7 SECRET BEACHES YOU HAVE TO SEE!

The world over, traveling to a beach is one of the most favorite vacation things we collectively love to do. The soft sands, crashing waves and ever-changing shoreline is simply irresistible. But the popular beaches are overcrowded and increasingly more touristy. If you are searching for a true escape, put these seven secret beaches on your travel bucket list.

1DIAZ BEACH

Cape Town, South Africa

Dramatic cliffs and pristine waters, Diaz beach is scenically stunning. Only an hour drive from Cape Town, this secret beach is situated on Cape Point and visible from the lighthouse above. Well worth the twenty-minute walk to the shoreline, soak in the impressive coastal cliffs, but stray from the water as rough currents make swimming here dangerous.

1. Diaz Beach, South Africa 2. Furore Beach, Italy

2 FURORE BEACH

Amalfi Coast, Italy

In a small village situated on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, Furore is a feast to the eyes. The town, known for its gorge, is tucked away and often called the “town that doesn’t exist.” What used to be a scattered settlement amongst the mountains is now a village, brightly painted to entice tourists and visitors to their small commune. Bypassing the dramatic fjord is a bridge with a state road looking down upon a sunny secret beach.

3 ASPES BEACH Heraklion, Crete

Only known to locals, Aspes is located on the south coast of Heraklion and accessible by boat. Situated near the village of Tris Ekklisies, this beach is one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of the Asteroussia Mountains with high cliffs and sea caves. The beach was named Aspes, meaning mountain collapse in Greek, due to the sliding cliffs in the area.

4 CAPE LEVEQUE Western Australia

At the end of the remote peninsula in Western Australia’s Kimberly region, Cape Leveque offers a unique slice of historic paradise. Earthy rocks of rich rust color juxtapose the white sand extending along the coastline. Accessible only by four wheel drive vehicle or seaplane, this secret beach was once a campsite for ancient tribes in Northern Australia.

3. Aspes Beach, Greece 4. Cape Levesque, Australia 5. Ao Sane Beach, Thailand

5 AO SANE BEACH

Phuket, Thailand

This quiet secluded beach is tucked away and only found if you know where it exists. In close proximity to tourist filled Nai Harn Beach, Ao Sane is a place of solitude and an inviting break from the populated bustle. This rocky beach is one of Phuket’s most tranquil destinations offering magnificent snorkeling.

6 BLACK VOLCANIC BEACH

Wai’anapanapa Park, Maui Wai’anapanapa is a prime example of a beach of natural contrast. Hidden below the state park’s walking trail is beach access to a stretch of ancient black volcanic rocks and crashing waves of crystal turquoise waters. This beach is a must-stop while driving the infamous Road to Hana. There are freshwater caves, lava tubes and blowholes, all surrounded by vibrant green landscape.

7 PACHENA BAY BEACH

British Columbia, Canada

This protected bay on the west coast of Vancouver Island is located near the fishing and marine community of Bamfield. During non-camping months, this beach can be devoid of people, but rich in marine and wildlife. Many backpackers start at Pachena to access the West Coast Trail. Here you can explore the unspoiled west coast by hiking through oldgrowth rainforest and partake in diving or beach combing.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong is a city of many personalities - a mix of old and new worlds that meet squarely in the middle of this sky high bustling metropolis. It is also a popular layover point for flights to many other countries. So, if you find yourself in Hong Kong for just two days, as I did, here are a few of my

so I booked into the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong for one night, which occupies the 102-118 floors of the International Commerce Centre. From the airport, take the MTR Airport Express train to Kowloon Station, which is located in the same building as the hotel - for quick return to the airport.

short-stay recommendations on where to stay, where to eat and what to see to make the most of your two days in Hong Kong.

I was looking for a unique hotel experience that offered beautiful accommodation, convenient location and one-of-a-kind views,

The hotel is luxurious, elegant and tall. Did you know that the RitzCarlton Hong Kong is the highest (not the tallest) hotel in the world? The deluxe harbor view suite (500 square feet, and spacious by world hotel standards, never mind Asian) was on the 116 floor and the views over the city were astounding. It was like a week’s worth of sightseeing

from the comfort of my lovely hotel room. The hotel is so high, it makes all the other skyscrapers seem short in comparison. Trust me - you will not find this city perspective anywhere else in Hong Kong.

