motor maids inducted into sturgis hall of fame On August 5th I kissed my husband goodbye, saddled up my motorcycle and headed for Sturgis, S.D. First stop - I was on my way to meet Rose in West Virginia that same morning. My route took me down part of I-64 from Lex. Va. to Beckley, WV. The ride was awesome! I was running about 75 mph and enjoying the curves and cool morning, when I saw something black coming out of the woods on the other side. Oh no! It was a black bear getting ready to cross the road. Do I stop in the curve and maybe even in his path? ...what about the 18 wheeler behind me? I turned on the gas, running about 85. As I went by the bear crossed into the median. I kept watching in my mirror to make sure he got across OK...and he did. I met up with Rose M. from S.C., and we continued on our way to meet up with Sammie W. in Iowa. Sammie is from Pa. We had five days to get to SD, so we did a lot of back roads. If you go out that way, look up RT 44 in SD. It takes you into the Badlands and into Rapid City. It is a beautiful ride through the hills, valleys, rivers and lots of wild life. Why were we going? Two Motor Maids (Golden Life Members) were being inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame! Gloria Struck, and Margaret Wilson. Margaret’s husband of 68 years, Mike, was also being inducted. The ceremony was held during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We wanted to be there on August 10th, 2011 for our friends and we were, along with 27 other MM from about 20 states! Gloria joined the Motor Maids in 1946 and is one of the longest active members in the group’s 71-year history. Gloria has owned 14 motorcycles during the past 65 years and currently rides a 2004 HarleyDavidson Heritage Softail Classic, which she rode from New Jersey to Sturgis for the rally, averaging 600 miles a day. She grew up around motorcycles, with her dad and mom owning a motorcycle shop in Clifton, N.J. That shop is now run by her nephew and it just celebrated its 95th anniversary. Gloria has logged more than 500,000 miles and has ridden through all 48 continental states many times over.

Gloria Struck, age 86 (MM member for 65 years) and Margaret Wilson, age 91 (MM member for 60 years) were inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota. Both of these marvelous ladies still ride!

Gloria Struck, Margaret Wilson & Mike Wilson (rt) Margaret and Mike Wilson opened a Harley-Davidson Dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1950. Ever since then they have been very active in motorcycling.They ran a Harley dealership for 25 years. Mike then continued a dirt-track racing career he’d started years before at age 19. Meanwhile, Margaret was also making a name for herself in the motorcycle industry, joining the Motor Maids in 1951 and promoting them wherever she went. Over the years, the Wilsons have sponsored race teams and supported several national and local motorcycle associations. Today, both serve on the board of directors for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio, and are among the museum’s principal benefactors.

iBikeweek Every Year in October motorcycles rumble into Daytona Beach signaling the beginning of Biketoberfest® As you’re cruising into town excitement builds, tailpipes roar, tattoos scream for attention and leather parades down Main Street Then the big question comes to mind, how do I take in all of the events? Many people have been asking the same questions for years. After listening to many Bike Week stories I quickly realized that there is an array of experiences during an event like this but inevitably people return from their annual Bike Rally vacation to learn that they missed an epic event, and you can see the look of disappointment in their face. One Motorcycle enthusiast explained to me, I scoured the internet, and found a local Business Association that had released a Smart Phone APP. After using it to guide me through the events he exclaimed I quickly realized I was seeing Bike Week with Blinders, basically I was being guided through the Association members events and because of that missed some great parties. After having the same experiences year after year Motorcycle enthusiast and Rally veteran Chris Thompson decided to do something about it, after researching the current technology Thompson vowed to give attendees a clear line of site to all of the events regardless if the venue was a member of an association or paid for advertising. After diligently speaking with the biker community understanding what they wanted to get out of their Bike Rally experience and months of mapping out how this would be accomplished iBikeweek Smart Phone APP evolved, within 60 days of launching their Face Book page they receiving over 128,000 page views, and over 80,000 active monthly users the team knew they were on the right track. iBikeweek APP was introduced as a BETA test during the 2011 Biketoberfest ® in Daytona Beach FL, the feedback that iBikeweek team received was overwhelmingly possitive, Paul Sellers from Maryland said he has attended the event for 9 years, and by using the APP it gave him a totally different perspective on the events surrounding the rally, he said this year was a totally awesome experience the APP allowed him to enjoy things that he would normally not have been exposed to. It guided him through the rally alerting them of contest, concerts and rides, Biker friendly venues outside of the immediate area. Sellers commented that he couldn’t wait to experience Myrtle Beach Bike Week With the APP. After the team carefully polishes the final product it will be introduced to the Biker Community with Full fan fair at the 2012 Daytona Beach Bike Week and will quickly be introduced to 30 other major rallies across the country. Thompson Commented “this APP will enable Bikers to take the blinders off and experience Bike rallies on their own terms, it will be like having a local Biker Buddy”

Home grown music is alive and well in Northeastern North Carolina, thanks to the efforts of people like Ann Meadows with Joey and Jenny Bryum, founders and hosts of the Dream Acres Music Festival. The whole thing started in 2002 as a birthday bash for a few friends on their 20th birthday. (40 is the new 20...right?) A group of people would meet at the late JonAnna Warren's home to celebrate with great live local music, good food and just an all around good time. Such a good time was had by all that Ann had the idea to share this kind of entertainment with the public, plus showcase these great local talents. Joey & Jenny offered up their Dream Acres Farm as a venue, and the Dream Acres Music Festival was born. Since then, the festival has become a non-profit organization and has been supporting local charities such as the Andrienne Ivey Scholarship. This year they added their own charity to the list, The Dream Acres Fine Art Scholarship. These scholarships help students in Northampton and Halifax County. This event has taken on a life of its own, and is growing larger each year. This year, the festival's 7th annual, had over 15 bands and a charity poker run, co-sponsored by The Dawg Pak, as well as food and other vendors. This year's event was held September 23rd-25th. Donald Casey, Master of Ceremonies, got performers cranked up on Friday around 4:00 o'clock. The music lasted until deep in the night. Performing Friday were, Jackie Ruffin, Matt Chambers, Scott & Jay, The Glorious Abstract, and capping Friday night off was the Willie Peebles Band. Saturday started off with a bang with up and coming musicians, Newsome/Jones, the party continued with Levi Garrett & Friends, Blades of Grass, Meredith Lyn Collins, Tony Dickens & Friends, The Darns, Koostic Thang, Simple Things, The Peoples Blues Band, and finishing the night off was TheCove. Sunday was open mic for any and all that wanted to play.

