••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Welcome to Waxhaw! As we enter a new year, I’m looking forward to leading the Town of Waxhaw as Mayor again.
Having served in both municipal and corporate leadership positions throughout my career, I’ve brought over 40 years of leadership experience to the office of Mayor. My experience brings a wealth of knowledge of building relationships, developing a clear vision, and exercising strong communication skills to share that vision. Keeping residents involved and engaged in town leadership’s decision-making process is pivotal to my role as Mayor. During my first year as Mayor, while in a global pandemic, the Town staff and Board members didn’t slow down. As a team, we worked extensively to activate plans that had been discussed but had yet to be put into motion for many years. We know our residents are passionate about infrastructure, a new downtown park, and transparency. We’ve taken strides to improve and have better visibility in each area with a new Land Development Code and a revised Town Master Plan. We’ve made sure you can find Waxhaw project updates at any time on our website. We will also be launching a new website in 2021, which will make it easier to find information and report concerns. If you are looking to move to Waxhaw or have just moved here, Waxhaw has much to offer. My wife and I love all that our community offers: a vibrant arts community, unique shops and boutiques, and diverse cuisine partnered with professional business services. I understand family, safety, and growth values, and I aim to create a dynamic and beautiful growing Waxhaw for years to come. I look forward to working together with the Board of Commissioners, Town staff, and residents to create a well planned and beautiful Waxhaw.

My family and I, who have lived here for over 15 years, enjoy the extensive variety of activities available to us in Waxhaw. WHERE IS WAXHAW Waxhaw is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and nestled in the southwest corner of Union County. Located within 20 miles of Charlotte, NC, Residents are fortunate to be able to tap into the nearby big-city amenities. Waxhaw is also very close to the border of South Carolina - approximately two miles. Access to Waxhaw is made easy by NC Hwy 75 and NC Hwy 16 which intersect at the center of Waxhaw’s downtown area. There’s also easy access to the major interstate systems of I-485, I-85 and I-77, making regional travel to the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Carolina beaches accessible within a couple of hours by car. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, ranked among the top 10 busiest airports in the world based on passenger totals, can typically be reached within 40 minutes.

Water Tower
This iconic 49,000 stainless-steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to the intersection of NC 75 and NC 16 and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. Pedestrian Bridge Sometimes a bridge is more than just a way to get from Point A to Point B. It can be a landmark like the pedestrian bridge located in the heart of downtown. This town icon was built in 1888 when the railroad company constructed a rail line to Atlanta. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge and watch as a train passes under their feet. Downtown Waxhaw
Military Wall of Honor
This all brick structure salutes the brave men and women who have defended the freedoms we enjoy. The annual Memorial Day, 9/11 Patriot Day, and Veteran’s Day celebrations take place here as well as other special activities throughout the year. The wall is maintained by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 208 Waxhaw. Museum of the Waxhaws This museum is brimming with collections that tell story upon story of the humble beginnings of the Land of the Waxhaws. Learn about the Waxhaw Indians and the European settlers who gave birth to this burgeoning community. Full of History
Duncan McDonald House
The history of Waxhaw is one that began with an Indian tribe that once inhabitated this area.
This area was home to the Waxhaw Indians long before the European settlers came to the area. The Waxhaw Indians were allied with the Catawbas in their wars with the Cherokee and were almost wiped out in 1715 by the Yamasee War and by diseases brought by the early settlers to the area. Soon afterwards German, English, Scottish, Welsh and other European settlers arrived in the area to establish a settlement. The land was fertile and trade was made easy by the proximity of the Catawba River and the main trading path which ran from Petersburg, Virginia to Augusta, Georgia. The Town of Waxhaw was chartered in 1889, making it the third oldest town in Union County. Even though Waxhaw is one of the oldest communities in Union County it wasn't well known until 1888 when railroad tracks from Atlanta were laid. It was clear that this area needed a dependable means of overland transportation. It was increasingly difficult to deliver and receive goods to and from the supply centers in the south.
The Duncan McDonald House was built by Waxhaw's first post-master in 1888 and now acts as a characteristic recreation venue. At one time the town’s early switchboard was operated from this house. Waxhaw Library Waxhaw Branch Library has over 17,000 items, including books, DVDs, videos, books on tape and CD, young adult books, genealogy, CDs, magazines, newspapers and more. There are seven computers for adults and two computers for children, in addition to two online public access computers. Today, Waxhaw is a vibrant community that has progressed from those humble beginnings. It has come a long way from it’s early roots as indian land and still takes the time to proudly remember its past. The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States. President Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart, but because the state line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. Jackson lived in North Carolina until he moved west to Tennessee, at the age of 21. 12

