Good Bye To Ten Bears The roar of valiant steel steeds where heard on December 21st at Carlisle Funeral Home in Tarboro as the family and friends of Duane ‘Ten Bears’ Pitt came together to send him off in real biker style. This was very apparent when 86 bikers arrived one by one to the small parking lot and left with a mighty ROAR that even Duane himself couldn’t help but hear as the procession of bikes pulled out heading to his final resting place. Our sweet gentle friend took his last ride in style as all bikers would want…a hearse pulled by a HARLEY. Allen Floars from Bikers for Christ officiated over the services as Duane was laid to rest, telling of his friend and some of the things they use to get into back in their hay days. A time of carefree living until the day Betty Jean Baker came into his life. Some people live a life time to meet someone that is their true soul mate. Thankfully, Duane and Betty Jean met each other before that time was up because he loved her completely and whole heartedly. His true soul mate, as he was to her. They both shared a love of family, animals, and motorcycles. To visit them at home was to visit with their four legged babies as well. On December 16th her heart and soul was ripped from her in a tragic accident that took Duane not only from her, but from his daughter, mother, father grand kids, and motorcycle community. He was a true Southern gentleman, with a soft easy going manner too him, and a smile that never stopped. Duane never got in a hurry in anything he had to do. If it was worth doing right it will wait for him to start and finish it, with many friendships started along the way. He didn’t like feeling someone might be upset with him and would go out of his way to make amends whether he was wrong or not for to him friends were meant to be kept, but he was a proud man and wouldn’t beg for your friendship either.

story & photos: Johnnie King

Duane was a proud Daddy and an even prouder Grandfather to his 2 beautiful granddaughters. He was so excited of the fact of becoming a grandfather he told everyone, showed pictures of his oldest grandchild with a proud smile and stories to go along with the picture. How he loved being a grandfather and looked forward to spending more time with them. Ten Bears motorcycle family was the Tuscarora MC out of Snow Hill, NC. They had become his brothers on 2 wheels and love and supported the Club and its members. Although he was a mem ber of Tuscarora he had lots of friends that rode that called him brother when seen. Some of those included the Red Devils, Desperadoes, Brotherhood, Veterans, Southern Sin, Dixie Steel, Ghost Riders, Freedom Riders, Dragon Slayers, Bikers for Christ, and many more, as well as, independent riders who all came out to pay their last respects to the biker they called ‘Ten Bears’, a man who always had a smile on his face, a kind word to all, and a love in his heart. This world became little darker, a little sadder, and a little colder as we said good bye to this true gentle soul. Ride in Peace dear friend, on streets of gold as you keep a heavenly eye on the rest of us until we meet again.

REST IN PEACE TEN BEARS

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes

We are about to enter our 10th year of packing care packages for our deployed troops. It has been an amazing journey for us. We have always been a loving, caring team of volunteers, who may have different political, religious, cultural beliefs and practices, but we are able to join together to work on this common goal and mission. We have seen students graduate, get married, get commissioned, have babies and know they are forever in the foundation of our nation. We have volunteers battle illnesses, and some have passed on. We have hugged too many troops to count! We also have hugged family members and held them in their grief, their sorrow and their pain. We have cried many tears of joy, along with those of sadness. The joys have far outweighed the sorrows. We are all bound with a common love and respect for those who serve our country and stand solidly behind those military members. We do not spend money on volunteer banquets, teeshirts, or coffee mugs. Our rewards are those notes, videos, photos and hugs from our troops. On a personal note, I would like to say thank you to our team for your hard work and dedication, for your patience, and for your support.

