It has never been easier in the modern era to clap along with the drumbeat of American automobile exceptionalism. Forget the 1980s and ’90s, when our OEMs were running cars through Xerox machines. Today, America makes electric cars that are unbeatable at the dragstrip. We make supertrucks that fly and SUVs that crawl out of craters. And we have the best performance bargain in the world — the Chevrolet Corvette. That’s why, in celebration of Americana, we had to have the newest variant on our cover. While the base Corvette Stingray went exotic on us with the debut of the platform’s midengine layout, the new Corvette Z06 takes another giant leap with the introduction of an actual race engine for the street — an all-aluminum, free-breathing 5.5-liter V8 with a dry sump, flat-plate crankshaft, and screeching 8,600 rpm redline. A cover is the least we could do to celebrate this car’s existence, which you can learn more about on page 14. Another American midengine supercar, the Ford GT, is still alive, and it’s kicking like a pack mule on meth. The latest version in a line of many special editions is the Holman Moody Heritage Edition, which honors the man who placed third in the automaker’s famous 1-2-3 sweep at Le Mans in 1966 where the original car debuted. On page 27, we look back at the amazing history of America’s Ferrari-killing supercar. Let’s move on to innovation. Tesla has been leading the charge for us Yanks, but on page 24, let us tell you what Texas-based Hennessey Performance Engineering has planned. The boutique automaker is working on a six-wheel electric supercar that seats four in a 1-2-1 configuration. It’s called Project Deep Space, and it’s wild. Speaking of electric vehicles, America is dominating that segment too, particularly trucks. On page 36, we present our first driving impressions of the GMC Hummer EV. Subtle, it is not. When Chevrolet pulled back the curtains on the highly anticipated C8 Corvette, many were already speculating on a Z06 version. What engine would it have? How would Chevrolet give the Z06 a new look to make it stand out? Those questions, along with many others, proliferated — namely among fans of the iconic American model. It took two years after the unveiling of the C8 for those questions to be answered, but the wait was more than worth it. With the new C8 Corvette Z06, Chevrolet has created a true American supercar that will be cherished and driven to extremes for decades to come. For power, Chevrolet had to one-up the already potent LT2 6.2-liter V8 engine found in the C8 Corvette Stingray. Their answer came in the form of the LT6, a 5.5-liter V8 engine that produces 670 horsepower and 460 poundfeet of torque. Mated to this groundbreaking engine is a flat-plane crankshaft that allows for an 8,600 rpm redline and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with a “short” 5.56 final drive ratio for better acceleration capabilities. When pressed for speed from a standstill, the new Z06 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a supercar-like time of 2.6 seconds. Following its unveiling, the reception of the C8 Z06 has been positive to say the least. A perfect testament to its attractiveness is the auction price of the 2023 Corvette Z06 VIN 001 — $3.6 million. This auction for the build slot of the very first C8 Z06 occurred at the 2022 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. Putting down the winning bid was Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, who also secured the winning $1 million bid on the first Z06 Convertible less than three months later at the auction house’s Palm Beach, Florida, event. Notably, the $4.6 million that Hendrick dropped for these Corvettes goes to charity. While the new Z06 is an astounding vehicle that raises the bar for sports cars and even supercars, Chevrolet isn’t done building upon the C8 platform. The American automaker has announced that all-wheel-drive hybrid and fully electric Corvette variants will be coming soon. Still, word of a more powerful naturally aspirated C8 Corvette is nowhere to be found. Could the C8 Z06 be a swan song for an ultimate naturally aspirated Corvette? Only time will tell, but that fact could possibly point to this iteration being a true collector’s car.

Established in 1991, Hennessey Performance Engineering has spent the last three decades pushing internal combustion to its limits. Not one for small feats, the Texas-based tuning firm is currently building a six-wheeled pickup truck that exceeds 1,000 horsepower while simultaneously finishing the development of a hypercar with a claimed top speed of more than 310 mph. As the tuner turned manufacturer flexes its fossil fuel muscles, it’s also looking toward the future. Enter Project Deep Space, Hennessey’s first all-electric vehicle. Scheduled to go into production sometime in 2026, Project Deep Space solves common problems that plague fast EVs while delivering a luxury-focused driving experience. According to Hennessey, the biggest concern surrounding its first EV was excessive weight from the batteries. In response, Hennessey came up with a radical concept. For starters, Project Deep Space features six wheels, each housing its own electric motor. Aside from giving the vehicle sixwheel drive, each electric motor will be capable of producing up to 400 horsepower. Add it all up, and you get an electric hypercar with well over 2,000 horses. Thanks to the additional axle and wheels, Project Deep Space will be able to deliver more grip from smaller tires. With added wheels comes added length. Project Deep Space will reportedly have a wheelbase of over 220-inches, making it nearly as long as a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The vehicle’s size works to its advantage, allowing it to house larger batteries for improved range. Inside, Project Deep Space takes inspiration from the legendary McLaren F1 and its central driving position. Behind the