variety of books at discounted prices. The bookstore accepts used book donations and inturn resells the books to the public. The Meeting Place Once known as the Waxhaw Police Department, The Meeting Place is a rentable recreation meeting room that accommodates 25. It includes a bathroom, kitchenette area, mounted flat-screen television monitor, tables, and chairs. The Meeting Place is perfect for family gatherings and community meetings. Located next to the David G. Barnes Children's Park
Jug & Well The large clay urn was originally used at the Rodman-Heath Mill which played a vital role in the town’s economy for many years. The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use until the 1920’s. The current well replica, built in 1989, commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot.

Patriotic Ceremonies The Town of Waxhaw is steeped in military history and very proud of its military service members, both past and present. Local military personnel are honored on Memorial Day, 9/11 Patriot Day and Veteran's Day with a remembrance ceremony at the Military Wall of Honor in downtown Waxhaw. Held the 2nd Saturday in December, the Wreaths Across America event pays tribute to US Veterans by placing wreaths on military graves in the Town cemetery. With a strong partnership between the Town of Waxhaw, American Legion and local business leaders, each ceremony is educational in nature. Everyone is welcome to attend these free events.
Independence Day Celebration Waxhaw is perhaps best known for its July 4th Parade. This hometown parade takes place through historic downtown Waxhaw and is attended by enthusiastic revelers. Wreaths Across America is a great ceremonial event that honors and remembers fallen military veterans who have supported and defended our great nation. The Parkwood JROTC, the Union County Composite Squadron (Cival Air Patrol), along with the Town of Waxhaw are proud sponsors of this annual nationwide event. Santa's Ride Thru the Neighborhoods is a partnership with the North Pole, the Town of Waxhaw and the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department. Horse Community & Greenway Trails Attract Riders to Waxhaw Union County has the largest equine population (by county) in North Carolina Waxhaw has a long timeline of equestrian history. The original inhabitants of the region were a Native American group known as the Waxhaws (originally called the Wysacky). The tribes involvement in the Yamasee War led to their destruction and the freeing of their land for European settlement. The area was first settled by European-Americans in the mid-eighteenth century. Most settlers were primarily of Scots-Irish origin. These settlers became subsistence farmers and horses were an integral part of their daily life. The equestrian lifestyle is still part of this area's tradition. This close-knit community is full of many equestrian lovers who have discovered the lands splendor with an abundance of equestrian farms and horse-friendly neighborhoods. Warm sun and a relaxed lifestyle make Waxhaw a favorite for horse lovers. The area has picturesque barns, gentle topography, rolling meadows and miles of trails, which gives oodles of horse people time to explore them with their favorite gentle giant. Living in a horse loving community allows equine enthusiasts to share their passion with other horse lovers and enjoy quick access to stables, riding trails, and equestrian activities. No matter what kind of riding you do - English or Western, dressage or eventing, trail riding or just for pleasure, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more vibrant horse culture. Located between Waxhaw and Monroe on Highway 7, the Mineral Springs Greenway is a quaint trail system that runs through the area and is the perfect place for a ride among other enthusiastic horsemen and women. Horses, joggers and mountain bikers enjoy this serene 1.7 mile out-and-back natural surface trail
as it follows along a creek through some nice forested areas. Just south of Waxhaw is Cane Creek Park which offers miles of trails for horseback riding. This Union County park encompasses 1,050 acres of land and surrounds a 350-acre lake that is peaceful and well maintained. For those who aren’t lucky enough to call Waxhaw home, it’s a short distance from Charlotte for a quick escape from the city, and far enough to provide a peaceful and charming ride. Suspension Bridge Waxhaw is home to the Carolina Thread Trail's signature Cross-State Suspension Bridge! This 170-foot long bridge crosses over 12 Mile Creek and connects North Carolina and South Carolina along the Carolina Thread Trail. Spend a few hours or the whole day with nature at this hidden gem. Situated on 1,050 acres of land, this is the largest recreation facility in the county and maintained by the Union County Parks and Recreation Department. Activities available to the public include hiking trails, bike trails, camp sites, boat rentals, beach and swimming area, volleyball courts, and a miniature golf course. The 350-acre lake, is home to some of the best largemouth bass fishing in the state as well as bluegill, crappie, and catfish.
Waxhaw Athletic Association The WAA is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization offering athletic instruction with both competitive/ advanced levels & rec programs, camps, and clinics. Baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, football and cheerleading are offered. Young athletes can are taught to foster teamwork and emphasize good sportsmanship in a safe, supervised, competitive league structure. Parent and volunteer involvement is encouraged. Yearly fees are charged to help defray costs, and public fundraising is conducted to ensure that all interested children, regardless of their financial resources or athletic ability, are eligible to participate. Andrew Jackson State Park Located just south of Waxhaw, in Lancaster County, SC, this state park is dedicated to the U.S. President, Andrew Jackson. Apply for a License All dogs, over the age of 4 months, within the vicinity of Waxhaw are required to be licensed by the town on an annual basis. Upon licensing an animal, the owner must show proof that the animal is current on rabies vaccinations and proof of spay or neuter is also required, if applicable. Your dog’s metal license tag is permanently assigned, and should be worn on the collar at all times. When renewing your dog’s license in 2021, you will not receive a new metal license tag unless a replacement tag is specifically ordered at time of renewal. Replacement tags are $4.20.

