10 years ago, the senior class of RRDSH were only in 2nd grade. They did not understand why suddenly, their parents desperately went to school to pick them, nobody wanted to talk and panic gripped the silence. Televisions everywhere showed the first images of terror, the warning that President Bush was in Florida increased despair in Florida citizens. The country was transformed that day : 2977 innocent lives were lost deliberately , at the hands of terrorists, many firefighters, paramedics and police officers died trying to save lives, giving hers in return. The 9 / 11 had a before and an after: flying in a airplane stopped being fun, the feeling of insecurity grew and deep wounds were set into the souls of thousands of Americans.

It is impossible not to recall much sacrifice and sorrow. In every school, college, agency, etc., in every corner of the country, people offered prayers, moments of silence, singing and crying, everywhere hearts were consumed with deep emotion.

In the only public high school in Doral, RRDSH, upper reaches its peak: administrators, teachers, and students joined PTSA and deep meditation to honor the victims of that fateful day. Isabella Maria Paez, President of Student Government gave the welcome guests of honor of policemen and firemen, called “First Responders “.

The Boy Scout Troop 552 performed the Presentation of Colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was in the hands of Alejandro Moreno, President of the Class 2012 and several students addressed the audience with emotional messages.

Symphony Orchestra and Choir School sang hymns and heartfelt melodies.

Hundreds of flowers adorned the stage where flags flew accompanying the plaque. Every participant experienced silence, respect, love of country and recognition. The heartfelt words of Principal, Dr. Jacques Bentolila, closed the event with profound respect, he stressed that history no matter how cruel teaches us the error of our ways and how to never repeat the same mistakes and that the best way to honor victims and so many heroes, is to never forget their sacrifice.

Speaking as a father, husband, son and brother of “First Responder” reiterated the importance of always telling our loved ones, as we love them. “One can never predict a tragedy, so say goodbye with love every day is so valuable.....”

9/11 Tenth Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony

Nos reunimos hoy para conmemorar las vidas de los caídos durante los ataques de septiembre 11 del 2001. Rendimos homenaje a los valientes esfuerzos de los socorristas en todo el nación, así como aquellos que perdieron sus vidas ese infame día

Hace 10 años los estudiantes seniors de la escuela apenas se iniciaban en el 2do grado. No entendían por que de pronto desesperados los padres iban a la escuela a retirarlos, nadie quería hablar y el pánico se apoderaba del silencio. Se encendian los televisores y en forma atónica se mostraron las primeras imagines del terror, el aviso que el Presidente Bush estaba en la Florida aumento la desesperación. El país se transformo, ese día, vidas inocentes perecieron en manos de terroristas, muchos bomberos paramédicos y policías murieron tratando de salvar vidas, dando las suyas a cambio. El 9/11 tuvo un antes y un después , viajar en avión dejo de ser divertido, la sensación de inseguridad creció y heridas muy profundas se fijaron en el alma de miles de norteamericanos.

Es imposible no recordar tanto sacrificio y tanto dolor. En cada escuela, instituto, organismo, etc., en cada esquina del país se ofrecieron oraciones, minutos de silencio, cantos y llantos, en todos lados se abrazaron los corazones con profunda emoción.

En la única escuela publica superior del Doral el civismo alcanzo su máxima expresión: Administradores, maestros, PTSA y estudiantes se unieron y con profundo recogimiento honraron a las victimas de ese fatídico día. María Isabella Páez, Presidente del Student Govermment dio al bienvenida a los invitados principales: policías y bomberos, los llamados “First Responders (primeros en responder )”… La presentación de la bandera la realizo la Tropa 552 de los Boy Scouts, el juramento de fidelidad estuvo en manos de Alejandro Moreno, Presidente de la Clase 2012 y varios estudiantes se dirigieron a la audiencia con emotivos mensajes. La Orquesta Sinfónica y el Coro de la escuela entonaron himnos y sentidas melodías. Cientos de flores adornaron el estrado en donde ondeaba las banderas acompañando a la placa recordatoria. Silencio, respeto, amor a la patria y reconocimiento, ese fue el sentir de cada uno de los participantes. La sinceras palabras del Director de la escuela, Dr. Jacques Bentolila, cerraron el evento, con profundo respeto, recalcó que la historia enseña a no equivocarse nuevamente y que la mejor forma de honrar a tantas victimas y tanto héroes, es nunca olvidar su sacrificio. Hablando como padre, esposo, hijo y hermano de “First Responder” reiteró la importancia de siempre decirle a nuestros seres queridos cuanto los amamos. Uno nunca puede predecir una tragedia, por eso despedirse con amor cada día es tan valioso…..

State Representative presents check to the City

he State Representative, Jeanette Nuñez, presented the City of Doral with a check of 988,000.00 dollars, donation of the State for the “JC Bermudez Irrigation Project,” which targets a system to irrigate the lands of the City with water from alternated sources, such as storm waters.

The ambitious project has come to save the city huge amounts of money regarding the distribution of water, irrigating the lands of the park with storm waters saved and redirected, putting less strain on the water supply of the City.

After acknowledging the project has fulfilled all the requirements, the State Representative addressed the audience and the Council. “It is my honor to present this check to you all, and support a commitment that you all had started for the, probably, the greenest city of all Florida”, were the words used by Jeanette before officially show the sizable check to the members of Doral Council. “It’s a city that we all enjoy. I think that you have done a phenomenal job…”

At first Jeanette was introduced to the audience by Mayor J.C. Bermudez, reminding everybody that, the now State Representative has been a long time friend, very active, and her children still play for numerous basketball teams of the City. Then, as she stated… “I am glad to be part of it”, referring to the visible development of the City of Doral over other cities of the State and the country, not just was being just, but talking from the heart.

“It’s not often that we receive a check for almost a million dollars from Tallahassee”, said Mayor Bermudez, and continued “We are all committed to have an ecological green City”. The Mayor thanked Representative Nuñez for the great job she had done since she went to the Capital of the State, and remarked how lucky we are to have Jeanette as our Representative.

Representante Estatal presenta cheque a la Ciudad

a Representante del Estado Jeannette Nuñez, presentó a la Ciudad del Doral un cheque por la suma de 988,000.00 dólares durante el último encuentro de los Concejales de la Ciudad. El cheque es una donación del Estado de la Florida para el “Proyecto de Irrigación JC Bermudez,” que implementa la irrigación de tierras de la Ciudad con aguas de procedencia alternativa, tales como aguas procedentes de las tormentas. El ambicioso proyecto le ha ahorrado a la ciudad grandes cantidades de dinero por concepto de reparto de agua, irrigando con agua acumulada y redirigida de las tormentas, las tierras del parque, poniendo de esa manera menos carga sobre el suministro de la Ciudad.

Luego de reconocer que el proyecto había cumplido con todos los requerimientos, la Representante del Estado se dirigió a la audiencia y los concejales. “Es mi honor presentarles este cheque, y apoyar el compromiso que primero ustedes asumieron para convertir esta ciudad en, probablemente, la más verde de la Florida”, fueron las palabras usadas por Jeanette antes de, oficialmente presentar el cheque a los Concejales de la Ciudad. “Es una ciudad de la que todos disfrutamos. Pienso que ha hecho un trabajo fenomenal”.

Primeramente, Jeannette fue presentada a la audiencia por el Alcalde J.C. Bermudez, recordando que la ahora Representante del Estado ha sido amiga por muchos años, muy activa en la ciudad, y que sus hijos aún siguen jugando para nuestros equipos de basketball. Luego, como ella dijera “Estoy contenta de ser parte en esto”, refiriéndose al visible desarrollo que ha tenido la Ciudad del Doral con respecto a otras ciudades del estado y del país, no sólo hablaba con justeza, sino también desde el corazón.

“No es usual recibir un cheque de casi un millón de dólares de Tallase”, dijo el Alcalde Bermudez y continuó “Es de todos el compromiso de tener una ciudad ecológicamente verde”. El Alcalde también agradeció a la Representante Nuñez por su labor desde que se fue a la Capital del Estado, y recalcó que somos muy afortunados al tener a Jeannette Nuñez como nuestra Representante.

City’s Agreement with vendor under scope

uring the meeting of the Council of Doral City last September 14, 2011, some issues came to controversy and deep discussion. One of them was the contract held by the City with Martin Outdoor Media, Inc., to provide for the city the implementation of the “Bus Passenger Bench Program.” The program was conceived as part of the Transportation Master Plan for 2010, to provide more appealing and comfortable sites for bus stops in designated areas where boarding passengers exceeded five.

The contract was awarded to Martin Outdoor Media, a company of, basically, street furniture (as they define themselves in their website) in existence since 1999. The contract included the placement of 144 benches in different locations of the City by March 1, 2010.

At the beginning of the discussion, contract was declared in breach, termination was in place as well as seeking for a new vendor to comply with the terms of said contract. Now, under the blurred light of information that about 80% of the agreed number was completed, Council determined to extend a grace period until the next meeting, for the company to present all the required permits. But the real numbers soon jumped to the stage. According to those provided by Eric Carpenter, Public Works Director, out of the original 144, only 135 benches had permit and yet, only 36 were actually under compliance. That brings the point. Almost a year and a half late for deadline only 36 benches were installed in compliance with regulations. Questions about inspectors inspecting the placements beforehand sure rose. And of course, there were inspectors marking the right placements in accordance with the terms of the contract. At this point, the contract was called by Mr. Carpenter a revenue sink instead of a revenue gain for the city.

“We do want to continue to work with the City”, said Scott Martin from Martin Outdoor Media. “We want to have the correct audits done, we want to pay for the extra concrete… This City is very important to us”, asseverations made by Mr. Martin while the situation was sweeping out of hands.

Why is it then they have only sent to the city a management letter, a review, instead of the so wanted audit in compliance with the contract? Why is it then that, if in accord with Mr. Carpenter’s words inspectors were send to mark the exact placement of the benches there are only 36 complying with regulations? Simple math tells us there will be 74 benches in need to be moved. Does not that raise the cost of the project? Martin Outdoor offered to pay for it, but is that enough? On the other hand, when questioned, Mr. Carpenter agreed that permit approval had been being granted upon basic drawing, approximated location of the benches, and in groups of 20 or 30 locations at a time to expedite the process.

