There have been two marketing campaigns lately that have peeked my interest. The first was one I hadn't actually noticed until I saw an article in a magazine that I thought was pretty cool. Dentyne has their “More Face Time" campaign. The idea is to get off the computer and get back into the real world. Hence the quote "Face Time". They've even gone so far as to put a 3-minute timer on their website to ensure that you don't waist anymore time online than you should. Which is a must for me because my whole world revolves around my laptop. These commercials have made me rethink my whole keeping in touch via facebook attitude, and realize that maybe I should just get in the car and go see my girlfriends. Instead of posting pics of the kids, maybe I should just schedule a day to go visit. When a campaign really makes you stop & think, "Hmm. Good Point." It's obviously accomplished something. Now for Dentyne, this campaign makes sense. Kissing, close up chats with friends and basically real life living outside the computer are all things that would constitute picking up a pack of gum. Dentyne is going to obviously benefit from more people taking face to face versus instant messaging. It's a great campaign, if only I would of thought of it. That brings me to the other campaign that has caught my attention, Hulu's very funny and entertaining Superbowl ad with Alec Baldwin. It is funny, but also a little disturbing. It is basically saying TV and the computer are “rotting our brain” This is why I face much guilt in how much my life does revolve around the web. And of course I allow my kids to watch much more TV than I would ever care to admit. So when Alec Baldwin and the folks at Hulu come up with a campaign claiming that Aliens are behind TV, it is indeed turning our brains too much and is all part of an evil ploy to take over the world. I was once again reminded of my need for more “face time” Funny? YES. I love a Baldwin as much as the next gal. But does it make me want to visit the site and waist even more time watching TV and surfing the web? I am afraid it does. So two campaigns both banking on how much we time we spend in front of the TV and computer. One offers a solution to the "Too Much" epidemic, one promises too make it worse. What’s a girl to do? Maybe I will do some more research and then watch another documentary about television and if there is time I will attempt some “face time”. But I am sure I will be to busy…..

Pro Tips Jeremy Ruiz has worked in the Amarillo area for over 20 years. He also works on a national level for Fudge USA and has represented many other companies. He is also owner of Jolz Hair Salon here in Amarillo.
TIPS & TRICKS The following are a collection of products and ideas that stylists have used on runways, shows, photo shoots, and in the salon on a daily basis. These tips & tricks are to help you recreate that salon look and feel in your own home. A lack of moisture in the air, certain styling products, and heating tools can cause hair that is dry, brittle, has static, and is unmanageable. Older dryers and irons are not as regulated as the newer ones and will burn the hair easier while you are styling at home. Also, be sure to check you dryer’s filter, as a dirty one can also cause it to burn your hair. Here comes summer! And along with the season, the gorgeous highlights we all love to put in our hair. There are some things you can do at home to help prepare your hair so it is not so easily damaged. Use shampoos that are labeled as repairing, smoothing, for chemically treated, sleek, or straightening. These products tend to be the most moisturizing.

Also, leave in conditioners are a great tool. Sprays tend to be lighter, crËmes tend to be heavier but more effective in reconstruction, and oils tend to camouflage the problem. The number one leave in conditioner out right now is Schwarzkopf Bonacure Repair Sealed Ends. When styling, in addition to the leave-in you choose, use a root lifting product combined with a normal to firm gel on the ends. If your hair is curly a straightening balm or gel will do the trick. For personalized tips feel free to drop by the salon or contact me by email or on myspace and we will be happy to get back with you! Be sure to leave your contact information on any correspondence.

