Doug Roberts for all he did and the use of Bachelor’s Tavern. world newZ THOUSANDS BID FAREWELL TO WORLD’S GREATEST DAREDEVIL Butte, Montana - Five thousand mourners, including Hollywood icons and sports stars, joined together in an emotional farewell to Evel Knievel as he was laid to rest on 10 December 2007. Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier and actor Mathew McConaughey paid tribute at a memorial service before a private funeral for Knievel. Knievel died at age 69 on 30 November 2007,in Clearwater, Florida after finally succumbing to nearly a three-year bout with the terminal lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The funeral service was held at the in Butte, Montana at the Butte Civic Center, the towns largest indoor venue. The 1960’s and 70’s were the peak of Knievel’s career. He grasped national attention jumping buses and trucks. He even attempted to jump a ‘rocket cycle’ over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho.

The star will reunite with actor pal, Charley Boorman for a motorcycle journey from Cape Horn through South and Central America to California The program follows 2004’s “Long Way Around,” which filmed their adventures as the pair rode 19,000 miles around the world, and 2007’s “long Way Down,” in which they rode from Scotland to Cape Horn.

The series is due to air in 2009.

The city of 32,000, which locals refer to as “Butte, America,” has for the past six years hosted a summer festival called “Evel Knievel Days.” Evel Knievel maintained a lifelong connection to his hometown of Butte, Montana, a former copper mining boomtown in the Rocky Mountains.

HYANiDE Want a 4 wheeler, dirt bike, and snowmobile all wrapped up into one? Then, put the HYANIDE on your list. The Hyanide is a world concept vehicle created by German designers, Oliver Keller and Tillman Schlootz. This year’s competition showcased vehicles made especially for California’s diverse and often rugged topography. Named for its supposed resemblance to a crouching hyena, the Hyanid is designed to run on flexible rubber tread that spans the machine’s entire underside. So if any part of the bottom is touching the ground, the Hyanide should be able to move, no matter how deep the quagmire, no matter how rough the terrain. The tank-like tread consists of 77 identical segments --each made from hard plastic covered with tire rubber --- held together by kevlar rope. Each segment flexes independently, making the tread significantly more limber than if its components were rigid. Not only does this setup help with traction, but it would allow the tank-cum-motorcycle to corner like no other vehicle. Both the front and rear of the Hyanide rotate into a turn, which would give riders extra control while making sharp turns or climbing hills. To drive the vehicle, you’d steer with your hands as well as your feet, and you’d wear special shoes that snap onto the pedals, like on a racing bicycle. The Hyanide currently exists only as a one-fifth-scale model, and Schlootz and Keller have no plans to bring a production version to market. Keep your fingers crossed, though. Hyanide’s unique drivetrain impressed a lot of automotive-industry heavy hitters.

HYANIDE SPECS: Capacity: Two riders Engine: 60hp 500cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder Dimensions: 40(h) x 36(w) x 90(1) in. Weight: 450-650 lbs. (est.) Top Speed: 75-85 mph (est.)

ROLAND ROLAND ROLAND Roland & Sandy

story & photos: Vinney

On Saturday, december 1st. of 2007 an event happened in Sandy Bottom, N.C. that alot of people bet they’d never be able to witness. That event was the 60th birthday party for our good buddy, Roland Taylor. They say that he started riding in the womb - at least that’s how the story goes. The day started around noon with approx. 25 bikes going on a 60 mile ride - everybody said it was a perfect day for riding in this special event. the ride with Roland’s friends arrived back around three & the party began. David cooked a pig & chickens & the meal had all those good country fixins to go with it. As a special surprise, Roland’s wife, Sandy, gave him a new Ford truck - Roland loved it! The party ended up around the fire barrel with Roland’s biker friends toasting a few - actually, quite a few. Happy 60th, Roland - we all love ya! Ya’ll have been great friends & riding partners.
