First of all I want to thank you for the countless emails and phone calls we received by the launch of our printed newspaper. For our team is a pleasure to continue writing community issues and be in hand for all of you. One factor that we stick to in this service, is being able to help you can with any doubt, problem or simply recreate them with our context. The strength of the progress makes us create new horizons, so I dedicate this editorial to those who are going through a difficult situation, remember to never give up hope, focus on the positive and believe in yourselves. The theme of this second edition is, of course, the 4th of July. Here you will find information about the celebrations that will take place in Doral and neighboring places, and as each of us, we make this day unique and a special date. This country is simply wonderful and every day it gives us more and more opportunities ... and we need to learn how to take advantage of them. Some of these opportunities are reflected in the young residents of Doral, between the ages of 15 and 20, who in their short career, are gaining more attention and sharing their experiences with us, infecting everyone with their enthusiasm and leaving their mark. I hope you enjoy all of the articles and share them with your family and friends.

antes que nada quiero agradecerles la infinidad de emails y llamadas que hemos recibido por el lanzamiento de nuestro periódico impreso. Para nuestro equipo es un placer seguir escribiendo temas de la comunidad y estar en la mano de todos ustedes. Uno de los factores que nos apega a este servicio, es poder ayudarlos en cualquier duda, problema o simplemente el recrearlos con nuestro contexto. La fortaleza del progreso hace crear nuevos horizontes, por lo que dedico este editorial a aquellas personas que se encuentren en una situación difícil, recuerden nunca pierdan las esperanzas, concéntrense en lo positivo y crean en si mismos. El tema de esta segunda edición es, por supuesto, el 4 de Julio. Aquí encontrarán información sobre las celebraciones en Doral y lugares vecinos, y como cada uno de nosotros, hacemos de esta fecha algo particular y especial. Este país es simplemente maravilloso y cada día nos da más y más oportunidades… y hay que saber aprovecharlas. Parte de esas oportunidades se ven reflejadas en los jóvenes residentes de Doral, entre 15 y 20 años, que en su corta trayectoria, están dando que hablar y que compartieron sus experiencias con nosotros, contagiándonos a todos con su entusiasmo y dejando su huella. Doral Soccer Club will continue to manage the football program at Morgan Levy Park By Dominique Barba

or those of us whose roots lie in Latin America or Europe, it is well known to us that soccer is the number one sport in the world. This is largely due to the fact that it can be played anywhere, with anything, barefoot, in the beach, in the park, in the street, with a leather ball, or with anything the somewhat resembles a ball. Goalposts can be made with virtually anything, and you can play with as many people as you want. If we talk about professional soccer, it is a professional sport and the possibility to succeed in a very competitive society. In the United States, in contrary to the rest of the world, soccer does not play that big of a role, except in women, who have been consistently successful in the world stage. Either way, like any other sport, it does find a way to reach out to the youth, as something fun and healthy, and even as a way to obtain scholarships or work. City of Doral is no stranger to this sport and what it stands for, a multi-million dollar investment was made for the Morgan Levy park, creating soccer facilities that are the pride of our city. From the start, the soccer program was managed by the Doral Soccer Club, owned by Marcelo Landau and Beymar Piraquive and even though they have faced several problems, the club has achieved important goals. As the contract came to an end, many new faces came in for the opportunity to manage the soccer program, which would be done through a recommendation made by the Parks and Recreation department. On Wednesday June 8th, in the City Hall, the

recommendation was made, giving way to key clarifications and a new motion: the program administration was given to Doral Soccer Club under new regulations. The debate began after giving some time for residents to share their views on the issue. The first to speak was Councilman Cabrera, who even though was supportive to the Park and Recreation Department’s decision, was worried about the annual income received by Doral Soccer. Specially if the organization is listed as a non profit, to whom the City of Doral was lending its facilities for the benefit of the residents, something that should be respected. Mayor Juan Bermudez also had some words on the issue, recognizing Doral Soccer for its loyalty and quality of work, but also shared Mr. Cabrera’s views on the necessity of this transparency. He also mentioned that given the demand, other organizations should work alongside Doral Soccer Club. Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez was concerned about the number of children who even

though have facilities in Doral, have to leave town to attend other clubs for various reasons, many of them economic. Vice Mayor Mike Di Prieto, also insisted that they owe it to the residents to fight for their interests above all and that the he value Doral Soccer’s work and that given the necessary modifications, this resolution was a very positive one. Finally, Councilman Boria made the motion of providing the administration of the soccer program to Doral Soccer Club, provided certain parts of the contract were rectified. Mayor Bermudez indicated that Doral Soccer had always been transparent and complied to deliver all the requested documentation; the new regulations will improve the soccer program. Luego de escuchar los puntos de vista de algunos residentes, comenzó el debate. El primero en hablar fue el Concejal Pete Cabrera, quién explicó que si bien apoyaba la decisión del Departamento de Parques y Recreación, le preocupaba los ingresos que Doral Soccer devengaba cada año. Y es que tratándose de una organización sin fines de lucro a la cual la ciudad le prestaba las instalaciones sin costo, era preocupante que la naturaleza de esta negociación, y que es el beneficio absoluto de los niños residentes, no se respetara. Por su lado, el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez también tuvo palabras de re-

conocimiento para Doral Soccer Club, por la lealtad y trabajo realizado, coincidió con el Concejal Cabrera acerca de la necesidad de una transparencia en cuanto a los ingresos y gastos del club. Además, aclaró que dada la demanda de la ciudad, otros proveedores debían participar conjuntamente con Doral Soccer Club. La Concejal Ana Maria Rodríguez se mostró preocupada por la cantidad de niños que teniendo instalaciones en el Doral, tienen que salir de la ciudad para asistir a otros clubes por motivos diversos, muchos de ellos económicos. El Vice Alcalde, Mike Di Pietro, al igual que sus colegas, insistió que como representantes de la ciudad le deben lealtad a los residentes y tienen que velar por sus intereses por encima de todo. También dijo que valoraba el trabajo de Doral Soccer Club y esta nueva solicitud de mas documentación y ajustes en el contrato le parecía muy positiva. Finalmente, el Concejal Boria hizo la moción de otorgar a Doral Soccer Club la administración del programa de fútbol siempre y cuando, se rectifiquen ciertos puntos del contrato. El Alcalde Bermudez señaló que desde un principio la entidad en referencia había sido transparente y había cumplido con entregar toda documentación solicitada, las nuevas regulaciones mejorarán el programa de fútbol. ara los que crecimos en América Latina o Europa podemos entender bien cuando se nos habla de un deporte rey, el fútbol es sin duda el más popular y con mayor número de seguidores. Esto principalmente por un motivo, se puede jugar donde sea y con lo que sea, descalzos, en una playa, en un parque, con una pelota de cuero o tela, cualquier objeto redondo puede fungir como balón, dos palos o piedras pueden hacer de arco, y no hay límite en el número de jugadores . Si hablamos de fútbol profesional, estamos hablando de una carrera y de una posibilidad grande de salir adelante en una sociedad muy competitiva. En Estados Unidos, paradójicamente el fútbol no tiene la trascendencia de otros deportes (aunque las mujeres son campeonas mundiales). Sin embargo, como el resto de deportes, tiene un gran significado para la juventud: además de ser una forma de entretenimiento saludable es un vínculo directo a la posibilidad de conseguir becas universitarias o trabajo... La Ciudad del Doral no estaba ajena a estos fundamentos, y con una inversión millonaria en el parque Morgan Levy se construyeron hermosas instalaciones que son el orgullo de la ciudad y el apetecible sueño de toda academia de fútbol. Desde un principio el programa de soccer fue administrado por la Academia Doral Soccer Club que pertenece a Marcelo Landau y Beimar Piraquive; pese a muchos problemas, los logros de esta academia han sido importantes. Al llegar a fin, los términos del contrato, nuevas voces pidieron la oportunidad de administrar el programa y fue el Departamento de Parques y Recrea-

