CRAYON INITIATIVE Within the month of February one event that stood out to me was the Crayon Initiative. The event entailed us to find crayons and donate them to the Crayon Initiative. The way I donated was by first finding said crayons. Then I left the crayons in a bowl of running water. The water has to be hot in order to work. You can leave it out or try doing it with the water still running. Be careful to not put too many together if you are leaving it out as the wax could rub together. After peeling, dry them out. - Steven Huynh

RECYCLABLE COLLECTION As the months go by, Bolsa Grande Key Club continues to follow safety protocols for COVID-19 by doing online services at home and social distancing. This month, Bolsa Grande Key Club competed against Pacifica Key Club in a math competition to raise money for the UNICEF Math Projects. As a result, BGKC won the competition and raised over $14,000! Other events that BGKC members did this month included collecting and sorting out recyclables in order to donate the funds back to the club, collecting and peeling crayons to donate them to the Crayon Initiative, and answering questions (math, vocabulary, history, pictures, etc.) in order to donate rice and beans. In honor of Valentine’s Day, Bolsa Grande Key Club members spent time making “e-cards” dedicated to that holiday. All e-cards that were made are sent to the kids who are a part of St. Jude in order to remind them that they are important and loved. Last but not least, Bolsa Grande Key Club officers hosted an interview through Zoom in order to search for a new board for the 2021-2022 term. The board included a new Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Tech Editor, Senior Class Director, Junior Class Director, Sophomore Class Director, Freshman Class Director, and Member Relations. After a successful interview, new officers have been chosen and are ready to serve for the BGKC 2021-2022 term! - Gwendolyn Tran

VALENTINE CARDS As we all know, these unprecedented times have created several obstacles. With the quarantine and social distancing mandates, many of us have become extremely stressed without the company of our peers that we were used to. What better way than to spend one’s free time volunteering by making Valentine’s Day cards for your dearest friends and family? This year’s Valentine’s Day, as we all know, is extremely different than what we normally would expect. As one of the events and virtual community service opportunities offered this month, making digital e-cards is a way to not only release stress, but to celebrate a fun holiday! The restrictions for this short, but well-earned event would be to: use one of the following websites (123greetings, crosscards, etc.) to select a card, find a recipient to receive the card, and then take a picture and send proof to the person in charge. Although it may not have been the same as personally hand-making cards and giving it to the person yourself, the wide variety of different types of Valentine cards were super adorable and enough to send to a significant other or friend. During this event, I sent fourteen cards to my girls; suppose it became a Valentine’s Day delivery service! Despite my desire to do other in-person services, I appreciate the online opportunities provided during this time; especially considering how it still is fun, inclusive, and extremely interactive. - Cynthia Nguyen This February was an eventful month for Key Club at BGHS! This month, Division 4 North had a chance to grieve those who unfortunately passed away due to COVID19 by donating $1.25 to get materials to build a paper flower, which is then dropped off at the doorsteps of those who lost a loved one to COVID-19. Another event offered by Key club this month was FreeRice! FreeRice is a website that allows students to answer questions in donation for rice, which is then converted into money that’s donated to the World Food Programme. In addition, there was the Recycle Collection event where you collect as many recyclables as you can, and take them to the PC’s house where they are donated. There was also an event where members could make Valentines e-cards that they can send to the children at St. Jude Hospital. Crayon Initiative is where members would spend time collecting and peeling crayons to donate them to the Crayon Initiative. Additionally, there were interviews this month to find the new board for the next term of Key Club! Finally, our club had a competition against Pacifica Key club, where you answer math questions to raise money for children's education! - Monique Guillen

KINDNESS WEEKEND A service I did for Key Club this month was kindness week. For Kindness week I earned four hours of service by doing everyday tasks. For Friday, I wrote some positive affirmations and quotes on sticky notes and left them around my sisters’ house. She says that all the notes brightened up her day and that she appreciated them all. For Saturday’s task, I chose to wash dishes after dinner as a kind gesture to help my mom. On Sunday, I wrote a letter to a friend showing them my appreciation and love. I love to show my gratitude to my friends and sending them a letter was another way to do so! They said that they loved my letter and said that it made them very happy. On the last day of kindness week, I learned a bit of piano. I’ve had a keyboard for a while, but never practice and put it off. Talking time to learn basic piano and music theory skills ended up being a very helpful and fun way of calming down my stress from school and being more creative. Overall, kindness week ended up being one of my favorite services so far. It made me more conscious of what I do and helped me show kindness and gratitude in different ways. I will continue doing more random acts of kindness like this for myself and those around me. - Julietta Brito, 2024

