Mrphpak; Sports, as we all know, provides entertainment. For generations, people engaged in sports to usher happiness in to their lives, making them healthy. At times, games were performed in honour of gods. Sports that emerged as a past-time many years ago, has now evolved in to being a more complexed, competitive and a highly lucrative field. Yet, there is no defeat for the argument that sports does entertain. However complexed it has become, sports still make people happy. Whatever the rivalries are, the game cheers up everyone. That infact is a remarkable characteristic of sports; to indulge is a guaranteed way to keep you happy. A career too, needs to usher in happiness in to our lives. While being rewarding, it shall also be entertaining. As advocated by many, a successful career is not only about material gains. If a person’s happiness index is also enhanced by his or her career that certainly will be a better career path. To that extent, there emerges a good combination in sports which can be both rewarding and entertaining. A world of sports is out there, with many career choices, options and opportunities.

Love for the game
that gave wings to
fly high Ranjan Madugalle delivers a clear verdict for youth to ‘enjoy’, ‘work hard’ and ‘play’ the sport they are engaged in for success as “barriers” exist only in the mind. Interviewed and narrated by Sharlene De Chickera, Nirojini Kanapathipillai and Nijanthan Jaykumar.
Ranjan Senerath Madugalle Ranjan Senerath Madugalle is the Chief Match Referee of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He has been an international Match Referee for a considerable period of time and has carried out his duties with responsibility and integrity. He was Head Prefect of Royal College, and captained the College team in their centenary match against S. Thomas’ College in 1979. He had the distinction of winning the coveted ‘School Boy Cricketer of the Year’ award in the same year. He was an integral part of the Sri Lanka cricket team in its formative years as a Test nation and was appointed the Captain of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team in 1988.

Q: What factors influenced your entry into the world of sports? I wouldn’t say ‘factors’. I think it was a gradual course. I started playing cricket when I was a kid and like any youngster my passion was to play more of it. So my career really started with my initial love for the game and the thrill of discovering and liking the sport. When I was a young Sri Lanka was not a Test playing country but playing for Sri Lanka was always my goal. After a while I discovered that I was good at it and the process took over. Sri Lanka has a well-structured cricket programme and from under 12 to First XI my progression took place systematically. I also used to play tennis and table tennis whilst at school but cricket held a special interest for me.
Q: In selecting a sport how would a young person know that he/ she has made the correct choice? He or she has to try the sport out and discover its appeal. It is only then that you will know if you are good at it and enjoy it. It is also then that you discover if you have the skill for it. It is the same as studies. When you are young, you take a whole gamut of subjects. But as you grow and mature you select the subjects you are good at and you love. So in principle it is the same, whether you chose a sport, a career or a course of study.
Q: What signs were there to indicate to you that there was a career ahead in sports? I did not have that in mind until I was at least 19. Because, when I started playing cricket, we were not a Test playing nation as stated before. We became a Test playing nation only in 1981 and I played in our Inaugural Test Match in 1982.
However, I first represented my country in 1979, whilst I was still in school. By the age of 20 I was employed, but the option of choosing sports as a career opened out to me after we were conferred Test status.
through the school cricket system and the club cricket structure. If a person is skillful and good and the breaks come his way, opportunities exist. That’s where his chosen career begins.
Q: Is the current milieu and scenario totally different?
Q: What career opportunities/ different career paths exist in sports?
Completely and totally different. In a modern context, when you are 15 or 16 there is a path that you can follow. Take for example a child who believes that he wants to play cricket, with the blessings of his parents. If that is where his expertise lies, he doesn’t have to go into the unknown. There is a path provided
I will confine it to cricket. However, it is quite similar in other sports internationally. The biggest change that I see from the time I played cricket and now is that those who played cricket and retired from
Pinnacle
the game can still continue to be in the game, through different roles. In the good old days, once you retire there would not be an opportunity to be involved in cricket, as it was not developed as it is now. A person who has stopped playing competitive cricket can now get involved in the management aspect of cricket or be involved as a commentator or become a coach or an umpire or a curator or like myself, an international referee. These are professions by themselves, where you can make a life – like a doctor or a lawyer or a free-lance-writer.