hey are the four most popular sports in the United States: Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. For the Caribbean nations, Baseball is the undisputed king of the land. This sport has a very important place in Doral, through the Doral Little League, it has seen great growth over the years. Lots of winning, lots of tittles, but also some trouble. For this reason, a complaint (LRFP #2011-15) is being filled to the City of Doral Parks and Recreation Department. Several residents have expressed their points of view, and another club, Falcon Baseball Club, has even offered to take over as well as provide their insight. As for the council, they are obliged to make it clear that the work they did placed gave them the responsibility to supervise, but not organize, and that they should understand that the nature and purpose of it is to provide residents with a healthy and fair competitive environment at all times. Once again, it was made clear of how important was the volunteer work done by parents, and that above all, the work must be honest and tailored to benefit the kids, free of temptation and other interests. With 4 votes for and 1 against, the resolution of denying the Parks and Recreation Department, the right to administer the Recreational Youth Baseball Program.

n Estados Unidos son 4 los deportes de equipo mas populares: American Football, Basketball, Beisbol y Hockey sobre hielo. En los países del Caribe, el Béisbol reina indiscutiblemente. En el Doral, este deporte tiene lugar muy importante ya que por años y a través de Doral Little League, el baseball ha tenido un desarrollo bastante grande. Muchos éxitos, muchos logros pero también problemas hicieron que se solicitara (LRFP #2011-15) al Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Ciudad del Doral que asumiera los aspectos administrativos del Programa de Doral Little League. Varios residentes expresaron sus puntos de vista al respecto… Otro Club: Falcon Baseball Club, ofreció sus servicios e importantes activistas manifestaron sus opiniones. Por parte del Consejo, era menester aclarar que la labor que realizaban los colocaba en posición de ente vigilante y no organizador, que entendían la naturaleza de ofrecer a los residentes un deporte sano y competitivo en un ambiente propicio y que debían velar para que ello se cumpliera. Nuevamente se insistió en la labor de los padres voluntarios y en la importancia de hacer un trabajo honesto, que solo beneficie a los niños, sin agendas escondidas y sin lucro. Con 4 votos a favor y uno en contra , se aprobó la Resolución que rechazaba asignar la administración del “Recreacional Youth Baseball Program” al Departamento de Parques y Recreación.

eing a parent in today’s world isn’t easy. Many parents begin to teach their children from a very young age about making healthy choices. It’s never been more important to do this especially in light of the immense amount of alcohol and other drugs that are available for our children, teens and adolescents. There’s so much to say about this issue, but research now proves unequivocally that parents are the #1 influence in their children’s lives. Therefore, if we teach our children to chose between healthy from unhealthy behaviors, empower them to make these choices, then the mere fact that they know that we their parents disapprove of underage drinking and other drug use, the less likely they are to try it or when they try it they’ll be older. Why is age important? It’s important because research also underscores that the older a child is when they experiment for the first time, the chances diminish greatly that they will develop a lifelong addiction. For example, is a 13 year old is introduced to alcohol at home (which is more often that not where this happens) and they like it, their age of onset alone means they have an 80% chance of becoming addicted to a substance at some point in their lives. However, if a child tries alcohol or another drug at 20 years old, there’s a 4% chance that they’ll have any sort of lifelong addiction. There are many different ways parents view alcohol and other drug use by their children and teens. However, research is research. For example, did you know that an adolescent’s brain doesn’t develop fully until age 23 to 25? That means when alcohol or another drug is introduced into the adolescent’s brain at an early age, the development of the brain is skewed. All of this takes place in the frontal lobe of the brain where emotions and important cognitive development takes place. If we, the parents, do not talk to them and aren’t the point of truthful reference for them, then their peers and friends will be. What to do? Get informed. Just like children do not come to us with a manual for raising them, but we try to get informed and educated, it’s imperative that we are educated on drugs. Otherwise, how can we talk about something we know so little about? There are also many many people in South Florida working on the front lines of this issue. On Tuesday, June 7, a South Florida Media Leaders Luncheon was held where over 125 people from all walks of our community attended. This event was a show of gratitude for the coverage and news stories and dedication our local media gives these issues. They, the media, are partners in this effort because they know how prevalent drug use is among our kids. Some of the media partners include: Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, CBS 4, Univision 23, WSVN 7, Clear Channel Radio/Total Traffic Network, Health News Florida, WTVJ NBC 6 and many others. Doral family Journal was there, also to participate in this event. Their importance in raising the level of awareness community-wide, is critical and they have stepped up to the plate and continue to cover these issues creatively and continuously so we the parents are reminded to pay attention to this! The keynote speaker of the event was Carlos J. Martinez, the Public Defender for the 11th Circuit. This is one man whose office of over 400 employees sees first hand the consequences of underage drinking and other drug use among our

children. It starts off with just a drink at home with mom and dad and what happens when they like it? They know we their parents aren’t going to allow them to drink more than a little, but they’ll find a way to get it (maybe at a friend’s house). It’s going to lose it’s excitement after a while and then they’ll try something new. And so goes the story. Too often they end up committing crimes to support the habit. That’s when Carlos Martinez’s office meets them in jail. The cycle is the same everywhere. The event was hosted by the South Florida Coalition Alliance.

Nunca ha sido más importante para hacerlo, especialmente a la luz de la inmensa cantidad de alcohol y otras drogas que están disponibles para nuestros niños, y adolescentes. Hay tanto que decir sobre este tema, pero la investigación ahora demuestra inequívocamente que los padres son la influencia # 1 en las vidas de sus hijos. Por lo tanto, si enseñamos a nuestros hijos a elegir entre la salud de comportamientos poco saludables, darles la posibilidad de tomar esas decisiones, entonces el mero hecho de que ellos saben que sus padres desaprueban el consumo de alcohol y otras drogas, menos probabilidades hay de que se trate o cuando se trate van a ser mayores. ¿Por qué es importante la edad? Es importante porque la investigación también pone de relieve que la edad de un niño cuando experimentan por primera vez es critica. raduation day is anticipated by both college and high school graduates alike. Calendars are marked, parties are attended and caps and gowns are worn, but when the glitter wears away students are found asking themselves “What now?” This question first appears to you straight out of high school just as you pack your bags and get ready to leave home. “A lot of students have a hard time leaving behind everything they’ve worked for in the past four years. You leave home hoping that you succeed in college”, says Frances Suarez, a recent high school graduate from Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High. “Leaving high school is easy, leaving college…that’s the hard part”, says Cristina Abreu, a Ronald Reagan graduate who currently attends Manhattanville college in New York. High school graduation is really just a test run, you still have a home to go back to and you are living in a community with other students facing the same issues but in the blink of an eye graduation is here again, and this time there’s no turning back. Graduating from college forces you to either sink or swim. A lucky few will graduate college with career opportunities awaiting them but for most it’s time to step out into the real world and accept the challenge it brings. “If I could say one thing to anyone college graduate it’s that don’t take any opportunity for granted. Your first job is not going to be as CEO of a company, chances are you’ll probably end up making coffee runs, and picking up other people’s laundry at minimum wage befote you actually get to where you want to be”, says Brian Bustillo, an FIU graduate who now teaches science in Dr. Rolando Espinoza K-8 Center. “It takes patience and perseverance so if you really want to succeed, all I can say is try and try again”, says Bustillo. For all of those graduates out there, as you say your goodbyes and wonder what the future holds for you remember, anything worth having is worth fighting for.