SEE

The other popular place from which to see the whole city is atop The Peak The vintage funicular tram ride up to The Peak is as much fun as the destination, and the Peak Tram is easy to reach by foot from Central Station (MTR). I recommend purchasing the Sky Terrace pass, 428 meters above sea level, giving you access to the highest elevation deck with 360 degree stellar views of Hong Kong.

There are many amazing markets in Hong Kong -Temple Street Market and Ladies Market are huge, very busy and time consumingsomewhat impractical for a two day itinerary. I would suggest Stanley Market. One of the oldest fishing villages in Hong Kong, it is a charming place with a lovely beach, Tin Hau Temple, and a great market for buying well priced silk garments, art, jewelry and souvenirs.

An absolute sight to behold, and one of my favorite places in Hong Kong is Aberdeen Floating Fishing Village, where you can see more than 600 working junk boats, a floating village that houses about 6,000 people, and even a massive floating restaurant - all set in the midst of midtown Hong Kong.

EAT

Hong Kong is a foodie wonderland. Be sure to stop, buy and sample from street carts and outdoor food stalls. In Central, try the egg tarts at Tai Cheong Bakery and the shrimp wonton soup at Mak’s Noodle.

If you are feeling adventurous, I highly recommend spending four hours with Cecilia and Silvana, sisters and owners of Hong Kong Foodie Tours (hongkongfoodietours.com). It is the absolute best way to taste your way through authentic Hong Kong - in other words, eat like a local

instead of a tourist. Silvana took us to Tai Po Market. Off the beaten path, the pedestrian boulevards are lined with family owned food stalls. The tour included handmade sweets, seafood at a Dai Pai Dong, delicious roasted goose, snake soup and mind-blowing steamed rice rolls. You can taste the proud local heritage in every bite.

The nation is home to progressing cities, traditional villages, regional markets, as well as parks and stunning lakes. As

one of the most inspiring destinations for travelers in Southeast Asia, Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1,000 years. Ancient chronicles say that there were once 4,446 temples in this region; today approximately 2,230 remain. To learn more about travel to Myanmar, visit www.myanmar.travel.

Lake Inle fishermen have a unique way of rowing a boat with their foot. Conical fishnets are being used for the daily catch. Since modern and effective fishing methods are being used more and more, this tradition is dying fast.

PINK SANDS CLUB

CANOUAN ISLAND, ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES

It isn’t every day that you get to experience how the other half lives. You know - wealthy beyond imagination with access to well... everything. In December, I had the pleasure of spending five days at Pink Sands Club, an exclusive hotel property located on the Caribbean island of Canouan in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. With villas that rent for as much as $20,000 per night, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it far exceeded anything I could have imagined.

In fact, it was pure pink perfection.

TRAVEL OFTEN . LIVE WELL 31

Pink Sands Club officially opened in October, 2016 and it is already garnering worldwide attention. It may be the breathtaking seclusion that grabs your heart the moment you set foot on Canouan Island. It might be the world-class service and authentically friendly staff that leaves a lasting impression. And it might be the hotel’s location, right on the pristine white sands of Godahl Beach that has you never wanting to leave. For me - it was all three.

With just 26 suites and 6 villas, Pink Sands Club is an exclusive paradise for those looking to get away from it all, without giving up anything at all.

The Pink Sands Club Spa, with nine hillside villas and two overwater palapas, offers the best in recuperative luxury. I indulged in a spa pedicure that came with the most amazing massage and foot treatment.

The award winning 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Jim Fazio, offers a challenging course with the longest par 3 in the world and the best views of the island. Sunset from the 13th tee is a must!

