Thanks, also, to all of our readers for keeping the suggestions coming in, as well as, the stories, photos, poems, etc. Of course, none of this would be possible without our advertisers. nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes Our mission is dependent on both items for packages and financial support for postage. We invite and welcome your support. Our troops are still deploying, still serving and still sacrificing for our country. We honor that service and sacrifice. Will you join our team to make sure we can continue our mission of support to show our deployed troops that Americans still appreciates their service and sacrifice? Please don’t ever think that you can’t make a donation because your effort is too small. We appreciate every single dollar. Troop Signup for Care Packages We appreciate the service of the members of our country’s military as they deploy to serve missions in difficult and dangerous environments. Our care packages show the care and support of a grateful nation. They contain snacks, toiletries, and recreation items. Troops are welcome to ask for specific items that they may be missing or needing. Special requests often are items like coffee, certain snacks, socks, favorite magazines and books. We send packages that are large enough for several members of a troop to share. Chaplains are a good point of contact for our organization so they can distribute items in chapel, recreation items, or along their visits to outlying areas. Troops who wish to receive packages are asked to email us at ncp4p@yahoo.com or private message us on the facebook page.
We enjoyed having WNCT Ken Watling visit our center and work with our volunteers in supporting our troops!
We always appreciate troops who volunteer with us!
Its SUMMERTIME! Which means....bored children and teens! Get those kiddos busy making cards and writing letters for our care packages going our troops. Find some Christmas ornament crafts that they can start making. We need Christmas ornaments starting in September! Think of some creative things they can work on. Here are some ideas: Download a playlist of Christmas music, burn some CDs, and have the kiddos create a label with artwork and the playlist. Make some beaded candy canes and wreaths. Make some origami ornaments. Make a Christmas book with inspirational sayings, jokes, comics. How about all those great knock knock jokes- they make great cards! While on your family vacation, pick up some postcards and write messages on those. Paint some rocks. Paint some seashells. Immediate and urgent needs: Our troops who are deploying need solar showers, sunscreen ( lotions and sticks- no sprays), and insect repellent ( pump sprays or wipes, high strength DEET). Solar showers can be purchased at Walmart, and any camping supply company for about $9-15. Here is another idea... We welcome day camps, Bible Schools, Day care centers, biker groups, families to make “Bags of Sunshine” for our troops. It’s easy- collect items with yellow colors in the wrapping: powdered lemon flavored drink mixes, small boxes of lemonhead candies, lemon flavored airheads, lemon and banana NowandLater, WetWipes in the yellow wrapper, small bottles of hand sanitizer, lip balm, sunscreen sticks or small tubes, Lemon flavored Neco crackers, Juicy Fruit gum. Color the coloring sheet, put several items in sandwich bags ( take drink mixes and wipes out of box) along with the coloring sheet. Deliver bags to us to send to troops. https://www.triedandtrueblog.com/you-are-my-sunshine-free-coloring-prints/ ~ Barbara
Huge thank you to Mt Olive pickles for these packs for our care packages!

What’s a uvula? Everyone has one, male or female. A uvula is the fleshy mass of tissue that dangles from the posterior of the soft palate. When you look in the mirror and open your mouth, it is the “u” shaped piece of flesh hanging down at the back of your throat.
It is believed that irregular airflow due to an elongated uvula could cause the tissues in the throat to vibrate, which in turn may give rise to loud snoring or heavy breathing during sleep. Who knew such a little piece of flesh makes a difference when we swallow, speak, sing and even sleep.

Some singers claim the uvula helps them produce vibrato, which is the pulsating effect in singing that is produced by making variations in the pitch. The uvula also helps make sounds in our speech, especially the guttural sounds.

The uvula has many roles. For instance, when we swallow solid food or fluids, the uvula and the soft palate move upward to close off the nasopharynx, thereby preventing food from entering the nasal cavity. The uvula also plays a vital role in the articulation of speech and deglutition, which refers to the process of swallowing. It secretes large amounts of thin saliva that contain serous and mucous components, thereby lubricating the back of the throat.