Under new lights, Council determined that Martin Outdoor Media, Inc. will have 28 days to comply with permits, and some other required paperwork they haven’t to date. The brief disagreement about the short period given was rapidly terminated by Vice-Mayor Michael DiPietro, when clarifying that original terms of contract were fixed for March 1, 2010.

urante el pasado encuentro de Concejales de la Ciudad del Doral el Septiembre 14, algunos temas levantaron controversias y discusiones profundas. Uno de esos temas fue el contrato que mantiene la ciudad con Martin Outdoor Media, Inc., para proveer por la implementación del “Programa para Bancos de Pasajeros de Ómnibus.” El programa fue concebido como parte del “Plan Maestro de Transporte para 2010,” para proveer -valga la redundancia- sitios de paradas de ómnibus más acogedores y confortables en áreas designadas, donde el número de pasajeros fuera mayor de cinco. El contrato fue otorgado a Martin Outdoor Media, Inc., compañía dedicada básicamente -y según se definen a sí mismos en su sitio web- a muebles urbanos, y que existe desde 1999. Dicho contrato incluía el emplazamiento para Marzo 1 del 2010, de 144 bancas en diferentes lugares de la Ciudad.

Al presentarse el tema, el contrato fue declarado roto, la anulación demandada al igual que la búsqueda de otro contratista que se adviniera a los términos de dicho contrato. Ahora, bajo la pobre luz de la información que se manejaba, cerca del 80% de lo acordado por contrato había sido completado, por lo que los Concejales determinaron extender un período de gracia hasta el próximo encuentro, para que la compañía presentara todos los permisos y enmiendas requeridas.

Pero los números reales pronto saltaron a la palestra. De acuerdo a los proveídos por Eric Carpenter, Director de Trabajos Públicos de la Ciudad, y cerca de un año y medio más tarde de lo estipulado en el contrato, del total de 144 bancas sólo 135 ostentaban permiso y aún así, de las 110 que corresponden a más o menos el 80% comentado, únicamente 36 bancas cumplían con las regulaciones listadas en el contrato. Preguntas acerca de inspectores inspeccionando el trabajo de antemano, de seguro aparecieron. Claro que hubo inspectores marcando el emplazamiento correcto. Para este momento, el contrato habría sido llamado por Mr. Carpenter un hundimiento financiero para la ciudad, en vez de ganancia financiera.

“Queremos seguir trabajando para la ciudad”, dijo Scott Martin de Martin Outdoor Media. “Queremos que las auditorias correctas se realicen, queremos pagar por el concreto adicional… esta ciudad es muy importante para nosotros”, fueron las aseveraciones hechas por el Sr. Martin mientras la situación se escabullía de las manos. ¿Por qué razón entonces, en vez de las auditorias requeridas, hasta el momento sólo una carta administrativa, una revisión, ha sido enviada a la Ciudad? ¿Cuál es la razón por la que, si de acuerdo con las palabras del Sr. Carpenter, inspectores marcaron las locaciones exactas para las bancas, sólo 36 de las ya instaladas cumplen con los requerimientos del contrato? Matemática básica nos dice que 74 bancas tendrán que ser movidas de lugar. ¿No eleva esto el costo del proyecto? Martin Outdoor se ofreció a cubrir los gastos extras pero ¿Es suficiente?

Por otra parte, cuando fue cuestionado al respecto, el Sr. Carpenter admitió que las aprobaciones de permisos estuvieron siendo otorgadas sobre la base de dibujos básicos y en grupos de 20 ó 30, para agilizar el proceso.

Bajo una nueva luz, los Concejales determinaron que Martin Outdoor Media, Inc., tendría 28 días para acomodar permisos y otros procesos legales que aún no tienen. Un breve desacuerdo por la prontitud de la fecha fue de plano, resuelto por el Vice-Alcalde Michael DiPietro, dejando muy en claro que el término del contrato original había sido establecido para Marzo 1 del 2010.

Cabrera: “The employees from the city shouldn’t postulate as City officials”

lgid and controversial, the motion presented by Councilman Pete Cabrera, sure did raise animosity the night of September 14.

Put in plain language, Mr. Cabrera’s proposal prohibit city employees from running for an effective office. What does this means? For a city employee to run for Council, Mayor or any other office in the City, he or she would have to submit a resignation for their current position after legally register the candidacy. Councilman Cabrera supported with facts such as that of some other cities having the same or a similar ordinance. Cities like Miami Beach have adopted similar provisions while others like City of Miami, allows the employee to take Leave of Absence during the process. “The problem with City of Doral of doing that (allowing for LOA) is that we are not such a large city, therefore we will be leaving a vacant position for a long period of time”, Councilman Cabrera explained.

The motion itself makes sense, but not to be approved at the moment. Councilman Luigi Boria seconded the motion, but pointing to a good correction to be made: The effective date should be noted as for the next Qualifying Date and not for the Registering Date. And there is a very good reason for the correction; one of the City’s employees did already register her candidacy to run for an office.

Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez expressed: “I think the ordinance has a good intention, but I sense that Councilman Cabrera’s proposal at this time is targeting a particular employee. That’s not fair, although that person needs to be careful on how she expended time campaigning”, Councilwoman was obviously remarking the fact that no campaign should be made during working hours.

“I will support the ordinance as long as the effective date is moved to July 2012, or even after, but I don’t think that as of right now it should be effective”, end up saying. “We have rules and regulations in place regarding these matters”, Mayor Bermudez commented.

“I think that the spirit of the ordinance is valid, except that it loses some integrity because of the situation involved: Number one, we have an employee currently running and Mr. Cabrera brings

this to light after that fact. Not a good move”…

Vice-Mayor Michael DiPietro alleged, “looks very questionable… Number two, the qualifying date brought up by Councilman Boria and Councilwoman Rodriguez is valid, but I still think that it should have not an effective before the next election on November 6, effective date should be November 7, 2012. Not even that, at this point I might support the qualifying date, but we should not change the rules of the game in the middle of the game. I think that the point here is very personal, and I don’t think that is very open and transparent”, Vice-Mayor finished.

Councilman Cabrera regretted to hear such opinions from his fellow Council members, “My motives are to protect the city, and not any one in particular”, he reposted. “ I’m not targeting any one person in particular, I’m targeting an issue, a situation”… Mr. Cabrera mention an email re-

ceived pointing at this fact as a regrettable lack of policy in this area. To this new testimonial, Vice-Mayor DiPietro responded he received the said e-mail too, and he invited the person to meet at the City Hall to discuss the issue, not having any response back to date, discrediting whoever wrote and sent the e-mail in question. Mr. DiPietro went an extra mile making an open request for Mr. Peterson, the person signing the e-mail, to meet either with the whole Council in session, or personally to discuss the item.

Councilman Boria and Councilwoman Rodriguez resent their position seconding the ordinance, before the negative of Mr. Cabrera to amend the motion and include an effective date.

When asked if he agree to the amendment, he responded: “ No, I believe candidacy starts when you file and not when you qualify for it”. Mayor Bermudez agreed with the rest about the feeling of the ordinance right now, but also made his point stating that Qualifying Period will be appropriate to second a motion. “ Philosophically, I do agree with the content of the ordinance, but at this moment it does not feel right unless having an effective date in place”.

Councilman Boria went ahead moving the motion rephrasing the language and including as effective date for the ordinance to be the Qualifying Period, sometime between the second and fourth Tuesday of July, 2012. Also, point well landed by Mr. Boria, it will be very difficult if not impossible for an employee of the city, not to violate the regulations pertaining to his/her position while running a full time campaign after the Qualifying Period.

Said as such, the new motion was seconded by Council.

Cabrera: “Los empleados de la Alcaldía no deben postularse para Oficiales de la Ciudad” Por Carlos Garcia

do, excepto que pierde alguna integridad a causa de la situación en que se mezcla: Número uno, tenemos a un empleado actualmente nominado como candidato y el Sr. Cabrera trae esto a la luz justo después. No es una buena jugada…” alegó el Vice-Alcalde Michael DiPietro. “ Parece muy cuestionable…”, agregó. “Segundo, el día de Calificación mencionado por el Concejal Boria y la Concejal Rodriguez, es válido, aunque pienso que no debería cobrar efectividad hasta después de las elecciones el 6 de Noviembre; el día de efectividad debería ser el 7 de Noviembre del 2012. A pesar de esto, apoyaría la idea del día de Calificación. Pienso además que el punto aquí es muy personal y no deberíamos cambiar las reglas del juego una vez comenzado”, terminó diciendo el Vice-Alcalde.

El Concejal Cabrera lamentó escuchar estas opiniones, “ Mis motivos son aquellos de proteger la ciudad, y no dirigirme a alguien en particular…

No estoy dirigiéndome a nadie en específico, estoy dirigiéndome a un problema, una situación”.

El concejal Cabrera mencionó un e-mail recibido en el que se apuntaba al hecho de no tener en la ciudad una póliza implementada para el caso. A este nuevo testimonio el Vice-Alcalde respondió diciendo que él también había recibido el e-mail y que había invitado a la persona a ir al City Hall a discutir el tema, sin que recibiera respuesta.

DiPietro fue más allá haciendo una petición

abierta al Sr. Peterson, la persona que firmó dicho e-mail, para encontrarse en el momento con los Concejales en sesión, o hacerlo personalmente y en privado en su oficina.

Los Concejales Boria y Rodriguez se negaron esta vez a secundar la ordenanza, ante la negativa del concejal Cabrera para enmendar la moción, incluyendo una fecha de efectividad. Al ser cuestionado respondió: “No, creo que la candidatura comienza el día en que se registra y no el día en que califica”…

El Alcalde Bermudez estuvo de acuerdo con el resto acerca la forma en que se sentía la ordenanza en este momento, pero también hizo valer su punto de vista resumiendo que el Período de Calificación sería buena fecha para la efectividad de la ordenanza. “Filosóficamente estoy de acuerdo con el contenido de la ordenanza, pero en este momento no está bien a no ser que lleve un día de efectividad”…

El Concejal Boria movió la moción, refrescando el lenguaje e incluyendo como fecha de efectividad el Período de Calificación, entre el segundo y el cuarto martes del mes de Julio del 2012. Otro punto bien notado por el concejal Boria fue el hecho de que, a partir de esta fecha sería muy difícil o casi imposible para un candidato, continuar su campaña sin romper los reglamentos que rigen su trabajo. Dicho esto, los Concejales secundaron esta moción.

lgida y controversial, la moción presentada por el Concejal Pete Cabrera, de seguro levantó mucha animosidad en la noche del 14 de Septiembre. Puesto en lenguaje claro, la propuesta del concejal Cabrera prohíbe a los empleados de la ciudad del Doral postularse para oficial de la Ciudad. ¿Qué significa esto? Para que un empleado de la ciudad pueda postularse para cargos como Alcalde, Concejal y otros cargos en la Ciudad, el empleado debe presentar su renuncia al puesto que corrientemente ocupa, después de registrar su candidatura. El Concejal Cabrera avaló esto con hechos tales como otras ciudades teniendo la misma ordenanza o alguna similar.