l día de graduación se prevé por tanto estudiantes de la universidad y de secundaria por igual. Los calendarios son marcados, fiestas son organizadas, … togas y birretes son usados, pero cuando el brillo se desgasta los estudiantes se encuentran preguntándose “¿Y ahora qué?” Esta pregunta aparece por primera vez, directamente después de la graduación de la escuela secundaria cuando los estudiantes están alistando sus maletas y preparándose para salir de casa. “Muchos estudiantes tienen dificultad dejando atrás todo lo que han hecho en los últimos cuatro años. Sales de casa con las esperanza de ser exitoso en la universidad”, dice Francisco Suárez, recién graduado de la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan / Doral Senior High School. “Despedirte de la escuela secundaria es fácil, despedirte de la universidad...esa es la parte difícil”, dice Cristina Abreu, quien se graduó de Ronald Reagan, y actualmente asiste a la universidad Manhattanville en Nueva York. La graduación de la escuela es en realidad una prueba, todavía tienes una casa para volver y vives en una comunidad con otros estudiantes que enfrentan los mismos problemas pero sin darte cuenta, la graduación esta aquí otra vez, y ya no hay vuelta atrás. Graduarse de la universidad obliga a que te ahogues o nades. Unos pocos afortunados se graduarán con oportunidades de trabajo, pero para la mayoría es el momento de salir al mundo y aceptar el desafío que trae. “Si yo pudiera decirle una cosa a cualquier estudiante de universidad es que no tomen ninguna oportunidad por sentado. Su primer trabajo no va a ser CEO de una empresa, es probable que vas a terminar haciendo café, y recogiendo ropa de otras personas con un salario mínimo antes de que realmente llegues a donde quieres estar “ dice Brian Bustillo, un graduado de FIU y que ahora enseña ciencias en Dr. Rolando Espinoza K-8 Center. “Se necesita paciencia y perseverancia y si realmente quieres tener éxito, todo lo que puedo decir es que tienes que intentarlo una y otra vez”, dice Bustillo. lejandro Moreno, a 17 year old who through his charisma and perseverance has become a prominent member of community. Moreno said his concern for the wellbeing of the community began when he was in elementary school and was invited to attend a Boy Scout meeting at John I Smith Elementary School. Since then he became an active member of Troop 552 and discovered his passion for scouting. The biggest lesson scouting has taught him is that “We all depend on one another and that we should always seek to do our best to help others”. Since then he has participated in perhaps all community events, from preparing breakfast for children of the Ronald McDonald House Charity to sing carols to the elderly. He became very concerned about being part of Student Government at his school and organizations such as Youth Commission. Thanks to the dedication and compromise that Alejandro has shown in Miami Dade, he was invited to join a club for young conservative teenagers in Miami Dade. Excited by the idea, he attended the meeting in which he decided to run for office and was elected Chairman of MiamiDade County Teenage Republicans. Moreno said that this organization, “opened up my eyes a lot to the world of politics, I’ve learned much during the past year.” Moreno was also contacted by the School Board of Miami-Dade, and was named “Youth Commissioner”, a very prestigious title given to only a selected group of students in the county. In fact, the youth commission had their first televised meeting in which they discussed the most common problems facing young people: Bullying, abuse of substances and breaking barriers. During the meeting, Alejandro showed great initiative and concern about the issues; he proposed solutions and strengthened the arguments of his colleagues with personal examples. Alejandro plans to enroll college the fall of 2012 and study journalism and political science before entering law school. In the future Alejandro aims to obtain a public office and this is the main motivation to achieve their goals.

Gracias a la gran dedicación y compromiso que Alejandro ha demostrado en Miami Dade, fue contactado para formar parte de un club para jóvenes conservadores en Miami Dade. Entusiasmado por la idea, asistió a la reunión donde decidió postularse para un cargo oficial y fue elegido Presidente de Miami- Dade County Teenage Republicans. “Esta organización me abrió los ojos al mundo de la política y he aprendido mucho durante el último año”, dice Moreno. Fue contactado por la junta Escolar de Miami-Dade, y nominado “Youth Commisioner”, un cargo muy prestigioso otorgado solamente a un grupo selecto de estudiantes del condado. Tuvo su primera reunión televisada en la cual se discutió los problemas más frecuentes a los que se enfrentan los jóvenes: La intimidación, el abuso de substancias no permitidas y rompiendo barreras. Durante la reunión, Alejandro demostró gran iniciativa y preocupación acerca de los temas, propuso soluciones y fortaleció los argumentos de sus colegas con ejemplos personales. Alejandro planea estudiar Periodismo y Ciencias Políticas antes de entrar a la Escuela de Leyes. En el futuro, Alejandro aspira obtener un cargo público y esta es la motivación principal para cumplir con sus metas.

abitha Spencer una joven de secundaria de 17 años quien ha demostrado tener las cualidades de liderazgo y filantropía dignas de admiración. A su corta edad es la capitana de equipo y miembro del comité organizador del “Relay for Life” evento anual de la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer. Esta fundación sin ánimo de lucro se encarga de recoger fondos para la lucha contra el cáncer. Como miembro y líder de esta organización ha recogido aproximadamente 8 a 12 mil dólares anuales para combatir esta enfermedad desde el inicio de este evento en Doral en el 2002. Spencer comenta que su dedicación y compromiso por esta fundación empezaron debido a la preocupación de lideres de la comunidad sobre la importancia de luchar por una buena causa aun antes de que la ciudad del Doral se incorporara como tal. Sin embargo, Spencer comenta que su mayor motivación se debe a que ha estado expuesta a las atrocidades de esta enfermedad durante la mayor parte de su vida. Sus abuelos, su padre y ahora su madre han enfrentado los estragos del cáncer. Es debido a estas experiencias que ella ha tenido la motivación para hacer todo lo posible por lograr la erradicación de esta enfermedad siendo no solo activa en la recaudación de fondos para la investigación de la cura, sino también abogando a nivel estatal y nacional para que se adjudiquen fondos para esta causa. Además de su liderazgo, Spencer es miembro activa de la comunidad. dedica sus domingos a ser voluntaria en el Jackson Memorial Hospital y participa en todas las actividades de la ciudad del Doral. Spencer también tiene cargos de tesorera en múltiples organizaciones de su escuela, como el Periódico “The Reagan Advocate” y la organización “FCCLA.” Allí también ha logrado dejar una huella, ya que ha recogido mas de 8,000 mil dólares para estas organizaciones.

