flHelping Hands Brotherhood as bikers r/c Fundraiser for claudine && katherine foss On August 25, 2012, Helping Hands Brotherhood As Bikers R/C had a fantastic fundraiser for Claudine Hendrick Foss and Katherine Foss at the Calvary Baptist Church in Warsaw, North Carolina. Ms. Claudine has an ongoing fight with Scoliosis, COPD, and other respiratory issues. Her precious daughter, Katherine, is in a fight with Lupus and three other auto-immune diseases. These illnesses have affected their ability to work and that has put a great financial strain on the family. Ms. Claudine has great talents! If you have been in the Warsaw area and looked at a Fire Truck, an EMS Truck, or a Law Enforcement vehicle in the last few years, the odds are that you have seen her excellent work! Ms. Claudine loves her community and in this Helping Hands fund raiser people were given the opportunity to love her back. Over $1,000 was raised for the Foss ladies and their family with the benefit and other donations made prior to the event. There was delicious, fork tender, grilled pork loin, green beans, seasoned potatoes, bread, homemade desserts, and beverages served. Oh, the food smelled so good going into the parking lot and tasted even better going down! The Helping Hands Brotherhood As Bikers R/C and friends know how to tend the grill!! There was a 50/50 drawing, door prizes and a drawing for a custom grill. The Pastor Scott Kennedy of the Calvary Baptist Church won the grill. Some of the Warsaw children provided excellent impromptu entertainment with country violin playing, singing, and just smiling at all who came in the door. They were a joy to listen to and watch. The talking and laughing enjoyed by the community and bikers was wonderful. Everyone worked together to help this family in need. What else can we say, Helping Hands Brotherhood As Bikers really gave a helping hand! HHFFHH

Give Kids The World “Give Kids the World” is a charitable organization that exists only to fulfill the wishes of all children with life-threatening illnesses. With their families, the children experience a cost-free week of laughter, serenity, and lifetime memories. Over 115,000 children have had their dream come true as the organization works towards never having to turn a child away. Though any day would be a good day to come out and raise money for children (and though the charity appreciates any and all support), September 15th proved to be a particularly great day. That day, a very successful fund raiser took place at Candlewood Suites’ - The 1st Annual Give Kids the World Poker Run and Block Party. “It all started in early 2012 when we were trying to decide how to make money for our charity and have fun doing it,” says Paula Schronce. “We thought we’d organize something small - but what happened was a full-blown poker run and block party! It was a challenging event because none of us had ever planned one before. Still thinking small, we started contacting vendors, but before we knew it we had a big event happening. We worried about people coming out, but a lot of people came. Now we’re in the planning stages of an even bigger and better event for next year!”

Paula Schronce would like to give a big “Thank You” to everyone who sponsored the event – Cape Fear Harley Davidson, Sweet Frog, Miller-Motte College, Rock 103, Hooters, and Itz, as well as all the vendors, volunteers, friends, family and supporters. With their combined efforts, the event was a huge success for the kids. Watch for the next “Give Kids the World” event next year. Paula would love everyone to come out and support the organization – and the kids.

your Health Behind Barz

When a physician says that you will need surgery, your jaw drops and the mind turns off. Both are very normal reactions to a stressful situation. It is necessary to become well informed about your condition and how surgery may help you obtain a more satisfactory outcome. There are a few questions you may want to ask your surgeon before surgery, If this is an emergency surgery you will not have time to ask all of these questions. Some questions to ask are: What surgery are you recommending? Why do I need this surgery? Are there alternatives to surgery? What are the risks of this surgery? How much pain will there be from the surgery and what are we going to do about it? What will happen if I choose not to have the surgery? Where can I go for a second opinion? What is your experience with this procedure? What will this procedure cost? Where will it be done? What kind of anesthesia will be used? How long will I need to stay in the hospital? How long will my recovery be? What and who can I bring to the hospital? Can my family stay with me in my room?