Rebecca St. James' Career Balancing Act: Movie, Book & New Music
Often called the “hardest working artist in contemporary Christian music,” over her past decade of stellar career successes, Rebecca St. James is today re-defining even her own definition of the term “busy!” With music fans wondering over the past several months what ’09 holds in the way of new music from the Australian born Grammy winner, Rebecca has been fully engrossed in Hollywood over the past six month, flourishing in yet another spectrum of her creativity –acting. Her first leading role—starring in the full length production of the faith and values based film “Sarah’s Choice,” is about to wrap—awaiting only the filming on location of late winter outdoor scenes in the Midwest. Early details on the movie reveal that Rebecca’s role is by every virtue—a bold ‘departure’ for her. She portrays a single, successful young career woman faced with the unexpected news that she is pregnant—and the dramatic, life altering decision of what follows. The role is near to the heart of St. James, long an advocate of abstinence, and now making a bold creative statement through film on the pro life agenda. She noted recently: “We live in a very real world where scores of young women every day are being impacted by the heart wrenching issues and life changing choices that my character is suddenly forced to come face to face with. I feel it’s an important film with a Godly message that I am praying will profoundly touch lives.”
Full production details with release information is forthcoming. In Hollywood last week as a presenter on the film industry’s annual faith and values based “Movie Guide Awards,” Rebecca was greeted with the news from Nashville that her latest book, Pure, published this past fall by Hachette/Faithwords, has just broken the Top 10 nationally--appearing at #9 on the February CBA “Young Adult” book sales chart. Good news came too that her celebrated voice character work as “Hope the Music Box Angel” in the million plus selling VeggieTales DVD An Easter Carol is enjoying a new national promotional rollout at retail as a major '09 re-release from the creative team at Big Idea --just in time for this year's egg hunting season. In late March, Rebecca will reprise her successful “mother/daughter” SHE event/concerts—doing a short series of U.S. dates before leaving for international concerts that include a trip to the Australian homeland as a headlining artist at “EasterFest ’09,” expected to draw in excess of 10,000 concert-goers to the outdoor staging. Where’s the music? Expect news on new RSJ songs for several upcoming film soundtracks, and anticipate seeing Rebecca back in Nashville for April ‘creative writing sessions’ as well as her participation as an anchor artist on the telecast of the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards, to be broadcast April 23rd on The Gospel Music Channel.

Jars of Clay Rockets Back Onto Scene With Album April 21st
Acclaimed rock band Jars of Clay, known for its ground-breaking, intelligent music and humanitarian work worldwide, artfully explores matters of relationship and community through the songs on its tenth studio album The Long Fall Back To Earth.† The highly anticipated 14track project releases April 21 on Gray Matters/Essential Records. From the band’s earliest days to the present, innovation has marked each step of Jars of Clay’s musical journey with The Long Fall Back To Earth serving as no exception. It’s a big, lush, confident, gutsy sound that dominates the new tracks, leaving the listener with a different thought for each new story told, each new emotion conveyed. As with all previous Jars of Clay projects, it’s the lyrical content that draws listeners into a fuller appreciation of the songs. Lead vocalist/lyricist Dan Haseltine delves into the bare bones reality of the beauty and tension of relationships, and what makes them worth fighting for, a common thread that has tied everyone exposed to Jars of Clay’s music together for more than a decade. The project’s debut single, “Two Hands,” released to radio January 30, is receiving praise from programmers everywhere and is quickly shooting up the AC/CHR charts. One of the songs the band considers a cornerstone for the project as a whole, “Two Hands” deals with our inborn, yet often unspoken desire to just do more for our world, while struggling to keep our innate selfishness in check. “That song touches a very simple longing in our hearts for unity under one roof, so to speak,” Dan Haseltine says. “One side of us wants to serve Christ and love others, while the other side is concerned only with looking out for ourselves. By reconciling the sides of our heart -both good and bad -- to bring the full weight of who we are in Christ, we can use our hands to serve and love others well in a way that honors Him.” Jars of Clay, handling production duties alongside veteran producer Ron Aniello (Guster, Lifehouse, Leigh Nash), expand on the musical palette developed for its last project, Good Monsters: driving songs with more synth, beats and loops, but keeping its hard-won appreciation for rock guitars intact. The effect is a sweeping musical landscape full of detail, contrast and richness. A consistent draw on the road, Jars of Clay is already mapping tour dates in support of the album through 2009. Tour dates cities will be announced in coming weeks.

