O -road supercars are now a thing. Does their existence mean we’re approaching the end times, or will the term “crossover” come to represent the coolest combinations of vehicle types that o -kilter engineers can think of? Don’t look now, but we think it’s the latter.

In fact, this month’s cover features what may be the first ever crossover: the all-new Lamborghini Sterrato (page 12). Part Huracán and part WRC rally car, the Sterrato literally elevates Lamborghini’s supercar game — by 1.7 inches. It also features o -road tires, a Rally driving mode for low-trip surfaces, and a V12 engine making 602 horsepower. In fact, Lamborghini has confirmed the Sterrato is its last pure-combustion car.

Hot on the Sterrato’s heels is the new Porsche 911 Dakar (page 22), an homage to the brand’s 1984 Paris-Dakar rally win. While less powerful than the Lamborghini with only 473 horsepower, the 911 Dakar sits even higher o terra firma with an adjustable suspension that adds up to 3.2 inches of ground clearance. It also features two separate o -road driving modes, an optional rooftop tent and cargo rack, and a special commemorative paint job that takes 34 hours to complete.

Speaking of paint, there is perhaps no color more recognizable in all of autodom than Ferrari’s Rosso Corsa (page 32). Reserved exclusively for cars from Italy and used primarily by Ferrari and Abarth, its name literally means “Racing Red.” Though not the only shade of crimson that can be found on Ferraris over the years, Rosso Corsa is certainly the most iconic.

This story begins in June 2019 with the unveiling of the Sterrato Concept. When first revealed, the unique concept car seemed too outlandish for Lamborghini to give a production run. While it resembled a Huracán, it was the vehicle’s tailored off-road attachments that seemed unheard of for a supercar. Did that mean the world didn’t want to see the Huracán Sterrato come to life? No. Did that stop Lamborghini from making what appeared implausible actually happen? Absolutely not

Lamborghini formally introduced the Huracán Sterrato as a full-fledged production car in November 2022.

Designed for all environments, the new Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato does not shy away from dirt roads. In fact, this beast shows its true brilliance when traversing roads never before seen by previous Huracán models. To equip the Sterrato with capabilities that defy preconceived notions of Italian supercars, the automaker has equipped the model with a bevy of components and upgrades.

The most prominent alteration of the Huracán Sterrato is undoubtedly its appearance. Looking ready for a rally, this new Lamborghini’s

exterior exudes an adventurous aura. The additional ground clearance (44 millimeters) and wider track widths lay the foundation that paves the way for 19-inch wheels wrapped in custom-engineered Bridgestone Dueler AT002 tires. Behind these wheels are aluminum fixed monoblock calipers and carbon-ceramic discs.

Upfront, the Huracán Sterrato benefits from additional LED lights found on both sides of the Raging Bull’s badge. For protection, Lamborghini installed an aluminum underbody component, as well as reinforced sills and new wheel arches along the sides. Up top and on the rear hood is an air intake system that not only adds to the aggressive appearance but also aids in the engine’s search for clean air.

Speaking of the engine, this oroad Lamborghini’s powerplant is none other than the automaker’s well-known 5.2-liter V10 engine. Supplying 602 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, this engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.Also hooked up to the engine is an all-wheel-drive system and rear mechanical self-locking differential. Lamborghini notes that this powertrain will launch the Huracán Sterrato from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and to a top speed of 160 mph.

Managing the engine is a version of the Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics (LDVI) system that’s been updated specifically for the Sterrato’s o -road nature. The STRADA and SPORT modes of the LDVI system have been recalibrated for this model, and a new RALLY

mode has been added. This mode allows the Lamborghini to excel in low-grip conditions, just like a rally car should.

New and exclusive Alcantara Verde Sterrato upholstery graces the cabin interior. Lamborghini designed the new upholstery to allow the driver to “feel like a pilot” as they fly across dirt roads. Adding to this sensation is the inclusion of a digital inclinometer with a pitch and roll indicator, a compass, a geographic coordinate indicator, and a steering angle indicator found within the Human Machine Interface.

