South Florida ON THE SCENE in the face of California fires

January has been a devastating month for residents of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and its surrounding regions, who since Jan. 7 have seen their streets burn in flames due to several fires that have claimed the lives of at least 27 people and destroyed thousands of homes. In the face of this tragedy, South Florida has been on the scene with donations and aid in different forms through Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) headquartered in Doral.
“We deployed an advance team to Los Angeles on Jan. 9 led by our director of field operations domestically and our director of operations in California. Our team is comprised of fire survivors of the 2018 Paradise fire (Northern California), so we have a very informed approach,” explains Emily Fullmer, chief operations officer at GEM, which base office to respond to the emergency is located in Chico, California.
The organization’s work consists of distributing cash cards and essential family kits with hygiene products and food to those who have evacuated or lost their homes through BStrong, an initiative in partnership with GEM that provides emergency
assistance to people in crisis. The purpose of delivering cash cards is to grant enough money to survivors so they can cover expenses of a hotel and short-term incidentals.
“With the size of this disaster, we will be operating in California for multiple years, and we will use a lot of what we’ve learned from our experiences responding to other fires (Paradise, 2018, Maui, 2023) to put together a long-term response,” Emily says, adding that phase 1 will end when the fires are extinguished. At the time of press, some were still active.
The goal of phase 1 is to cover the immediate needs of survivors, while during phase 2, the organization will cover its medium-term needs through donations of mattresses, bedding and all kinds of urgent items to live in interim housing.
“We have warehouses in Chico, Los Angeles and Doral from which trucks are being transported with products to be quickly distributed among all impacted areas. We can, for example, send a truck on Monday night and it will arrive on Tuesday morning.”
Most donations that have been deployed
come from Fortune 500 companies (both goods for victims and supplies for volunteers) but GEM has also received help from individuals who have come to the Doral office to assemble essential kits. “Both companies and individuals are donating their time, money and resources to make all of this possible.”

Enero ha sido un mes devastador para los habitantes del área metropolitana de Los Angeles y sus regiones circundantes que desde el 7 de enero han visto sus calles arder en llamas por cuenta de varios incendios que han cobrado la vida de al menos 27 personas y destruido miles de casas. Ante esta tragedia, el Sur de la Florida se ha hecho presente con donaciones y ayuda de todo tipo a través de Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) con sede principal en Doral.
“Enviamos un equipo avanzado a Los Angeles el pasado 9 de enero liderado por nuestro director de operaciones de campo a nivel nacional y nuestro director de operaciones en California. Nuestro equipo está integrado por sobrevivientes del incendio de Paradise (Norte de California) del 2018, así que tenemos un enfoque muy informado,” explica Emily Fullmer, directora de operaciones de GEM, cuya oficina base para atender la emergencia está localizada en Chico, California.
El trabajo de la organización consiste en distribuir tarjetas con efectivo y kits esenciales para la familia con productos de higiene y comida a quienes han evacuado o han perdido sus hogares a través de BStrong, una iniciativa
en alianza con GEM que provee asistencia de emergencia a personas en crisis. El propósito de entregar las tarjetas es proveer suficiente dinero a los afectados para que puedan costear un hotel e imprevistos a corto plazo.
“Debido al tamaño del desastre, seguiremos operando en California durante varios años y usaremos lo que hemos aprendido de nuestras experiencias respondiendo a otros incendios (Paradise, 2018, Maui, 2023) para armar una respuesta a largo plazo”, explica Emily, añadiendo que la fase 1 terminará cuando los incendios estén extinguidos. Al cierre de esta edición, algunos seguían activos.
El objetivo de la fase 1 es cubrir las necesidades inmediatas de los sobrevivientes, mientras durante la fase 2, la organización cubrirá sus necesidades a mediano plazo con donaciones de colchones, ropa de cama y todo tipo de artículos perentorios para habitar viviendas provisionales.
“Tenemos almacenes en Chico, Los Angeles y Doral desde donde se están transportando camiones con productos para ser distribuidos rápidamente en todas las áreas impactadas. Podemos, por ejemplo, enviar un camión el lunes en la noche y éste llegará el martes por la mañana”, dice Emily.
La mayoría de las donaciones que se han enviado provienen de empresas Fortune 500 (tanto de bienes para las víctimas como dotación para los voluntarios) pero también han contado con la colaboración de personas que han acudido a la oficina de Doral para ayudar a armar los kits esenciales. “Tanto empresas como individuos están donando su tiempo, dinero y recursos para hacer todo esto posible”.