Restaurant Review
El Braceros Mexican Bar & Grill 2822 W. 6th Street (806) 220-2395 3303 Bell Street (806) 355-0889 2116 S Grand Street (806) 373-4788
In 1995 the Santillan family opened the first of three family owned restaurants on Grand street. This was the birth of an authentic Mexican restaurant known as El Bracero. Since then they have opened two other restaurants found on Bell Street and 6th Street. All locations serve first-rate Mexican food in an inviting environment. I recently had the chance to eat lunch at the 6th street location. Our meal started with the typical Mexican fare of Chips and Salsa. The chips were warm and salted just right. The salsa was so fresh, it tasted as though it were made just before coming to the table. You could taste the cilantro with every bite and felt a little kick with each mouthful. The friendly staff encourages you to deviate from the status quo, instead of an enchilada; you should try their Parrillada. It is an assortment of grilled meats served with grilled onions and roasted jalapenos. The meal serves two to three people and comes to your table on a mini grill. If you are hungry I highly recommend this for you and your friends! If you order of the lunch menu you will not be disappointed. The portions are huge and the prices are small. The waitresses are friendly and the service is quick. It is just the right place to come for lunch. Vibe: Rustic Mexican DĂˆcor. Restaurant was busy and full of chatter. Waitress was multi-tasking with duties of wait staff and bussing but kept up nicely. Pros: Freshly made authentic Mexican food. Serving sizes are ample. Food is served hot from the kitchen. Cons: Parking is very limited. You may have to park curbside.
Cocktails Chocolate martinis offer wonderful sipping pleasure. Nothing seems to inspire love like the rich taste of a decadent chocolate martini in a chilled cocktail glass. There are many ways to make a chocolate martini. You can pick your favorite spirit such as light rum, vodka or brandy as a base spirit to mix with a chocolate liqueur. If you're looking for a fruity taste, pick a flavored vodka or rum such as citrus or raspberry. For a sweeter taste, use vanilla flavored vodka or rum. To garnish, coat a rim of a martini glass or swirl chocolate syrup into a glass.

NEARFALL
Corey Stone the drummer for NearFall met me at the entrance and I followed him to the rehearsal space deep inside the labyrinth that is Western Business Park. I got out of the car and was quickly offered a beer, there is nothing like Texas hospitality.
Most of the members of the band are there already Nick Kemp/ Lead Guitar is already rattling the garage door that serves as the only sound barrier between the band and the rest of the world. I could tell immediately that people on the other side of the business park were going to be able to hear this practice session. The best part of seeing a band practice is that bands always play with the volume turned up to eleven. There is nothing in the world like really LOUD music. The type that rattles your back teeth within seconds of that first shattering chord your ears scream in pain then go to sleep and your eyes water just a little bit. It reminds me of the scene in Back to the Future when Marty plugs into Doc Brown's Stack from Hell and blows himself completely across the room. Metal sounds better loud but if you didn't know that already you might be reading the wrong magazine. You might pick up a copy of Silver though, it has some great articles you might find interesting.
The band and I talk the talk I ask the usual questions about what bands influenced them to this point. NearFall influences are deeply rooted in the Nu Metal category, This make a lot of sense because most members of NearFall are approaching thirty already on the other side, and nothing influenced almost every big band today aside from the Jonas Brother fiasco more than Nu Metal. Bands like Korn Deftones Snot and even Limp Bizkit before Fred got all 'girly' were part of one of the most exciting times in the history of
metal. As a fan of NuMetal I would have to be critical of NearFall if they didn't do a good job of what they played. Almost any band can get on a stage and play chords, sing and look cool. Thats the trouble with the local bands, and the local music scene. A lot just lack the passion that exudes from bands like NearFall. Seriously I have seen bands cover Rage Against the Machine wearing polo shirts, it was more sad than it was funny. “Eff you I wont do what you tell me” doesn't mean anything coming from a eighteen year old kid wearing a clean white polo. They ran though a quick set list and started with “South Texas Death Ride” by Union Underground I hadn't heard it in years and they crushed it, its was really nice seeing a cover band play a song that is not typically played at all. Next the band plays One Step Closer by Linkin Park. NearFall features two vocalists. Jason Nemoede and Steven Kemp both vary skill wise, much like that of Chester and Mike of Linkin Park. The sound that comes from the stacks are finally enough to knock my digital voice recorder off of the chair it was propped up on. It bears repeating, these guys are loud and I think it was the sound of the bass played by Loren Bussey that finally caused all “digital notes” for this interview to disappear. The force of the fall was enough to pop the batteries out of the back and spill onto the concrete floor of the studio.
NearFall has been together for two and a half years. They are a very family oriented band. Every member of the band is married with kids. NearFall is the only band that I know of, at least locally, that features a father and his two sons in the same band that plays extremely heavy metal. Fred Kemp/Rhythm Guitar is the father of Nick and Steven. Their families take priority over the band, always have and always will. NearFall is not looking for the pressure of creating new music. They feel that being an original band that produces original music as opposed to covers would just take to much time away from their families. The idea of eating bologna sandwiches in the back of a van is not anywhere in the future for NearFall. They are happy with were they are doing what they love with the people they enjoy. Everyone pitches in for the bands success, not just the guys on stage. Each of their wives help out with promotions on
myspace and also handle all the merchandising for the band. I asked the guys in the band what they wanted to say, as a whole in this interview, and the response was the same. SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC. Its obvious that the only way bands get on stage is if there is a need for them. The only way that a bar will hire a band is if they can fill the place Friday and Saturday nights. Go out have a good time, listen to good music, how much easier can it get? NearFall will play live on March 6,7, and 27, 28 at Boscos 2307 SW 6th Ave. NearFall will play three sets with a total of around forty songs. It is now that I would like some time to address an issue. I have seen a number of bands cover a lot of songs, none more original than one in particular performed by NearFall. If you have seen this band live you already know what I
NEA
am talking about, if you don't come out and see the coolest cover of the Cranberries “Zombie perhaps ever. I guarantee that if you appreciate good live music where the bands do an amazing job on all sides to make these songs sound great NearFall is the correct choice. So I encourage go out have fun and

