Prosperous Communities Finding the Right Job/Youth Employment Support for people looking for work, including careers advice, practical help for CV/application writing, developing skills, employment related training and opportunities to gain vital experience via work placements and volunteering. Specialist support is available through 2 projects, one supporting 16-24 yr olds and one for the over 25’s.

People can call to book an appointment or drop in at the following venues: Tuesdays John Reynolds Centre, 2pm - 4pm (all ages) Wednesdays St Mellons Community Centre, 1pm-4pm (16-24) St Mellons Enterprise Centre, 1pm-3pm (Over 25s)

Citizens Advice Outreach and Advice ECLP Communities First is supporting the CAB to provide people with early access to quality assured advice, information and support on a range of topics (including debt, benefits, housing, health, education, consumer issues, relationships and other issues).

Our sessions rotate at informal venues with relaxed atmosphere and focus on practical online skills such as applying for benefits, shopping/banking safely, communicating with friends/family. In addition we are looking to progress participants from ECLP sessions into mainstream IT learning opportunities at neighbourhood learning centres where they can build on basic skills to get them ‘job ready’.

Youth Engagement This enables young people to benefit from activities which divert them from anti-social behaviour and reoffending. The project will work with community members and young people to address antisocial behaviour and youth offending by including young people as active developers and delivers in community development projects. We will also provide mentoring to young people who have offended by working with them to find local engaging activities to build their selfconfidence and promote well-being.

Contact Kevin Butt - 02920 871016 kevin.butt@cardiffandvalecab.org.uk Supporting Enterprise We are targeting groups wishing to explore social enterprise and individuals wishing to explore selfemployment or business start-up. We will run training on all aspects of business planning and setting up a social enterprise, helping to demystify the process.

We will also support participants to access expert partners such as Business in Focus and Wales Cooperative Centre and support services such as C3SC and SOVA. We are always on the lookout for social enterprise opportunities and we create forums for community members to develop those opportunities.

Energy Savers The project helps tackle fuel poverty by encouraging energy savings in the home. We will work with ECLP families to increase energy efficiency in their homes.

The project provides: a) advice on how to switch suppliers and get a better deal, b) advice on how to work out which is the best tariff for you, and c) how to be more energy efficient in the home and save money on energy bills. We also work with the local Credit Union to encourage participants to open an account and save the money they used to spend on higher energy bills.

Healthy Communities Promoting Mental Wellbeing We support individuals who are struggling to cope with everyday life pressures and minimise the risk of them developing a more severe mental health condition, by offering ‘5 ways to wellbeing’ sessions. We encourage participants to take responsibility for their own actions in seeking to improve their Mental wellbeing. We do this by delivering training and advice and also by supporting the setup of peer support groups to provide ongoing, indefinite support.

Reducing Risky Behaviour amongst Young People We work with partners to raise awareness amongst local young people of the damaging impact that all types of risky behaviour (i.e. smoking, alcohol, drugs, sexual health) has on their health and the potential consequence of becoming involved in risky behaviours.

We work with youth clubs to identify issues and offer Girls and Boy’s ‘Night In’ events. These events provides friendly and informal health risks advice whilst treating participants to food and pampering activities.

We also bring specialist partners to deliver activities or speakers to raise awareness of specific issues such as Dementia, or offer stress and anxiety relief sessions using mindfulness, complementary therapies or artsbased workshops.

When appropriate we also support the delivery of theatre based workshops and other related projects in schools to raise awareness of risky behaviour amongst its pupils.

ECLP Communities First Project List for Partners Improving Health and Fitness We tackle high levels of inactivity and obesity featured in the cluster population by delivering a range of activities that: • Promote physical activity through community events to identify community buy-in to specific initiatives • Support the creation and development of communityled physical activity initiatives • Work with existing groups to incorporate exercise on their regular sessions • Promote young people to be trained and deliver physical activity sessions.

Health and Nutrition We raise awareness about the positive effects of healthy eating and the impact that bad nutrition can have on people’s ability to lead a healthy lifestyle. We do this in a number of different ways:  Delivering healthy eating projects, such as Food and Nutrition Skills for Life so as to encourage healthy eating.  Working with existing food coops and community groups to introduce healthy eating/ cooking initiatives  Supporting healthy eating activities at community events and promoting healthy alternatives.  Educate participants about budgeting and the preparation of low-cost meals.

Contact Lee Meredith - Lee.M@c3sc.org.uk - 07969 184809 Supporting Vulnerable People to live in the Community We will work with our partners to target those most at risk of becoming isolated, such as older people or those suffering with chronic health conditions, for example diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke or dementia. The aim is to establish local networks of support for those with ‘common’ problems to come together to share experiences and to minimise the risks of isolation.

The project aims to link those who are more isolated to appropriate existing services, identify gaps and help establish local networks that will provide support with day to day task, such as shopping and basic assistance around the home by referring into local agencies/ services. (ie. free gardening services by volunteers)

We work to build understanding of the consequences of certain health related, risky behaviours to minimise the impact in later life and reduce the numbers of people living with a chronic illness.

We use health checks and other health related programmes to engage and help participants and the key to this project is to work with trained “Health Champions” that will pass on to the community relevant health messages and link with the relevant services/projects.

ECLP Communities First Project List for Partners opportunities for parents to become engaged with schools through a variety of family learning activities.

We work with PTAs and schools to overcome their barriers to providing family learning opportunities and work with Community Focussed Schools Officers to host a range of activities within schools and other community facilities that will not only teach skills, but help overcome barriers to learning and encourage interaction between family members.

this year we will be able to better support the children and the parents. We will work closely with the Community Focussed Schools Officer to develop projects and activities that will enrich the school experience for pupils and encourage parental engagement in their child’s education, such as after school and inter-generational activities.

Contact Caroline Hardy - Caroline.H@c3sc.org.uk 07969 184 875 Widening Access to Local Learning The project promotes adult learning opportunities, creates new learning opportunities where there is identified need and removes barriers to learning, working in partnership with training providers to offer taster sessions and short courses in surroundings that improve confidence around formal learning. Courses are delivered wherever community members feel comfortable. For some this may be in their local primary school but for others this may be outside formal learning environments, taking diversionary activities to an educational level.

Participants may choose to train as community learning reps or mentors, choose to volunteer to provide information about learning opportunities or host taster sessions, training or learning fairs in community spaces. They will be supported to arrange and promote courses themselves and feed in to the curriculum planning of the Cardiff and Vale Community Learning Partnership.

Once a child or family are referred to us via the school or indeed via self referrals from the family, we work on a one to one basis with these families to help them selfidentify their own needs. Once identified we refer and signpost them to the most appropriate partner organisation who can help resolve their issues and provide more formal family support. Taking pastoral care into the family home, the project nurtures positive relationships between families and schools.

We will also support Cardiff and Vale College to introduce and facilitate pre-enrolment sessions in the new Eastern High School, as well as delivering ‘results day’ support and enrolment activities targeted at those pupils identified as likely to become NEET.
