fl2nd annual pig pickin for autism Saturday, May 11th. The Rock Shop, Fayetteville N.C.
Story & Photoz: Blue Star Bud
Members of the North Carolina Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association chapters and the biker community in general helped support the Autism Society of Cumberland County by attending the 2nd Annual Pig Pickin’ for Autism benefit at the Rock Shop in Fayetteville, NC. The CVMA NC-15 chapters donated over $250.00 for this worthy cause. I’d like to thank, and mention all of our members and Auxiliary members who attended, enjoyed the great BBQ, and interacted with the kids, but space & memory don’t permit that. But I do want to thank those that I can for being there & supporting all individuals within the Autism Spectrum : CC Seriff, XO Stars, Mama Jarhead, Marky-Mark, Fox Himself, Tonya, Dan, Tuk, Bunny, B.B., Pops, Roadrage, Flip Flops, Maps, Em A Loo, Stephanie, George & Carole. Bless your hearts. Deserving the lions share of the credit for a great time are Mr. Andrew Brown, Ms. Sylvia Adamczyk, and ASCC Board President Ms. Anna Finch. These wonderful folks are amazing, I salute them.

Biker Wedding
Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club sponsored a Fund Raiser on June 15, 2013. The gates opened at Noon. There was fine grilled food, drinks, a live auction, 50/50 raffle, and a Korn Hole Tournament. Many M/C, R/C, M/M and independent riders attended and gave donations. ALL of the proceeds were donated to Kornbred’s family.
There is great sadness and loss when a biker goes down. May there be peace and comfort for the family while they go through this time of grief. TFFT.

May 11, 2013, will always be a special day for scott and Vicky as they pledged their love for each other at the Wilson Chapter Red Devil’s Club house. The simple yet beautiful decorations of silk and roses at the alter and the large white mums with baby’s breath and greenery in mason jars with ribbons that lined the aisle and hung from black display hangers. Ms. Vicky just glowed with her love for Scott and the excitement of a new life as man and wife. Scott just beamed as he watched her walk down the aisle in her beautiful white gown like any proud man would. Many people worked hard to make this a special and beautiful day for the wonderful couple. food was served and music filled the air as many M/C, R/C and M/M came to celebrate the start of a new life with them. Congratulations and God’s blessings on you with your new life as biker man and wife.

PTSD PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What is this??? PTSD is when a person goes through an event or circumstance that is outside of the usual range of human experiences. This may include war, rape, crime-related events, assault, robbery, mugging, massacres, earthquakes, flooding, hurricane, volcanic eruptions, childhood sexual abuse, kidnapping, hostage situations, prisoner of war, living with someone who is an addict, accidents and other sad situations. To have PTSD does NOT mean you are crazy and need to be locked up at the coo-coo house. Any situation a person goes through has an effect on them. There is a disorganizing and distressing impact on a person’s way of thinking and behaving as well as issues relating to people when a person goes through a traumatic situation. The PTSD response to the situation may begin days, weeks, or even years after the event.
BARZ
Exposure to traumatic events will trigger an immediate stress reaction that ranges from denial and unresponsiveness to acute physical, psychological, emotional and behavioral symptoms. There may be hypervigilance, guilt, dissociation experiences (losing a sense of reality), avoiding triggers (where it happened for example), having flashbacks, lack of sleep, nightmares, pain, so many more things will happen as a person does their best to deal with the memory of the situation that happened. Many people have PTSD and having someone to talk to is one way that helps. There are many counselors, pastors, clinics (VA Clinic if you are a veteran) to help. Some may prescribe medications to help you as you work through the memory of the traumatic situation. Asking for help for PTSD is not a sign of weakness but of strength.
We all have areas we need help in; talk to someone, pray, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Country Boys 1st annual wounded
The Poker Run that we had on April 6th was a benefit that gave all proceeds to the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program. The idea came from my friend Robert Furr. After acquiring Country Boys Quick Stop in October, I suggested to Robert that I wanted to have a Poker Run there to benefit a good cause. Because he and I feel strongly about how our heroes are often overlooked and underappreciated, Robert suggested that we do something to help those who have fought for our freedoms. After doing some research, I learned that only about 60% of donations to Wounded Warriors Project actually get to our Vets due to overhead and administrative costs, while virtually 100% of donations sent to Virginia Wounded Warrior Program go to our local heroes.
14
The original date was March 30th, but due to the impending weather, we changed it to April 6th. It was still cold but we had about 62 bikes show up with members of Exiled, Muddy Waters, Blue Knights, Vindicated, and many other individual riders. The date change caused a big problem for many of those who had volunteered but were unable to accommodate the new date. If it weren’t for Robert and Tammy Furrs’ kids stepping in to help (Isaac Furr, Caitlyn Furr, Megan Little, Ryan Little), we simply couldn’t have done it. Those kids worked tirelessly day and night! Robert and Tammy stayed up without sleep for 2 days, cooking, preparing and serving. They also paid out of their own pocket, a

