VERY IMPORTANT PREDICTION It is as simple as logical, all in life is based on Mathematics and so is the phenomenon of the ever growing number of tourists that attend our nightlife in relation to the music that gets played and the vibe that comes out of it.

Es tan simple como lógico, todo en la vida está basado en las matemáticas y también lo está el fenómeno del siempre creciente número de turistas que disfrutan de nuestra vida nocturna en relación a la música que se toca y al ambiente resultante de todo esto.

On top they content themselves with a certain music style that is played by a growing number of ‘DJs’, I call it the ‘break disease’, doing nothing else than playing soulless music that sounds all the same, turning down bass and mids for sometimes half a minute to then kick them back in, expecting the hordes to throw their hands in the air and celebrate this ‘unique’ moment that repeats every two minutes – and the horde does exactly what is expected. Great tracks that tell a story are ‘synced’ to death in a meaningless and disrespectful manner by selecting only their peak moment and squeeze it through the same setup over and over and over (and over) again. Hello? If you add to this the sheer volume of some sound systems that force you to wear earplugs in order to not seriously damage your eardrums I have to say this is not what I call a good party, this is simply idiotic. If the whole club wears plugs then why not turning down the volume to get the right sound? Fortunately there is a whole bunch of great ‘real’ clubs and club nights that respect music and attract the right crowd, but to find them is becoming more and more difficult, they almost have to be kept secret to not overcrowd them, as Mike Manumission said, a good party is not defined by the number of people that attend but the quality of them.

Cada año más gente visita la isla, constantemente se abren nuevos espacios, al mismo tiempo que otros se cierran y también hay otros que continuamente intentan ampliar su capacidad. Pero, ¿qué significa todo esto para el cluber normal y corriente? No me entiendas mal, todo el mundo tiene derecho a salir de marcha y pasarlo bien; nosotros luchamos por eso durante muchos años, pero simplemente no hay suficientes ‘auténticas’ fiestas para mantener el alto estándar por el que se conoce a Ibiza. Saliendo últimamente me encontré a mí mismo entre hordas de usuarios de smartphones (Mr. Simon ya habló en profundidad acerca de esto en la primera edición), no haciendo nada que no sea sacar fotos y hacer vídeos de un evento para entonces ‘compartirlo’ en cualquiera de las redes sociales, sin disfrutar del momento y, desde luego, sin disfrutar de la noche con aquellos que tienen a su alrededor. Por encima, se contentan con un cierto estilo de música; ese que pincha un creciente número de ‘DJs’ –yo lo llamo ‘break disease’- y lo único que hacen es pinchar música sin alma que suena siempre igual, quitando los bajos y los medios durante casi un minuto para después volver a lanzarlos, esperando que las multitudes levanten sus brazos en el aire para celebrar este momento ‘único’ que se repite cada dos minutos –y las multitudes hacen exactamente lo que se espera de ellas. Incluso las canciones que tienen una historia se ‘sincronizan’ hasta la muerte de manera desrespetuosa y sin sentido, sólo para seleccionar su momento cumbre y meterlo a la fuerza en el mismo set una y otra y otra (y otra) vez. ¡Venga ya! Si a esto le añades la cantidad de volumen de algunos sistemas de sonido, que te obligan a usar tapones para los oídos para no dañarte seriamente los tímpanos, tengo que decir que eso no es lo que yo llamo una buena fiesta, es simplemente una idiotez. Si todo el club usa tapones, entonces ¿por qué no bajar el volumen para conseguir el sonido adecuado? Por suerte, hay un montón de excelentes ‘auténticos’ clubs y noches que respetan la música y que atraen al tipo correcto de público, pero encontrarlos es cada vez más y más difícil. Casi que tienen que mantenerse en secreto para no acabar abarrotados. Como dijo Mike Manumission, una buena fiesta no está definida por el número de gente que acude a ella, sino por la calidad de esta gente.

Every year more people visit the island, there are new venues opening constantly as others close down, and the existing ones try to amplify their capacity continuously. But what does that mean for the average clubber? Don’t get me wrong, everybody has the right to party, we do fight for that for so many years, but there are simply not enough ‘real’ party people to maintain the high standard that Ibiza is known for. Going out lately I find myself between hordes of smartphone users (already wrote about that extensively in the first edition this year) doing nothing else than taking pictures and videos of an event to then ‘share’ it on any social network, not enjoying the moment and certainly not enjoying the night with the others around them.

It is with greatest pleasure that we can say we made it through another season, still independent, we made new friends and left some others behind, and more than ever we are sure to be on the right way. Thanx to an overwhelming feedback we know that our way is the right one, we seem to find the right words and pictures to reach you. Within this edition we got some very interesting things to tell you, Lenny Ibizarre wrote a masterpiece on Dinosaurs, you will find out the story behind ‘Murphy’s Law’, we defend the freedom of press more than ever, our Formentera Guide is back and we invited the relevant local radiostations to present themselves. Delmar and Alvaro aka Los Suruba made it finally into dub and we had a chat with Adam Dyment aka Duke Dumont. And last but NOT least we give you some good advice on how to make it in our little paradise. THE IBIZA DINOSAUR TEXT: LENNY IBIZARRE // PHOTO: PHRANK

There are but a few people out there who come to visit our island who come to be aware of the infamous Ibiza dinosaur. Lurking in the darkness of VIP parties, one may stumble onto one of these rare specimens. The dinosaur is recognised by its grey tones, fading colours and hopeless expression of nonchalant disappointment and rolling eyes. I recommend that you only approach this creature if you are prepared to put a serious damper on your evening! So let me explain exactly what I mean, by recalling, from my own experience, the very first time I made contact with this miserable distributor of depression: it was 1991, and I was swinging on a dance floor, in the throes of all engulfing love and music when I headed for the bar to drowse myself in the refreshments. In my all-consuming elation I turned to the next individual and stated: “this island is amazing! I absolutely love it!”. To my shock the dinosaur turned to me and said: “well, it used to be… but now it is all over”. Huh?! I proceeded to ask the ancient relic, if they were joking? Apparently not! And so I witnessed for the first time the ridiculous mantra these creatures recite: “A few years ago, it was amazing, the clubs had no roof, but now, it is all over…” Now this was 1991, and this pessimist was referring to 1989. In just two years, a combined 100 square meter roof construction, evenly distributed over all the clubs, had destroyed everything that this poor soul could possibly enjoy on the island. I was completely perplexed, having the time of my life, underneath the roof. At the time I believe this to be an individual case. But it was not to be so. I soon ran into hordes of lamenting cry-babies, who’s only occupation seem to be informing others that they: 80’s Hair-disasterious: “were not having fun”, “didn’t understand”, “arrived too late”, “missed the boat” and “doomed to a life of misery”, and the insulting “You were born too late.” Me: “Huh?!” As I moved on, slowly penetrating many of the inner circles of fancy socialites, I experienced even older specimens: First the disco queens, who informed me that: Disco Dinosaur: “You see, young ignorant tourist, it was already over in the 80s! The 70s was when it really took off. Franco stepped down, and the discotheques were built, and soon cocaine and disco music arrived. This was the time! It has been downhill since then…” Me: “WTF?!” Escaping into nature I eventually found myself on beaches riddled with hippies of yesteryear. Apparently, this much older specie, denies the fact that anybody really had any fun in the 70s. The argument goes something like this: Unwashed flee-colony: “the clubs ruined everything. We were free and naked and live bands played acid rock. But this was all commercialized by those money grabbing love haters!!!” Me: “I am so sorry for you… NOT!!!” At this point I concluded that that would probably be the last remaining, and oldest specimen, of these dinosaurs. Wrong again! I had the interesting encounter with the person who were old 8.2

enough to experience the beat generation, also called the beatniks. For those who do not know what a beatnik is let me explain in brief: the beatniks were the intellectual movement in universities across America who refused to restrict their education to that of the Western world. Looking to eastern philosophy, they opened up for existential debates and questioned the very fabric of the modern mindset. In other words: they were the great minds who’s writing and poetry inspired the rise of the (somewhat less intellectual) hippies and the nonviolent revolution of love. Among these people you will find Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs. I had the great honour of sound tracking the last European reading of Mr. Ginsberg in Italy. He, like many others of his kind, traveled to Tangier in Morocco, in search of cheap boys and smack for inspiration. It was on these travels, that many of them stopped off on a phantasmagorical Balearic Islands called Eivissa. To my surprise there was no negativity in the recollection: Beatnik: “we were hanging out around the campfire on the beaches as we wrote, read and burned, one poem after another. Then we would ride horses bareback in the nude (no pun) up and down the beach in the full moon light. Those were great times” Me: “Wow!” At this point I was convinced that I had finally found the primordial prime mover; that minuscule snowball that set off the avalanche that eventually resulted in the conditions that you and me enjoy here today. Wrong again!!! In 2004, I moved to Hollywood for six months during the winter, to engage one of the greatest challenges I have faced: Recording and remixing the Henry Mancini catalog together with his son, Chris Mancini (fastest ears in the west), together with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. It was during my time there, that I found myself in one of the many West Hollywood private parties. I was, as always, hanging out in the back room reserved for producers, technicians and stuntmen. Let me tell you: there is nothing like partying with Hollywood stuntmen! And the technicians are the finest in the world: they know the exact combination of which one of 1000 lightbulbs, 40 types of film and 200 shades of Max Factor lipstick you would need to select in order to get that Kubrick red lips. So at one moment, the butler arrives, asking for: “the gentleman from Ibiza”. He proceeded to inform me to follow him into yet another back room, because the hostess requested my presence. It was here that I meet, a wonderful and graceful lady in her 90s. She had only one question: “please describe to me, what the island looks like today”. After a careful recollection of local infrastructure and events she looked at me with glowing eyes and thanked me profoundly, for she had been here, on our precious island, many years ago, and had nothing but the fondest of memories. She went on to explain: “when I was a young girl, I was considered extraordinarily pretty, and the young prince from Estonia, whisked me away on a romantic journey to a little island in the Mediterranean. It was so beautiful and quaint, and the people were lovely, openhearted and eager to exchange ideas and Philosophy. This was the Ibiza that she had come to know. She had never been back, but she would never forget, what had become the single most romantic experience in a long life of plenty. So obviously I could not help myself but ask: Me: “When was this: Fabulous lady of timeless grace: “1922” 10

TAKE THAT, DINOSAURS!!! So what I am trying to say is this: This island is a multi-verse projected through time. Happiness is a choice, not a consequence of external events. Your age has nothing to do with the accumulation of years. Keep your heart light and your mind open. Each and every moment is the finest ever, you either get it or you don’t. Answer all the dinosaurs out there I have only this to say: Roll-over, your time has come. The petrification process of fossils takes millions of years: Now THERE is a party that YOU are late for! P.S. Don’t feed the dinosaurs.