Economy 2025 in the NEW TRUMP ERA

Donald Trump will begin his second term on Jan. 20 and after settling in the White House, all eyes will be on the economy and the new measures he will implement that will determine, in big part, whether or not 2025 will be a year of growth and opportunities for the nation.
The president-elect promised while campaigning to impose new tariffs on imports, make effective selective tax exemptions, help more middle-class residents, especially with regards to housing access, and lower prices, among other measures.
“All the conditions are in place for us to have a wonderful economy in 2025,” says without hesitation Ivan Jimenez, Managing Director at Greenholder Corporation, a company that develops economic analysis.
The conditions are right, first of all, because Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in November was overwhelming and the Senate is now mostly represented by the Republican party, which will increase Trump’s power to implement any policy he wishes, while at the same time will replace the uncertainty atmosphere of four years ago by one of confidence and optimism.
“In this case, there is no fertile ground for uncertainty as there was a clear definition of the winner and the markets love that,” says Jimenez, adding that having certainty in results and conditions is one of the requirements for the economy to prosper.
Another advantage point is that almost all battles that were fought in the COVID-19 aftermath to stabilize and boost the economy have already been won. For example, the latest unemployment rate as of December 2024 was 4.1% compared to a rate of 14.8% in April 2020, one of the worst moments of the pandemic.
While this doesn’t mean there are no opportunities for improvement, it does, however, signs that the economy is creating jobs without the peaks of shortages seen four years ago. The same can be said of inflation, which as of November 2024 was placed in a rate of 2.7% in contrast to the June 2022 inflation rate of 9.1% when it broke its record
of the last 40 years.
TRENDING TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY
Given the current conditions that find the new administration, Ivan Jimenez believes that “rampant inflation” is not anticipated for 2025. “The direction it’s going is downwards and we are, perhaps, in one of the best moments of the economy of the last 50 years.”
The path is even clear for the goal set by the FED of reaching a 2% inflation rate to be met between June and September of this year, so long as the price of oil doesn’t skyrocket and the rate of productivity and competition in the United States is maintained.
On the other hand, consumer confidence is expected to be stable if we consider that 2024 closed with an increase in consumption of more than 3 percent compared to 2023 in categories such as jewelry, clothing and items with a price value greater than $500 and not in basic home goods.
Nevertheless, consumers may find it difficult to meet their financial commitments if we factor that even though they took risks in December, the default rate on credit card payments increased considerably compared to 2023.
And what will happen to prices? The answer is unknown, pending how aggressive are the import tariffs the president-elect promised to impose and what specific groups affect. On a positive note, the impact of these will not be apparent in the first 6 to 12 months.
“Prices won’t rise immediately due to inventory. I mean, if you have a full tank and gas prices increase to a dollar, that doesn’t actually hurt you until the tank is empty,”
Jimenez explains with a metaphor.
But prices will rise eventually and as of now it’s not clear how that could alter the entire value and logistics chains. “This is the big question that remains unanswered, because there is no certainty on whether tariffs will be a bargaining chip or if they will truly be increased,” he says.
As for housing prices, something that is undoubtedly a major concern for citizens, rent is not expected to rise by 30% as occurred in previous years, although 30-year mortgage interest rates remain relatively high.
“The housing issue has been the most painful one in the economy of the last three years for a group of people. Let us remember that the difference between rent prices and prices of other goods is that when the former increases, it doesn’t tend to go down. My advice is that this year try to buy a home, one that you can afford at this time.”
As for national production, it’s foreseen that in 2025 measures will be implemented to facilitate the export of natural gas and oil, which would increase the nation’s income and help the gross domestic product grow. It’s wise to consider that the reduction in tax rates promised by the government could impact, as it tends to do so, productivity and the amount of money in circulation.
There will be opportunities for the technology manufacturing sector following the approval of the CHIPS Act, that aims to encourage job creation and generate greater returns through funds of which only 5% has been used.
“This means that 95% of the approved funds have yet to be used to promote more manufacturing into the United States, that is, everything that has to do with innovation and new sciences.”
Given the above, one might think that in 2025 we will have an economy with sustainable growth with not projected disruptions in its trajectory, according to the stock market that analyzes the results of the largest companies in the United States. “I am of that school of thought,” concludes the CEO of Greenholder Corporation.

Donald Trump comenzará su segundo mandato el 20 de enero y tras instalarse en la Casa Blanca, todos los ojos estarán puestos en la economía a la espera de conocer sus nuevas medidas, pues la pregunta que ronda por estos días es si este 2025 será o no, un año de crecimiento y oportunidades para la nación.