Guests are truly spoiled when it comes to dining at Pink Sands Club. Pre-beach breakfast at Lagoon Cafe, lunch at The Pool Bar or dressed up for dinner at Juliet, every culinary option is available. From the moment I arrived, every staff member knew my name, how I liked our eggs and how I took our coffee. It was impressive.

For anyone traveling with children, there is a spectacular Kids Club that will appeal to toddlers as well as teens. A lot of time, attention and money has gone into ensuring the little ones have a great vacation too.

This was fun! Each suite is assigned a dedicated golf cart to navigate the impressive and expansive grounds, estate, second beach club and golf club house.

WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES AND GO TO YOUR HAPPY PLACE, IT IS PROBABLY CANOUAN ISLAND... EVEN IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN HERE. IT’S TRULY THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF.

The number of unspoiled islands that have not been taken over by tourism becomes fewer and fewer each year. Canouan Island is one of the rare ones. This island has it allstunning white beaches, clear blue waters and lush forests. It is also home to one of the largest living coral reefs in the Caribbean, rife with colorful marine life, ideal for

snorkeling and diving. Directly to the south of Mustique Island, and a 35-minute flight from Barbados, the famous Tobago Cays Marine Park, where you can swim with sea turtles, is a short boat ride away. The weather on Canouan (pronounced Can-o-wan)is warm and sunny but with much less humidity that other tropical destinations.

GETTING TO CANOUAN ISLAND

• Commercial Airline: Canouan Island is an island hopper away from Barbados, Grenada, and St. Lucia, with scheduled flights daily (often included in 4-7 nights stay).

• Private Jet: The Pink Sands Club resort has two private jets for guests who prefer a more elegant mode of air transportation (included in 10+ nights stay with certain accommodation).

• Canouan Marina: A brand new luxury marina opened on the island (adjacent to the airport) which features 80 slips, six of which are for yachts up to 100 meters in length.

36 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

The accommodation at Pink Sands Club is special. I stayed in the one bedroom suite. It was oceanfront, with unobstructed views of the white sands, turquoise waters, lush island mountains, and the everchanging Caribbean skies with the most spectacular sunrises.

The suite featured a spa bathroom that is larger than most New York apartments. It came well equipped with a separate water closet, huge double marble vanity and immense soaker tub. Of course, toiletries and bath products were provided as well as Evian mineral water face mist, and other niceties. I am not known for my light packing abilities and I couldn’t fill up the three closets, valet and drawer space in the wardrobe area.

True to the name, there is a lot of pink in the suite and personally, I loved it. It was a deep tone of pink that felt right at home on Canouan Island. The large bedroom with king cloud-like bed and luxurious Pratesi Italian linens, was separated from the living room by a wall that featured a huge mirror, which magically turned into an embedded television. Then, at the touch of a button, the wall opened, offering magnificent ocean views directly from bed. There was a tablet that conveniently controlled everything in the suite.

My favorite part was the Italian inspired terrazza. Unlike dinky hotel balconies, this terrace is made for living. It opened wide to bring in the cool ocean breeze or closed tight to keep out the tropical midday heat. The restorative vistas had a healing effect on my highly stressed, over worked psyche.

#havefoodwilltravel MUST-SEE CITIES FOR FOODIES 5

Food is as good an excuse to travel as any and often the local cuisine is an adventure in itself. Food can tell stories of wars fought, lands colonized, cultures merged. Travel and food go hand in hand but, as the world becomes more accessible, where are the best cities for foodies?

As airfares decrease in price and the world’s farthest reaches become not-so-far-flung, food based travel is an increasingly popular option. The world’s greatest restaurants are more accessible than ever and the tastiest food and most refreshing drinks are just a plane hop away.

1. HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM

The hectic buzz and verve of Vietnam’s largest city is matched only by the vibrant nature of its cuisine. Drawing on its colonial history, Ho Chi Minh City blends French and Vietnamese flavors and styles. The famous sandwich, the banh mi, is just one such beautiful result of the European and Asian cultures coming together.

What really makes Ho Chi Minh stand out however, is the variety and quality of its regional street food. On every corner is another plume of smoke and steam erupting over a sizzling grill. Fantastic aromas and exotic flavors are to be found wherever you look.