EL DINOSAURIO DE IBIZA Son apenas unas cuantas de las personas que visitan nuestra isla quienes son conscientes del tristemente célebre dinosaurio de Ibiza. Acechando en la oscuridad en las fiestas VIP, puede ser que uno se tropiece con uno de estos raros especímenes. El dinosaurio es reconocible por sus tonos grises, sus colores pálidos, por su desesperanzada expresión de desilusión indiferente y por sus ojos en blanco. ¡Te recomiendo que sólo te aproximes a esta criatura si estás preparado para permitirle que te estropee la noche! Bueno, déjame que te explique exactamente lo que quiero decir recordando mi propia experiencia, la primera vez que hice contacto con uno de estos horribles distribuidores de depresión. Era el año 1991 y yo estaba moviéndome en la pista de baile, sumido en el amor y la música envolvente cuando me dirigí al bar para relajarme con las bebidas. En mi total euforia me volví hacia el individuo más cercano y dije: “¡esta isla es fantástica! ¡definitivamente me encanta!”. Para mi total sorpresa, el dinosaurio se volvió hacia mí y me dijo: “bueno, solía serlo… pero ahora se ha terminado todo.” ¡¿Eh?! Procedí a preguntarle a la prehistórica reliquia si estaba de broma. ¡Al parecer no! Y así, presencié por primera vez el mantra que recitan estas criaturas: “Hace algunos años, era fantástico, los clubs no tenían tejados, se ha terminado todo…” Ahora bien, esto fue en el año 1991 y este pesimista se estaba refiriendo al 1989. En tan sólo dos años, un conjunto de 100 metros cuadrados de construcción de tejados distribuidos uniformemente por todos los clubs, habían destruido todo lo que esta pobre alma podría posiblemente disfrutar en la isla. Yo estaba totalmente pasmado, pasándolo mejor que nunca bajo el tejado. En aquel momento creí que se trataba de un caso aislado. Pero resulta que no era así. Pronto me encontré con multitudes de bebés llorones, cuya única ocupación parece ser informar a todos que ellos:

Disastroso peinado de los 80: “no lo estábamos pasando bien”, “no lo entiendes”, “llegas demasiado tarde”, “has perdido el barco” y “condenado a una vida de miseria” y el insultante “Naciste demasiado tarde.” Yo: “¡¿Eh?!” A medida que proseguía, adentrándome lentamente en muchos de los círculos de sotisficadas altas sociedades, me encontré con especímenes incluso más viejos, quienes me informaron que: Dinosaurio Disco: “Verás, joven turista ignorante, ¡ya estaba totalmente acabado en los 80! En los 70 fue cuando realmente empezó. Franco salió de escena y se construyeron las discotecas, enseguida empezó a llegar la música disco y la cocaína. ¡Esos eran los buenos tiempos! Ha ido cuesta abajo desde entonces…” Yo: “¡¿Qué coño?!” Escapándome hacia la naturaleza, finalmente me encontré en las playas repletas de hippies del pasado. Aparentemente, esta especie mucho más antigua niega el hecho de que todo el mundo realmente lo pasaba bien en los 70. El argumento es algo así como lo siguiente: El populacho de la colonia libre: “los clubs lo arruinaron todo. Éramos libres y estábamos desnudos y bandas en directo tocaban acid rock. ¡¡¡Pero todo esto ha sido comercializado por esos que aman el dinero y odian el amor!!!” Yo: “Lo siento tanto por ti… ¡¡¡NO!!!” Llegados a este momento, concluyo que ese debe ser, probablemente, el último y más antiguo espécimen restante de estos dinosaurios. ¡Me equivocó otra vez! Tengo un interesante encuentro con la persona que era lo suficientemente mayor como para haber vivido la generación beat, uno de los también llamados beatniks. Para aquellos que no sepan lo que es un beatnik, permitidme explicarlo brevemente: los beatniks eran los miembros de un movimiento cultural que surgió en las universidades a lo largo de toda América y que rechazaban limitar su educación a la del mundo occidental. Mirando hacia la filosofía oriental, se sinceraron en debates existenciales y cuestionaron la mismísima esencia de la mentalidad moderna. En otras palabras: ellos fueron las mentes brillantes cuya prosa y poesía inspiró el surgimiento de los (de alguna manera menos intelectuales) hippies y la revolución no violenta del amor. Entre estas personas puedes encontrar a Allen Ginsberg y a William Burroughs. Yo tuve el gran honor de poner la banda sonora a la última lectura europea del señor Ginsberg en Italia. Él, como muchos otros de su clase, viajó a Tánger, Marruecos, en búsqueda de chicos baratos y de caballo para obtener inspiración. Era durante esos viajes que muchos de ellos paraban en una fantasmagórica isla de las Baleares llamada Eivissa. Para mi sorpresa, no había negatividad en el recuerdo: Beatnik: “pasábamos el rato fuera, alrededor de una hoguera en las playas mientras escribíamos, leíamos y quemábamos un poema tras otro. Después montábamos a caballo a pelo, en cueros (sin bromas), playa arriba y playa abajo, bajo la luz de la luna llena. Esos eran los buenos tiempos.” Yo: “¡Guau!” 12

En ese momento yo estaba convencido de que había encontrado, por fin, la primordial causa primera: esa minúscula bola de nieve que causó la avalancha que finalmente resultó en las condiciones que tú y yo disfrutamos aquí en la actualidad. ¡Equivocado otra vez! En el invierno del 2004, me mudé a Hollywood durante seis meses para dedicarme a uno de los mayores retos a los que me he enfrentado: grabar y remezclar todo el catálogo de Henry Mancini al lado de su hijo, Chris Mancini (el oído más rápido del oeste), y junto a la Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. Fue durante mi estancia allí que me encontré en una de las muchas fiestas privadas de West Hollywood. Yo estaba, como siempre, pasando el tiempo en la habitación de atrás, reservada para los productores, los técnicos y los dobles. Déjame que te diga esto, ¡no hay nada como salir de marcha con los dobles de Hollywood! Y los técnicos son de los mejorcito del mundo: conocen la combinación exacta de cuál de los 1000 focos, 40 tipos de película y 200 tonos de lápiz de labios Max Factor necesitas seleccionar para conseguir aquellos labios rojos de Kubrick. Así que, en determinado momento, aparece el mayordomo preguntando por “el caballero de Ibiza.” A continuación, me informa que debo seguirlo hasta otra habitación trasera, porque la anfitriona requería mi presencia. Fue entonces cuando conocí a una maravillosa y elegante señora de unos 90 años. Ella tenía una única pregunta: “por favor, descríbeme cómo es la isla hoy en día.” Después de una cuidadosa recolección de los eventos y la infraestructura local, me miró con los ojos brillando y me lo agradeció profundamente. Ella había estado aquí, en nuestra preciosa isla, hace muchos años, y no tenía nada más que los más cariñosos recuerdos. Continuó explicándome: “cuando yo era una niña, estaba considerada como extremadamente hermosa y el joven príncipe de Estonia me llevó en un viaje romántico a una pequeña isla del Mediterráneo. Era tan bonita y tan tranquila y las gentes eran encantadoras, de corazón abierto y deseosas de compartir ideas y filosofía.” Esta era la Ibiza que ella había conocido. Nunca había vuelto allí, pero nunca había olvidado la que llegaría a convertirse en simplemente la más romántica experiencia de las muchas que había tenido en su larga vida. Así que, obviamente, no conseguí evitar preguntarle: Yo: “¿Cuándo fue esto?” Fabulosa señora de elegancia atemporal: “1922” ¡CHUPAROS ESA, DINOSAURIOS! Lo que estoy intentando decir es esto: Esta isla es un multiverso proyectado a través del tiempo. La felicidad es una elección, no una consecuencia de los sucesos externos. Tu edad no tiene nada que ver con la acumulación de años. Mantén tu corazón iluminado y tu mente abierta. Todos y cada uno de los momentos es el mejor de todos los tiempos, o bien lo pillas o bien no. Respondiendo a todos los dinosaurios de ahí fuera, lo único que tengo que decir es: Rendiros, vuestra hora ha llegado. El proceso de petrificación de los fósiles dura millones de años: ¡ESA sí es una fiesta a la que VOSOTROS llegáis tarde! P.D. No alimentes a los dinosaurios.

FOR MENTE RA A TRUE PARADISE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN Formentera is an oasis of peace and tranquillity. Many musicians and artists have gotten and still get their inspiration on this island. Which is not surprising because with a size of 83,2 km², 69 km of coastline, magnificent beaches, turquoise waters and a perfect arrangement between tourism and nature one can safely call Formentera a true paradise in the Mediterranean. While the people on Ibiza meet to share a party, most people on Formentera want to share and enjoy the solitude. Let yourself too be seduced by the unique beauty of this island. That does not mean you can not have a good party over there, as you will find out soon.

FONDA PEPE

For a daytrip I recommend setting out early. If you missed catching a private yacht or do not have your own one you can still take one of the ferries that leave hourly from the Estación Marítima, Ibiza harbour. On the passage you’ll already notice how the wind and salt water clean all the stress from your soul. When you’ve arrived in the harbour of La Savina, you should first get yourself some sort of vehicle. Various rent-a-cars offer cars, motorbikes or the new electric bikes (we highly recommend using one of these...), and, for the athletic ones amongst you, also bicycles. There are perfect circuits to explore the island called ‘Green Circuits’. The rental prices differ greatly, so it’s worth checking out various companies. Don’t forget taking a map, the island is bigger than one might think. Fancy a good breakfast? Then you should go to San Francesc, the capital of Formentera. There’s a wide range of cafés and bars. For the granola fans among you I recommend the Café Matinal; also very good is the Ginovale. Behind the historical town hall square with its 17th century church is the restaurant Cana Pepa, where you get delicious fresh juices in the patio. You’ll immediately notice that Formentera and its inhabitants are very relaxed.

BLUE BAR

After breakfast you should take a stroll through the colourful shopping street. An important suggestion: Don’t forget to buy a good sunscreen and a hat. The sun is even stronger than in Ibiza, and if you don’t watch out, you’ll get roasted!!! Your stomach is full and you’re equipped with everything you need? Then it’s time to decide, sightseeing or beach! If you like sightseeing, you should do it in the early morning hours, before the midday heat, or afterwards, in the late afternoon, when it’s getting a little cooler. So let’s get on the westward road. Go first to Cap de Barbaria, the long, straight road leads directly to the windrugged plateau and lighthouse. The almost untouched landscape is unique, and it feels as if time had stopped. Enjoy the wonderful quiet and the murmur of the ocean along the cliffs, and if you’re lucky and catch a day with clear weather, you might even see Africa… Those who’ve seen the film “Lucia y el sexo” will surely remember the spectacular cave next to the sea. The entrance to this cave is right next to the lighthouse. The big hole in the rocky ground leads directly to the ocean. A must for climbers!!! If you’d rather go for a swim, right next to it is the bay of Cala

THE LEGENDARY MEHARI

Saona with its marvellous, inviting turquoise water. While you are lying on the white sandy beach, you begin to understand Formentera’s true charm. For those amongst you who’d rather have a lonely bay to themselves, we recommend going to Sa Pedrera. Between the rough rocks you find magnificent little spots where you’ll be undisturbed. Here you can forget all stress and feel like Robinson Crusoe, while watching Formentera’s blue salamanders bathing in the sun.

PIRATABUS

You’ve had enough solitude and your heart asks for some action? Then it’s time to set out to Ses Illetes and Platja Levant, Formentera’s most popular and frequented beaches. On the white sandy beaches everyone who wants to see and be seen gets together. A piece of advice: On most of the beaches there are special walkways. This has a particular reason: Formentera’s sand dunes have a very delicate ecosystem that can easily be destroyed. So, unfortunately, we have to mention this over and over again: “RESPECT NATURE AND KEEP YOUR ENVIRONMENT CLEAN”. You’ve got an empty stomach? Ses Illetes offers a wide variety of chiringuitos and restaurants. Our recommendation is Es Moli de Sal (upper price range), Tanga and Flipper & Chiller (name is program). When the midday heat is over, it’s time to get on the road again because Formentera has much more to offer. Your next destination should be La Mola in the east. Pass the salt flats of s’Estany Pudent and s’Estany des Peix (one of the oldest salt extracting plants in the Mediterranean) and head in the direction of Es Pujols, San Ferran. From there, the road leads up to the La Mola plateau, the lighthouse at the end of the world. There’s a book called “Every man is an island”, and it describes perfectly why so many people choose islands as their place for self-discovery. Well, though you’ll surely find many people in La Mola with the same idea, there will still be a little spot where you can be alone to enjoy the peace of those fantastic cliffs. On the way back you should stop in Es Pilar to visit its historical windmill. On Wednesdays and Sundays there’s an art market there. Some kilometres down the road you’ll find the lookout Es Mirador, offering a breathtaking view of Formentera.