Ciudades como Miami Beach han adoptado ordenanzas similares y otras como la Ciudad de Miami, permiten a los empleados que se registren como candidatos usar los períodos de ausencia justificada conocidos por Leave of Absence (LOA). “El problema de la Ciudad del Doral para hacer esto (admitir el uso de LOA) es que no somos una ciudad lo suficientemente grande y una ausencia de este tipo dejaría una vacante abierta por mucho tiempo”, explicó el Concejal Cabrera.

A moción como tal tiene sentido, pero no para ser aprobada en el momento. El concejal Luigi Boria secundó la moción, no sin antes notar una muy buena corrección: el día de efectividad de esta ordenanza debía ser fijado para Julio del próximo año, durante el período de Calificación de los candidatos. Y es que existe una muy buena razón para la corrección: uno de los empleados de la Ciudad, ya presentó su candidatura para Concejal.

La Concejal Ana Maria Rodriguez se expresó al respecto: “Pienso que la ordenanza tiene una buena intención, pero siento que la propuesta del Concejal Cabrera en estos momentos, está dirigida a un empleado en específico. No es justo, a pesar de que esa persona necesita ser muy cuidadosa con la forma en que emplea el tiempo para hacer campaña”. La Concejal estaba obviamente remarcando la regulación que no permite hacer campañas durante horario de trabajo. “Apoyaré la moción siempre que el día de efectividad se mueva para Julio del 2012, o incluso más tarde, pero no creo que este sea el momento para que se haga efectiva”, terminó diciendo.

T

he last meeting held by the Council of the Doral City saw few motions rejected, some arguments and differences, some approved by unanimity, other disapproved with a split count. And this one was one of the cases when for split opinions won the disapproval.

The motion, second presented by Councilman Pete Cabrera, was about to prohibit candidates to accept moneys and contribution from lobbyists and vendors having relation with the City government.

The ordinance exactly called for the creation of a section of the City Codes prohibiting campaign contributions to city office candidates by city vendors/lobbyists and lobbyists; Providing for severability; Providing for inclusion in the City Codes; and Providing for an effective date.

The first one to take word against was Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez, second by the Mayor and the Vice-Mayor. All of them, in their own words, explained that the reason they were opposing this motion was as simple as fairness can be. “ I believe it is not consistence with the spirit of an open and free democracy…”, Said Mayor J. C. Bermudez. “ I believe that people should be able to see who makes or don’t a contribution and from there, make their own decisions…” and that´s what transparency is all about. Temptation was a word cited, but again, to fall in temptation means no transparency. Whoever gets tempted by a few dollars more, does not deserve to be in office. If people are able to see that a contribution played a good part for decisions made or campaign platforms, is then up to the people to vote that candidate out.

And not just that; as noted by three of the members, the ordinance would have been limiting first, the capacity and right of every citizen to contribute to the campaign of that one person we believe on, and second would have been limiting the financial capacity of some good candidates not having the pocket to support a good campaign. That way, city office will only be for rich people with enough solvencies to support the economical strain of a political campaign.

Councilmen Pete Cabrera and Luigi Boria were the ones voting in favor, while Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez, Vice-Mayor Michael DiPietro, and Mayor J.C. Bermudez voted against the ordinance.

l último encuentro de Concejales de la ciudad del Doral algunas mociones rechazadas, algunas discusiones y diferencias, algunas aprobadas por unanimidad y otras, desaprobadas por voto dividido. Y este fue uno de los casos en que la opinión dividida ganó la desaprobación. La moción, segunda presentada por el Concejal Pete Cabrera, prohibía a los candidatos a puestos en el gobierno a recibir donaciones y dineros de contratistas y cabilderos que tuvieran relación con el gobierno de la Ciudad.

La ordenanza exactamente llamaba a la creación de una sección en los Códigos de la Ciudad, prohibiendo las contribuciones a campañas de candidatos para oficinas del gobierno a cabilderos/contratistas y cabilderos; Proveyendo por separación; Proveyendo por inclusión en los Códigos de la Ciudad; y Proveyendo por una fecha de efectividad.

La primera en tomar palabra en contra fue la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez, secundada por el Alcalde J.C. Bermúdez, y el Vice-Alcalde Michael DiPietro. Todos ellos, con sus propias palabras, explicaron que la razón por la que se oponían a esta moción era tan simple como la justeza pueda ser. “Creo que no es consistente con el espíritu de democracia abierta y libre…” dijo el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, “…creo que la gente debe ser capaz de ver quién hizo o no una contribución y, partiendo de ahí, hacer sus propias decisiones…” Y de eso es de lo que realmente trata la transparencia. “Tentación” fue una palabra citada, pero aún así, caer en tentación significa ausencia de transparencia. Quién sea tentado por algunos dólares más, no merece ocupar uno de estos cargos. Si el pueblo es capaz de ver que una contribución jugó una buena parte en decisiones hechas o plataformas de campañas, está entonces a consideración del pueblo el votar en contra de dicho candidato. Y no sólo esto; tal como anotaron tres de los miembros, la ordenanza estaría limitando primero, la capacidad y el derecho de cada ciudadano de contribuir con la causa de aquella persona en la que creemos y segundo, habría estado limitando la capacidad financiera de algunos buenos candidatos que no tienen la bolsa suficiente para apoyar una buena campaña. De esta manera, las oficinas en la ciudad serían sólo para ricos con la suficiente solvencia como para paliar el desgaste económico de una campaña política.

Los Concejales Luigi Boria y Pete Cabrera votaron a favor, mientras que la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez, el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, y el Vice-Alcalde Michael DiPietro votaron en contra de la ordenanza.

n Tuesday, September 8, 2011, the employees from Home Depot located at 7899 W Flagler and Mr. John Mac Roberts from Oldcastle joined efforts with John I. Smith K-8 Center in a much needed community project. The group spearheaded by Mr. Robert Wilson, Department Manager, volunteered their time by beautifying the school’s butterfly garden.

The team donated mulch and plants in order to create a butterfly friendly environment for both students and staff to enjoy.

This garden serves a vital part of a science unit for the first grade classes in which they learn about the life cycle of butterflies. With increasing budget cutbacks and vocational program closures, this project had pretty much ended with little or no funding. However, thanks to the generosity of these local businesses dedicated to the cause of children’s education, this year the students will be able to have a more meaningful hands on experience than ever.

The Home Depot Team along with Mr. Roberts from Oldcastle worked with students and educators, teaching them about the intricate care of the milkweed plants and how to nurture them. It was a fantastic experience for the students. The group built a great rapport with the students and staff.

The John I. Smith K-8 Center community is grateful to Home Depot and Old Castle for coming together for such an endeavor that is sure to last in the hearts and minds of these young students.”

l Martes 8 de septiembre fue un día muy especial para John Smith K-8 Center, los empleados de la compañía Home Depot, 7899 W Flagler, y el Sr. John Roberts Mac de OldCastle unieron sus esfuerzos para realizar con un proyecto comunitario muy importante.

El grupo encabezado por el Sr. Robert Wilson, gerente de la empresa, arribó a la escuela para trabajar directamente en el embellecimiento del “Jardín de Mariposas”, donando plantas e implementos con el fin de crear un ambiente amigable para el disfrute de los estudiantes y maestros .

Este jardín sirve también como una parte vital de la unidad de ciencias naturales para el primer grado en la que los estudiantes aprenden , entre otras cosas sobre el ciclo de vida de las mariposas. Con el aumento de los recortes presupuestarios y el cierre de muchos programas vocacionales, este proyecto había sido prácticamente eliminado por falta de financiamiento, sin embargo, gracias a la generosidad de estas empresas locales, principalmente avocadas a la educación de los niños y su bienestar, es que se pudo poner en marcha nuevamente.

Al equipo de Home Depot, junto con el Sr. Roberts de Oldcastle se unieron a estudiantes y educadores y entre todos pusieron la obra en marcha . Primero se dio un adiestramiento sobre el cuidado y mantenimiento de las plantas, así como su protección.

Fue una experiencia fantástica para los estudiantes y se puede decir que se afianzaron los lazos entre estos, los generosos benefactores y la comunidad escolar en general . John I. Smith K-8 Center agradece a Home Depot y a Oldcastle, por la gran ayuda y colaboración, gesto que siempre quedará en el corazón de los jóvenes estudiantes de la institución.

his comment sparked much laughter when it was placed on Facebook, but for those who attended the workshop SAFE Thursday September 15 at the Auditorium of the College Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High, it was disturbing and even shocking to hear. That day we learned with extreme harshness that ignorance is the cause of the worst suffering and tragedy.

Aware of this reality of the school authorities in conjunction with the PTSA were given the task of organizing an informative workshop about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol as well as the importance of safety belt use. It was also talk about the distractions of texting and cell phone use, all these hazards that many are aware of but don’t care anyways.

Lt. Vincent Easeviole and Lt. Jimenez both presented the workshop.

Paramedic Miami Dade County Fire Rescue, photos, videos and personal demonstrations supplemented the information provided. The images were so disturbing that only students at least 14 years might be present, the idea was a reality-based presentation that showed 100% real images with the sole purpose of preventing more disasters. And it’s all common sense, which warns you that if you committed the imprudence of using drugs or drinking alcohol, then do not drive, and say no if you’re going to get into the car of someone who is under the influence. Calling your parents or family members is much more intelligent and safe. Bad decisions can destroy not only your life but many others too.

Safety belts were one of the main topics of the presentation. According to Florida law, belt use is mandatory in each of the occupants of the car (front and back); children under 5 years must have their own car seat. Groceries, bottles, bags, handbags, backpacks, and any object not in the

truck, can fly off and injure an occupant during a coalition. In trucks, the networks must ensure the packages. Common sense must prevail to prevent further mishaps.

The reasons for seat belt use in all occupants are mainly 3: 1- In a crash, seat belts prevent you from being ejected from the car (the chances of dying are 25 times more likely, if you are ejected) 2- In a crash seatbelts, distribute the force of the blow 3- In a minor crash, seatbelts help to control the car.

The question is then, why do people decide not wear belts?

Forgetfulness, laziness, inconvenience, haste and ignorance. The physic s laws are very clear, to every action corresponds a reaction,… so why take the risk?