Turning The Page This was sent to us by, Junior. Thanks for your service to our country and we hope to see you on the road in our neck of the woods, soon!!!! I have spent almost 4 years in the frozen Hell of North Dakota! 40 below and 3 feet of snow just sucks! No two ways about it. But I couldn’t wait each month to get my new issue of Behind Barz to make me feel closer to my brothers in Goldsboro. Now father time has caught up with me, as he does all of us. After 22 years in the Air Force it is now time to retire, come home, and put down some roots. I just renewed my subscription and updated my address to where the road will finally end and I’ll call home in South Carolina. Can’t wait to open the pages and be able to be a part of what’s going on in the bike world again. Thanks for the part your magazine played in making these past few years a little more bearable! Maybe you will see my guys and me in some of the upcoming issues. Thanks again, Bobby “Junior” Ryan

BARZ
Taking the Water Street exit a fter going across Mobile Bay and then going under the river on westbound I-10, my first thought was, I’ve entered a scene like in one of my books. With a dozen or more Police cars — blue lights flashing — parked in the median separating the Renaissance Hotel and the Mobile Convention center, I noted dozens of uniformed officers directing traffic, obviously being diligent in their job of protecting and serving the flood of people exiting the convention center. Many were headed to the parking garage under my home for the next three days. Putting on my blinker, I was directed to make a U-turn and park in special event parking on the lowest level of the hotel next to it. Turning in I saw a hundred or more bikes parked in neat lines behind the bars of the parking area with dozens of patched bikers unloading their bikes and watching the scene outside.
2018 NCOM
Convention Mobile, Alabama
The Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel was the site of the 2018 National Coalition of Motorcyclists ( NCOM ), a coalition of motorcycle groups, clubs, and organizations brought together for a mutual exchange of information, legislative strategy, and the combined strength to fight issues that limit the freedom of the road for those of us that ride on two or three wheels. Delegates from all across the U.S. were there including ABATE groups, Coalition of Clubs, CMAs, and independents. NCOM is heavily supported by A.I.M. (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists), both founded by Richard M. Lester with the intent to protect motorcyclists both legally and with injury support for FREE. Earlier that day, I had arrived, unloaded, and then spent the afternoon talking with old friends, meeting new ones, attending meetings and seminars, and signing some copies of my newest novel. ‘Flames’, is a motorcycle thriller written not only to entertain the reader, but to help bikers stay a bit safer with imbedded defensive riding tips, a map of the settings, and a story that would give insight to non-riders of what bikers experience on the road, including a glossary of biker terms. Safety is a
18
big priority of mine…too many have lost their lives needlessly, while others have had their lives turned upside down by the uninformed public with the backing of the legislature, enforced by the police.
The convention was a real eyeopener for me. Living and writing about motorcycling in the southeast, I soon realized how laws, policies, enforce ment procedures, and public perception varies drastically across our nation. Living in Georgia, forced by law to wear a helmet, I live between Florida and South Carolina, both with laws giving freedom of choice to wear helmets if 21 or older. I get it; the public and their legislative representatives believe they must protect bikers from themselves. And after seeing movies like Easy Rider, Wild Hogs, and shows like Sons of Anarchy, they may stereotype bikers that wear leather, or patches/colors, or with long hair and cut-off sleeves as dope-smoking, heavy drinking, violent thugs that are not to be trusted. The police, protecting and serving the public, must do what they can to thwart the perceived threat. The media, typically getting better ratings when bringing news of tragedy and violence, often foster that public feeling of mistrust. Imagine this scenario; Mary Jo lives down the street from a woman with a biker boyfriend. Concerned for her safety, she calls her uncle the sheriff to tell him about it. He sends a deputy to ride by and run the biker’s plates and then advises his department that members of a CMA gang are in the county. Wanting to please their boss and the citizens, the deputies begin to look for any reason to stop patched bikers, or maybe anyone riding a bike. Remember that ‘protect and serve’ pertains to the community, both its politicians and voters. Stereotyping begins at home with the public… moms, dads, grands, and peers. “You know what I saw this biker do on the road today…?”