Thanks to Doobie and Vinney of Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine for being a part of this great event! 2013.5 AKA Breakout By: Mikee Joe Vicari
LILA - Wilson, N.C.
Zachary Ruppe
Back in the seventies the disco revolution of freestyle dancing coined the word ‘breakdance’. Outward promiscuity lowered its bump onto the mainstream groove, ZZ Top junkies were on the move, motorcycle gangs remained territorial pitbulls, chain-driven affordability seized the day, and oversized brake drums were on their way out. In 1982 bailiff American Machine and Foundry ended their shaky thirteen year pursuit. Released from the old-scholars roar and suffocating courtroom, the colossal steel magnet was exonerated. Out of tune, AMF laid down their losses and settled for a mere severance pay. Across the globe Japanese industrialists dropped kicked us with its ying-yang tactical isometrics. This sparked a segway for reaganomics to block foreign motorcycle imports with stiffer tariffs. In less than five years, having gained full control, majority share holder Harley-Davidson went public in 1985 with its aspiring belt driven thirteen-forty and new softail lineup. Suddenly supply and demand had a new marketing scam, WWW was not a professional wrestling network, Elvis impersonators are now parachuting, and the HD tattoo arm of loyalty remained auspiciously venerated. Throughout Americas blacktop roadways the echo of Harley-Davidson continues to liberate its banner of authenticity across this earths tapestry. Harley-Davidson the all-american icon and trend setter of motorcycle mania has wowed us again. Today more than ever the dream catcher of individuality, unquestionably, and without a doubt, has captured center-stage exponentially. Two thousand thirteen point-five aroused us with its undeniable bipolar eroticism; heading upward with its chain driven crank, clanking one notch at a time, one jerk at a time, reaching within that slow sway forward, that carefree head rush downward, thrusting onward with full-throttle sensationalism, convoluting each loopity-loop and ultimate climatic interlude for more. Harley-Davidson wearing its iconic ‘Number One’, boldly featured its mid year 110th anniversary arrival by unmanning its new lawbreaker. Only this cellmate rocks hard with its guitar slung low having breakout integrity. At the top of Harley-Davidsons most wanted list is the son of disobedience, AKA the ‘Breakout’. Prospectors are awestruck to clutch into its aluminous vein, mooring its prophetic aftermath, unmistakably hooked on its unruly and addicting revivifications. Ok, let us get up close and personal with Harley-Davidsons newest gangbuster; stretching out its triple-trees at 37° baggers and buyers beware of the ‘Breakout’ with its two-forty 18 inch mind blowing chopped rear fixation, its impressive 3.5 one-thirty 21 inch salute, its low slung poetic utterance, and formidable sixteen-ninety 103 cubic inch breakout performance package. No ifs, but when you mount the Breakout, you will covet its intimidating bare bones no rules and charismatic breakaway hardtail lure.
Greyson Perry Wendell, N.C. 16
So what is it that warrants insubordination and lawlessness to breakout? Deep inside we all have a rebellious nature to explore. Turning the other cheek is for the meek and altogether Greek for some of us who seek the polarity of extreme pleasure. Looking to be wowed? Go for it, breakout of your cage, and check out Harley-Davidson’s newest therapist the Breakout.

Dragon Slayers 2013 Annual Fundraider The date April 27th , the event was the annual fund raiser of The Dragon Slayers motorcycle club. This year was special because it is the beginnings of what many hope will be a wonderful weekend camp. The Dragon Slayers have teamed up with FFAAFF, (firefighters assisting armed forces families) to build a weekend retreat for our wounded soldiers. They hope to bring in at least four soldiers, staying in cabins, horseback riding, archery, shooting, campfires and a cookout. The camp will play a small part in the healing process while on the road of recovery. The money that was collected will start the funding of the cabins. Everyone was worried about the weather, being overcast and cool, but then as the military clubs started rolling in the clouds cleared away and the sun warmed the air. Freedom Biker Church started cooking hotdogs and hamburgers and the free BBQ was getting ready, it became apparent God was smiling down on the day, it turned out beautiful. There were many vendors and 3 bands during the day. Yankee Moonshine did a great job opening up the day; Ryan King took the stage next and as always made us all pay attention and sing along. High Voltage was the last band of the day and also did a great job carrying us into the evening ending with fire works. After the fireworks there was a burnout contest paying $200. When darkness fell over the grounds, a special flaming burnout was performed by Nut. If you missed out, mark your calendars for next year, information will be out by the end of the year for next years bash. The Dragon Slayers want to thank all who came out to support our new venture, also a special thanks to the vendors and A-nnette’s Fresh Katch for providing excellent fish plates during the day and breakfast Saturday and Sunday. All of you are invited to return next year.
FAAFF is headed up by Andy Woodall who has worked tirelessly making the right contacts for the camp to become a reality. This camp will be unique and the only one of its kind in North Carolina. A similar camp exists in South Carolina but is larger. This camp will serve soldiers and their families from Fort Bragg, and area VA hospitals. You still can help by donating to FFAAFF, send to FFAAFF PO Box 19062 Raleigh NC 27619, just write on the check for Weekend Camp. All the young men and women in the military deserve a tremendous thank you, and if they come home injured we owe them so much this is only a small way the Dragon Slayers can say thank you. Whenever you meet a vet, please say thank you. You will be hearing more about this camp in the future.