6

We would like to invite anyone interested in joining our team. If you can volunteer even one or two days each month, it would help. We need clerical help, and help with sorting, organizing and other tasks. Please email or call us for information. Thank you so much for your continued support! Kitty Wall

story & photos: Blue Star Bud

Despite the rainy day, over a dozen kind-hearted riders came out in the gloom to celebrate the life of Kitty Wall, who lost her long battle with cancer & to show their support for Brittany Wall, Kitty’s daughter. Brittany works at Cyclemax in Wilson, and with the help of her co-worker Dalton Leisey, organized the ride to honor the memory of her beloved mother. Dalton called on Chris McLaugain from the Left Lane Riders to spread the word & invite other members to the event. There were food & drinks available, and the Cyclemax staff greeted everyone who came into the store with a smile & a handshake. Even though the turn-out was smaller than hoped for, because of the weather, everyone was happy to be there to donate, ride, remember how brave Kitty was, and give Brittany a hug. Thanks to The Left Lane Riders, Cyclemax & everyone who helped raise $300 to make Brittany’s Christmas a little brighter. No matter what brand or style of bike they ride, the motorcycle community is made up of kind & generous people, and I’m proud to be a part of it. Brittany, unfortunately is having to relocate because of her financial struggle. If anyone would still like to come by Cyclemax and make a donation, she would be more than grateful. She thanks you all from the bottom of her heart.

Motor Maid News S.C. Motor Maids in Marion, S.C. On November 8th, the SC Motor Maids had a very important task. We loaded up our motorcycles from different areas of South Carolina and headed to Marion. We had the privilege to take part in the Marion Veterans Parade. Supporting our Veterans is very dear to our hearts as many Americans. It was a very cold morning, about 29 degrees, but by the time we arrived to line up by the museum it had warmed up to be just a little chilly. The atmosphere was electric though, watching all the bands, tractors, cars and motorcycle groups all coming in to show their support for our Veterans! It’s heartwarming to see so many people come together for such an important event.

Motor Maid News the Motor Maids Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Dodge City Kansas The President of the Motor Maids Susan Gibson received a request for the Motor Maids to be the color guard for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans from Kansas, at the Dodge City 300 Centennial celebration. The Motor Maids was so excited to have this prestigious honor to welcome home the Heroes of the Vietnam War.

I also had the honor of talking to several other veterans, welcoming them home and thanking them for their service and thanking their families for their sacrifice. The veterans told us, that when they were coming home from Vietnam they were told to remove their uniforms, for their safety. One Veteran told me, when he saw the troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and that people were applauding them as they walked through the airports. He said that his heart was filled with pride, but a part of him was sad, that he never received that kind of welcome home from Vietnam. During that time, the Vietnam Vets were often treated badly and unfairly due to the unpopular nature of the war. I have to say this with pride that the American soldiers believed in their government and served bravely to protect us back home.

On July 2 at the Dodge City Civic centre a special Vietnam Veterans’ Welcome Home ceremony was held. The Presentation of the Colours was conducted by members of the Motor Maids, an organization of women motorcyclists that began back in the 1940s. Vets whose residence was in Kansas at the time of the war or who currently live in Kansas were eligible to receive a special medallion and certificate. There were 9 Motor Maids from OH, KY, VA, CO, and KS, two of which were veterans CO and VA.

If by chance you are able to talk to any of the Motor Maids that attended this wonderful event, you would hear similar experiences, from each and every Motor Maid. A few of those Motor Maids had family members that serviced in Vietnam as well.

I’m a Virginia Motor Maid and a Vietnam Era Veteran, I served in the Army from 1969-1982, and being a woman during that time, you had to volunteer to be transferred to Vietnam. Which I did volunteer several times, but was turned down for the assignments, because President Nixon wasn’t sending any troops to Vietnam, except combat troops.

I know that some states have done this event, but from a Veteran’s point of view, I would like to see this event across every state in the US to Welcome Home our Vietnam Veterans’. To show them that our country is proud of their service and stand behind each and every one of them for serving their country in time of need!!!