The consequences, death, disability, pain, mental trauma, and so on. We know that 50% of people in this country are paralyzed due to traffic accidents... and that number will increase if people, particularly young people, do not know how to drive safety.

Lt Easeviole gave us an interview: DFJ: What are your expectations today?

Lt. Easeviole: “Hopefully we are going to educated people about dangers of making poor choices, when it comes on drinking and driving, drugs uses or getting in a car when someone else in under DIU, also we are going to talk about the dangers of the distracters drivers and not compliances of seatbelts. We also want to take the people to stage and show them what is going to happen in a crash, what we do as the paramedics, the stabilization in the field, etc”.

DFJ : Why do you think is so important to attend this workshop?

Lt.. Easeviole: “It is important for both, students and parents, so they have basically tools in two boxes, so wherever its comes up, a child can call his parents asking them to pick him up because he cannot drive. They will understand better that this honesty will save a life, his life. This phone call is a 1000 times better than a knock on your door telling your family that an accident happened”.

DFJ: Would you share your statistics?

Lt. Easeviole: “Basically is this country, there is a fatality every 12 minutes, every 5 second a motor vehicle crash, so this is the typically we, as the fire rescues, respond. vehicles crash”.

DFJ: “Tell me something about teens” Lt. Easeviole: “The majority of trauma fatalities are for the age group between 12 -24”.

DFJ: What do you think about a teen having a driving license at 16 or 17?

Lt. Easeviole: “ It is exactly what it is, a driving privilege, so they need get educated, taking programs like this. Obviously, the younger they are, more ricks they will have”.

La pregunta es entonces, ¿por que la gente no quiere usar cinturon? : Olvido, flojera, incomodidad, prisa e ignorancia. Las leyes de la fisica son muy claras, a toda acción corresponde una reacción. ¿Para que arriesgarse?

Conocemos bien las consecuencias; muerte, incapacidad, dolor, traumas mentales, etc. Ya sabemos que el 50% de las personas paralíticas de este país están así por así por accidentes de tráfico…..y ese número va a aumentar si la gente, sobre todos los jóvenes, no saben como manejar seguro.

Antes de la reunión, hablamos con LEUT Vicent Easeviole y nos concedió esta entrevista amablemente: DFJ: ¿Qué vamos a escuchar en charla de hoy y cuales son sus expectativas?

Lt. Easeviole: “Esperemos educar a la gente acerca de los peligros de tomar malas decisiones, cuando se trata de beber y conducir, el uso de drogas o subir a

un coche cuando el conductor esta intoxicado (DIU).

También vamos a hablar acerca de los peligros de los conductores distraídos y el no uso de los cinturones de seguridad. También queremos mostrar lo que puede suceder en un accidente, y lo que hacemos los paramédicos, la estabilización en el campo,etc.

DFJ :¿Por qué cree usted que es tan importante para asistir a este taller?

Lt. Easeviole: “Es importante para ambos, estudiantes y padres de familia, ya que se ven los dos puntos de vista. Así un hijo puede decidir llamar a sus padres pidiéndoles que lo recojan de una fiesta, antes de manejar intoxicado. Ellos entenderán mejor que esta honestidad salva una vida… su vida! Esta llamada telefónica es 100 veces mejor que la tristeza que le toquen la puerta de la casa en la madrugada avisando de un accidente DFJ: ¿Compartiría sus estadísticas?

Lt. Easeviole: “Básicamente es este país, hay una muerte cada 12 minutos, cada 5 segundos sucede un accidente automovilístico, como primeros en responder, es lo que mas vemos”.

DFJ : Que me dice sobre los adolescentes?

Lt. Easeviole: “La mayoría de las muertes por traumatismo son para el grupo de edad entre 12 – 24 años”.

DFJ :¿Qué piensa usted acerca de un adolescente que tienen un permiso de conducir a los 16 o 17?

Lt. Easeviole: “Es exactamente lo que es, un privilegio de conducir, por lo que necesitan recibir educación, teniendo programas como este. Obviamente, cuanto más jóvenes son, más riesgos existen”.

ste comentario despertó muchas risas cuando fue colocado en Facebook, pero para los que asistieron al taller S.A.F.E. el jueves 15 de Septiembre en el Auditorio del Colegio Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High , hubiese sido perturbador escucharlo y hasta indignante… Ese día se aprendió con extrema crudeza que la ignorancia es la causa de los peores sufrimientos y tragedias.

Consientes de esa realidad las autoridades de la escuela en conjunto con el PTSA se dieron a la tarea de organizar una taller informativo acerca de los peligros de manejar bajo los efectos de drogas y alcohol así como la importancia del uso del cinturón de seguridad.

Igualmente se hablo de las distracciones del texting y del uso de celulares, todas estas cosas que muchos saben pero que no todos aplican.

La charla fue presentada por LEUT Vicent Easeviole y LEUT Jiménez ambos Paramedic Miami Dade County Fire Rescue , fotografías, videos y demostraciones personales complementaron la información proporcionada. Las imágenes eran tan perturbadoras que solo estudiantes de 14 años como mínimo podían estar presentes, se buscaba alertar basados en una realidad cruda, con el único propósito de evitar mas desgracias.

Y todo es cuestión de sentido común, el que te advierte que si ya cometiste la imprudencia de consumir drogas o beber alcohol, pues no manejes, y si estando sano te vas a subir al automóvil de alguien que no ,o esta, pues no lo hagas. Llamar a los padres o familiares es mucho mas inteligente ... y seguro. Las malas decisiones se llevan vidas y esperanzas.

En cuanto al cinturón de seguridad, es la misma teoría. Según las leyes de la Florida, el uso del cinturón es obligatorio en cada uno de los ocupantes del auto (adelante y atrás), los menores de 5 años tienen su propia silla de seguridad. El baúl es el lugar donde se colocan los comestibles, botellas, maletas, bolsos, mochilas, y cualquier objeto que frente a una coalición, puede salir disparado y lastimar a un ocupante. En camionetas, las redes deben de asegurar los paquetes.

El sentido común debe de prevalecer para evitar mayores desgracias.

Representante Escolar presenta a Doral los últimos avances de la Junta Escolar

l Representante del Distrito Escolar # 5, el Sr. Renier Díaz de la Portilla presentó a la Ciudad de Doral una actualización de los recientes acontecimientos en el Consejo Es-

colar.

Viviana Jordan, asistente del Sr. Renier Díaz de la Portilla presentó la información el 14 de septiembre de 2011 en la reunión del Consejo. Después de felicitar a la ciudad por los excelentes resultados de las escuelas del Doral, presentó el reporte financiero: - El 7 de septiembre la Junta Escolar aprobó la disminución del amillaramiento para próximo e año escolar. Esta disminución se traducirá en una reducción del 2% en los impuestos recaudados, el Distrito Escolar sufrirá una reducción de $ 40 millones con respecto al año pasado. Así los residentes del Condado pasarán a pagar una tasa impositiva más baja.

- El 7 de septiembre 2011 también, la Junta Escolar aprobó por unanimidad el presupuesto 2011-2012 de $ 3.9 miles de millones. Esta cantidad representa una disminución de más de $ 435 millones del año pasado y US $ 1,6 miles de millones entre 2008 y 2009.

- A pesar de esta reducción, el Distrito cerró el año mejor de lo esperado, poniendo $ 3,5 Millones de nuevo para suministros de instrucción para los salones de clase.

- El presupuesto 2011-12 protege la educación en todo el Distrito, se asegura la estabilidad laboral de los profesores y reconoce los momentos difíciles por los que pasan los contribuyentes. No hay despidos de los profesores a tiempo completo por razones económicas.

- A pesar de $ 210 millones menos en ingresos y varios aumentos de costos, el Distrito puso en marcha innovadores los programas Como nuevas ofertas tenemos: dos nuevas academias Autismo, un centro de bienestar para niños de 18 programas Magnets nuevos en 17 escuelas, etc.

- La junta aprobó un plan de reorganización que la estratégica, la eliminación de redundancias y la reducción de costos de operación. Esto dará como resultado un ahorro neto de $ 13 millones.

- El 07 de septiembre 2011 la Junta aprobó una política de proveedores locales preferencial, que ofrece a los propietarios de negocios locales una ventaja extra para ganar contratos de Miami-Dade County Public School.

n Wednesday, September 14, 2011, Mrs. Jeanmarie Manze Massa, the recycling manager for Miami-Dade County’s Solid Waste Management, visited Shelton Academy. She came to inform the students of the new recycling program named “Easy on the Earth, Easy on You.” Instead of having two bins for each home in the county, now every family receives one 65-gallon cart with wheels and a lid. What’s great about these carts is that it makes recycling so much easier!

Most everyone knows recycling is processing used materials into new ones. But do you know the materials you should recycle? Fifth grader Victoria Ruiz said that before this presentation, she didn’t know “that we couldn’t recycle yogurt cups or bags!”

Now more materials can be recycled than ever before. These include magazines, catalogs, glass, narrow neck plastics, steel, newspapers, mail, and office paper. Franciso Sanguino was listening intently. He recalls, “Mrs. Manze said it’s great when families recycle cereal boxes!”

But take note: some materials should NOT be recycled because they jam the processing machine. These include Styrofoam, caps, lids, tissue paper, yogurt cups, scrap metal, non-narrow neck bottles, diapers, construction debris, hazardous waste, liquids, ceramics, or yard waste. Carts should be kept five feet apart since an automated truck picks them up every two weeks. Mrs. Manze gave the students so much valuable information, they wanted to make sure they retained it all! “I wrote down the number 311 so I could call in case I forgot any of her tips,” said pupil Sebastian Casal.

In addition, the 5th grade class signed up for recycling alerts at www.miamidade.gov/dswm/ recycling_alerts.asp. Soon, students and teachers hope to implement their very own recycling program at Shelton!

Construction of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church becomes a reality

ince the beginning of its establishment in 2001, parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Doral have shared a dream: to have their own temple for worship. This dream will come true for each of the 4,200 Catholic registered families of this parish.

For a long time, the community has worked hard to obtain legal permits required for a project of this magnitude, and after the conclusion of evaluations, modification of plans and structure, most of the permits have been granted, having now a clear picture of the next steps and resources needed to begin work.

For this reason, the long-awaited “Groundbreaking Ceremony”, which kicks off the construction of the temple, has been scheduled for December 12th, the same day as the parish’s annual feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“Our idea is to begin the construction early next year, in January 2012 and complete it in twelve months,” said Fr. Israel Mago, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Church, who has spearheaded the efforts of this project and encouraged the community since his transfer to this parish over a year ago.