What a ride! They should have called this “The Invasion”
because thousands of motorcycles, invaded Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas during the 2013 Cruisin’ the Coast! At Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson there were numerous vendors set up including Lanier Law Group, Christian Motorcycle Association, Rolling Thunder and dozens of others. One of those was the NASCAR similator. Everyone there had an opportunity to try it out and see what it is like to be a NASCAR driver! As you can see below, there was a pirate and his companion. The weather was almost perfect while we were there. The rain held off until the last day of the rally when most folks were leaving on Sunday. For more photos and info, please go to: www.myrtlebeachharley.com You can also see more Cruisin’ The Coast photos at the Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine Facebook page.

My husband and I took a pleasure ride one Sunday in March of this year with some family members and friends to the Corner Grill in Conway, N.C. They have excellent food and service and the have a nice patio for outdoor dining. While we were there relaxing, a young lady gets out of a vehicle that had pulled up and asked, “Who owns that ‘white bike’ parked over by the fence?” ...my husband and I both answered in unison, “We do!” The young lady wanted to talk to one of us, so my husband went over and had a brief conversation with her. Then he came back with a piece of paper with her name and phone number on it. I asked what she wanted and he said she wanted to know if there was a possibility that we would come and pick her up and take her and her date to their Senior Prom on the motorcycle. I kinda chuckled and thought to myself that would be the end of that subject, that we would never hear from her
Sent in by: Dwight & Jeannette Wrenn - Emporia, VA. again concerning the matter. But several weeks later she called us and wanted to know if we were still willing to come to Conway and escort them to the prom...we did just that on April 27, 2013! I told her when we got to the school and they got off the trike that this would be a memory for both of them and definitely a memory for us. Thanks, Dana Vann, for spotting our trike and asking us to escort you and your date to your Senior Prom. It was nice meeting you and your date and your parents.I hope you keep this cherished memory as long as we do.

Cole Harley-Davidson celebrated their 15th year of serving Harley enthusiasts, throughout southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia, on Saturday June 8th. The day was full of fun, excitement, and motorcycles! People came from all over the area near and far to help Cole H-D celebrate this milestone year. The day began with the Harley-Davidson Demo Truck providing FREE test rides on many of the newest model motorcycles Harley has to offer; over 50 test rides took place throughout the day! Rush Racing Exhaust was on location demoing their latest products that add that additional rumble to the Harley engine. Chad Tate, owner of Extreme Kustoms, was on site providing live air brushing and demoing his pin stripping capabilities. Bad Azz Apparel, MOD Jewelry, WileyX sunglasses, and Bulva watches were all there as well showing off their latest gear and apparel for motorcycle enthusiasts. After people enjoyed test riding the new Harleys and shopping around with all of the vendors they were able to grab some of the area’s best BBQ and Brisket from Dickey’s BBQ out of Beckley, WV. They also enjoyed some great live music performed by the one and only Benny Wilson Band! Towards the end of the day Cole H-D hosted a couple of Burnout contests that really excited the crowd. Not only was the crowd thrilled about the contests but they were also smoked out from all of the rubber that was screaming and burning. The event concluded with the announcement of winners of the Burnout contests, all winning gift cards and tickets to see Justin Moore in concert, and The Benny Wilson Band jamming out a few more songs.

There could not have been a better way to celebrate 15 years of service to the community and Cole H-D was very pleased and honored to have all of their loyal & new customers help celebrate this milestone year.

