In 1917, at the time it was begun, Ropsley was considered a small country estate. Sheltered behind stone walls and set on four magnificently landscaped and wooded acres, the home has the aspect of a French chateau, albeit one with a delightfully quirky English sprawl and ornamented with hints of Italy. Designed by award-winning architects Mellor, Meigs and Howe, who also created the Concert Hall at Bryn Mawr College, this home was considered a showcase for their home and garden designs. “This is a significant estate in an area of significant houses – one of the top five in the area,” says Michael Sivel of the Sivel Group, Fine Homes Specialists for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Fox & Roach Realtors. Located

ARCHITECTURAL GRANDEUR Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania just outside of Chestnut Hill, “this was an area that attracted well-to-do Philadelphians that wanted to be out of downtown, but have easy access by train.” It still does. There’s a history here, romantic and just a little scandalous. When the original owner’s widow married Edgar Allen Poe’s nephew, the home became known as Poe House. It was later purchased by a pair of embezzlers, affectionately known as “The Boys.” The current owners, says Sivel, “breathed new life into the place,” undertaking extensive renovations in 1992, while preserving museum quality details like the living room’s beamed ceiling, walk-in fireplace and hand-carved mantel. The rooms “are generously scaled,” he says. “The dining room would easily seat fifty.” There are six to eight bedrooms, depending on whether you require a writing room—or one of several other rather retro spaces. Outside, linden trees line a path, their heady fragrance mingling with the wisteria along the patio’s pergola. Peonies and azaleas fill formal gardens. A gazebo, set back in the trees, overlooks the 25 by 50-foot swimming pool. Magnificent fountains can be seen from the drawing room; others are scattered about the property.

Before entering the real estate industry, Kay Fulp spent her weekends attending open houses and driving past homes for sale. It was the office joke that if anyone was looking for a home, Fulp was the best resource for information.