The project has been divided in two phases: first construction of a Multipurpose Facility followed by the building of the Temple which will house close to 1,400 parishioners and will offer about 350 parking spaces.

“The Multipurpose Facility will allow us to offer a good array of social and spiritual activities while the temple is being built; daily Mass, Sacraments celebrations, religious education classes for children and adults, Christian groups, Office Parish, a social area for community and private events, and most importantly, a Chapel for Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament exposed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week “ Fr. The construction of this project is being executed by Lemartec Co. with Mr. Manny Garcia-Tuñón as Executive Vice President and,

Architect Mr. Jorge Villa from Villas & Associates, Inc. It is estimated that construction of the first phase will cost about $ 4.2 million, requiring at least $ 3 million to begin work. The parish’s fund currently counts with $ 1.2 million, for this reason the call for community involvement is crucial to complete the necessary funding. The fundraising campaign will begin in October 2011, calling the families of the parish and businesses in the city of Doral for an active contribution. Upcoming social events and general activities for this cause will be informed through Doral

Family Journal.

With the contribution and unity typical of the people of Doral, there is no doubt that the vision from Fr.Mago on the construction of the church will become a reality: “A peaceful place where pilgrims could find a sanctuary to congregate; regardless of their country of origin, people will feel this is like their home being welcomed to share our faith and grow together as a church”.

In his closing remark, Fr. Mago expressed special gratitude to the authorities of Doral Academy Charter School, for their generosity lending their facilities for more than two years to permit the church’s functioning within our community. Likewise, grateful words were given to parishioners for their support, endorsement, enthusiasm and prayers to crystallize this project.

We hope that very soon we can celebrate the completion of this project, which will benefit future generations, through the efforts of a community that knows how to dream and realize those dreams.

caracterizado a los habitantes del Doral, no cabe la menor duda que la visión que el Padre Mago tiene para la construcción de la iglesia se hará realidad: “Un lugar de peregrinación que se convierta en una especie de santuario para los feligreses; un lugar, donde independientemente de la nacionalidad, todos puedan venir a compartir la fe y crecer como iglesia, sintiendo que esta es su casa”.

En sus palabras finales, el Padre Mago extendió un agradecimiento especial a las autoridades del Doral Academy Charter School, por la generosidad que han tenido en facilitar sus espacios para el ejercicio de las funciones de la comunidad de la iglesia por más de dos años. Igualmente agradeció a cada uno de los parroquianos por su apoyo, respaldo, entusiasmo y oraciones para cristalizar este proyecto.

Confiamos que dentro de muy poco podamos celebrar palpablemente la culminación de este proyecto, que extenderá sus beneficios a muchas generaciones futuras, gracias al esfuerzo de una comunidad que sabe soñar y luchar para alcanzar sus sueños.

“Nuestra idea es comenzar con la construcción para principios del próximo año, enero 2012 y culminar en doce meses” nos dijo el Padre Israel Mago, párroco de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, quien ha encabezado los esfuerzos de este proyecto y animado a la colectividad desde su traslado a la parroquia hace poco más de un año.

El proceso consta de dos fases: Construcción de un edificio multiusos como primera etapa, seguido por la edificación del templo que albergará unas 1.200 a

1.400 personas con unos 350 espacios de parqueo.

“Este edificio multiusos nos permitirá ofrecer los servicios parroquiales mientras se construye el templo: se realizarán misas diarias, se celebrarán todos los sacramentos, constará de salones de reunión donde se impartirá clases de educación religiosa de niños y participación de adultos en los distintos movimientos, oficina parroquial, un área de uso social y lo más importante, una Capilla de Adoración Perpetua con exposición del Santísimo Sacramento las 24 horas del día los 7 días de la semana” añadió el Padre Mago.

Los trabajos están siendo ejecutados por la empresa Lemartec Co. de la mano del Sr. Manny Garcia-Tuñón y la participación del Arquitecto Jorge Villa de la compañía Villas & Asociados, Inc. Se estima que la construcción de la primera etapa tenga un costo aproximado de $4.2 millones de dólares, siendo necesarios al menos $3 millones para comenzar los trabajos. Con un fondo actual de aproximadamente $1.2 Millones, la convocatoria a la participación comunitaria es más crucial que nunca. La campaña de recolección de fondos comienza en Octubre 2011, haciendo un llamado a las familias de la parroquia y comercios de la ciudad del Doral con su contribución activa. De igual forma, se estarán organizando eventos sociales y actividades diversas de recolección de fondos, los cuales serán comunicados oportunamente por Doral Family Journal.

esde su establecimiento en el año 2001, los feligreses de la parroquia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Doral han compartido un sueño: contar con un templo propio para adoración. Ahora, más cerca que nunca, este deseo está por convertirse en una esperada realidad para cada una de las 4.200 familias católicas que la conforman.

Durante mucho tiempo se ha tramitado distintos permisos y aprobaciones que requiere un proyecto de esta magnitud; y luego de evaluaciones, cambio de planos y estructura, ya se tiene la mayoría de las aprobaciones y un panorama bien claro de los estudios, desarrollos y recursos necesarios para comenzar la obra.

Es por ello que la tan ansiada ceremonia de “Colocación de la Primera Piedra”, la cual da inicio a los trabajos de construcción, se tiene pautada para el próximo 12 de Diciembre en la celebración de la fiesta del Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe.

Closing of the 14 Africando Symposium

he 14th edition for AFRICANDO symposium had its closing gala this past 16 at the Intercontinental Hotel of Doral City. The opening words for the meeting were spoken by Mr. Fred Olandeinde, President of the Foundation for Democracy in Africa, who later told us about Africando. “AFRICANDO is a non-profit Organi-

zation, founded in 1994, aiming to improve the trade and economical ties between United States and Africa… we do not trade. We provide training, encouragement, and help to make sure the policy is right for American companies to invest in Africa and vice versa”, Mr. Olandeinde explained.

For the American side, Miami-Dade Commissioner, Mr. Dennis C. Moss, said: “the idea is to continue to promote Miami-Dade county as a gateway to Africa…

We sure are very pleased to be adding Doral, because a lot of the export-import business going on in the county traverses through this particular community, and in addition, you already have a free-zone”.

Commissioner continued saying, “We hope to be able to set up this year an African Trade and Development Office within the free-zone”. Commissioner Moss also explained that Africa is open for business and in fact, countries like China, Britain and France are already conducting business, making money, and being successful in Africa. USA needs to be there too.

Another good point Commissioner Moss marked as important for people to understand was the fact that, by doing business with Miami-Dade, Africans will not just doing business with USA, but with Latin America and the Caribbean as well; “We already are the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. Once we all connect those linkages, we will be able to participate of tremendous opportunities”.

Every year at the closing Gala, the Foundation for Democracy in Africa awards a prominent figure with the Medal of Glory Award. This one is the highest FDA´s award, granted for a rich labor developing African culture, economics and social trades. This year, the

Medal of Glory was awarded to Mr. Ato Girma Wake, retired CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. The impressive career of Mr. Girma Wake includes more than 45 years dedicated to the airline industry, having the last seven as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, and despite of the highest costs the industry had to face during his leadership, he managed to have Ethiopian Airlines to register the most significant growth since its founding in 1946.

From the hands of Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, Mr. Girma Wake also received the Keys of Miami City.

a catorceava edición anual del Simposio de Africando tuvo su gala de clausura este pasado 16 de Septiembre, en el Hotel Intercontinental en la ciudad de Doral. Las palabras de apertura al acto estuvieron a cargo del Sr. Fred Olandeinde, Presidente de la Fundación para la Democracia en África, y quien luego nos dijo acerca de Africando. “AFRICANDO es una Organización no lucrativa fundada en 1994, que apunta esfuerzos a mejorar el intercambio y los lazos económicos entre Estados Unidos y África … nosotros no comerciamos, proveemos entrenamiento, alentamos y ayudamos para que los procesos estén bien hechos para las compañías americanas que deseen hacer negocio en África y viceversa”, explicó el Sr. Olandeinde.

Por la parte americana se encontraba el Comisionado del Condado Miami-Dade, Sr. Dennis C. Moss, que nos dijo: “la idea es seguir promocionando el Condado Miami-Dade como portal hacia África… estamos de seguro muy complacidos al agregar a Doral pues, muchos de los negocios de exportación e importación que tienen lugar en el condado son conducidos a través de esta comunidad en particular, y en adición a esto, ustedes ya tienen una zona de libre intercambio…”, continuó diciendo el Comisionado, “esperamos ser capaces de, para este año, establecer una Oficina para el Desarrollo y Comercio con África dentro de la zona libre”.

El Comisionado Moss también nos explicó que África está abierta para negociar y que algunos países como China, Gran Bretaña y Francia están ya de hecho, comerciando con el continente, haciendo dinero y teniendo éxito en sus empresas. Estados Unidos necesita estar allí también.

Otro buen punto señalado por el Comisionado Moss fue el hecho de que la población necesita entender que, al comerciar con Miami-Dade como parte de los Estados Unidos, no sólo se comercia con nuestro país sino también, con Latino América y el Caribe: “Nosotros ya somos el portal de acceso a Latino América y el Caribe. Una vez que conectemos estos puntos de enlace, tendremos el chance entonces de gozar de tremendas oportunidades.”.