Fuzzy and Gail Melton invited us to an event to support a Wounded Warrior: Cpl JB Kerns (USMC) of Ararat, VA. JB was on his third tour as a combat engineer when his vehicle was destroyed by an IED on April 7, 2011. JB lost both of his legs and an arm. Last year, there was a benefit concert starring Gary Sinise and the Lt Dan Band. (Gary Sinise played the character “Lieutenant Dan” in the movie Forrest Gump). This year, there was a fellowship of people gathering to continue the efforts of raising funds to build JB a smart home under the “Building for America’s Bravest” program. The ride, sponsored by Marine Corps League Detachment 908 with support from Rolling Thunder’s chapter from Johnson City, TN, began at the National Guard Armory in Martinsville, VA and ended at Dan River Park in Ararat, VA. I had the honor of sniffing one of the National Vice Presidents of Rolling Thunder, who rode hundreds of miles to attend this event!
Meeting new friends in Martinsville. The weather forecast was for rain. Before leaving our house, I put my paws together and prayed with my driver for the rain to hold until after the event. We rode with Thomas “G.E.” Sanders, Jim and Christina Kazakavage, and Rudy Hendrix from Sanford, NC to Martinsville. God gave us beautiful weather, but I reckon we should have prayed for good weather until we returned home because we rode through heavy rain in Winston-Salem. (I still didn’t see “Raining Cats and Dogs.”) Fuzzy led the group and Law Enforcement Officers ensured our safety from Martinsville to Ararat. The motorcycles were split into two groups with cages led by JB between the groups. The route was scenic with sweeps and curves. Local businesses provided door prizes. There were soooo many door prizes that every participant received one! I won six Slim Jims – the perfect door prize for a furry little guy like me. The businesses were very considerate in providing thoughtful door prizes that could be carried home by a biker.

We are on our third transmission and it took a few weeks for the re-engineered transmission to arrive, but once it arrived at RPHD, they had her ready for the road quickly. Ray’s crew has always taken care of us! Have you ever been on your bike and was tailgated by a cage? I took my driver on a short ride and a person in a white Honda car stayed about 3 feet (or less) from our rear at 45 mph on a 4-lane road. My driver used hand gestures to try to signal the driver to back off. We changed lanes twice and the car stayed on us. I stood up and leaned forward. That signaled to my driver that something was wrong. He looked in the rear view and watched me vomit into the air. My barf spread out and landed across the car’s windshield. Bulls-eye!! The cager turned on his windshield wipers and my yellow, slimy puke was smearing over his windshield before the water starting flowing. Do you think he backed off? Ya betcha he did! My driver gave me paws up for days! My driver and I weren’t able to go to Rolling Thunder this year. On Memorial Day, we rode with Jim & Christi, G.E., Jonathan and Sarah Tart, and Mike “Krzywuf” Wilson to Wayne Community College near Goldsboro. Christi and Jim are the Gold Star Parents of Adam K. Ginett, TSgt, USAF EOD, KIA 19 Jan 2010, Afghanistan.
Sarah is Adam’s Gold Star Sibling. I had the honor of sniffing and being petted by Colonel Jeannie Leavitt, the keynote speaker. Col Leavitt is the Air Force’s first female combat pilot, and she is the first woman to command a Fighter Wing. At the event, we spent time with Will Jewell, the Gold Star Child of Steven R. Jewell, SPC, US Army, KIA 14 Aug 2007, Iraq. We first met Will at a Flags for Fallen Military event in 2012 honoring his father. Will is a barkuva young man, and my driver and I are honored to know him! My driver and I are shocked by the number of people who do not understand the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day to honor, respect and remember those who died for our country. “Happy Memorial Day” is not an appropriate thing to say to a family who lost a loved one. Yes, we should always thank those serving now and those who served, but we should always remember those who gave their lives for our country.

Been There, Sniffed That My driver and I will sometimes ride just to clear our heads, talk with God, pray for the souls of our Fallen Heroes, pray for the safe return of Bowe Bergdahl (held captive by the Taliban since June 2009), pray for those serving now, and, above all, pray for our nation. Since we didn’t ride across the USA this year, we decided to plan a long day trip and open it to anyone, whether on a bike or in a car. We called it a Remembrance Ride and we rode on June 1. There was no need to RSVP, no fees, no registration. If people wanted to ride with us, they only had to be at one of our pre-planned stops, which we provided in an estimated time table we posted on my Facebook page. We had six bikes and one cage leave Sanford, and Richard Chowning from Charlotte linked up with Remembrance us in Marion, NC. Gold Star parents Jim & Christina Ride I in Little rode with us. Snoopy the Biker Dog brought his driver, Switzerland. Tim Wall. Brit, a retired Military Working Dog, brought Photo by: his driver and co-driver (Mark & Jasmine Russell) in Mark Russell. a cage. The group was completed be Tod & Kendra Hartwick, Darryn Mewhorter, “G.E.”, and my driver and me. We left Sanford at 8am to ride Devil’s Whip (NC-80, which once was known as Devil’s Stair Case), Diamondback, and the Blue Ridge Parkway to Blowing Rock before returning to Sanford at about 9:30pm. While on Devil’s Whip and Diamondback, I had the Chewy Cam going (my helmet camera) so my friends can see the ride from my perspective. I found the only fire hydrant on the loop and you can see in the video that I’m tracking the fire hydrant! We dogs know the drop points for pee-mail! Everyone rode over 500 miles that day, with some riding closer to 600 miles based on where they live. I think everyone enjoyed the ride, the route, and the pre-planned stops. Will there be a Remembrance Ride II? We’re thinking about it and it might be The Snake (US-421 in Tennessee), Back of the Dragon (VA-16 in Virginia), or maybe Copperhead loop (north of Brevard, NC). We thought about Tail of the Dragon, but that may be just a bit too far for a day trip. With temperatures and humidity rising, we Meeting Brit, a retired might wait until September or early October. Military Working Dog. If you’re interested in our next ride, keep watching for posts on my Facebook page.