Y es que el presidente electo prometió mientras hacía campaña imponer nuevos aranceles a las importaciones, efectuar exenciones fiscales selectivas, ayudar más a la clase media, sobre todo en cuanto al acceso a vivienda, y bajar los precios, entre otras propuestas.
“Todas las condiciones están dadas para que tengamos una economía formidable en el 2025”, dice sin titubeos Iván Jiménez, director general de Greenholder Corporation, una empresa que hace análisis económicos.
Las condiciones están dadas en primer lugar porque la victoria de Donald Trump sobre la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris en noviembre fue contundente y hay uniformidad en el senado que ahora es mayormente republicano, lo cual influirá no solo en que Trump tenga poder para implementar cualquier política que desee sino en que el clima incierto de hace cuatro años sea reemplazado por uno de confianza y optimismo.
“En este caso, no hay terreno fértil para la incertidumbre porque hubo una clara definición del ganador y eso les encanta a los mercados”, asegura Jiménez, añadiendo que tener certeza de resultados y de condiciones es uno de los requisitos para que la economía prospere.
Otro punto a favor es que casi todas las batallas que se emprendieron en el marco del COVID-19 para estabilizar e impulsar la economía ya fueron peleadas y ganadas. Por ejemplo, la última tasa de desempleo a diciembre del 2024 fue de 4,1% frente a una tasa de 14,8% en abril del 2020, uno de los peores momentos de la pandemia.
Si bien esto no quiere decir que no haya oportunidades para mejorar, si indica que la economía está generando empleos sin los picos de escasez que se vieron hace cuatro años. Lo mismo se puede decir de la
inflación que a noviembre del 2024 fue de 2,7% en contraste con una inflación de 9,1% en junio del 2022 cuando batió su récord de los últimos 40 años.
LA BALANZA SE INCLINA
HACIA LA SOSTENIBILIDAD
Dadas las condiciones en las que nacerá la nueva administración, Iván Jiménez considera que no se anticipa una “inflación galopante”. “La dirección que lleva es hacia abajo y estamos en tal vez uno de los mejores puntos de la economía de los últimos 50 años”.
Incluso, el camino está despejado para que la meta de llegar a un 2% de inflación que se ha puesto la Reserva Federal se cumpla entre junio y septiembre de este año, siempre y cuando el precio del petróleo no se dispare y se mantenga la tasa de productividad y competencia de Estados Unidos.
Por otro lado, la confianza del consumidor se prevé estable si tomamos como referencia que el 2024 cerró con un aumento en el consumo de más del 3 por ciento en comparación con el 2023 en categorías como joyas, prendas y artículos con un valor superior a los $500 y no en bienes básicos de la canasta familiar.
Sin embargo, al consumidor puede que se le dificulte cumplir con sus compromisos financieros porque aunque tomó riesgos en diciembre, la tasa de presencia de mora en los pagos de las tarjetas de crédito aumentó considerablemente en contraste con el 2023. Y ¿qué pasará con los precios? La respuesta más directa es que no se sabe porque eso depende de cuán fuertes sean los aranceles a las importaciones que el presidente electo prometió imponer y a qué sectores afecten. No obstante, el impacto de éstos no se hará evidente en los primeros 6 a 12 meses.
“Los precios no suben inmediatamente por cuestión de inventario. A ver, si tienes el tanque lleno y la gasolina aumenta a un dólar, no te afecta hasta que el tanque se vacíe,” explica Jiménez a modo de metáfora.
Aun así, los precios subirán eventualmente y hoy por hoy no se sabe cómo eso podría alterar toda la cadena de valor y logística.
“Este es el gran interrogante porque no hay certeza de si los aranceles serán una pieza de negociación o si van a ser verdaderamente incrementados”, comenta.
En cuanto a los precios de la vivienda, algo que sin duda preocupa mucho a los ciudadanos, no se anticipa que los alquileres vayan a subir un 30% como ocurrió en años anteriores aunque las tasas de interés de hipotecas a 30 años siguen relativamente altas.
“El tema de la vivienda ha sido el punto más doloroso de la economía para un sector de la población durante los últimos tres años. Recordemos que la diferencia entre el precio del alquiler y el precio de otras cosas es que cuando aumenta no tiende a bajar. Mi consejo es que este año trate de tener vivienda propia, la que pueda en este momento pagar”.
En cuanto a la producción nacional, se vislumbra que en el 2025 se implementarán medidas para facilitar la exportación de gas natural y de petróleo, lo cual aumentaría los ingresos de la nación y ayudaría a que creciera el producto interno bruto. Es preciso considerar que la reducción de las tasas de impuestos que prometió el gobierno podría impactar, como tiende a ocurrir, la productividad y la cantidad de dinero en circulación.