Cada año, durante la Gala de clausura del simposio, la Fundación para la Democracia en África otorga a una figura prominente el Premio Medalla a la Gloria. Este es el mayor galardón que ofrece la FDA a una rica labor para el desarrollo de la cultura Africana, la economía y valores sociales del continente. Este año, la Medalla a la gloria fue otorgada al Sr. Ato Girma Wake, Oficial Ejecutivo en Jefe de Aerolíneas Etíopes. La impresionante carrera del Sr. Girma Wake incluye más de 45 años

dedicados a la industria de la aviación en Etiopía de los cuales, en los últimos siete, se destacó como CEO de la compañía. Conference on Leadership Development

institutions, donors, volunteers, etc. but strictly following the laws of this country. Not knowing is no excuse for not respecting them, so you must train and update every year. Aware of this need, the Miami Dade County Council PTA / PTSA provides each year continuous, workshops, conferences and lectures. Unfortunately not everyone understands the need to train and to do things correctly, and continual errors made by several local units have determined that 99 local units lost their status as non-profit organizations and therefore forced to pay taxes as if they were just another business. That was the information provided by Ms. Carolyn Nelson Goedert, Chair of the MDCC, PTA / PTSA on Saturday September 10th in the Conference on Leadership Development organized by the institution she leads. The MDCC PTA / PTSA is the sole agency responsible for this recovery process, therefore it has a great responsibility in preventing these situations. One of the measures already taken in previous years was to require the assistance of at least one member of each local unit in each workshop or conference. To be in “Good Standing”, each local unit must comply with this requirement and thus have the protection and benefits of MDCC PTA / PTSA. The Leadership Development Conference presented several topics, the key ones were: How to be an effective board member, Presidency, Financial matters, The Parent Academy, Legislation, Secretariat, Treasury, Membership, Statutes, Fundraising and Conflicts.

en years ago Ms. Eugenia B Thomas inaugurated the Doral school that bears her name; having been the first African American president of the Florida PTA and a great educator, she was the right person to be honored. The first PTA members asked her for a message and she gave them this advice: “Educate, do not carry on your shoulders the responsibility of representing parents and students without adequate preparation. Take advantage of every project and training provided by the Miami Dade County Council PTA / PTSA and never cease to follow directions” Ms. Thomas had every reason in the world: being a PTA member, a non-profit organization, means working with suppliers, financial institutions, government

During the conference it was noted all the 5 Doral public schools were represented, a situation common in recent years which explains their PTA / PTSAs intact maintain their status and reputation for excellence.

The message to those attending the conference is to share this valuable information and it is through Doral Family Journal, the official spokesman of the major organizations working for education, we will disseminate key points from the workshops of “Budget” and “Treasurers”: 1 - PTA works for the entire school community, not for clubs or individuals. No funds from any other entity or group can be deposited into a PTA account 2 - No employee of MDCPS can handle money or write checks in lieu of the local unit.

3 - Any change in the budget must be approve at a General Meeting. The Treasurer must provide a monthly financial report to the Board.

4 - Checks always require two authorized signatures, uncashed checks after 90 days become donations.

5 - Credit card use is not recommended. The president can only authorize the reimbursement as long as the purchase is part of the budget.

6 - The objective of the PTA is not raising funds therefore it must comply with the 3x1 rule: for each fund raising project there should be at least three educational enrichment projects. No fundraising project can be done during school hours. All projects must be approved by the MDCC PTA / PTSA and the school principal.

7 - A non-check-signing member of the board should review the bank statement and sign it each month.

8 - Fiscal Year starts July 1 and ends June 30 the following year 9 - The audit committee is made up of non-board members. The audit documents must be sent to the IRS within the time limits provided by the law.

10 – Local Units does not organize field trips or pay teachers 11 – The Principal vote values as a single vote at an executive committee; however, his/her vote against must be not discussed: they are running the school.

12 – All Local Units are under the umbrella of the MDCC PTA/PTSA any event must be reported to the council immediately.

13 - A well-documented budget should include all activities, all educational programs and all fundraising projects.

14 - It is allowed to receive donations with a specific purpose. No debts or obligations are inherited from one board to another.

15 - PTA is an organization true to its vision, seeks the welfare of the whole school community together. The bylaws govern each local unit individually and need to be updated every three years. Every decision made by the board must be in the minutes that remain indefinitely archived and serve as legal support.

16 - PTA will pay taxes when resells products

Interview to Ms. Caroline Nelson Goedert, MDCC PTA/PTSA President DFJ: Why is this workshop so important for all the local units?

Ms. Goedert: “Is extremely important, every unit needs training leaders, if the leaders are not trained they won’t know how to run the PTA properly, how to manage membership, how to manage funds and most importantly they may not know how to make sure that the PTA mission vision and values are conveyed to the community”.

DFJ: We have heard about a lot of mistakes, would you tell us what are the most dangerous errors?

Ms. Goedert: “The mistake we see the most is people not following the rules, whether is about money management, whether is about volunteers management, whether is about working with the school. If we know what the rules are, we can follow them; if we get the training, we can know what the rules are.”

DFJ: Where the people that didn’t attend this workshop can get the information?

Ms. Goedert: “ We have a second workshop coming on October 1st,Money Matters workshop, at Washington HS and that is for presidents, treasurers, and principals. We are doing it in conjunction with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, to make sure that everybody knows how the money should be handled, but beyond that we are going to have an updated CD so everybody gets trained.

DFJ: Do you have any message for Doral schools?

Ms. Goedert: Doral Public Schools are great, I can’t wait to get invited to visit the PTSAs to visit them for a General Meeting or any event. Please, you need to know I always there for you.

Sra. Goedert: “la mayoría de la gente no sigue las reglas, si se trata de la administración del dinero, si se trata de los voluntarios ,si se trata de trabajar con la escuela,. Solo si sabemos cuáles son las reglas, solo si estamos preparados, las vamos a seguir.

DFJ: Como la gente que no asistió a este taller puede obtener la información?

Sra. Goedert: “Tenemos un segundo taller el 1 de octubre, “Money Matters” en la escuela Booker T . Washington SHS y que es obligatorio para los presidentes, tesoreros y directores de escuelas. Lo estamos haciendo en conjunto con el directorio de MDCPS . Además vamos a enviar un CD de actualizado a escuela que lo solicite.

DFJ: ¿Tiene usted algún mensaje para las escuelas de Doral?

Sra. Goedert: “Las escuelas Públicas de Doral son muy buenas , no veo la hora a ser invitada a visitarlas para una Asamblea General de PTA o cualquier evento. Cuenten conmigo siempre.

ción , vamos a difundir puntos fundamentales de los talleres de “ Presupuesto” y “ Tesorería” 1- PTA trabaja para toda la comunidad de la escuela, no para clubes ni individuos particulares. Ningún monto de alguna entidad puede ser depositado en al cuenta del PTA 2- Ningún empleado del MDCPS puede manipular dinero del PTA, ni firmar cheques ni trabajar en tesorería.

3- Cualquier cambio del presupuesto es a través de un General Meeting 4- Cheques requieren siempre dos firmas autorizadas, cheques no cobrados después de 90 días pasan a ser donaciones.

5- El uso de tarjeta de crédito no esta recomendado. El reembolso solo puede ser autorizado por el presidente siempre y cuando la compra sea parte del presupuesto.

6- El objetivo del PTA no es conseguir fondos, se impone la regla de 3X1 : por cada proyecto de fundaraising se deberá realizar tres proyectos de enriquecimiento educativo. Ningún proyecto de fundraising se podrá hacer en horario escolar. Todos los proyectos deberán ser aprobados por el MDCC PTA/PTSA y el director de la escuela.

7- Un miembro del board, sin firma para cheques, deberá revisar los estados bancarios cada mes y firmarlos.

8- Año fiscal se inicia el 1ro de Julio y termina el 30 de Junio del año siguiente , tesorero es el único miembro del board que entrega su puesto al cerrar los libros y no antes.

9- El comité de auditoria lo conforman no board members, una vez finalizada se envían los documentos al IRS sin falta y en los plazos que dispone la ley.

10- PTA no organiza excursiones, ni paga maestros y sus programas de fundraising deben ser los autorizados por MDCC PTA/PTSA y por el principal de cada escuela 11- Voto del Director en comité ejecutivo vale por uno cuando es votación a favor , sin embargo su voto en contra no se discute, en sus manos y de nadie mas esta la dirección del colegio.

12- Total las unidades locales del PTA están amparadas por MDCC PTA/PTSA, cualquier dificultad , mal uso del TAX ID o eventualidad debe de ser reportado al consejo inmediatamente.

13- Un presupuesto bien documentado debe de incluir todas las actividades, todos los programas educativos y todos los proyectos de “fundraising”.

14- Es permitido recibir donaciones que especifiquen destinatario. No se heredan deudas ni obligaciones de un directorio a otro.

15- PTA es una organización que fiel a su visión, busca el bienestar de toda la comunidad escolar en conjunto. Los bylaws regulan cada unidad individualmente y hay que actualizarlos cada tres años. Cada decisión tomada por el directorio debe estar en las minutas que permanecen indefinidamente archivadas y que sirven de soporte legal .

ace 10 años la Sra. Eugenia B. Thomas inauguraba la escuela del Doral que lleva su nombre, habiendo sido la primera presidenta afroamericana del Florida PTA y una gran educadora, era la persona indicada para honrar esa escuela y apadrinarla.

Los integrantes del primer PTA le pidieron un mensaje y ella les dio el mejor consejo del mundo: “Edúquense, no pueden llevar en sus hombros la responsabilidad de representar a padres y estudiantes sin la debida preparación , aprovechen de todo proyecto y entrenamiento que les proporcione Miami Dade County Council PTA/ PTSA y nunca dejen de seguir las indicaciones y aplicar lo aprendido” La Sra. Thomas tenia toda la razón del mundo, ser integrante de un PTA, organización sin fines de lucro, significa trabajar con proveedores, instituciones financieras, instituciones gubernamentales, benefactores, voluntarios, etc. pero siguiendo estrictamente las leyes de este país. El desconocerlas no es excusa para no respetarlas, por eso hay que entrenarse y actualizarse cada año. Consientes de esta necesidad cada año se ofrecen continuos, talleres de trabajo, conferencias, charlas informativas , a través de Miami Dade County Council PTA/PTSA. Lamentablemente no todos comprenden la necesidad entrenarse y de hacer las cosas correctamente; los continuos errores realizados por varias instituciones locales de PTA han determinado que 99 pierdan su condición de organizaciones sin fines de lucro y por tanto forzadas a pagar impuestos como si fueran simples negocios. Esa fue la información proporcionada por la a Sra. Carolyn Nelson Goedert, Presidenta del MDCC, PTA/PTSA el día sábado 10 de Septiembre en la Conferencia para el Desarrollo del Liderazgo organizada por la institución que dirige.. EL MDCC PTA/PTSA es el único organismo encargado de este proceso de recuperación, por tanto su responsabilidad es grande en cuanto a velar que no se repita mas esta situación. Una de las medidas tomadas ya en años anteriores es exigir la asistencia de por lo menos un miembro en cada taller de trabajo o conferencia de desarrollo. Es un requisito para que la unidad este en situación de “Good Standing” (Buen Estado) y por tanto tenga el amparo y los beneficios del MDCC PTA/PTSA. En la conferencia de Desarrollo de Liderazgo se presentaron diversos temas, tales como ser un miembro de directorio efectivo, Presidencia, Asuntos financieros, Parent Academy, Legislación, Secretariado, Tesorería, Membresía, Estatutos, Recaudación de fondos, y Conflictos …

Durante la conferencia se pudo apreciar que las 5 escuelas publicas del Doral estuvieron presentes con varios representantes, situación común en los últimos años lo que explica por que sus PTA/PTSAs mantienen su status intacto y su reputación de excelencia. What to do: • Set up a “hands on” work space and have your child apply yellow and orange watercolor

on the coffee filters starting from the middle of the filter to the end (mimicking petals.)