Jackyl @ the house of blues It was a sell out show for Jackyl at The House of Blues MB as Bike Week Myrtle Beach 2013 came to a close on Saturday night. 2013 brought twice as large a crowd as the year before, and next year the turnout is expected to be even larger! So, anyone wanting to see the concert (Jackyl) better buy tix early. Amanda and I had a great time and hung out on the Upper Deck of the House Of Blues after the concert to get autographs and to speak with the Full Throttle Saloon Staff. They were down to earth and I enjoyed speaking with all of them, especially "Goat!" Michael Ballard told me that after the MB Rally they will have a two week break at their home in Tn., before hitting the road again for more events. I had to ask him if he Rides, and quickly he responded with "yeah, It's out back!" Angie and Michael said they enjoyed MB 2013 and look forward to seeing everyone back safe again next year at Throttlefest 2014! story & photos: Bald Eagle

The Legal Side of Motorcycle Wrecks By David Henson, J.D.
If you ride a motorcycle, you know the joy of the open road. Cars can feel stifling, like metal cages on wheels. There’s nothing like that sense of freedom when it’s just blue sky, your bike, the highway, and you. But whether you’re on a Harley or in a Chevy, accidents happen. Unfortunately, the issues surrounding a motorcycle wreck are far different from those in a typical automobile collision case. All of these factors play a part when it comes to fighting for your legal rights after an accident. So…what are the differences? 1. Level of Injury.
The very thing that makes motorcycles so much fun—the connection of human, machine, and road—also make them dangerous. If something goes wrong and you get in a wreck, you’re going to miss having a car’s 2000 pounds of protection. With just a helmet and maybe some leather between you and a collision, injuries from a crash are much more likely to be catastrophic. If you pursue legal action, your lawyer needs to know how to handle serious— catastrophic—injury cases. This means that the lawyer should be able to assess the full medical consequences of a serious wreck—not just current medical needs, but future medical and financial needs, as well. It is a lawyer’s job to try to get you enough compensation for your injuries so that you and your family can get the care you need, for as long as you need it.
2. Physics.
The dynamics of a motorcycle collision involve numerous complex factors such as acceleration, deceleration, stopping distance, skidding distance, if the bike gets laid down or slides across the pavement, and other qualities unique to motorcycles. It all gets very complicated very quickly. What’s worse is that all those things will affect how insurance companies and juries respond to your case. In a lawsuit, a lawyer who has handled dozens or even hundreds of motorcycle wreck cases is more likely to know what evidence to preserve and what questions to ask than a lawyer who is less experienced.
3. Perception.
There’s a reason why motorcyclists form such strong bonds: They understand each other. You know what I’m talking about— mention that you ride motorcycles, and the person you’re talking to is likely to either light up with mutual excitement… or shut you down. The same is true of jurors in a trial. Some percentage will likely feel that motorcycles are “bad” or naturally dangerous, and that a wreck had to be your fault. They don’t yet know that most serious motorcycle accidents are caused when a car hits the bike…but they will when I finish talking with them. Part of my job is to educate jurors about the real cause of the crash, and to let them see the rider as victim, not demon.
4. Insurance offers.
Actually, this is a pretty common problem for both motorcycle and car accident victims. Insurance companies do NOT have your best interests at heart. They will do everything they can to try to trick you into making statements that can be used against you, with the ultimate goal of paying out as little as possible. What’s different is that insurers often try to make the motorcyclists feel guilty, even if the accident wasn’t their fault! Plus, many minor car accidents can be settled without an attorney—if there is no personal injury or major car damage, then the driver can do just as well on his or her own. But there is no such thing as a “minor” motorcycle wreck. Don’t let an insurance adjustor talk you into settling before talking with a lawyer.
Motorcycles are not just cars on two wheels, and motorcycle accident cases have to be handled differently from car wreck cases. If you find yourself in this position—and I hope you never do— do yourself a favor and look for an attorney you can trust to have your back, someone on your side who can help build your unique case in a way that gives you the best chance of winning. Ride Safe!

