WORDS FROM OUR LTG

Hello Division 4 North! Your passion and dedication

for serving never fails to amaze me. To start, I will be shifting emails to the CNH District G-Suite where this email was sent from. Nonetheless, as we shift from summer back into the school year I would like to address the importance of mental health and rest. Burn out and stress should be acknowledged and taken care of! As student leaders and adults, we dedicate a large portion of our time to our work. When encountered with overwhelming situations, please take a step back and breathe! Talk about your stress with someone who understands or take a couple of days to recoup. As lieutenant governor, I hope to establish an environment where everyone in the division feels comfortable and appreciated.

AUGUST DCM

The August DCM, In It to Win It, was a collaboration between Division 4 North and 4 West Dragons. I was very excited to attend this DCM because it was our first collaboration with another division in the term. As EA, I helped plan the Council Meeting and I was able to meet multiple, new people from 4 West. It was interesting to work with another division, and I was able to learn a lot more about teamwork. We decided to create an escape room google form, scavenger hunt, and ice breakers. Also while we were sorting break out rooms, we got to see a special show from 4 West IP LTG Diego. It was one of my favorite moments in the DCM because it was very entertaining, and his dancing was enjoyed by everyone! Jessica and I were team leaders for our break out room, and we were able to bond quickly with our group. We got really competitive towards the end though since we all wanted to win the free division merch. We were all able to work together through the scavenger hunt by splitting up the work. The escape room was difficult though, and we weren’t able to get completely through it but I think our team was really successful and had fun! I hope to have another memorable DCM next month with Division 4 West again and Division 30 South. - Katie Doan

AUGUST TRASH PICKUP One service that stood out to me during my time in Key Club includes the Trash Pickup Service near Tastea on July 24, 2020. From the service, I realized that many citizens of Garden Grove trash the food plaza with plastic containers as well as waste. It appears as though some customers do not care for the environment, since they litter trash anywhere they want. For example, boba cups, receipts, and bottle caps can be found throughout the plaza with a glance when the plaza was empty in the morning (the time of the trash pickup). I believe citizens should recycle as well as dispose of trash in trash cans throughout the plaza in order for the plaza to become cleaner. As a result, volunteers would not have to work as hard in order to maintain cleanliness in the plaza. Nevertheless, the service was memorable because I could meet up with many friends after distancing myself from them due to quarantine regulations. I enjoyed cleaning the plaza while making jokes with them and exploring restaurants around the plaza. More importantly, during the service, my friends and I could clean up after a neighborhood that many people visit. Furthermore, I believe this service was special to me because I was able to meet Mr. Thonthat for the first time during a service. Also, I noticed that he brought along two dogs to walk although I did not know their names. Overall, the service was very fun because I could hang out with my friends while making the food plaza a cleaner place to visit! - John Nguyen The garbage pickup was an uplifting service since it was one of the first in-person services since quarantine started. The service was more enjoyable because the volunteers were able to see other key club members while also helping out. Although picking up trash is dirty work, being around friends and working together made the service very easy. I also enjoyed this service since the other services were at home without any teamwork, cooperation, and communication between others. Although the online services contribute to helping others, the garbage pickup topped it. Even while wearing masks and waking up early in the morning, working with friends was a distraction to all of the obstacles. A bonus to the service was having stores to go to after the service since we were also able to spend time together. After the service, we all went to get donuts which were great since we were able to spend more time with each other from long months in quarantine. Overall, the service was a great addition to the online services and I would recommend others to do so as well. In the future, I hope there will be more in-person services as well as a variety of them since it would be more appealing to those who can volunteer in those services. - Preston Ngo

ONLINE SERVICES For this month’s service, I participated in the bean bean bean online event. This event was about donating beans through choosing correct answers on the website beanbeanbean.com. The website gave you multiple categories of topics that you could choose from to answer the questions, these categories were what is this?, times table, english vocab, spanish vocab, world capitals, asl alphabet, and the periodic table. They also gave the option of choosing the difficulty on some of the categories which was easy, medium, and hard which the harder the setting, the more beans you earn. If you were on the easy setting, every answer was 1 bean, while the medium setting gives you 2 beans per answer and the hard setting gives you 3 beans for every answer. This service was very fun and convenient to do due to our situation right now. It helps us help others without risking anyone’s health. It is a simple event that I could do at any time of the day and I could also multitask at the same time while doing this event. I chose doing the times table category to answer most of the questions and I enjoyed doing this event as well since it refreshed my memory about the multiplication table. This was a great and fun event to do. - Anh Thu Pham Regardless of the pandemic, Key Club has been providing many opportunities to contribute to the community. With the virus, I’m not fully comfortable with going outside in public spaces, but there were multiple services provided that allowed me to serve the community virtually. Two services I decided to take part in includes the Freerice Project and BeanBeanBean, where I could help donate to those in need by simply answering questions on a website. In the Freerice Program, money is generated to assist those facing hardship and suffering. By playing and answering questions on the Freerice website, 100% of all funds are donated to the World Food Programme and goes directly towards helping families in need. In BeanBeanBean, as you play various online quizzes to collect beans, money is donated to several organizations, such as Feeding America and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Despite not being able to participate in services physically, I’m glad that I was able to serve my community. I’ve learned a lot about how I can contribute and serve the community through various online donation programs that allow me to virtually help others in struggle. This month was a wholesome and worthwhile experience. It has encouraged me to try and find other ways to help and serve others, especially during this time of hardship and social distancing. - Charity Lai