Habrá oportunidades para el sector de manufactura tecnológica tras la aprobación del CHIPS Act, cuya finalidad es incentivar la creación de empleo en ese rubro y generar mayores retornos a través de unos fondos, de los cuales solo el 5% ha sido utilizado.
“Esto quiere decir que falta emplear el 95% de los recursos aprobados para impulsar más manufactura hacia los Estados Unidos, es decir, todo lo que tiene que ver con innovación y ciencias nuevas”.
Por lo anterior, se podría pensar que tendremos en el 2025 una economía de crecimiento sostenible, cuya trayectoria no será alterada según el mercado bursátil que analiza los resultados de las empresas más grandes de Estados Unidos. “Yo soy de esa escuela de pensamiento”, concluye el director general de Greenholder Corporation.
A shift in MIGRATION POLICIES under the new administration

2025 will be a year of important changes regarding immigration in the country, as that was the main campaign subject of President-elect Donald Trump. After his resounding victory and now having absolute control with a Republican majority in both chambers of Congress, a radical and expeditious approach is expected.
Changes have already been seen so far this year under the outgoing administration of Joe Biden. On Jan. 10, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to 937,000 citizens of El Salvador, Ukraine, Sudan and Venezuela, who would have an additional 18 months of immigration protection under the program.
The move is significant as Trump takes office, because it allows citizens of those countries who currently have such status to renew their work permits and deportation protections before the president-elect restricts the program and fulfills his promise of mass deportations.
The promised deportations would be done in an expedited manner. “These processes usually take many years, but Trump in his second term will have a directive to speed them up,” explains immigration attorney, Luis Victoria.
According to the professional, that same strategy would be applied to process people who are in detention centers or who are going to cross irregularly through Mexico’s border, which by the way is very likely to be closed and militarized.
“President Joe Biden let millions of people enter without documents and of those millions, many of them were criminals who committed highly striking crimes and that is one of the things that Trump used in his favor by telling the constituency ‘Do you want this to continue? Do you want them to continue killing people and stealing
your belongings?’” says the attorney about the grounding argument behind the new immigration position.
The deportation goal is ambitious: 11 million people in the next 4 years, which many say will be impossible to achieve.
“There are approximately 5 and a half million processes gathered at immigration courts for approximately 650 judges; each judge would have around 5,000 cases under their belt, meaning it would be literally impossible to do it so quickly,” the lawyer said.
Meanwhile, hopes are pinned on the socalled “border czar” of President-elect Tom Homan, who has extensive evidence on how to conduct mass deportations.
As for the order of priority for deportations, it would be as follows: individuals who have already received a deportation order, those deported in absentia, those who committed felonies, people who entered the country without documents, and finally, individuals who, despite having entered legally, misused their nonimmigrant status by staying longer than allowed.
As good news, the border czar stated that in cases of families with mixed immigration status, if one member receives a deportation order, the others must also follow along to avoid the separations that occurred in the past.
ASYLUM, ADJUSTMENT OF STATUS AND STATE POLICY
Other immigration changes will be related to asylum processes. “Trump would be implementing an executive order that leads to a state of exception justified by uncontrolled irregular immigration. Through this policy, he would be taking exceptional measures that would affect those who request asylum,” says Victoria.
The most relevant one is that asylum seekers would have to first make a request
to a third country other than the United States. For example, a Venezuelan who lives in Colombia and suffers persecution in that country should ask for asylum in Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico or any other nation before doing so here.
On the other hand, the standards to prove that a person needs asylum will be tightened. This means that in many instances it will not be enough for the applicant to recount the persecution or the harm to which they have been subjected to, but they will need to provide additional evidence. Those who are already in the process of applying for asylum could be affected in that their cases would be evaluated more strictly and under new parameters.
Regarding adjustment of status processes, the biggest change is that applicants would undergo an interview, something that Joe Biden had eliminated in some cases in order to expedite pending cases.
And how will Florida be affected? According to statements made by Governor Ron DeSantis, his administration is preparing to get in line with the upcoming federal policies. In fact, he has already called for a special legislative session on Jan.27 to address this issue, and there are intentions to allocate state funds to support the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Given the projected changes, the best advice is that if you are in the middle of an immigration process, always have at hand a photocopy of your ID document, supporting documentation of the ongoing procedures, and your passport. In addition, seek legal representation from a lawyer and not from a document preparer to assert your rights and avoid falling prey to scams.