muddy water riding club 4th Annual Poker Run For Charities On May 11th, 2013 the Muddy Water Riding Club of Emporia, Va. presented it’s Fourth Annual Poker Run for Charities. We were very pleased to have two great supporting sponsors for this year’s event. They are, Mark Schnur, owner of Amark Auctions of Courtland, VA. and Carolina BBQ and Chicken, Inc. of Emporia, Va. They both showed fantastic support and bent over backwards for anything we needed to help make it another success. Their support is greatly appreciated by the membership, the riders and the charities receiving monies from this year’s event. We put on one of the “Best Events” we have ever done this year and for the ones that missed it, there is always next year. The event gets bigger and better and we are already making plans for next year. The weather had forecasted 70 percent rains, but it did not hold back the 89 Motorcycle Riders and 36 Passengers from showing up and supporting. (By the way, not a drop of rain fell all day.) The riders and passengers enjoyed a nice ride through the countryside of Va. and parts of N.C., including Lake Gaston. After the ride, we had a great meal of BBQ Chicken, Pork BBQ, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Rolls and delicious desserts prepared by Vickie. There were many door prizes, 50/50 Raffle, cornhole and music was by DJ and supporter Steve Reeves. It has been very nice to receive the many compliments regarding the route laid out and we plan to make it even better in the future. The Muddy Water R/C is blessed to have the support from many individuals and other clubs. It is because we make it a point to bond with many others and support their rides as well. The Muddy Water R/C has endured a huge increase in membership in the last very few years. Muddy Water R/C started with nine members and has grown to the present 39 members. Those members are: Steve Williams (President), Tony Moore (Vice President), Chris Jarratt (Secretary), Lee Seymour (Treasurer), Jerry Hubbard (Sgt. at Arms), Adam Brewer, Adam Williams, Blake Barnes, Bubba Gay, Chris Jarratt, Clayton Justice, Dinky Grizzard. Donnie Taylor, Doug Ramsay, Dwight Wrenn, Gary Rae, Heavy Seward, J.T. Turner, Jade Daniels, Jesse Harrell, John Halfhill, Kenneth Mitchell, Lance Williams, Larry Lasher, Larry Ramsey, Mike Moran, Moose House, Owen Kitchen, Randy Stainback, Richard Whitby, Robert Everidge, Roger Gibson, Scott Harrell, Scott Lifsey, Tim Vincent, Tracy Dietrich, Wiley Poarch, William King and Willie Bates. One reason for the increase in membership is because of the many that ride with us. They get to see the excitement that we enjoy from giving to those that are less fortunate than many of us. By seeing this, they want to be a part of it and feel the excitement as well. The Muddy Water R/C members strongly believe in “Paying it Forward!” However, we reserve the right to be picky with our members. You have to want to be a part of a group that works diligently to help our fellow man, woman and child that are in need. By that being said, charities chosen for this year’s event are Hospice of Emporia, Family Violence/ Sexual Assault Unit of Emporia, Rev. Vincent Lowery’s Annual Programs, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Charlie M. Pearce Scholarship Fund and Jackson Feilds Home for Girls. Muddy Water R/C would like to thank all our supporters, riders, passengers and the many individuals that give of their time to help make our events a success. Mark your calendar for next years “Muddy Water R/C Poker Run for Charities on May 10, 2014. Until then, ride safe, good health and stay in touch. (For those wanting to be added to our email list for notification of our rides send email with subject line “Notify of Events” to muddywaterrc@hotmail.com) and if on Facebook like our page Muddy Water Riding Club – Emporia, Va.)