BARZ

These are not nosey questions, they are questions that we all have but are sometimes afraid to ask. Medical doctors encourage you to ask these questions so your mind can be at ease. If you feel uneasy asking these questions bring someone with you to an appointment who can ask these questions for you and help you remember the answers. Our God is a healing God, a miraculous God, and all knowing God. He decides weather to heal us instantly, or use his servants, doctors and nurses, on this earth to set the stage for his healing to take place. Next time we will discuss the safety tips for the day of surgery. Until then, Jehovah Jirah.

jacob’s run Written By: Lady D

al u ann

On September 15, 2012 Jacob’s Run started from nine, yes “9”, different starting points, in Eastern North Carolina. Would you believe Lenoir, Craven, Martin, Edgecombe, Wilson, Wayne, Pitt, Greene and Beaufort counties had bikers to participate! I am sure many other counties had participants but these are where the starting points were. Many different M/C, M/M and M/R joined in. The unity of the brotherhood of bikers to help the precious children at Vidant Children’s Hospital was evident. Jacob’s Run is held in loving memory of Jacob Allen Floars who lost his life 10-10-10 in an automobile accident. Jacob was a young man who loved to help children and ride motorcycles. In his memory his father and mother, Allen and Catherine Floars, started Jacob’s run with all the proceeds going to Vidant Children’s Hospital in Greenville. This is something they just know would just bring a smile to their late son’s face. There were days when Allen and Catherine could hardly function due to the loss of their precious son and they prayed and determined that something good would come out of this tragedy to help others. Hence, Jacob’s Run is a blessing and a help to children at Vidant Children’s Hospital by the bikers of Eastern North Carolina. The Floars’ raised money for Vidant Children’s Hospital because many families rely on them for children’s health care and they know that the money given will go to help the children who are admitted there.

This year over 400 bikes rode from the nine different starting points to Hometown Harley Davidson in Winterville. Here they gathered and had some good food, free door prizes, great entertainment and fellowship. Big Dog Karaoke did the DJ entertainment for the event. Hometown Harley Davidson was a very gracious host and a great help with Jacob’s Run. At 12 noon the group left with an escort to ride to First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro (1st PH), to enjoy even more special events. At 1st PH there was a Chili Cook-Off, Car Show, Drawings for 4 Captain Stacy Fishing passes, One Week Oceanfront Condo Stay at Windward Dunes,

50/50 drawing, door prize drawings….oh just loads of fun and prizes and great live music by Haywired. A representative from Vidant Children’s Hospital, Rhonda James, Event Coordinator, came to thank the bikers for all they did. Jacob’s run raised over $13,000 this year to help the children. The Kennedy Family came and shared the miracles, what has happened to them and all the help they received at Vidant Children’s Hospital. What a wonderful, encouraging experience they shared. The Country Time Tavern in Goldsboro, NC won the hand carved, custom plaque for the most participants. Over 70 people left from there alone! The Chili Cook-Off participants chili left a good taste in your mouth with each sample and when you put it over the hot dogs or sausage dogs available…mmmmmm good. Trophies and cash prizes were awarded for the Best Chili and the Best in the Car Show. It was hard to pick the best out of all the pots of chili that were entered. Yet, the Best Chili winner was Ms. Marti Jones. The Car Show drew many classic and custom vehicles. Buddy Head with his 1935 Chevy won the Best in Car show . Tim Fontaine won the 50/50 drawing and donated his winnings back to Vidant Children’s Hospital. Thank-you Mr. Fontaine!

We Ride d Rolling Thunder r i al h For Those Who Can’t Chapter 1 NC u t n an Remembrance Run On Saturday, September 1st Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC held their 3rd Annual “We Ride For Those Who Can’t Remembrance Run” at Hotrodz of Fayetteville. How did it go? I’m glad you asked! The day started early for chapter members who were put to work directing bikes to parking and setting up for the day’s activities. While registration wasn’t supposed to start until 9:00am…folks were showing up prior to that to get signed up. While only in its third year, this ride has grown in popularity and people want to be a part of it. We hold our Remembrance Ride each year to raise funds for The Ride Home. Rolling Thunder chapters join forces to host this event, held in Americus, Georgia over the POW-MIA Recognition Day weekend, to honor and pay tribute to our nation’s ex-Prisoners of War. Oftentimes held in deplorable conditions for months or even years, they survived due to their training, their faith, and a desire to return home to their families and country. We also take time to remember our nation’s missing…those yet to return home, and invite the family members of those MIAs to join us as well. As guests of Rolling Thunder, they incur no lodging expenses, are provided transportation to all events once there, and are treated to a Heroes Banquet in their honor. Since there are several ex-POWs who live in the Fayetteville area, we provide safe and comfortable transportation for them to and from the event as well.

