Sport utility vehicles are not a fad. In fact, you know a trend has staying power when the world’s most prestigious brands get involved. In the last five years or so, almost every luxury automotive brand has either debuted an SUV or announced that one is imminent. Credit Porsche for getting the ball rolling with the Cayenne, its luxury high-performance SUV that both angered purists on arrival yet supplied the coin to keep the brand’s sports cars afloat.

The same is true of this month’s cover car, the Lotus Eletre, an all-electric SUV with hints of hypercar performance that the Norfolk-based automaker hopes will fund the rest of its lineup in years to come.

The extreme end of the luxury SUV spectrum is occupied by the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which takes Phantom-level amenities anywhere you want to go. On page 38, we show you what off-roading is like with a Rolls (in a word: nerve-racking). Another new high-end SUV is the DBX by Aston Martin, which recently unveiled a hoppedup version called the DBX707. While it’s true this supercar-on-stilts won’t get you as far into no man’s land as a Jeep, I’ll happily trade the latter’s ability to penetrate uncharted territory for the former’s cachet and crazy performance. Read why on page 21.

But if the middle of nowhere is your North Star, don’t settle for the bare minimum when a vehicle like the Hennessey-tuned Ford Bronco exists (page 32). It pairs Ford’s mountain goat of an SUV with a powerful tune from the Texas-based tuning house. For long hauls and overnighters, LOKI Basecamp produces the best truck campers money can buy (page 47).

There’s also nothing wrong with looking sharp while venturing off the pavement with your SUV, so we’ve assembled a full selection of outdoor adventure watches (page 68). Each is more durable than the average timepiece and comes with more functionality than a gold-plated multi-tool.

What these high-performance, luxury, and exotic SUVs have wrought is the ability to meet Mother Nature on your own terms, rather than hers.

a 0- to 60-mph time of less than 3 seconds and a top speed of 161 mph. That’s incredibly quick for a vehicle that also provides ample room for four people. Of course, electric power brings range into the discussion. In terms of range, the battery has a capacity of more than 100 kilowatt-hours, enough to drive 373 miles. Plug into a 350-kilowatt charger, and a 20-minute coffee break will extend your reach by another 248 miles.

With one look at the electric SUV’s design, its relationship to the Evija and Emira is clear.

Among the most obvious design cues that Lotus carried over are the air channels, which allow air to flow gracefully through and over the vehicle to increase aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, a technologically advanced cabin features multiple screens, including a slim driver display that presents only key details to reduce clutter, a 9-inch touch screen for rear-seat passengers, and an impressive 15.1-inch OLED touch-screen infotainment center that automatically folds flat and tucks itself into the dash when not in use.

The Eletre, Emira, and Evija form a fierce starting lineup for Lotus as the brand endeavors to electrify its entire fleet by 2028.

Since its initial release in 2020, the Aston Martin DBX continues to dominate the super-SUV space. Now, after two years of success, Aston Martin has developed the DBX707, billed as the world’s most powerful luxury SUV. A fierce exterior redesign emphasizes the DBX707’s performative capabilities.

Lamborghini America CEO Andrea Baldi weighs in on why the Urus has been such a sales success and sheds light on its electrified future.

In 2021, the Urus accounted for roughly 60 percent of Lamborghini’s auto deliveries — 5,021 out of a total 8,405 units. That’s up from 3,815 Uruses sold during the 2018 model’s debut year. From purely a monetary perspective, the large SUV has become the Italian automaker’s most important and profitable release. To find out why, we sat down with Lamborghini America CEO Andrea Baldi. duPont REGISTRY: Why do you think the Urus has been such a success for Lamborghini?

Andrea Baldi: When it came to market at the end of 2017, the timing could not have been better due to the rise in demand for SUVs. You get a Lamborghini that’s a super sports car in the body of a versatile car. By allowing you to host more than two people and take multiple weekend bags instead of one, it starts to have a lot of advantages.

The success has been so incredible that we’re in 2022, and we haven’t released any derivatives. The more customers drive the car, the more they talk about it, the more they realize that when you drive an Urus,

you don’t have that kind of handling that you would expect from an SUV. dR: Since it was such a massive shift from the cars Lamborghini made at the time of release, did shareholders push back?

AB: Yeah, I remember very well in 2012 when the concept car debuted at the Beijing Auto Show. I was lucky enough to be there. There was lots of excitement surrounding it, and the market for it was there. But it wasn’t a real car. It was a styling exercise that was anticipating what could be. The car still had to be approved and engineered. But the reaction of the media and the public was so strong that our shareholders began to support and discuss the idea further.

At the time, the Bentley Bentayga was also part of the conversation, and of course, we’re coming from a group that makes the Porsche Cayenne. There were already competitors in that arena, so we needed to prove that we would have something different that sold volumes to have a sustainable business case. It had to sell in high volumes to offset the considerable investment needed to develop it.

We did a secret study with journalists and customers, and we got a clear confirmation that we should build it. But the best part of all this process was when our red competitor, led

by Mr. Marchionne, issued a very clear statement saying that it was the wrong decision and they were not going to do it. That gave us J UNE 2 022

the opportunity to make a product without competitors in its super-specific niche space. dR: How does it feel knowing that even your red competitor is now following that formula?