Q: In your opinion what barriers if any, prevent youth from pursuing a career in sports? I don’t see barriers as such. I see barriers only in the mind. If at all, the odd barriers such as facilities, correct nutritional values, treatment and medicine in terms of recovery exist, but these barriers are also being broughtdown fast. In my view if anyone wants to get involved in sports the opportunities are there. One only has to take a look at the composition of the Sri Lanka cricket team as an example. We see a cross section of schools being represented. Demographics of that differ to what it was 30 years ago. This shows how broad based cricket has become and how barriers have diminished with living examples of that. If any young person wants and aspires to be a sportstar, he or she has enough role-models to follow.
Q: Who have been your rolemodels? In a Sri Lankan context my role model has been Anura Tennakoon, who has been a player that I admired. He had flawless technique and it was a privilege to play alongside him in my early years of playing cricket for my country. In
You must have a very solid stance about life and values. When you have this as a base if you fail you go back to your basic stance, if it works you expand on it. This applies not only to sports but also to life. If you don’t have that solid foundation and stance, you don’t know how to crosscheck. When you are on the wave you will go with it, when you are flopping you won’t know how to address it an international context it was Sunil Gavaskar whose record speaks for itself.
Q: What is your advice to aspiring young cricketers? Play for a club that has good standards/ facilities and will give you the opportunity to play. An 18-year old’s job is to go and play and not to be on the bench. It is like a student who goes to the best school or the best tutor but does not get an opportunity to sit for an exam. Why would he do it then? Another advice is that nothing comes easy and one must be prepared to work long hours. One must also learn to take in their stride success and failure as that is part of sport.
Q: What factors are important to carve out a career in sport? A: As I said earlier, in cricket or in any other sport the fundamentals are the same. You must love the sport and have a passion for it. That is where you will not grudge the long-hard hours that you have
put in. That’s what drives you. The next thing is you must have a very solid stance about life and values. When you have this as a base if you fail you go back to your basic stance, if it works you expand on it. This applies not only to sports but also to life. If you don’t have that solid foundation and stance, you don’t know how to cross-check. When you are on the wave you will go with it, when you are flopping you won’t know how to address it. It is also important to respect the sport you play. Always consider that the sport is much bigger than the individual. In doing so, you must respect its laws, its officials, the governance and your opponents, as much as you respect your team-mates. If not for all these factors Sport would not exist. So it is important for one to look at all this in a holistic way. Finally, it is important to realise that you have only a period of time to contribute and embellish the sport you are lucky to serve. Careers
Sports are for
everyone!
By Sharlene De Chickera and Nirojini Kanapathipillai
A career in sports is a refreshing concept for many. The thrill of competing in various events is more than what you may win in a competition. When such thrill becomes a part of your career as well, it indeed will be refreshing. Unlike what you may perceive, sports have no barriers of entry. The passion for sports drives the hidden sports person in you. It is amazing to note how individuals are motivated by their love for the sports; extent to which they go to realize their dreams, despite many obstacles. It is often said that in sports, what matters is your capability; your own strength. It is not about how good the others are; not even about how weak your opponents may be. Sports certainly rise above many differentiating factors in ordinary life such as your family, village or school background, financial abilities or how politically or otherwise influential you are. When you rise above such irrelevant differences with a pure passion for the sport you love, there will be a world of opportunities for you to gain success in your life.
Careers
This is true for even those who are differently – abled.