Photos by: Dee ‘OneMore’ James Story by: Jim Hollister, President Rolling Thunder Inc. Chapter 1 NC

At 10:15am, even while bikes continued to arrive, we paused for a short ceremony. Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC vice president Barbra Corbett explained to the crowd on hand the mission of Rolling Thunder, which is to educate the public on the POW-MIA issue and to remind them, and our government, that there are still over 80,000 Americans who have yet to return home from all past wars. She went on to remember a member of the chapter who passed away recently in a motorcycle accident, Staff Sergeant Ben Pasley. Ben was very excited and looking forward to this year’s event, and I know every member of our chapter rode for him as well as our nation’s missing. That was followed by the raising of a new POW-MIA flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. When it was time to go, officers from the Fayetteville Police Department made sure the 200 plus bikes navigated through town safely. On down the road, the Sampson County Sheriff’s Department took over to lead the way. Coming back into Fayetteville, the FPD picked us up again and led us down Hay Street and to the North Carolina Veterans Park. Hearing the rumble of the bikes, and getting some insider information from our intrepid photographers, people came out of the shops to watch and wave.

We stopped at the NC Veterans Park for another ceremony… and there could be no better place than this beautiful park dedicated to our veterans. If you have not visited yet, you owe it to yourself to make the trip. One of the first orders of business was to introduce our special guests, dear friends of Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC and some of our biggest supporters:

www.behindbarz.com

Mr. Maurice Braswell, held as a POW during WWII Mr. John Mims, held as a POW during WWII and Bataan Death March Survivor. Mr. Jake Roth, held as a POW during the Korean War Mr. Bill Richardson, held as a POW during the Korean War Mr. Ray Schrump, held as a POW during the Vietnam War Mr. Rudy Hernandez, Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War The primary purpose of the ceremony was simple…to visually remind everyone of the more than 80,000 American servicemen still listed as missing and have yet to return home. Sadly, there are many who do not know that: From WWI – over 3,000 remain missing today From WWII – over 73,000 remain missing today From Korea – 7,959 remain missing today From Vietnam – 1,660 remain missing today From the Cold War – 125 remain missing today From Afghanistan – 1 remains missing today Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 NC members conducted the Missing Man Table Ceremony, which pays tribute to our nation’s missing and symbolizes that while they cannot be physically with us, they are always with us in spirit. The message is quite clear when you look at the table, the service caps placed on the plates, the glasses inverted, the chairs all empty. No one would be sitting at that table. And so, at the 3rd Annual “We Ride For Those Who Can’t Remembrance Run” the watchwords of Rolling Thunder – We Will Never Forget – were amplified and spoken in both action and word thanks to all of those in attendance…by the flags flying from their bikes…the stickers on everyone’s helmets…the shirts that they wore…and the rumble of their bikes. We must all take it upon ourselves to never forget those Americans whose fate remains unknown. For as long as we remember, they remain alive and with us in our hearts and in our memories…and as long as they remain alive within us, there is hope.

Volunteer of the Year

photo: Abby McCaskey

My grandma, Mary Roybal, received the Volunteer of the Year award on September 25, 2012. She was named Volunteer of the Year by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Grandma joined the RSVP in 1985 and has volunteered more than 7,500 hours over the past 27 years! My grandma has volunteered at the Minneluzahan Senior Center, VFW , area nursing homes, Rapid City Regional Hospital, Hospice of the Hills, S.D. National Guard, Cornerstone Rescue Mission and RSVP. This coming year my grandma will be 88 and I am proud to say that she does more in a day than most folks do in an entire week! Along with the volunteering mentioned above, she also volunteers a lot of her time at church. My grandma doesn’t let grass grow under her feet! She also has her usual daily routine of keeping her house in order, she tends her own garden, manicures her own yard and excercises daily! All this on top of all the hours she volunteers and she still finds time for her husband, 6 kids, 10 grandkids and 9 great grandkids! Yep, my grandma is an amazing woman! Doobie

Goldsboro hog 2nd annual military appreciation day On Sept. 8th, 2012, Goldsboro Hog Chapter held their annual Military Appreciation Day, Bike and Car show in Goldsboro, NC. This was a free event open to the public to show support for our troops and veterans. Hundreds of folks turned out for this event honoring our military guyz and galz. Live music was provided by Southern Impact and Project 581. Let me tell ya, those two bands sure knew how to rock the crowd. There was a BBQ cook off, featuring some of the best BBQ around, cooked by some of the top cooking teams in the state. There were lots of venders there to keep everyone’s change rolling out of their pockets. Some of the coolest cars, truck and bikes were on display for the Bike and Car show and for the competition. There sure were some awesome cars, trucks and bikes to look at. Goldsboro Hog Chapter would like to send out a special “thank you” to everyone that came out to show their support for our military. Hope to see everyone again next year for this annual event.

