BLA, BLA, BLA EDITOR’S LETTER TEXT: ANDREAS SIMON

DON’T DRUG AND DIE

DROGAS Y CONDUCCIÓN NO

Drugs have always played a big role in human history, and not only in ours, as well some animals love to take a break from their daily routine sometimes. But what is considered a drug? Wikipedia says: A drug, broadly speaking, is any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. We normally divide them in soft and hard drugs, depending on their level of addictiveness which is experienced differently by each human being. All those substances have one very important factor in common: with whatever you alter your normal bodily function will have a countereffect when coming down from it. In case of heroine it is called a ‘cold turkey’ and those who have experienced it know that it is something you will never want to go through. And there is where addiction starts - your body and mind are screaming to return to the altered state, causing a terrible gap between the high and the down. The longer you persist in altering your state the deeper will be the countereffect. There is nothing wrong with taking drugs, as long as you accept that it is no normal state and you will always have to return to reality (as we know it :-)). The dose makes the poison, means that a substance can produce the harmful effect associated with its toxic properties only if it reaches a susceptible biological system within the body in a high enough concentration (dose). Ibiza is well known for its excessive parties and let’s be honest - we all love to get lost if the party is worth it but remember - the mother of excess is not joy but joylessness. It is far better to enjoy the party with a reasonable flush then waking up the next day thinking ‘I did WHAT last night?’. And the commonly opinion that music and drugs are necessarily connected is completely wrong - music IS the drug. One last very important thing: There are people out there feeling joy and fun in putting drugs in other people’s glasses, be it out of fun or more sadistic reasons. Always watch your glass or if possible drink from a bottle, in England some clubs give out plastic caps to avoid abuse. And if you see somebody doing it call the security. It is the same as in every aspect of live - be responsible for your actions, respect the freedom of others and you will be fine. Now go out, blow your mind and have the time of your life - you are in one heavy party capital that is Ibiza.

ANOTHER IBIZA 24/7 This year it seems that Ibiza is flooded by Ipad Addicts, Silicon Valleys, Steroid Bullets, Fashion Victims, Rich Kids and other mutations of modern society. Playa d’en Bossa seems the place to be and fun is proportional to the money you spend in one night. This is not the real Ibiza, the one we love so much, the one that made us come and make a living here. This mini guide will show you some other sides of Ibiza, if you want to explore a different island in your holidays than the glamorous one then you should go on reading. If you find yourself in one of the descriptions above then you better stay where you are. All the places are impossible to do in one day because of the distances but imagine you could beam then this would be a perfect day in paradise. To start the day we recommend to drive to Cala d’Hort and take the small road just before you drive down to the actual beach to the left, go straight until you reach the platform in front of Es Vedra. Sit down and do some meditation, eventually some yoga - this will recharge your batteries. After that you need some healthy food, try Es Tap Nou in the center of Ibiza town, Calle Madrid, and choose different veggies or fruits to convert them in a fresh juice or salad. Going to the beach and not having to queue up for a couch is a real privilege... We recommend you drive to Jesus, take the road to Talamanca and go left on half way - if you see a sports stadium to your right you are on the way - drive up the mountain until you see a sign ‘PK2’ to your right, follow the camino all the way down, always straight, until you reach a beach called s’Estanyol. This year Diesel converted it into ‘Diesel Island’, home of the brave - you will find a relaxed beach with good food, coolest music and fresh drinks. Perfect to get the necessary tan and a bright smile on your face. If you are into partying at daytime try the Club Punta Arabi in Es Canar on a tuesday, there you will find the guys from The Pleiadians offering incredible line-ups by the pool, definitely one of the coolest places this summer. Already way after noon and Ibiza is well known for its incredible sunsets - if you like to see it different try the ‘puertas del cielo’ - heavens gate - drive to Santa Ines, when you arrive take a left (the only one possible :-)) and follow the narrow road until you see a little bar on the right, park your car and walk to the left alongside the rocks. After approx. 10 minutes you will come to a corner that opens your view almost 180 degrees, sit down and enjoy the incredible view over the sea. It is called Heavens Gate because it’s difficult to see where the sea ends and the sky begins. Night crawls in and the port of Ibiza starts to vibrate, go get some outfit for the night. An incredible experience is Vicente Ganesha, if you don’t find somethin in there you are on the wrong IBIZASUNSET TOWN VIEW AT HEAVENS FROM HARBOUR GATE

island... Vintage clothing, crazy accessoires, even rare furniture is to be found there. Food... If you like mediterrasian fusion go to Playa d’en Bossa and ask for Mumak, it is almost on the beach, executed by the guys from Kumharas. Just opened, it will be one of the restaurants open all year round to meet the Ibiza family. They do as well a take away - if you are in a rush... Night time is the right time. Ibiza is THE party capital in summer and there is so much to choose from it almost hurts. If you want to start it right go get some cocktails straying through the port of Ibiza, there you will find so many spots that one will definitely suit you. Clubbing comes next, apart from the big five there are some really cool options, we recommend Underground, an old finca converted into a real club that will blow your mind. Try it on a friday or saturday, a relatively small club with killer lineups hardly announced and a big garden to sit outside and chat to some cool drinks. Time to go to bed - drive down to Salinas, if you are lucky you will find a room in the BHS - BoutiqueHostalSalinas - when you arrive to the last roundabout before Salinas take a right, after 50 meters you will find it on the right. Eleven rooms and an impeccable service will serve your needs. This was a very special recommendation without any ranking, just my personal choice to explore a different Ibiza that will stay in your mind without blowing your wallet but your brain. If you liked it feel free to contact us at info@dubibiza.com, telling us your experience. And always remember the three D’s, Dont Drug n Drive - it is your responsability. BOUTIQUE HOSTAL SALINAS