DESERTED BEACH

For those wanting to catch some more sun there’s a difficult choice to be made. On the northern side there’s Cala Traumata, with lonely, rocky bays. On the south side there are the sandy beaches of Mitjorn and Arenal. There you’ll find a wide range of chiringuitos, restaurants and accommodation. We recommend the Pirata Bus at km 11, a seventies hippy bus converted into a beach bar, or the Sol y Mar at km 10.7, a real insiders’ tip! Around km 8 there are the beach bars Blanco and Lucky, and let’s not forget the legendary Blue Bar, with a unique ambience, nice service and good food. A great place to chill in a friendly atmosphere. You should also visit the Hemingway in Es Pujols, C/ Punta Prima 1. The day’s coming to an end and you should decide if you’ll take the last boat or stay overnight. Difficult decision! In case you stay you should start looking for a place to sleep. Formentera offers a wide variety of hostels and private accommodation. A good suggestion is the Hostal Bon Sol in San Ferran or the Hotel Bahia in La Savina. The Hotel Restaurant Las Banderas at Playa Mitjorn is a must as well, including a cool Lounge Bar! Another secret tip is the Hostal Rafalet in Es Calo de Sant Agusti.

If you want to go out you should start soon because the best parties happen at sunset! If you fancy more uptempo sounds you’ll enjoy the Blue Bar. Every evening for sunset (and sometimes a little longer) DJ Massivan and guests like George Solar turn the Wheels of Steel. So much fun you forgot to have dinner? In the legendary Fonda Pepe Bar in San Ferran you’ll get delicious Tapas until late. Still haven’t had enough fun? Then head for the tourist stronghold Es Pujols. There are loads of things to do. We recommend a visit to the local clubs Pachanqua or the ex-Xueño, since 2011 called by its original name from the 70’s again, Tipic. There you find the parties of Cocoon, a real jewel! Those who like it more traditional should try the stylish Casa Paco in La Savina to chill with a great Mojito or more.

GECKO BEACH CLUB

Whatever you do, we hope that Formentera will inspire you in its own way and that you take home the good memories and energies. Apart from that you will see no cranes, no tunnels, no road works, no cigarettes on the beaches, and, last but NOT least, no billboards polluting the environment. If you are owner of a private yate please bear in mind to not anchor where the posidonia resides, there is few left and it has great benefits for the sea, not just cleaning it. Just as we said: one of the last paradises in the Mediterranean! Next time you’re stuck in a traffic jam or some other kind of stressful situation just think about Formentera, it will relax you instantly. No joke...

Formentera es un oasis de paz y tranquilidad. Muchos músicos y artistas han encontrado y siguen encontrando su inspiración en esta isla. Nada sorprendente ya que con un tamaño de 83,2 km2, 69 km de costa, playas magnificas, aguas color turquesa y la combinación perfecta entre turismo y naturaleza, se puede llamar a Formentera el último paraíso del mediterráneo. Mientras que en Ibiza la gente se reúne para compartir la fiesta, en Formentera la mayoría de la gente quiere compartir y disfrutar de la soledad. Bueno, si que hay vida nocturna, y cada vez mas sorprendente - como os contamos mas tarde. Hasta allí déjate seducir por la belleza única de esta isla. Para una excursión de un día os recomiendo empezar temprano. Si no conozes un yate privado o no eres dueño de tu propio yate siempre puedes coger uno de los barcos que salen cada hora de la Estación Marítima del puerto de Ibiza. Ya en la travesía notarás como el viento y el agua salada limpian todo el estrés de tu alma. Al llegar al puerto de la Savina deberías conseguir algún tipo de vehículo. Hay varias compañías de alquiler de vehículos que ofrecen coches, motos o bicis eléctricas (os recomendamos usar una de estas…), y para los más atléticos, bicicletas. Hay buenos caminos de bíci llamado ‘Circuits Verds’ que te guían por toda la isla. Los precios de alquiler varían mucho así que merece la pena comprobar varios y comparar. No te olvides de llevar un mapa, la isla es más grande de lo que parece.

¿Te apetece un buen desayuno? Entonces deberías ir a la capital de Formentera, Sant Francesc. Hay una gran gama de cafés y bares. Para los fans del granola os recomiendo el Café Matinal; el Ginovale también es muy bueno. Detrás de la histórica plaza del ayuntamiento con su iglesia del siglo 17 está el restaurante Cana Pepa, donde puedes tomar deliciosos zumos frescos en el patio. Enseguida notarás que Formentera y sus habitantes son muy relajados. Después del desayuno deberías pasearte por la colorida calle de las tiendas. Una sugerencia importante: no te olvides de comprar un buen protector solar y un gorro. El sol pega incluso más fuerte que en Ibiza y si no tienes cuidado ¡te tostaras!

ES MIRADOR

¿Estomago lleno y equipado con todo lo que necesitas? Entonces es hora de decidir, ¡turismo o playa! Si te gusta hacer turismo deberías hacerlo temprano, antes del calor del mediodía, o después, por la tarde, cuando empieza a refrescar. Empecemos con la carretera hacia el oeste. Ve primero a Cap de Barbaria, esta carretera larga y recta lleva directamente al faro y a la meseta azotada por el viento. El paisaje casi intacto es único, y parece que se hubiese parado el tiempo. Disfruta del maravilloso silencio y el murmullo del océano por el acantilado, y si tienes suerte, en un día muy claro, puede que hasta veas África... Seguro que los que hayan visto la película “Lucia y el sexo” se acordaran de la cueva espectacular al lado del mar.¡Una visita obligada para los escaladores! Si prefieres darte un baño, al lado está Cala Saona con su maravilloso y apetecible agua color turquesa. Tumbado en la playa de arena blanca empiezas a comprender el verdadero encanto de Formentera. Para los que prefieren una solitaria cala para si mismos les recomendamos que vayan a Sa Pedrera. Entre las rocas accidentadas puedes encontrar sitios magníficos donde nadie te molestará. Aquí te puedes olvidar del estrés y sentirte como Robinson Crusoe mientras observas a las sargantanas azules de Formentera tomar el sol.

ES CALÓ DE SANT AGUSTI

¿Has tenido bastante soledad y necesitas un poco de acción? Entonces es hora de encaminarte a Ses Illetes y Platja Levant, las playas más populares y frecuentadas de Formentera. En estas playas de arena blanca se encuentran todos los que quieren ver y ser vistos. Un pequeño consejo: en casi todas las playas hay pasarelas especiales. Esto es por una razón: las dunas de Formentera tienen un ecosistema muy delicado que se puede estropear muy fácilmente. Así que desgraciadamente tenemos que repetir esto una y otra vez: “RESPETA LA NATURALEZA Y MANTÉN LIMPIO TU ENTORNO” ¿Tienes el estomago vacío? Ses Illetes ofrece una gran variedad de chiringuitos y restaurantes. Nuestra recomendación es el Moli de Sal (precios altos), Tanga y el Flipper & Chiller (nomen est omen). Una vez pasado el calor del mediodía es hora de moverse de nuevo ya que Formentera tiene mucho más que ofrecer. Tu siguiente destinación debería de ser La Mola, al este. Pasa al lado de las salinas de s’Estany Pudent y s’Estany des Peix (uno de los sistemas de extracción de sal más antiguos del mediterráneo) y entonces ve en dirección Es Pujols, San Ferran. Desde allí la carretera te lleva al altiplano de la Mola, y al faro al fin del mundo. Hay un libro titulado “Every man is an island” (Todo hombre es una isla), que describe perfectamente porque

tanta gente escoge una isla como lugar de auto-descubrimiento. Pues aunque seguramente encontrarás a mucha gente en la Mola por las mismas razones, todavía habrá un pequeño sitio para estar solo y disfrutar de los espectaculares acantilados. A la vuelta te deberías parar en Es Pilar para ver el molino histórico. Los miércoles y domingos hay un mercado de arte. Unos kilómetros después está Es Mirador, que ofrece una vista impresionante de Formentera.

PLATJA DE SES ILLETES

Para los que quieran tomar un poco más de sol hay que tomar una decisión difícil. Al norte está Cala Traumata, con solitarias calas rocosas. Al sur están las playas de arena Mitjorn y Arenal. Aquí encontrarás una gran variedad de chiringuitos, restaurantes y alojamientos. Te recomendamos el Pirata Bus en el km 11, un bus hippie de los 70 que ha sido convertido en bar de playa, o el Sol y Mar en el km 10,7, ¡un lugar recomendado por los lugareños! En el km 8 aprox. están los bares de playa Blanco y Lucky, y no nos podemos olvidar del legendario Blue Bar, ambiente único, servicio agradable y buena comida. El lugar perfecto para relajarse en un ambiente agradable. También deberíais visitar el Hemingway en Es Pujols, C/ Punta Prima 1. El día se acaba y tienes que decidir si te quedas la noche o coges el último barco. ¡Difícil decisión! Si te quedas tendrás que buscarte un sitio para la noche. Formentera ofrece una gran variedad de hostales y alojamiento privado. Una buena sugerencia es el Hostal Bon Sol en San Ferran, el Hotel Bahia en La Savina o el Hostal Rafalet en Es calo de Sant Agusti. ¡También tienes que visitar el hotel restaurante Las Banderas en la playa Mitjorn! ¡Si quieres salir tendrás que hacerlo pronto ya que las mejores fiestas son a la puesta de sol! Si lo que te apetece es un poco más uptempo te gustará el Blue Bar. Cada tarde pinchan allí DJ Massivan y invitados como George Solar hasta la puesta del sol (y a veces un poco más).

HOSTAL RAFALET

¿Te olvidaste de cenar con tanta diversión? En el legendario bar Fonda Pepe en San Ferran sirven deliciosas tapas hasta tarde. Justo a la vuelta de la esquina está Sa Garrafa donde tienes comida exótica y buena música algunos días de la semana. ¿Todavía no te has divertido bastante? Entonces dirígete al baluarte turista de Es Pujols. Aquí hay muchas cosas que hacer. Recomendamos una visita a las discotecas locales Pachanqua o el ex Xueño que desdel 2011 ha vuelto con su nombre original desde los 70, Tipic. Allí encuentras las fiestas de Cocoon y más, el club es una autentica joya. Hagáis lo que hagáis, esperamos que Formentera os inspire y que os llevéis a casa buenos recuerdos y energías. Aparte de eso allí no veras grúas, ni túneles, ni carreteras en construcción, ni colillas en la playa, y por último, pero no por ello menos importante, ninguna cartelera publicitaria contaminando el ambiente. Si eres el dueño de un yate por favor acuerdate de no fondear donde hay la posidonia ya que queda poca y nos sirve por muchas cosas, no solo por su habilidad de limpiar el mar... Como ya os hemos dicho: ¡uno de los últimos paraísos del Mediterráneo! La próxima vez que estéis en medio de un atasco o cualquier otro tipo de estrés pensad en Formentera, os relajará instantaneamente. No es broma...