9th Annual Open House & Bike Show

What an AWESOME Open House at the Biker Barn in Pilot, N.C.! The weather could not have been more perfect and the bikes were there in droves! This was certainly the place to be on October 20th! Gary and The Crew really know how to treat their customers. Every year, gary has his Open House and everyone knows that Gary doesn’t put out any stops! The Open House is known for it’s killer, whopper pork chops! Cooked up by Bruce and his crew, they cooked all day long...folks came back for seconds and NOBODY left hungry! It was an all day feast! I have never seen so many pork chops!

Bruce and his team fed good eats to the masses! Folks line up for the smorgesboard of food! Home cooked vittles that would make any top chef shudder with excitement! There was even an entire table devoted to nothing but desserts. First thing we made sure of was to get some of Ms. Alma’s famous homemade nanner puddin’! It was the highlight of my day!

George loading up the grill. This went on all day long, one after another!

There were many door prizes given out all through the day, a 50/50 drawing and, at 3pm, the winners of the Bike Show were announced. Mark your calendars for next year...it’s always in October! The event of the year... Biker Barn Open House! Bike Show entries...you never know what ya might see!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Behind Barz!

honor & remember In the more than 200 years of our nation’s history, there has never been an officially recognized symbol that reminds us daily of the sacrifices made by members of our military who lost their lives in service to our country. Until now. The Honor and Remember organization has launched a national campaign to create an emblem with which every patriotic American can acknowledge daily the ultimate price of freedom. The Honor and Remember Flag recognizes all individuals who have died as a result of serving in the United States military, dating back to the founding of our nation. The flag serves as a symbol of national gratitude for the hundreds of thousands of American men and women who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the freedoms we enjoy. The flag also helps to promote healing for thousands of families that deserve recognition for the sacrifice of a lost loved one. It will be a nationally recognized reminder to all Americans of the value of each individual life given for our freedom.

family of Captain David “Seth” Mitchell

Our goal is for the flag to be congressionally and military sanctioned as a permanent symbol to fly continuously in eternal honor and remembrance of fallen military service men and women. Our mission is to encourage all Americans to fly this new emblem wherever our national flag is flown. An important objective is to place an Honor and Remember Flag in the hands of the immediate families who have lost someone in military serve to America. The North Carolina Chapter of Honor and Remember has been raising money and putting flags in the hands of these families for the last two years. The most resent presentation of these flags was in Four Oaks, NC at the American Legion Post 346. The families that were honored with personalized flags where: Steve and Connie Mitchell parents of Capitan David Seth Mitchell KIA October 29, 2009; Jim and Julie Webb parents of Lance Corporal Jeffery Stephen Webb killed in a training excuse September 21, 2007; James and Christina Kazakavage parents of Technical Sergeant Adam Kenneth Ginett KIA January 19, 2010; John and Tammy Eakes parents of Sergeant Lance Oliver Eakes KIA April 18, 2008; Lisa Davis mother of PFC Gillford E. Hurt KIA January 20, 2010.

The North Carolina Chapter is now planning its Second Annual Gold Star Banquet where we will be presenting five more personalized flags to five more families. If you would like more information you can email Kathy Moore at: ncchapter@honorandremember.org . Chef and the Farmer

The BB Taste Testing Crew stopped at Chef and the Farmer, 120 West Gordon Street, in Kinston, North Carolina recently. We were very happy sharing a meal with the wonderful people who served us.

Everything, from the bread to the ice cream, is made in house and all summer long Chef & the Farmer’s kitchen staff puts up preserves, pickles and jellies to be enjoyed all year long. They use pastured hormone and antibiotic free proteins. They also use locally grown products in the tasty food they prepare.

It was wonderful to watch the food being prepared in part of the restaurant. The cooks were so engrossed in each and every plate they made up with a very artistic flair. They were intent in giving the best to each customer who came in.