AB: I think everyone has concluded that it’s a great idea for a super sports car brand to be present in this segment. It’s what is most desired at the moment, and it’s allowing everyone to get into a segment that is still expanding. Clearly, it’s the segment to be in, and competitors have realized that it’s obvious that this type of product is consistent with the DNA of a super sports car brand. dR: Will the Urus always remain focused on road performance, or will we get to see an off-roading version?

AB: Lamborghini stands for performance, so we will always work to deliver that kind of experience. But we also want to be brave while staying authentic to what we represent. It may be a bit unexpected.

So, while there are things I cannot tell you yet, we will always follow our values and make sure that we stand out as the different animals in the competitive arena.

dR: Is the upcoming electrified variant of the Urus a higher-performance vehicle?

AB: In 2024, we will present the first hybrid Urus, which will be part of the hybridization program that Lamborghini approved last year. The mid- to long-term strategy is not just to electrify the existing model range and the successors of Aventador and Huracán but also to plan for another model within the decade that is entirely electric. It’s not going to be the Urus. It’s going to be a fourth model.

I cannot spoil anything at the moment, but yes, we are working on derivatives. In 2024, you’ll see a big change in performance thanks to the car’s hybrid powertrain. This will give the car extra power, but we need to contain the increase in weight. I won’t say more, but you will see, we have surprises to come.

Texas-based tuner turned manufacturer Hennessey has made a name for itself developing some of the most powerful road-going vehicles ever backed by a full warranty. Whether through a four-figure horsepower output or six-wheel drive, Hennessey has proved that the only limit to how fast you can go is how much you’re willing to spend. Now it’s taking those talents and applying them to one of the most sought-after off-roaders of the moment.

The Ford Bronco is the latest model to receive the Texas treatment. Christened the Hennessey VelociRaptor 400 Bronco, it features a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. While its stock counterpart puts out only 315 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque, vital upgrades such as a new air intake, an exhaust system, a front intercooler, and engine management software give this Bronco a significant boost. A new heat exchanger and improved air filtration system help regulate operating temperatures. Developing 411 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 603 foot-pounds of torque at 3,200 rpm, the VelociRaptor 400 Bronco hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Thanks to extensive research and development, it retains full functionality of stock driving modes and off-road systems.

Hennessey also developed various visual upgrades to match this Bronco’s added grunt. Starting with 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch off-road tires and a suspension leveling kit, its stance is undoubtedly aggressive despite lacking any added height. Steel front and rear bumpers wear the VelociRator nameplate and match other darkened elements such as the wheels and grille, contrasting nicely against the body color. Buyers can add a bit of flair with optional Heritage Edition livery and an upgraded leather interior with embroidered headrests.

According to Hennessey, it plans to produce only 200 units of the VelociRaptor 400 Bronco for 2022. However, more build slots may be available next year. The upgraded package is available for both the two- and four-door versions regardless of roof choice.

Each SUV comes with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty and can be ordered through authorized Ford dealerships or directly from Hennessey. Including the price of a Bronco Badlands, the package should cost around $80,000. However, pricing will vary due to the high level of customization available.

If history is anything to go by, Hennessey is far from finished developing this off-roader. With the Bronco Raptor slated to arrive sometime this year, the VelociRaptor 400 Bronco is likely one of many powerful off-roaders still to come. For now, Hennessey offers a variety of fast Ford’s ranging from the VelociRaptor 600, based on the F-150 Raptor, to a 1,000-horsepower variation of the Mustang GT 500 known as the Venom 1000.

It’s negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit outside, I’ve just finished shooting shotguns with a man who trains special forces soldiers for a living, and I’ve got an SUV worth nearly $500,000 to drive. This is what awaited me on the other side of an invitation from Rolls-Royce to fly out to Sun Valley, Idaho, to test-drive a fleet of Cullinan and Ghost models across snow, gravel, and icy roads to see how these opulent machines perform when they’re off city streets.

My drive day began with an old friend, the 2022 Ghost Black Badge, which joined me on a 1,000-mile road trip across California earlier this year. However, this one had surrendered its 22-inch carbon-fiber wheels for a set of 20s wrapped in winter rubber.

Before setting off, I had good reason to believe the Ghost would perform well. Despite lacking the height and driving modes of the Cullinan, it shares the same standard allwheel-drive system, rear-wheel steering, and rides on the shared Architecture of Luxury platform.

Icy roads greeted me as I exited Ketchum, the small town where we stayed. While I quickly hit a gravel road, the Ghost excelled on both surfaces.The star of the show was its air suspension and what Rolls-Royce calls its “Magic Carpet Ride.” It’s one thing to smooth out bumps on the road, but tackling large holes off-road while retaining the same

comfort and quietness was truly impressive. With snow looming as we caravanned up a sizable mountain, it became apparent that this drive was less about whether the Ghost could make it and more so about how comfortable one could be while exploring off-road. (In short: It’s really comfortable.)