Un giro a las POLÍTICAS MIGRATORIAS bajo la nueva administración

El 2025 será un año de cambios importantes en lo que respecta a la inmigración en el país, pues ese fue el tema principal de campaña del presidente electo Donald Trump. Tras haber obtenido una victoria contundente y teniendo ahora control absoluto con mayoría republicana en las dos cámaras del congreso, se espera un enfoque radical y expedito.
Los cambios ya se han hecho ver en lo que va del año de la mano de la saliente administración de Joe Biden. El pasado 10 de enero, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional anunció que extendería el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés) a 937.000 ciudadanos de El Salvador, Ucrania, Sudan y Venezuela, quienes tendrían 18 meses adicionales de protección migratoria bajo el programa.
La movida es trascendente a ad-portas de que Trump tome posesión de su cargo porque permite a los ciudadanos de esos países que tienen actualmente dicho estatus renovar sus permisos de trabajo y protecciones de deportación antes de que el electo presidente restrinja el programa y cumpla su promesa de realizar deportaciones masivas.
Dichas deportaciones se harían de forma expedita. “Estos procesos regularmente toman muchos años pero Trump en su segundo mandato va a tener una directriz para acelerarlos”, explica Luis Victoria, abogado de inmigración.
De acuerdo con el profesional, esa misma política migratoria sería aplicada en los procesos de las personas que estén en los centros de detención o que vayan a pasar irregularmente por la frontera con México que dicho sea de paso es muy posible que sea cerrada y militarizada.
“El presidente Joe Biden dejó entrar a millones de personas sin documentos y de esos millones ingresaron muchos criminales que cometieron delitos muy llamativos y esa es una de las cosas que Trump aprovechó para llamar al electorado y decirle ‘¿usted
quiere que siga esto?, ¿qué sigan matando gente y le roben sus pertenencias?’”, dice el abogado sobre la razón de base que explica la nueva posición migratoria.
La meta de deportaciones es ambiciosa: 11 millones de personas en los próximos 4 años, lo cual muchos dicen será imposible de lograr. “Hay aproximadamente 5 millones y medio de procesos acumulados en las cortes de inmigración para aproximadamente 650 jueces. Es decir, cada juez tendría alrededor de 5 mil casos a su cargo, o sea que sería literalmente imposible hacerlo tan rápido”, comenta el abogado.
Mientras tanto, las esperanzas están depositadas en el denominado “zar de la frontera” del presidente electo, Tom Homan, que cuenta con amplia evidencia sobre cómo realizar deportaciones masivas.
En cuanto al orden de prioridad en las deportaciones, sería el siguiente: individuos que ya han recibido orden de deportación, deportados en ausencia, quienes cometieron crímenes agravados, los que entraron al país sin documentos y, por último, aquellos que a pesar de haber ingresado legalmente hicieron un mal uso de su estatus de no inmigrante al quedarse más tiempo del permitido.
Como buena noticia, el zar de la frontera declaró que en los casos de familias con estatus migratorio mixto, si alguno de los miembros recibe orden de deportación, los demás también deberán salir del país para evitar las separaciones que ocurrieron en el pasado.
ASILO, AJUSTE DE ESTATUS Y POLÍTICA ESTATAL
Otros cambios migratorios estarán relacionados con los procesos de asilo. “Trump estaría implementando una orden ejecutiva que conduzca a que haya un estado de excepción justificado por una inmigración irregular desenfrenada. Por medio de esa política, el estaría tomando medidas excepcionales que afectarían a
quienes soliciten asilo”, afirma Victoria. La más relevante es que quienes deseen solicitar asilo tendrían de manera obligada que acudir primero a un tercer país diferente a Estados Unidos. Por ejemplo, un venezolano que viva en Colombia y sufra persecución en ese país deberá solicitar asilo en Panamá, Costa Rica, México o cualquier otra nación antes de hacerlo aquí.
Por otra parte, se endurecerán los estándares para probar que una persona necesita asilo. Esto significa que en muchos casos no bastará con que el solicitante relate la persecución o el daño del que fue objeto sino que tendrá que proporcionar evidencia adicional. Quienes ya estén en medio de un proceso de solicitud de asilo podrían verse impactados en la medida en que sus casos serían evaluados de una forma más estricta y bajo nuevos parámetros.
En cuanto a los procesos de ajuste de estatus, el mayor cambio es que los solicitantes serían sometidos a una entrevista, algo que Joe Biden había eliminado en algunos casos con el fin de agilizar los trámites pendientes.