Ann Meadows, the main event organizer, said that "This year's DAMF was one of the best ever, as far as talent on site and community support to make it happen. The Dawg Pak and their friends not only helped raise money through providing food for the event, they also helped by allowing the winners of their co-sponsored 1st Annual Dream Acres Poker Run (and you know who you are) to donate their winnings back to the scholarships fund." Other local supporters were Dr. Thomas A Mebane O.D., The M.A.N., Roanoke Valley Motor sports, Roanoke Porta-Johns, BehindBarz Magazine, Hohner Guitars, and Pat Tanner of TheCove for designing the event posters, along with Stevie Harrell of the Willie Peebles Band for all his help. "It's only one direction for us," Ann says, "and that's forward." We want future festivals to be bigger and better. Plans are in the works for on-site shower facilities & constructing a barn built for sound to use as a venue not only for the festival, but for other local special events as well as a safe place for local budding musicians to come and learn how to play an instrument. Once future grant monies are in place, we look forward to having instructors on site to also help low income students take music lessons. John Vaudo Heaven Bound Custom Car Club helps Edgecombe County Military Veterans Museum story & photos:

Saturday, August 20th, started out as a foggy overcast, but that did not dampen the spirits of Heaven Bound Custom Car Club. They were on a mission to help the Edgecombe County Military Veterans Museum raise some much needed money for renovations of the Museum and old Colonial Theater behind it. The morning started off a little slow but before the Tarboro High Air Force Jr. ROTC Honor Guard officially opened the event at about noon, the parking lots were nearly full of cars, trucks and motorcycles. There were even a couple of motorized bicycles in the show. Biker Style Deals was on hand to sell there motorcycle accessories, Resurrection Riders were present to share the word and there were a couple of food vendors on hand to fill the hollow spots in folk’s stomachs. The ECVM and American Legion had a booth and there was a woman there to help entertain the kids with animal balloons. Cars and trucks ranged in age and vintage, from the 1920’s up to 2011 Camaros and Ponies. The bikes were the same from a beautifully decked out 1941 Knuckle to a 2011 Harley-Davidson Ultra. The winners in the Motorcycle class were: 1st Place Dennis Coker with a Harley Ultra, Luther Knight 2nd Place also with a Harley and Charlie Staton 3rd Place with a Yamaha Road Star. For the “cages” Best Import went to Gregory Godwin, Best Ford to Keith Shevlin, Best Mopar was taken by Brenda Harris, Best GM truck was had by Donnie Lancaster and Best GM car by Billy Ray Vick. Best in Show was such a hard call but it was finally decided that Daniel Richardson had the best looking vehicle there. Heaven Bound Customs very own,Cody Warren, took home the Mascot trophy, which was about as big as he was. All in all a very positive day, The American Legion gained 2 new members, the Museum raised about $1000 and had a couple of hundred visitors it doesn’t usually get. According to Ellis Cullipher of the Museum’s Board of Directors, there were 52 cars entered and 11 bikes. He said he heard nothing but good things at the show.

CMN poker run The first annual poker run for Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Miracle Network was held at McLane Carolina in Gold Rock, N.C. The weather was cold and rainy on Sept. 17, 2011. Despite the weather conditions approximately 40 bikes participated. Lots of door prizes were given away, which included 10 gift cards valued at $300, a helmet, fork bag, party tub, t-shirts, and hats. We also held a 50/50 drawing. Fresh cooked BBQ and fixings were served by award winner Mike Pittard and his crew. The poker run stops included - Two Wheels Accessories and Twin County Motor Sports both of Rocky Mount, CycleMax in Wilson, The Biker Barn in Zebulon and back to McLean Carolina. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success! McLean Carolina is already looking forward to next years event The 2nd Annual Childrens Miracle Network. The date will be on September 15th 2012. Everyone is invited and all bikes are welcome to come out and have a good time and show support for the Children. Edgecombe co.ghost riders Edgecombe County Ghost Riders hosted their 7th Anniversary party on August 12-14th. The guys planned and hoped for good weather, but sadly that was the one thing they had no control of. The weather of scattered showers around the state and immediate area didn’t dampen the spirits of the Club or their guests that came out to party with the guys. Guests included members from other Ghost Rider Chapters (Nash, Lenior, Wayne, Duplin, Wilson, and Martin Counties; not to mention honorary member TJ and family), Scorpions, Iron Order, Freedom Riders, Leather & Lace, CBA, and several independent riders and friends of the Club. With two bars open and plenty of room for camping the Club assured their guests could have a good time without the worry of getting back on the road. Tunes were played at each bar for the guests with tables set up for enjoying conversations with old and new friends. Around 4pm their guests feasted like kings on a spread of BBQ chicken, snaps, potatoes, tossed salad, ¼ cabbage, deviled eggs, and baked ziti. Afterwards an awesome cake that was made by Susan Chesson was brought out for dessert. During the course of the day, Duchess, went around with a jar collecting donations for the Nash County Ghost Riders, whose Clubhouse caught fire and burnt down the weekend before. Approximately $150.00 was taken up and presented to Newt (Nash County member) for the Clubs rebuilding fund and the jar was then placed on the bar for any other donations any of the guests wanted to contribute. Although the rain slowed down the arrival of many guests and stopped others from coming out, the party was an enjoyable and fun time. All attending had a great time and left with a feeling of friendship and brotherhood. Great job guys….