“I want the world to know that a person from a village can come into limelight and win in spite of obstacles and challenges. Even if we have a disability we can compete professionally in athletics and bring recognition to Sri Lanka”
EDEX Magazine is proud to note of some Sri Lankan athletes who have outshone Indumathie Karunathilake many others in athletics Feeling elevated about her A winning attitude can despite not being fully achievements, she said “I want the world overcomes many obstacles able-bodied. Dreams that changed course All athletes are equals Indumathie Karunathilake, is a star sprinter, who has a world record under her belt, a winning smile and an attitude to match. She returned from the Disabled Athletes Meet held in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, held in April, striking three Golds. She is an example of how a disability will not get in the way of one’s performances, achieving high standards and winning medals. Having studied at Morawaka Maha Vidyalaya, Indumathie has worked hard and trained well, like an able-bodied athlete would do to better her timings, and distance in long-jump. She has won Gold medals for 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump events at the recently concluded International Disabled Athletics Meet in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. She has worked at Re-hab Lanka, where her colleague Mr. Premadasa Dissanayake facilitated her move in to athletics while offering her a job as well. She is now working as a Machine Operator at a leading garment manufacturer in Sri
Her sentiments are echoed by D.M. Kumudhu Priyanka, who also competes in the same three events. She lost her arms and sight in one eye due to a bomb blast in Buttala, her home-town. Though her path was set to start A/L classes having secured 6Ds and 4Cs at the O/Ls held in December 2004, her life turned around and she had to cope with disability. “I wanted to study further and look after my family, but was unable to do so. I did not give up on life and I continued my athletics in spite of physical disability. As such I was able to participate in my first Disabled National Games in 2005, and never looked back”, she said. Being computer literate she is hopeful that her skill in IT will further empower her life. In 2006 she took part in the International Disabled Athletics Meet in Malaysia, coming 2nd in the 100 meters event. In 2010 she established a world record in T-45 - 200 meters event at International Disabled Athletics Meet in Guangzhou, China which is still unbroken. “I have suffered a lot and come to this position. I have a positive attitude to life,” she said.
2008. He is thankful that his colleagues did not let his talent lie dormant and encouraged him to run and compete. He started running for the Army as a disabled athlete in 2008, and has not looked back since then. He won the 400 meters event and was placed second in the 200 metres event at the local Disabled Athletics Meet in 2010. And in the same year, he gained international exposure in a meet in China in Guangzhou, coming 1st place in the 400 meters and finishing 7th in the 200 meters events. Being selected, Sanjaya also is aiming to bring glory to Sri Lanka through the London Para-Olympics. From being an O/L drop-out to an athletic star, Sanjaya’s story is an inspiration to those who create their own destiny with a positive attitude and right encouragement in spite of being ‘differently-abled’. These athletes’ lives are examples that in spite of being differently-abled, how the thrill of victory or agony of defeat can be treated as two ‘equal imposters’ and how one can overcome hurdles to achieve success in life.

sports medicine
Careers in
By Major General (Retd) Dr. C. Thurairaja, usp
Sports medicine is one of the fastest growing areas of health care because health workers who specialize in sports medicine help many “regular” people as well as athletes. Sports medicine focuses on improving body’s performance, recovering from injury and preventing future injuries. It is concerned with athletic conditioning and nutrition, treatment and prevention of athletic injuries, and improvement of athletic performance. Primarily, sports medicine involves active individuals who participate in physical activities. This does not limit the scope to traditional athletes, but include ‘weekend warriors’, in other words, persons who exercise or do recreational activities and sport during holidays or weekends, industrial/ occupational workforce or any other active individual.
Opportunities in sports medicine Sports medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty. Sports medicine ‘team’ includes not only doctors qualified as Sports Medicine Physicians and Sports Psychologists but also doctors of other specialist disciplines and sports medicine trained paramedical and allied support service persons including trainers, fitness instructors and physical therapists. There are many careers in sports medicine for those who do not want be
doctors but wish to care for athletes and other ordinary citizens such as Sports Physiotherapists, Sports Masseurs, Exercise Physiologist, etc. Also, there are positions for coaches, Physical Education Trainers, etc. The list goes on expanding as sports medicine professionals now treat not only career sports persons but those who participate in sports just for fun or want to get better results from exercise programmes, patients who suffered injuries and want to regain full functions and disabled people who want to increase their mobility.