At her young age she is the captain and member of the committee for the nonprofit foundation “Relay for Life” which is dedicated to fundraising for the fight against cancer. As a member and leader of this organization she has collected approximately 8 to 12 thousand dollars annually to combat the disease, since the start of this event at Doral in 2002. Spencer mentioned her dedication and commitment to the foundation started because of concerns of community leaders about the importance of fighting for a good cause. However, Spencer said that her biggest motivation was her frequent exposure to the atrocities of this disease for most of her life. His grandparents, his father and now her mother have faced the ravages of cancer. It is because of these experiences that she has had the incentive to do everything possible to achieve eradication of this disease. In addition to her leadership, Spencer is an active member of the community. She devotes her Sundays to volunteering at the Jackson Memorial Hospital and willingly participates in all activities of the city of Doral. Spencer also holds multiple positions as treasurer in her school, like the newspaper “The Reagan Advocate” and FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America). There she has also been able to leave a mark, and it has gathered about eight thousand dollars for these organizations. Tabitha ensured that service to her community is such an essential part of her life; it is difficult to imagine a daily routine without it.

osé Carlos Albizu a young passionate for Jazz. He began his career as a musician over five years ago in Cuba, he is now 15 years old and excels in his art. He belongs to the: Symphony Orchestra, Camerata, Jazz Band and Jazz Combo at the New World School of the Arts, and the International School of Music String Orchestra. Since he was a child he was very interested in music and because of the keen interest of his parents to play an instrument he began taking piano lessons, but soon realized this was not his passion. However, his parents saw his musical talent and in neglect to waste it they introduce him to the double bass at the age of ten. A year ago he moved from Cuba to the United States. Here he continued his musical studies and had his first encounter with the Jazz; since then he has devoted all his time to the study of this genre, which he affirms is the most difficult because it is improvised and not carried by a tune. Carlos explains that although his passion has also been a challenge, even though he already masters the genre still has a long way to go. Albizu was admitted into the “New World School of the Arts”, a Miami Dade school dedicated to the fine arts, there he has the opportunity to complete his secondary education and grow as an artist. He also attends the International School of Music in Doral where he embellishes in his career and positively impacts his peers by offering them constructive criticism and acting as a role model. Moving to the United States has allowed Carlos to see the world from a different angle, it has taught him to appreciate more the opportunities presented to him and to be more committed to take advantage of these. Carlos aspires to be a professional Musician and wants to pursue the study of Jazz. He said that in order to accomplish his dream he must be a “real musician”, one who can understand the meaning of the notes that are being played. Moreover, he said it is impossible to describe his greatest achievement, “it’s something very difficult to explain”, well he doesn’t play to be recognized but because it is what makes him happy. Carlos said his only inspiration is music, not the school he will attend to nor who he will be. He ensures that accomplishments are what one achieves through one’s efforts, not what people consider you to be. “It does not matter where you study but who you are and how badly you want the music,” said Carlos.

Carlos explica que aunque es su pasión también ha sido un reto, y aunque ya domina el género todavía le queda un gran camino por delante Albizu fue aceptado en “New World School of the Arts”, una escuela en Miami Dade dedicada a las artes, allí tiene la oportunidad de completar su educación secundaria y crecer como artista. También asiste a la Escuela Internacional de Música en Doral, donde prospera su carrera. Mudarse a los Estados Unidos le ha permitido a Carlos ver el mundo desde otro punto de vista, le ha enseñado a apreciar mas las oportunidades que se le presentan y ha ser más comprometido para aprovecharlas. Carlos desea ser un músico profesional. Asegura que para realizar su sueño debe ser un “músico verdadero”, aquel quién puede entender el significado de las notas que está tocando. Por otra parte, comenta que es imposible describir su mayor logro “es algo muy difícil de explicar” pues el no toca el bajo para ser admirado sino porque lo hace sentirse bien y feliz. “La música está más allá de las etiquetas” explica Carlos. Carlos comentó que su única inspiración es la música y no la escuela a la que vaya a asistir ni quién vaya a ser. Asegura que un logro es lo que uno logre con su esfuerzo no lo que la gente te considere. “No es importante donde estudias sino quién eres y cuanto deseas la música”, dice Carlos.

Dangerous Numbers!!! Twenty-five million American children are overweight or obese. One out of three school-aged children in the United States is overweight or obese. These statistics clearly show that there is a problem with the eating habits of the American young population. There are different factors related to this issue, but the type of beverage that children and adolescents are consuming is a relevant contribution. The consumption of sweetened carbonated drinks or “sodas” has increased in the past decades replacing the intake of nutritious drinks and water. The main problem is that this new pattern is emerging at earlier stages of life, and is turn-

lthough children and adolescents are not going to school during the summer, parents are still going to work. Therefore, children and adolescents attend different types of summer camps where they spend the whole day until their parents are back from work. Children get involved in a variety of physical activities and it is important that they consume a balanced diet to support their energy expenditures. Living in South Florida during the summer means dealing with high temperatures and sun exposure on a daily basis. It is important that children and adolescents consume the adequate amount and quality of fluids in order to stay healthy and to be able to safely enjoy the summer. The question to be answered is: “Are our kids consuming the adequate quantity and quality of beverages to stay healthy?” As we look deeply into this issue we realize that patterns in beverage intake have dramatically changed in the last 30 years. This becomes an issue of concern not only during the summer season but also during the whole year and relates to negative health outcomes in life.

El atractivo que significa vivir en esta ciudad, significa para muchos un alto precio de resistencia, principalmente si esta recién llegado a esta ciudad… Muchos se sienten atraídos por el simple hecho de decir que vivo en Miami o para tener una mejor fuente de ingresos, pero lo que se paga por este honor en algunos de los casos significa muchos años de trabajo y sacrificio. 4th of July, not only for Americans

ike any other country, the United States, also celebrates their independence day, as this date marks the signing from which in 1776 the country proclaimed its formal separation of the British Empire. Today, many activities are held commemorating it, which according to one of the founding fathers of the nation, John Adams, the holiday is “the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” The immigrants also have our own celebrations, in which we respect the American customs, but we add our own flavor and its nice to see how the grandparents and the families in general prepare their country’s traditional dishes on this day. For us, independence day means a lot. We came here following a dream, and little by little we were able to realize it, we became independent in many ways not only politically but also economically and on a personal level. I am an example of this, I left Cuba a year and a half ago alone, without my mother and without my father, I had never gotten away from my house but I did it thinking of a better future and achieving something as precious as freedom is. At first it was difficult and I still miss it very much, but thanks to this country, I’ve done things I thought would be unattainable and the best thing is that I proved to myself that you can do anything and that all roads that may seem very dark, have a light at the end. That’s why this 4th of July, I will celebrate it double. I will celebrate for those who contributed so people like me could see our dreams come true, I will celebrate my freedom!

Hoy debido a su conmemoración se celebran muchas actividades porque como dijera uno de los padres fundadores de la nación John Adams el feriado es “el gran festival del aniversario. Debe ser conmemorado como el día de la liberación... Debe ser solemnizado con pompa y desfiles, con espectáculos, juegos, deportes, disparos de cañón, campanas, fogatas e iluminaciones, desde un extremo al otro de este continente, desde ahora en adelante y para siempre”. Los inmigrantes también hacemos nuestras, estas celebraciones, a la cual respetando las costumbres americanas le ponemos nuestro propio sabor y es que da gusto ver como las abuelas y la familia en general preparan los manjares mas tradicionales de nuestros países en este día. Para nosotros el día de la independencia significa mucho. Muchos como yo, llegamos aquí tras un sueño, que poco a poco logramos realizar, nos independizamos en muchas cosas no solo económica y políticamente sino también en el ámbito personal… Yo soy un ejemplo de ello, salí de Cuba hace un año y medio, sola, sin mamá y sin papá, nunca me había alejado de mi casa, lo hice pensando en un futuro mejor y en lograr algo tan preciado como es la libertad, al principio fue difícil y todavía hoy extraño muchísimo, pero gracias a este país, he logrado cosas que pensaba serian inalcanzables y lo mejor es que me demostré a mi misma que si se puede y que todos los caminos por muy oscuros que parezcan al final tienen grandes luces. Es por eso que este 4 de julio celebraré en grande y lo haré doble… lo hare por los que contribuyeron a que personas como yo pudieran ver sueños convertidos en realidad… Celebraré mi libertad!