SPACE BAR

MUMAK

DIESEL ISLAND AT S’ESTANYOL

QUALITY NEVER PROSTITUTES The best things in life are for free - health, love, friendship, happiness, freedom are the most important ones but there are lots more. Our society is built upon a system that equalizes value with money - in almost every sense. If your wallet is packed with bills you are somebody, if you own a black American Express you are somebody, if your bank gives you credit you are somebody, if you drive a luxury car you are somebody, if your Rolex is real and your suit costs more than your rent you are somebody - wherever this money comes from. Peter Drucker once said that ‘Business is other people’s money’ and i guess he is right... But if you work every day to pay the running costs, have a decent job and pay taxes to finance a country that is not able to govern you like it should then you are nobody. And if you loose that job you are less than nobody, you become a burden for our society. Television feeds our brains 24 hours and 99% of it is absolute bullshit. News are filtered to give you only classified information to support our system, TV shows mostly consist of information to show you that others have massive problems or suffer for some stupid reason to make you feel better because you still did not touch base. The internet converts us in experts in politics, science and social issues supposing to know everything that happens on our so small planet. Google and Co. have the answer to anything, Facebook and its followers make friends and Twitter and Co. give you a voice to spread all the fake information in order to align our minds. Advertising agencies are experts in manipulation, Edward Bernays was the founder of the word ‘Public Relation’ in the late 1920’s, and it only has this name because ‘Propaganda’ was later misused by the Nazis so he could not go on using this term. ‘Make the masses believe they need something and they will go for it’ was the philosophy behind it - and it works until today. In 1929 American Tobacco commisioned Bernays to change the public opinion that smoking women are not fashionable - so he hired a bunch of beautiful american models to walk down Fifth Avenue on the Easter Parade and smoke cigarettes. The day before he told the press that at the parade some feminists would light ‘torches of freedom’ resulting in the next day’s 16

newspapers all published the foto on their frontpages. Over night smoking women became a symbol of freedom and the sales exploded - well done Mr. Bernays. This is a perfect example of mass manipulation and 1929 was a looong time ago - methods today are far more subliminal. You may think we live in a free world and all our decisions are made out of conviction - let’s think that over twice... In the deepest meaning you are absolutely right, we do live in a free world and are free to decide - the art is not to be influenced by the whole system and to build up your own mind, make your own decisions based on truth, wisdom and intelligence. We can not measure good or bad work in how much is being paid for it, the monetary system is not at all suitable when it comes to assign the value of it. Other big allies to our system are envy and greed, Ricardo Villalobos said in his interview we can only be creative if we step out of competition, it is impossible to compare yourself with others as we are all the same yet different. Being friendly and helpful is often considered as weakness, our ellbowsociety creates monsters ready to damnify all those crossing their way to social stardom. The worst are those who are ready to sacrifice their dignity in order to nobble their competitors. You find examples everywhere, some of them are so obvious it hurts. There are magazines being published every day and night, selling content and advertisements at lowest rates filling their empty pages to seem professional enough to attract more clients. To all publishers, do a decent job and print something useful, good clients will come along sooner or later because it is worth reading. There are DJs disposed to play for some drinks and clubowners welcoming them to capitalize this art for their own benefits. To all DJs, if you need to practice or are in need of making money then get a proper job and do the DJing for free - drinks must be included anyway - but don’t sell yourself below value. There are employers threatening their employees with the simple fact that there are hundreds of others waiting ready to do the job for less - and it works for them. To all employers, not one single company survived this for a long time, they all go down the drain. Respect your employees and treat them well, they will appreciate it.

If we all agree to that sellout we are not worth a dime - in its true meaning. We will ALL be replaced by machines that can do any job even better because they can work 24 hours and do not complain. We all should not forget the following: Intelligence is the mother of life, intuition its father, quality the base of everything, dignity makes it worth living, creativity shapes it, courage ignites the action, gratitude fuels it, faith is the drive and love converts it to eternity. And be careful all you ignorants out there, a famous quote from Mother Theresa says: We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much with so little for so long, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. This one is only for the brave, the unbending, the true spirits. BY THE WAY - QNP IS DUB UPSIDE DOWN.

THE PIRATE’S PHILOSOPHY

FILOSOFIA DE PIRATAS

Pirates, brave warriors and disciples of the sea, have always been lovers of liberty. Those who were unable to live under laws and societal constraints made their way finding adventure. Between them, there was no racism; all nationalities and races worked together, respecting courage above origin and all else. They formed associations that were responsible for compensating losses related to injury or death, as well as punishing infractions. In forming these groups they protected and helped each other out when attacking other ships or harbours. Formentera, which was an Arab pirate base for centuries, remained uninhabited until the XVIII century as a result of related attacks. Ibiza is the only place in the world with a monument dedicated to the corsairs sailors who had a contract with the king called a „course patent“. This allowed them to attack and capture enemy ships under the condition that they would give a percentage of the earnings to the Royal treasury.

