Star Wars Week at Spring’s Preserve Jazmine Alvarez | Soph, ore member If you missed Star Wars week at Springs Preserve, then you missed out on some fun! Springs Preserve had an exciting event during the final week of June for their “Playing with Lights” exhibit, called “Star Wars Week”! Where you could make lightsabers out of pool noodles, watch the movies, get Jedi training and even take pictures with Darth Vader, Luke, Leia and even Chewie! There were hundreds of families there, all of which were excited to participate in Star Wars Week. My job while volunteering was to help kids put on their Jedi robes. All of them were especially nice, funny, and were excited to make their lightsabers. I would ask them questions about which movie was their favorite and who their favorite characters were. Some of them answered the usual questions like Luke, Leia, or Han Solo while others, especially the cute little girls, would answer with Vader or Palpatine. Even the other volunteers had a laugh with that. After we ran out of materials to make the robes, I helped out the other volunteers next to our station making lightsabers. The line for that stretched practically across the entire Origin Museum! Some of the other volunteers and I made our own lightsabers once the lines started dwindling down. After five hours of Star Wars fun, it was time to clean up and prepare materials for the next day. The whole event was great. All the volunteers there were helpful and courteous to everyone, they joked around and helped out with the event. I also got to help out the community and make some new friends that were with Durango Key Club. All in all, I was so glad I was invited to join Durango Key Club with this event, and I will definitely consider joining Key Club for the 2016-2017 school year.

Kiwannis Fireworks Booth

On July 1, 2016, members volunteered at one of many firework booth stands and it was an interesting experience because I was a local customer before this event. My shift was during the hours of 9 to 12 P.M. on a Friday. The booth I attended included a few Key Clubbers from various high schools within Nevada. The task was to sell fireworks, to use caution within the area, to not burn down the stand, and to work efficiently to gain more customers. I had fun along with the other individuals and getting to spend time with new people made the experience all the more interesting. The task was not difficult and the other Key Clubbers seemed really chill and really social as always. What I found to be distinct was each individual’s personality to be intriguing. Of course we were all nice, yet we had fun through the different means of social interaction we had to offer. I honestly had a good time, though I did feel bored when there was not much to do. I was satisfied with helping customers with their choices of products to purchase and helping other Key Clubbers function around the booth when they had arrived. Volunteering here felt the same as any other event knowing that I had given service to assist in making July 4th a memorable day for others with their family and friends. I strongly believe that I will be more involved in Key Club in the future through hard work, dedication, commitment, teamwork, creating a more fun atmosphere, recruiting, and offering service to the community

Assisting Distributing Food to the Needy Yuriy Vahidov | Secretary Helping the Methodist Church hand out food for the needy was a great and fulfilling experience! The food was good quality and there was so much to give to the people who needed it. Seeing the faces of elderly and youthful folks alike at the plenitude of food choices was a great feeling. We either helped keep the tables packed with food or personally helped visitors with carrying all the food through the line and to their cars. One of my favorite things about the event was that the volunteers and visitors knew each other, so everyone was smiling, cracking jokes, and just having a pleasant time. The place cleared out in 2 hours, but not before I personally got to talk to some great and interesting people while they gathered their food items. Even the staff running the food giveaway were pleasant and very cool to work with. I’m really glad that I was exposed to the experience because I had never been to a church before! It was cool to see how they’re set up and the types of people who go there, and how happy they are regardless of their circumstances.
