Major win for brilliant Brendan
By Paul Byrne
Louth Village man
Brendan Lawlor is expected to climb to the top of the world rankings following his historic victory at the inaugural G4D open in Woburn, England.
The competition was billed as the first ever Major in the G4D (Golf For the Disabled) tour which was launched in February 2022.
It focusses on inclusivity, making space for every player and aiming to inspire more people with disabilities to pursue golf. The new tour now has a schedule of nine tournaments which run alongside DP World tour events, at the same
course on the same week.
Brendan was born with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, an inherited disorder that results in short stature and short limbs. The talented Louth Village man has been making his mark around the world for several years with high-profile wins on the EDGA tour while showcasing disability golf to a wider audience.
Brendan, who honed his skills as a youngster playing pitch and putt in Channonrock has become one of the very best disability golfers in the world in recent years, collecting victories at the 2021 Cazoo Continued on Page 2

Brendan recovered from three bogeys in a row in his final round to win the inaugural G4D Open title. The Louth Village man fended off the challenge of world number 1 Kipp Popert.

Disability open, 2021 ISPS hANDA World Disability Invitational, 2019 German Disabled open, the 2019 GGolf Knockout and the 2019 EDGA Scottish open.
He also became the first disability golfer to compete in a European Challenge tour event, the ISPS handa World Invitational at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort in 2019. Last weekend he teed it up at Woburn looking to get back on the winning trail having not won a tournament in almost twelve months. the tournament was billed as the very first Major in the G4D
format with 80 players entered including 14 of the top 20 disability golfers in the world.
England’s Kipp Popert went into the tournament as favourite given the fact he has won multiple times this season and was the number one ranked player in the world. however, Brendan played beautifully on the first day carding a brilliant 70 to take an early lead in the tournament. Day two saw Brendan once again play fantastically from tee to green but an uncooperative putter meant he signed for a 74 thus taking just a one shot lead ahead of
world number 1 Popert into the final day.
That final day couldn’t have started much worse for Lawlor, with the 26-year old starting his round with three straight bogeys but despite going two shots down to the world number 1, Lawlor regained his poise superbly making a number of clutch putts throughout his round to regain the lead and eventually win the tournament by two strokes from Popert. Following his win Brendan celebrated with Dad Billy who is also his caddie and the pair returned to Louth Village on Saturday where delighted friends and family
toasted Brendan’s success.
“We got home on Saturday morning and my girlfriend Rebecca had organised a night in town to celebrate the victory and we all had a brilliant night. It was a great feeling to have my name on the trophy and become the first ever Major winner in our sport and I’m proud of how I coped with the pressure on the final day. I started the final round badly with three straight bogeys and at that stage I just decided to open up my shoulders a bit and just go for it. Kipp is a very steady player but he was feeling the pressure down the stretch and he went way right
at the final hole while I drove it straight down the middle. It’s been a while since I last won so it felt extra special to get it done at Woburn. I have been working very hard on my game and it’s nice to get the rewards. It’s great to see our tournaments get so much coverage and it really is turning into a mainstream sport now. I know Sky gave the tournament great coverage and they are showing highlights of the action this week. Next up for me is the Scandinavian Mixed tournament in Sweden but first I will chill out at home for a couple of days and enjoy this special victory,” stated Brendan.
Mickey urges Louth not to lose ‘Harte’
By Paul Byrne
Louth manager Mickey harte urged his players to dust themselves down and get ready for the next challenge following his side’s chastening defeat at the hands of Dublin in the Leinster Senior Football final in Croke Park last Sunday. Dublin retained their title thanks to a 5-21 to 1-15 point victory over the Wee County.
After a promising start for Louth with Sam Mulroy looking lively early on, Dublin reeled off 1-10 without reply between the 15th and 32nd minutes to put the game beyond Louth. Dublin led 1-12 to 0-6 at half-time and extended that lead in the second half as they scored four unanswered goals to seal an emphatic victory.
Louth now go into the Sam Maguire Cup Group 1 with Mayo, Kerry and Cork with a game against the Rebel county first on the list in Pairc tailteann in Navan the weekend after next. harte alongside his assistant Gavin Devlin must now lift his troops ahead of that crunch game. Speaking after the match Mickey harte said work needs to be done now to restore credibil-

ity after the heavy defeat to Dublin.
“It’s a lesson we have to learn. It’s a harsh lesson today but you just have to hold your hands up.
I’ve always consid-
ered that it’s very easy to look back on a video tape when the game is over and be wonderfully smart. there’s lots of people can do that. It’s not that easy when you’re standing on the
line having to deal with it. So, you do what you think is good.
“I’ve been in places before where we got a very poor outcome. It’s not the end of the world.
It’s another process of
what can you learn from that, how can you adjust it and fix it.
“We haven’t much time because the group that we’re in now doesn’t really possess second rate teams either so we
have a lot of thinking to do, a lot of preparation to do to try and grab back some credibility of having the right to be in this level of the Championship,” stated harte.