It was such an honor to finally see our Vietnam Veterans’ get the Welcome Home, they all so deserve. To watch each Vietnam Veteran walk across the stage to receive their special medallion and certificate and a long overdue “Welcome Home,” was touching. There was a husband and wife that both serviced in Vietnam, the husband had lost a leg and the wife is frail and needed help onto the stage for her medallion and certificate. After the ceremony, the Motor Maids were invited to have lunch with the veterans’. I walked over to the table of the husband and wife to welcome them home, and also thanked them for their service and hugged them both. The wife put her head on my shoulder for a long while and when they looked at me, the biggest smiles of appreciation came across their faces, it brought tears to my eyes, and I was left speechless. Very few words said, but the expression on their faces spoke volumes of words.

Let us as a country, never forget to Welcome Home our Veterans’.

Article Written by Ellen Taylor a proud Army Veteran and Virginia Motor Maid

I have a challenge for everyone reading this article, the next time you see someone wearing a hat, t-shirt, vest, or jacket that says “I’m a Vietnam Veteran,” please go up to them and Welcome them Home, and experience the gratitude for yourself!!!

Durham HOG chapter’s 23rd annual

Salvation Army toy run

Rom

November 22, 2014 was the Durham HOG Chapter’s 23rd Annual Salvation Army Toy Run. We have donated so much food, toys and cash to the Salvation Army through the years they have added a plaque naming their donation room after our HOG Chapter. Needless to say we are all pretty proud of our accomplishments through the years for helping the Durham Salvation Army. Saturday morning was sunny but quite chilly as we arrived at Rommel’s Durham Harley Davidson dealership. We went to work setting up the registration table and had several ladies signing up riders and organizing the motorcycle line-up. We soon had our chefs’ firing up the grill to cook a load of hot dogs to feed all the hungry folks after the toy run. I must say these guys do their very best and even put the ‘burn’ on a few of them for those that like ‘em that way! We had a low turn out this year, approximately 35 riders. One gentleman rode all the way from Statesville!! We need more people like him, after all, it’s all for the kids! After a short time the sun was warming us up a little and best of all the Durham County Sheriff’s motor unit showed up, two on bikes and a lead car. They got out and socialized with us for a while before it was time to go. (I think they knew we had coffee and doughnuts inside Rommel’s dealership for them??) At precisely 12:30 we pulled out of Rommel’s parking lot heading east on the back roads of Durham County circling back to the northern part of the county and then out on the western end of town to Hillandale Road to Main Street and ending at the Salvation Army on Liberty Street. This is the very best ride we do all year, as we never put a foot down once we start to ride. The motorcycle officers clear the way for us, blocking intersections so we never have to worry about traffic. It is a big rush to ride with those guys and a ride I try never to miss! Arriving at the Salvation Army the HOG elves go quickly to work unloading the Rommel truck full of toys we brought for them. Once we had unloaded the truck we were able to present a sizable check to Captain Anthony Juliana. Some of the money was collected that morning from riders but the majority of the money we donated was raised through our annual bike raffle that we give away at our bike show every year in March. We sell raffle tickets for the bike give-away during ‘off-riding season’ so we can give back to our community. After our work at the Salvation Army was finished we loaded up and headed back to Rommel’s for those tasty hot dogs! This is a great event and a wonderful ride…but, it isn’t just the ride - it’s about helping to provide Christmas and food for so many children that otherwise would not have Christmas gifts from Santa on Christmas morning or a Christmas meal. Rommel’s Harley Davidson Dealership provided a pickup truck so we could load it up with a big load of Christmas toys for all the good little girls and boys! I’m so happy that I could be a part of this event! We made sure that there will be some happy kiddies on Christmas morning thanks to Rommel’s HD and the Durham HOG Chapter 3382! Merry Christmas! Gail Sherron Durham HOG Chapter 3382 Activities Officer