• While letting the coffee filter dry, begin painting or stamping with paper towel, green and blue paint to give a textural surface.

• Once all your items are dry, cut your coffee filter in a zigzag to replicate each petal and glue it down onto the dry background.

You may now add the recycled food labels that have been cut into stems and petals.

The seeds of the sunflower can be painted or replicated with black beans or brown or black glitter. Some of my students are learning about plant life in science class and this activity is a perfect fusion of art and science!

The results are beautiful and you have your own sunflower masterpiece to showcase!

cornucopia of music will provide a feast of multicultural delights as world beat music takes center stage at the Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival on Saturday November 19, 2011 in Miami. A melodic smorgasbord featuring a musical genre for every taste - including reggae, Jamaican, Latin American, Kompa, Caribbean, rock ‘n roll, and more - will highlight this year’s concert.

In addition to a special tribute to the life of Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley and 50 years of Wailers music, this year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer and The Original Wailers. Also hitting the stage are a unique group of artists whose musical brilliance is eclipsed only by its message of love and hope.

“I carefully selected this lineup because every artist has devoted his life to spreading a message that is consistent with my purpose,” said ROCKAZ MVMT president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks.

“We are all striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference through the universal language of music.”

According to artist Warrior King, “As a Rastafarian you just don’t sing music, you sing music with a purpose and a mission. To the four corners of the Earth I carry my music, and the message of love, to all people of all races.”

Cultura Profetica is a Puerto Rican reggae band with lyrics that center mostly on socio-political and ecological issues. Pato Banton sometimes invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show and is committed to helping people “stay positive and never give in.”

Connis Vanterpool is a brilliantly talented musician who has worked

with scores of international artists but is most proud of his involvement with the volunteer work he has done in the community, providing free music workshops at various elementary and secondary schools. Tabou Combo’s vocalist and main songwriter Fanfan said, “We want people to dance and forget their sorrows.”

And while there is no doubt that Tabou’s music is made for dancing, it also features lyrics that focus on social issues of the day.

Gondwana, from Chile, has been spreading the word of Jah Love, standing tall and strong in a peace-loving position of musical and lyrical creation. And according to artist Luciano, “We are all children of the Most High God and I just want my family and my fans to receive the blessings that God has given.” The Wailing Souls’ Lloyd ‘Bread’ McDonald adds to this, “Apart from the musical aspect of what we are doing, we see it as a very spiritual thing. Whenever you start singing, everyone come together. The bad guys come together, the good guys come together, everybody come together. The rich people, poor people, like one. The message what we a try to preach is love and unity.”

“Our ultimate goal is to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live,” said D’Niscio Brooks. “We’re accomplishing this task by spreading art, culture and music while raising money to end poverty, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”

This year’s concert will include a food drive benefiting Curley’s House (www. curleyshouseinc.com) an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals,

families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/ AIDS infected individuals by providing the nutrition they need. Guests will be asked to contribute two or more cans of food as part of the cost of admission.

On event day we will orchestrate an “island festival” of tents that will feature new products, special drinks, foods, art, and more. In addition we will have a nonprofit village with a host of foundations offering information, art & crafts village, food vending village, green partners explaining the benefits of going green, workshops, bounce houses for children, skateboard show, a BMX bike show, Geen Mobility hosted bike valet, YOGA in the park, eco village, compost village, farmers market, Rock Star VIP lounge, Recycling bins will be placed throughout the venue along with signage alerting attendees to the importance of recycling.

ara Gabriela Borges (Gaby) la vida como actriz comenzó desde muy pequeña, con solo 3 años ya bailaba salsa, y a los 4 fue ganadora del primer lugar en su categoría en la competencia ”World Salsa Federation”. Un día de casualidad su mamá la escucho cantar en el auto y quedo fascinada con su voz. Descendiente de padres mexicanos alega no tener ningún vínculo con el arte en su familia, pero lo cierto es que de algún lugar le viene el talento a la bailarina, actriz y cantante.

Ha bailado para los Miami Heats y los Marlins Minnowsts, formo parte de “The Untouchables” un grupo de baile dirigido por Glenn Douglas Packard.

Su debut en la televisión lo hizo en la telenovela “Eva Luna” con el papel de Laurita donde hacia de hija del reconocidísimo actor brasileño Guy Ecker y el cual le sirvió para ganarse el corazón de todos los televidentes y para que el Nuevo Herald la nominara “Mejor Actriz Infantil”.

-Gaby, cuéntame como fue tu experiencia en Eva Luna y ¿Cómo te sentiste al ser la hija de Guy Ecker?

Fue una experiencia muy linda y sacrificada, yo hice el casting de la novela en inglés, yo hablaba español pero muy poco y tuve la suerte de que me aceptaran, yo ya había trabajado en “El rostro de Analia” pero solo como extra, a Guy lo extraño, me ayudo mucho, ojala pueda volver a trabajar con el, es muy buen actor.

-¿Qué representa tu mamá en tu carrera?

Sin ella no puedo hacer carrera, ella es la que me lleva a todos los lugares, yo la quiero mucho siempre me esta apoyando, ella es la parte mas grande de esta carrera.

-¿Qué sientes cuando llegas a un lugar y las personas voltean para mirarte y dicen, “Mira llego Gaby”?

Se siente muy bien, y también me preguntan como lo hice, y me dicen que me quieren mucho, es una experiencia muy linda.

esolution 277 of the National Traffic Council (Cotran), popularly known as the “law of the chairs” has been in force since 1 September 2010, in São Paulo.

Who does not fulfill the requirements of the law will be subject to penalty under Article 168 of the Brazilian Traffic Code that considers that the infringement as something very serious and provides for a fine of R $ 191.54 (one hundred ninety-one reais and fifty-four cents) plus 7 points in the Driver’s License and the retention of the vehicle until the irregularity is remedied.

After one year of this Law, the use of car seats for children up to 7 years of age seems to have been fully accepted by “paulistas” (São Paulo dwellers).

According to the Military Police of São Paulo, only 2% to 3% of drivers were found without the equipment. The Military Police declared that after the use of this car seat the number of children deaths in car accidents in São Paulo decreased.

It’s hard to find parents of children up to 7 ½ years old, without a car seat installed in the family car.

The violation of this law in the city decreased sensibly in this first year. The sad news is that after this Law, the chairs have become the object of greed of thieves. The Civil Police registered a significant increase in thefts of this kind since the validity of the Law. According to the News Paper “Diário de São Paulo”, CET Engineering, the Company that controls traffic in São Paulo recorded 2531 traffic fines for noncompliance with this law as of July 30, 2011.

Also, accordingly with the same Official information, experts say the seats are the best protection for children, since the belts are made for passengers with at least 1.45 m tall. Pursuant to the report released in 2009 by the World Health Organization “WHO”, the proper use of such equipment reduces the possibility of death in automobile accidents, by 70%.

Completa um ano a Lei que obriga o uso de cadeirinha de carro para crianças na cidade de São Paulo, Brasil

A

resolução 277 do Conselho Nacional de Trânsito (COTRAN), popularmente conhecida como “Lei das Cadeirinhas” está em vigor desde 1º de setembro de 2.010 na cidade de São Paulo.

Quem não cumprir a Lei estará sujeito a penalidade prevista no artigo 168 do Código de Trânsito Brasileiro que considera a infração como gravíssima e prevê multa de R$ 191,54 (cento e noventa e um reais e cinquenta e quatro centavos) além de 7 pontos na Carteira Nacional de Habilitação e ainda a retenção do veículo até que a irregularidade seja sanada.

Após um ano da Lei, o uso de cadeirinhas para crianças de até 7 anos parece ter sido incorporada pelo paulistano.

Segundo a Polícia Militar de São Paulo, somente 2% a 3% (dois a três por cento) dos motoristas abordados estavam sem o equipamento. A Polícia Militar também atribui à cadeirinha a queda no número de mortes de crianças em acidentes de carro na cidade de São Paulo.

Hoje é difícil encontrar pais de crianças de até 7 anos e meio de idade, sem um modelo instalado no carro de família.

Caiu muito a aplicação de multa no descumprimento da Lei na cidade em um ano. A triste notícia é que depois da Lei, as cadeirinhas passaram a ser objeto de cobiça dos ladrões. A Polícia Civil registrou um aumento significativo de furtos desse tipo desde a vigencia da Lei. De acordo com o Diário de São Paulo, a CET Companhia e Engenharia de Tráfico registrou 2531 autuações pelo descumprimento da regra até 30 de julho de 2.011.

De cordo com as informações do mesmo Jornal, especialistas afirmam que as cadeirinhas são a melhor proteção para as crianças já que o cinto de segurança é feito para passageiros com no mínimo 1,45 m de altura. De acordo com o relatório divulgado em 2.009 pela Organização Mundial de Saúde OMS, a utilização correta do equipamento reduz em 70% a possibilidade de morte em acidentes automobilísticos.

ears ago, organic foods were only found in health food stores or organic markets. Today, organic foods are becoming a regular feature in most supermarkets. Now, when you grab an organic fruit and a conventional fruit, both look the same, so how to determine which one to choose. In addition, conventional food is cheaper, so is it worth it to spend more money on organic food?

We heard a lot the word “organic”, but do we really know what it means? Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. These products include fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meat. Organic farmers encourage soil and water conservation during farming practices and promote pollution reduction. They do not use conventional fertilizers, chemical weed killers or prevent livestock disease.

Organic farmers apply natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants instead of chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth. They use beneficial insects and birds to reduce pests and disease instead of spraying insecticides. In addition, they replace herbicides to manage weeds by crop rotation. They also give animals organic feed and use preventive measures to minimize disease rather than giving animals antibiotics, growth hormones and medications.

Now that we know what organic means how do we determine if a product is organic or not? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established a certification program that requires that products need to meet government standards to be called organic. If a food product has an USDA Organic label it means it is produced according to the USDA standards and it is a 100% organic. Products that are made with at least 70% organic ingredients are labeled as “made with organic ingredients”, but they do not carry the USDA Organic label.