On Saturday, February 20th, I attended the monthly DCM, Bee My Quaran-tine, with division 04 East and South. It started with everyone being put into different zoom breakout rooms to have a division meeting. In our meeting, Vivian Du started with an old business where one member from every club discusses what their club has done for the month. Vivian then continued on with new business, where she introduced things like selling stickers for PTP, a ToCoToCo fundraiser for PTP, and participating in a division service called Rose River Memorial. Vivian also ended the division meeting with member, officer, club, and advisor recognitions. After the meeting ended, everyone left the breakout room in order to continue on with the DCM. The DCM proceeded with a 15 minute service where we wrote virtual cards for a hospital. During those 15 minutes, the ltgs also read out “love notes” that people sent for each other via google forms. After the service, everyone was put into groups of around 8-10 people to do a competition where each group competes to complete a puzzle and whoever finishes first wins. There were two rounds for this and my group won both, most likely because Katie Doan, our ltg elect, was in our group and she is a very competitive individual. Overall, I personally found this DCM very fun and entertaining and was glad that I did not oversleep and miss it. - Joanna Bui, 2023

BEAN BEAN BEAN

ONLINE EVENTS This month was a bit more weird than usual. We had to stay at home instead of doing outside activities. I was used to saving time to go out to the Thomas homeless shelter but with the change II was a bit confused at first. As the days passed in February I slowly got used to it. As the day passed on I was behind on hours so I calculated how to get there. Though I may fail reaching the max hours in the first event I sign up to, it has taught me to manage my time better. Moving on to the beginning of the next event I set a timer and told myself to finish an hour everyday. I mostly stick to the schedule and I made max hours on bean bean bean. I felt so accomplished that I indulged in chocolate. This month I attended one meeting and I believed it was a funny meeting. At the beginning we celebrated Gwen's birthday. As we came to a birthday list of the people of last month one of the members pointed out that Bradley’s birthday was missing. She later learned that it was the birthday of last month and I laughed internally. - Dylan Lam During these difficult times, with the epidemic going on, we cannot go outside and do events like we used to. A way to stay safe and get help from others is to do the online events that our club provides. For the month of February, I did the event BeanBean. The event BeanBean is where people answer various types of questions to get beans. The beans that are donated are generated into money where they go to many helpful organizations such as hospitals. I like to do the multiplication tables since they are fast and easy to do. I usually set a goal of 1000 beans a day. They help get my mind racing since I usually speedrun them a lot. BeanBean also has many other categories to choose from such as What Is This, Times Tables, English Vocab, Spanish Vocab, World Capitals, ASL Alphabet, and the Periodic Table. For What is This, the game gives us an image and we have to guess what it is. Times Tables is just multiplication, and the vocab is just answering the right definition. World Capitals are easy if you know your states. ASL Alphabet is sign language and the periodic table is answering what element symbol it has. - Austin Le For the month of February, I decided to participate in the BeanBeanBean event. Although this was an online event, I still found it interesting how I was able to donate beans from only answering simple questions. I also found it very helpful that questions asked on the website were placed in categories to make donating beans a little more entertaining. For example, if I did not want to answer the multiplication questions, I had other options such as improving my english vocabulary and memorizing the ASL alphabet. Overall, I really enjoyed the BeanBeanBean event and I will be delighted if another one is given in the future! - Katherine Duong

FREE RICE

Though all services have been online, Key Club is still going strong with giving back to our community! From Freerice, Valentine’s Card Making, Crayon Initiative, UNICEF Math Competition with Pacifica, Recyclable Collection, and the Kindness Weekend with Pay It Forward, members were given many opportunities to help out the community, even online. For this month, I participated in the BeanBeanBean service event where we had to complete a series of questions like math problems or identifying objects to earn beans. For each correct question, beans are donated to charities to help fight hunger. I spent around 2 hours answering questions, and I was able to accumulate about 1,700 beans. These beans were donated to charities such as Feeding America, St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, and Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. In my opinion, participating in BeanBeanBean is a great and easy way to give back to the community while having fun because it is something you can do in your free time. We can’t wait to go back to in-person services, but until then, Key Club is still thriving and working hard to serve others through virtual services. I am so glad to say that I am a part of this extremely, wonderful, amazing club! - Jacklyn Pham

For the Bolsa Grande Key Club service dubbed Unicef Free Rice, we were tasked with answering questions correctly to donate one grain of rice. I answered math table questions which ranged from zero times zero to twelve times twelve. Over the course of about three and a half hours, I managed to solve a copious amount of problems, resulting in me donating a thousand grains of rice. (Shout out my two dawgs: Ricky & Tails - DN) However, my run wasn’t perfect. The probability of a clumsy individual such as I missing a question was not to be underestimated. The sly twelve times six and elusive six times twelve would always get in my way, like a hero stopping a villain’s vying schemes. The snarky twelve times seven and menacing seven times twelve would also slip away from my grasp at times. Eleven times twelve, twelve times eleven, nine times eight, eight times nine—all criminals trying to stop me in my tracks. However, as frustrating as it was, I pushed on so I could feel the glory of feeding children a thousand grains of rice. But thirty minutes before midnight, the holy number finally revealed itself, the luminous one thousand. And that’s when I sighed—finally, it was time to rest. - Franklin Hoang Within the month of February one event that stood out to me was the Crayon Initiative.