SMART GUIDE ON HOW TO MAKE A LIVING IN IBIZA So you left your former life behind, family, friends, loved ones (or you brought them with you which can be a lot worse - but let me refer to this later) and decided to try finding the Holy Grail. Let‘s presume you are really good at something (otherwise you will not make it anyway), may it be a craft, an art or any profession related to what is going on here on this island. And let‘s exclude all the wannabe‘s (great words in the last edition, Lenny!), traitors, thiefs, pretenders or whatever other dark creatures run around making life difficult for those on the quest for happiness. First of all it is essential that you live here the whole year round, not just the season, as most of the pleasure seekers come here for a few months during the season trying to suck as much money as possible out of others without caring about the greater picture. Only in the off season you will be confronted with your inner self, watching the mirror in your most intimate moment and honestly smiling at yourself (pretending never works with yourself as you hopefully already know) is of the most difficult because it implies that you are happy with who you are and what you do in the widest sense. After you have lived a whole season you will quickly realize if all goes well or if, for many strange reasons, things do not seem to fall in place. This is due to the island’s very own energy, and if things go wrong I strongly advise you to think it over again as I have seen many people trying hard to overcome those numerous signs that it does not work out and most of them fail deplorable, ending with not even the money for a flight back home. In the

majority of the cases it is people who are not really sure if they want to stay here or not, and believe me, if you want to make it you have to be 110% sure, if not it is simply not worth the effort. So now that we have overcome the first obstacles it is time to get into the groove. Most of you come from a country where life is going in regular circles, me I come from northern Europe where everything is very structured, time is a reliable factor and you can take people’s word (almost) for granted. I was used to get things done in a certain, orderly way. How ignorant I was thinking that it would be the same down here… The more you try to impress your rhythm to what is going on around you the more desperate you become because nothing works out the way you thought. In fact, the harder you try the harder it hits you back. All of a sudden dear ‘Murphy’ is your best mate and it seems that his famous law is only applied to you and only you – ‘if anything can go wrong it will’ (read more about Murphy on page xxxxxxxxx)... Generally spoken this island has its very own speed, well calling it speed would be a great exaggeration as things down here take a while – a looong while, and you better get used to it. One easy exercise to see how being in a rush makes things go wrong is this one: Let’s say you drive from Sta. Eulalia to Ibiza town, if you push the pedal you will find a truck or really old ibiçencan driver in front of you – even worse a family tourist looking for the right way - then red lights flash everywhere and traffic gets stuck where it never happened before, and instead of saving time it takes you an eternity to get there. Now try the same drive while slowing down, taking things easy and you will see that the lights turn green, the expected traffic jam has vanished miraculously and you arrive earlier than you could have imagined and on top totally relaxed. Does that ring a bell? This lesson is to apply to all your activities, do not try to make things go your way, better go with the flow, it will save you from a future heart attack, give you the confidence you always wanted to have as things start falling into place, and it will generally make life possible for you in Ibiza. So now that we got the three most important requirements sorted out, qualification, confidence and rhythm let’s get to the many other obstacles that can make or take your days. As you might have realized there are very few overweight people living in Ibiza, and 99% of them are like they are due to a malfunction, not excessive eating. If you do not belong to this group of people then you have to take special care of your alimentation, we have incredible restaurants and life could be very easy if you are born a millionaire, but for most of us having to work for a living we simply do not have the money or time to go for dinner several times a week, in fact we hardly have time to sit down anywhere to have some decent food. If this sounds familiar to you then be warned, the less you eat the less hungry you become, until the point that you have to remember to eat in order to not suffer of malnutrition. It is essential that you eat well, no pre-cooked food or anything coming out of a microwave. Not the amount is decisive, it is the quality of food that marks the difference. What works best is a fresh smoothie in the morning, fruity or creamy is up to you, but fresh. Then something for in between, eating little but many times over the day is the healthiest anyway. No matter if you are vegetarian, meater or fisher, once a day you should try to eat a meal and take your time. As we know today a healthy mix of all kinds of food is the best for you, your body knows what is good for you anyway, you just have to listen consciously. 8.2

You think that’s funny? Have a look around, you can easily detect those ones around end of August, skinny to the bone, greyish color and dark rings under their eyes, and this is not originated by sole partying. Sleep is another serious issue, when temperatures rise above 30˚ even at night you will find yourself in trouble resting, and the non-existing routine of work hours does the rest, me I work 10 to 16 hours a day, sometimes in the earliest morning hours, sometimes during the day and sometimes at night, resulting in a completely messed up sleeping rhythm. The real challenge starts when you feel you should sleep but there is simply no time for it, this is the moment you tap into your emergency reserves, they normally are allocated for serious moments of danger, but here you will need them at any time. It is not funny having to work when others are on holiday, especially when friends stay at your house partying several days to then sleep for another few… When they then start looking at you telling you to join them and you refuse causing that certain serious expression on their face asking you if you are getting old - that is the moment you wish to beam them on another planet to leave you alone in your mission (im)possible. Anything left? Yes, I mentioned it in the beginning, relationships… Each and every couple I met that came here together did split up after a while as living together is very different down here. You will not have a regular life, no regular time-off together with your partner, first because there is no regularity here, second it is almost certain that, if you both have to work, your working hours will almost never match. Even if you meet the love of your life in Ibiza do not take anything for granted, this island holds so many unpredictable obstacles and personal challenges in their widest sense(s). And it is with great sadness that I have to say when things get rough, especially in the high season, endless discussions about jealousy, integrity and loyalty spread like an infectious disease, destroying even the most bulletproof relationship ripping apart love, desire and sex. Please listen to my words, do not start arguing in the eye of the storm that is the high season, detain your concerns until the pressure goes down and temperatures return to normal and you will see them vanish like ice cubes in the sun. You see, living in Ibiza is as easy as people say, we are on a never ending holiday, touching our balls 24/7 while spending money that falls from trees with both hands having multiple partners celebrating wild orgies enjoying our divine existence while our spirits are on their way to eternity. Ok, seriously, if all the above mentioned does not scare you there is a great chance you will make it, as the reward for all the hazzle is to meet the most outstanding characters you never even dared to think they could exist, on an island that is still of the most beautiful you will find, living a dream most do not even dare to challenge. Live your dream, don’t dream your life.

GUÍA PRÁCTICA DE CÓMO GANARSE LA VIDA EN IBIZA Has dejado atrás tu vida pasada, tu familia, tus amigos y tus seres queridos (o bien te los has traído contigo, lo que puede ser mucho peor –pero déjame que hable de eso más tarde) y has decidido intentar encontrar el Santo Grial. Vamos a presumir que eres muy bueno en algo (de otra manera, no lo conseguirías), tal vez sea un oficio, un arte o cualquier profesión relacionada con lo que sucede aquí en la isla. Y vamos a dejar fuera a todos los aspirantes (¡un fantástico artículo en la última edición, Lenny!), traidores, ladrones, pretendientes o cualquier otra oscura criatura que anda por ahí haciéndole la vida imposible a los que van en búsqueda de la felicidad. Para empezar, es primordial que vivas aquí todo el año, no solamente durante la temporada, ya que la mayor parte de los buscadores de placer vienen aquí a pasar unos meses durante la temporada, intentando sacarles a los demás tanto dinero como les sea posible y sin importarles en absoluto el cuadro completo. Tan sólo si tu yo de fuera de temporada se pudiera confrontar con tu yo interior, mirarte al espejo en tu momento más íntimo y sonreírte honestamente a ti mismo (pretender nunca funciona contigo mismo, como seguramente ya sabrás) es lo más difícil, porque implica que estás contento con quien eres y con lo que haces de manera más amplia. Después de que hayas vivido aquí una temporada completa enseguida te darás cuenta si todo va bien o si –por muchas y extrañas razones- las cosas parecen no funcionar bien. Esto se debe a la propia energía de la isla, y si las cosas no van bien, te recomiendo encarecidamente que lo reconsideres, ya que he visto a mucha gente intentando con todas sus fuerzas sobreponerse a estas numerosas señales de que no funciona y la mayoría de ellas fallaron lamentablemente, acabando sin siquiera el dinero suficiente para un vuelo de vuelta a casa. En la mayoría de los casos se trata de gente que no estaba segura de si quería quedarse aquí o no y, créeme, si quieres lograrlo tienes que estar 110% seguro, si no simplemente no merece la pena el esfuerzo. Así que, ahora que hemos superado los primeros obstáculos es hora de coger el ritmo. La mayoría de vosotros venís de un país donde la vida se mueve en círculos regulares. En mi caso, yo vengo del norte de Europa, donde todo es muy estructurado, el tiempo es un factor confiable y puedes dar (casi) por hecho la palabra de la gente. Yo estaba acostumbrado a hacer las cosas de una determinada y organizada manera. Qué ignorante era pensando que sería lo mismo por aquí… Cuánto más intentes marcar tu ritmo con lo que sucede a tu alrededor, más desesperado te sentirás, porque nada funciona de la manera que tú pensabas. De hecho, cuánto más lo intentes, con más fuerza te golpeará. De repente, el querido ‘Murphy’ es tu mejor amigo y

parece que su famosa ley se refiere a ti y solamente a ti – ‘si algo puede salir mal, seguro que lo hará’ (lee más acerca de Murphy en la página xxxxxxx). Generalmente hablando, esta isla tiene su propia velocidad. Bueno, llamarla velocidad sería una gran exageración, porque las cosas por aquí toman su tiempo – muuuucho tiempo, y es mejor que te vayas acostumbrando. Un sencillo ejercicio para ver cómo tener prisa hace que las cosas salgan mal es el siguiente: Digamos que conduces de Sta. Eulalia hasta la ciudad de Ibiza, si empiezas a pisar el acelerador te encontrarás con un camión o con un viejo conductor ibicenco justo delante de ti –o aún peor, una familia de turistas buscando el camino correcto-. Después todos los semáforos estarán en rojo y el tráfico empezará a acumularse en lugares en los que nunca lo había hecho y, en lugar de ahorrar tiempo, te llevará una eternidad llegar hasta allí. Ahora bien, intenta el mismo recorrido conduciendo lentamente, tomándote las cosas con calma y verás como los semáforos se ponen verdes, los esperados atascos desaparecen milagrosamente y llegas antes de lo que habías imaginado y por encima totalmente relajado. ¿Te suena de algo? Esta lección es aplicable a todas tus actividades. No intentes hacer las cosas a tu manera, mejor sigue la corriente, te salvará de un ataque al corazón en el futuro, te dará la confianza que siempre has querido tener al ver cómo las cosas comienzan a salir bien y, en general, hará posible tu vida en Ibiza. Así que ahora que ya tenemos tres de los requisitos más importantes resueltos: cualificación, confianza y ritmo, pasemos a los otros muchos obstáculos que pueden alegrarte o estropearte el día. Como es posible que te hayas dado cuenta, hay muy poca gente con sobrepeso viviendo en Ibiza y el 99% de ellos parece que lo sean debido a alguna disfunción, no por comer en exceso. Si no perteneces a este grupo de gente, entonces tienes que tener especial cuidado con tu alimentación. Aquí tenemos restaurantes increíbles y la vida puede ser muy fácil si has nacido siendo millonario, pero para la mayoría de nosotros que tenemos que trabajar para vivir, simplemente no disponemos del dinero o del tiempo para comer fuera varias veces por semana. De hecho, prácticamente no tenemos tiempo para sentarnos donde quiera que sea para comer algo decente. Si esto te suena familiar, entonces quedas avisado, cuanto menos comas, menos hambriento te sentirás, hasta el punto en el que tengas que acordarte de comer para no sufrir malnutrición. Es esencial que comas bien, no comida precocinada o nada que venga del microondas. La cantidad no es decisiva, es la calidad de la comida la que marca la diferencia. Lo que funciona mejor es un smoothie recién hecho por las mañanas, cremoso o con frutas, como quieras, pero recién hecho. Después, algo para tomar entre horas; comer poco pero muchas veces a lo largo del día es lo más saludable en cualquier caso. Sin importar si eres vegetariano, carnívoro o amante del pescado, una vez al día deberías intentar hacer una comida propiamente dicha y tomarte tu tiempo. Como sabemos hoy en día, una mezcla de todos los tipos de alimentos es lo mejor para la salud; en cualquier caso, tu cuerpo sabe lo que es mejor para ti, sólo tienes que escucharlo a consciencia.