Fitzpatrick urges Minister to secure more foreign investment to Dundalk
INDEPENDENt tD Peter Fitzpatrick has urged the Minister of Enterprise, trade and Employment, Neale Richmond, to seek briefings from IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland to actively secure foreign and indigenous direct investment across Louth. County Louth is currently home to 36 IDA Ireland client companies directly employing 4,485 people but with job losses at both National Pen and PayPal in recent months Deputy Fitzpatrick wants the government to do more to attract investment in Louth.
“this question is to ask the Minister for Enterprise, trade and Employment if he will seek briefings from IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland on the work that they are currently undertaking to actively secure foreign and indigenous direct investment in areas in County Louth, such as at a complex in Dundalk regarding which details have been supplied, and if he will make a statement on the matter.
In response the Minister pointed to the fact that IDA Ireland had acquired two land banks in Co. Louth last year with a combined total of 157 acres which will be used to attract foreign investment.
“the timely provision of appropriate, cost-effective property and infrastructure solutions to meet the needs of multinational companies remains essential to winning FDI,” stated Minister Richmond.
“In June 2021, IDA Ireland acquired two land banks in County Louth. these land acquisitions, with a combined total of 157 acres, are situated in Drogheda and Dundalk and form part of the IDA’s long-term strategic plan to position Louth and the wider
Peter Fitzpatrick
region to compete for FDI investment. the IDA has also delivered an advanced office solution on IDA’s Finnabair Business Park and an advanced business solution building at IDA’s Mullaharlin science and technology park in Dundalk. the agency also plans to commence the delivery of an advanced building solution in Drogheda as part of the current strategy.
“the IDA continues to work with private sector commercial property owners, developers and local authorities to market other property solutions across all regions where they exist. the IDA is familiar with the property and infrastructure solution that the Xerox business campus offers to potential new enterprises and actively markets such potential property solutions for FDI and to meet the needs of Enterprise Ireland clients.
“I was in Dundalk a couple of weeks ago with one of the Deputy’s colleagues. there are some amazing business opportunities happening in the town in terms of new indigenous business and making the most of the Creative Spark hub, but there is also huge investment coming in
from abroad. It is fair to say the town is thriving, but we remain ambitious for Dundalk and the entire region,” stated Minister Richmond.
Replying to the Minister Deputy Fitzpatrick pointed to an increase last year in the number of early warning reports for FDI companies which may be experiencing trading difficulties.
“the Department saw an increase last year in the number of early warning reports for FDI companies which may be experiencing trading difficulties or are ceasing operations in Ireland. the number of early warning reports for the first 11 months of 2022 is higher than the same period in 2021. We saw this in County Louth, with the exit of National Pen and the closure of PayPal and Actavis in recent years.
“there are currently a number of significant players being impacted by global trading conditions and the war in ukraine. At a national level, the IDA strategy, Driving Recovery and Sustainable Growth 2021-2024, reflects the approach and ambition of the programme for Government whereby, in conjunction with the Department of Enterprise, trade and Employment, the success of the IDA is measured by the impact of FDI on the Irish economy.
“In terms of job creation and strategic achievements, the closure of the PayPal office in the Xerox complex and the empty state-of-the-art buildings on the Actavis and National Pen sites offer an opportunity for the IDA, the Department of Enterprise, trade and Employment and Enterprise Ireland to attract new businesses and jobs to County Louth,” concluded Fitzpatrick.
Relaunch of Dundalk townwatch Scheme
DunDaLk BIDS and members of the Dundalk Townwatch Scheme met with Superintendent Charlie armstrong and Garda Darragh Prior, on Wednesday 10th of May to relaunch the initiative within the retail and business community in the town centre. The main objective was to reconnect with everyone and to hear how we can restart and work together to identify and address issues that the businesses are facing, and to discuss, in particular, the impact on local retailers suffering sustained loss through frequent shoplifting, aggressive begging, criminal damage and intimidation.
The relaunch of the scheme’s Radio network is an important step towards improving security and safety in the town centre’s business district. It is encouraging to see local Garda representatives taking an active interest in reconnecting with the community and working together to solve the ongoing issues.
Sean Farrell Chairperson of Dundalk Townwatch commented “This is a welcome commitment from the Garda and one which everyone needs to make full use off to ensure it becomes permanent.”
Town Center Manager, Martin Mc Elligott, said “It is essen-
tial that all offences are reported to Gardaí immediately to include drunkenness/ nuisance/ begging / shoplifting / robbery etc. We cannot hope to improve our town image and trading conditions, nor influence the provision of either uniform policing or patrol vehicles, if the data collated by the Garda Pulse system is inaccurate.”
Local Garda need to know what is happening on the street if they are to be effective in dealing with criminal activity. all business owners in the Dundalk area are encouraged to report any antisocial behaviour directly to an Garda on 999.