WADYS On August 8, 2020, Bolsa Grande Key Club attended the August WADYs event. In this event, 10 members were selected to help distribute food from the OC Food Bank for the elderly in a retirement home. One notable memory from this event I have is when we had to discover a method to store trolleys in the host’s car. As a new member in Bolsa Grande’s Key Club, this WADYs event turned out to be my first ever in-person service. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, in-person service events are difficult to schedule; however, regulations such as the requirement of personal protective equipment (gloves and masks) enable members to attend these events. Throughout the month of August, several other service events were able to be held, such as the weekly garbage pick-ups. Also, Bolsa Grande’s Key Club hosted a Back2Skool Bonanza event, which promoted the competition between classes and individual members. By the end of the month, the class who has the highest hour average would get discounts for shirts and badges, whereas the member with the highest hour growth would receive a free polo and badge, along with a quarter zip. Seeing this Back2Skool Bonanza event as an incentive for attending more services, I decided to sign up for the August WADYs event, in which I was able to familiarize myself with other members, as well as the club itself. - Alex Truong In the month of August, Bolsa Grande Key Club brought back their monthly service event, WADYS, which took place on Saturday, August 8. At the time of 8:00 in the morning, members were able to help deliver food packages to the elderly while still being safe. Everyone was wearing gloves and masks while loading the boxes onto the dollies and delivering them to the elders’ doors. With COVID-19 still happening in the world, the attendance of the event had to be cut in half, which minimized to only 10 members being able to go. Although attendance was smaller than usual, members were able to deliver the food packages to the elderly fairly quickly while still maintaining social distancing guidelines. The event was originally supposed to last until 12:00pm, however, we finished in about an hour and a half. I was very excited to have the ability to help the community physically again rather than through online events. The feeling of helping those in need physically is just different for me than helping people through websites such as Freerice or Beanbeanbean. I can tell that the elders were very grateful that some of us were brave enough to step out of our houses to help provide food for them. Overall, my experience at WADYS during this time brought back some normalcy and I hope to attend this event in the later months. - Danny T. Nguyen

BUDDY CLUB CHALLENGE On August 14th, Bolsa Grande Key Club and Pacifica Key Club faced off in a service battle through Zoom. We began the event with a small ice breaker called Soulmate. A Pacifica member decided to step up and find their soulmate. After multiple rounds, he finally found his other half... another Pacifica Key Club member. After that, members began to collect rice grains throughout the hour. It was incredibly intense as members answered grammar, vocabulary, and math questions to slowly increase their rice grain count. Eventually, the last few minutes came into place and members sent in their grains to their respective presidents to count up. The air was tense as members waited for their final results. It was then revealed that the winner was... Pacifica! Though it was disheartening to lose, Bolsa still did our best. Our board will be doing a spicy noodle challenge as a result of losing. - Bradley Vu

BIG & LITTLE OTTER CHALLENGE The Big and Little Otter challenges began in August, where its first challenge was to have a wholesome bonding with your partner. My little is Angeline Nguyen and we decided to have a picnic at the park a week before school. Our plan was to film a little vlog video about our bonding, and we had some fellow Key Club friends to help with our experience. For the most part, Angeline and I relaxed in the shade while our friends played volleyball in the distance. A while later, some of us decided to go to Tastys and KUPS near the school to buy some delectable treats for our picnic. We were able to bond more while eating and fulfilled our hungry appetites from waiting for this picnic. Furthermore, we continued to record our vlog video and discussed our anguish on going back to online school as well as how quickly our summer went by. We chatted about our new found hobbies and predicted our new teachers for the upcoming school year. Even though we were relaxing under the shade, it was still very hot that day. Overall, this Big and Little Otter challenge was an excellent way to get closer to my friend, and it was very memorable to reunite with others. - Sunny Do

THOMAS HOUSE During August, Bolsa Grande Key Club’s board worked alongside the event coordinator for the Thomas House Homeless Shelter to create the food distribution event for members of Bolsa Grande’s Key Club. The event details are as follows; 10 volunteers -including a club officer- will work to sort items that were requested by the residents of the shelter. These items will later be picked up and distributed by the shelter staff members to residents. Of course, during turbulent times as these, safety precautions will be implemented to ensure the safety of everyone involved, these are the requirements of wearing masks and gloves when entering and attending the event. Aside from event details, I hope that the Thomas House event will remain a weekly event for Bolsa Grande Key Club for years to come after I depart from high school. - Ben Vo