Este mes ha pasado muy rápido. Acabamos de celebrar el Día del Padre y ya tenemos en espera la celebración del 4 de Julio, lo cual significa, para alegría de todos, muchas cosas que hacer. harismatic and affable. This is how Miguel Varoni appears to be, the villain of the soap opera “La casa de al lado” to his colleagues. I was able to prove it in an interview granted to us at the Telemundo studios. This actor and director who gives his characters humanism and honesty, makes them seem real and credible. He started working in television with only 5 years of age, his mother was the Colombian actress Teresa Gutierrez which by this he claims to have been into acting since he was younger. He was born in Argentina, but raised in Colombia in which he came in only four years old. Now he is a resident of the city of Doral, which fills us with joy and great pride in our community to have such sincere and talented people such as Miguel Varoni, who recognizes the work of our newspaper as a good thing for the community. -Miguel has history of playing the role as bad guys, as he was in “Mas sabe el diablo”. How do you feel real life? I feel good, I have a lot of fun acting as bad and good characters. I like my job but I’m not bad in real life or at least I don’t think so. -Is there any character that you’d like to play you have not yet developed? All of them, there’s always something. -You have been married for 15 years to the beautiful actress Catherine Siachoque. What is the key to maintaining a relationship like yours? Simply her, her ease. She is a wonderful woman, intelligent, beautiful, who manages the relationship spectacularly well ... so I guess that makes everything easier. When one is married to a woman like her everything is easier. -Many women see you as a sexy man. What do you think about this? Well I try to be, I aspire to be, and I want to be. -Are you one of those men who think they cannot live without women? Yes, because women are the most beautiful things there is. -You were the director of Jencarlos Canela’s video clip “Buscame”! Do you see yourself in some way identified with him? Yes, I love Jencarlos a lot, I met him while recording “Mas sabe el diablo” and in the work with my wife in “Pecados Ajenos”. He is a very beautiful and very loved, with a desire to do everything well and that obviously makes everyone admire him. I respect him very much for the love he puts into his work, and his desire to do things right. Jencarlos is a guy who wants to sing better every time and greatly prepares himself for his albums and his shows. -How do you see yourself best as, an actor or a director? I always say the same thing when I act I learn a lot as a director and when I direct I learn a lot as an actor. I believe the two are complementary and I think that I could not stop doing neither one. When I direct for a long time I feel the need of acting, and when I act for a long time I feel the need of directing. -What are your future plans after the tv novela “La casa de al lado”? For now I have no plans. We are very focused on this new production, because it is a demanding soap opera, usually when you do a soap opera it has a beginning, middle and end. This one is not the case because it is always surprising us, whenever you read it you’ll find new things. First, this makes it not get boring, second it is a constant challenge that makes one or another way, one cannot think too much about what to do next because you can’t, when you think your character is armed you always find new things.

Lo pude comprobar durante una entrevista que nos concedió en vivo para nuestro periódico en los estudios de Telemundo. Este actor y director, que dota a sus personajes de humanismo, sinceridad, los hace cercanos y creíbles, llego a la televisión con solo 5 años de edad; Su madre era la actriz colombiana ya desaparecida Teresa Gutiérrez por lo que el asegura haber estado en la actuación desde mas pequeño. Miguel tienes historia interpretando personajes malos, como fue en “Mas sabe el diablo”?Como te sientes en la vida real? -Me siento bien, me gusta, me divierto mucho haciendo personajes de malo o de bueno; A mi me gusta mucho mi trabajo pero no soy malo en la vida real al menos eso creo. ¿Algún personaje que te gustaría interpretar que no hayas desarrollado? -Todos, siempre hay algo. Estas casado hace 15 años con la bella actriz Catherine Siachoque ¿Cuál es la clave para mantener una relación como la de ustedes? -Simplemente: Ella, su soltura. Ella es una mujer maravillosa, inteligente, hermosísima, que maneja la relación espectacularmente bien… en fin yo creo que eso hace que todo sea mas fácil, cuando uno esta casado con una mujer como ella todo es mas fácil. Muchas mujeres te ven como un hombre sexy? Tu que crees? -Pues trato de serlo, aspiro serlo, y quiero serlo. ¿Eres de los hombres que piensa que no se puede vivir sin las mujeres? -Si, porque las mujeres son lo mas bello que hay. Fuiste el director del video clip de Jencarlos Canela “Búscame”! Te ves de algún modo identificado con él? -Si, yo a Jencarlos lo quiero muchísimo, lo conocí durante la grabación de “Mas sabe el diablo” y el trabajo con mi esposa en “Pecados ajenos”. E un muchacho bellísimo y muy querido, con unas ganas de hacer las cosas bien y eso obviamente hace que lo quiera mucho, lo respeto mucho por su amor al trabajo, por sus ganas de hacer las cosas bien. Jencarlos es un muchacho que quiere cantar cada vez mejor que se prepara mucho para sus discos para su espectáculo. ¿Como te ves mejor de actor o de director? -Siempre digo lo mismo cuando actúo aprendo mucho como director y cuando dirijo aprendo mucho como actor. Creo que las dos son complementarias y creo que yo no podría dejar de hacer una por hacer la otra porque son necesarias las dos, entonces cuando dirijo mucho tiempo me hace falta actuar y cuando actúo mucho tiempo me hace falta dirigir. ¿Y que proyectos tienes después de la telenovela “La casa de al lado”? -No todavía no tengo nada. Estamos muy concentrados en esta nueva producción, porque es una novela muy exigente, generalmente cuando uno hace una novela como que tiene un principio, un desarrollo y un fin, en esta novela, no es el caso porque siempre nos esta sorprendiendo, entonces cada vez que tu la lees te vas encontrando con cosas nuevas. Esto hace primero que no te aburras, segundo que sea un reto constante y eso hace que de una u otra manera, uno no pueda pensar mucho en lo que va a hacer después porque no puedes, porque cuando piensas que tu personaje esta armado te encuentras con cosas nuevas.