driver’s seat are two passenger seats followed by a single seat in the third row. The rear seat is designed to be the most luxurious. To eliminate vibrations and movement from the road, the chair will feature a zero-gravity setup and lay-flat capabilities. Instead of standard doors, Hennessey plans to use the largest gullwing doors ever fitted to a production vehicle, allowing for easy entry. Ample storage space will allow customers to bring along at least four sets of golf clubs. Pricing for Project Deep Space starts at $3 million, and Hennessey has already begun taking orders. The goal is to produce 105 cars, commencing once the Venom F5 phases out of production in the coming years. While some figures such as horsepower and range have yet to be made public, Hennessey claims Project Deep Space will be the most expensive EV and the quickest to 200 mph. It’s safe to say that while Hennessey Performance may be entering a new era, it’s employing the same creative formula that has paved the way for its success thus far.

On a quest to dominate Ferrari in endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Michigan-based automotive manufacturer Ford released a secret weapon — the GT40. Designed at the hands of Roy Lunn, Carroll Shelby, and Ken Miles, the Ford GT40 quickly gained traction as a worthy competitor against some of the world’s most successful race teams. At the height of the model’s racing years, Ford crossed the finish line of the 1966 Le Mans securing first, second, and third position for a long-anticipated victory depicted in the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari. After decades of development, Ford along with designer Camillo Pardo debuted a concept of the GT40 at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Just 45 days after capturing the attention of every automotive enthusiast on the planet, Ford shocked the world by officially announcing that a production model was in the works. The automaker released the first GT example in 2005 with a two-year production life that made only 4,000 chassis available. The first-generation Ford GT is powered by a 550-horsepower 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with a classic six-speed manual trans-

mission to manage all of its raw power. The engineers went back to the drawing board for the subsequent generation, which began production more than a decade later for the 2017 model year. The new design flaunted an aggressive body design and more efficient engine platform. The biggest change was the implementation of a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, a stateof-the-art powertrain that efficiently produces more than 600 horsepower. Another big area of improvement was the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, capable of launching the American supercar from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds and propelling it to a top speed of 216 mph. Ford has continued to build upon the GT40’s legacy with mechanical refinements as well as special-edition variations that commemorate the brand’s push toward performance — the latest being the goldand-red liveried 2022 GT Holman Moody Heritage Edition, honoring the team that placed third in the automaker’s sweep at Le Mans in 1966. I am an outspoken person. Have been my whole life. And I’ve been (sometimes too) vocal in my criticisms of automakers, particularly General Motors Co. after it mishandled the Volt and Bolt, two forward-thinking cars that suffered from bewildering packaging, odd styling, and little marketing. But after a day in the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, I’m willing to say I was too hard on Detroit’s biggest automaker. Throughout my time with the Hummer EV, I heard about how it was “a moonshot” effort that saw GM cast aside the usual auto-industry bureaucracy to shorten the time from conception to production. It’s easy to dismiss this as standard-issue storytelling that PR folks spout on any launch, but consider this: We only heard about an electric Hummer in June 2019, it debuted in October 2020, and GM’s internal “Day 1” goal was September 2021. A two-year gestation for a midcycle update or even a cautious redesign of an existing product is tight. But to craft a clean-sheet design, riding atop a bespoke platform, carrying cutting-edge batteries and a three-motor layout, laden with an entirely new infotainment suite, and packing the best active safety system in GM’s arsenal during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and supply chain disruption? “Moonshot” feels pretty damn appropriate. Three electric motors — one on the front axle and two aft — produce a combined 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. But you need numbers that stupid to adequately motivate a vehicle that weighs 9,000 pounds. Punch the accelerator, and weight transfers rearward with all the subtlety of, well, a Hummer EV. The nose rises, and G-force pushes your body into the plush leather seat as speeds climb with little letup until you’re well past the limit of any American highway. This thing leaves every other

pickup, save the Rivian R1T and maybe the Ram TRX, in its dust. The ride quality is sublime. Plush and able to cope with pretty much any surface imperfection you could reasonably expect on a public road. The Hummer also exhibits impressive high-speed stability. The steering is weighty on center, requiring few course corrections when going down the road. But I’d hesitate to take the Hummer EV on lengthy road trips. The mud-terrain tires produce huge amounts of road noise (and there’s no gas engine to cover it up, like on a Raptor or TRX), and the removable roof panels, while good for open-air fun, create a lot of wind noise at highway speeds. There’s a temptation to look at the GMC Hummer EV as little more than an extravagance. I get it. But these kinds of EVs — the excessive, high-performance halos — are what will drive the average consumer away from gas, even if the last thing American roads need is another oversize, 9,000-pound pickup with awful visibility. This truck demonstrates that going electric doesn’t mean giving up what you love about a specific kind of vehicle. J ULY 2 022