Paths to careers in sports medicine With many different career options, selection of a career path in the field of sports medicine shall be a decision based on your interests, educational goals and the environment that you want to work in. Many careers in this field require degrees or certifications. Career opportunities such as Sports Medicine Physicians and Sports Psychologists require specialist certifications related to sports medicinal field, in addition to general medical degrees. Special certifications related to sports medicinal field in addition to general qualifications are also required for positions such as Sports Physiotherapists, Sports Masseurs, Athletic Trainers, Exercise Physiologist, etc. Recognized training courses and certification programmes are available in many countries such as Australia, UK, US, Canada etc. In Sri Lanka, Sports Medicine Association and Post Graduate Institute of Medicine of University of Colombo conduct sports medicine courses that provide accreditations. For any doctor in the government sector, accreditation from the latter is mandatory to enter in to the filed of sports medicine. If you’re interested in sports medicine, consider volunteering with the medical personnel that assist your school sports teams. You can observe the work they do and learn how to train for a career in this field. (Writer is President, Asian Federation of Sports Medicine and a Fellow Member of International Federation of Sports Medicine; Senior Fellow of Post Graduate Institute of Medicine of University of Colombo; Consultant Radiologist and Sports Physician.)

Careers in
Sports By Nalin Goonewardene
There are plenty of sports related careers that do not require playing at all Sports is like war, where techniques, equipment, intelligence, training and hard work are active components of defeating the ‘opposition’. Everyone wants to see their national side or representatives defeat whoever they meet. They want to know who these people are and how they perform. Today, sports are no more a leisure time activity of a privileged few. It is an exciting, dynamic, highly competitive and lucrative industry open to everyone, where both competitors and those who help them can earn ‘mega bucks’. Here are some examples of annual incomes of a few well known competitors from May 2010, according to reliable sources. Tiger Woods golf Kobe Bryant basketball Roger Federer tennis
$75 million $53 million $47 million.
In terms of highest earners, the 30th on the list is Wayne Rooney, a football player, with an income over $24 million. And there are many more. However, not everyone can be a highly talented sportsperson, so if your ‘skill’ is elsewhere, there are many opportunities to earn a good living and enjoy yourself at the same time, in the world of sports. Top competitors need people to help maintain their performance, look after their physical and mental well being, manage their earnings, find sponsors etc. There are many career opportunities in fields such as Sports Management, Sports Marketing, Sports Finance and Sports Therapy where average monthly salaries can be extremely high. Away from the competitor, the public want to know what is going on, so there are
There are many career opportunities in fields such as Sports Management, Sports Marketing, Sports Finance and Sports Therapy where average monthly salaries can be extremely high specific opportunities in sports reporting (that can include overseas trips), and various aspects of sports management. An A.T. Kearney study says the global sports industry is worth $480-$620 billion including infrastructure construction, sporting goods, licensed products and live sports events. Closer to home, the BRIC developing countries are moving fast forward too. Since 2000, Russia's spending on sports rose more than 53% annually, China's by 20%, India's by 17% and Brazil's by 7% and these trends are set to continue. As with the IT industry, sports ‘market’ or ‘business’ has grown to massive proportions with the development of world wide communications and will continue growing as more of the world comes ‘online’. This trend will hit Sri Lanka sooner than we think. Cricket will not be the only game in which we excel. The raw talent lying dormant will have a chance to
immerge. Sports promoters and franchises as well as extended television coverage will drag Sri Lanka into the limelight – or we will fall out of the international scene with negative consequences. If you are athletically gifted, then you are destined to have a lucrative career in sports, provided you work at it. If not, there are plenty of sports related careers that do not revolve around the field of play and do not require playing a sport at all. Your knowledge, enthusiasm and interest together with a university degree or better an MBA or MSc in a relevant field will lead you to the best careers. Different courses will educate and prepare you in subjects varying from human anatomy, nutrition, and physiology through media and advertising to specific demands of leadership in sports management. The business of Sports in the United States is estimated to be $213-billion annually, which is twice the size of their car industry and seven times the size of their movie industry. The winds of change will come to Sri Lanka, so it is time now to prepare yourself to ride the waves it will produce.

