Dating A Democrat Vs. Dating A Republican Dating app Clover conducted a study to get the skinny on the hobbies and activities that best define Republicans and Democrats this election year. Some are obvious (spoiler: the GOP likes guns), but some may surprise you. Ah, election season, a time of peace and feelings of unity among the American voting public. While politics is largely a taboo first date conversation topic, you could hardly blame someone for broaching the subject in such a politically charged atmosphere. Dating someone with strong political leanings can be tricky, though, whether they're just further from the center than you or completely across the aisle. To that end, a newer dating app called Clover analyzed data from over 700,000 users to put together a handy infographic to give you an idea of what makes both donkeys and elephants tick. To be fair, this would appear to bear out a lot of stereotypes for both parties. Dems are a bunch of pot-smoking, free-loving coffee-sipping hippies, while Republicans are all gun-toting Bible humpers. But it's not all God, guns and glory, GOP may as well stand for "Great Outdoor Pipelaying" for as much as they like boning al fresco. I don't know if it's because rural voters (with ample access to private outdoor spaces) are more likely to be Republicans, or if having sex outside is just another expression of American freedom. Either way, you may want to high thee to a Young Republican meeting once the weather warms up. Similarly, while Democrats are more likely to listen to hip-hop, it's only 23% more. The Repubs may love their steel guitar, but they apparently aren't totally opposed to 808s and drum machines, either. Dating someone with a completely different political worldview is always tough, and may be impossible if the divide is wide enough. But as long as you reach a place of mutual respect and understanding (as well as some common ground), no one has to be off the dating table this election year.

Written on Water Dr. Trigilio’s Film of the Ogallala Aquifer By Eric Muehlhausen eric@edgemonthly.com With the constant evolution of technology making our everyday lives even easier than just a week ago, we sometimes overlook the plight of resource consumption & the possibility that any of them could ever run out. The thought of not having water readily available seems like a story from some 3rd world country or the premise for a post apocalyptic blockbuster; the reality is, it’s starting to happen right here in the High Plains. It’s fairly common knowledge that the Ogallala Aquifer provides our area with the most basic of necessities, water. What may come as a surprise, however, is that we share the aquifer with 7 other states, and it provides for 40% of Texas’ statewide water consumption. Dr. Merri Lisa Trigilio took to numerous locales throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and New Mexico in search of the impact that the Ogallala Aquifer’s depletion is having on the area for her new documentary, Written on Water, “A Modern Tale of the Dry West & the Ogallala Aquifer.” The film highlights the integral role of the Ogallala Aquifer to the area, particularly with our vast reliance on the farming industry as a backbone. Though Dr. Trigilio visited many towns throughout her filming, the bulk of the film focuses on the farmers & townspeople of Olton, TX, situated nearly half way between Amarillo and Lubbock, west of Plainview. Written on Water presents an in depth look at how communities, particularly agricultural communities, are feeling the fallout from aquifer exhaustion. As the Ogallala Aquifer continues to expend its reserves, farmers have to look for new water sources, drilling new wells, or even purchasing water from neighboring communities. Other issues stem out of this decline as well. Water property rights & state policy collide as farmers vie for the necessary “agricultural ambrosia” that gives life to their crops, while local governing bodies handling water policy attempt to maintain equilibrium in the face of antiquated regulations.
There is a silver lining presented in Written on the Water however. The same technological innovations that place resource consumption in the back of the average American’s mind, has also given birth to water conservation advancements that farmers have been utilizing during the growing water shortage. New sprinkler systems with low evaporation tech, satellite imaging that analyzes plant health to better provide a gauge of when & how much water to use effectively, and optimization of water sustainability analytics are all aiding in the fight against groundwater depletion. But, there is always more that can be done. Written on Water has already been presented at numerous water conservation symposiums & conferences, as well as being chosen for screening at Texas’ only documentary film festival, Thin Line Film Festival, in Denton, TX on Feb. 19th. On March 10th, it will be shown at the Texas Leadership Roundtable on Water in Austin, TX, and subsequently the Environmental Film Festival in Washington D.C. on March 20th. Bad Boys 3 And 4 Are Happening, Here's The Latest We've been hearing talk about a potential Bad Boys III in the works at Sony for a long, long time now but it seems that all of those earlier reports only got half the story. As it turns out, the studio is actually developing both Bad Boys III, and Bad Boys IV, and today it was officially announced that the sequels have release dates. This news comes to us from The Wrap, which has gotten word from the studio about plans for two more Bad Boys installments. While at this time it's unclear who will be directing, and who will actually star, Bad Boys III has been put on the schedule for February 17, 2017 and it has been officially said that Bad Boys IV will be dropping on the big screen on July 3, 2019. This is definitely an interesting development. In June it was reported that Joe Carnahan had been hired by Sony to work on the script for Bad Boys III, and that the studio was hoping to have the film ready to possibly shoot this fall. This plan was formulated because Will Smith will soon be finishing up his work on David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and Sony wanted to make Bad Boys III an option as his next feature. Because we now know that the movie is scheduled for early 2017, it's entirely possible that this is the move that Sony is moving forward with, and that at some point Will Smith agreed to be a part of the production, potentially in addition to a third sequel. As for who will wind up directing the movie, that's a pretty big mystery at this point. The franchise launched with Michael Bay at the helm of the first two titles, but it seems like there's a distinct possibility that he won't be back for Bad Boys III and Bad Boys IV. If that turns out to be the case, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see Sony hand the reins over to Joe Carnahan as a director in addition to being a screenwriter. It's true that the guy doesn't have an amazing history with intellectual properties (the A-Team movie didn't exactly work out as well as expected), but films like The Grey and Narc have shown him to be a very capable and potentially exciting filmmaker.