Fear Free Animal Hospital Design [ Dr. Susan Bonilla, MS, CVA, CCRP, CACP ]
You may have recently heard the term Fear Free from a friend or seen it advertised. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Marty Becker, it comprises a group of different veterinarian professionals and pet experts gathered together for the single purpose of preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the veterinary professionals and people who care for them. Since its inception, over 30,000 veterinary and pet professionals have committed to becoming Fear Free certified. In 2019, Passionate Paws Animal Hospital proudly joined an elite group of practices to attain the honored distinction of becoming a Fear Free Certified Practice. This certification means that all our doctors and team members on staff, including our groomers, are all individually trained as Fear Free professionals. Being Fear Free certified validates much of what we have already practiced since opening over four years ago. Fear Free certified practices will have successfully implemented Fear Free into all aspects of their business: culture and leadership, client education, staff training, the facility, and most importantly, patient visits. My husband and I built our hospital for pet parents because we are pet parents and so is everyone on our team. We set out to create a unique experience for both pets and pet parents that put your furbaby at the center, promoted and delivered a Fear Free experience, provided integrative pet healthcare, and partnered with you as the primary caregiver in developing customized treatment plans. When we started our design, we knew nothing of the Fear Free program, we just knew there had to be a better experience for pets and pet parents than the traditional vet visit so many of us have experienced in the past. A visit to the vet should be pleasant and fun, not stressful and fearful. In order to do this we completely reinvented the look, feel, and even smell that has long been associated with a typical animal hospital. But, we didn’t stop at design. We also reexamined our approach to patient care and pet parent service to ensure a calm, pleasant, and fun experience for pets and pet parents alike. At Passionate Paws, we strive to make every patient visit a Fear Free experience as every team member wants your pet to be happy when he or she walks through the door of our animal hospital. Free Free doesn’t mean that your pet will never experience anything uncomfortable at our hospital—he or she may be injured or ill, after all—but it does mean that we make every effort to reduce any fear, anxiety, and stress related to examinations, procedures, and grooming. Here are a few of the ways we help your pet stay comfortable and relaxed from arrival to departure. When you first arrive at our hospital your senses and your pet’s will be greeted with pleasing smells from our aromatherapy diffuser, designed to calm and relieve anxiety. No hospital should smell like an animal hospital, and ours never does. To ease our patients even more, we have designed our waiting area to be species specific, with cats and dogs on opposite sides. Taking it one step further, we built a cat-only exam room (no dogs allowed) to provide an added layer of calmness for our feline friends. For those dogs that are a bit more nervous, we can bring you right away into our side door that leads directly into an exam room. For our anxious cats, we can bring them directly into the cat-only exam room upon arrival. Upon entering the exam room, you and your pet will notice that performing exams on a cold, slick table are a thing of the past. For our dog patients, we provide comfortable bedding on the floor, where our medical team conducts the majority of their examina-