On June 28th 2011, after about a year of seizures and many visits to neurologists at Duke University Hospital,our 9 year old daughter Ally was having a functional EEG performed and they found a baseball sized tumor in her left frontal lobe. They diagnosed it as a Ewings Sarcoma . This is a very rare type of cancer in the brain, it is usually found in the bones. Surgery was performed on June 30th to remove as much of the tumor as they could. The surgery went well with them removing at least half of the tumor, the other half was left because they didn't want to effect any speech or motor skills. After about 4 weeks in ICU, the next step was how to treat the remaining part of the tumor. Our oncologist Dr G (don't know how to pronounce his last name and that's what he likes to be called) set out a plan of multiple cycles of chemotherapy and then radiation to follow. We have been through 4 cycles of chemotherapy alternating between 3 day and 5 day stays at the hospital about every third week. We have had two MRI's, the results from the first were very positive. The tumor had shrunk to about one-third the post surgery size. We are still waiting for the results from the second one. This is the path Ally has taken up to now.

This is where the Rally for Ally was born. A few selfless good friends and family had an idea about 8 weeks ago and God and prayer led them to what turned into the most phenomenal event of friendship and fellowship you could ever see. You could definitely see that there were a lot of sleepless nights and hard work done to put this event together. We were not sure of all the specifics of the event, and definitely didn't expect it to be as big as it had become. I would like to list all the family, friens, vendors, volunteers and people that donated the door prizes and funds to make this event the success that it was, but the list would take up a whole page. I will condense it a little and give a shout out to some wonderful people, that for one day made a sick little girl feel very special. Behind Barz Motorcyle Magazine's Debbie, for the advertising and support of the event, The Enforcers Motorcycle Club, for all their support, volunteers, and making us feel like one of their own. The owners of Creech's Deli in Zebulon, Bill and Melissa and their crew in the food and bake sale tents, The crew from Wicked Worx Kustomz, and Biker Bob. These businesses truly showed where their hearts are, so please support them. Special thanks to Ronnie Hart, Mike Himmel, Eric Bennett, Glenn Bunn, and Corinth Community Recreation for the use of the facilities. They have no idea how much all their hard work means to our family. Everyone else, you know who you are and we will be thanking you soon personally.

The morning of the event, which turned out to be a beautiful day, Allly could not wait to get there. About every half hour she would ask "when are we going?", and we would just say "soon". When we did get there, we were greeted by lots of old friends and many new ones. There were shirts for sale, a bake sale, bbq pork, chicken and all the fixins' for lunch, vendors showing off their beautiful custom work, and a bike show. Ally was in heaven, the smile on her face was priceless! Then the riders started coming in from the poker run and added more motorcycles to the already filled field of bikes. There were three bands that were absolutely great! They were, Ordinary Sinners, Chariot Awaits, and Shield of Salvation. They had a great message and testimony for anyone who was listening. There were plenty of door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and a drawing for a shotgun, gift certificate at Sacred Flames Tattoos, and an Ipod Touch. Not many left empty handed, I didn't think the door prizes were ever going to end. To top it all off they asked Ally to judge the bike show. After having to turn down several bribes, she truly picked out her favorite American and Metric motorcycles. She did good with her judging, I was thinking of the same ones she picked. while judging the bike show she kept asking to get a ride on a motorcycle. The first person that heard her did not hesitate to make her wish come true. That made her day and Curtis has a special place in our heart for doing this for her and she didn't want to get off ! There were lots of hugs and tears passed around and it was an awesome day for Ally. This was her summer vacation that she did not get, and it means a lot to us. Again, a hearfelt thank you to everyone that worked and came to the event. This day truly showed that God is in charge! We know we are far from over on Ally's journey, but on this day she truly felt loved. Continue praying for Ally because the prayers are working. We are truly blessed.

The Behind Barz Presentz Bike Nightz series has been an awesome ride! Our bike nightz at EFFE in Zebulon and Redmonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Goldsboro were two of our latest events and they were the 8th and 9th of the regular season! Coverage of the finale at Bobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pub will be in the next issue. EFFE - The Enforcers and BHC had BBQ for everyone and the Miller Girls were on hand with smiles and Miller prizes! They had cornhole in the parking lot and a DJ to entertain folks throughout the evening. Thanks to the vendors who set up for this event: Black Creek Leather Wurkz, Twin Performance Tuners, Wicked Worx Kustomz, Concerned Bikers Association & The Rally For Ally Committee. The Enforcers MC donated over $1,000 to Ally Himmel at the Rally For Ally fund raising event to help 9 year old Ally and her family. She is fighting the fight of her life right now against cancer. Thanks goes out to EFFE for all your help this year with all the BB Bike Nightz!!!

The bikes lined the street along the railroad track in downtown Goldsboro for Behind Barz Presentz Bike Nightz at Redmon’s On Center St. Pub & Grill. This was the ninth in the series of BB Bike Nightz. True to form, Dean put out an awesome spread, fit for a king! It was like Thanksgiving had come early! There was even strawberry shortcake. ...and it didn’t sit there on the table for long! There were also several beer special throughout the evening. There were lots of prizes won on the Behind Barz Prize Wheel. Thanks goes out to RA Jeffreys Budweiser Distributor in Goldsboro for the many prizes they donated for this event.

a day behind barz Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience what goes on in the making of a magazine? I had the pleasure of doing just that on 9-10-11. I was invited to tag along with Ernie (Bald Eagle) Murphy, also dubbed Cowboy (my nickname for him), to 3 events scheduled for that day. My job was to take pictures, gather information on the events for the magazine and help promote the magazine. We were scheduled to meet at 10 am for the first event, which was being held at Shelton’s Harley Davidson in Goldsboro, NC. Of course, Ernie being the man that he is had to make a Grand entrance to the event by riding in with The Unspoken Sons. I was able to meet Nasty, the President of The Unspoken Sons and several of the other members of the MC. Now this was an event of its own. Those guys really know how to have some fun. It was a pleasure to meet these guys and have a chance to talk and hang with them for awhile.