19th Annual Inna Fitts memorial toy run

Behind Barz

On November 15, 2014, about 40 bikers braved the chilly temperatures to participate in the 19th Annual Ina Fitts Memorial Toy Run. This toy run is sponsored by the Salvation Army of Johnston County with logistical and supportive assistance provided by the Triangle Travelers for Jesus, the triangle area chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association. The toy run benefits the Salvation Army of Johnston county. In mid-October, toy collection boxes were placed in the showrooms of three supporting dealership partners for 2014. Capital PowerSports (Wake Forest), Garcia Moto (Raleigh) and Team PowerSports (Garner) promoted the Toy Run and encouraged their customers to donate new toys for the Toy Run to be given to the Salvation Army of Johnston County. Each dealership filled a large box with toys, or more than filled it in one case. Each rider brought a toy as well. In fact, most riders brought more than one toy. The ride began in Wake Forest at Capital PowerSports with Santa leading the way on his motorcycle. He reported that he got quite a number of curious looks from children of adult age scrambling for their cameras as he traveled through downtown Raleigh on his way to the ride. From Capital PowerSports Santa led the ride to Garcia Moto to pick up the toys there and then on to Team PowerSports in Garner. More riders joined at each stop. From Team PowerSports Santa and his bike took second place to the deputies of the Wake County and Johnston County Sheriff’s Departments who escorted the ride to WalMart in Smithfield. Additional bikers joined the ride there as well, some from Greenville. The bikers had time to get toys if they had not already done so. Many riders shopped and got multiple additional toys to donate. Numerous shoppers in the WalMart parking lot came to see Santa and have their children’s pictures made with him. Smithfield Police officers led the ride from WalMart. The riders took a detour riding through the parking lot of the Outlet Center where young and old shoppers alike waved excitedly at Santa on his motorcycle, to be picked up again by the police escort officers as they exited the shopping center and on to the Salvation Army in downtown Smithfield. Once at the Salvation Army, the bikers unloaded toys from 2 SUV’s and a large car trunk placing them under the Christmas Tree. What a sight to see all the gifts under that tree which had no gifts under it when the group arrived. The staff of the Salvation Army hosted a lunch and some of the children provided a Christmas skit and sang carols for the bikers. John Fitts widow of Ina Fitts, spoke thanking the bikers for their participation and their donations of the many toys. Major Becky Gagne of the Salvation Army expressed much thanks for the bountiful donations and reported the toys would be used to meet the wishes of those children whose names were not taken from the various Angel Trees placed in the community. A picture collage of the toy run has been presented to each of the partnering dealerships: Capital PowerSports, Garcia Moto and Team PowerSports. Many thanks for the support and participation of these three motorcycle dealerships. Plans are underway for the 20th annual Ina Fitts Memorial Toy Run in 2015 to include additional dealership partners.

Hometown HD Toy Run 15 Nov 2014 “ Beyond Serving, Compassion in the Community” Hometown Harley-Davidson of Winterville, NC held their annual Salvation Army Toy Run November 15, 2014. The toy run is to benefit less fortunate children during the holiday season. As I walked and captured precious moments of such a great cause on that almost below freezing day, I realized that most of the riders were absent due to the weather circumstances. What I did observe and capture that day touched my heart in such a special way. I met some pretty awesome US Veterans who not only went to war and saw gruesome things as they served our country that we should cherish but they were also serving here in our own local community to help these less fortunate children. As a rider myself and granddaughter of a Navy Vet, I was honored to have the opportunity to meet a few veterans. Not only serving our great country and spending endless hours away from their loved ones they too serve here at home. Each toy run in and out of this state always has a special story behind it. Not only was that day cold and windy it didn’t stop riders from helping. Put yourself in the shoes of a less fortunate child/family or even that Veteran who served for you to have the freedom to choose what you want to do or help do? Step back for a minute and ask yourself, “what have I done to help someone LESS fortunate than myself? Have I given or helped someone who really needed it without judgment?, or have I just gone on about my day thinking that homeless man sitting on the side of the road is a drunk or just wants my money for drugs or booze? When times are tough, I have to admit that “BIKERS” dig deeper and give more which makes me proud to be a rider in the BIKER community. We all need to help one another no matter what, pick each other up instead of pushing each other down. We are never promised how the middle of our life story will be but we all know God has our paths laid out from Day 1.

