The new year is right around the corner and instead of waxing poetic about the past, it has me wanting to talk about the future. If you haven’t noticed, it’s arrived. Electrification and automation are turning the automotive industry upside down and giving it a vigorous shake. The high-end market, though, is where the best innovation is reaching consumer hands, and that’s our sandbox This month’s cover car reflects that. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is the climactic electric model from the pinnacle sub-brand of an apex automaker. It’s what you get when no expense is spared marrying innovation, luxury, and exclusivity. From the Hyperscreen that spans A-pillar to A-pillar to the trademark two-tone paint and monobloc wheels to the onboard silver-plated champagne flutes, the Maybach EQS is unique in its lavishness. It’s also blessed with more power than the standard EQS: 649 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque from twin motors and a total range of over 300 miles. A worthy cover model indeed that we spend more time talking about on page 12. On a different end of the spectrum is our first taste of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray (page 24), which has divided the Corvette faithful more than the switch from pop-up headlights to fixed. Not only does the E-Ray introduce electrification to the platform in the form of a traditional hybrid setup, it ipso facto adds all-wheel drive due to the electric propulsion living entirely on the front axle. If you’re screaming “Heresy!”, we suggest you sit in one while it takes the mighty Z06 in the quarter mile. (They’re actually very close, but the E-Ray looks a lot faster doing it.) In addition to these two electric iconoclasts, we have many more new models reaching showrooms in 2024. Before the ball drops, check out our guide on what new cars are coming in 2024 on page 48. Again, it’s another year of the future being pulled forward with automakers adopting and evolving electrification in every way, shape, and form. To be honest, I lied about not wanting to reflect on the past, at least in regards to one car: the Audi TT. This year is the last one for the little convertible we all love, so we’re taking one last ride in the latest and last TT on page 34. On sale continuously since 1998, the tiny Bauhaus roadster deserves so much credit for proving Audi had a sense of style. Sharing much of its parts with the Volkswagen Golf, the TT is also the best example of badge engineering that we’ve ever seen. With New Years comes Christmas (and Hannakah and Kwanzaa and Festivus), and we wouldn’t let you go without presenting our incredible holiday gift guide for the well-heeled and generous (page 74).We’ve gone out of our way to include gifts for a wide variety of interests and hobbies, so there’s something for everyone. We ourselves, the duPont REGISTRY family, have experienced a lot of change this year and are looking forward to new opportunities in 2024. I’m standing in the middle of a massive hangar at a small airport just south of Denver, Colorado. Colorful single-engine propeller planes sit scattered within the towering space. The glossy white floors reflect the afternoon sun. To my right is a Stingray, and to my left, a Z06, with a row of E-Rays lined up in the fresh air on the other side of the enormous doors. The entire Corvette fleet is here. And before I even set foot in the new E-Ray, I’m wondering where this model fits. The Stingray has already proven itself to be a formidable sports car at the entry level,while the Z06 rises above it as a pricier supercar fighter.Who, then, is the E-Ray for? Ask Tadge Juechter, Corvette’s executive chief engineer, and he’ll tell you the E-Ray customer doesn’t save their sports car for special occasions, nor do they chase lap times at a track. They’re the kinds of people who want a year-round one-car solution that’s appropriately sporty but usable. The E-Ray’s electric motor is there purely for performance, not efficiency.Although it allows for all-electric cruising up to 5 miles with a 45 mph top speed, its primary goal is to produce power and provide greater traction.As such, the E-Ray’s fuel economy ratings match the Stingray’s. Its primary power source is the same 6.2-liter naturally aspirated LT2 V8 that drives the Stingray, developing 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. With a new 160-horsepower electric motor up front, it delivers a total system output of 655 horsepower. The E-Ray rips to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, making it the quickest Vette ever, beating out the Z06 by a tenth of a second. And while it’ll run the quarter mile

••• The E-Ray’s sculpted exterior gives way to a racy interior. Wrapped in leather and equipped with a smart command center, it takes its cues from the stylings of a fighter jet.

in 10.5 seconds, its top speed is no faster than a Stingray’s due to its electric motor disengaging past 150 mph. I grabbed the keys to a Cacti Green convertible and set off, quickly leaving the large hangar behind in search of twisty mountain roads. It took two bends for the E-Ray to show its strengths. It bursts out of corners in a way the Stingray could only dream of — and its relentless acceleration isn’t the most impressive feature. The front end is tremendously grippy, inspiring you to push it harder. It begs you to enter each corner slightly quicker than the last, confident you’ll never run out of grip. Unlike the Z06, the E-Ray doesn’t have endless revs. It tops out at a much lower 6,600 rpm. Its eight-speed dual-clutch auto and closely spaced gears offer solid low-end torque, while its front motor backs it up with instant power.And despite the absence of a mechanical connection, the two power sources blend seamlessly. Thanks to softer spring rates, the E-Ray is compliant, even in its firmest setting, easily handling bumpy road surfaces.Although far from talkative, its steering is well-weighted and direct, allowing you to point the E-Ray’s front end exactly where you want it to go. With standard carbon-ceramic brakes, this Vette never runs out of braking performance regardless of how hard it’s pushed. The E-Ray positions itself neatly between the Stingray and Z06 as a sports car that offers supercar fighting performance on request while remaining perfectly comfortable, practical, and usable for daily life. It achieves what it sets out to do: provide a one-car year-round solution. And although it may not look as classically elegant as its Porsche or Mercedes-AMG counterparts, its blend of performance and usability is extraordinary. DECEMBER 2023

FADING ATTRACTION

Changing customer demands have put the damper on small cars like the TT.