After going our own way, we headed in to attend Goldsboro Hogs 1st Annual Bike Show, BBQ Cook-off and Military Appreciation Day. All monies collected were used to support local charities. There was a Bikini Bike Wash, Bike Show and several cars and trucks were there for the Car and Truck Show. There were 6 entries in The BBQ Cook-off. All entries in each show and cook-off were voted on by the public. I tried all the BBQ and ate enough that there was no need to have to buy lunch. They were all winners in my opinion. Entertainment was provided by Southern Impact. They played music during the Entire event. If you ever get a chance to see these guys, do so. They put on a Rock’n show. Occasionally Cowboy would get lost, but he was usually easily found. All I had to do was head over to the bikini bike wash and low and behold he would be there. It was no doubt that he was definitely enjoying himself there.

There were plenty of Vendors there to talk with and to keep the change rolling out of your pocket. I don’t think I have ever talked so much in my life. Cowboy is definitely a “People Person” and he had definitely made an impression on folks that day. He had really gotten the word out about the magazine. We had passed out all the magazines and cards and people were still asking for them. I would definitely call this event a success. A Great job goes out to Jimmy Brown, President of Goldsboro Hogs and everyone that helped put on this event. Cowboy and I agreed that we would definitely be there again next year.

The second event was also being held at Shelton’s HD: The 1st Annual Jacobs Run. This event was held to memorialize Jacob Floars, the seventeen year old son of Katherine and Allen Floars that was lost in an automobile accident on October 10, 2010. Mr. Floars spent almost an entire year organizing the motorcycle ride. All monies raised were to benefit the Children’s Hospital Fund. Approximately 130 men and women rolled into Shelton’s on their motorcycles to ride for Jacob that day. Many more not on bikes also helped to support this ride. The bikes left Shelton’s at 12:30 pm. It was a beautiful site seeing all those bikers pulling out of that parking lot riding for Jacob. I am not ashamed to say that it brought tears to my eyes. Their first stop would be at Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital in Greenville, NC. Due to parking lot construction, only 15 bikes were able to go there, the rest would continue on to Hometown HD in Winterville, NC. At the Hospital, some of the kids were able to come out to see the bikes and to visit with the bikers. The Hospital allowed 5 riders into the Hospital to visit with the kids that were unable to come out. As told by Megan Snead, a member of the Chrome Horses MRC, upon the arrival of all the bikers at Hometown HD, some Representatives from The Children’s Hospital made a speech to the supporters.

BBQ plates were served and Entertainment was provided by Tuesday’s Gone. Megan went on to tell how the band had donated their time at no charge and that Mr. Danny Orrick, a member of the band, whom was also Jacob’s guitar teacher used Jacob’s guitar while playing his favorite song “Simple Man”. She said there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd after that performance. It was a good feeling to see the Biker Community pull together for a Great cause. I am sure that Jacob was looking down on all those men and women that supported this cause and I am sure he had a Great Big Smile on his face. I have no doubt that Jacob will be remembered and remain in each and everyone’s hearts that attended this Event.

Next stop was at the AR Outlaw Jerky vendor, which undoubtedly had the best beef jerky I have ever eaten. Don’t tell anyone, but it happens to be Doobies favorite too. You could tell that they knew The Behind Barz magazine well. It was proudly displayed amongst their beef jerky and yes they had the BB sticker proudly displayed on their trailer. Click, click, click. You know Doobie just loves pictures of that BB sticker. There were many more vendors there that we met and we passed out magazines and business cards to everyone until we had run out. We met Sam Shipp the Organizer of the rally. He was excited that Behind Barz was attending the Rally.

Well it was time for Cowboy and I to head out to Emerald Isle for the 8th Annual Emerald Isle Bike Rally, but first we had to make a stop in Kinston and get more Behind Barz Magazines and business cards. I got a chance to meet Mr. and Mrs. Murphey. I could have just stayed there and visited the rest of the day. Mr. Murphey showed me pictures of some of the Antique cars he had restored and told me stories of his racing days and even a few about Cowboy that I am unable to share with you. LOL!!! Mrs. Murphey showed me some of the handmade quilts she was making and her doll collection. All I can say is WOW!!! It was such a pleasure meeting them. Just good ole, down home Country folks. You can’t get any better than that. Well, Cowboy and I headed towards Emerald Isle for the Rally on our Harleys and the closer we got the more excited I got. You see, rallies are one of my favorite things to attend. When we pulled in at the rally, I don’t know who had the biggest smile on their face, Cowboy or me. We parked our bikes amongst the throng of hundreds of bikes and jumped off our bikes grinning from ear to ear and we both said “Oh yeah!” As we entered the gate the first thing we saw was the stunt riders putting on a hell of a show. Many clicks of the camera later we both got a chance to meet the two riders, Dirty George and Dave Dalmasso. One of the riders even had on a Behind Barz t-shirt. Naturally, more pictures had to be taken. Heading on over to the Vendors, I heard someone holler Ernie!!! Turning, I said, “I can’t believe it! That is Bob Bryant,The Biker Wolf Poet!” Cowboy just grinned and said come on. I said, “you don’t have to wait on me.” I couldn’t believe I was getting a chance to meet him. Click, click, click. I wouldn’t have been anymore happier if I had met Captain Jack Sparrow on a deserted island. I even got his autograph. I must say that was one of the highlights of my evening at the rally.