Love For Leta
story: Lady D photos: Vinney
Leta Coffee Bateman, 42 years young, mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, went to the doctor as she felt she was having acid reflux. The doctors were great, did a very thorough exam and found out….it was not reflux but cancer; colon cancer. In very little time she was in the operating room. It turned out she had Stage IV colon cancer and they had to take out one ovary, her fallopian tube, appendix, some colon and 22 lymph nodes. When you meet her, you see a wonderful smiling lady. She is a hero and a grand example of a sister cancer survivor. Ms. Leta is currently undergoing continued cancer treatment. She is not a Tarboro, North Carolina native but the town of Tarboro and local bikers have adopted her as one of their own. On June 8, 2013 a ride was held to raise money to help with her medical expenses. Tears flowed down her cheeks when the Bikers came forth to show love, help, and assistance. Leta said, “Good friends, good family, faith and the Good Lord above really blessed me.” Ms. Leta shares her concern and asks that people have their colonoscopy done when requested by your doctor. She emphasizes for a person to listen to their body and go for help when there are signs of something not going right. Do not let fear hold you back. You never know what may happen and it is better to catch things early rather than late. Please take care of yourself, so you can take care of others. The ride was hosted and began at George’s Club of Tarboro, then went to Dinky’s Dungeon, George’s Lounge, Melanie’s Place and then back to George’s Club. At George’s Club of Tarboro they had wonderful plates filled with food for sale, raffle tickets, door prizes and a number of wonderful items went up for auction. Many people showed up to love her and participate in the ride and all the proceeds went to Ms. Leta to help her maintain her home and help pay the medical bills which are ongoing.
Melanie Johnson, left, pictured here with Leta Bateman, planned the Love For Leta Run and hosted the event at George’s Club of Tarboro, N.C.
They say friends don’t let friends fight cancer alone, here in Tarboro, North Carolina, Bikers and friends stand by Ms. Leta in love. Be Blessed Ms. Leta and continue in remaining Cancer free!!

FDNY Southern rumble
story & photos: Anne Barnwell Hope For The Warriors® Public Relations Director
4 motorcycles, 5,000+ miles, 15 cities, 2 weeks, $20,000. All for one cause. On August 9, four members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) will kick off a 2-week, 15-city, motorcycle ride in their effort to raise funds and awareness for Hope For The Warriors®. The group has set a goal to raise $20,000 through fundraising events throughout the summer. The driving force behind the ride is Chris Walsh, a member of the FDNY, a registered nurse in an emergency room, Iraq War veteran, husband, and father of four children. Clearly this is a man with a great deal on his plate and yet, focusing on our nation’s veterans and military families is very important to him. Chris was an officer in the Marine Corps from 1991 – 1995. On 9/11, he had been working as a fire fighter for nine months. In 2002, he received an offer to reactivate as a Marine. With the memory of 9/11 forever fresh in his mind, he returned to the Marine Corps and soon after deployed to Iraq. After he returned and was discharged, he and fellow fire fighters traveled to Washington, D.C. to visit wounded service members in the medical centers. As he spoke with them, he listened to their stories, and learned what had happened to each of them. He was speaking with a young Marine who had lost one of his legs in Iraq. As this man shared the story of how he was injured, Chris realized that he knew exactly where this man had been hurt. “The streets that I had been driving down (while in Iraq) were the same streets these guys were getting getting hit by IEDs. I was just lucky.” That discovery gave Chris another reason to focus on helping these wounded service members. In spite of his busy schedule, he knows that it could have been him wounded and in rehabilitation at the hospital. The Crew Chris is joined by a crew with a years of service: Jay, John and Kevin have all worked as fire fighters. Out of the four, three are still active in the FDNY. All are dedicated to supporting wounded service members and military families. The Bikes All four will hit the road on their black HarleyDavidson motorcycles. Jay: 2007 Road King Kevin: 2011 Road Glide John: 2012 Fat Boy Chris: 2010 Street Glide Travel Support The group seeks donations and support along the way for the trip. The more donations they receive in hotel rooms, lodging, meals and gas cards, the more that goes directly to Hope For The Warriors®. Their goal is for all of the funds to be donated directly to Hope For The Warriors®. The full route can be seen at www.hopeforthewarriors.org/fdnyrumblers. Stops include: Ashville, NC; Nashville, TN; Memphis, TN; Dallas, TX; Austin, TX; (Day trip to San Antonio, TX); New Orleans, LA; Montgomery, AL; Gainesville, FL; Sarasota, FL; Key West, FL; Daytona, FL; Fayetteville, NC; and Bethesda, MD. Walter Reed Family BBQ The last stop before they return to New York City will be in Washington, D.C. The group is joining Hope For The Warriors® for a BBQ at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. The BBQ will be open to service members and their families undergoing rehabilitation at the medical facility. In this regard, Chris has gone full circle, returning to the very place where his interact ion with wounded began.