Looking around at the kaleidoscopic effect of the magic lantern show we normally think of as the world, specifically the world of human society and its relationship to the cosmos, particularly the cosmos and how it affects this planet, the tendency, as an observer, is to seek common denominators in the midst of the swirl of information governing our lives, in order to make sense of it all. And one such common denominator is the sense – and I accept this my subjective view but propose that I’m right in any case – that people everywhere are struggling to keep up – keep up with each other, keep up with the changes in the financial, social, economic, political, geological and ecological structures we’ve grown accustomed to and have assumed (incorrectly) were permanent states to be relied on. On the one hand, this drive may well relate to the Darwinian notion of the survival of the fittest, on the other it may well be more profound even than that: because it seems we’re instinctually responding to an increase of frequency in the sound wave both emitted by and subtending the Earth in its material form. This is the infamous Schumann Resonance, actually discovered by Nicola Tesla, normally observed at a frequency of 7.83 Hz, but which over recent years has shot up to 20 Hz and is still apparently rising exponentially. And it is to this phenomenon that both clued in mystics and clued in physicists are attributing the recent notable increase of socalled psychic skills and the rapid spread of enlightened, awake consciousness. If anything I’m of the former camp so will not attempt here to wax scientific on you – there are plenty of sources whence to feed your scientific inquisitiveness on this topic, some of which are included at the end of this piece – but in light of what’s been 38

described as humanity’s current transition from the age of matter to the age of frequency and with hum of all the 2012 prophesies rattling the airwaves, my purpose in writing this is to point out the possibility, or more likely probability, that if you want to stay in the game at this time, if you want to thrive on, let alone survive this transition, it would seem you’ll be needing to ensure your personal frequency is rising to match the Earth’s. To wit, I propose a reprise of the ancient methods for doing so, developed by mystics from the East many thousands of years ago to aid their attunement to the ineffable source of existence and thereby gain and maintain the enlightened transcendent state while engaged in the obligatory swirl of mundane activity. Namely, that aside from paying attention to overcoming your baser greed-, lust-, and fear-driven urges and supplanting these with the purer drive to alleviate suffering and ameliorate conditions for all sentient beings, it would benefit you to spend at least four minutes daily chanting the ancient chakra-activation sounds as follows (chakra is the Sanskrit word for wheel, denoting seven discrete transformers within the body, along the spinal pathway which change your base energies to progressively higher frequencies within): 1 -FOCUS ON YOUR ROOT CHAKRA IN THE PELVIC FLOOR AND CHANT THE SOUND, EEEEEEEEE THREE TIMES. 2 – FOCUS ON YOUR UMBILICUS (BELLY BUTTON) CHAKRA AND CHANT THE SOUND, EHHHHHHH (LIKE AIR BUT WITH NO ‘R’) THREE TIMES. 3 – FOCUS ON YOUR SOLAR PLEXUS (UPPER ABDOMEN) AND CHANT THE SOUND, OHHHHHHH (AS IN MOAN) THREE TIMES.

SHAKE A CHAKRA TEXT: ANDREAS SIMON // PHOTO: DANIELA, SANDRA

4 – FOCUS ON YOUR HEART CHAKRA (IN THE CENTER OF THE BREASTBONE) AND CHANT THE SOUND, AHHHHHHH (AS IN ART) THREE TIMES. 5 – FOCUS ON YOUR THROAT CHAKRA (AT THE BASE OF THE THROAT) AND CHANT THE SOUND, AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (AS IN GATE) SIX TIMES. 6 – FOCUS ON YOUR THIRD EYE CHAKRA (IN THE CENTER OF THE BRAIN) AND CHANT THE SOUND, UUUUUUUUUUU (AS IN YOU) SIX TIMES. 7 – FOCUS ON THE CROWN CHAKRA (CROWN OF THE HEAD) AND CHANT THE SOUND, AUM (OM), SIX TIMES. Chant these as resonantly and mellifluously as you can, taking full breaths of air between each sounding and allow yourself to enjoy the sound fully. When you’ve finished take a moment or two to rest in the ensuing inner silence and appreciate the simple yet profound and unfathomable miracle of being alive with consciousness to know about it, as well as appreciate the same miracle happening for everyone else here on the planet with you. Give this experiment with reality, for that’s what it essentially constitutes, a minimum of 90 days daily practice before judging the results, which I wager will be an increase of personal frequency and hence, a greater resonance with the underlying sound wave, leading to greater congruence with the world around (and within) you. I also suggest supplementing this with regular listening of Hofer66 feat. Barefoot Doctor IDIOCATION EP, specifically psychosonically produced to raise your internal frequency: www.itunes. apple.com/us/album/psychoactive/id413376294

And to take part in a truly splendid group meditation to bolster your personal efforts, come along to my weekly online satsang (Sanskrit for sitting together in truth), which happens every Sunday at 17.00 BST (16.00 GMT, 18.00 CET) – book a place and get free daily wisdom drops from me.

temente sigue aumentando exponencialmente.

40

MUSIC IS THE KEY Derrick May said in his interview in our last issue that there is no musical revolution in sight and i totally agree - this happens maybe every decade or less. The last element being added successfully to music was something that was not new at any time, in fact it is one of the oldest ones ever in music history - the groove. It returned with heavy bass lines, pumping kicks, emulating the drums that were used as instruments to communicate in early human history. This thing was called house in its early days, with all its varieties up to today, be it techno, trance, drum n’ bass (name is program) or one of the hundreds of sub-genres that appeared over the last years. All speak the same language, Fingers Inc were one of the first to describe it in their track ‘My House’ - ‘and Jack had a groove, and from this groove came the groove of all grooves’. Well, history says that the origi52

nal was from Rhythm Control featuring Chuck Roberts, released in 1987 on Catch a Beat Records from Chicago... However, house music was born and with it began an era of division into electronically produced music and music played by ‘real’ bands with ‘real’ instruments. Both parties were absolutely sure that their music is the only one that counts, no rocker ever put one foot into a discotheque and no real clubber went to any ‘boring’ live concerts. Thank god those days are over, today the mutual respect is omnipresent and the fusion of whatever music with electronic devices has done very well - enriching both sides to create the ultimate high. Music is the key to so many things, it is nothing more or less than frequencies floating your