IT
An opportunity worth chasing Business Architect By Shriwanthi Amarasinghe
The idea that IT is something separate from business is no longer there now. Today, upper management in most companies recognizes that technology is not just an essential tool to achieve success, but it really drives the way companies chase their business goals. So, to help combine technology and business procedures, a new type of an opportunity known as the Business Architect is emerging. Forrester Research analyst Alex Cullen, who researches on IT strategy and organizational planning, has reportedly said that "Business architecture is about making sure that whole business holds together. It is a role built around business
planning, pointing out opportunities to utilize IT more effectively in sales, customer service and other key areas. Unlike the old-style enterprise architect whose role is to establish technology to meet business objectives, a business architect is a member of the business organization reporting to the CEO and shaping high-level company tactics with technology in mind.
Business architecture is about making sure that whole business holds together decision with information when they want to choose the technology that best serves their needs and have the freedom to walk away from one technology to the next thing.
A successful business architect shall have an unfathomable knowledge of a company's business model and workflow than an average enterprise architect.
In some organizations, enterprise architects with the right experience and nature may solely take on the business architect role, whether or not they change titles.
The job of a business architect is to support managers to make the best

Ecosystem Services in Ecuador
The city of Quito offers a leading example of the potential for developing markets that channel economic demand for water to upstream areas from which it is supplied. In Quito’s case, the availability of water for the city of about 1.5 million inhabitants and surrounding areas depends on the conservation of protected areas upstream, with 80 per cent of the water supply originating in two ecological reserves, the Cayambe-Coca (400,000 ha) and the Antisana (120,000 ha). The Fund for the Protection of Water – FONAG – was established in 2000 by the municipal government, together with a non-governmental organization, as a trust fund to which water users in Quito contribute. FONAG uses the proceeds to finance critical ecosystem services, including land acquisition for key hydrological functions.
Green
Demand and supply The users include farmers, hydropower companies, industries and households, who pay differentiated rates depending on use. The largest share of payments comes from the Quito water utility (Metropolitan Enterprise of Water and Sewer Systems in Quito – EMMAP-Q) which contributes 1 per cent of monthly water sales. Hydropower companies make fixed annual payments, as does the Cerveceria Andina brewery. Farmers drawing water through irrigation also contribute. The fund held more than US$ 7 million at the end of 2009 (up from US$ 3 million in 2005) and invested about US$ 0.8 million in 2008. Administration costs are limited to between 10 and 20 per cent of total expenditures.
environmental education, forestry, and the river basin management training. These projects and programmes are undertaken with the participation of different community actors, local authorities, educational institutions, and governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
FONAG finances both watershed management projects in micro river valleys and longer-term programmes (at least 20 years in duration) oriented towards communication,
FONAG has served to inspire the development of similar schemes elsewhere in Latin America and beyond. For example, in South Africa, where water forms one of the
Benefits FONAG is contributing to securing present and future water supplies for Quito. Through the fund, more than 65,000 ha of watersheds are now under improved management. Upstream farmers receive support for watershed protection programmes, as opposed to cash payments. More than 1800 people are estimated to receive increased economic benefits associated with watershed management and conservation.
greatest constraints on development, a recently-launched initiative in the Maloti Drakensberg Mountains aims to implement a payments for watershed services programme, with support from UNEP and the BASF Social Foundation. This initiative will use payments from downstream users to support the restoration of dongas, and the improvement of grazing and veld fire management regimes in order to reduce sedimentation and increase the quality and quantity of water flows. In so doing, employment will be generated for local households and the productive potential of agricultural activities should increase. In sum, FONAG is one of a growing number of initiatives that bring together different stakeholders in the creation of innovative mechanisms to channel economic demand for water to areas critical for the supply, in the process improving livelihoods and generating employment, while investing in key ecosystem services.