First Annual

Kinston bike & Car Show On November 22, 2014 The Unspoken Sons M/C sponsored the First Annual Bike and Car show at Pearson Park in Kinston, NC. Here Bikers and Car Enthusiasts gathered to share the engines and wheels they love and raise money for The Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Green Counties. The Partnership for Children is a non-profit organization that provides funding and support to local programs that serve children and their families. Their strategies include high quality pre-kindergarten programs, health initiatives, mentoring opportunities for children and parents and educational enrichment for all who impact children and their successful growth. Participants from as far away as Sanford and Wilmington rode in to give support and enter their bikes and automobiles in the show. Jason Pierce gave a moving live concert for all to enjoy. You could hear his heart in every piece he played and his love for the children he was helping. Now in addition to the custom built bikes and cars there were some very interesting contests held. The Pin-Up Contest, the Tattoo Contest and the Beard Contest were held with audience participation in choosing the winners. The Beard Contest was the most interesting as the judges were checking for the softest, most kissable, finest shape, to see if they were scented or not, how long they had the beard and what type of care they gave to their beard. Mr. George had the beard with all the best qualifications to win and interestingly I believe he used Suave to care for his fine chrome beard! The Pin-Up Contest was for the best, most original lady. The contestants were very beautiful young ladies, but Ms. Mandi Baldwin won as the Pin-Up Gal! The Tattoo Contest had the contestants show off their ink, tell what it was about and why they had it placed. The reasons for obtaining the tattoos were fascinating. Mr. Nasty won the tattoo contest. The Kid’s Choice Car Award was won by Mr. Steven Shirley. There were many other winners in several classes for Motorcycles and Automobiles. Each winner received a trophy and bragging rights. What a beautiful day where many people came together to give to those in need. Thank you Unspoken Sons M/C for the contributions, love and kindness for all the children. USSFFUSS!

~ Winter Weather Riding Tips ~ By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys.

It’s winter in North Carolina, and you know what that means for the weather: cold, warm, hot, cool, rain, drizzle, snow, ice, melting, fog, mist, blizzard, and just about any other possibility. Here are some safety tips for winter riding: ********************************************************* 1. Check the forecast. Weather patterns are unpredictable in many parts of the country, and just because it is warm today doesn’t mean it won’t snow tomorrow. Bookmark your local forecast on weather.com or your local TV news channel and check it often. Many of the websites even offer severe weather notifications—emails or even phone calls to let you know of major changes. That way, you won’t be caught unprepared if you’re out riding for more than just a few hours.

5. If conditions are icy…stay home! If you’re away from home, look for a warm, dry place to stay until the roads clear up. Too many motorists think that having a 4-wheel drive car makes them safe in all road conditions. (Having 4-wheel drive does NOT mean having 4-wheel stop.) As a result, you’re more likely to have a car spin out in front of you, or fail to stop in time to avoid hitting you from the rear. Best not to risk your safety with all the crazy drivers out there.

2. In light rain or snow…be more cautious than you are on dry pavement. In general, riding on a light dusting of fresh snow is not very different from riding in drizzle. Avoid sudden movements, quick braking, or fast acceleration. Complete your turn before accelerating.

6. If there is fog or mist…help others see you better. In the daytime, turn on your fog lights. At night or very dim days, turn on fog lights and your low-beam headlights. Never use your high beams—they reflect off the fog and actually make it more difficult to see. Wear high-visibility or reflective clothing. Remember that motorists may forget to turn on their lights, so be more vigilant than usual. Take off your sunglasses, and put on your yellow glasses—they increase contrast and let you see better in fog.