body in a very wide range, from a few hz up to several thousand hz, influencing your state of mind constantly. Whatever music you hear, be it classics, jazz, blues, rock, pop, house or whatever has a direct impact on your consciousness and subconsciousness, want it or not. It does not matter at all how music is produced, the only important factor is the combination of frequencies and the harmonies in between them, the space they have to fully expand and, if you add vocals to it, the message you submit with it. It is the quality of the production that really marks the difference, like we say ‘quality never prostitutes’ and whatever is done well will succeed sooner or later. Essential in listening to music is the quality of the reproduction, you can not listen to Mozart on a ghetto blaster or an average car stereo as you simply will not hear the full range of frequencies it contains. One more factor is very important as well - the volume. It should not be too loud but never ever too low, the impact is exponential to the volume. An ipod is not enough to generate the pressure to really enjoy a great rock tune or any electronic track. What all neighbours hate about the discotheque next door is dancefloor heaven to the clubbers. And a soundproof that limits all noise is very difficult as the bass is a heavy bastard to capture, it will find its way through almost every insulation available. But coming back to what is cooking right now, what is the most sexy dancemusic on the planet? Seth Troxler calls it ‘Underground Pop’ and i totally agree, it is newcomers like Art Department, Tale of Us, Maya Jane Coles, Maceo Plex and Inxec, to name just a few, and it is underground labels like Crosstown Rebels, Visionquest, Leftroom and Melisma, not to forget all the great labels and producers that do a fantastic job for many years. All those are at the forefront of this not-so-new-but-finallygroovy-as-hell fusion of Rock, Pop, Indie and New Wave with our beloved Housemusic that set the mark to the new Dancefloor-Revolution. That will incorporate even more music lovers and convert them into floor addicts, finally understanding that it is all about shaking that booty, having a good time together and enjoying a peaceful gathering to celebrate life at a great party, no matter how many people attend as long as it is true. Music IS the drug, music IS the essence, music IS the key.

TELL US ABOUT NIGHTMARES ON WAX Wow! what a question to start an interview:-))) N.O.W started back in 1985 as just a bedroom dj mix duo from Leeds UK with me and a guy called John Halnon. Later John stopped Djing and i brought Kevin Harper(Boywonder) in to join as my Dj partner. We then went from doing after hour parties to promoting club nights, where we would try out our musical demos at our weekly night Downbeat in ‘88.This is where N.O.W as a group was formed, a year later in July ‘89 we were pressing our first release “Dextrous” which had a massive response in the warehouse parties and rave scene. Then we were signed by Warp records on a one single deal in November 1989 that deal went from a one album deal to a five album then onto a seven album one, which brings us up to now, as I am in the process of writing my seventh album. WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE WAX DA - PROJECT? The Wax Da concept was born out of the Wax da Jam events i arranged around Europe to showcase artists from our Wax On record label. That has now moved onto Wax Da Beach which was born at Kuhmaras in 2007 and is showcased this year at Sands Beach Bar in Playa Den Bossa. Wax da Jam had become our weekly residency at Aura In San Juan, both events showcase Negghead, Shovell, Wolfgang Haffner, Paul Powell,The Disco Legends, The Planty Herbs, Daddy G, Ashley Beedle and Bonobo this year. WHY THE NAME EASE? It was created by a musician i was very close to, Tozz 180 who sadly passed away earlier this year, he co-wrote a few N.O.W. classics with me. My name means Experience,A,Sample,Expert quite a title i know! always working to live up to it:-) HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN IBIZA? WHY IBIZA? It’s been 5 glorious years so far & boy has it gone fast! Ibiza is home to me and my family, we have come home on a deeper level. The first time i left England for my first ever holiday in 1988, was to Ibiza. And it has always drawn me here, now I know why:-) YOU PLAY SERATO ON VINYL - NO BEATMATCH - GREAT JOB! WHAT U THINK ABOUT ALL THE BEATMATCHING? I love the feel of it, i want to use the tools and tricks, but I want to play records! Feel the groove and be challenging on a mix. For me this is the journey that you go and people can feel the art form. I know about the push button Dj’s, there is always an easier option. Originality is what really survives. YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT ON THE ISLAND? First HOME! it’s where my heart is:-) on the island I have a few, but the one I reveal is Cala D’hort for the Es Vedra buzz at the beginning of the season or at the end. 60

HOW DOES YOUR PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE? Manifesting greatness, be it laughing, smiling, making music, talking music, eating great food, getting good stuff done, family vibes and remembering to appreciating the moment:-) 5 THINGS YOU COULD CHANGE ON THE ISLAND? No Greed! there should be enough for everyone Free drinking water in clubs Good healthy 24h food spots Massive support of local produce A new up to date water park GEORGE EVELYN IN 20 YEARS? Happier, still shining & making people feel good in the present or through music :-) HÁBLANOS DE NIGHTMARES ON WAX ¡Vaya! En ambos eventos este año presentaremos a Negghead, Shovell, Wolfgang Haffner, Paul Powell, The Disco Legends, The Planty Herbs, Daddy G, Ashley Beedle y Bonobo.