Be Inspired By Nalin Goonewardene
Exceptional human achievement always inspires ordinary people to achieve great things. After all, exceptional people were ordinary people to start with, so their examples trigger new thoughts and ideas of what is possible, if one tries and works hard at it, despite obstacles encountered. Let's look at some of these exceptional people in the field of athletics. There have been many world champions and record breakers who have thrilled spectators over the years. But four of them stand head and shoulders above the rest, because of examples they set and impacts they have had on the world of athletics. They had to overcome established thinking, even ridicule, to develop a capability not available at the time, be dedicated and work hard. As such they inspired generations of sportsmen and women all over the world to believe they can do it too, and thereby achieve success.
Their stories may inspire you to rise above all around you to achieve great things in your life.
Jesse Owens Owens was an Afro-American who delivered groceries and loaded freight cars as a boy in 1930’s just before World War II. His passion for running was recognised by his school coach who allowed him to practice before school because he worked at a shoe-repair shop after school. Through dedicated training, Owens first became noticed when he equalled the world record for 100 yards and won a creditable long jump while at high school. Though he enjoyed athletic success, he did not receive a sports scholarship, so had to work parttime to pay for school. When he travelled with the team, he had to eat at "blacks-only" restaurants and stay at "blacks-only" hotels. In 1936, Owens went to the Olympics in Berlin with the US team. Adolf Hitler intended to use the games to show the world their supremacy and to
promote concepts of "Aryan racial superiority" while depicting ethnic Africans as "inferior". To everyone's surprise, Owens was the most successful athlete at the games winning gold medals in 100yds, 200yds, long jump and 4 x 100 relay, as a last minute replacement for a Jewish-American sprinter to whom the Germans objected. His performance was not equalled until Carl Lewis won gold medals in the same events at 1984 Olympics, 48 years later. Despite his fantastic achievements, Owens was not recognised in his own country during his heyday. It was only in the 1970s (aged 57) that he began to be given accolades in the USA. His mental attitude to take part in 1936 games, then win so emphatically inspired generations of Afro-American youngsters who believed they can do it too, which has brought them to be the leading athletes in the world today.

Roger Bannister Bannister was an English academic who started running in 1946 aged 17. Inspired by Sydney Wooderson, who set the world mile record of 4min 6.4sec in 1947 Bannister decided he would do better. As a methodical person he considered his goal, his life, his constitution, and went about preparations, his way. He did not follow the established training methods current in 1954, but developed his own, specially a sprint finish, as Wooderson. He firmly believed he could break the magic Four
Minute Mile barrier which he worked out required not just training but also the right track and appropriate weather conditions and in 1954 he achieved this, with a time of 3 mins 59.4 seconds.

He showed that anyone could do it and inspired a whole raft of British middle distance runners such as Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and the outstanding Seb Coe, who received a knighthood and is now chairman of 2012 London Olympics. Bannister who passed out as a doctor also received a knighthood later in life.
Dick Fosbury Fosbury, an American, is one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. He completely revolutionized high jump event, by inventing a unique "back-first" technique, now known as the Fosbury Flop. While at high school he had difficulty using the ‘straddle method’ which was the dominant high jumping technique at the time. He began to experiment with other ways of doing high jump. His high school helped by replacing its wood chip landing
pit with a softer material, so he could land safely. Soon, American high schools followed the colleges in acquiring foam rubber elevated landing pits. Fosbury continued to refine his technique, developing a curved, J-shaped approach run up to increase his speed, which also helped increase his elevation. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he won the gold medal and set a new Olympic record at 2.24 meters. Despite initial scepticism results proved his technique which is now adopted by all high jumpers.
Ed Moses There has not been a ‘technician’ to equal Ed Moses in the field of sport – ever. An Afro-American track and field athlete, he won gold medals in 400 m hurdles at 1976 and 1984 Olympics. Between 1977 and 1987, Moses won 107 consecutive finals (122 consecutive races) and set the world record in his event four times, not losing a race for a record nine years, nine months and nine days, against the world’s best. His secret lay in two things – focussed dedication to 400 hurdles (even though he could have excelled in other events) and a technique he developed to take 13 strides between hurdles using the same leading leg all the way around the track.
Be inspired by the achievements of these four athletes, to identify your specific skills, find how you can excel in them, work hard and not give up, to achieve your own success.