he interpreter of the new musical movement of the urban bachata, Yunel Cruz is using his visit to the state of Florida, for an extensive tour with a view to promoting his new single album “Made for you” and participate in the organized event by “The League Against Cancer” in Miami, this past June 5th. In a recent visit to the city of Doral, Yunel agreed to give an interview: DFJ: Yunel, you’re currently considered a great promise for the Bachata genre following the footsteps of Prince Royce. How you feel now as the new revelation of this kind? YC: I feel very honored, first because it gives me the opportunity to follow the footsteps not only of Prince Royce, but also of large groups such as Aventura and also the largest Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra, who introduced for the first time to the world what bachata really is. DFJ: Since when did you realized you liked the bachata and start your career? YC: Since I was born. I grew up between New York and Miami, my parents always kept me close to my roots since I was little I attended concerts of great music, which I adore and love so much. DFJ: Your first single “dominicanita” obtained seventh place in the tropical chart of the Billboard magazine. Who inspired you? YC: The subject was a real inspiration. I met a compatriot in my country and from there I kept that in mind. Due to life issues the relationship did not reach beyond the illusion. While in New York the inspiration began and from there came the song. DFJ: Recently you participated in the league against cancer in Miami. How did you feel to put your music in the service of good causes? YC: For me it is of vital importance to support worthy causes. To me particularly cancer hit one of my family members which thanks to God is getting better, but it was a great pain for us to find out they had the disease. I have worked for several events for the St. Jude Hospital, which seeks to improve the health of children with this disease. DFJ: What do you miss most about your family! I imagine that with all this new success you’ve had to separate from them for a while. YC: The Family is my everything. The support, the tranquility and peace that every human being should have. While working and traveling, I try to always keep in touch and whenever I can, meet my cousins for us to play basketball which is my favorite sport. To all young people recommend that you first study and get prepared. I’ve always wanted to sing, but bue to the insistence of my father, I went to college and graduated as business administration. Today I appreciate this as it allowed me to be who I am now. DFJ: What are your next projects? YC: I’m promoting my second single “Made For You “ that thank God it was debuted in the top 20 of Billboard magazine. I will be traveling to different cities combining the promotion with my performances along with my band. I will soon return to Doral, since I consider Miami as my second home because I lived there for 7 years. From now on, my first album will come out, I will record the video and by the end of summer I will realize my first tour at Europe. Without any doubt, we captured the charm and simplicity of Yunel Cruz, which promises to be a great revelation and the new idol of Latin music with many hits to come!

l intérprete del nuevo movimiento musical de la Bachata Urbana, Yunel Cruz, está aprovechando la visita al estado de la Florida, para realizar una extensa gira con miras a promocionar su más reciente sencillo discográfico “Made For You” y participar en el evento organizado por la “Liga contra el Cáncer” en Miami, el pasado 5 de junio. En una reciente visita a la ciudad de Doral, Yunel accedió a darnos una entrevista, que se la ofrecemos a continuación: DFJ: Yunel, tu actualmente estas considerado una gran promesa de la bachata siguiendole los pasos a Prince Royce. Como te sientes ahora como la nueva revelación de este género? YC: Me siento muy honrado, primero porque se me da la oportunidad de seguir los pasos no solo de Prince Royce, sino también de grandes agrupaciones como Aventura y además el más grande artista dominicano, Juan Luis Guerra, que le enseñó por primera vez al mundo lo que es la bachata. DFJ: Desde cuando notaste que te gustaba la bachata e iniciaste tu carrera? YC: Desde que nací. Aunque me crié entre New York y Miami, mis padres siempre me mantuvieron cerca de mis raíces y desde que estaba pequeño asistía a conciertos de los grandes de la música, la cual adoro y amo tanto. DFJ: Tu primer sencillo “Dominicanita” obtuvo el séptimo lugar del Tropical Chart de la afamada revista Billboard. En quién te inspiraste? YC: Este tema fue una inspiración real. Conocí una paisana en mi país y desde ahí me quedé con eso en la cabeza. Por cuestiones de la vida la relación no llegó más allá de la ilusión. Estando en New York comenzó la inspiración y de ahí la canción. DFJ: Participaste hace poco en la Liga Contra el Cáncer en Miami. Como te sientes al poner tu música al servicio de las buenas causas? YC: Para mi es de vital importancia ayudar a las nobles causas. A mi particularmente el cáncer me ha tocado en un familiar que gracias a Dios está mejorando, pero fue un gran dolor para nosotros al saber que padecía la enfermedad. He colaborado para varios eventos del St. Jude Hospital, que busca mejorar la salud de niños con esta enfermedad. Desde que vi la oportunidad de participar en este teletón, no lo dude nunca y siempre que pueda vendré para ofrecer lo que Dios con los demás. DFJ: Cuéntame que mas extrañas de tu familia! Me imagino que ante todo este nuevo éxito, has tenido que separarte por un tiempo. YC: La familia es para mi todo. El soporte, la tranquilidad y la paz que debe tener cada ser humano. Aunque trabajo y viajo, trato de siempre mantenerme en contacto y cada vez que puedo, reúno a mis primos para que juguemos baloncesto que es el deporte que amo. A los jóvenes les recomiendo que primero estudien y se preparen. Yo quise siempre cantar, pero por insistencia de mi padre, fui a la universidad y me gradué de administrador de empresas. Hoy en día agradezco esto ya que me permitió ser quien soy ahora. DFJ: Cuáles son tus próximos proyectos? YC: Ahora estoy promocionando mi segundo sencillo “Made For You” que gracias a Dios debutó en el puesto 20 de la revista Billboard. Estaré viajando por las diferentes ciudades combinando la promoción con mis presentaciones junto con mi banda. Al Doral volveré pronto ya que considero Miami como mi segunda casa porque aquí viví por 7 años. En lo adelante, saldrá mi primera producción discográfica, grabaré el video y a finalizar el verano realizaré la primera gira por Europa. Each transaction requires you to share personal information: your bank and credit card account numbers; your income; your Social Security number (SSN); or your name, address, and phone numbers. It’s important to find out what happens to the personal information you and your children provide to companies, marketers, and government agencies. These organizations may use your information simply to process your order; to tell you about products, services, or promotions; or to share with others. And then there are unscrupulous individuals, like identity thieves, who want your information to commit fraud. Identity theft — the fastest-growing white-collar crime in America — occurs when someone steals your personal identifying information, like your SSN, birth date, or mother’s maiden name, to open new charge accounts, order merchandise, or borrow money. Consumers targeted by identity thieves usually don’t know they’ve been victimized. But when the fraudsters fail to pay the bills or repay the loans, collection agencies begin pursuing the consumers to cover debts they didn’t even know they had. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC offers these tips to help you manage your personal information wisely, and to help minimize its misuse. • Before you reveal any personally identifying information, find out how it will be used and whether it will be shared with others. Ask about company’s privacy policy. • Read the privacy policy on any website directed to children. Websites directed to children or that knowingly collect information from kids under 13 must post a notice of their information collection practices. • Put passwords on your all your accounts, including your credit card account, and your bank and phone accounts. • Avoid using easily available information — like your mother’s maiden name, your birth date, the last four digits of your SSN, or your phone number — or obvious choices, like a series of consecutive numbers. • Minimize the identification information and the number of cards you carry to what you’ll actually need. Don’t put all your identifying information in one holder in your purse, briefcase, or backpack. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place. When you discard receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, bank checks and statements, expired charge cards, credit offers you get in the mail, and mailing labels from magazines, tear or shred them. That will help thwart any identity thief who may pick through your trash or recycling bins to capture your personal information. • Order a copy of your credit report. Make sure it’s accurate and includes only those activities you’ve authorized. Usted puede hacer un cheque en el almacén, comprar con su tarjeta de crédito boletos para un partido de béisbol, alquilar un auto, enviar por correo su Declaración de Impuestos, comprar un regalo en Internet, llamar a su casa desde el teléfono celular, hacer una cita con su médico, o solicitar una nueva tarjeta de crédito. Cada transacción requiere que usted comparta su información personal: los números de sus tarjetas de crédito y cuentas bancarias; su ingreso; su número de Seguro Social; o su nombre, domicilio y números de teléfono. s much as we all love fireworks, those of us with pets know that the Fourth of July can be one of the worst days of the year. As many pet lovers know, fireworks and thunder storms can cause a great deal of stress for some animals. Even the most placid of pets can panic from these pyrotechnic rumbles and flashes. Here are some tips to help keep your dog calm and keep them safe during booming fireworks: To protect your dog’s security and peace of mind, leave him at home during fireworks displays. Close all of the windows, blinds, and curtains. Leave the fan running at normal level to provide a little white noise. If you must leave your pet outside, provide shelter for them in a garage or basement with a comfortable blanket and a supply of fresh water. Any pet who is frightened by normal thunderstorms should not be left alone during fireworks displays. Consider hiring a petsitter or asking a family friend to stay with them. If you plan to set off firecrackers at home, give your dog a break and leave him in the house and away from the scary noises. Pets that panic will often crash through a window, chew through a leash or climb a fence to try to “escape” from the fireworks monsters and become disoriented. He might run right around to the front door to wait for you, but he’s more likely to keep running. If this happens to your pet, contact your local animal shelters and veterinary clinics to let them know your dog is missing. Be sure that your dog always wears a securely buckled collar and tag and consider having him microchipped for extra safety. If your pet does run away during during the exploding noise of a fireworks display, you will have a better chance of recovering the animal if it is wearing an ID tag. Contact your veterinarian now for professional advice or assistance in preparing animals for the noisy days to come. For household pets, an otherwise quiet and well-secured room with television or radio playing at normal volume may be just what the doctor orders. Lastly, take a photograph of your pet and place the telephone numbers of your veterinarian and Animal Care and Control agency near your home phone and in your cell phone. In the event of an escaped animal or crisis, you can contact these professionals promptly for guidance.