38 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

2. SANTIAGO, CHILE

The food on offer in Chile’s capital city is highly dependent on the season, and as such, is always guaranteed to be the freshest around. The reliance on, and appreciation for, local ingredients gives the food in Santiago a very distinct style. Traditional flavors combined with contemporary techniques results in this South American culinary powerhouse being must-taste on any foodie world tour. Not to be missed is Barrio Bellavista, a Chilean neighborhood known for its street art, cafes and restaurants.

FOOD IS OUR COMMON GROUND JAMES BEARD

3. LONDON, UK

London has aggressively and triumphantly shaken off the UK’s poor post war culinary reputation. Top chefs from all around Europe and the world are flooding to the capital’s restaurants and the results are plain to see. Food from dozens of cultures and cuisines are on offer just a stone’s throw away from one another. From traditional pub grub to nouvelle cuisine, London has it all and more. The city is ever changing and the future looks bright - and tasty.

4. FLORENCE, ITALY

Florence is known as a city of culture, but its food more than holds its own beside the incredible architecture, art and history. The city’s many restaurants deal in mainly traditional fare, serving sauce-heavy pastas and thick slabs of bread. However, the food in modern Florence has shot into the 21st century with a delicious bang. Fine dining experiences can be found all over the city with unbeatable ingredients and Italy’s best chefs competing to give the intrepid foodie an unforgettable experience.

5. NEW ORLEANS, USA

North America’s entry on this list, like many other great foodie locales, has a culinary make-up inspired by numerous different cultures. Traces of a host of Caribbean flavors, as well as French, Native American, and African can be found in this historical melting pot. The spices from the various cultures combine with Louisiana’s freshest seafood to create an eating experience unlike any other.

how to save on your

HIGH SEAS

cruise vacation

Cruises are among the most popular of all vacations, and it is easy to understand why those seagoing getaways are so sought after. As hotel prices have continued to rise, cruises have become an even better value. When you consider that a 5-star hotel can cost upwards of $300-500 a night, it is easy to see why a deep discount cruise package is such an attractive value.

The fact that modern cruise liners are so impressive in scale, accommodations and amenities doesn’t hurt either. New cruise ships are like 5-star hotels that float from one port to another. Consumers have benefited as cruise companies have raced toward the newest, biggest and best ships on the sea.

The economy has also strangely benefited consumers who are anxious to try out a cruise vacation, as well as cruise enthusiasts who simply cannot wait to get back on the water. As the recession deepened, cruise companies began to offer better and better prices, translating to excellent value for savvy travelers.

If you are flexible with scheduling, you may be able to save even more money. The economy has resulted in some incredible sales, so you can hit the high seas for a week, for less than the cost of a few nights at a hotel. Also keep in mind the money saved on other vacation costs including rental cars, baggage handling, entertainment and meals. With a cruise vacation, especially a discount one, you unpack once, and your hotel moves with you.

If you yearn to experience the vacation of a lifetime at a price you can afford, consider look at great deals on 2017 cruises and see how vacationing on the water can save

money while delivered a memorable travel experience.

Working with a travel agency, in person or online, you may save you even more on the cruise of your dreams. While booking airfare on your own makes a lot of sense, sometimes it helps to have a professional in your corner when choosing a cruise line and a cabin. A good travel agency will have established partnerships with every cruise line in the industry, allowing it to create the trip of a lifetime at an unbelievable price. If you know how to shop, you can save a substantial amount of money on the vacation of your dreams.

Then there is last minute travel, and its associated discounts. If you are flexible with your travel plans, you may be able to save even more. Like hotel chains, cruise lines always have unsold inventory, and if they do not fill it they lose that revenue. Those cruise lines would rather sell those last remaining cruise cabins at a deep discount than miss out on

the revenue altogether. You may be able to land a real bargain simply by checking those last-minute deals and packing your bags.