What do we do? It bothers me to see a mother grab her kids’ hands and lock the doors to her minivan when I am nearby. Getting followed by a cop for miles while they run my plates and look for a reason to pull me over is a hassle, not to mention the reinforcement of the public’s opinion of me as they ride by if I am pulled over. ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ does not pertain to public opinion or the news media. Perception is reality to the non-biking public, after all, aren’t we dressed just like those guys on SOA? Will anti-profiling laws change that? I don’t think so. In states where profiling happens frequently, 47% of those stopped were independents, that is, they were not wearing colors. What will change that? More media coverage and air-time of the good things we do. At Christmas time it’s easy to get coverage for our toy runs. Other times we need coverage for our charity and benefit rides, visits to hospitals and orphanages, honoring our veterans, and standing up for what is right. Maybe a movie or two where the bikers are the good guys that come to the aid of the public and police to prevent terrorism or organized criminal activity. We need to get the local media on our side by getting them involved ahead of time when we have charity events and fund raisers. Asked to be a keynote speaker at the event, I felt moved to talk about public perception and what we could do about it. Years ago I felt the same way after being told by my boss how being perceived as a biker might impact our customers. I set out to change that with my first book. However, movies and the news media always trump a book. And during the presidential election we all learned how much social media influences public opinion. Will positive media coverage help? I know it will. As a group we have the power to change public opinion of our character, and as a result we will find it easier to get the support of the public when we need legislative help for change. As individuals, we can change opinion by helping others, holding doors open, and saying hello to people we encounter daily. Wave at police as you ride by. Consider that little old lady that got your help talking about you later at church. Imagine the power of one multiplied by millions of other bikers doing good deeds. Maybe even drivers will think about us as people with families as they rush to work, home, or other places.
change the public’s opinion with good judgement, a bit of patience, and the media. Imagine the public seeing you, a biker as one of the ‘good guys’, trustworthy and helpful. There were other issues discussed at the convention, not just profiling. Automated vehicles, penalties for distracted driving, non-responsive sensors at traffic lights, E-85 gas, lane-splitting, and RICO laws were just a few. Legal tactics and expectations pertaining to being stopped by the police were covered in detail. Back to that first night in Mobile. After spending the day at the convention, I was ready to ride before it got dark…so much to see in that area, but so little time. We found out on the eleven o’clock news that the University of South Alabama (USA) was having their graduation at the convention center and their keynote speaker was Jill Biden, the Vice President’s wife. That explains the heavy police presence, directing traffic and making the attendees feel protected from the bikers across the street. It may also account for a few seemingly out-ofplace people sporting wind jackets and earpieces near the side entrance and the bridge to the convention center from the hotel. I wonder if…surely not. Anyway, it would certainly make a great premise for a few chapters in my next book with a little bit of ‘what if…’. Gotta go, I’ve got some writing to do. Do we stereotype? Of course…we all do. We look at the way people drive, what kind of car they’re in, if they are holding a smart phone, how they’re dressed, and their facial expressions when we encounter them—and we react accordingly. Most people form an opinion of you within the first three seconds. We have the power to