ON OFF INTERVIEW WITH ANDRÉ CROM TEXT:HOFER66 // PHOTO: PHRANK

66

IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO FIND LABELS AND PRODUCERS/DJS THAT ARE JUST AT THE POINT TO REALLY KICK OFF. IN CASE OF ANDRÉ CROM, LABELHEAD OF OFF-RECORDS AND DJ OF PASSION, LOVE AND RESPECT FOR OUR PROFESSION THIS IS MORE THAN TRUE. HE IS NO NEWCOMER, HE AND THE WHOLE OFF FAMILY ARE ON THE EDGE OF SOMETHING GREAT. ANDRÉ, WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET IN TOUCH WITH ELECTRONIC MUSIC, STARTED DJING AND PRODUCING? My first contact was at 14 but my real addiction began when i listened to Daft Punk’s album Homeworks. My first contact with a DJ booth was at 19, as i lived in the countryside in Germany it was not so easy to go to a club, a car was needed and to get in you had to be 18. At 21 i got my first bookings and at 25 my work in the studio began. Since 5 years i work fulltime as DJ, producer and labelmanager. TALKING ABOUT LABELMANAGER, YOU ARE HEAD OF OFF RECORDS, TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS PLATFORM. OFF records was created about 2 1/2 years ago. After a while producing more minimal style I decided to go back to my roots that are soulful house music and the idea of doing my own label was born. This formed into a concept coming out of my experience with other labels who always made me dependent on what they would like me to do, postponing things and making promises that did not happen. I wanted to have full control over the music and the way of releasing and promoting it. Luckily i got promos sent by the likes of Chris Carrier and DJ Wild and it all took OFF, no we already have 25 releases on our back and it still feels like we just started. The breakthrough was definitely the ‘New Orleans E.P.’ by M.IN & Ynk & Bastian Schuster, last year followed ‘Gonna be alright’ and ‘In the City’ by Martin Dawson and myself and ‘The Voice’ by Thyladomid that went top three on Beatport, becoming the bestselling deep house record on Beatport in 2010. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE OFF FAMILY. Definitely the two core guys behind the label are Martin Dawson and myself, another very important one is Chris Carrier who produced as well parts of the latest OFF 25 release mixing one of the two CDs. We are very happy to have signed another E.P with DJ Wild, to be released in October. Latest member is Huxley, he is getting more and more involved in our label what makes me very happy as well. Besides of us few the aim is to give newcomers a chance to show their talent. OFF RECORDS AS A QUITE YOUNG LABEL IS BORN INTO A VERY TOUGH MARKET WHEN IT COMES TO MAKE A LIVING OUT OF MUSIC, HOW DO YOU SEE THE EVOLUTION OF IT ALL ON THE MUSIC AND BUSINESS SIDE? Musicwise it is a constant circle, to name it with Seth Troxlers words what is right now really kicking off is ‘Underground Pop’ which is very similar to the sound that was produced seven, eight 5.2

67

years ago by the likes of Metro Area being one of my favourite acts before i went into the more minimal stuff. Now this sound comes back so it is a kind of circle which is quite interesting as it keeps our music interesting and does not bore. The sound of Off records is influenced by this circle without ever losing the basis that is house music. Businesswise things have changed a lot, a few years ago it was enough to release a decent record and sell 2000 copies, nowadays you can be very happy if you sell 300 records - if you still do vinyl... Digitally the biggest challenge is to make your music heard, never ever so many music has been released so the most important factor is to make the people listen to your sound.

THE DOSIS MAKES THE POISON. THANX A LOT FOR HAVING YOU, KEEP GROOVING AND - ONE LAST QUESTION - WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT DUB MAGAZINE? What i really love about it is the fact that it does not feel like a hype machine as other magazines do, for me it has a lot more soul and i am very proud to be a part of it.

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO MAKE YOUR MUSIC HEARD? Social networks are very important, the blogs are another important part of the game, Resident Advisor is a very good way to promote your music, their top 50 are a very good indicator of what is cooking right now. A banner on Beatport is another powerful tool to promote your sound. MOST IMPORTANT IS TO PRODUCE QUALITY MUSIC AND THEN USE THE DIFFERENT PLATFORMS TO PROMOTE IT... Definitely, if you make boring music you will need a lot of ‘friends’ to sell your stuff... WHAT IS THE NEXT OFF RELEASE? The next release will come from Martin Dawson and myself, one is a more club-orientated oldschool 90’s track and the other is a bright sunny shining daytime beach track perfect for Ibiza. Those tracks will be released in september and contain as well remixes by Jeff K and Homework.

68

TALKING ABOUT IBIZA, YOU ALREADY PLAYED HERE THIS SEASON? Three weeks ago i played for SNP in Privilege, playing in Sankeys was big fun as well but my favourite gig was at the BHS in Salinas, playing on a daytime event you can deliver a more deeper sound. The clubs still require a more banging set, they need a bit more time to get into the deeper side of house music even if the evolution goes that way. So for the rest of the season i plan to come back just for holidays and maybe do some co-productions. And some personal networking going out meeting people. Definitely Ibiza is a good spot to meet people and start some business relations, as is Berlin as well :-) ANDRÉ CROM IN 20 YEARS? I KNOW YOU ARE QUITE YOUNG BUT AT ANY AGE 20 YEARS FROM NOW ON IS A LONG TIME. WE HAD ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT ANSWERS ON THAT ONE, FROM A WHOLE RETIRING PLAN TO ‘WHAT A FUCKING STUPID QUESTION’... I will definitely still play music, maybe only at very selected events, besides of that i do have a plan but it is more a gastronomical concept. I am going to start that besides my DJ career, i want to do something that makes a lot of sense for me and other people, have a family and be a happy man.

SIEMPRE ES UN PLACER DAR CON SELLOS Y PRODUCTORES/DJ QUE ESTÁN JUSTO A PUNTO DE DESPEGAR. EN EL CASO DE ANDRÉ CROM, LABELHEAD DE OFFRECORDS Y DJ CON PASIÓN, AMOR Y RESPETO POR NUESTRA PROFESIÓN, ESTO ES MÁS QUE VERDAD. NO ES NINGÚN RECIÉN LLEGADO, ÉL Y TODA LA FAMILIA OFF ESTÁN A PUNTO DE CREAR ALGO GENIAL.

SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR PLAN TO ME. DO YOU THINK THERE IS A PHYSICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL LIMIT FOR A DJ TO STOP PLAYING MUSIC? I don’t think there is such limit, you shouldn’t go out and party as hard as when you just started, but when i look at people like Carl Cox or Sven Väth being in their late 40’s and on the peak of their career doing very very well it really depends on what you focus on, as long as you have fun and can move people there is no such limit.