Hungry for seat time in a Cullinan, I swapped rides after lunch to head down the same mountain road. Unsurprisingly, it performed equally as well as its sedan sibling, isolating me from the elements while delivering the best ride quality in the business. To kill some time in the afternoon, I borrowed our group chaperone, Ken, for a trip to the gun range. While he normally trains special forces soldiers, he was on this trip to keep our multimillion-dollar fleet safe.

As I shot at bright red disks with a $500,000 SUV sitting behind me in a snowy parking lot, the purpose of the trip became clear. Rolls-Royce wants its customers to get out and drive. Whether it’s a 1,000-mile road trip or a charge up an icy mountain, the brand’s latest models are equal parts classy and capable — and owners shouldn’t hesitate to get out there and rack up the miles.

Fernando Alonso is confused, and even a little puzzled, but still up for the challenge.

“Yes. Why?” he wonders aloud when asked to add a series of five numbers. He leans over the table to glance at them in my notes and returns to his initial sitting position in three seconds with a playful smile.

“336,” he says.

That’s the total number of Alonso’s grand prix entries (including three non-starts) prior to the 2022 season, as we speak on a cool evening in Bahrain during the last test before Formula 1’s new era begins at the same venue in one week’s time: 17 entries with Minardi, 106 in two spells with Renault, 95 during another two at McLaren, 96 with Ferrari, and 22 with Alpine last year.

Perhaps he knows these numbers by heart, but he still acts surprised.

Alonso, who turns 41 in July, is set to surpass Kimi Räikkönen’s record of most grand prix entries this fall (the Iceman reached 353). “Fernando is still one of the best on the grid,” Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle said ahead of the season. “If he was in the Mercedes, I think he’s got world championship potential.”

Alonso himself is happy to agree. “Yes, I do,” he says. “I’m not here just to trav-

el around the world. … I came back to Formula 1 because I felt that I was able to perform still at the highest level possible.

And yeah, I do believe that if we have the right package in the next coming years, we could fight.”

Fed up with the perceived lack of competition in the sport in 2018, the twotime world champion stepped away. But rule changes and a desire to win lured the Spaniard back. New technical regulations and the introduction of a cost cap created an opportunity for teams like Alonso’s Alpine, which he joined in 2021, to move up a tier and potentially challenge the front of the pack.

The timing of his comeback was perfect.

Daniel Ricciardo’s defection to McLaren freed a place for Alonso with Team Enstone, with which he won both of his titles. A delayed implementation of the new rules until this season meant he had a year to re-acclimate and prepare for the change.

It was important for him too to understand if he’s able to complete 22 race weekends on five different continents in a single year and still enjoy it.

“I think I got everything I was looking for last year,” he says. “I thought that it was the right thing to do to come back.

Other series were not so appealing after the pandemic — they were all struggling a little bit for sponsors and for competitive seats and teams and … I think Formula 1 is still very healthy in that respect.”

The Spaniard’s sabbatical rekindled his love for motorsport. “I saw Formula 1 from [the] outside,” he says, “which is very different to watching from the inside, because here you live day by day, and performance is the only topic that you talk [about], 24 hours a day.”

Alonso’s first lap during the 2021 sprint race at Silverstone showed he’s still a wizard at starts. His fierce battle with Lewis Hamilton in Budapest not only allowed Alonso’s teammate to win a race but proved that his command of the craft remains in top form. His third-place podium in Qatar — edging out one of the Red Bulls — was the final bit of evidence needed to show that this Alonso is just as good as the one before.

••• In 2021, the Renault team rebranded as Alpine, though you may hear some fans call it Team Enstone, referring to the U.K. village where it has been based since 1991.

“Until Qatar, I thought [the podium] was not too important,” Alonso says. “I mean, it’s nice to be on the podium, but it’s not the end of the world [if it doesn’t happen]. But then, with months coming after Qatar, I realized that, yeah, it was important. It was important to release some of the weight on my shoulders, and the fans, and expectations that are always created around me.”

Following Räikkönen’s retirement at the end of the last season, Alonso is the most experienced driver on the grid. But it’s not just the age and the number of entries under his belt. Fernando is the only driver in Formula 1 with racing experience in IndyCar, WEC, Daytona, and Dakar. He feels he’s as fast as before and also better equipped to push the team forward.

But will he have a good enough car? Is Alpine ready to provide it?

“Well, you never know until you are in that point,” he says. “At the moment, we are making the team stronger. … Obviously, how competitive you are is difficult to know until we put the cars on track and [develop] during the year.”

It’s clear, though, that Alpine won’t be able to fight for wins (at least on a regular basis) this year. CEO Laurent Rossi talks about a 100-race project and stresses that “the objective is to reach a level of competitiveness that places us on the podium as many times as possible in 2024.”

You don’t have to be as good as Fernando Alonso at math to add another 100 to his 336 grand prix entries. It would be a very big number — and would take a few years.

Does he have his own deadline?

“Yeah, probably,” he answers. “Because I will not race more than four seasons, I think. It would be nice to reach 400. That’s a good number.”

Nearby, the 6,203-square-foot carriage house contains a spacious office, a full gym with enough machines to train a small rodeo team, and an underground wine cellar with the capacity to hold 3,000 bottles.