There was a bike show, bands, good food, and some of the coldest beer in NC. Everyone was having a blast. We met a bunch of people and ate so much that I wondered if we would be able to walk back to our bikes. We got a chance to meet one of the coolest guys after he did one heck of a burnout. Click, click, click. Look out Rob!!! You might finally have some competition coming your way from Anthony Vallario. Several hours later, after handing out a couple hundred magazines, cards and taking hundreds of pictures, it was time to head to the hotel. Before we could make it to our bikes, ole Cowboy got to play hero to a beautiful girl in distress. There sat a girl on one of the baddest choppers I have ever seen. She went to crank that ole bike up and all that cranked up was the smoke. I looked at Cowboy and I said, “Man, she just fried that battery!” Cowboy just struts over there and gives the lady a hand and says, “If I can get you up and running, can you make it home?” I looked at him and I wouldn’t dare put on paper what I was thinking. I stood there watching as he tinkered on that bike and said “Fire it up!” That ole chopper started up with a growl of true awesomeness. With my mouth dropped open, I watched as he turned around and gave me a wink and the biggest smile I have ever seen, lit up that girls face. Cowboy had saved the day!!! That girl rode off into the sunset like John Wayne would have done in a Blaze of Glory. And yes I had to click one more time on my much abused camera, so ole Cowboy could have a picture of the beautiful lady on the baddest chopper I have ever seen. As we were headed to the hotel, riding under a full moon, I was thinking about all that we had done that day and all the people we had met. I had seen how bikers come together for a good cause and helped a grieving family heal a little and I had seen bikers gather for the sake of just having a good time. I shared in a true brother and sisterhood out there that day. I am proud to be one of the members of one of the largest families in the world, The Biker Family. I experienced that day what Freedom truly is……Freedom is “Life Behind Barz!” I want to Thank everyone that I met that day. It was a pleasure meeting each and every one of you. Thanks Cowboy for letting me hang out with you and making it one of the best adventures of my life. Thanks Doobie for letting me tell this story. You are truly a friend to the Biker world. Sometimes I’m asked to tell a funny thing that I’ve done. About two years ago, I was at a 3K dog walk to benefit the SPCA. My driver and I were the only ones to arrive on a bike, and there were hundreds of dogs there. We went to the registration table and my driver was given a clip board and pen. He stepped out of the line, and dropped to one knee to complete the paperwork. I wanted my friends to know that my driver was mine, so I marked his hip. By the time I finished, the wetness soaked through his jeans, and he jumped up and yelled “Chewy!” I jumped back as if to play, wagging my tail and giving him my happy look of “What?!?!” My driver’s jeans dried during the walk, but everyone thought he stunk. That was the first and only time I have ever intentionally pissed on him. We did a lot since my last article. The USO of North Carolina invited me to be part of the opening ceremonies at the Winston Salem Tennis Open on August 22. I had the pleasure of meeting several members of the North Carolina National Guard, a wounded Marine and Miss North Carolina USA (Brittany York). That was my first time on a professional tennis court and at an opening ceremony. Neither my driver nor I knew what to do, so we just followed the cool bagpiper. On August 27, Hurricane Irene was running up the east coast of North Carolina. We had tropical storm conditions when we left our house to ride to Asheville. We ran into bands of heavy rain and wind until we were between Greensboro and Winston-Salem where we had partly cloudy skies and nice temperatures. We rode a scenic route through Diamondback (NC 226A), a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Devil’s Staircase (NC 80) on our way to Asheville. The S-curves on NC 80 were fun as my driver pushed my Harley left and right several times. We also stopped at the grand opening of Harley-Davidson of Asheville, where we linked up with Raleigh HOG and spent time with Scott Northrup, who is the General Manager of the new dealership. While at the dealership, I let my driver off his leash in a huge field adjacent to the shop. He got away from me and I ran through some mud back to the dealership to find him.

My driver said he was going to give me a bath at the hotel, but Keith Zionts suggested taking me to the bikini bike wash. My driver had baby shampoo in our saddle bag, and I turned it into a bikini biker-dog wash. Why did we ride to Asheville through a storm? My driver and I were part of Team Brady led by Keith Zionts. Brady is five years old and has a brain tumor. He couldn’t attend the Asheville Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) Ride for Kids last year because he was undergoing chemo. My driver promised to have me at the event in 2011 if Brady was going to be there. On Sunday morning, we linked up with Raleigh HOG and Statesville HOG south of Asheville and rode to Biltmore Square Mall, the starting point for the PBTF Ride for Kids. We don’t know how many bikes were there, but we know it was a few hundred. The police-escorted ride took us on a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway and then on a highway to Lake Lure. It was a pawrific day to put my tongue in the wind! At Lake Lure, lunch was served for the Celebration of Life. One of the riders didn’t like her sandwich, so she gave it to me. It was a ham sandwich and I loved it! Team Brady placed in the top five in fund raising and we had our pictures taken with the Stars. At the Ride for Kids, the children are referred to as Stars. After the Celebration of Life, we rode with Raleigh HOG back to Raleigh led by Steve Metz.

On September 10, we participated in the USO Freedom Ride led by Rolling Thunder NC4. I spent a few minutes with Miss North Carolina USA and I asked her to help me with a project for a child. The project involved a cut out named Flat Stanley and Flat Stanley had to have his picture taken at different places. It was so pawsome that Miss North Carolina helped us out with this elementary school project! Two paws up to Brittany! Rolling Thunder NC4 asked us to be road guards. Being a road guard allowed us pawtastic photo and video opportunities. Unfortunately, the memory card in our camera became corrupt and we lost over 400 pictures and about 45 minutes of video.

Sniffed That We spent two days trying to recover as much data as we could from the memory card. Many thanks to the LEO departments that ensure our safety: Wake County Sheriffs Dept, Harnett County Sheriffs Dept, Coats PD, Lillington PD, and Apex PD. I apologize if I missed anyone. You can view what we recovered on my Facebook page or on the USO Freedom Ride music video on my website. On September 24, I helped Operation Helping Hands for Heroes (OHHH) at their fund raising tent at Benson Mule Days. I was available for photos and did my little doggie part to support OHHH. OHHH is a 501c(3) non-profit organization which focuses on helping wounded warriors. You can learn more about OHHH at www.operationhhh.org. October 1 was a busy day. We attended one event and portions of three other events. We started the day meeting the Golden Retrievers from Patriot Rovers at the Ride for the Rovers.There were six Rovers there. Patriot Rovers rescues Golden Retrievers, trains them, and assigns them as companion service dogs to a wounded warrior or veteran with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Each Rover is named after a Fallen Hero. The Patriot Rovers was founded by David Cantara.