She met a group of good swimmers who become her biggest competitors, making the internal competition helping her grow much more as an athlete. This is how she is able to be one of the first in her group (team), duo (duet) and alone in her category13-15. For various competitions of the season she has won medals in the first place and now in the regionals she has achieved her classification for the nationals in the 3 categories. Cristal, with her dedication and discipline in synchronized swimming is a winner and we wish her the best of luck in this new challenge.

Una adolescente residente del Doral, Cristal Campocasso, tiene su ticket listo para viajar a los Nacionales Age Group de Nado Sincronizado a realizarse en Seattle, WA. A partir del 24 de junio. Cristal comenzó este bello deporte a la edad de 6 años en su natal Venezuela, y al llegar a Miami, continuo aprendiendo nuevas técnicas y desarrollándose como atleta. Durante ese tiempo logro llegar a ser la mejor atleta en su categoría en todo el estado de la Florida por varios años consecutivos. Friday June 3rd was a very special day for the Doral Park elite women’s tennis team, who received the trophy and medals for winning the 2010-2011 South Florida Women’s Double Tennis League, in a ceremony held in the Coral Oaks Club in Pinecrest, FL. The Doral finished the season undefeated, comfortably winning all of their matches as they won 58 of the possible 70 points. All of the competitors agree that this team is something special, demonstrating a great level of tennis and a positive attitude off the courts, making the a very memorable opponent. They also agree that Doral Park’s facilities are second to none and that the food offered after the matches is always something special. En un ceremonia en el Club Coral Oaks de Pinecrest le fue entregado el trofeo y las medallas que lo certifican como campeón absoluto de la temporada 2010-2011 en “South Florida Women Dobles Tennis League” . El equipo del Doral, terminó la temporada invicto, ganando ampliamente todos sus partidos, logrando acumular 58 puntos de 70 posibles y demostrando un gran nivel competitivo. Cristal began the sport at 6 years of age in his native country, Venezuela. When she came to Miami she continued with the sport learning new techniques and developing herself as athlete. Myles Porter pursues Olyimpic History By Ernest Pund

ue to a visual impairment, what he sees when he looks across the mat at his opponent is something like most of us would see from a hundred feet - that’d be enough to stop a lot of people from taking the next step. But what does Porter know? Why does this 2008 Paralympian take the next step, and the next, and the next? What Porter knows is that almost anything is possible. “No matter what, If you just put your mind to it, you can do just about anything,” Porter said. Porter is his own proof. He’s been on a rocket ride, not only in Paralympic judo but in ablebodied competition, taking third in October at the 2009 Rendez-Vous Canada in Montreal, an elite, internacional USA Judo Senior B-Level tournament. This a big deal, said Eddie Liddie, Porter’s coach and the USA Judo Director of Athlete Performance. “Porter is the second vision-impaired athlete to place at a B-Level event. A lot of ambitious, fully sighted athletes never come close to that,” Liddie said. “And Porter isn’t stopping there”. Far beyond what he physically sees, and a short stretch beyond what he knows about winning in life, Porter has a goal, a vision of his future. He sees himself headed for London in 2012 to compete at the Olympic Games. That’s something that no other judoka has ever done, competed in both the Paralympics and the Olympics Games. “To do it in judo would just be huge,” Porter said. Oh, yeah it would be huge, and not just because Porter has a substantial visual impairment, an ocular albinism that means he lacks pigment in his retina and has difficulty discerning detail. Porter’s ascent has been amazingly steep and fast. He first stepped on a mat just four years ago. And it wasn’t even a real judo mat, a traditional tatami.

What Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / NYAC / USA Judo Nacional Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) sees and what he knows are two very different things.

His first club was at the University of Toledo where the team worked out on gymnastic floors. It was almost by chance that he landed in the university club at all. Porter had dropped a class at the university and needed to fill the gap with an elective so that he could stay in the dorms. Porter recalls that his advisor gave him three choices: karate, “something like basket weaving,” and judo. He’d seen “The Karate Kid” -- not his favorite movie. He’d been in wrestling for years - his dad coached the sport - and he knew just enough about judo to make that his choice. It wasn’t long before he was hooked.

“They taught me how to fall and three throws the first day because I had to catch up,” he said. He quickly jumped into tournaments and learned fast that “on any given day, you can be beaten by someone else,” he said. That’s a big part of what Porter likes about the sport - the challenge that comes from that uncertainty. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. Every tournament is different ... it’s real unpredictable. Some dark horse could come out of nowhere,” Porter said. Less than a year after he first stepped into a dojo, Porter qualified for his first World Blind Championship Team. That was also the first time he stepped on a plane, in April 2006, to attend a mandatory judo camp for judokas who had made the cut. Then he was off to France, on his second plane flight, where he took fifth in Paralympic competition in the Judo World Championships. Porter’s climb has been so fast that he and Olympian Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) add a little comic routine to just about every judo demonstration they do. Almost invariably someone will ask: “How long have you been doing judo?” Reser has been at it for 24 years. “That’s always our punch line, because I’m only 24 years old,” Porter said. “I always let him answer first.” After a chuckle, Porter credited Reser and Liddie with much of his success. There are lots of people to thank. His parents instilled in him a sense of self-sufficiency and selfdetermination, a can-do esteem that he takes everywhere. And his coach at the University of Toledo, Josh White, was great, too, Porter said. But Liddie and Reser have taken him the distance since to major national and international competitions.