Samsung Launches a New Flagship Store in Manhattan Where Nothing is For Sale Don't call Samsung 837 a pop-up shop, a brick-andmortar retailer or the global technology giant's first-ever physical store. The location, opening its doors officially today (Feb. 23) in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, has nothing for sale. Instead the three-story, glitzy "flagship" is being billed as a "cultural destination," a "digital playground" and, in the words of Samsung 837 vp and general manager Zack Overton during a press tour this week, a "sandbox for collaborators." The reality may not be that utopian, but for a hodgepodge of Samsungbranded installations, it is nothing if not impressive. The main floor is dominated by a video screen as tall as the interior -- billed as the world's largest digital display -- that extends downward into an amphitheater setup
with a performance space at its floor; Florence and the Machine played a private launch event last night (Feb. 22) for Samsung executives and select VIPs, the first in a yet-to-be-revealed planned series of concerts from both up-and-coming and established artists. An audio studio is couched by the glass walls facing the street, where the company plans to have DJs spinning and artists doing live interviews. An editing suite at the base of the stage allows engineers to quickly produce video clips from the venue's events. In the street-facing windows sits two banks of virtual reality chairs that, paired with Samsung's new VR Gear headsets, creates a fully-immersive virtual reality experience, like the only place a majority of the population is likely to have a virtually realistic experience.
If you manage to pass through the gauntlet the sensory overload within 837's main space (a publicist confirmed the building contains more than 360 individual screens), the flagship's second floor offers a reprieve, acting as part Genius Bar-style product support (for Samsung products, it should go without saying), a "chill-vibe" cafe (with no less than three kitchens powered by Brooklyn's Smorgasburg, while Stand Coffee is behind the beverages), and part Ikea catalog, with a living room-type setup that gives an impression of wandering into a model home that no one would feel very comfortable actually living in. That living room is where the company showcases its new phones, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, which were unveiled this week, which boast a much-improved camera and a water resistance so exciting that employees gleefully urge people to dunk the phone in a bowl of water. (Of course there's a dunking station.) As a standalone space, 837 is worth a brief visit, though Samsung plans to use it to host movie screenings, culinary displays, further art installations and "hosted activities" in addition to live music. However, at the moment, its actual utility is minimal unless you've got a cracked Samsung phone screen, existing almost as a future-tech museum designed to elicit "oohs" and "ahhs" while gently pushing its products in the showroom. Samsung is, unsurprisingly, singing 837's praises so far; now the only challenge left is how it will live up to its lofty ideals. And footprint.
Backroad Anthem Talks Pushing on Without Craig Strickland & Honoring Him as They Go
Nearly two months after Backroad Anthem singer and acoustic guitarist Craig Strickland was killed in a severe storm during a hunting trip in Oklahoma, his bandmates are carrying on keeping their fallen brother in their hearts.