LONG PLAYERS A VERY PERSONAL SELECTION BY HOFER66

AUDIOFLY / FOLLOW MY LIEBE

LEE CURTISS / WATERGATE 08

V.A. / SOUND OF THE CITY

no i did not forget to review the cd in the last edition, i just wanted to give it maximum audience as it deserves this and a lot more. best about this longplayer is that they are not fishing for compliments, they just did a fantastic concept album. sit back and enjoy - i promise you will get up and shake that booty.

lee curtiss is a synonym for extra groovy, and this new edition of one of the best clubs worldwide in berlin, release number 08 from watergate, strips it down to the core. trax from maceo plex, doP, guy gerber and more make this one a collectors item that is hard to top.

it is dan ghenacia’s sound of paris, not the sound of paris. a very personal selection of trax showcasing dan’s personal interpretation of this series of cds recently started by ministry of sound. no fishing for compliments, just a fine selection. well done.

OLIVER KLEIN / GALLERY

V.A. / FORWARD TO THE PAST

PHREEK PLUS ONE / PHREEK PARTY

releasing his firtst album after almost 30 years of presence in the dancefloor community stands for quality á la oliver klein. with the help of some friends he created an album straight for the floors, very few compromises and an excellent production make this one a must for all fans of german tech house.

not brandnew on pokerflat but very worth a review is this compilation. title is program, forward-thinking dancemusic for the brave, not surprising but very solid and well produced. trax come from clé, deetron, m. landsky and labelhead steve bug himself. if you collect pokerflat than go get this one definitely.

compost is another synonym for quality, after lps like the killer from tj kong + nuno dos santos the label delivers another highlight, trax that combine futuristic disco, low beat house and straight floortools in a context that is so selfevident that one can see the great effort puring out of its cover. great job.

besides the strange name this lp is really full of surprises, whenever you think - oh this is nothing new - some of the great artists surprise you with their tracks, smash tv, djuma sound system or adultnapper, amongst others, sign responsible for this great selection.

perlon is one of the most reknown labels of our electronic music age, and margaret dygas is the laterst lp entry. 6 trax showcasing her ability to deliver high quality sounds rich in grooves, percussions and major chords. you will definitely find your fave on this lp.

from wide and far reaching soundscapes, the hypnosis subtly builds up with washes of ethereal melodies while floating pads are brushed by reverberated organic and electric data or the distant echoes of life on a planet. authentic and vibrant tracks, deeply emotive, the story unfolds...

V.A. / COCOON COMP K

ART DEPARTMENT / THE DRAWING BOARD

V.A. / CRAIG RICHARDS PRES. NOTHING SPECIAL

our heroes from cocoon deliver the compilation number eleven, as much years as they are in ibiza. trax from david august, nina kraviz, maetrik, sascha dive or minilogue, amongst others, showcase perfectly the sophisticated sound of cocoon, getting softer and sweeter and better every year.

not new but maybe THE reference of the new underground pop movement - as groovy as it can be, goosepimples and the urge to move are guaranteed. probably the best album released this year, there is so much in it you need to repeat it about 100 times to fully get their incredible talent. more please!

name is program, carl is not fishing for any compliments and there is absolutely no need for it. great selection, artists like Two Lone Swordsmen, Gemini, Conforce, Convextion, Maurice Fulton, G-Man and Stinkworks are melted into a great compilation that is something very special...

GOLDIE / FABRICLIVE.58

V.A. / MASTERPIECE BY GILLES PETERSON

FINE EQUIPE & FRENDS / LA BOULANGERIE 2

drum n’ bass pioneer goldie is set to deliver the entry number 58 on fabric, and he does it very succesfully, melting the whole d n’ b - spectrum to a tasty melange, dropping in pop songs and creating a vibe that is hard to resist. if you were no goldie fan or did not know him you will definitely know better now.

masterpiece brings you legends from the world of music that have one unique story to tell through their own influences and inspirations. a very fine collection of trax á la gilles peterson - unique and most rich. his passion and enthusiasm for electeronic music is unfailing and deeply infectious.

best described as eletro hip hop, the fine team is back from planet fantastic, having artists like saney, mister modo, dal-gren, guts or buddy sativa in their luggage. why we have a hip hop album in our music section? why not! besides, it is really a great piece of sound.

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE / DJ KICKS

SOLAR SIDES / IBIZA DEEP CONNECTION

CAVALIER / A MILLION HORSES

another great dj kicks, this time from the mcde - playing from soul and jazz classics up to house á la mr. fingers, fred p or creative swing alliance. even techno á la robert hood fits into this great release, leaving no wishes open, great work from the young german producer dfanilo plessow.

tomi del castillo + esteban lucci aka solar sides release their new lp on immaculate ibiza - a trip into deepest house with beautiful melodies to make you dream of a better world based on a gigantic dancefloor under the stars - somewhere on our beloved island.

cavalier, better known as agnés, is an artist from switzerland presenting his new lp on drumpoet community. a collection of sensual harmonies inspired by jazz, rich in melodies and deep percussions, perfect for homelistening or on any party on the beach, enjoying a day under the blue sky with good friends.

T.E.E. / S/N

V.A. / MACAO CAFE EPISODE 2

WASIS DIOP / FROM SENEGAL TO IBIZA

turzi understands that 80s digital tangerine dream is far more charming than their 70s analog output, that jean-michel jarre’s zoolook and revolution are more rewarding than the worn-out oxygène and equinoxe, that gainsbarre knows better than gainsbourg. just discovered this artist but will for sure follow him very close.

episode two is the follow up to a succcesful entry on macao cafe music from 2010, this time with artists of the likes of klangstein, trillian miles, sine and setshuna. a quite open range collection of trax inspired by our white isle, from down- over upbeat to 4x4, you definitely find your fave on it.

ingmarlo, labelhead of movinsounds, remixes wasis diop - out come trax that are very rich in sounds, creating a melange of senegalese sounds melted with ibizencan lounge style. rafa peletey as well cooperates in one of the trax. a perfect gift for those ibiza reviews at home close your eyes and u r back.