Our waitress, Susan, was so very informative and shared info about the meals, the ingredients used and how everything was made right there, in house. The Hand-Rolled Parpadelle and Chef & the Farmer Burgers were cooked with flavors that were exquisite and excellent. Susan also shared about the Hot, Sweet and Salty desert that was like a Snickers Bar on a steroid kick and, wow, it was great!

Richard, in the wine shop, was very informative and shared about the wines, beers and ales available. He is a very knowledgeable gentleman who answered all of our questions. They had quite a nice selection that compliments the menu.

Been There, S Helping

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

I went into retirement after my third IronButt ride, but I guess it’s more accurate to call it “semi-retirement.” As my friend, Kim Butler, said at the Miracle League Ride, “Retirement, my (buttocks).” I attended two events since my last article. I know that’s much less than what I normally do. The events I attended were “Give Kids the World” hosted by Candlewood Suites in Fayetteville and the “6th Annual Miracle League Ride.” I think this was my third or fourth year mingling with the athletes of the Miracle League. Paula Schronce asked me to attend the “Give Kids the World” event several months ago. I was feeling OK, so my driver decided to take me there to hang out. We didn’t participate in the ride because there were lots of activities available while the bikers were out riding. I met lots of new friends and let some of them mount my driver’s seat of my Harley for photos with me. The smiles from the children and their parents were worth it. The kids were great in not touching all the buttons and switches and my bike. We can handle sticky finger smudges on the gas tank, and sometimes I’ll lick hands and fingers before they mount my Harley. Lots and lots of gift packages were raffled and there were lots of organizations there, such as Sweet Frog, Mac’s Speed Shop (their BBQ was pawbulous!), Jump Around (inflatable stuff), Fire Antz (I think they’re a hockey team), my friend Jeremy Baker, and more. We were at the event for about four hours mingling, rubbing with old friends, and meeting new friends. According to their website, Give Kids The World is a non-profit organization that fulfills the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to have a memorable, cost-free visit to attractions in Central Florida and Give Kids The World Village.

30

One of the many smiling faces at the “Give Kids the World” event! After Give Kids the World, my driver and I took the long way home through Broadway, then riding Buckhorn Road before hopping onto NC 42 for our ride home. When my driver and I need a short relaxing ride, we ride Buckhorn Road and NC 42. This loop is about an hour ride for us when we start from our house, so it’s pawfect for a short, relaxing ride.

Snuggling with Dee, a Behind Barz photographer, at the “Give Kids the World” event. We continue to fly two flags on my Harley: a Christian Flag in memory of Ed “Tail Gunner” Williams and a POW flag for Bowe Bergdahl, Sergeant, US Army. We’ll fly the Christian Flag for a while longer, then give it to Cindy and her furchild, Gunner. We intend to fly the POW flag until SGT Bergdahl returns home, which was Bob Bergdahl’s request when we met him at Rolling Thunder in Washington DC over Memorial Day weekend.

CHEWY The Biker Dog: w

Sniffed That

g Kids She was already my Facebook friend, and we met for the 1st time at Give Kids the World.

My driver and I have an idea for another Ride Across the USA in 2013, which is to ride with the flag to SGT Bergdahl’s home town in Idaho. This is just an idea, and like my previous rides across the USA, we won’t know if we’re going until we get closer to summer. If sponsors help us, it makes the trip a little more certain. We already barked it over with my wingman, Thomas “G.E.” Sanders, and he’s game! On my last ride across the USA, GE’s bike broke down before the ride and he had a new trike on order and wasn’t able to go. We thought about shifting our dates a month, but my driver was concerned about the desert temperatures and also wanted to end the ride at Rolling Thunder on Memorial Day weekend. Things happen for a reason, and we were blessed to meet and ride with Tom “TwoTone” Lystrup from Missouri to Washington DC. He helped pushed my Harley out of the mud in Virginia when my driver got my Harley stuck.

Miracle League Ride. On October 6, we attended the 6th Annual Miracle League Ride, which was planned and led by No Rules Riders. Allison Shackleford and Kim Butler introduced me to this event about three or four years ago. Lots of kids love motorcycles, and lots of kids love dogs. A dog on a motorcycle becomes a rock star to some of the kids and their parents. I’m gentle around kids and some just hug me because I’m soft like a teddy bear. It brings the kids and their families a moment of joy or a brief smile to faces. Life is tough – tougher for some than for others. These kids and their parents have the courage to face every challenge and overcome them. We admire their strength and courage! Wake County Sheriff Deputies and Cary Police Department ensured we arrived safely at the ball field near Cary Towne Center. My nose found the burger and hot dog stand, but my driver told me to sniff in another direction. Once we knew our pipes were cool, we let some of the kids mount my Harley for pictures.