Dormir es otro serio problema cuando las temperaturas se elevan por encima de los 30º, incluso por las noches te encontrarás con problemas para descansar y la rutina no existente de horas de trabajo hará el resto. Yo, por ejemplo, trabajo de 10 a 16 horas al día, a veces a primeras horas de la mañana, a veces durante el día y a veces por la noche, lo que resulta en un ritmo de sueño completamente caótico. El verdadero desafío empieza cuando sientes que deberías dormir, pero simplemente no tienes tiempo para ello. Ese es el momento en el que recurres a tus reservas de emergencia, las que normalmente están asignadas para serios momentos de peligro, pero aquí las necesitarás a cualquier hora. No es divertido tener que trabajar mientras los demás están de vacaciones, sobre todo cuando tus amigos se quedan en tu casa para irse de fiesta durante varios días y luego dormir durante otros tantos… Cuando empiezan a mirarte, pidiéndote que te unas a ellos y entonces tú te niegas, causando esa inevitable expresión en sus caras, preguntándote si te estás haciendo viejo –ese es el momento en el que desearías mandarlos a otro planeta para que te dejen tranquilo en tu misión (im)posible. ¿Nos falta algo? Sí, lo mencioné al principio: relaciones… Todas y cada una de las parejas que he conocido que llegaron aquí juntas terminaron rompiendo después de un tiempo, ya que la vida juntos es muy diferente por aquí. No tendrás una vida normal, nada de tiempo libre para estar con tu pareja con regularidad, porque aquí no existe la regularidad. Además, es casi seguro que si los dos tenéis que trabajar vuestros horarios de trabajo casi nunca coincidan. Incluso si conoces al amor de tu vida en Ibiza, no des nada por seguro. Esta isla tiene tantos obstáculos impredecibles y tantos cambios personales en su(s) sentido(s) más amplio(s). Es con gran pesar que debo decir que cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles, sobre todo durante la temporada alta, las discusiones interminables sobre celos, integridad y lealtad se propagan como una enfermedad infecciosa, destruyendo incluso la más fuerte de las relaciones, destrozando amor, deseo y sexo. Por favor, escucha bien lo que te digo, no empieces una discusión en mitad de la tormenta que es la alta temporada, retén tus preocupaciones hasta que la presión disminuya y las temperaturas vuelvan a la normalidad y verás como desaparecen como cubitos de hielo bajo el sol. Ya ves, vivir en Ibiza es tan fácil como dice la gente. Vivimos en unas vacaciones interminables, tocándonos las pelotas todo el día mientras gastamos el dinero que nos cae a puñados de los árboles, teniendo múltiples parejas y celebrando orgías salvajes, disfrutando nuestra divina existencia mientras nuestros espíritus emprenden su camino hacia la eternidad.

¿Crees que es gracioso? Echa un vistazo a tu alrededor. Puedes detectar fácilmente a esos que a finales de agosto terminan en los huesos, con la piel grisácea y oscuros círculos bajo los ojos, y esto no es únicamente a causa de tanto salir de fiesta.

Vive tu sueño, no sueñes tu vida.

Vale, en serio, si todo lo dicho anteriormente no te asusta, existe una gran posibilidad de que lo consigas. Y la recompensa por todo el follón es encontrarse con los más espectaculares personajes que nunca te atreverías a pensar que pudieran existir, en una isla que todavía es la más hermosa que puedas encontrar, viviendo el sueño que la mayoría ni siquiera se atreve a intentar.

Some of my colleagues already wrote stories about the freedom of press in our democracy, or that is what we are supposed to think it is. One traditional form of media is to publish a magazine, there you got two ways to communicate – tell a story through words or pictures – mostly with both. Talking about the latter is my topic of this short essay: The problem originates with the manufacturers of smartphones thinking the best way to sell more phones is to implement as many functions into it as possible, one is the constant flashlight leaving the torch companies in ruin, another is the nowadays commonly included camera that often beats the standard digital camera everybody was carrying around apart from their phone. 40

Sounds like a relief, one gadget less to carry around, but the other side of the coin is the fact that some years ago the clubs reserved the right to confiscate your camera when entering a club, today this is not so easy as everybody has the right to carry a phone. In Germany, one of Berlin’s most famous clubs, the Berghain, refuses their guests the use of these phones, as does Watergate as well. If they catch you taking pictures or filming you have to leave the club. Well done in my opinion, you can always use it to call but you won’t be heard anyway in a club. Ever asked yourself why they do that? Besides of the very annoying fact that it ruins every good party vibe having to pass by immotile individuals not enjoying the party (wise words Mr.

Simon!) but recording it onto their phones to immortalize something they did not enjoy at the very moment it is a serious violation of privacy and sometimes results in very unfavorable pictures being spread on any social network possible. But a lot worse is the fact that more and more venues do have very strict rules for officially accredited photographers on what pictures they are allowed to take, disregarding the fact that an honest photographer would never publish any compromising shots, otherwise he would cut the branch he is sitting on anyway. A not-so-honest form of photographer is the Paparazzi, nobody likes to be chased against their will disliking what they do, only

the publishers of tabloid press love them and mostly even hire them, paying fortunes to see the disadvantageous orange peel of Mrs. Whoever or the beer belly of Mr. Whatever, selling their grunge to millions of unsatisfied readers to make them feel better and forget their own miserable life. Strictly speaking all those who take pictures of anybody and everything everywhere they go are doing exactly the same, maybe not on purpose but the outcome is often the same, and it disrespects the work of an honest photographer and limits every day more the job of serious media with the aim to reflect the interesting, diverse, beautiful, unusual or whatever world we live in without violating anybodies privacy, except you agree with it. There are specific laws on which and how pictures can be taken without having to ask the permission of any person on the picture, and any professional photographer is very aware of this, always having release forms in his pocket to make the person(s) sign this form which is an agreement on how the picture can be used. Those laws are there to protect our privacy, to not have taken pictures that can be misinterpreted, are taken out of context and abused to transport misinformation. One of the results of abusive picture shooting is that more and more clubs have their own inhouse photographer and all media receive the same pictures to choose from, out comes a synchronized review that looks the same in all publications – how boring is that? You wouldn’t want to read the same words in each magazine either, would you? In 14 years of existence of dub magazine we never ever had any compromising picture published, did not receive one single complaint and we do not plan to get one in the future, so we will not accept any censorship on what or where we want to cover, our sole aim is to showcase one of the most interesting places on the planet, with all its diversity and colors, people of all kind and situations you only dream of wherever you come from. And if anybody or any venue does not agree on that, we won’t complain and will simply not cover it, because quality never prostitutes. Algunos de mis colegas ya han escrito historias sobre la libertad de prensa en nuestra democracia, o eso es lo que se supone que debemos creer que es. Un medio tradicional de comunicación es publicar una revista, en ese caso tienes dos maneras de comunicar: contar una historia a través de las palabras o por medio de imágenes; lo habitual es utilizar ambas. Hablar de la última manera, las imágenes, es justo el tema de este breve ensayo El problema se origina cuando los fabricantes de smartphones piensan que la mejor manera de vender más móviles es añadiendo tantas funciones como sea posible. Una de ellas es la luz constante que ha dejado a las compañías de linternas en la ruina, otra es la hoy en día tan comúnmente incluida cámara, que tan a menudo le gana la batalla a la cámara digital normal que todo el mundo solía llevar encima además del móvil. Suena como un alivio, un aparato menos que hay que cargar, pero el otro lado de la moneda es el hecho de que hace algunos años los clubs se reservaban el derecho a confiscarte la cámara cuando entrabas en el club, hoy en día no es tan fácil, ya que todo el mundo tiene derecho a llevar encima un teléfono. En Alemania, uno de los clubs más famosos de Berlín, el Berghain, niega a sus invitados el derecho a usar estos teléfonos, así como también lo hace el Watergate. Si te pillan haciendo fotos o filmando tienes que abandonar el club. Bien hecho, en mi opinión; siempre puedes usarlo para hacer una llamada, pero de todas maneras no te van a oír mientras estás dentro del club. ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado por qué hacen eso? Además del realmente irritante hecho de que el tener que pasar entre individuos inmóviles que no están disfrutando de la fiesta (¡sabias palabras Mister Simon!) sino grabándolo con sus teléfonos para inmortalizar algo que no disfrutaron en su momento estro42

pea cualquier buen ambiente de fiesta, es además una seria violación de privacidad y resulta en unas muy desfavorables fotografías repartidas por cualquier red social imaginable. Pero mucho peor es el hecho de que más y más lugares poseen normas muy estrictas para fotógrafos oficialmente acreditados sobre qué fotografías se les permite tomar, sin importar el hecho de que un fotógrafo honesto nunca publicaría ninguna foto comprometedora, de otra manera estaría tirando piedras a su propio tejado. Una forma no tan honesta de fotógrafo es el paparazzi. A nadie le gusta que lo persigan contra su voluntad, fastidiando todo lo que hace. Sólo les gustan a los editores de los tabloides y la mayoría incluso los contrata, pagando fortunas para ver la desfavorable piel anaranjada del Sr. Quien-Sea o la barriguita cervecera de la Sra. Cualquiera, vendiendo su porquería a millones de lectores insatisfechos para hacer que se sientan mejor y para olvidar su propia y deprimente vida. Rigurosamente hablando, todos los que sacan fotografías de todos y de todo, en cualquier lugar al que vayan están haciendo exactamente lo mismo. Tal vez no a propósito, pero el resultado es a menudo el mismo y falta al respeto al trabajo de un fotógrafo honesto y, cada día más, limita el trabajo de los medios de comunicación serios cuyo objetivo es reflejar el interesante, diverso, bello, inusual o lo que quieras mundo en el que vivimos son violar la privacidad de nadie, a no ser que esté de acuerdo con ello. Existen leyes específicas acerca de qué fotografías y cómo estas pueden tomarse sin tener que pedir permiso a cualquier persona de la fotografía y cualquier fotógrafo profesional es muy consciente de esto, llevando siempre encima autorizaciones para que la(s) persona(s) firmen dicha autorización, la cual es un acuerdo de cómo puede usarse la fotografía. Estas leyes existen para proteger nuestra privacidad, para evitar que se tomen fotografías que puedan ser malinterpretadas, puedan sacarse de contexto o que pueda hacerse mal uso de ellas para transportar información errónea. Uno de los resultados de la toma abusiva de fotografías es que más y más clubs tienen su propio fotógrafo inhouse y todos los medios de comunicación reciben las mismas fotografías de entre las que escoger. Y es entonces cuando aparece una crítica sincronizada que parece ser la misma en todas las publicaciones - ¿cómo de aburrido es eso? Tampoco querrías leer las mismas palabras en todas las revistas, ¿verdad? En los 14 años de existencia de la revista dub nunca hemos publicado ninguna fotografía comprometedora, no hemos recibido ni una sola queja y no tenemos pensado recibir ninguna en el futuro, así que no aceptamos ninguna censura sobre dónde o qué queremos cubrir. Nuestro único objetivo es mostrar uno de los más interesantes lugares del planeta, con toda su diversidad y sus colores, gente de todo tipo y situaciones sobre las que tan sólo soñarías de donde quiera que provengas. Y si alguien o algún lugar no está de acuerdo con esto, no nos quejaremos y simplemente no lo cubriremos, porque la calidad nunca se prostituye.

