- Laugarnes

Laugarnes

The aim for this project was to take an old costal neighbourhood in ReykjavĂk and make it better in some way. The neighbourhood is partly residential and part industrial harbour and it also has a big natural area with archealogical sites. The assignment was threefold. The first part was analizing the area, the second part was making suggestions for change and the final part was taking one area of the suggestions and developing it further.

The main idea for the area was to create a chain of attractions along the coastline and to change an old industrial harbour site into a car free residential area. The new neighbourhood would have great connections to the coastline and easy access to Laugardalur wich is one of Reykjavíks biggest green areas.

This area of Reykjavik is where the fishermen used to lay out their saltcod to dry and it was the biggest fish industry area in Iceland in the 1920´s. During world war II Laugarnes had the biggest army barrack area in Reykjavík called Laugarnes kampur. In my design I wanted to connect the history with the new neighbourhood. I used the barrack shape on the roofs of the carparking basement. The houses sit in the barrack shaped roofs and they shape the area.

Strætó

Because there are no streets i decided to create areas, each with special characteristic features, wich the houses lie next to. Each area lies in the same direction and are named after the main fishing areas in wich the fishers used to catch their fish. Variety of housing is available in the area, small row houses to apartment buildings. To make the view over the industrial area more pleasing I suggest rooftop garden with greenhouses for the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The idea is to have plenty of green space in a highly populated area.

This small area next to Reykjavík harbour used to be a repair site for ships. My objective was to create a neighbourhood with plenty of green spaces, with a great view overlooking the harbour and onward to mount Esja.

Access for everyone

-Access for everyone The assignment was to make the entrance to the school wheelchair accessable. My suggestion is to use the architecture of the existing building to make a nice area for the students outside of the school, with more vegetation, benches and a bicycle rack. The entrance will be equipped both with stairs and a wheelchair ramp.

Moomin Playground

- Adventures in the playground My inspiration for this playground came from the adventures of the Moomins. The center of the playground represents the ocean. Around the ocean there is the seashore and some bridges. At the south end of the playground you find a magical forest where the children can sit on treestumps for outdoors education. At the north end of the building there are boatshaped vegetable gardens where the children can grow their own vegetables. Surrounding the ocean is a walking/bicycle path.

The inspiration for this project came from the ancient japanese art of origami. The pattern in the paving is from origami folds and all the garden elements are inspired by origami as well. This garden is wheelchair accessible.

Landscape assessment

Suggested changes

Ro

The objective for this project was to analize the current situation of this old vacation area in Borgarfjรถrรฐur, Iceland and to create a new vision for the area. My vision was to create a new kind of vacation spot where artists, designers and musicians would be able to rent a house to work on their ideas. They would work on their projects for 3-6 months. Their activities would bring others to the site and therefore bring new life to this old vacational area. Car traffic will be minimalized by new roads and Moloks would be used for garbage. New walking paths, camping area and fireplaces as well as hidden playspaces will drag people outside of their cottages to enjoy the magnificent landscape.

Example of an area

Various hidden playing areas are placed in the area. For example this music bridge. Children tend to run their hands across the bars of a bridge while they cross it. The hollow steel bars of the music bridge differ in length. Therefore they make sounds like a harp when small fingers run along them.
