First and foremost we would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope that everyone in our Community has a great holiday period no matter how they spend it.

ECLP will be there in the New Year to help you achieve any New Year’s resolutions that you have, such as losing weight or exercising more, putting more money into your savings account or getting back into learning. Our qualified and committed staff are only a phone call, email, tweet or Facebook message away, so please do get in touch!

HEALTH ECLP Communities First’s Mocktail Bar - a tasty way to love your liver! Last week we ran our first Hawaiianthemed ‘Mocktail’ bar in Llanrumney as a new initiative to get local people making alcohol-free cocktails for themselves as an alternative to reaching for a glass of wine or a bottle of lager, something that is particularly tempting over the holiday period.

The Mocktail Bar offered people the chance to make three different exotic drinks with our volunteer bar staff. As well as going through each stage of making the drinks with them to ensure they’d be confident to try the drink at home, the focus was on talking about recommended daily allowances of alcohol and why it’s a healthy choice to reduce the amount you drink to within guideline levels. We had plenty of resources at hand such as the alcohol unit cups and wheels which allowed people to look at how many units are in typical drinks and their calorie content too!

We had a great turnout with over 70 adults and children taking part over the two hour event, you can see pictures taken during the event online. look Ú http://goo.gl/iWOsPk Stoptober The team was out and about in September raising awareness of the national Stoptober campaign. We were highlighting the support that is available to smokers who want to reduce the amount of tobacco they smoke and encouraging them to challenge themselves to go smoke free for thirty days! Top tips for Liver Health: Our livers play a big part in ensuring we live healthy lives, but they can be damaged by the over consumption of alcohol, among other things, and this can lead to liver disease.

Our Health Messages Officer Helen Green has some tips for you to help keep you’re liver health this winter!

Eat well and exercise regularly – If you are overweight you increase your risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease And remember, always give yourself at least two booze-free days a week helps your liver to recover!

Healthy Halloween Snacks Our Health Team took part in various Halloween themed activities and events where we were highlighting healthier alternative treats to the usually chocolate and sweets that contain a Helen.G@c3sc.org.uk lot of sugar, which can be harmful to your health. We tocreated find outghoulish more popcorn hands, with natural, non-toffee popcorn, creepy caterpillars with green grapes and kebab sticks and banana ghosts!

Zumba Classes Our Health team has been working to establish new fitness classes in our community and they have organised some free Zumba sessions in St John Lloyds Primary School in Trowbridge to help the community catch the fitness bug! STOP SMOKING WALES Make Quitting Smoking Your New Year Resolution!

The New Year is a perfect time to quit smoking. Apart from the health benefits and confidence quitting will give you, by next Christmas you will have saved over £2000 (if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day).

NHS Stop Smoking Wales provides a FREE seven week service to help smokers to quit. A friendly Advisor will discuss products available free on prescription that can really help during those tough few weeks after your quit date. During the sessions with your Advisor you will discuss withdrawal symptoms, coping with cravings, coping with stress and how to prevent relapse. LEARNING Macmillan Coffee Morning – Trowbridge Primary School Success!

The pupils and parents of Trowbridge Primary came together after school on 23rd September to decorate cakes in readiness for the Macmillan’s ‘World’s biggest coffee morning’, on Wednesday 24th. Our Family Liaison Officer, Rachel Brydon played a key role in the organisation of the event, through getting the parents involved, and delivery of the event, as she lead the workshop where the pupils decorated their cakes.The pupils were creative and brilliantly behaved and did an outstanding job in decorating over 200 cakes! Not only did they look delicious but they were a hit during the coffee morning itself.

As a result of the sale of the pupil decorated cakes the school raised a truly amazing £87.32 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Well done to everyone who took part, the pupils, the parents and the teachers and support staff from Trowbridge Primary School who supported the cake sale and who donated on the day!

As a result of the success of the Coffee Morning the school is now considering a monthly coffee morning and will be advertising their first date soon!

Community had the chance to study The Importance of Play in their child’s development.

The course, delivered by Adult Community Learning, proved popular with those who attended and all then signed up to take part in the follow up course, called Play and Child Development. Both courses took place in Glan Yr Afon Primary School, and we are grateful for their support.

Jamie Gauci is a local volunteer from the Llanedeyrn area who began a four week placement as a Communication and Administration Assistant with ECLP, after hearing about the placement from his Mother, who is a ECLP Community Champion.

Jamie had been looking for a way to realise his dream of becoming involved with the Mental Health support sector and by working with ECLP Communities First he is closer to reaching that goal. By working with us Jamie has improved his knowledge of Microsoft Office software and office equipment. He has learnt more about how the Third Sector in Cardiff works and how to develop projects in partnership with other people.

As a result Jamie, with ECLP’s support, organised a three week drum taster session for people suffering from stress or low moods. He has also made contact with Mind, The Mental Health Charity, where

Jamie’s Story he will volunteer to get closer to his goal of working with people with Mental Health needs.