While Lamborghini may not be known for making rally cars or oroad-ready supercars, they sure have shown that they know how to. The new Huracán Sterrato — which will have a limited run of 1,499 units with production commencing this month — celebrates Lamborghini’s capabilities and just how far the marque is ready to push boundaries.

As with every Lamborghini design, details drive the eye to each area of the vehicle. Inside, exclusive Alcantara Verde Sterrato upholstery adds comfort for drivers as they blast across uneven surfaces.

Porsche reveals an all-wheel-drive 911 that harks back to the 1980s.

Drawing inspiration from the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally and the first 911 ever to count on an all-wheel-drive system, the 2023 Porsche 911 Dakar aims to allow its owners to explore more than just race tracks and twisty roads.

The factory-built o -roading sports car counts on the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine found in the 911 GTS. It develops 473 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, which goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK. It’ll rocket to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and continue on to a top speed of 150 mph, which is limited thanks to all-terrain tires. The Dakar also gets rear-axle steering, engine mounts out of the 911 GT3, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control.

Its most significant changes live in the suspension. The Porshe 911 Dakar is 50 millimeters taller than a base Carrera. However, a standard lift system can raise the car by an additional 30 millimeters when needed to achieve a ride height and ramp-over angles similar to that of an SUV. Its tallest mode is only available up to 105 mph, at which point it will return to its standard ride height.

Pirelli developed a new Scorpion All Terrain Plus tire for the Dakar, measuring 245/45 ZR 19 in the front and 295/40 ZR 20 in the rear. These feature reinforced sidewalls and a tread pattern that is 9 millimeters deep. Summer tires are also available, but the all-terrain set is standard.

To make use of its new equipment, the Dakar employs two new drive modes, Rallye and O -Road. A new Rallye Launch Control system is available within those two drive modes and allows up to 20 percent wheel spin.

The 911 Dakar continues to borrow from the GT3 with a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic hood with large air extractors. Out back, it features a fixed-rear spoiler complemented by new flared fenders, rocker panels, and stainless steel elements throughout. Its unique air intakes feature mesh grilles to keep rocks and other small objects out.

Inside, the 911 Dakar comes standard with bucket seats and a rear-seat delete. These feature Race-Tex upholstery with contrasting Shade Green stitching. Porsche also employs lightweight class to keep its weight down, giving this o -roading sports car a curb weight of 3,552 pounds, or about the same as a Carrera4 GTS equipped with PDK.

An optional Rallye Design Package gives the 911 Dakar a twotone White and Gentian Blue Metallic exterior, which pays tribute to the 1984 Dakar-winning car. The Shade Green of the stitching is also available as an exterior color exclusive to the Dakar.

Porsche plans to build just 2,500 units of its high-riding sports car, each with a starting price of $222,000 plus a $1,450 delivery fee. The first customer cars will reach dealerships in spring 2023.

RIDING THE REDLINE

After 75 years, Ferrari has painted the town red. But how?

If you think about a red car, you likely picture a Ferrari, and if you think about a Ferrari, you likely picture a red car. The Italian marque has become synonymous with the color red over decades, and the hue has been central to its history for just as long — even before Ferrari was a company. The story of Rosso Corsa, Ferrari’s legendary red, started over a century ago, when Italy’s o cial motorsport color was formally deemed red after the 1907 Italian Peking to Paris–winning car flaunted red paintwork. From then on, Italian racing adopted red as its o cial color, in the same way that France has used blue and Britain green.

Ferrari’s time under the Alfa Romeo umbrella saw the creation of a great many red racing cars, and when Ferrari finally emerged as its own brand with the release of the 125S, Rosso Corsa remained the most readily visible color in its portfolio. Eventually, other automakers found other colors to use in motorsport and to represent their brands; but because Ferrari’s roots run deep in Italian motorsport, the Prancing Horse elected to continue showing its true colors and carry on the heritage of Rosso Corsa. Along with it, Ferrari became synonymous with the history and glory of Italian racing and the performance and style of the country’s best cars.