The Audi TT started as a design study penned in Southern California. Freeman Thomas and J Mays, designers based at Volkswagen of America’s Simi Valley Design Center, created the initial sketches in early 1994, naming it the Bauhaus Coupe. A year later, the TT, whose name draws inspiration from the Tourist Trophy races held on the Isle of Man, appeared in concept form at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Spectators fell instantly for its simple but sleek design, and sensing sizable demand for it, Audi greenlit the coupe for production in December 1995. The automaker was going through a significant transition, revamping its portfolio and working to cement itself as a premium brand. So as the world caught its first glimpse of the two-seater, the TT didn’t just have to sell. Its mission was to attract new customers to the brand, serving as Ingolstadt’s halo car for the late ’90s. The TT formally went on sale in 1998, with its Roadster variant following shortly thereafter — they sold in massive numbers. As the TT moved into its second generation in 2006, it grew larger and more potent with subsequent TTS and TT RS variants and got a stablemate in the form of the R8. Though the supercar debuted with unique styling, its design language can be traced directly to the tiny TT. By this point, the impact of its simple but stylish design was undeniable. AUDI

Although sales remained strong after the second-gen TT’s introduction, the 2010s and the global recession that accompanied them were troublesome. Sales in the United States shrunk, and despite the TTS and TT RS holding their own as serious sports cars in period comparison tests, sales figures took nearly half a decade to recover. The TT’s third and final generation, simply known as the Mk3, arrived in 2014. Based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the little sports car benefited from significant performance improvements, as did other VW products of the time. Still, its sales figures never recovered; thus far, in 2023, only a few hundred cars have sold. As I made my way through the twisty canyons above Malibu in a 2023 TT Roadster, I couldn’t help but feel bummed that the TT didn’t sell as well as it should have. I mean, it has all

the goods on paper. It’s small, relatively light, fun to drive, and gorgeous. So what gives? The answer, of course, is complex. We could blame the popularity of SUVs in the last decade, but small, fizzy cars are down across the board. Such specialized machines seem more challenging than ever to justify as consumers demand their vehicles to do more. The trend isn’t to have multiple cars but one that can do everything. While it didn’t define itself by its handling or straightline performance, the impact of its design philosophy is immeasurable, namely how it surfaced across Audi’s portfolio in cars like the R8 or even in futuristic concept form on the big screen in Will Smith’s I, Robot. While its future is uncertain at this point, one thing is for sure: We’ll miss it once it’s gone.

In only three years, this century’s Roaring ’20s has already proved to be one of the most exciting decades in the automotive world, despite adversities including a pandemic and the ensuing supply chain issues that slowed the entire world down. As we head into 2024, we realize we’ve only just begun to see what this decade has to offer automotive history. The 2020s mark an important turning point in the automotive world, as the industry transitions towards electrification, and manufacturers lay out decadelong plans as to how it’s going to happen. As 2023 comes to a close, and the middle of the decade approaches, those efforts are beginning to ramp up in pace. But the industry isn’t ready to let go of combustion engines just yet — 2024 has hybrids and combustion-powered cars in store, as well. Regardless of what manufacturers or kinds of cars you’re anticipating, there are certainly plenty of thrills to come. Porsche is one of the most popular purveyors of performance luxury cars, and its SUV models — the Cayenne and Macan — are leading the charge.As Porsche transforms its lineup, a new electric version

of the Macan is set to be revealed in 2024. It will sit alongside the Taycan as Porsche’s second fully electric model. Automakers that came on the scene as electric vehicle manufacturers are also seizing the opportunity to expand their lineups and further cement themselves in the highly competitive EV arena. Lucid and Polestar are two of the most prominent examples. Next year, Lucid is set to reveal its Gravity SUV, the first SUV in the brand’s lineup, and Polestar will reveal the Polestar 5, its performance-oriented four-door GT that has been hinted at in the brand’s Precept concept car. Meanwhile, Maserati has revealed the GranTurismo, along with the firstever GranTurismo Folgore electric version. The Italian marque is also on the cusp of introducing a new version of the GranCabrio, with photos of the prototype version of its upcoming opentop grand tourer published and Trident fans anticipating its arrival. Other grand touring models set to be revealed come from Bentley, as the brand has promised hybrid versions of all of its models by 2024, with only the hybrid Continental GT and GTC remaining. This coincides with the bittersweet end of production for Bentley’s iconic W12 engine in April 2024. In the supercar realm, tides are changing too, as anticipation and speculation builds for the latest from brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. As Lamborghini revealed its first production hybrid, the Revuelto, this year, spy shots have suggested that more are coming soon, like possible hybrid versions of the Lamborghini Huracán and Urus. The Prancing Horse is also busy, with rumors swirling about a successor to the legendary LaFerrari hybrid hypercar. With Bugatti under new ownership with the Bugatti Rimac group, a successor to the unfathomable Chiron could be on the horizon. As an industry that continues to drive forward at breakneck speed, there’s no telling what the automotive world will look like in the future, which is exactly what makes coming into 2024 such an exciting prospect.