Even if dropping everything and hitting the high seas is not your style, you can still find great deal. Cruise lines offer a number of special discounts aimed at many different demographics, from families and couples to older adults and members of professional

organizations and even employees of certain companies. Check with your employer - it just may save you money or qualify you for upgrades on your next cruise vacation.

It is easy to see why vacationing on the open sea is such a popular thing to do. If you are looking for your next great adventure, just check out what the cruise lines have to offer. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Less wrinkles mean less hassle when traveling from point A to point B and knowing what fabrics pack well is, well, half the battle.

FABRICS TO AVOID PACKING

Cotton is a ubiquitous fabric that feels good against the skin and is in everybody’s closet. A personal favorite! However, 100% cotton is one of the worst materials you can pack in a suitcase if you want to get to your destination unwrinkled. If you have to take pure cotton, roll it neatly in your suitcase to minimize wrinkles and opt for cotton blend. Avoid silk and linen at all costsboth are difficult enough to wear and look sharp even when you are not traveling!

With the advent of Athleisure and technical fabrics everywhere these days (for men and women) the delineation between casual and athletic wear and hybrid fabrications continues to be crossed and muddled. Good thing for stylish travelers that these clothes are suitcase friendly!

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK?

A good rule of thumb? Look for materials that are mixed with something synthetic in them like viscose,

rayon, nylon, spandex or Lycra. These will wrinkle less and won’t hold lines when you fold them. They are also what gives clothes that little bit of stretch which makes them more comfortable!

Here are my go-to fabrics and designers that are absolutely ready to travel!

JERSEY

Lightweight, elegant and will not wrinkle. My fave is the DVF iconic wrap in a modern romper. (right) Gold/ivory Celeste Two Banded Romper in 100% viscose.

POLYESTER & SPANDEX

Don’t be turned off by Polyester - it is no longer the same as those shirts that were popular in the 70’s at Studio 54. Polyester is so much more sophisticated these days and high end designers have blended it into dreamy travel options.

TECHNO COTTONS

Many companies offer an exceptional cotton shirt (men and women) that are great travel staples. Look for fabric like Brooks Brothers Supima® cotton broadcloth dobby, specially treated to resist wrinkles.

ERIC'S EXPERT TRIP TIPS:

• Upon arrival, unpack immediately. Never hang knitwear to avoid shoulder marks.

• For a quick refresher, hang items in bathroom and turn on hot shower to steam

• Bring a travel-size can of Static Guard or pack Bounce dryer sheet in your suitcase to eradicate static cling.

In 1964, then lover Richard Burton gave Casa Kimberly to Elizabeth Taylor as a birthday gift, and within the walls of this luxurious Mexican hacienda, the two shared a heady and hedonistic life, the essence of which still shines bright in Puerto Vallarta. • Attractions: You may feel the urge to hunker down and never leave Casa Kimberly (I certainly did!) but put aside at least one full day to explore this charming city, walk along the Malecon, and take a boat ride to Los Arcos for a little snorkelling.

its terracotta rooftops (one of my favorite things about PV), Casa Kimberly is nestled in the residential hillside neighborhood of Gringo Gulch, and offers discriminating guests an exquisite escape.

With just nine suites, the property boasts an inner courtyard, original swimming pool and terrace, spa, dining, bar and of course, all the old world Hollywood glamour you could ever want!

The fine dining restaurant, aptly named The Iguana Restaurant is open air, offering diners beautiful evening views of Puerto Vallarta, and a menu that expertly blends delicious regional and continental fine cuisine. Luckily, even if you cannot stay overnight, The Iguana is open to the public by reservation.

Named after Elizabeth Taylor’s starring role in National Velvet, the 1944 movie that truly made her famous, we stayed in The Velvet Suite and it was magnificent.

Our bedroom (previous page) featured a stunning carved bed and antique early 19th century decor including crystal chandeliers and oriental rugs. Even the massive clawfoot tub in the opulent bathroom offered breathtaking views from a soaking position.

Large wooden paned sliding doors lead to an incredible terrace (opposite page) with a raised 2-person Jacuzzi and stellar views of Banderas Bay and the city of Puerto Vallarta below. End of day is a special time here. In fact, this room could have been named The Velvet Suite because of the way the velvety, warm sun washes over the terrace at sunset.