¿Y cómo nos veremos afectados en Florida? Según declaraciones del gobernador Ron DeSantis, su administración está preparándose para alinearse con las políticas federales que se avecinan. De hecho, ya convocó una sesión legislativa especial para el 27 de enero en la que se abordaría este tema y hay intenciones de asignar fondos estatales para apoyar la deportación de inmigrantes indocumentados.
Ante los cambios que se proyectan, el principal consejo es que si usted está en medio de un proceso de inmigración lleve siempre consigo una fotocopia de su documento de identidad, documentación de soporte de los trámites en curso y su pasaporte. Además, busque representación legal de un abogado y no de un preparador de documentos para hacer valer sus derechos y evitar estafas.

“Although there are many insurance agencies in Florida, ours goes the extra mile: We visit our patients’ homes or work office at their most convenient time even late at night or talk with them over the phone or virtually because we try to be as flexible as possible and reach our patients wherever and whenever they need us and that’s what make us stand out,” says Sandra Ochoa.
Even though their main focus is Medicare, they also work with Obamacare, life, family and group insurances. For the latter, they deal directly with business owners interested in offering health insurance to their employees. Their goal is to tailor the available options for diverse needs and circumstances.
YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH INSURANCE ASSISTANT
Whenever a potential patient approaches them, they make sure to ask all the right questions in order to connect them with the insurance that best fits their needs considering their age, income and medical background.
“The first thing we inquire about is age. Based on that, we know if the person is eligible for Medicare or regular medical insurance. If an individual qualifies for Medicare, we don’t stop there as our aspiration is that the patient gets the most coverage by combining that policy with a health insurance that addresses 100% of their needs,” Sandra explains.
To do so, brokers ask relevant questions like what medicine they are taking or what specialists they need to visit. Based on that information, brokers then can match them with one of the 18 health insurance companies in Florida that Vemax represents.
Those that don’t qualify for Medicare also make up a portion of their customers. Since they qualify for what is known as the Health Insurance Marketplace, their insurance plan would be based on their income or estimated annual earnings.
In these cases, Vemax brokers have also proved themselves to be useful. “Let’s say a mother no longer has a dual income because she got divorced. We assist her in determining what insurance plan has the best premium for her and give her a quote; we can help her see which of the different health plans will cover her and her children the most.”
But brokers do much more than just providing a quote, since they even call the specialists the patient needs, the ones they are already seeing and/or the ones they are seeking, to check if they accept the health insurance the company is recommending.
They also verify if the insurance covers the medications already taken by the patient and if that’s not the case, the broker seeks another health plan that does include them. After a plan is selected, brokers enroll the patient and by the next month it becomes effective.
And their work doesn’t end there as they also find additional benefits patients may qualify for such as Medicaid, food stamps or aid with utilities bills. If they are eligible for any benefit, the agency provides assistance in completing the application process.
The relationship patient/broker extends when the latter continues to monitor everything is up to the standard. Brokers typically double check with the patient that the insurance card arrives home, while they also make themselves reachable to solve any issue the patient may have like a prescription change the insurance doesn’t cover.
They also educate them, because most patients have never received a detailed explanation of how their insurance works and that can create a lot of confusion. But when they receive an educational session on what exactly their health insurance covers and how it works, they feel at ease.
Now, the agency wants to help more people as they grow as a company. Their plan for this year is to add 50 to 55 brokers and expand their operations to Jacksonville and Tallahassee, and possibly other states such as Texas and Georgia by next year.
“We started with five brokers, and they have helped us attract organically more brokers that have joined our team. Our goal is to make our brokers successful, and we have delivered. Another sign that the company is going forward is our patient satisfaction evidenced in the more than 98% retention rate we hold.”
TAX TIPS for Filing Your 2024 Return
Here are some tips to make your life less complicated when getting ready to file your 2024 tax return.
• Pay attention to all your Form 1099-Bs Look through your 1099-Bs immediately after receiving them, paying special attention to the basis code. Brokerage firms may also send you a corrected Form 1099-B in February or March, so also be on the lookout for these even if you’ve already filed your 2024 tax return.
• Sum up your transactions. If you have a ton of transactions, try to sum them up or organize them on a spreadsheet. Having your transactions gathered in one place will make it easy to transfer all this information onto your 2024 tax return. Looking through your transactions is also a great way to reconcile your recordkeeping with your bank’s or brokerage firm’s list of transactions.
• Be on the lookout for Form 1099-Ks. Rules
about which taxpayers should receive a Form 1099-K have been different the past several years. For the 2024 tax year, you should receive a 1099-K from each electronic payment processor with whom you’ve received more than $2,500. There’s still a chance, though, that you could still receive a 1099-K that needs reported on your tax return even if you didn’t eclipse the $2,500 threshold.