Why isn’t anyone dealing me in?

According to the Miracle League website, there are 250 Miracle League organizations across the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Australia. The Miracle League serves more than 200,000 children with disabilities worldwide. As of 2012, the program in Cary, NC is operating at maximum capacity, with 320 players on 22 teams per season and approximately 4,000 volunteer opportunities per year.

Miracle League pre-staging.

I haven’t done much since retiring, other than take my driver for a walk every morning, follow my mom around the house while I wait for him to come home every day, then play Frisbee and spend time with him. Retirement is boring! My family and I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas – and watch for the deer! Tongue in the Wind! Chewy

RAV Rumble Motorcycle Cruise Did you miss it? September 23rd was a pleasant sunny day and a great time at the inaugural RAV Rumble Motorcycle Cruise, benefitting the homeless shelter programs at Third Street Alliance for Women and Children (Easton) and Victory House of Lehigh Valley for men and veterans (Bethlehem.) Nearly 50 bikes participated this first year, enjoying a 40mile round trip ride from beautiful Tuskes Park, weaving through areas of Bath Borough and the scenic townships of Lehigh, Moore and Bushkill, and ending back in Nazareth. Carrabba’s of Easton provided everyone with a delicious spread of Italian food, and a special raffle prize boasted a one-week’s stay in a villa at Ski Side Village in the Poconos. The Lehigh Valley Rollergirls mingled with riders and rolled through the parking lot making new friends, and the KITT replica car from the Knight Rider TV show “talked” to visitors and cruise with the bikes. DJ Jerry D entertained the crowd with great tunes, and the opening ceremonies were complimented by the national anthem sung by Lehigh Saegerbund and impressive honor guard presented by the American Legion Brown and Lynch Post 9 of Palmer. Event T-shirts are still available for $10 each – (sample attached, on gray shirt). Contact me if you’re interested in purchasing a shirt by mail, or stop by Third Street Alliance during business hours. Many thanks to all of our volunteers! Big Smo & Little Texas

Whiskey Dick’s Summer Concert Series Continued Featuring Big Smo and Little Texas Do you know what you get when you combine friends, ice cold beer or a mixed beverage and an out of this world rockin’ band, down by the river front? You have one “KICKAZZ” party at Whiskey Dick’s.

Some of the Behind Barz Crew got a chance to attend two of the most Rockin’ Concerts held in the Wayne County area, at one of the Hottest Bars in NC, Whiskey Dick’s in Goldsboro, NC.

Big Smo and his Krew!

On Sept. 8th, Big Smo, Tennessee’s number one Kuntry Boy, rocked the stage with his down home, backwoods, country hip-hop sound, that can’t be matched by anyone. As the saying goes, if Kid Rock and Run DMC had a love child on the set of Hee Haw, it would be named Big Smo. His music is a mixture of authentic, good ol’ boy, bed rock imagery. If you listen carefully to the lyrics of his songs, he speaks of his own life experiences. Look out world, this man cannot be stopped.

Little Texas

Opening up for Big Smo, was the female-fronted guitar rock band, Viva la Venus from NC . These girls tore the stage up with there powerfully, seductive, vocal melodies and intricate guitar leads. Nothing like some sexy girls rocking it on stage. Sept. 28th, America’s favorite Rockin’ Country band, Little Texas hit the stage at WD’s. Celebrating their 21st year since their first single was played on the radio, Little Texas continues to put on an “AWESOME” performance singing classic songs like, God Bless Texas and What Might Have Been, and Rockin’ the stage with some of their new songs like, Hot In Texas and Take This Walk With Me.

Viva La Venus

Chillin Dixie

Opening for Little Texas was the NC based country band, Chillin Dixie. Their energetic style of playing Country Music captures the audience and keeps the dance floor full. Their performance is a “Can’t Miss”. If you are in the Goldsboro area, stop by Whiskey Dick’s and grab you a cold one and sit out by the river and take a load off your feet and just chill for awhile. Nothing like some good ol’ country relaxation.