David sometimes refers to me as the “original Patriot Rover.” We were told that part of the idea for the Patriot Rovers comes from my background of being rescued and bringing comfort to people. Patriot Rovers is a 501c(3) non-profit organization. For more info about Patriot Rovers, visit www. patriotrovers.org. After the Ride for the Rovers rolled out of Ray Price HarleyDavidson, my driver attended the wedding of John Headrick and Hannah Stallings inside the showroom of Ray Price H-D. They are a pawsome couple! Since dogs are no longer allowed in the dealership, I spent time outside with Dave, the General Manager of Ray Price H-D. After the wedding, my driver and I mounted up for the annual Miracle League Ride. The Miracle League is a baseball league for children with special needs. Cary Police Department ensured we arrived safely at the ball field at Adams Elementary School in Cary, NC. The bikers put smiles on the children’s faces, and I did my part to help. After the game, the No Rules Riders led the group on back roads to Characters Quarters in Garner. After we arrived at Character Quarters, my day wasn’t over. After saying “later” to a few of our friends, we went to Locked-n-Loaded for Behind Barz Bike Nightz. You can find my video of this ride on my website. We spent time chillin’ at Locked-n-Loaded in Garner, NC. I take my driver there occasionally for lunch or dinner, and we sit in their patio area. My favorite is their Philly CheeseSteak, but hold the onions and peppers so I don’t gas bomb my driver and my mom that night. Earlier, I mentioned that dogs (pets) are no longer allowed in Ray Price H-D. That policy change went into effect during the summer. This policy has nothing to do with me or any dogs – it has everything to do with dog owners. As is typically the case, it only takes a small number of irresponsible, inconsiderate or disrespectful pet owners to make it bad for all responsible owners, good pets and biker dogs like Snoopy the Biker Dog (Driver: Tim Wall) and me. If my driver and I owned or managed a dealership, we would have implemented the same policy based on events that occurred at Ray’s. What happened? I know this is not 100% accurate, but I’m sure the dealership staff will agree that it’s generally correct. Over a few days this summer, one owner allowed his dog to piss on a tire. Two owners allowed their dogs to take dumps in the dealership – and the owners didn’t clean up after them! Hey, we’re dogs and we can’t clean-up after ourselves – that’s the dog owner’s responsibility. Dog owners should understand our body language when we have to go. My driver knows my body language, always carries poop bags on his leash, and when he sees my body language, he takes me outside, picks up after me, and everyone is happy.

My mom recently witnessed a Home Depot customer allowing her dog to take a dump near the cash registers – and she didn’t clean up after her pet! But, I think this is the kicker that led to the policy change at Ray’s. A dog owner allowed his large dog to run loose in the dealership and drag the leash. I think the leash got caught on the side stand of a bike. Guess what happened next … yyyyup … the bike went down, which triggered an insurance claim, which led to questions by the insurance company about dogs in the dealership, which led to the policy change. As I said, it takes a few people to make it bad for all of us good dogs, regardless of breed. Dogs, you need to ensure that you are well-behaved and quiet before you allow your people to bring you to public people places, such as stores or restaurants. Can you imagine the reaction of people eating at a restaurant’s patio and, at the table next to them, a dog takes a big, stinky (to humans) dump? Customers will be quickly calling for someone named up-Chuck. My driver and I have been to pet stores where dog owners didn’t clean up after their dog. Just because it’s a pet store doesn’t mean the pet owner has no responsibility to clean up. Dogs, you also need to ensure that your people are respectful and considerate of others, even in your neighborhood. For example, in the subdivision we live in, I will sometimes find where a dog took a dump in our yard while walking with their owner, and the owner didn’t pick up the mess! Why should I have to find those dumps in our yard, mark them, then bring my driver there to pick it up? I respect Ray, Miss Jean and the dealership staff for putting up with irresponsible pet owners up until this summer. My driver and I talked with them about exceptions for biker dogs, but the insurance company advised them against making any exceptions. My driver and I fully understand and respect their policy. Dogs, if you bring your drivers to Ray Price and you see that sign on the door, don’t be upset with the dealership – be upset with the pet owners who ruined a good thing for us.

The MeanStreet Riders are tentatively planning to be in Maggie Valley in early November – to RIDE, not play a concert. If my driver and I can swing it, we hope to ride with them again and stay at my favorite pet-friendly hotel: Smoky Mountain Lodge. Raleigh’s Christmas parade is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, I think. I rode with Raleigh HOG in every Raleigh Christmas parade since 2008, and it’s an opportunity to bring smiles to faces. Last year, I barfed onto the street during the parade, and you can hear the reaction of the crowd in a video. The annual Marine Corps Toys for Tots ride at Ray Price H-D is also coming up in early December. Two years ago, my Harley won first place people’s choice in a bike show in the Toys for Tots ride. My driver and I had no idea that we were entered, and we learned that the reason we won was because they thought I was an “accessory.” It’s that time of year when leaves fall from trees and I like to sniff and mark piles of leaves. If you ride on roads with fallen leaves, be careful – particularly in the morning when the leaves could be wet. Deer will be testing our reaction times and riding skills, so be careful out there! God bless America, our Fallen Heroes, those serving now, those who served, Gold Star families, and our allies.