Thunder on Tobacco Road Seven April 19th - 22nd, 2018 Seven Springs, NC photos by Billy Laray Ayers The good times started on Thursday night in Lenoir County, NC at the Mason Dixon Park at Thunder on Tobacco Road 2018 Spring Motorcycle Rally and Party. Everybody was ready to party after the long winter that we had! It was great seeing everyone again! Friday evening was a fun time with people games. The South Creek Band rocked it out on stage! If you missed it you really need to come out next time. Saturday afternoon the bike rodeo took place with fearce competition in all categories! This is probably one of the most competitive bike rodeos in the Central Carolina Region...maybe even in the South Eastern part of the country! Saturday evening was a killer ride in Bike Show competition! ...and the night ended with one of North Carolina’s favorite bands, Steel Standin’! We hope you were able to attend this fun packed event! It is one of the few remaining adult parties around eastern NC. This Rally is steeped in tradition plus, you will not have to break your piggy bank to attend. Vendors were on hand, as they always are every year. One of the great things about this event was that golf carts and 4 wheelers were allowed to get around on in the park. Camping was also, free! There were bon fires and it was a BYOB event! There were so many activities, people games, and bike games this year and add to that the killer bands, they made this event a must do this year! Hope you made it out to the best party in the Carolina’s...if not mark it on your calendar for next year! You will be glad you did! RUSSIAN HACKERS INVADE North carolina
story & photos courtesy Rick Guptill
Over 80 owners, family and friends of Ural and Dnepr Russian Sidecar motorcycles attended the Annual Carolina Rally And Potluck (CRAP) at the Deep River Campground May 4 through 6. This year marked the 12th CRAP and the second year in Asheboro. 36 Urals and 1 Dnepr were present. 5 other makes were there, including 2 sidecar rigs. A bit of explanation may be in order. We’re not computer experts, but we enjoy our Soviet Steeds, and, since a sidecar was often called a “hack” in past days, the term fits us. Last year, a Ural owner produced patches to take advantage of today’s political atmosphere to make a joke of it. For those motorcycle enthusiasts who may not be familiar with Russian motorcycles, here’s a bit of history: Before World War II, the Soviets were unable to produce a satisfactory Military motorcycle for the Red Army. Their last failed attempt was a bizarre motorcycle made at a sewing machine factory in Podolsk. Under the terms of the Molotov/Ribbentrop Pact, Germany provided the Soviet Union with technology in return for agricultural products. The 1938 BMW R71 was deemed obsolete because BMW had designed a better engine and a new model, the R75. BMW and the German Government gave the Soviets the plans and tooling for the R71 and by 1942 the Reds were producing sidecar motorcycles, now renamed the “M72” at a factory in Moscow. After the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, the motorcycle factory was moved to a new factory (Irbitsky Moto Zavod – IMZ), in Irbit, Siberia, east of the Ural Mountains and out of range of the German Air Force. After the War, another motorcycle factory (Kiev Moto Zavod – KMZ) was built in Kiev, Ukraine, near the Dnepr River to produce “Dnepr” motorcycles for the Red Army. KMZ closed in the early 1990’s. IMZ continued to produce “Ural” motorcycles for the civilian and foreign export market. Around 2000, private investors bought the Ural Factory, reduced the staff and facility and began to modernize the product. For the first CRAP ever, we had a large contingent arrive a day early. Sixteen of us invaded the Sagebrush steakhouse for dinner on May 3d. Most of the folks arrived on Friday. That night, we descended on a local seafood restaurant. After breakfast on Saturday morning we went on an organized ride led by Fourpaws and had lunch in Liberty, NC at Beaver Creek BBQ. After that, Niteblues had GAMES for us. The featured event was the Limp Stick Jousting Contest. A double line of targets (plastic rings) were set up. When the whistle blew, Ural drivers and their monkeys (a term of endearment for sidecar passengers…) attempted to spear the rings with lances made of swim noodles.
Adult beverages from Russia were available.
After the games, the main event – the potluck. The food was terrific – from bratwurst to hamburgers to roast pork, barbecue and – you name it. Superlatives? Longest drive to the rally? 1,171 miles by Penrod from Portland, Maine. (2,592 mile round trip!) Runner up was Mustang Boss and his service dog from Orlando, Florida. Oldest driver was Navy TM at 84. Youngest driver (unofficially, of course) was Toon’s 13 year old son. Oldest rig: JohnR’s Dnepr Newest rig: Festis’ 2018 Gear Up. Most modified: Burt123