Southern sin m/c

dickie wells mem. ride 32nd annual In their lifes they were bikers to the core and they had a vision of what a biker should be. They lived the dream so many of us only dream of and to many they were bigger than life, both in life and in death they are still remembered. Although they are no longer with us they still ride with us in our hearts and mind which will always keep them alive. On September 15th the friends and family of Richard ‘Dickie’ Wells and Thomas ‘Tom’ Smith came together for the Annual Dickie Wells Memorial Ride to honor 2 of the founders of Southern Sin MC. The ride started at 2:30pm and headed to the final resting place of Dickie Wells. Dickie as he was known was killed tragically in a freak accident while riding down the road. He had a vision of life as a biker and lived that vision till the end. Well liked by all that knew him, Dickie was an inspiration to all that knew him. Members told stories of Dickie at the gravesite and remembered his love of the Club. As a founding member of Southern Sin, he was respected by all that came into contact with him and liked for his straight forwardness of his vision for the Club. Another former member, Tommy Batchelor, was also mentioned while at the cemetery. It rests a short distance from Dickie. After saddling back up, the column of bikes headed to the Smith Homestead to pay their respects to founding member and close friend to all, Tom Smith. Tom, who passed away from cancer, was known for his love of the Club, pictures with the ladies, strong brotherhood amongst the surrounding Clubs, and never meeting a stranger. Tom fought the battle with cancer to the end with the kind of determination he tackled all obstacles: full force. Tom loved to ride, loved the Club, family, and friends right to the end. Finding the right words to describe Tom is extremely hard but can be summed up in one word…BROTHER. For whether you rode or didn’t ride he was like a brother to all. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and the last dollar in his pocket if he had it. After saying a few words from participants in the ride the riders cranked up and headed back to the Clubhouse where Lester had been busy cooking up chickens for the growing crowd. The party that followed was truly a party that all fallen members would have approved off. The Southern Sin members and their ladies served up some great side dishes with some really delicious desserts that would tempt anybodies taste buds. As the night went on more and more guests showed up including members from: Brotherhood MC, Tuscarora MC, Ghost Riders MC (Edgecombe and Lenoir Counties), Dixie Steel MC, Veterans, and CBA (Concerned Bikers Association); with many independents that knew and loved Dickie, Tommy, and Tom.

story & photos: Johnny King

As dark began to fall Steel Standing took the stage to rock the crowd into the night and to regenerate the crowd that had come out. The band took the time in their playing to remember one of their own Cliff ‘Stonewall’ Jackson who was not only a biker and singer; he was also a good friend of the Club. The members of Southern Sin wish to thank all that came out to help make this Memorial a memberable one to their fallen brothers. A great ride, good food, awesome music, and fantastic brotherhood was shown to all that attended. You guys Rock!! For those that are no longer with us, remembering keeps them alive in our hearts and memories. But rest assured they are not far from us for they ride along beside us every time we saddle up. So ride free Dickie, Tommy, and Tom for we will ride together again one day on the streets of gold. You remain in our hearts and memories and although not here in person your spirits, dreams, and essence follow us in our daily lives keeping us safe from harm.

RIP Dickie Wells Tommy Batchelor Tom Smith

Live to Ride, Ride to Eat

Recipes from the Leather & Lace MC Sisterhood Story & photos: Doobie

What a well thought out and put together cookbook! The Leather & Lace Motorcycle Sisterhood compiled this cookbook with some of their all time favorite recipes. This book is a top quality, hard back and it is packed full of recipes - from appetizers and beverages to main dishes, breads, deserts and everything in between! There are even pages devoted to helpful hints, equivalents, herbs & spices, slow cooker tips, a roasting chart and the list goes on and on! Like I said, this was a well thought out cookbook! It is easy to read and the pages are held by a very sturdy three ringed spine. Leather & Lace MC was founded in 1983. Their main objective was to bring women together who have a serious interest in motorcycling and in making a difference in the lives of others. “Leather” stands for the inner strength that they posses as women, and the physical strength that they demonstrate in handling their machines. “Lace” stands for the femininity, an intimate and important part of all women. If you would like to order your very own, “Live to Ride, Ride to Eat” cookbook, you can contact: Lace Estates, Inc. PO Box 729 Edgewater, Fl. 32132 or go to: www.leatherandlacemc.com The books are $20 each and $5 for shipping and handling.

Many thanks Leather & Lace MC for my copy of “ Live to Ride, Ride to Eat I have enjoyed it immensely! 42