• You may owe taxes on interest income. If you took advantage of higher interest rate savings accounts or certificates of deposits (CDs), you could receive a Form 1099-INT for the interest income you earned. For CDs with a maturity date of longer than one year, you must report interest income for the year the interest was earned even if you didn’t receive any cash.
• Keep great donation records. Cash contributions under $250 require a bank record like a canceled check, credit card
record or a receipt from the charity. For larger donations, a receipt from the charity must be obtained before filing your return. Donations of property should include a photo, a receipt from the charity and a detailed listing of the items donated that are in good or better condition.
• Review your child’s income. Your child may be required to file a 2024 income tax return. A 2024 return is generally required if your child has earned more than $14,600, or has investment income such as dividends, interest, or capital gains that total more than $1,300.
• Calculate your estimated tax if you need to extend. If you file an extension, you’ll still need to do a quick calculation to estimate your 2024 tax liability. If you still owe Uncle Sam any money, you’ll need to write a check by April 15. Remember, filing an extension gives you additional time to FILE your tax return, but not to PAY the taxes you owe.

Un proyecto que marcará un antes y un después en Doral, fue aprobado por el Concejo Municipal de esta ciudad. Se trata de la construcción de un nuevo y lujoso condominio bajo la marca Trump, el cual refleja el auge del mercado inmobiliario de lujo en el sur de la Florida.
De acuerdo a las cifras manejadas por la Asociación de Realtors de Miami, las ventas de propiedades de lujo aumentaron en un 12% durante el 2024 y esto parece haber sido tomando en cuenta por los desarrolladores de Trump que se aventuran a construir un total de cuatro torres de 20 pisos de altura con espacio para comercios, restaurantes y 1,498 residencias con opciones desde una habitación hasta cuatro y con un precio que comenzará en los 2 millones de dólares por apartamento.
Este será el primer complejo nuevo de condominios en venta activa en el sur de la Florida con la marca de un presidente en funciones y se erigirá sobre los terrenos del resort de golf Trump National Doral que comprenden de 56 acres por la avenida 87 del NW y 44 calle. Las torres tendrán una altura de 210 pies que ya fue aprobada por la Administración de Aviación Federal y no interferirán con el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami.
Una sociedad de responsabilidad limitada llamada Trump Endeavor 12 LLC, cuyo director es Donald Trump Jr. y que cotiza en bolsa de valores, es la dueña de este ambicioso, moderno y lujoso proyecto que esperar albergar a unos 4 mil 975 residentes y que tendrá por nombre Trump Doral International Towers. De acuerdo a lo aprobado por la Ciudad de Doral, habrá 1,498 unidades residenciales que van desde apartamentos de un dormitorio de 885 pies cuadrados hasta unidades de 5 mil pies cuadrados con cuatro habitaciones. Trump Doral International Towers también incluirá 20 villas de tres a cuatro cuartos, todas con terrazas en la azotea, de tendrán un poco más de 3 mil pies cuadrados.
El desarrollo contará, además, con 141 mil 694 pies cuadrados de espacios comerciales, un total de 3 mil 522 puestos de estacionamiento, 400 unidades de hotel y cerca de 37 acres de parque abierto y espacios recreativos, incluyendo senderos para bicicletas, camineras, canchas de tenis, piscinas, gimnasios de última generación, restaurantes gourmet y servicios personalizados para garantizar el mayor confort posible.
La arquitectura estará a cargo de una reconocida firma internacional, prometiendo un diseño contemporáneo que se integrará con los paisajes de la zona. Igualmente, los desarrolladores han asegurado que incluirán tecnologías sostenibles y sistemas de eficiencia energética, características que se han vuelto indispensable en proyectos de alto nivel.
La alcaldesa de la ciudad de Doral, Christi Fraga, quien, inicialmente, mostró preocupación por el impacto que podría tener un proyecto de esa magnitud, en aspectos como el tráfico y los servicios públicos, manifestó que decidió aprobarlo porque la organización Trump hizo ajustes significativos, como la reducción del número de las unidades de condominio y aseguraron que las áreas verdes serían protegidas.