3. Clean your helmet visor. You are wearing a helmet, right? When the visor gets dirty or grimy, drops of water or flakes of snow will collect on the surface and distort your vision. If possible, use a rain repellant, such as Rain-X (check the visor specs to make sure it won’t cloud or damage it, or test on a small edge), which will allow the wetness to slide right off. 4. In heavy snow…don’t follow the leader. When a car drives on snow, it creates tracks of ice due to friction and compaction. Look for the parts of the road that have not been driven over. Reduce your speed below that of the surrounding traffic—cars can handle the slick spots more easily than a bike can.

26

7. Don’t rely on the skills of other drivers. My friend was driving a car home from work late at night during a snowfall that was so heavy it covered the road, obscuring all markings… including the center divider. It was just my friend and one other driver on a four-lane highway. My friend followed the other car, assuming that the driver was more familiar with the road. She followed him for ten miles, and then they both went right off the road into a ditch. To this day, my friend says, “It didn’t look right, but I figured he knew where he was going. ” She should have relied on her own judgment. RIDE SAFE!

Never Judge A Bo

Bonehead Bryan Harris Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do! We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts!

That old adage is true... Never, Ever Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

28

www.Behind

ook By It's Cover Shortly after meeting Bryan Harris, he summed up his goals by saying “I’m trying to get my life back together.” I’m sure a lot of us can relate to those words. Before I let Bryan tell his story, I’ll tell you what I know about him. He’s a dedicated Dad. A couple of months ago he went to Illinois and stayed in a tent, in the rain for 3 days just to be close to his kids. Recently he rode the ‘Tail of the Dragon’ with his Dad because Pop is getting along in his years, and they wanted to get in one more good ride together. Bryan is a Navy Veteran, and works in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He misses a lot of riding because of his work schedule, and never complains. We all love to ride our bikes, but I’ve got to admire the ethics of a man who puts his family & job first, then rides when he can. Bryan may look like he’s right out of Overhaulin’ or OC Choppers, but inside, he’s as good as Mom’s Apple pie. Now here’s Bryan’s story in his own words. My name is Bryan Harris and I’m originally from South Hill VA. I joined the Navy when I was 17, just 3 months after graduating high school. I was onboard the USS Nassau from 1996 – 2001 where we did operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Africa & other places. In 2004 I transferred from recruiting duty and reported onboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) where I was the Assistant Leading Petty Officer of Weapons G-4 Division. I can still remember times of lying in my rack and hearing F-18’s take off & land on the flight deck, hundreds of miles from land. Off the coast of Iraq the berthing area never got below 100 degrees and there were at least 250 men living in that cramped space. I got a real sense of what was going on the world being on that ship, in the middle of nowhere, watching F-18’s launch with a 2,000 lb. payload and coming back empty. The flight ops went on day & night during some missions. I first crossed the Equator as a Pollywog, and on the return trip as a Shellback. If you don’t understand that, ask a Sailor or a Marine. Sadly the Enterprise was my last duty station in the Navy. I currently work for Dominion Power as a Hydro Dam Operator here in Roanoke Rapids, NC. I have 2 kids, Kourtney & Michael who live in Illinois, and I drive there to see them every chance I get. My first Harley was a 1994 Fatboy, and my current bike is a 2007 Street Glide. It’s got a custom paint job, but don’t let the good looks fool you, I ride a lot, and I’m definitely NOT a ‘fair weather rider’. My road name is ‘Bonehead’, but some folks have suggested that I change it to ‘Rainman’ since I usually get soaked when I go for a ride! One of my personal goals is to ride my scooter from the NC coast to the Northern California coast, and back. Good story brother. Bryan recently joined the NC 15- 3 Chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and we’re all proud to have him as a member.

