The New South Atlanta has become a major player on the international stage and the eighth largest metro area in the United States, and its growth is showing no signs of slowing down. Major corporations are headquartered here, attracting people from around the world and helping the city earn an unofficial title of the capital of the “New South.” Dan Jones, a real estate agent and luxury home consultant with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers in Atlanta has lived in Georgia for over thirty years and selling real estate for over ten years in the North Atlanta area. As a part of the Distinctive Collection Group that focuses on the needs of luxury buyers, Jones notes that some of the leading
areas for luxury homes are Buckhead, Milton and Sandy Springs. Average sale price of homes in these towns exceed $500,000. “The North side of Atlanta has southern charm and a rich history, yet has all of the amenities of a big cosmopolitan city,” says Jones. “There are many great neighborhoods and golf and country club communities to choose from.” The Manor Golf & Country Club in Milton, The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek and Windward in Alpharetta are just a few of these high-end communities. The Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association is one of the most active tennis communities in the country with 80,000 members. Tennis teams from most area subdivisions compete against each other. A warm climate means year-round enjoyment of recreational pursuits. The North Atlanta area has beautiful luxury second-home markets in the North Georgia Mountains and Lake Lanier. Notable for its beautiful rolling countryside and old trees, the area is an entry point to the Appalachian Trail. Capturing First Place in North Carolina What is there to say about Asheville? "It's on everybody's list for number one everything," chuckles Neal Hanks, president of Beverly-Hanks & Associates, REALTORSÂŽ, which happens to be the market sales leader in the mountains of western North Carolina. Variously called the number one place to retire, to run a small business and to reinvent oneself, Asheville has also been named one of the ten most beautiful places in America, the hippest city in the South and the best city in America for Locavores. With over twenty microbreweries, it has earned the moniker "Beer City USA" five times over. It's also a sportsman's paradise with over a million acres of national forest, proximity to ski slopes and eminently fishable lakes, all within twenty minutes to an hour of bustling downtownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thriving music and arts and crafts scene.
But this popularity is not a new trend. People have flocked to Asheville for over a century. In the Gilded Age, around 1890, Asheville became a destination for visitors escaping the summer scorch of Charleston, Atlanta and Raleigh. Homes here are as diverse as the population, with houses and condos downtown, golf course communities and rural enclaves. What you won't find are vast subdivisions. "Many of the homes are unique," says Hanks. "There's craftsmen, mountain, contemporary, all types of styles. Varied topography doesn't lend itself to tract building. " All part of Asheville's charm.