CBA Spoker Run

On September 10th, CBA Chapters from around Eastern NC started individual Poker Runs all ending at Bobs Pub in Stantonsburg, NC. Bobs held an in house poker hand for Tar River Basin members and local supporters of CBA attending. With the arrival of 34 bikes representing Chapters from Neuse River, Granville, Raleigh, and Columbus the last cards were drawn. After a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance (in memory of those that lost their lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on September 11th, 2001) the riders settled down to some great BBQ chicken(cooked by Ken Barnhill and Stewart Vester), potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, and snaps with potatoes. Once everyone had eaten the winners of the separate runs were announced: Neuse River-Evelyn Jeffcoat, Granville County-Bryan Frank, Raleigh-Richard Godfry, Columbus County-Jimmy Grainger, and Tar River Basin-Linda Watson. Among the winners were the most members attending and that went to Tar River Basin. All members purchasing a hand had their name put in a drawing for the Grand Prize of $250.00. The big winner was Evelyn Jeffcoat, with the 50/50 winner of $60.50 going to Tyrenna Murphy. This was a great day for riding for all attending and a great day for fellowship with fellow CBA members.

CBA is an association of fellow bikers who go the extra mile by going to Raleigh and lobbying for YOUR RIGHTS of the road. Some of the issues that are involved in are: legislation concerning helmet laws, bike and biker safety issues, safety classes, and more importantly the discrimination or lack of support concerning bike accidents. They stand up for your right to be on the road, so support your local Concerned Biker Association. They fight for you!

The 5th Annual 343 Memorial Ride in memory of the 343 Fallen Firefighters on 9/11 grew to it's larget event this year. With 327 registered rIders and 218 bikes, monies were raised close to $10,000.00 - the goal for 2011. Sponsored by Red Knights NC Chapter 6 in WIlmington, NC and held at Britt Motorsports. A ceremony was held at 12:30 and included bagpiper, Mike O'Shaghnessy, playing “God Bless America” and closing with “Amazing Grace”. Kellie Fiore sang the “National Anthem”, Chaplain Eddie Williams delivered the prayer and spoke briefly on the subject of "getting around to it" - The importance of not putting off til tomorrow what you should do today because we never know when our final day will come, much like the people in the towers, the Pentagon and on Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa. Scott Britt welcomed all the riders and Vice President, Jack Jarvis, spoke on safety. Taylor Campbell rang the bell for the firefighters final call. Taylor is a WIlmington native and was a patient at the NC JAycee Burn Center at the tender age of 8 months suffering burns over 60% of her tiny body. Taylor and her family attend the event every year on behalf of the NC JAycee Burn Center which Mike Campbell is now on the board. An escorted ride around Wilmington took about 40 minutes and leading the procession was the Carolina Beach Fire Department, Northeast Duplin County and Station 8 in WIlmington NC. Special thanks to those departments, as well as, the Wilmington Police Dept. and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Dept. for the escort. Our own First Responder to the Trade Center, Jimmy Kadnar, was in attendance with his 9/11 tribute bike, as well as, a widow of a first responder in NYC and a retired NYC Firefighter. All proceeds benefit the NC JAycee Burn Center and a check will be presented to them later in the year. This event is generally held the weekend of 9/11 and this year was delayed a week due to many other 9/11 events on the 10 yr anniversary. In Our Hearts And In Our Thoughts Forever....

October 5th, 2011 all the brothers of the Unspoken Sons from Kinston, NC were in high spirits as they approached the first year anniversary as a club. Coming together at church that night they all saddled and rode to Greenville to eat dinner and talk about the upcoming events and just fellowship in the accomplishments they had made in the past 12 months. Jerry “Daytona” Jarman, one of the founding members of the club was struck by a drunk driver on his way home that night sitting at the intersection at Jackson Heights. Police say that the driver was driving at an excess of 100 mph and that Daytona never knew what hit him. In our hearts we know that he left this world with a smile on his face and love in his heart.

Daytona was a quiet man with a big heart. He loved his family, his friends, his brothers, and his club. A brother of few words but you always knew that he was around and that he had you in his heart. For those who met him, he left a lasting impression on their lives with his little sayings and sneaky little smile. He never had any bad words or hard feelings towards anyone and would give anything he had to help another. He was truly an example to all of us and will never be forgotten and will always be remembered as he was. Jerry’s visitation service was held at Pink Hill Funeral Home the night of Oct. 8th, as family and friends came to show their respects you could feel that he was looking down on us and whispering that it would be alright. He had touched so many threw his life with his music and his open heart. His life was celebrated long threw the night back at the clubhouse as people dropped by to share stories about him and to show their love. That next morning the brothers came together with family and friends to ride with Daytona one last time. And for all those there it was a beautiful day and a wonderful ride. Blue skies and open roads. To all clubs and friends that came to show support we love you as Jerry did, and we thank you for everything that you did! For ties that are UNSPOKEN and can never be explained, and these ties are deeper than just a patch, or a symbol, or a figure.

The ink of these ties are deeper than any tattoo and are shown proudly. For every SON has a father and a mother, but now standing not behind him but beside him is his brothers and in that moment one understands what is there and it doesn’t have to be explained! Kruzin for Korah

“Kruzin’ for Korah” was a bike run held on October 1st in memory of a little girl who lost her life right after her first birthday. The left side of Korah’s heart was underdeveloped and she passed away in May of 2011 while waiting for a new heart. The ride began on a beautiful fall morning at the Rocky Mount Harley Davidson. The stops included Carolina Sun Tanning, 8 Ball’s Cycle Works, and The Saltie Dog. The ride finished off at Bob’s Pub of Stantonsburg where there was tons of food, beverages, door prizes, raffles, auctions, and great music! Some of the bigger prizes included a 3-month family gym membership to the YMCA, a 3-month single gym membership to Fit 4 Life, four tickets to Disney on Ice, and a $150 tattoo certificate to New Addiction Tattoos and Body Piercing. Tons of businesses all over Wilson, NC also donated door prize items and food (see below). The bike run was a success and raised around $1,100. On October 19th, this money will be presented to 3 families at Duke Children’s Hospital that are anxiously awaiting a heart transplant for their children. Korah spent a fair amount of time at this hospital fighting every challenge that faced her, and the money will be donated in her honor.