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

I sniffed thousands and thousands of hoomans over the years. Some had interesting smells. Sometimes I wonder where they just came from on their steel horses. My first group ride was with Raleigh H.O.G. in support of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I met about a hundred hoomans that day, and my driver knew many of them by their first name. When we started riding with veterans and veteran groups, I learned that many of them have names that aren’t regular hooman names. They call them “road names.” My driver sometimes refers to them as call-signs from when he served in the military. It seems that not all bikers are familiar with road names. My road name is on my saddle, and new friends I meet sometimes laugh about “IronMutt” until my driver explains how I got that road name. What’s interesting is how many hoomans got their road names. Me? Mine was given to me during “Charlie Mike” by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association NC 15-1. It was August 2010 and this was the first time CVMA planned a ride of 1,000 miles in 24 hours. This was the first endurance memorial ride called,

Glock

Cowboy

“Charlie Mike” and there were 14 bikes. My driver and I didn’t know anyone in the group. I think those veterans wondered if we were really going to complete this certified IronButt ride (SaddleSore 1000). I sniffed several new friends and all of them had road names. “StrangeMan” was the leader, and he’s a straaaaange hooman. “Quiet Man” – he’s quiet. “Dagger”, who was known as “NoName” and “SpokesMan” when I first sniffed him. There were many more: Boats, RipCord, Wizard (and I started referring to him as Weeeeeeeeezard after Charlie Mike III), Glock, Hooch, WiseGuy, Izzy, Iceman and TexasGirl, Gundy and Peaches, and Cowboy. About 23 hours into the ride, we stopped at a gas station east of Dunn, NC to top off our tanks and complete the ride. StrangeMan pointed at me, howled, gave a thumbs up, and yelled “IronMutt!” Dagger echoed it, and when we arrived at the final stop in Lillington, I officially had a road name. I went on to do two more Charlie Mikes with CVMA and sniffed many more bikers. I sniffed some hoomans with road names that seem to be a variation of their name or nickname, like Gundy, Smitty, Big E, Dutch, Red, Sully, Tater, Some road names are a reminder of something a person did or their personality. For example, I first sniffed Thomas at a memorial service for James McClamrock (PFC, US Army, KIA 7 Sept 2010, Iraq). We know him as Thomas. He rides a GoldWing that has nearly every electronic gadget, and he has to get plugged in to his bike. It wasn’t long before he became known as “G.E.” (short for General Electric). Several months after meeting him, we rode across the USA with G.E.

Big E

CHEWY The Biker Dog: w

Sniffed That

d Names Then there is “One More”. She is a Behind Barz photographer and she takes lots and lots of photos at events – probably more than my driver, if you can believe that. Oftentimes when she takes group photos, she wants to take several, so she’d say “Wait! One More!” People would reply “One More!” Soon, that became her road name, and it fit perfectly! Sometimes, it’s not clear at first how they got their road name. For example, when we first met Ol’ Bill, he was known as “Jammer.” We knew he was in the Air Force and we learned he worked with electronics, so my driver assumed for several months that maybe his specialty in the Air Force was electronic warfare (jamming electronic receivers). At one of the many PGR missions that Ol’ Bill and I were attending, my driver and I could hear Ol’ Bill’s stereo on his Harley while we were rolling on the highway. At a stop, we learned that “Jammer” came from him jammin’ to tunes while rolling. Jammer was also known as OB (short for Ol’ Bill, I think). I think after he joined CVMA, OB became OB1 – maybe because of his wisdom; maybe because he’s the first.

Schmuck

And, lastly, there are road names in which we don’t know the story behind it: Schmuck, Cuffy, Bonzo, LTL Mech, Krzywuf, Snapshot, Kez, Maps, Speed Racer, Road Runner, and many more than I can’t count on my paws.

Bonzo

QuietMan

Do you have a road name? If so, is there a story behind it? If you want to share your story, you can go to the Behind Barz Facebook page or to my Facebook page (Chewy Biker Dog) and post your story – start it with “Doobie and IronMutt, this is how I got my road name:” so that we know that you are responding to this Behind Barz article. We’d love to read about it!

Dagger & Wizard If you’re riding in the cold, bundle up. Be careful out there! There ain’t too many of us on the roads, so the cagers aren’t looking for us.

Injured?