This build started out as a 2009 HD Road King. Just like a snake, it shed its skin and morphed into something incredible! Why a snake, you ask? BJ breeds and sells Pythons. BJ Ongaro, owner of BJs Dirt Bikes and ATVs in Sims, NC, built this bike. Building runs in BJ’s family. His dad, Butch Ongaro, won the Masters Show in 1999 with Arlen Ness. Sadly, his dad passed away in 2007. He has a brother named Chris, who made Super Chevy Magazine, a brother, Tony who made it into the pages of VW Magazine.
Lots of people help make this build happen! Big thanks to Steve Carter, aka Paint Pimp, of Hamlet, N.C. Also, a big thanks to the guys at the Biker Barn in Spring Hope, N.C. Gary, Gregg and Big Will were super and hooked me up on parts and with some repairs along the way. I want to thank my wife, Melissa Ongaro for being my rock. Also, my mechanic, Tyler Quinn, Jonathan at B&S Wholesale Tire, Rick Keim, R and D Tools, RC Components, Speed By Design, Crazy Beaver Customs, Josh Sewell, Josh Andrews and Troy Swarver for the seat. ~ BJ Ongaro

Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson had many vendors set-up in the back parking lot, as they always do. They also had a huge tent sale with discontinued and obsolete Genuine Harley-Davidson Merchandise. The Harley Shop at the Beach had a large inventory of new and pre-owned Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. They were also the place for Harley-Davidson rentals for the Rally! Myrtle Beach HD really went above and beyond again for their events that were spread out from Little River all the way down to Murrells Inlet! We had a blast and are so looking forward to Fall Bike Week and the Hurrican Alley Rally! Hope to see you there!

from the
mind of big ed ends meet and we go on living and although we have all we need to survive. I feel this feeling, this yearning in the back of my mind. I can tell...I need therapy. Sure, I’ve been known to go nuts and lose my sh*t, but that type of mental therapy is not what’s calling me. It’s the wind and the two wheel type of therapy.
Big Ed aka 2Timer
Hello all you happy people!!! I was on my way to work just trying to free my mind up from the day in and out drama that some how manifests into my life. While doing so, a motorcycle passes me in the passing lane on Hwy 70. I watched the bike as it slowly left my sight. The license plate light was just barely visible as it made its glow in the night time air. I was wishing that I, too, had rode my bike. I rolled down the window of my little family’s minivan. I then placed my left arm outside to feel the warm spring night time air. I let my hand just flow with the fast moving wind as I drove. I day dreamt for a moment of my hand holding on to the handle bars. I can almost feel the resistance of the air pushing back on me. I reach over to my vans stereo and play the song ”Orion” from Metallica. I can almost see the apes in my view as I stare off to the highway ahead of me.
This is how I know I’m a biker, folks. ‘Cause, I need the wind man! I need the feeling of the road! I need those pipes blasting behind me! I need to twist the throttle back!. I need to leave the demons that dance on my back behind me! I need to see that horizon in front of my ape hangers, man! I didn’t become a biker because it was cool. I didn’t become a biker because of some trend. It’s in my blood! It’s who I am. No, I’m not a bar hopper. I can honestly say that If I never stepped into another bar it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. I don’t need a bar. I don’t need a “place” to be my destination. To hell with stop signs man!!! Just give me miles of highway and back country roads. I need the smell of the air and the sting of bugs slapping their final breath of life against me. I want to see the people who dig this type of life sharing the road with me. Hard times in life is just a dust trail behind my rear tire when I ride. I release it all, man. I don’t think of bills. I don’t think of work. I don’t think of drama. I leave the world behind me, man. If I can’t carry it with me while I ride. I just don’t need it. Just let me feel my wife’s arms wrapped me and we both let go of the world around us. Just for a ride. Just taste that breeze! Just dig the rumble of my pipes man! HELL YEAH!!
I’m just gonna leave it like that.. Big Ed / 2Timer
Life has been running a bit bump for the last couple of months. Just the building up of bullsh*t in my bucket. I got a new job, so trying to get on broad with the new responsibilities that come with that. Then trying to get my pay check in order so the child support drafts comes out of my check automatically so I don”t have to worry about facing jail time but Jesus H Christ, trying to get the Child support enforcement office to do their job by simply answering a phone is a pain! Then dealing with the baby mama drama cause she’s waiting on them funds. Not to mention, all that comes with another court case hearing. Then dealing with a lawyer and how he wants to also relieve me from my hard earned cash. Life can just beat you up. I’m no different than any other man that wants to support his family. I’m not a lazy slack a$$. I go to work. I give the man what he pays me for. I come home to my beautiful wife and family. We make the