JUST LIKE ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND RICHARD BURTON’S LEGENDARY LOVE AFFAIR, CASA KIMBERLY IS A RARE FIND IN AN OTHERWISE ORDINARY WORLD.

The famous Lover’s Arch, which allowed Taylor and Burton to move freely, from one side of the property to the other, away from paparazzi and prying eyes, remains intact and original.

Casa Kimberly is a place of silver screen history, modern elegance and amenities that are world-class. It is a new way to experience charming Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to sleep, swim and live where Hollywood royalty once did.

TASMANIA’S AUSTRALIA EAST COAST

The term “pictures do not do justice” was probably invented here on the magically scenic East Coast of Tasmania. So put down your smart phone, and truly let your eyes wander this heart shaped island, located on the edge of the world. With a tragic past, Tasmania exudes a mysterious wisdom and wondrous energy unlike any other.

Start your road trip up the coast in the capital of Hobart; a port city with historic architecture, the narrowest streets and a diverse artistic population. A city of contrast combining heritage charm with modern living, locals live only a short drive away from some of the world’s most alluring coastal beaches and endless pristine landscapes. For local “tassies”, February is the end of summer and beginning of a new work or school year, but for travelers it is a time of vacant roads and secluded raw landscapes. It may be one of the world’s most underrated destinations so be sure to go before the rest of the world clues in.

ROAD TRIPPING IN TASMANIA IS ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY

If there is one thing you should know about road tripping in Tasmania: it is all about the journey. In other words, strive to become a Tasmanian sponge and submerse yourself into exploring the island. Through corridors of green, the dramatic windy roads offer vantage points to uninhabited turquoise coasts.

Past the small community of Swansea lies Freycinet National Park, home to one of the most magnificent and picturesque locales, Wineglass Bay. Opt for the trek down to the beach instead of the lookout. You will need to walk the beach to truly feel the magic of this secluded hot spot. The walk is worth the legwork of one hour from the car park. Besides, if you have been sitting in the car it’s a great opportunity to stretch your legs.

With the rugged backdrop of the Hazzards, a series of jagged red and pink tinted granite peaks, you should devote an entire day just to explore here. If you want to spend a few days, there are many amenities accessible including camping, hostels, equipped cabins or the ultimate retreat, Saffire Freycinet which has been named Australia’s top luxury hotel.

Hop out of your vehicle and roam the soft white and squeaky sand floors of Binalong Bay. On the south side of the beach lays the Bay of Fires which may feel like the Caribbean, except swap the palm

trees for Tasmania’s majestic gum trees. Given the name in 1773 by Captain Tobias Furneaux for the burnt orangehued granite boulders hugging the coast that contrast against the clear blue waters. Here you can post up for the night at the Bay of Fires Conservation Area which offers beach-side camping with dreamy views of acacia trees and the sea.

Not far away lies the largest town on the north-east coast, St. Helens. As the state’s second largest fishing port, seafood does not have to swim far to your plate. Local family owned pizzeria, Timboli’s serves up an Italian classic, pizza topped with mouthwatering seafood – and yes, I recommend ordering a large pie. To walk off the copious amounts of cheese, grab your sneakers and explore the spectacular hour long

walk to St. Helens Point and the Peron Dunes, where you can run around pretending you are in the Sahara Desert or simply enjoy the sunset from a bed of sand.

Off the Tasmanian Coast are many surrounding islands that are lush with nature and wildlife. Take a thirty minute ferry ride to Maria Island National Park, where native animals roam freely and pieces of the island’s criminal past remain. Pack a picnic and wander the island to see ruins of the mess room, barn, chapel and prison cells - all dating back to the Darlington convict settlement of 1825.

who came to the island in 1777 and carved his initials in a tree that burnt down in 1905 and was replaced with the plaque. Since the 1920’s, Bruny has become infamous for a holiday hot spot with hiking trails, surfing beaches, ancient caves and a small friendly local community.