Although organic foods products are grown by using more natural ways, one common concern with organic food is cost. The higher cost is usually related to more expensive agricultural practices. However, it is a matter of knowing where to buy and what to buy in order to be able to afford organic foods. Stores as whole foods and the fresh market usually sell this products in larger quantities, while they can also be found in Publix, Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie stores in smaller quantities.

ace años atrás, los alimentos orgánicos sólo se encontraban en las tiendas naturistas o mercados de productos orgánicos. Hoy en día, los alimentos orgánicos se están convirtiendo en un elemento habitual en la mayoría de los supermercados.

Ahora, cuando usted agarra una fruta orgánica y una fruta convencional, ambos tienen el mismo aspecto, entonces como determinamos cuál elegir? Además, los alimentos convencionales son más baratos, así que ¿vale la pena gastar más dinero en la comida orgánica?

Hemos escuchado mucho la palabra “orgánico”, pero ¿sabemos realmente lo que significa? … Orgánico se refiere a la forma en que los productos agrícolas son cultivados y procesados. Estos productos incluyen frutas, verduras, granos, productos lácteos y carne. Los agricultores orgánicos fomentan la conservación del suelo y el agua durante las prácticas agrícolas y promueven la reducción de la contaminación. Ellos no utilizan fertilizantes convencionales, ni agentes químicos contra las malezas o para prevenir las enfermedades del ganado.

El United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ha establecido un programa de certificación que exige que los productos deben cumplir con los estándares del gobierno para ser llamados orgánicos. Si un alimento tiene un sello orgánico del USDA esto significa que se produce de acuerdo con las normas de USDA y es un 100% orgánico Los productos que están hechos con menos el 70% de ingredientes orgánicos son etiquetados como “hecho con ingredientes orgánicos”, pero que no llevan el sello orgánico del USDA. One of the most recommended diets for us is the 1800 Calorie Diabetic Diet. But what is it?

It means eating no more than 1800 calories of food each day. You may use this diet to control your blood sugar or lose weight. Even to lower your risk for heart problems too.

A sample of an 1800 Calorie Diet is listed below. You can exchange one food for another from the same food group. For example, you can choose 1 slice of bread instead of ¾ cup of another dry cereal. Or you can choose ½ cup fruit juice instead of 1 ¼ cups of melon.

I think we can do this diet with no problem. It seems to be easy to do and beneficial to our body weight and blood sugar level. Good luck!

Una de las dietas más recomendadas para nosotros es la Dieta de las 1800 Calorías para Diabéticos. Pero, ¿en qué consiste?

Consiste en no comer más de 1800 calorías de alimentos diariamente. Usted puede emplear esta dieta para controlar su nivel de azúcar en sangre o para bajar de peso. Hasta para disminuir el riesgo de problemas cardiacos también.

A continuación se presenta un ejemplo de la Dieta de 1800 Calorías. Usted puede intercambiar un alimento por otro del mismo grupo alimenticio. Por ejemplo, usted puede elegir una rebanada de pan en sustitución de ¾ de taza de otro cereal seco o puede seleccionar una ½ taza de jugo de frutas en vez de 1 ¼ tazas de melón.

Yo creo que podemos hacer esta dieta sin problemas. Parece fácil de implementar y beneficiosa para nuestro peso corporal y niveles de azúcar en sangre. ¡Buena suerte!

stimados amigos y colectividad les damos una cordial bienvenida desde aquí: DESDE LOS PITS CON ALEX comienza YA. Italia, la tierra de Enzo Ferrari, escenario de grandes carreras a lo largo de la historia del automovilismo mundial, grandes pilotos que marcaron legendarios caminos y un santuario un circuito inolvidable donde un campo de batalla patrimonio de la historia de la Formula 1. Monza donde los grandes pilotos se hacen campeones hoy domingo 11 de septiembre con Vettel en la Pole y un campeonato a punto de caramelo arrancamos Monza. La clasificación estaría comandada por Vettel seguido de los dos Mclaren Hamilton y Button dejando a Alonso y su Ferrari en el cuarto lugar seguido de Webber y Massa asi estarían las primeras seis posiciones de la salida, Se daría la luz verde Alonso haría una salida magistral que lo colocaría en el primer puesto de carrera siendo ovacionado por todos los Ferraristas que plagaron las instalaciones de Monza.

En las posiciones intermedias Luzi perdería el control de su HRT causando un accidente que dejaría fuera a varios pilotos (Petrov, Rosberg y el propio Luzzi). El auto de seguridad aparecería en la primera vuelta para reordenar la partida con Alonso esta vez en la primera posición y Vettel siguendolo. Se daría la largada y Vettel daría cuenta de Alonso para así despegarse en el primer lugar, Webber se saldría de pista al perder su alerón delantero en la cuarta vuelta y así culminaría su jornada, luego de la primera entrada a pits se daría una batalla interesante que generaría muchas emociones al ver a Michael Shumacher peleando posiciones con Lewis Hamilton quien quedaría relegado durante más de 10 vueltas intentando pasar al siete veces campeón que estaba inspirado aguantando los embates del Ingles de Mclaren quien al final lograría el pase y comenzaría la remontada intentado darle caza a Fernando Alonso que luego de colocar gomas duras caería al tercer puesto.

Los pilotos novatos también dieron un buen espectáculo con el Venezolano Pastor Maldonado ocupando posiciones dentro de los puntos mientras su Williams calzaba gomas blandas, el Mexicano Sergio Perez abandonaría la competencia por problemas en la caja de cambios de su Sauber que se quedaba neutralizado

Sports | Deportes en la vuelta 32 de la carrera, de nuevo Jenson Button daría lecciones de conducción con neumáticos duros, en mi opinión el Ingles de Mclaren es el piloto que mejor a interpretado el uso de las gomas que Pirelli provee a los equipos y que esta temporada le ha propinado victorias y pódiums.

Otro joven que haría una muy buena carrera seria Jaime Alguersuari que con su Toro Rosso llegaría de séptimo detrás del Ferrari de Felipe Massa que una vez más continua llegando rezagado en comparación con su compañero de Equipo que aguantaría la carrera y terminaría tercero detrás de Jenson Button. Sevastian Vettel de nuevo ensenando el camino y con una carrera impecable pondría el campeonato a punto de caramelo dejando prácticamente sentenciada la temporada actual que pudiera definirse este Domingo en Singapur a la luz de la luna en la primera carrera nocturna la temporada donde ya Red Bull prepara la fiesta de celebración. Así que Monza terminaría dando un gran espectá-

Asi llegarían con ocho pilotos retirados por fallas y accidentes que afortunadamente no dieron mayores consecuencias.

Hispanic Art Expressions Gallery Night This past September 15th, giving start to the Hispanic Heritage month, Carmen Johnson, City of Doral’s Cultural Affairs Advisory Board Chair along with Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez gave start to the Hispanic Art Expressions Gallery Night at the Doral Park Country Club.

During the event, Maria Lazo, Director of the Miami-Dade Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board and Chairman to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners office, Joe Martinez, awarded Maria Teresa D’Azucena, artist of the front art cover 2011 and also recognized the students of the 2011 Art Contest Winners

Service Academy Day at U.S. Southern Command mies. More than 120 guest atended in addition to various local and state elected oficials.

Currently, 12 students nominated by Diaz-Balart are completing work in West Point, the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy. Eight others have graduated and are now sering in the U.S. Military.

Y ésto que es? no es el servicio militar, no son entrenamientos para olimpiadas, son las clases con las que diariamente Pilar León, la entrenadora boricua mas querida , mantiene en forma a la gente de Doral Isles y de que manera! Y como con música todo duele menos, las esforzadas deportistas reciben la mejor selección, de todos lo ritmos de ayer y hoy. Para estirar e irse, Marc Anthony es el más solicitado. El pasado fin de semana los relojes no solo marcaban las calorías perdidas, Pilar cumplía un año mas y sus fieles seguidoras querían festejar, con un indulgente almuerzo oriental y mucho cariño para regalar. Fue una tarde linda y divertida, mexicanas, boricuas, colombianas , venezolanas, ecuatorianas, argentinas, peruanas, etc., toda la gente linda del Doral que no le tiene miedo a la balanza estuvo ahí…Como se te quiere Pili.

Al soplar las velas, escuchamos los tres deseos; 1- Salud para todas y buen ejercicio siempre 2- Marc Anthony (que casualidad que el grupo completo iba al concierto esa noche!)

3- Que DFJ aumente tiraje ya que la Isla del Encanto y alrededores quiere recibir este famoso periódico quincenal (Y los 5,000 amigos de Pili en FB también lo piden) Nos despedimos con la certeza que todo lo que pida nuestra querida amiga le será concedido, cada momento feliz que nos ha entregado bien valen este mensaje. Cuando por los años no puedas correr, trota; cuando no puedas trotar, camina; cuando no puedas caminar usa el bastón. ¡¡Pero no te detengas... ¡FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS PILAR!

The Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School of Doral The Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School of Doral celebrated their ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on Friday, September 9th, 2011.

Students of all ages enjoyed viewing art, sampling treats hosted by Chik-fil-A and creating their own piece of art fun! Art and music books were for sale through our first annual book fair that evening.

The highlight of the event was the ribbon cutting ceremony. Economic Development Coordinator, Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, Felipe Madrigal, of Doral & Airport West Chamber of Commerce. and Sara Alfaro, Owner and art teacher of the school celebrated the official opening by cutting the red ribbon!

The Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School opened the doors to students of all ages and levels. From drawing to painting, mixed media and sculpture, owner, state certified art teacher and Doral based award winning artist, Sara Alfaro, has crafted a unique curriculum that ignites a passion for the process of art and expertise in the media. With over fifteen years of proven success in teaching in the public and private school sectors as well as museum education, Ms. Alfaro emphasizes experimentation at all ages and levels of abilities. “It is important to me to have a small group setting where each student can thrive creatively, through positive assessment. “I teach with all learning styles included and keep my lessons very interactive with the incorporation of music, historical connections and a

respect for recycling and creating from found objects.”

During the month of October, The Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School student artwork will be showcased at Chik-fil-A restaurant, Doral location. The exhibition, “The Season of the Cow,” will feature works created by inspirations of the Chick-fil-A campaign, “EAT MOR CHIKIN.” Students were to create works of fusing the harvest season and the idea of how a cow can be an icon and creative logo. Although not all works depict the actual cow, these unique works represent the moral ethics and creativity Chick-fil-A offers as a family restaurant. The artists showcased range from ages 2 years to 15 years old.