All of the guys are excited and grateful for the opportunity to visit with these American heroes. They are also thankful for the opportunity to tour the country, highlighting the important work that has been done by Hope For The Warriors® and the work that still needs to be done to restore self, family and hope for wounded service members and military families. Second Year This is the second year of the rumble. Last year’s was called “Rumble to the Rockies” and five men rode west into the Rocky Mountains. The group raised more than $18,000 and like this year, ended the two week road trip with a BBQ at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. This year the men are excited to travel a new route with new people to listen to their message. To learn more or donate, visit: www.hopeforthewarriors.org/fdnyrumblers
gary crumpler we remember gary “crump” crumpler
story & photos: Johnny King How do you mend a broken heart? How do you remember someone who is taken away way too soon? How? On March 30th, over 40 people mounted their steeds and headed to the finally resting place of Gary ‘Crump’ Crumpler. Crump was taken away from us 3 years ago on his way home on a cold night. He had left Snow Hill with 3 friends, one breaking off fairly early on the ride home, while the other two continued on together. Crump and his riding brother (Chris Gates) stopped in Fremont to warm up on this cold night. Having a drink and warming up they talked about the evening activities and what they would do the next day after they got up. After warming up they headed back out on their bikes heading towards home. Crump braking off from Chris down the road, Chris blowing the horn on his iron steed and throwing up his hand, as to say, till tomorrow. Only to get a phone call in a few hours letting him know that his friend and riding brother wouldn’t make it. Crump, turns onto the road where his family lived, only to be so close not to make it the rest of distance it was going to take to walk into his front door. A van swerves into his path and in a split second our friend and brother was gone from us. Crump a man, of very few words, jokes, and a smile that
would light up a room had gone home, but not an earthly home. He rides on the streets of gold in heaven and looks out for the rest of us as we head out for our rides. On this particular day we were lead by Dixie Steel out of the parking lot of Carolina Billiards for the ride to Kenly and the cemetery where Crump was laid to rest and to meet up with others, as well as, his parents that were there waiting for us. Words of times gone by were exchanged by those that knew him, rode with him, and spent the last hours of that night with the others in attendance. After, a few words and a prayer, we headed back to Wilson and our starting point for a barbeque dinner in Crumps memory. Gary ‘Crump’ Crumpler, was a son, a brother, and a friend to many people and those of us that knew him in life remember him yearly by a ride to his final resting place. How do you mend a broken heart? How do you remember someone who is taken away way too soon? You ride, exactly what he would want you to do and you remember him once a year with those that were close to him so that his memory never dies. Rest in Peace my friend…

Cruisin 6For A Cure th Annual
story: Sherrie Gupton
photos: Doobie
Our family became involved with the first Halifax Co. Relay for Life in 1997 and we have been helping every since. We have had several family members that have battled cancer and see the Relay and Cruisin For A Cure as such a worthy cause. My husband, Ricky Gupton’s first car show was held because a friend’s young daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia. That first year the money raised was split between her and the Relay for Life. Since then, she has become the Honorary Team Captain for our Relay Team. She is now cancer free and she and her family come join us at each Car Show. This year was our 6th Car Show and even though it is alot of hard work, it is also more rewarding with each passing year. Every dollar we raise brings us closer to finding a cure for this awful disease.

Touring the Virginia Byways with
the Motor Maids
The tour will take you from the sea to the mountains, to include the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Virginia Motor Maids will find themselves riding to Virginia Beach, Luray, Floyd, Newport News, Gloucester, Wytheville, and Roanoke to name just a few cities. If you find yourself in Virginia this summer, and see some women riders, ask them if they are Motor Maids, you will experience a treat! Come and see why,
The Motor Maids is a women’s motorcycle riding organization. Our history is very rich and it stems back to the 1940s. If you find yourself saying WOW, your math is right. We have been going strong for over 72 years! We have members across North America and Canada. One of the many Motor Maids Districts is the Virginia/DC district, which I belong to. The Virginia Motor Maids are full of women that have a passion for motorcycles, riding, and the camaraderie that is associated with women riders everywhere. We as a district are always looking for new and exciting journeys for each riding season. The year was 2011, me and my fellow Motor Maid riding buddy, was out riding through the mountains of Virginia. We started a brain storming session, on what we as a district can do for next year’s riding season.
Voilà “The Virginia Motor Maids Tour” was born. We wanted to make this tour easy, fun, and exciting. We came up with places of interest across the whole state. You ride to the designated places outlined in the booklet and take a picture of yourself at a designated landmark or a sign of the location, as proof of the stop. At the end of the Tour, I will tally up the points and the two highest points wins the prizes. It was a success last year and even a bigger one this year.

It works like this, the tour runs from 6 April to 4 November, you earn points at each place you stop at, and if you submit a News Letter article you earn extra points. We also have a history question on some of the stops, you have the right answer you earn the points. For example, the picture below of the Black Iron Dog has history behind it; The story goes that in the 19th century Black Iron Dog (Newfoundland) stood in front of a store on Broad Street (Richmond, VA.). Every day a little girl (Bernadine Rees) would come by the store and pet the dog and talk to it soothingly. She loved it as if it was real. Then one day the little girl didn’t come by anymore. She died in an epidemic of Scarlett fever in 1862. They buried her at Hollywood Cemetery, and because she had such affection for the cast iron dog, it was placed at her grave site. There, some will tell you, it stands over her to this day, its iron jaws set to chase away any intruders who might bring harm to its little friend.