he priority of the Doral Little League has been to promote and reveal the practice of baseball in our area, which has grown steadily. Each year Little League International recognizes individuals for their commitment to, and participation in, the Little League program. This past June 11 at the Doral Meadows Park facilities took place the award ceremony on the occasion of the completion of the Doral Little League season and participation in all levels of baseball from ages 5 to 16 years old. Pablo Guelmez, current president of the league and in an exclusive interview with Doral Family Journal told us that this is his eighth year in the league since it was inaugurated in 2003. “This year’s season was excellent. Each passing year we are improving, thanks to the experience of previous tournaments and the talent that exists in the Doral Little League. It is great, we have a good league with good players “ said Guelmez. After several months of competition, the young players received an award for the work done during the spring tournament in this ceremony. These are the champions of the Spring tournament: Coach Pitch (Category of 7 to 8 years): the Padres won. Minors (Category of 9 and 10 years): the Royals won. Majors (Category of 11 and 12 years): the Reds won. Juniors (Category of 13 and 15 years): the Angels won. “The highlight of the season, was the Coach Pitch division, the work they did at the Nationals was amazing, they have a staff dedicated to children and thats why they won the championship,” said Pablo. In the minors division, the royals began slow but the talent they had on the team was exceeded during the season and they won the two tournaments: the regular season and playoffs. The majors division was pretty tight between the three teams: the Yankees, the Reds and the Mets, but at the end of the day, the Reds won the championships of the season.” At the end of the interview, Pablo Guelmez, took an opportunity to thank the vote to favor for Mayor Bermudez and the council, which occurred last week. “For the ninth year, we will continue with the Doral Little League, ... we had a concern that the city would decide to give the ball program to other affiliations, but they voted for us and we are ready for another campaign.”

Es magnifico, tenemos una liga bien compuesta con buenos peloteros”dice Guelmez. Después de varios meses de competencia, los jóvenes peloteros recibieron el premio al trabajo desarrollado durante el torneo en esta ceremonia. Estos son los campeones del torneo: Coach Pitch : Categoría de 7 a 8 años, ganaron los Padres Minors : Categoría de 9 y 10 años, ganaron los Royals Majors Categoría de 11 y 12 años, ganaron los Reds Juniors : Categoría de 13 y 15 años, ganaron los Angels. “Lo mas destacado de la temporada, fue la división de los Coach Pitch, el trabajo que hicieron en los nacionales fue increíble, tienen uno staff dedicado a los niños y por eso ganaron el campeonato” ase lo comenta Pablo. La división de los Minors, y de los Royals empezaron bien lentos pero el talento que tenían en el equipo fue sobrepasando durante la temporada y ellos ganaron los dos torneos, la de la temporada regular y el play off. En la división de los Majors fue bastante reñida entre los tres equipos: los Yanquis, los Reds y los Mets, pero al final del día, los Reds tenían unos instructores fantásticos por lo que ganaron ambos campeonatos de la temporada”. Al finalizar la entrevista, Pablo Guelmez, aprovecho para agradecer el voto a favor del Alcalde Bermúdez y los concejales, que se dio la semana pasada. “Por noveno año, vamos a seguir con Doral Little League,… teníamos la preocupación de que la ciudad decidiera darle el programa de la pelota a otras afiliaciones, pero votaron a favor de nosotros y estamos preparados para otra campaña”.

on Sebastián Vettel y su Red Bull en la Pole, Fernando Alonso con su Ferrari y un Felipe Massa muy rápido durante todo el fin de semana, se cierran los tres primeros de la parrilla de salida en Canadá. La carrera comenzó con bandera amarilla y el auto de seguridad, la lluvia que se dejaba caer sobre la pista imposibilitaba la visión de los pilotos sin embargo luego de cinco vueltas con el auto de seguridad. Se daría la largada, manteniendo el orden de los tres primeros y dejando un incidente en pista donde el protagonista seria Lewis Hamilton quien tocaría a Weber y que perdería posiciones quedando relegado a la posición numero 16,… girarían en el mismo orden del comienzo, con mucha agua sobre el asfalto Canadiense. De nuevo Hamilton intenta pasar a su compañero Button y se tocan; esta vez seria, Lewis quien perdería y quedaría fuera de la competencia a consecuencia de las serias

averías en la suspensión trasera de su auto. La lluvia volvió a caer sobre la pista, obligando a los comisarios a parar la carrera de nuevo dejando caer la bandera roja en el trazado. Los autos regresarían a la salida y la carrera duraría mas de dos horas suspendida. Luego de los arreglos pertinentes en cuanto al secado de la pista, se reanudó la carrera de la misma forma que comenzó, con bandera amarilla y el auto de seguridad en pista durante 6 vueltas para así dar la largada y con la pista mojada regresaríamos a la carrera. Un Sebastián Vettel en la punta que sacaba ventaja pero desde atrás aparecía Jenson Button con su Mclaren, rebasando rivales y dejando fuera de carrera a Fernando Alonso que veía escapar todas sus posibilidades. Aparecería otro protagonista, Michael Shumacher que se colocaría de segundo haciendo una gran carrera, sin embargo el asfalto se iría secando y a

pesar de la ruptura de uno de los neumáticos traseros, Button era el más rápido en la pista y desde el último lugar, daba caza a los primeros… Vettel se despegaría en el primer lugar pero la aparición de una nueva bandera amarilla ocasionada por Niké Haifel, arruinaría la gran ventaja construida por Sebastián y su Red Bull. Se daría la largada y Button se colocaría segundo detrás de Vettel para darle caza y en la última vuelta de la carrera lo inesperado ocurriría; Vettel comete un grave error en la parte mojada de la pista que lo deja sin la victoria y Button quien vendría desde el último lugar remontando en plena ultima vuelta, se adueñaría de la victoria. La carrera de su vida para Jason luego de entrar 6 veces a los pits rematando una carrera que lo coloca en el segundo lugar de la clasificación general detrás de Sebastián Vettel. Carrera dramática impredecible. Un final no apto para cardiacos aquí en Canadá. Nuestra próxima cita será en el gran Premio de Europa desde España en la tierra de la Paella Valencia. Veremos que nos depara el fabuloso mundo de la Formula 1

any of the residents of Doral share the idea that one of the most prized attractions of the city is that most residential associations have a gym ; large, small, professional or classical, all serve to get in shape. If we add the great social contribution, which involves physical and emotional exercise and good health, then the gym is almost a priority. Doral Isles residents understand this principle well and for years have made this sport, a reason to live and have developed a family style connection. On June 3rd, these healthy residents celebrated 10 years of uninterrupted work of the Puerto Rican coach Pilar Leon and with the highest fashion , after a long cardio class began the festivities with an abundance of healthy food , diet drinks, lots of water and to finish, with indulgence, a huge cake served to compensate for the spent calories!!!!!

uchos de los residentes del Doral comparten la idea de que uno de los atractivos mas preciados de la ciudad es que la mayoría de las asociaciones residenciales tiene algún gimnasio; grandes, pequeños, profesionales o clásicos, todos sirven para ponerse en forma. Si a eso le agregamos el gran aporte social, físico y emocional que trae el hacer ejercicio y tener buena salud, entonces los gimnasios son casi una prioridad. Los residentes de Doral Isles entienden bien este principio y durante años han hecho de esta práctica deportiva, una razón de vivir y han creado un vínculo que diríamos familiar. El pasado 3 de Junio estos sanos residentes, celebraron los 10 años de trabajo ininterrumpido de la entrenadora boricua Pilar León y lo hicieron al mejor estilo deportivo: terminando una larga clase de cardio comenzaron los festejos, abundaron los platillos con comidas poco elaboradas y muy sanas, sólo habían bebidas dietéticas, mucho agua y para culminar, con mucha indulgencia, un pastel enorme que sirvió para compensar las calorías perdidas!!!