News in late March that Formula 1 would once again blast through the streets of Las Vegas beginning in November 2023 got hearts and minds racing. Enough to smash past records for hotel room reservation requests at Wynn Las Vegas and its sister property, Encore. And who could blame them? It’s going to be a blockbuster: a Saturday night race, with the world’s fastest road course race cars zipping wheel-to-wheel past famous hotels and casinos on the strip. The 14-turn 3.8-mile track will have three straights, a single chicane, and an expected top speed of 212 mph. It’s a mouth-watering proposition for fans, and one that F1 hopes will erase sad memories of its last foray in the desert town, in 1981 and 1982, when the grand prix was held in the parking lot of Caesar’s Palace. Of course, in the 40 years since, its downfall has been blamed on various things, like an uninspiring layout, baking 98-degree heat, and tiny crowds. But, 1980 F1 world champion Alan Jones, who won the inaugural race (Michele Alboreto, the other) says it goes much deeper than that. “Probably a combination of that, plus the [then] American ignorance of Formula 1,” Jones says. “I mean, when I raced there I was continually asked, ‘Who do you think would win, [if you raced] your

car at Indianapolis?’ And I thought, ‘Well, that sums it up.’ “But, I think [Americans are] a lot more advanced with their knowledge of Formula 1 and European racing now. That is why [events in] Miami and Austin have been a good success. I also think that teams like McLaren, with an American influence, have helped.” Jones, a famously no-nonsense, straighttalking Australian, however, wasn’t one of the drivers who dubbed the previous Las Vegas layout “the worst circuit ever,” with the now-75 year-old simply stating that “if you want to talk about tight and twisty, unpassable circuits, reference Monaco.” But, he does remember how it made him feel. “It was run anticlockwise, the opposite way we normally used to race. And my neck was absolutely buggered about three-quarters of the way through,” he says. “I remember every time I went through a left-hander, my head used to fall over, literally, and I had to wait until I went to the next corner for it come back up again. So I was certainly glad the race was finished, that’s for sure.” Jones dominated at Formula 1’s first visit to Las Vegas in 1981, having jumped into the lead from second on the grid and never looked back, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of second-place Alain Prost (then in a Renault). And there was plenty to celebrate, with Las Vegas the last race for Jones before (his first) retirement, and his last for Williams, with whom he’d won the world championship — the squad’s first, making him the eternal favorite son. Jones says Sunday night was “fairly exciting,” giving only a hint at the goings-on. So, what was the party like? “I’d love to be able to tell you,” is all he would offer.

— and a black or red ceramic-coated exhaust give the Bomber a distinct new look that states the intention of this bike: dominance. It is clear to anyone who rides it — you are the center of attention.” Joining the Bomber are three triedand-true Combat Motors creations whose monikers also find inspiration in iconic aircraft: the Wraith, P-51 Fighter, and F-117 Fighter. While each of these builds may be different, they all sport the style and design cues that Combat Motors has become known for. These speedsters are carved entirely from solid billet blocks of military-grade aluminum and can exceed 160 mph, save for the F-117, which tops out at just over 120 mph. If that’s not enough, Combat is hard at work on another creation that will revive the beloved Hellcat name. The company notes that this next-generation Hellcat will “bring the inner child out of each of its riders.” While the forthcoming Hellcat may show obvious links to the previous iteration, it will be all-new and more readily available than other models. “We are building the last of these motorcycles with the S&S X-Wedge powerplant while working hard to design the new Hellcat, which will be available to a wider audience,” Lee says. Combat works with a variety of manufacturing partners in the United States that produce parts for every build on demand. Bikes are assembled by hand at Combat HQ in Birmingham, Alabama, and for buyers living in the continental United States, motorcycles are personally delivered by a Combat Motors team member. In terms of both performance and beauty, these builds are exquisite examples of what a true American motorcycle is capable of — and of the finesse that comes from a company with three decades of experience under its belt.