In total, North Bruny and South Bruny together have nine coastal enclaves with the most popular being Adventure Bay. Dip into Hotel Bruny, where freshness and food made on premises is their specialty. Try the fish of the day, caught by local fishermen Dave and Ross, who bring in an exclusive ‘catch of the day’ that is always changes

When you return to Hobart you can catch a quick passenger ferry over to Bruny, the apple island that exemplifies the term “room to roam”. Consisting of two land masses joined by a long narrow isthmus, the island was inhabited by the Tasmania Aborigines until European arrival. Visit a plaque dedicated to Explorer James Cook

and is paired with Bruny Island’s original cider. Food for the body and food for the mind; indulge your inner creative self on an island that welcomes you as a local yourself.

A taste of Tasmania is all one needs to spark a connection with this heart shaped island and a promise to return not too far in the future.

QIN SHI HUANG’S TERRACOTTA ARMY

60 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

The first emperor of a unified China, Qin Shi Huang, reveled in truth and beauty. Consider the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army. However, he loathed aging and deeply feared death. Sometimes people who fear death feel a need to control everything, and not surprisingly Qin Shi Huang was known as much for his creations as he was for his tyranny.

As emperor, Qin Shi Huang reorganized the bureaucracy, built a network of roads, simplified the Chinese script, standardized weights and measures, and minted new copper coin. Still, the Qin Empire faced recurring threats by Xiongnu nomads to the north. To fend off the Xiongnu, Qin Shi Huang ordered the construction of an enormous defensive wall, which formed the first section of what would become the Great Wall of China. Unfortunately the Great Wall couldn’t save Qin Shi Huang from aging and he became obsessed with living forever. He ordered court doctors to concoct potions to keep him alive. As a failsafe, he also ordered the construction of an enormous tomb for himself, which came equipped with molten rivers and an army of some 8,000 life-sized terracotta clay warriors to be placed in the tomb, along with terracotta horses, real chariots and bronze weapons. The emperor died in 210 BC at age 49, and today, his legacy continues to live on in the magnificent and mysterious buried city of death.

The exquisite Terracotta Army was discovered on March 29, 1974, to the east of Xi’an in Shaanxi province by farmers who were digging a well at the foot of Mount Li, a location favored for its underground springs, gold and glimmering jade.

According to the Shiji, or “Records of the Grand Historian,” the mausoleum precinct (city of death) began construction shortly after Qin Shi Huang became king, and continued until shortly after his death.

Qin Shi Huang had four pits excavated to house the terracotta army, although only three were filled by the time construction ceased. Pit 1 is the largest pit, Pit 2 is the most spectacular, and Pit 3 houses the command headquarters. Traces of Chinese purple and other colors may be seen on some of the half solid/half hollow terracotta warriors, and the bronze swords unearthed in Pit 2 remain sharp and surprisingly pliable. When a 331-pound terracotta warrior was removed from one of these swords, the sword slowly returned to its original shape. Scientific studies concluded that the Qin swords were coated with chrome, which is interesting since chrome oxidation is a relatively recent phenomenon. How did Chinese ancestors do it more than 2,000 years ago?

Qin Shi Huang

Ancestral name: Ying 嬴

Clan name: Zhao 趙

Given name: Zheng 政

Qin Shi Huang was the king of the Chinese State of Qin from 246 BC to 221 BC [Warring States Period] and the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC.

In 2007 and 2008, the British Museum in London displayed a collection of 120 objects and 20 terracotta warriors in an exhibition titled The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army. For seven months, visitors flocked to the museum in herds to marvel at the extraordinary casting techniques and artistic abilities that dominated the ancient Qin Empire. Today, visitors are making trips to China to visit the Terracotta Army .

If you go to China: The Terracotta Army Museum, located in Xi’an, in West China’s Shaanxi Province, has become one of the country’s most popular attractions, and it will be crowded no matter when you go. However, avoid the Chinese National Day Holiday and Labor Day Holiday. Start early in the day and allow for several hours of viewing time.