DID YOU KNOW Fun Facts About Waxhaw and Surrounding Areas
JOHN LAWSON John was a young Englishman who was commissioned to travel the Carolinas backcountry. The trip took nearly two months and crossed over 500 miles. In December, 1700, Mr. Lawson started his hike on Pamlico Sound with several colonist friends. He wrote vivid descriptions about the land he crossed and the people he met in his journals, including information about the Waxhaw area.
GOLD MINES There have been 40 gold mines in Union County since it was formed in 1842. In the early years, area farm laborers and tenant farmers would work in the mines during the farming off-season. Howie Gold Mine in Waxhaw started in the 1840’s. There are several shafts with depths up to 400 feet. It’s known as one of the states largest and most productive mines until it closed in 1942. At its apex, the mine employed about 100 men. 34

Mr. Davie was born in England, but immigrated to the American colonies in 1763 when his father brought him to the Waxhaw region. He was a military officer who led an attack against the British during the Revolutionary War. Davie later became the 10th Governor of NC, as well as one of the founders of the University of North Carolina. He is buried at the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church.
Born in 1850, Mr. Rodman became one of Waxhaws most prominent, influential, and wealthiest residents. He was a local farmer, businessman and banker who was very well-liked and respected. He helped build the Rodman-Heath Cotton Mill and Waxhaw Banking and Trust Company. John built and lived in this Victorian-style home which sits just north of the pedestrian bridge.
Built in 1898 by John Lafayette Rodman, Sr., and E.J. Heath, this mill was Waxhaw’s largest employer from 1898 to 1946. As many as 300 people were employed at one time. The property was abandonded from 1946-1960. Today, the former cotton mill has been renovated into modern residential apartments and several commercial business spaces, including a popular dining establishment.

Steph is a three-time NBA champion and six-time NBA All-Star who once owned a home in Waxhaw. Curry purchased the 7,650 sq. ft. home in 2011. Located in a guarded community, the sprawling house includes four bedrooms, a movie theater, wine cellar, exercise room, and game room with a wet bar. In 2019, he and his wife sold the property for $1.21 Million
Kristen is known for co-writing the songs for the 2013 animated film Frozen with her husband Robert Lopez. Kristen and her husband have won Academy Awards for “Let It Go” from Frozen and “Remember Me” from Coco. She has also won two Grammy Awards. In 1990 her family moved to Waxhaw from Charlotte. Although she went to college and moved away, her parents still live here.
Steve is a former NFL wide receiver who currently lives in the Longview subdivision in Waxhaw. He played professional football for 16 seasons, primarily with the Carolina Panthers, before ending his career with the Baltimore Ravens. Smith was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and threetime All Pro. He bought the house in 2012 after his previous house sold for $1.8 Million.