Councillor Tomás Sharkey concerned at delay in n53 Bord Pleanála decision
CouNtY Councillor tomás Sharkey has expressed his concern at the delay in a decision on the N53 Rassan to hackballscross scheme.
“this stretch of the Castleblayney Road is the last piece of the jigsaw to upgrade a dangerous and busy road from Dundalk to the Armagh border. I have been raising this matter since 2003 and am anxious that we complete the final phase.
“A number of residents and landowners made observations on the proposed route. It then went to an oral hearing of An Bord Pleanála. that hearing was in January 2023 but the board has not issued its decision yet.
“this delay puts the project in danger. Council staff and elected
members have worked hard to ensure transport Infrastructure Ireland keeps the project in its spending plans. But a delay in the decision means costs
may have to be revised.
“I hope that An Bord Pleanála issues their decision quickly so we can all see this important project finished. In the meantime, we have a job to do to ensure authorities in the north reciprocate our work in the southern end of the road. the N53 travels through county Armagh on its way to Monaghan. that part of the road now needs to be placed high on the agenda for politicians in Stormont.”
In response to Cllr. Sharkey’s concerns Louth County Council said that they were still awaiting the outcome of a hearing from An Bord Pleanála.
“the oral hearing was held by An Bord Pleanála (ABP) regarding the CPo process on the 10th of January. LCC still awaits the outcome of
this hearing from ABP. the inspector’s report has been completed and is currently awaiting the Board decision. In order to progress a decision on the CPo, LCC have written to ABP stressing that the route has an high accident rate, the funding commitments from tII, anxious of landowners and LCC to have a decision on the CPo order. In the mean time the design team continues to engage with the landowners, their agents and other stakeholders. A technical acceptance report has been prepared for structures and submission to tII. Ground Investigations tender and archaeological test trenching package is currently being prepared for field work and testing,” concluded the statement.

CuChuLAINN Cycl-ing Club were keenly following the progress of three of its members, Jacinta Black, Kevin Black and Jim Doyle, as they took on the grueling 225km distance event at the Mallorca 312 recently. this endurance event has become extremely popular in recent years and attracts upwards of 8000 participants across its three different distances (312km/ 225km/167km). the 225km crosses the northern part of the island and includes almost 4000m of climbing. To put that in perspective that is the equivalent cycling up 7 Slieve Foyes stacked on top of each other. to make matters worse there are cut-off times that participants must stay within along the route or they will be eliminated.
thankfully all three managed to complete the distance in excellent fashion. Jim Doyle was first of our intrepid trio home in 10hrs and 52 secs finishing 561th in the male category. Kevin’s time was 10hrs, 17mins and 41 secs finishing 878th in the Masculino category and Jacinta completed the event in 11hrs, 9mins and 23 secs and was the 125th female finisher.
CuChulainn’s Couch to 50km. CuChulainn has also been busy with its couch to 50km programme over the past few weeks, which is aimed at encouraging individuals to join the growing ranks of leisure cyclists and take on a challenge of preparing for and completing their first 50km distance. A comprehensive programme it covers safety aspects of cycling solo or in groups, basic bike checks and road side repairs in a fun environment. It is a programme that leisure club members love to support and many join the weekly spins perhaps reliving their own recent experiences of taking up cycling as an adult. the culmination of the couch to 50 programme is the 50km route of the club’s annual tour of Louth event on the 4th June.

“Without the walkers and people who donate the event couldn’t happen. Everyone had smiles on their faces and got into the spirit of things.”

O, St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. Our Father and three Hail Mary’s, and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. The miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.D.