JENS BUCHERT / INTO THE SILENCE

GANGA / FORGET GRAVITY

MACHINEDRUM / ROOM(S)

jens buchert delivers an album best described as downbeat lounge - beautiful spheres meet intelligent rhythms, deep melodies tingled by omnipresent strings. an album to dream of your last holiday or the one you are having right now - or going to have? hopefully it is in fron tof you :-)

ganga delivers an album that takes you through all the shades of chill lounge - leaving you behind with a sweet taste and the urge to press repeat to not fall out of lounge heaven. a superb collection of dubby, progressive and tripped out electronica.

travis stewart is machine drum as well as sepalcure, his preferred style is idm and d n’ b, but this labum is something more. it will serve a lot of djs as sound source, intense listening brings you deeprer and deeper into his world. try it out, you will be more than satisfied.

SHORT PLAYERS A VERY PERSONAL SELECTION BY HOFER66

GUILLAUME + THE COUTU DUMONTS / UBIQUITUOUS GAZE

MATTHEW BURTON + NICK LAWSON / PLAYDO

a very strange shortplayer, really cool is only the stringapella from the title track - one of those intros that will stay forever in my set. a strange male vocal talking about his passion for our music - ideal for starting a sophisticated set whenever you have a professional crowd in front of you.

leftroom records deliver one big player after the other, all have this irresistible groove in common, melting pop, indie, rock and house essentials to a dish you will not be able to refuse. my fave is inxec’s remould, stripping it down to its core and adding sweetest elements to it to redefine what is already great.

INXEC VS. DROOG / WESTBOUND E.P.

crosstownrebels and no end......... the knights around damian lazarus are on their way to electronic eternity. one of them, inxec, teams up with l.a.’s droog to create four monster trax as groovy as they can be. when you mix them all four you got the audience by the balls.

WHO MADE WHO / EVERY MINUTE ALONE RMX

who made who from denmark are considered the danciest rockband on earth, so imagine what comes out when tale of us puts hand on their original - highly addictive with no guarantee of a return from planet e. whenever you play it you will have them all stick to ‘the needle’ - only problem is what to play after??

ENERGY 52 / CAFÉ DEL MAR RMXS

from the whole bunch of remixes of this eternal trance classic my absolute fave comes from grooveguru roberto rodriguez. he respects the original melody while keeping the bpms really low - out comes dancefloor heaven. roberto is somebody to watch as he has only just begun to rise.s.

DOP / YOUR SEX RMXS

the original is a strange piece of electronic music, paul ritch puts hands on it and it gets even stranger, but when the duo from art department take over the knobs it converts into a beautiful balearic groover par excellence. very rich in sounds, never boring and always building up to dancefloor heaven.

PHREEK PLUS ONE / PASSION RMXS toby tobias, sportloto, scottocosto and dj t put hands on the original released on compost black label, out comes another underground pop groover. thomas koch aka dj t is by far my favourite rework, converting the original in a tool to first make the girls groove so the boyz will follow.

DENIZ CURTEL, GUTI + GADI MIZRAHI / THE WAY I FEEL

each of the artists is one big shot in contemporary dancefloorbusiness, their cooperation brings out two tracks that are more an experiment than anything else, sophisticated electronic beats meet strange voices and melodies. nothing for the faint hearted or obvious...

78

5.2

MAKOSSA + MEGABLAST / SOY COMO SOY RMXS the lyrics are so simple it almost hurts - but it speaks from the heart of all of us. and the groove is irresistible. the remixes come from the likes of luciano, koze, d-nox + beckers, defex + radial m or skwerl, interpreting it all their very own way. my fave is the luciano one, an essential track that will never fail.

JAMES KAMERAN / KISS THE GROUND we love to support quality local productions, and this new ep from james kameran is no exception. the title track is as deep as it can be, grooving in from the backdoor, a schizo vocal rides in and some chainsawish synth splits your brain. flash is a glimpse lighter and friendlier, but just a glimpse. loving it.

DJ T FEAT. CARI GOLDEN / CITY LIFE RMXS maya jane coles and maceo plex put hands on the original, as did thomas himself - out comes a not-too-much-disco-track straight to your heart. my fave is his own remix, a lovely deep house track cutting the original melody in pieces, adding some extra flavour to give you the key to the wiggly worm.

THYLADOMID + ADRIATIQUE / DEEP IN THE TREE 2diy4 releases another ep with 4 trax, one of them is a beautiful deep house flyer perfect to put a smile on any dancers face and a move to hers/his hips. beautiful voice meets repetitive melody, a most deep bassline spins around a healthy kick - out comes another great release á la thyladomid.

LAYO AND BUSHWACKA / SUMMER GONE the only thing i do not get on this track is the title - this is the beginning of all summer and its positive vibes! building up slowly, followed by one of the most genious breaks ever programmed to finally peak in a high voltage house track that is meant to conquer all clubs on this planet.

BURNSKI / THERE IS A CULPRIT james burnham aka burnski delivers a track looking for the guilty one - the culprit. i guess he does not need to find it - the track is a bomb anyway - bulding up slowly and hypnotic, taking you on a looped trip to housebeats flavoured by lethal bass drums and this melody that loops in your head on and on.