KC’s 6th Annual “Ride Without Fear” The 6th Annual KC’s “Ride Without Fear” Poker Run was held on Saturday September 24th 2011. Approximately 30 of us riders and many non riders braved the rainy weather to support the Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Program, which helps promote the Awareness of Intimate Partner Violence. Prior to the ride, each rider was presented with a bracelet to wear that had a name inscribed on it of someone who had lost their life as a result of Domestic Violence. Each person’s story was told to the rider when receiving their bracelet. The rider’s wore their bracelets with Pride that day, a show of Remembrance to each Life lost to Domestic Violence. Escorted by the Goldsboro Police Department, the ride began at Stoney Creek Park in Goldsboro, NC. The rider’s first stop was at the beautiful Cliffs of the Neuse. The ride continued on to Whiskey Dick’s, Deacon Jones, Torero’s and the final stop was at Morgan’s Bar. A pig picking, Auction and Raffle were held for all that helped and supported this event. A GREAT time was had by all. The inclement weather did not deter this determined group of riders and supporters. All Contributions/Proceeds were presented to Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Program. Kinston, NC Welcomes Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall

It was a cool, rainy day on 9-16-11, when Lady D and I had the opportunity to visit the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, also dubbed “The Wall That Heals.” The wall is a half scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial located in Washington, D.C. The stop in Kinston was one of only two stops scheduled for NC, the next stop being in Swannanoa. The Memorial stands in Honor as a reminder of the great sacrifices made by both men and women during the Vietnam War. It was made for the purpose of helping people to heal and allowing people the opportunity to visit friends and loved ones in their home town who otherwise might not be able to make the trip to Washington, DC. There are 58,261 names of men and women engraved on the Memorial Wall. The mobile Memorial arrived in Kinston at Emma Webb Park on 9-13-11 escorted by several National Motorcycle groups including the Guardian Brotherhood, The Patriot Guard, Rolling Thunder, American Legion Riders, Nam Knights, Veterans Motorcycle club and many more. The wall was warmly welcomed by many people standing at attention and waving American Flags. The Wall was open 24 hours a day and remained on display through 9-18-11.

Lady D and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. James McClure, a Veteran of the Vietnam War, and Mr. Jerry Barnes, a Navy Veteran. As we approached them, they were both on bended knee in front of the wall pointing towards a name. Mr. McClure stated he was there looking for two of his fellow comrade’s names on the wall. With tears in his eyes, he began telling us the story of a fellow friend and comrade named Bobby Baker who was killed just a few days prior to being able to go home. Mr. McClure’s job was in transportation and he was scheduled to make a run on the next day. Bobby wanted to make the run, but due to orders, and it nearing Bobby’s time to go home, this wasn’t allowed. Bobby was determined to go on the run. After talking with their commanding officer, Bobby was allowed to do the run and James would attend to Bobby’s duties. On the next day, Bobby set out on his mission, but along the way, he ran over a land mine and was killed. Mr. McClure stated, “That was supposed to have been me!” “I know I was spared for some reason, but I do not know why.” He went on to tell how on the next day, he had to drive the same route, over the exact same place his friend had been killed. “The war went on,” he said. Mr. McClure stated, “I am glad I came to see the Memorial”. “I will probably never get to see the one in Washington, due to my health problems.” There were many stories told that day and many tears shed for friends, loved ones and fellow comrades. I will never forget those two gentlemen that we met on that drizzly day. They will always hold a special place in my heart. For some reason, Lady D and I were meant to meet those two Vets that day and hear their heart- felt stories.

The weekend of September 16-18 was joyous and sad for the Nash Co. Ghost Riders. The Club celebrated their 12th Anniversary; however, the celebration was not at the Clubs home. Due to a fire that burnt their Clubhouse down August 6th, this party took place at the Wilson Ghost Riders Clubhouse. Guests arrived by bikes, trucks, and cars; setting up tents, pop up trailers, and one or two Winnebago’s to help the Club celebrate 12 years. Some of these guests included: Ghost Riders (Wilson, Duplin, Wayne, Scotland, Edgecombe, Lenior and Martin Counties), Southern Riders (Harnett Co), Tuscarora, Freedom Riders, Leather & Lace, members from CBA, as well as, many independents and friends of the Ghost Riders Club. With guests rolling in all weekend, Matt Pittman lit the grill early Saturday morning and started the main course that at the end was some of the best pig I personally have ever tasted. The pig was pulled (not chopped) and placed in containers for the Clubs guests to enjoy with slaw, potatoes, macaroni salad, snaps, and devil’s food cake with chocolate rats as a decoration (those poor little rats didn’t stand a chance with this crowd).

After the meal, Steel Standing set up for an evening of some outstanding music, well into the night. If you didn’t want to stay inside with the music - White Boy (Edgecombe County GR) had set up in the Clubhouse to make your tattoo dreams come true (this guy does some really good work at reasonable prices). With the help of Wilson Co. Ghost Riders allowing Nash Co to use their Clubhouse, Ray Walston for donating the pig, Steel Standing, the great food, and awesome friends/guests, this Anniversary party was a really GREAT time. All chapters of the Ghost Riders attending piched in to help their brothers of Nash County out by supplying food or even helping out behind the bar. When you speak of BROTHERHOOD among Clubs the Ghost Riders pulled together to help their brothers in a time of need and celebration (this was brotherhood at it’s finest form). A lot of talk during the party was related to the fire and what the guys were planning to do – Nash County President, Dozier, said that they were looking for a new location to rebuild. This was a definite blow to the members of Nash County, but be assured they will rebuild and comeback better than before. The members of Nash County Ghost Riders wish to thank Wilson County Ghost Riders, Ray Walston, Steel Standing and all attending for their help, support, prayers and donations that helped make this Anniversary a success. To the Nash County Ghost Riders, I just want you to know I for one am looking forward to the announcement of the new Nash County Clubhouse opening and the party to kick it off.