Our underground radio was born out of a dream of freedom, the freedom to stand out from the crowd and to play the music that really represent a different choice from all the other commercial radios out there. We don’t try to please the people with the sound that they already like, we only care about exposing something really new, something not driven by the commercial logics between all the other radios. WHAT IS THE MAIN FOCUS OF AUDIENCE? Our main focus is the underground scene. We have listeners everywhere, of every age living in every country, especially in Europe but also in Japan, Russia, Australia and many other very far places. People bored of all the other radios proposing the same music over and over, bored of the advertisement, bored to hear always the same thing every day. Our main audience is composed by people who know how much the underground music is related with freedom, and who can understand new styles of music because they love it. WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU COVER? From deep house to techno, without the fear of pushing too hard or to have a DJ that expresses himself throughout an eclectic music selection. Underground music is so ahead that most of the crowd is not ready to hear, and that’s why we give the DJs the freedom to play whatever they want without the usual restrictions when playing for other commercial radios out there. HOW DO YOU FINANCE THE STATION? Mostly out of our own pocket, for now, and thanks to some friend’s donations. That’s why we are looking for a good sponsor that understands and supports our underground radio. WHAT IS THE POWER OF RADIO? Not being driven by major labels and not trying to stay in a certain music scheme to please more people is the thing that the crowd really loves more. No commercials, 24/7 of pure music. IF ANYTHING CAN GO WRONG, IT WILL We all know the infamous ‘Murphy’s Law’, it is a constant companion in our daily lives, always in those moments of high pressure something goes wrong and you ask yourself ‘how the hell could this happen’? Murphy’s Law is confirmed to have its origin at a military Base called Edward’s Air Force Base in the United States at North Base in 1949. Captain Edward A. Murphy was an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981, a project to find out about how much deceleration a human being can stand in a crash. Before this test it was confirmed that a human being could stand a maximum of 18 G but this was not enough to survive a plane crash, so they wanted to see how far they could really go. The test consisted in a sort of rocket sled on a railway, powered by four massive rocket bottles to go way over 200 mph, a seat fixed on top with a windshield in front due to the very high speed, the breaking system looked like Dinosaur teeth but was a hydraulic system that would bring the sled to stand in less than a second... One day, at the final preparations to this test, Edward A. Murphy found out that a transducer (measuring component tool on the seatbelt to find out how much pressure the belt gets while breaking) was wired the wrong way and he stated to one of the responsible technicians ‘if there is any way to do it wrong, he’ll find it.’ After using a dummy called ‘Oscar Eightball’, in the beginning of a series of tests, a real person called John Paul Stapp took his place and made it up to 35 G’s, proving that all former evaluation had been wrong, changing the design of airplanes and pilot restraints forever.

Years later, in another installment, he outnumbered his record reaching a speed of 632 miles per hour - faster than a speeding bullet - and encountered 46.2 G’s of force – an unbroken record up to present. Stapp was a lot more extroverted and had a great sense of humor, something very necessary when you agree to be fixed on a sled going faster than a bullet just to break down in less than a second. History says he was mainly responsible for spreading the word about Murphy’s Law than Edward Murphy himself, in any case this incident would entail an endless number of laws that were associated with the original phrase, and up to present it is one of the most applicable laws that accompany us in our daily lives. Remarkable is as well the way in which Edward A. Murphy died, history says he ran out of gasoline and had to stop on a freeway in the late evening. As he hitchhiked to the next gas station, dressed in white and clearly visible for the other road users he got run over by a British tourist who was driving on the wrong side of the road… If anything can go wrong it will. The final conclusion of all this is to try and prepare whatever you want to do in the best possible way so the chances it can fail come close to zero, but even then one of the best laws comes to life: There is no such thing as the perfect plan. Here are some of the best laws that found their way into the endless list of the ‘Murphy’s Law’ collection, being build up globally since Edward brought the essence of it to life: The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle.

However, on a press conference held shortly after this groundbreaking event, John Paul Stapp answered a question of a journalist asking ‘How is it that no one has been severely injured – or worse – during the tests?’ with the quote ‘we do all of our work in consideration of Murphy’s Law’ – the legend was born and journalists took it out to the rest of the world. David Hill, who was in charge of the telemetry gear that collected all of the given test data, brought it down to the point saying ‘If you could predict all the possible things that could go wrong, you could also find a way to prevent catastrophe.’ Stapp had his own version of the famous words from Murphy, saying ‘the universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle’, but him and Hill had to admit that Murphy nailed it to the point.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

To see what came out of this series of tests is nothing short of life-changing inventions. Stapp helped to develop the threepoint seatbelt for cars as in the 50’s they had absolutely no security measures, a seatbelt was not even available as an additional extra, suspensions and breaks were miserable and the frame constructions of cars were completely rigid, so any passenger would fly around being torn to pieces in a severe car crash. And as said, as well airplanes and pilot restraints were redesigned after his tests. He finally outnumbered the former maximum of 18 G’s by more than the double during his tests, wearing no helmet and only shorts and t-shirt, breaking various bones accompanied by some severe inner injuries, but he was so convinced of his very

Se ha confirmado que la Ley de Murphy tuvo origen en el año 1949 en los Estados Unidos, en una base militar llamada Base Aérea Militar Edward, en la Base Norte. El Capitán Edward A. Murphy era un ingeniero que trabajaba en el Proyecto MX981 de las Fuerzas Aéreas, un proyecto cuyo propósito era descubrir cuánta desaceleración podía soportar un ser humano durante una colisión. Antes de este test, se había confirmado que un humano podía soportar un máximo de 18 G, pero esto no era lo suficiente para sobrevivir a un accidente de avión, así que querían ver hasta dónde podían llegar realmente. Pero incluso entonces una de las mejores leyes cobra vida: El plan perfecto no existe. Aquí están algunas de las mejores leyes que se han ganado un puesto en la interminable lista de la colección de la “Ley de Murphy,” habiendo aumentado a nivel mundial desde que Edward dio vida a su esencia: La aptitud universal para la ineptitud hace que cualquier logro humano sea un milagro incredible. Si parece demasiado bueno para ser verdad, probablemente lo es. Nada mejora con la edad. El sexo es la cosa que toma la menor cantidad de tiempo y que causa la mayor cantidad de problemas. Stapp era mucho más extrovertido y tenía un gran sentido del humor, algo muy necesario cuando estás de acuerdo en que te fijen a un trineo que va más rápido que una bala tan sólo para frenarte en menos de un segundo. La historia cuenta que él es el principal responsable en dar a conocer la Ley de Murphy, mucho más que el propio Murphy. En cualquier caso, este incidente implicaría un interminable número de leyes que se asociaron con la frase original y, hasta el presente, es una de las leyes más relevantes que nos acompañan en nuestro día a día.

La tecnología multimillonaria no vale nada en manos de idiotas. Cualquier cable cortado a medida será demasiado corto. Nunca subestimes la incompetencia. Los relojes van más rápidos durante el tiempo libre. No eres lo suficientemente joven como para saberlo todo.

Extraordinario es también el modo en el que Edward A. Murphy murió. La historia cuenta que, una tarde, se le acabó la gasolina y tuvo que pararse en una autopista. Mientras hacía dedo para llegar a la gasolinera más próxima -vestido de blanco y claramente visible para el resto de los conductores- lo atropelló un turísta británico que conducía en el sentido contrario de la carretera… Si algo puede salir mal, seguro que lo hará. La conclusion final de todo esto es intentar y preparar cualquier cosa que quieras hacer de la mejor manera posible, para que las posibilidades de que falle sean lo más próximas a cero posible.

Errar es humano. Si el enemigo está dentro del alcance, también lo estás tú. Cualquier cosa funcionará si la manoseas durante suficiente tiempo. Todas las generalizaciones son falsas, incluída esta. Cualquier cosa que se pueda medir, es demasiado pequeña. 8.2

DELMAR AND ALVARO ARE THE TWO ARTISTS THAT FORM ‘LOS SURUBA’, A NAME THAT IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. SINCE TWO YEARS THEY LIVE IN IBIZA AND BECAME THE RESIDENTS OF ANTS IN USHUAÏA. WE ARE SITTING IN A PRIVATE CLUB IN THE VENUE TALKING ABOUT LIFE, MUSIC AND MORE. YOU MET IN 2001 BUT WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL ROOTS? DELMAR: At the age of 14 I started interesting myself in music, Hip Hop as well as Rock, but it was Melodic Hardcore that really motivated me to get into it. I started taking singing lessons, got myself a Bass and formed a band called Naskiturus. Then, at 16, I attended my first Reggae concert and saw somebody playing music for the first time, it was a Japanese playing Reggae, Dub, Ska… I freaked. A few days after I sold my Bass (with 16 you do not have money for everything) and with the money made I got my first record player and a second hand mixer. Gigs in clubs and parties followed… A few years later I got a residency in an after party in Madrid and at the same time i started my career as Designer, where I then met Alvaro at the University. ALVARO: As a young kid I was into Hip Hop, Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. After a while I discovered Prodigy being something fresh with a touch of Electronica. After that I developed my passion for electronic music. WHERE DOES THE NAME ‘LOS SURUBA’ COME FROM – YOU LIKE WILD ORGIES? - - -LAUGHS... DELMAR: After a few years making parties we decided to take things more serious and created our own brand and just as we were looking for a name to it I had a visit from my cousin from Brazil, we went out partying and I started asking him for Brazilian names for our brand, and amongst the ideas he gave me the one I liked the most was ‘Suruba’, so I said ‘that sounds exotic but what does it mean?’ and he told me it would mean ‘orgy, a really wild one’ and I liked it a lot… The next day I told Alvaro and well, that is how ‘Suruba’ was born. We like the name, not for its sexual context but if you take it to our environment it can unite all the things we like: an orgy of art, music, design combined with entertainment and people of all kind, colour and race – that is what ‘Suruba’ means to us. Later on we found out that ‘Suruba’ as well was the name of the Roman district where all the 64

parties and orgies were held. So because we chose this name for our label people started calling us ‘Los Suruba’, it was a natural development as the crowd named us that way, not us. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE LABEL, AS FAR AS I UNDERSTOOD IT CONSISTS OF FOUR DIVISIONS WITH FOUR DIFFERENT STYLES? ALVARO: The basic label is ‘Suruba’, it is the most open of all in terms of style, we published almost 80 releases, 17 of it on vinyl… Later we created ‘Suruba X’, it is the most dark and personal, where we edit music without an urge to reach a high rank in sales. For now we published 8 releases on vinyl and 25 in digital format. Another one is ‘Suruba D’, it was created for all the amount of music we received from other artists that we could not press on vinyl. With the time it became more Indie, Disco and Electro. And the last one is ‘Playa’, more like a series included in ‘Suruba’ with a more organic sound, music for Beach Clubs, sunsets, warm and elegant sounds. DO YOU PRODUCE DIFFERENT MUSIC THAN THE ONE YOU PLAY? DELMAR: Sometimes yes, sometimes no, we as well play different music according to what is released on the market at the time. ALVARO: On top sometimes you feel like producing something different than the music you currently play, so there is always variation in both worlds. YOU PRODUCED FOR LEGENDARY LABELS LIKE NOIR, GET PHYSICAL, CULPRIT AND STIL VOR TALENT, HOW DID THESE COLLABORATIONS COME TO LIFE? ALVARO: Noir was the first influential label that published our music. We sent a track to Get Physical that we produced together with Edu Imbernon, and as they did not reply after 3 or 4 months we decided to get together again with Edu to produce a B-side and send it off to a different label - funny enough the very same day we receive a mail from M.A.N.D.Y. stating they would take ‘Torete’ if we would produce a B-side for it! To Culprit we sent our following release together with Edu – ‘Fayer’ which was awarded Track of the Year in 2013 at the Vicious Music Awards. SO I GUESS NOW IT’S EASIER TO GET HEARD AS EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU, NO? ALVARO: Well, now things are a bit easier yes, but it’s still difficult, you have to work hard to maintain a certain level as there are more and more young producers out there with great talent.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IBIZA, YOU ARRIVED IN 2012?