PETER KRUDER / YOUNG GIRL

ANDRE CROM + MARTIN DAWSON / WHAT WE DO TODAY

one of the other trax on the 2diy4 release is this one - peter is taking it from the very deep side as well. a strange vocal talking about a young girl is wrapped in a deep groove and trippy elements taking you on a trip to your inner core. perfect played on any afterhour or at warm up time.

offspin is one of my favourite labels, they developed into a full monster over the past months. labelhead andre crom joins master dawson to create a housetrack out of the almanac. most cool male vocal meets heavy bassline meets addictive melody and hats and strings fit perfectly into each other.

ANNE RANI / THIRD EAR RMXS

STEFANO TESTA / ROOM ONE

the remixes cover all kinds of musical tastes, from disco inferno to house mixes and fast forward ones - the one i like is the third ear rmx - a twisted crossover track enriched with her intense voice, creating a tool for all djs that melt different styles, making it a perfect one to switch styles.

melisma is as i said in dub 5.1 a relatively young label with highest ambitions on the way to stardom. labelowner dani casarano gives the original an extraboost on groove, cleaning it where it is too full and converts it into a jewel. mirco violi and felipe venegas did a proper job on their rework too.

T.E.E. / CONNAISSEUR RMXS

NOIR + HAZE / AROUND RMX

turzi aka t.e.e. is an explorer of sound, in the lp section we describe his philosophy to give you an idea of what he is about. black strobe convert the original into a floorkiller par excellence, 80s synths meet schizo vocal meet heavy bassline. only for the brave.

diynamic labelhead solomun softens the original, injecting his charme and ability to groove it to the max. the vocals are as cool as they can be and the bpms are at somehow 120 on 0 pitch. this is some heavy toool to drop the girls and glibber the boys.

CESAR MERVEILLE + GUTI / MAAYANCHOLY

PATRICK CHARDRONNET / PLEASANT DAY

cadenza forever... the original is 100% true to the labels spirit, beatuy meets groove meets innovation - out comes pure groovy love. luciano puts hand on the track and converts it into a 18 minutes trip to toast your neurones and reboot them randomly, focused only on his irresistible bits and beats.

audiomatique is back and so is patrick, 3 tracks with slightly dark melodies embedded in solid grooves, perfect for the big floors on planet e. rich in sounds and grooves, using the whole spectrum of frequencies to wrap your brain to your booty in order to dance the night away.

DJ PIERRE + GREEN VELVET VS. PHUTURE / ACID TRAX 2011

PEZZNER / ONE MORE

no this is no joke or hoax, they did it again... including the original you get the full package. the rmx by green velvet and dj pierre is a perfectly mastered retrip of the original, and chris menace and angel alanis take it to a different level. for all you new djs out there - go get this package

rebellion or rebel lion present pezzner, a most creative artist in many fields. producing dancemusic is definitely one of his strong parts, my fave is ‘try it again’ feat. nneka gryffyn, a sweet but tricky housetrack with a groove that gotcha before you even realize you are into it. most intelligent house music.

LAYO + BUSHWACKA /STORM AND STRESS

RICKZOR + RUMME / FEELIN ALRIGHT

name is program, this release on plus 8 proofs their aim to go straight to the floor with no prisoners to be made. ‘for every guetta there is a hawtin’ is their answer to the pop invasion in danceculture, and it works perfectly for them - and us. especially ‘gunpowder’ is a real killer, dirty deep grooves to melt your brain.

once more rogue recs presents a local release taking us deep into classic house without too much noise, coming straight to the point that this is about dancing, nothing more - or less. phat kick meets driving bassline, lots of hi hats looking for who comes in stronger. great tool for a groovy crowd.

JONA / THIS TIME sophisticated deep melodic house is maybe the shortest description of this new release on leena. jona is known for his urge to harmonize the floors on this planet, and this ep is another living proof of this urge. perfect to build up, come down or cool out any set in a beautiful surrounding.

italian cosmic disco house is their very own description of what they produce and i gotta say they are damn right. both are parttime ibiza inhabitants and deliver a series of variations to their original, enriching it with more groove and less bullshit around it. solid work to be used at early times or to make the crowd addicted.

GREG PAULUS / NIGHTTIME CRAZY P RMX

STEVE BUG + CLÉ / SEVEN HILLS

now this is a hell of a remix. chris todd and tom baron aka crazy p did it again, sometimes a galactic spark must hit their neurones and give them superpowers... you got a bit of everything, mystic, groove, sex, love. eternal track.

already out since june, this ep and its great mentors take you on a trip to dreamworld. trippy melodies meet tough basslines, stomp over a deep kick and got a lot of strings and hihats in their luggage. my fave is the title track, the piano is almost feelable, breeaking throufgh whenever it wants to.

MARTIN BUTTRICH / ROCKET

ANDRE BUTANO + MIGUEL LOBO / HABLANDO

always when i ask myself what martin is doing he surprises me with another fantastic release... rocket hypnotizes with its shuffled melody, irresistible beat coming through the backdoor and a most intelligent trackstructure. the b-side magic market is almost too intelligent, very trippy and cool.

the mexicanish vocal tells a fucked up story about life, movies and rhythm, beats are on both trax absolutely great and perfectly balanced, and the build up is because of its linear character the driving element in both sides. reliable tool to build up a fiesta (not mexicana) wherever you play.

MARTIN LANDSKY / MORNING CAFFEINE

like the name says, we all need a good dose of that to have a good start. the organ dub version is sweet and whitened, the original is straight black and the b-side ‘aint nobodys’ is the café solo version. all three are great tools to conquer a floor, my fave is the organ dub - veeeeery nice. 80

LUCA C + BRIGANTE / DIFFERENT MORALS

ZAKES BANTWINI / WASTING MY TIME REMIXES rocco, franck roger and dan ghenacia put hands on the original, out comes a different interpretation of a soulful african driven deep house track. the vocal is almost cheesy, on the edge but very sincere. All mixes are very well done - my fave is the rocco mix or the ghenacia dub - hard to decide...