Strickland's presence is an integral part of the Arkansasbased band's just-released EP, Torn, which is led by a single by the same name. Speaking with Billboard at the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville last week, the band's singer and electric guitarist Toby Freeman said, "He's on every track, singing some lead parts -- 'After Midnight' is a song that he co-wrote. He also does harmony on a few of the other songs." Fiddler player Eric Dysart said the band has been deeply affected by the loss of their partner and friend, as well as uplifted by the response from their fans regarding Strickland's passing. "It's been awful. We still can't believe it," he said. "The outpouring of prayers through it all has been simply amazing. When we found out about it, it was definitely surreal. It still is and it always will be." Bassist Brandon Robold said that the group members -- who met in Church -- credit their spiritual side for getting through things. "First of all, our faith in God has been one thing that has helped to keep us strong and kept us together," he said. "Without that assurance and hope that we're going to see him again in Heaven, I don't know where we would be. Our fans, family and even the people who have never heard of us before, but know the story -- their love and support has been incredible. We've gotten Facebook and Twitter messages from people all across the world. Those wishes have definitely kept us going."
Though Strickland is no longer with them physically, the band is carrying on with the blessing of Craig's family. "They're doing as well as they can," said guitarist Josh Bryant, when asked about Strickland's family. "They're a part of us, too. His dad was at almost every show doing merch.... We've done a couple of tribute shows to Craig right after it happened and they've come to those and have been very supportive of us going forward and everything. They will always be a part of the band." With the EP and "Torn" out at radio, Freeman said the goal is to take their music to new heights in honor of their fallen teammate. "We want to try to push it as far as we can and do it for Craig. He continued, saying that "Torn" is a particularly special song for the band and he's glad to see it starting to get some attention. They wrote the song about six months about with Luke Bryan's producer Jody Stevens, Tommy Cecil, Jay Brunswick and Thomas Archer, and he said he remembers its creative process being about as infectious as the tune itself. "We were at Jody's studio in Nashville and were kind of messing around with the melody. There were a couple other writers in the room and they wanted to be in on it. The next day, people kept being added and our cut kept getting smaller," Freeman said with a laugh, adding it was well worth it. "We spent so much time working on the demo and I'm glad we did that.... We honestly didn't know what we had, because at 5 a.m. -- when we got done -- we were dead to the world. Tommy came back into the studio the next morning and pulled the track back up and called us and said, 'Oh my God, guys, I think we've got a smash.' We must have listened to it 10,000 times, over and over and over."
West One Music Group Expands to the U.S., Launches Latin American Label Independent music agency West One Music Group, a London-based global agency that provides original music to brands and media companies, has expanded its office to New York and Los Angeles and has also launched a Latin American music label. The new Somos music label (which means “we are” in Spanish) is West One’s eighth label, and the first dedicated to Latin American music. Specifically, Somos will feature recordings composed, recorded and produced throughout Latin America, with the aim of taking the music -- including authentic tango, samba, rancheras and salsa -- to a broad audience around the world. The focus on the musical styles, rather than the artists themselves, differentiates Somos from other labels in the market, as does the fact that the music targeted is mainly Latin American, and not merely U.S. Latin. Somos will be led by Colombian producer Felipe Arévalo, a percussionist, producer, sound engineer and musician who’s worked in many different countries. In the next five months, the label is planning to release seven albums. The first, Os Jogos (The Games), inspired by the 2016 Olympic games, is described as “inspirational, vibrant and emotive Brazilian music for sports, action and leisure.” It was produced by Arévalo with Comando-S, a group of musicians from Sao Paolo. West One is led by president and creative director Edwin Cox. The company is a member of 45 collecting societies worldwide and has sup-publishing agreements in 27 countries. The company has an average of 900 tracks in use per day and has placed music in films like Furious 7 and Insurgent.

Guns N’ Roses’ classic lineup is reuniting for a bunch of concerts this year; will they have new music to accompany their tour? Sources close to the band think so. In a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Slash’s former publicist Arlett Vereecke says the guitarist has been logging studio time, working on new Guns N’ Roses music. Additionally, former GNR manager Alan Niven told the magazine that Duff McKagan and guitarist Izzy Stradlin got down “at leas a couple of tracks” during studio time last December. "I know they’re doing some recording,” Vereecke said. “They’re definitely doing something there in the studio. Axl hasn’t been there, but Slash is definitely in there and it’s not for anyone else." When Billboard first reported the Guns N’ Roses reunion dates back in Jan. 2015, only Rose, Slash and McKagan were confirmed to perform. However, these new rumors support previous rumors of Stradlin’s involvement as well. So far, the band has confirmed six 2016 concerts, all in April: two in Las Vegas, two at Coachella and two in Mexico City. A more extensive tour is expected to be announced eventually. Guns N’ Roses hasn’t released any new music since 2008’s Chinese Democracy, and Rose was the only member from this reunited “classic” lineup featured on it. Slash and Axl have mended their relationship enough to return to the stage together; have they progressed towards new music, too? For now, we'll have to wait and see.