HOW GREAT WINTER CAN BE, NO?

ALVARO: In 2012 we came here to stay, but we visit the island since many years, my first time was at the age of 15, I went to Pacha and freaked out, after this impact I returned most of the summers. I guess there is nothing comparable anywhere in our world.

DELMAR: Oh yes, everything is so close, you got more time for yourself and to meet with friends and other producers to make music together (there are so many incredible studios here…). It feels so good you don’t want to leave to play the weekend abroad…

DELMAR: My first time was with 19 in 1999, that summer changed my life and I instantly knew this is the place I want to live one day. We didn’t come for a while around 2005/06 because the island became very popuar and changed, but the island calls you and if you still like it after two years you die to come back for it. ALVARO: In 2011 we came to produce ‘Torete’ with Edu, we closed ourselves in for one week making music, the computer broke and we encountered a lot of disasters, but finally things worked out. That same year Edu said he would love us to stay and live together. So we all rented a house for the following season and after that Delmar and I decided to stay for a living. HOW DID THE CONNECTION WITH ANTS AND USHUAÏA COME TO LIFE? ALVARO: We were in Qatar to play when we got a mail from a friend telling us that the director of Ushuaïa wanted to get to know us, we decided to meet him as we thought he wanted us to play some day. When we left our first meeting we thought it’s Candid Camera as we could not believe what they had offered us. They asked us to be an important part of Ants as residents and wanted us to invite and suggest other artists. We are in our second year already and at present it is amongst the parties with the highest rebound creating a real sensation in and out of Ibiza.

DELMAR: Con 14 años empecé a interesarme por la música, tanto por el Hip Hop como por musica Rock etc , pero fue el Hardcore melodico el estilo que me motivó para iniciarme en la música. Me apunté a clases de solfeo, me compré un bajo y monté un grupo llamado Naskiturus. Con 16 años fui a mi primer concierto Reggae y allí fue donde vi por primera vez a alguien pinchar… era un DJ Japones que pinchaba Reggae, Dub, Ska… flipé. A los pocos días estaba vendiendo mi bajo (con 16 años no tienes dinero para todo) y con lo que saqué me compré mi primer plato y una mesa de 2ª mano. Empezé a tocar en clubs, fiestas… Un par de años después conseguí una residencia en un after de Madrid, a la par comencé mi carrera de diseñador y fue allí en la universidad donde conocí a Alvaro. ALVARO: De joven me gustaba el Hip Hop, grupos como Beastie Boys ó Public Enemy. Con el tiempo descubrí Prodigy que era algo nuevo y con un toque más electronico. Luego ya comenzó mi pasión por la música electrónica. WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT DUB IBIZA? DELMAR: It always was the magazine about Ibiza for me, the one you want to get when you arrive on the island and leave in your bathroom to read it patiently. As a kid I dreamt of being one of the DJs to be interviewed… and here I am! Oh, and I always wanted to appear in your collage of heads – I love it! ALVARO: Last year I found myself in and said ‘YES – I did it!’ DELMAR: Yeah fucker! It’s an authentic magazine that reflects the island’s lifestyle. ALVARO: And it did not go down the drain with the years, you maintain your style and this is to admire. Risas… DELMAR: Después de unos años haciendo fiestas decidimos tomárnoslo en serio y montar nuestra propia marca, justo estábamos buscando el nombre para ella cuando vino a visitarme un primo mío de Brasil, salí de fiesta con él y me dio por preguntarle por palabrotas en brasileño, me dijo varias pero entre todas, la que mas me gustó fue Suruba, yo le dije ‘suena muy exotico pero que significa?’ y el me dijo que significaba ‘orgía pero super cerda’ jjaja me encantó… Al día siguiente se lo conté a Alvaro y bueno asi nació Suruba. Nos gusta el nombre pero no por aspecto sexual, sino porque es una palabra y concepto que si lo llevas a nuestro ámbito, puede reunir en él todo lo que nos gusta; una orgía de arte, música, diseño junto con diversión y personas de todo tipo, raza y condición - eso es Suruba para nosotros. 8.2

Mas tarde nos enteramos que Suruba también era el nombre del barrio de la antigua Roma donde se celebraban las fiestas y las orgías… A raíz de ponerle ese nombre a nuestro sello, la gente empezó a llamarnos Los Suruba, fue un proceso orgánico ya que fue el público quien nos puso el nombre y no nosotros.

DELMAR: Mi primera vez fue con 19 años en el 1999, ese verano cambio mi vida y supe que algún día viviría aquí :). Luego dejamos de venir un par de años (alrededor de 2005/06) la isla se puso muy de moda, cambió, pero la isla llama y si realmente te gusta después de dos años te mueres por volver a pisarla.

HABLAMOS DEL SELLO, LO QUE HE ENTENDIDO ES QUE LLEVA CUATRO PILARES, QUE SON CUATRO ESTILOS DIFERENTES.

ALVARO: En 2011 vinimos para hacer “Torete” con Edu, estuvimos una semana sin salir haciendo música, se rompió el ordenador y hubo un montón de desastres jajajaj, pero al final salió todo bien. Ese año Edu nos comentó que le gustaría que vinieramos a vivir juntos. Así que alquilamos una casa juntos para la temporada siguiente, tras ese verano, Delmar y yo decidimos quedarnos a vivir aquí.

ALVARO: El sello base es Suruba, tiene el estilo más abierto de todos, hemos publicado casi 80 referencias, 17 de ellas en vinilo… Después creamos Suruba X, que es el más oscuro y personal, en él editamos la música que nos gusta sin preocuparnos en si entrara o no en los tops de ventas, De momento han salido 8 referencias en vinilo y 25 en digital. Luego esta Suruba D, sello que montamos por la cantidad de material que nos llegaba a Suruba y que no podíamos planchar en vinilo, con el tiempo ha ido orientándose más al Indie, Disco y Electro. Por ultimo esta ‘Playa’, es una serie dentro de Suruba con un sonido más orgánico, música para beach clubs, sunsets, mas cálida y elegante.

DELMAR: Mola mucho, esta todo cerca, tienes mas tiempo para tí para reunirte con tus amigos y otros productores para hacer música (hay un montón de estudios increíbles)… Se esta tan agusto que cuando llega el viernes y te tienes que ir para pinchar, te da pena irte…

PRODUCÍS MÚSICA DIFERENTE DE LO QUE PINCHAIS?

LA CONEXIÓN CON ANTS Y CON USHUAÏA, COMO HA NACIDO?

DELMAR: Pues a veces si a veces no, depende porque también pinchamos de forma diferente según los temas nuevos que nos gusten que haya en ese momento en el mercado.

ALVARO: Estabamos en Qatar pinchando y nos escribió un amigo para decirnos que el director de Ushuaïa nos quería conocer, decidimos reunirnos con él con la ilusión de que igual nos quería ofrecer pinchar algún día. Al salir de la primera reunión pensábamos que había una camara oculta o algo porque lo que nos habían ofrecido no nos lo podíamos creer. Nos ofrecieron ser parte importante de Ants como los residentes de la fiesta y además nos dejaron invitar y sugerir artistas. Estamos en el segundo año y pensamos que actualmente es una de las fiestas con mayor repercusión y que más ruido están hacienda dentro y fuera de Ibiza.

ALVARO: Tambien a veces te apetece hacer una cancion más tranquila o más oscura de lo que estas pinchando en este momento, así que siempre hay una variación en ambos campos. HABEIS PRODUCÍDO POR SELLOS LEGENDARIOS COMO NOIR, GET PHYSICAL, CULPRIT Y STIL VOR TALENT, COMO HAN NACIDO ESTAS COLABORACIONES? ALVARO: Noir fue el primer sello importante que publicó música nuestra. A Get Physical mandamos una cancion que hicímos con Edu Imbernon, como no contestaban (habían pasado 3 o 4 meses) decidimos juntarnos con Edu de nuevo para hacer la cara B e intentar mandarlas a otro sello y fue gracioso porque justo ese día nos escribió MANDY y nos dijeron que se quedaban Torete y que si podríamos juntarnos para hacer una cara B! A Culprit mandamos nuestro siguiente trabajo junto a Edu; Fayer que fue premiado como canción del año 2013 en los Vicious Music Awards.

DELMAR: Siempre ha sido mi revista de Ibiza, la que quieres conseguir según aterrizas y tienes en tu baño para leértela entera con calma jej. Cuando era un chaval soñaba con ser uno de los DJ´s a los que entrevistan.. y aquí estoy! Ah! y siempre he querido salir en la página del collage de las cabezas… me encanta!

A must for all lovers of finest electronic floor jewels, made for all those who love to dance the time away.

A double CD in the infamous ‘Get Lost’ series is another proof of that, Crosstown Rebels highly acclaimed collection of jewels. He always takes his time to introduce even the last to this great trip, and all end up moving eternally. Respect.

It seems surprising that Guti is releasing a jazz album in its widest sense, having real 50’s influenced tracks as well as electronically flavoured laid back tracks. He actually comes from this musical corner, so you could rather call it a return to his roots. For Jazz freaks maybe not Jazz enough but for all others a great step into a musical adventure that might bring the one or other closer to this high end musical art.

Following the first release which climbed to number one in the digital sales, headhoncho Kenneth Bagerprooves once more his outstanding skills as a music selector. Tracks from Roisin Murphy, Tuccinelli, Dusty Springfield, Axel Bowman, Gigi Masin, Todd Terje, Zero 7, Lucci Capri, jJvier Bergia,Faze action, Laid Back, Coyote and Hollie Cook make this 2nd edition another sure shot to enjoy a perfect sunset wherever you are.

A true masterpiece.

Future disco presents All-Day Dancing is a very fine collection of jewels made for the new fashion of clubbing, daytime, rooftops, beach clubs, festivals or simply at home with friends. Very emotional, real gems like Ten Wall’s Walking with Elephants meets David August’s Epikur, Few Nolder’s epic track Chall runs before Dark Sky’s Yp and so on. Future Disco host the sunset terrace this year at Space with Carl Cox’ Music is Revolution.

Sönke Düver is the man behind this project, released on Drumpoet community is this another slow mo jewel, typical laid back style with excellent musicians and singers. Something for the slower moments in life, be it a dancefloor, a warm summer evening or any other intimate occasion for soulful beats and melodies.

Compiled and mixed by Julian Ganzer and Javier Logares for Get Physical’s number 13 of the infamous series brings once more ideal music to get the cobwebs out of your booty, artists of the likes of Melo&Kollektiv&Konvex deliver one of my faves on it, so does John Monkman, Aidan Lavelle and many others. To collect all 13 fbw collections is the real challenge as these are sometimes well-hidden.

Franz Ferdinand is the next in the line of duty for the infamous LNT series, and indeed a special one. The quartet manages to create a trip that could best be described as multidimensional, from darkness to light, from dance floor to intimate moments, from Serge Gainsbourg to Ian Dury, from Zapp to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry in their hands it all converts into simple tools to take you out of reality into their very own swing.