Fraga señalo que el trabajo del Concejo Municipal es garantizar un crecimiento responsable y controlado, sin que esto implique detener los avances en una ciudad tan joven como Doral, por lo que se están asegurando de que lo que se vaya a construir sea un producto
de calidad que impacte positivamente el área. Añadió que se trata de propiedades de alto valor que incrementan el ingreso de la ciudad. La construcción del condominio de Trump traerá consigo una serie de beneficios económicos para la ciudad de Doral. En primer lugar, se espera que el proyecto genere cientos de empleos durante la fase de construcción, beneficiando a contratistas, ingenieros, arquitectos y trabajadores del sector. Una vez terminado, las operaciones del complejo también crearán empleos permanentes en áreas como administración, seguridad, limpieza y servicios de lujo.

Attention all juniors! It’s COLLEGE TIME!

January is the month that high school juniors should start seriously planning their college steps. They are halfway through the academic year; they have enough math to take standardized tests; and college applications open in less than eight months. As juniors wrap up the first semester, college prep can begin in earnest so that senior year is not so stressful.
If juniors can get their standardized testing out of the way before senior year, then the focus can be on college applications and essays instead of test prep! The SAT, for example, offers a test date in March. Juniors can take the exam as early as March with several more opportunities before senior year starts in late August. The test should be taken approximately three times. Having at least two test scores allows the student to have a solid list of colleges based on average scores listed by the university for acceptance.
With the help of test scores, a Junior can now finalize their college list. Juniors should have a list of less than a dozen colleges that they want to apply to. The list should include schools that
are easy to get into, challenging, and in between. This means that schools should have been researched and visited during the first three years of high school. Using the list, a student can create a chart of needed GPA and test scores per school to confirm the school is attainable – or the student now needs to set some goals! Over the summer, the list can be updated with specific college deadlines as they are announced.
Most college scholarships are for high school seniors, but as a junior, a student can start researching to create a list of scholarships for the upcoming year. If the student knows that on March 1st a scholarship opens up- then put it on the calendar! Students can prepare scholarship essays or recommendation letters ahead of time. There are many search engines to find scholarships so a student can create a timeline of when to start and submit applications.
The Common Application asks for a 650-word essay. Students can start working on the essay early so they have time to think and craft a good one. This also allows English teachers time to review the essays now that seniors are done with
their applications. There are also supplemental essays which are shorter but just as important. All essays can be prepared ahead of time to have a well-written document as well as a finished document.
Juniors need to get the best grades possible. When college applications open on August 1st, right before classes start, the GPA that will be reported is the one earned through the end of junior year. The senior year GPA will be updated at the end of January and that will be looked at by colleges, but decisions will be made based on the Junior year GPA.
If a student starts taking the right steps midway during junior year, they can get everything lined up so that on August 1st, they are ready to fill in applications and submit them. Plus, having things prepared beforehand will allow for less stress and more enjoyment of all the senior year festivities. A last-minute rush will not produce the best application- so starting in January of junior year will lead to a finish by Thanksgiving of senior year!

Some time ago, the Latino Center on Aging organized an outstanding II Inter-American Conference on Aging. To foster broad and meaningful participation, this event was held in several locations, including Monterrey, Mexico; San José, Costa Rica; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and La Plata, Argentina. In La Plata—a city renowned for its beauty and academic vibrancy—the exemplary work of its mayor stood out.
Despite limited resources, this municipal leader provided strong support to community groups for older adults. Under his leadership, activities such as folk dance clubs, theater groups, and musical orchestras were organized. These initiatives not only enhanced the well-being of older adults but also garnered massive support for the mayor’s administration, securing his reelection almost automatically due to his commitment to this population.
A LESSON FOR SOUTH FLORIDA
We share this experience because it underscores an important truth: older adults can be a powerful force for change, particularly in local elections. In South Florida, elected representatives could greatly benefit from paying more attention to this age group. The data is clear: in the most recent election, 644,000 voters were aged 55 and older, compared to 414,000 voters between the ages of 18 and 35.
Despite this notable participation, organizations serving older adults often experience extensive waiting times for services and significant shortcomings, particularly in delivering bilingual information to the growing population of Hispanic older adults. This persistent gap in addressing the specific needs of this community highlights an urgent call to action for both leaders and voters.
It’s time for older adults to exercise their power at the ballot box more strategically. Being informed about the candidates and supporting those committed to addressing aging-related issues is crucial to ensuring a future where local services are more responsive and accessible.
THE IMPORTANCE OF AN INFORMED VOTE
Just as the mayor of La Plata transformed his city through inclusive activities and community support, South Florida’s representatives have an opportunity to earn the backing of a population that, with their vote, can make a crucial difference. Active and conscious participation in the electoral process is the most powerful tool to drive necessary change and build a community where older adults can age with dignity, support, and opportunity. The time to act is now, and the power is in your hands.