NC Policy Limits and Need for UIM Many motorists believe that simply having liability insurance on their car, truck or motorcycle means that they are covered for all expenses that may result from an accident. However, a deeper look into the dense forest referred to as insurance law will reveal that this often is not the case. Under North Carolina law, an insured driver must only maintain a minimum policy of $30,000.00 to cover bodily injuries that result from an accident. Additionally, the insured driver must maintain a minimum policy of $60,000.00 to cover all bodily injuries if multiple parties are involved, and a minimum policy of $25,000.00 to cover the property damage to your vehicle. The appropriate question to ask now is, “What does this all mean?” While the answer to that question is a complicated one, the answer is essentially this. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident through no fault of your own, be it car, truck or motorcycle, and sustain injuries, the at-fault drivers insurance policy will control the amount of recovery you may seek for your personal injuries or property damages. As a motorcycle owner, the minimum policy of $30,000.00 should be especially concerning, due to the increased possibility of suffering a serious injury in an automobile accident. Medical expenses can surpass $30,000.00 in the blink of an eye, leaving the injured innocent party stuck with all of the excess medical bills. However, you can protect yourself with what is known as Underinsured Motorist Coverage “UIM”. UIM may be obtained through your insurance policy and its purpose is to help prevent being forced to bear the burden of paying excess medical bills that may not be covered under the at-fault’s driver insurance policy. UIM coverage is important for all motorcycle owners, not only to protect themselves, but to help protect their family members as well. To learn more about UIM coverage and specific policies, please contact your motorcycle insurance provider today.

hello my happy riders from the mind of big ed

Hello you happy people!!

What an adventure I’ve been on this last past few weeks! I broke my wisdom tooth, about the time it started getting cold out. I’ve found that riding in cool wind for several hours don’t help matters much with a broke tooth. You see, I’m a grinner. I love sharing a wave and a smile while I’m riding and I see fellow bikers on the road. I’m also a middle finger giver. Middle finger giver you ask...yes...I always wave when I see fellow bikers on the road but when I know you see my wave but your nose is stuck so far up your a$$ that you don’t wave back, then BAM!!! I’m flying you the (you are number one sign). Its just common courtesy. It’s more then that to me, also. It’s fellow biker respect and love bros and sisters. So, if you cant show me that then why do I care if a high flying bird offends...I Don’t!!! But back to my story... Yes, a broke wisdom tooth and cold air don’t mix! I went to Edenton N.C. from Dudley to go see a man about a dog. It’s a 2 hour trip one way. The sun was out and the evening was beautiful. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to do some two wheeling. It was wonderful, I do love eastern N.C., the trees, the rivers, the little glimpses of small towns along the way. I love to see kids playing outside and stop what they are doing as I pass by, then they wave as I pass by. So, of course I gas the throttle just a bit more to watch them get excited. I got to my destination and after I started returning my way back home. The temperature had dropped a fair piece and this really didn’t bother me none too much, but as the sun got closer to setting I could feel the air rushing in to my mouth and the sides of my jaw. This was causing an issue, I thought to myself. No problem right? Just keep your mouth shut. But this, too, is an issue due from my TMJ I have with my jaw. I have to pop it like you do your knuckles after awhile or I get a bad headache. Man, as the minutes rolled by, the pain set in. Now I was in trouble.

I could tell that I was without any choice. I had to go to the dentist because the following day I couldn’t open my mouth. It had swollen the side of my jaw shut. I’m sure this wasn’t a problem for some of the guys I work with, being that I love to sing while I work and talk junk to them all day every day. Well, as you are reading this now I’m high on hydrocodones cause I got the tooth removed this morning and thank goodness I did! Thanks also to Colleen my Girlfriend cause she had to drag me in to do it. I hate dentists...not as a person...but as them having to work on me..lol I should be road ready in just a week or so then back to two wheels and grinning as always and passing waves and smiling and a few high flying number ones, back to my old self... I hope to see you too!

So, tell old man winter he ain’t slowing us down...cause I will be seeing you Behind Barz...... Big Ed (2 TIMER)