Cowboy Junkies Plot New Album, Tour Two years after the Cowboy Junkies' last studio effort "At The End of Paths Taken," guitarist Michael Timmins tells Billboard.com the Canadian band is hoping to have a new album out in late 2009 or early 2010. "Right now we're just touring constantly, as we always do, and working on new songs for a new record," Timmins says. "The songs are there, it's just when we get around to completely finishing it. To us, the pluses of making a record are just mysterious. We sort of build up the songs, play them live quite a bit and then we kind of figure out how we want to approach them in the studio. And we either approach them very slowly or very quickly, depending just on circumstance and how the songs are coming about." With a nine-date spring tour due to begin March 26 in Rochester, NY (German House Theater), the Cowboy Junkies -- Timmins, Margo Timmins (vocals), Peter Timmins (drums) and Alan Anton (bass) -- are road-testing a few new songs, including "Angels in the Wilderness," "The Confession of Georgie E" and "Fairytale." "They all sound like the Cowboy Junkies," Timmins laughs. "I don't know, they're changing. With road-testing songs, you push them in a direction and then pull them back and then push them in another direction. Some of these songs I've just been playing me and Margo on acoustic guitar, and then we play them with a full band, so it's hard to know where they're going to end up." Something else happening in the Cowboy Junkies' not-so-distance future is its new and improved Web site from its own label Latent Recordings. The idea is to turn it into a one-stop shopping site for all things Cowboy Junkies and beyond. "We're about to launch it hopefully in the next month and it's going to be not only for us but also for a lot of bands in Toronto that we're working with and producing," Timmins says. "It's going to have lots of downloading capabilities, so that's sort of our next phase in trying to figure out how the music business works." Still undetermined is how the Cowboy Junkies's new CD will be released stateside. But the new buyer-friendly website may be a factor in that decision. "We're not sure there is any need to get another middle person involved," Timmins says.†"We're trying to figure that out right now. For the states, my feeling now at this point, it probably makes more sense to do a straight distribution deal rather than doing a license deal, but we haven't made a decision on that."

Joni Mitchell Hopes To Spread 'Fiddle'
With "The Fiddle and the Drum," her collaboration with the Alberta Ballet, recently documented on DVD, Joni Mitchell is looking forward to spreading the piece worldwide. "The whole thing in a certain way is out of my hands," Mitchell tells Billboard.com. "It's going to be featured at the (2010) Winter Olympics in Vancouver. We've had a request from Alabama, of all places, to play. It depends on money and a lot of things. "My art dealer spoke to someone who runs a concert hall in New York, and they said they would take it there if I appeared. I don't know how much of that there would be, but I love going with the company. They're my kids at this point. It's just been such a delight working with these people." Choreographed by Jean Grande-Maitre with Mitchell's full participation, "The Fiddle and the Drum" blends together her music (including several songs from her latest album, 2007's "Shine"), dance and war-themed images from her latest visual art project, "Green Flag Song." It was first conceived as an autobiographical piece -- deemed "a little fluffy for the times" by Mitchell -- then a sort-form ballet before growing to a 48-minute production captured on the new DVD. Most recently Mitchell and Grande-Maitre have expanded "The Fiddle and the Drum" yet again with four more songs, including her iconic "Woodstock." The full-length piece has already played in Saskatoon, rolls into Edmonton on Saturday [Feb. 21] and returns to Calgary on Feb. 26, which will be filmed for a hoped-for future DVD release. "The Fiddle and the Drum" remains the primary focus for Mitchell, who's also in the midst of treatments for Morgellons syndrome, an infectious and potentially debilitating skin condition that's put other endeavors on hold for now. "I think it's quite an interesting entertainment," she says of the ballet. "It acts like a play even though it's modular and non-linear, and people respond to it that way in the theater. It's such a joy for me. It's thrilling."