Raleigh, N.C. This was the 4th Goodguys Rod & Custom Association NC Nationals at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C., on April 27-29. Every year it gets bigger and better with so many events to participate in and so many things to see! There were hundreds of gorgeous vehicles to look at and the event covered such a large area at the fairgorunds that the entire gang rented motorized chairs. They provide these for anyone that is interested in paying by the day or hour to use them. With well over 1,500 hot rods, customs, classic, muscle cars & trucks the North Carolina Nationals was held outside as well as inside with vendors and exhibitors from around the country. They had a swap meet & cars for sale corral. Inside there was a historic race care exhibit. Plus, an indoor car show and Goodguys Autocross and Autocross for kids! There was also Nitro Thunderfest and a burn out competition! This year they welcomed vehicles thru 1987!

It started with Easyriders and In the Wind magazines Seeing the bikes and nude models in my dreams The Flats, Knuckles, Shovels, and Pans I couldn’t wait to get the throttle in my hand Finally the dream came true in time The biker lifestyle I live I share in rhyme Chasing sunsets or a rainbows end When the rubber hits the road the memories begin Miraculous Mutha cartoons, David Mann’s epic biker art I vividly recall each time I hear my HD’s start A ride today brings flashbacks from the past In the choppers, café racers and bobbers I pass Today, I ride a bagger; it’s easier on these old bones But the big wheel, stretched bags trend I’ve left alone My lifestyle’s grounded and founded by these biker mags I feel old school pride when I fly my rags Today, I’m in the wind with the Red Knights MC Old school mixed with new school I do believe I’ll never forget the inspiration I received From these old school treasures I believe these mags to be

2nd Annual
South Central Bike Fest
CHASE CITY, VA Second Annual South Central Bike Fest The second annual South Central Bike Fest held June 7, 8, & 9, 2018 at the Chase City Fire Department Training Grounds was a huge success this year according to the feedback received from numerous volunteers and participants. This event was held in support of local cancer victims by raising funds for the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association and the Barksdale Cancer Foundation located in Charlotte County. Both of these organizations provide monetary help to individuals dealing with cancer in both counties. It was a busy three days! Campers started rolling in on Thursday but the BB Crew did not arrive until Friday. On Friday there was a Cruise In with local classic cars, trucks and hot rods and that was topped off with live entertainment from the band, Moonshine Son. There were lots of vendors with food and biker stuff! The night ended with fireworks! Saturday’s events included a Poker Run, Bike Show, Raffle Drawing, Bike Rodeo, Bangin’ Bikini Bike Wash, Vendors, and social time. There was music provided throughout the event by Konnection Band. They took the stage later in the evening to start the late night fun and dancing. The night ended with firewroks again! Without the support of numerous sponsors, volunteers and participants, this first event would not have been successful. The Chase City Fire Department generously returned the payment for the use of the training grounds in support of the cause. All the hard work and support paid off, resulting in a sizeable donation to both organizations. Planning has already started for the 3rd Annual South Central Bike Fest. The planning committee learned a lot from this first and second event, and they welcome anyone who’s interested in helping next year to reach out by emailing info@scbfest.org. We want to extend sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who lent their support. Hope to see you there next year!