High Heels Breaker represents the alter ego of Electronica producer Domenico Ferrari. A true sound innovator, Ferrari used analogue electronics to create the sound textures for his new tracks and blended them with sophisticated beats. Inspired by soul, techno and hip hop, he has developed a unique sound with a futuristic touch.

Number fourteen already in the infamous “Cocoon Compilation’ series, the real vinyl is one of the most seeked-after collector’s boxes so far. A true mastermix containing deep groove-laden techno with an attitude. All but raw, always surprising, very very groovy and seductive, definitely one of the best out of this collection. Go find it wherever you can!

BRYAN KESSLER / NEW YORK, BABY

Luke is one of those pillars in electronic music that always stay true to themselves, his style is unique, honed over the years but always authentic. ‘The Acid Games’ is a hymn on Roland synths’ acid sounds flavoured with trippy vocals saying ‘the rules are there are no rules’. Word. ‘Stop the Riot’ is simple, repetitive therefore utterly addictive. ‘Second Hand Blues’ rounds up the EP with a constant build-up, leaving the listener desperate for more.

Punk renegade, songwriting Wunderkind and all-around exceptional producer Bryan Kessler is a man of many faces, and all of them rock. Here he shows his humoristic yet heavily groovy and funny side with title ‘New York Baby’, whilst ‘Dr. Kessler’ dwelves in rhythms, snares, claps and other tricky elements, hugging you to the deeper floor frenzy. ‘Little fishes, beware: there’s a new shark in the pond.’

JOZIF / RUTKA

Kris Davis injects a fresh take on deepness, moody and dark yet sweet and touching melodies dance over a heavy groove, a great mastering does the rest, out comes a killer. B-side ‘Anti’ is quite different yet leaves the same feel working with broken beats, groovin percussion and great ambiental sounds. Another new talent that is no copy cat but an explorer of new sounds. Great work.

Leftroom is fresh, wild, unpredictable yet always incredibly groovy. Jozif delivers ‘Rutka’, a rough, intriguing groover par excellence. Old School meets new sounds, title ‘Rufka’ develops with every second, ‘Sneak Thief’ is rough and wild plus Hearthrob delivers a most groovy remix of it, and final ‘Afraid of Dee’ is my fave. Phat grooves hugged by trippy basslines, spaced out melodies and indie-like snares and drums.

HOT CITY ORCHESTRA / LA PEÑA # 15 Simon Birkenfield and La Peña head honcho Arno Völker aka ‘Einzelkind’ are ‘Hot City Orchestra’, so release # 15 is an inhouse production. Tribal influences swing through the whole EP, enriched with pulsating synths, bubbling basslines and distorted vocal bits. Cocoon’s Christian Burkhardt delivers a remix of ‘Barimu’, the most floor oriented track of all three with a punchy bass, heavy kicks and subliminal bass tones.

H.O.S.H. / FOREVER YOUNG P.4 Cpt. H.O.S.H. aka Holger is on a cruise to star-spangled floor heaven. Here he is joined by AndHim, cologne-based infectuous duo that grilled us with several heavy releases before, altogether deliver ‘Captain’, a monster that unfolds its power slowly but surely, with great off-melodies, heavy basslines, punchy kickdrum and a solid dose of extasy-drenched melancholy. Somehow reminds me of the vibe of Pachanga Boy’s ‘Time’.

LUCA BACCHETTI / OVO

Need to fly away on any floor? ‘The Tower’ will surely do the job, rising melodies and patterns are backed up by a heavy kick, marching snares and mysterious melodies add spice to the trip down the rabbit hole. ‘To the end of time’ takes things deeper on a subconscious level, you get suck into another world of dark yet sweet melodies, a heavy bass rolls up your spine to culminate hitting your pelvis with just the right kick. Play it LOUD.

Luca Bacchetti releases ‘Ovo’ on his own imprint ‘Endless’ - and the title track directly became one of my faves. A track that has definitely formed in his subconsciousness for quite a time, this is no lucky shot but a serious story that unfolded itself over a period. Recorded in a studio surrounded by nature, out comes epic mature, emotional techno, where ethereal dream-like atmospheres find a singular expression and their own distinct identity.

BAMBOOK / GALOPP

MANTU / WOODEN SHAPE

Kindisch keeps refusing to grow up, Bambook aka Hannes Netzell & Eiad Sayegh already created a buzz on Culprit and now indulge with their new EP full of thick rhythmic bass, rolling piano lines and addictive build ups on the title track while ‘Analogon’ wil tear you apart on the floor armed with a heavy kick, acid flavoured deepest synths and a sub bass to blow your eardrum.

Mantu Overbeck delivers the second release on his own ‘With compliments’ imprint, rolling groover “Wooden Shape’ gets you going slowly but surely, whilst Pele & Stojan deliver the first remix reducing the groove through adding a bit of bubbly madness, second remixer Denis Horvat melts it straight into a hypnotic twirky variation. The original is my fave, direct entry in my preferred track folder.

BUTCH + C. VOGT / THE INFAMOUS

AMBER / KEEP IT GONE

Always different, always surprising, that is what marks Bülent Gürler aka Butch. Together with C. Vogt both present ‘the infamous’ EP and this epic jazzy intro will stay in your forehead for a long time until it finally gets gently and softly underlined by a soft kick drum. Nobody less then Robytek + Shield are on remix duty, taking it straight to the floor from the first kick without dissolving its epic spirit.

Contradictive as the title, Amber delivers a three track EP for Mobilee in true style, ‘Keep it Gone’ is one of those repetitive floor monsters that you wish would never end. “Pentagon’ drives you at 4th gear to peak time whilst ‘One Touch’ is the deeper, trippy cut, and therefore my fave. Love the hypnotic sweetness, typical for Mobilee.

As cool as one can be, System 2 deliver a killer groover, the title track is as dry as it gets, the vocal makes you dribble, sweet slow deep house grooves do the rest. The remix from John Dimas shfts a few gears up, clearly floor oriented with only a few vocal bits left, and ‘This is us’ is classic rave-style broken beats meet 4 2 the floor, a tweeky hi hat introduces a heavy bass underlined with vocal stripes.

The original Chic singers, Kathy Sledge and the Aristofreeks team up to deliver a brandnew Disco anthem dressed up in modern beats but with all ingredients lovers of Disco adore. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Disco Demolition Night that tried to mark the end of Disco but marked the beginning of modern Dance music they hit the market with this bomb. Watch out!

RAW DISTRICT / RAGGED STAR

CHAIM / UNDERWATER

The ‘Ragged Star EP’ featuring live vocalists Ellipsis and Giorgia Angiuli is two compelling original cuts combining hypnotic, swinging grooves in the languidly deep Detroitlaced ‘Ragged Star’ and contrasting textures and tempos and ethereal voice in ‘Turn Away’. Throw in stone cold killer tech ‘Rethinks’ by house music demigod Josh Wink and you have more than enough bangers for your buck.

Fusing solid bass heavy grooves, clearly inspired by his love for those classic jacking Chicago jams, hypnotic synth hooks, trademark affected percussion, live instrumentation and vocal snippets, Chaim’s unique and organic sound always makes an impact. A fantastic tool for the early or very late hours for those who know how to cook ‘em slowly but surely.

THE YOUNG GENTLEMAN’S ADVENTURE SOCIETY / ADVENTURE PARTY

SKENA / THE NEXT ACT

‘T.Y.G.A.S.’ meet once a month in a warehouse to discuss boxing, buggery and the rediscovery of Conan Doyle’s Lost World, and ‘Parada 88’ vanished into Disco Heaven leaving only one trace. Both producer teams are channelled on one release on International Feel, and we have to thenk the label to re-release both jewels. Sure to hit once more after their first appearance in 2011.

Steyoyoke is one of my faves anyway, now they launch ‘Steyoyoke Black’, showcasing the darker, slightly more techno driven side of their musical universe. Skena is a young italian new duo on the block, delivering most intense, beat driven deep tech house with insane soundscapes that seem to appear from nowhere. Very promising. Very very.

JONAS SAALBACH / LOST

Inside Out records present this young French, delivering an intensity rarely found today, ambiental darkness meets strings of hope, transcend into tribal frenzies only to dive back to deepest shades of techno. My fave is him and Philip Piogé’s Fantom Menace, more a symphony than just a track, always surprising, percussion-embraced beats trap you within its industrial sounding walls.

ALL IS WELL / HOPE ALL IS WELL An anonymous revered veteran stands behind “AIW”, wanting to get rid of expectations and style barriers, starting from scratch delivering one of my favourite early-hour-track with ‘Vabene’. Hypnotic, super groovy and sweet melodic deep house, whilst ‘La Valse de la Pertinence’ shifts up 1 2 gears in grooviness, melodies and arrangement. ‘Hope All Is Well’ is the peak of all three, looping it forever is the least you wanna do.

SOLOMUN / FRIENDS 2DIY4 is a sublabel from Diynamic, and Headhoncho Solomun delivers another one-track-EP for it. Typical Solomun-style, intriguing happiness unfolding your soul, booty-shaking kicks and basslines embrace hypnotic melodies, wobbly sounds telling fairytales swirl around as it all leads you to want more of it. Nine minutes seem just for this track, which is a very good sign.

SOUL BUTTON + TALUL / CHASING THOUGHTS Steyoyoke is on e of my favourite imprints, always delivering first class, highly emotional music as is this one. Title track ‘Chasing Thoughts’ is a kind of disco-ish atmospheric tech house monster, the remixes come from Tony Sasanova, converting it into an epic first class floorgriller whilst Sasch brings out the funk in it. All three are perfect tools in wise hands.

FUR COAT / U TURN Dunno if the title is program but on this EP venezuelan wonderkinder Fur coat surely take thing a few gears upwards. Fast forward but in their intense, indulging, irresistible way. All tracks sound like you know them from before you were born, go directly into your pelvis and leave you breathless, wanting only one thing - more. Lots more.

TEN WALLS / WALKING WITH ELEPHANTS Mario Basanov aka Ten Walls is a one-of-a-kind producer, whatever he touches becomes magic. This track is a mix of “Gotham’ and some of his former productions, so well produced you swear you heard it before. The only problem i got with it is its length, could he please deliver an extended version? One of THE summer anthems, works where-, when- and whatever the occasion is, just play it loud and you got them all by the balls. 80

THYLADOMID / THE REAL THING Featuring the voice of Mâhfoud, this release shows the full potential of producer Thyladomid. In his early tweities he achieves a depth that is hard to find those days, ‘The Real Thing’ is a soulful, groovy, seductive slow burner that instantly melts its way into your heart. Stimming and Adriatique are on remix duties, the former enriches it with more melodies, the latter takes it straight to the floor. Bravo!

MASSIO / REVERSE - ANYTIME Massio is a DJ made inm Mexico, he started playing in 2006 and can best be classified as soulful deep tech-house, which he proves on this EP. ‘Reverse’ is my fave, with little ingredients set the right way he creates an atmosphere that is hard to resist, building it up just like good sex. Everytime is more sweet, indulging sounds play with your soul. Best played on a great after hour, a warmer warm up or anywhere were people like to lisaten to music.

LARRY CADGE / THE AWAKENING Kling Klong take us on a trip to african borders, tribal beats dance over a solid kick, the vocal derives straight from roots music, and the overall feel is that the party has started. Hermanez is on remix duty, taking it deeper without losing pace. Wonderful melodies drill nito your brain while your feet can not stop and you wonder where the time has gone. Third track ‘Invisible Mothers’ is for all lovers of good solid house music, just the right dose of all, perfectly balanced and a great tool to get a floor on temperature.