Today, Rosso Corsa (Italian for “racing red”) remains Ferrari’s most popular red, although other shades like Rosso Dino, Rosso Fiorano, and Rosso Scuderia are available. The entire palette of reds echoes the legacy of Rosso Corsa and tells the story of how the company’s red cars captured the hearts of the entire automotive world to make everlasting history. By the early 1990s, Ferrari says that 85 percent of cars built were finished in red, and while that’s changed with things like Ferrari’s Tailor Made program

and the simple addition of more colors and models for more varied driving situations and customer bases, red still accounts for around half of Ferrari’s orders, according to the brand. At the very beginning of that all is Rosso Corsa.

Seventy-five years into Ferrari’s history, Rosso Corsa is still one of the most important shades of red — let alone colors — to the Ferrari brand. BMW’s yearly Test Fest event in Palm Springs is one of the few times automotive outlets can sample the brand’s latest products back-to-back. This year, I chose to spend my day in the ultra-limited BMW M4 CSL and the all-new electrified flagship, the i7.

1. BMW M4 CSL

As soon as it became available, I made a beeline for the 2023 BMW M4 CSL. The CSL su x, which stands for Coupe, Sport, and Lightweight, indicates that this is the lightest and most athletic M4 yet. With a production run of only 1,000 units worldwide, it is the rarest CSL the brand has ever produced and likely a car I’ll never see in the flesh again.

Thanks to its extensive use of carbon fiber–reinforced plastic throughout the exterior and interior, the CSL shed around 240 pounds compared to the M4 Competition, tipping the scales at 3,640 pounds. It counts on the same twinturbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine as the M4 Competition, but thanks to higher boost figures, the CSL develops 543 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

On the road, these changes feel substantial. Thanks to its retuned engine and significant weight savings, the CSL feels agile and on edge. From the throttle to the steering inputs, this track-ready sports car rewards good behavior and punishes ham-fisted maneuvers. In exchange for this heightened concentration level, you get one of the most exciting and capable M cars of the last decade.

With a starting price of $140,895 and 1,000 units planned for production, it is a fantastic product most will never experience.

2. BMW i7

At this point, electric cars are less an “if” and more a “when.” And while many manufacturers style their battery-powered machines to look like aero-focused eggs, BMW has opted for a di erent path. Instead, the automaker has given its latest electric flagship a more traditional sedan look.

From a glance, it’s almost impossible to discern that the i7 is electric. Upfront, it sports a long hood, upright proportions, and an enormous grille. However, while it may look like a standard 7 Series, this model is far from it.

In the floor lives a 101.7 kWh battery pack, which translates to up to 300 miles of range. It’ll charge up to 195 kW, adding around 80 miles in 10 minutes. This amounts to a power output of 536 horsepower and 549 poundfeet of torque, resulting in a dash to 60 mph at around 4.5 seconds and a 149 mph top speed.

The i7 edges out its gas-powered sibling with its silence on the road. Even through morning rush hour in Palm Springs, the i7 delivered the quietness and comfort one might expect from a name like Rolls-Royce. Inside, its updated materials, layout, and tech make this latest flagship feel like a proper six-figure sedan. However, with a car this comfortable and a folding 8K touchscreen in the rear with every streaming service imaginable, this is the first 7 Series I’d prefer to ride in than drive.

NYCK DE VRIES AlphaTauri

Hailing from the Netherlands, Nyck de Vries replaces Pierre Gasly at Scuderia AlphaTauri this season. De Vries had already seen some action on the Formula 1 grid, having replaced Alex Albon at Williams for the Italian Grand Prix in 2022. It was an impressive showing: De Vries placed ninth and actually scored points for the team.

OSCAR PIASTRI McLaren

Oscar Piastri’s entry into Formula 1 was surely interesting. In 2022, Alpine reported that Piastri would replace Fernando Alonso in 2023. This was apparently news to Piastri, as he noted that he had not signed a contract.

After a hearing with the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board, Piastri was free to sign with any team and ultimately landed with McLaren, where he takes fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo’s seat.

It seems the United States’ hype for Formula 1 is growing, and Logan Sargeant’s position on the Williams Racing team furthers this sentiment.