Jamie has also been attending a training course we have organised, which further strengthened his knowledge of the Third Sector, the credits earned from completing it will contribute to any university application. ECLP also arranged for Jamie to attend Mind’s Mental Health First Aid training course.

Jamie said of his time with us “I loved volunteering with the ECLP team. They were all really friendly and supported me to develop my skills and confidence in the workplace. I think the placement and the training I have had has put me in a good position to go on to study psychology at university and to volunteer with a Mental Health based charity”.

Want to volunteer like Jamie? Then ECLP Needs You! We are looking to recruit some volunteers to help us deliver some of our projects while also giving our community members a chance to gain some experience to add to their CV’s or just a chance to meet new people and to give something back to the community. We are happy to provide references and certificates for our committed volunteers, as proof of their hard work to future employers.

Unfortunately the positions are only available to those living within our Cluster (Rumney, Llanrumney, Trowbridge, St Mellons, Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn). Bus fare (£3.60) can be covered for those traveling to and from a location within our Cluster, for the purpose of these placements. For all tasks we ask our volunteers to carry out, clear instruction and in-house training will be given.

These are some of the roles we are looking to recruit at the moment:

• Scrapbooking Volunteer

• Food Co-Op Volunteers

PROSPERITY Communicating Confidently with ECLP’s Help ECLP Communities First, the Lift Programme and Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA) worked together with local and national employers to host the East Cardiff Recruitment Fair. The fair gave residents of East Cardiff and beyond the opportunity to speak to a range of employers, such as the Welsh Government, Royal Navy, Drivers Direct, First Source Solutions and many more, all of who had jobs available that attendees could apply for on the day. As well as employer’s, service providers like ECLP Communities First and CCHA’s Money Advice Team about what help and support they can access in their community!

On the day around 100 people from East Cardiff and the surrounding areas came along to see what was on offer. Many applied for jobs on the day and seven people actually walked out with a job on the same day!

The Fair was organised in part by the ECLP Communities First Prosperity team who run a range of activities that are aimed at helping people in the ECLP community to get into employment or training.

16 - 24? Not in Work, Education or Training? We Can Help!

Do you live in East Cardiff, Llanedeyrn or Pentwyn, aged 16-24 and looking for EMPLOYMENT? Why not attend the St Mellon’s Employment drop-in held every Wednesday, between 1pm 3pm, at the St Mellons Community Education Centre and/or Trowbridge Employment Club held every Thursday 10am to 3pm at the Trowbridge Community Centre.

Come along if you’re ready for work or feel you need to address any barriers to get employment.

We will support you the best we can.

We have several successful stories of young people obtaining Jobs within a short space of time. One young person had been attending for 3 weeks before finding employment, their journey consisted of amending their CV, identifying the right Job to match their skill set and then apply. Would you like to learn more about computers?

Do you have difficulty using the internet for shopping, keeping in touch with friends or family, applying or searching for jobs, using email or anything else? We are looking to set up Computer Clubs in your area to help people overcome any barriers they have in using Computers and the internet. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Success at the Llanrumney HERE ALL WEEK! We had a great time running our Llanrumney HERE ALL WEEK! The project sees us organising a week of special events and activities in one of our communities to raise awareness of the work we do there throughout the year.

We started the Llanrumney HERE ALL WEEK! off by popping in to the Siloam Baptist Church’s Coffee morning on Monday. We are always glad to have an opportunity to spend some time here on a Monday morning as it gives us a great opportunity to talk to a range of community members over a friendly cup of coffee and there’s always some great food too! Find out more about Siloam’s Coffee Mornings here: http://goo.gl/PGlPoV On Tuesday we had a cluster of different activities running from the Llanrumney Hub. Our

communication officer was there raising awareness of the Stoptober campaign, while Helen, from the health team, was conducting Add to Your Life surveys. The Add to Your Life survey is a simple, free online test that identifies what your health risks might be and gives you some advice about what you can do about them.

She was there supporting the job club that runs at the Llanrumney Hub every Tuesday 9am – 1pm. We also organised for a CV workshop to take place after the job club so that community members could get expert help to turn their CV into a powerful tool in their employment search.

Later on in the week we organised a Baby First aid

training course on Thursday and a ‘Good Food Friday’ at the John Reynolds Centre.

The ‘Good Food Friday’, organised in partnership with the Llanrumney Forum, was a great success, with over 60 parents and children taking part.

Community Champions Want to be an ECLP Community Champion?

Our Community Champions help us to spread the word about the exciting events and activities that we organise across the cluster. To be a Champion you just need a bit of enthusiasm and a willingness to share our posters and information with friends, family and neighbours either online, over the phone or through social media. By being a Champion you can get information about upcoming events and contact Ú

activities before anyone else and opportunities for volunteering or support.

In the New Year, there will be monthly meetings where Champions will have a chance to meet up, pick up materials adverting ECLP activities and to have a friendly catch up over a tea and coffee! Interested?
