A Picture Can Be Worth More Than 1000 Words

By Eric Muehlhausen eric@edgemonthly.com

The art of photography is over 200 years old. Throughout the past 2 centuries, taking pictures has evolved & changed in ways the first photographers never could have imagined, utilizing the continued advancement of technology to revolutionize the art. What would have taken numerous pieces of bulky equipment even just 50 years ago, can now be done on one small digital camera or high resolution smart phone & a computer. What hasn’t changed, however, is what these pictures represent to their subjects; a memorialized snippet of time frozen forever. Shay Wesley Photography brings a devout dedication to capturing these memories & creating that perfect photo to embody the moments at hand.

Shay Wesley has always had an interest in photography. Growing up she recalls her mother always having a camera in reach to capture those special family moments. As she got older, Shay would continue garnering interest in photography, though she went down a different career path initially, into real estate. Whilst working in Houston for ReMax, Shay’s hobby of taking photos began to blossom into a life of its own, presenting her with some side work. As she took on more photography gigs, she found she carried a true passion for the art, and so started Shay Wesley Photography 6 years ago.

Shay Wesley Photography began with primarily new born photos, and grew into providing many of the staple genres of photographers; weddings, senior photos, family photos, and the like. It wasn’t until 2 years in, when Shay returned to Amarillo, that she found her fervent calling in photography (and subsequently what she would become very well known for), boudoir photography. The idea actually came somewhat haphazardly, when a friend asked Shay to do a photo shoot for her husband for Valentine’s Day. In preparation for the shoot, Shay spent countless hours researching this variety of photography as parts of its artistic production varied some from the traditional routes of photography. What Shay found, and what ultimately would define her style, is that boudoir was not about sexuality, vulgarity, or anything remotely close. Rather, boudoir focused on the beauty of an individual, accentuating a person’s natural beauty. Needless to say, that first shoot turned out even better than could have been expected, and so began what has become Shay Wesley Photography’s benchmark. Over the subsequent 4 years, Shay’s photography would evolve, not only branching out into boudoir, but also stylized theme shoots, pinup, and most notably, conceptual photography. While most shoots portray a definitive, solid impression & purpose, conceptual photography incorporates aspects of storytelling throughout a shoot or series that one may equate more to blending styles used by novelists in creating a vivid world for the reader, while also taking aspects of modernist surrealism in painting, to bring a degree of depth to a set of photos that portrays more than simply an individual, couple, or family. Although Shay’s conceptual photo shoots carry qualities that vary from the others, she has integrated facets of conceptual production into many of her other photographic styles. This blending of traditional with conceptual adds a valuable feature to even more mundane shoots like modeling or pageant which sets them apart from any other photo shoot in town. So, you just came into a ton of money. Maybe it was a signing bonus for a major sports team. Maybe you won the lottery. Or maybe you cashed in your 401K (bahahahaha!). Regardless, it’s time to piss it all away. Luckily, these liquors will allow you to do just that. Behold, the world’s most expensive liquors. Armand de Brignac Midas: $200,000 Owned by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z (of course), Armand de Brignac’s 30L, gold-painted Midas lives up to the hype. A regular bottle of Armand de Brignac Champagne would already be expensive ($300), but this giant bottle is the perfect bling for an all-night rave (and an amazing arm workout between sips). How else are you going to show that you have way too much money to burn?

Bombay Sapphire Revelation: $200,000 While Bombay Sapphire is high-quality gin, the bottle is the star of the show here. Artist Karim Rashid designed five unique bottles featuring Baccarat crystal and adorned with diamonds and sapphires. The Dalmore 62: $215,000 1. The second Scotch whiskey on the list, The Dalmore 62 is touted as of the most expensive whiskey in the world. First released in 2012, the whiskey spent 62 years in a cask before it was bottled. Adding to the price and rarity of this Scotch, Dalmore produced only 12 bottles of this expression. This might be a good investment: as people crack open these bottles, the value of an unopened bottle will continue to increase.

Royal Salute Tribute To Honour: $215,000 Tribute to Honour is the Royal Salute Master Blenders' homage to the crown jewels of Great Britain: the Honours of Scotland. The whiskey itself is a blend of Royal Salute’s rarest offerings, the youngest of which was aged for 45 years. The price comes from the rarity of the Scotch as well as the bottle itself. Covered in over 400 white and black diamonds, Tribute to Honour is truly a regal whiskey for anyone flush with cash. The Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique: Cire Perdue: $460,000 The Macallan is one of the most iconic Scotch brands in the world. It’s known for its massive collection of rare, aged whiskeys. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the birth of famed crystal artisan Rene Lalique, Macallan decided to create a one-of-a-kind bottle. The whiskey was aged for 64 years, making it rare enough. But, since Macallan made only one bottle of this offering, you might have to fork up more than $460,000 to take it home with you.

DIVA vodka: $1 million You might be wondering how a vodka could possibly have a price tag of $1 million. Sure, it’s tasty: it’s made with natural spring water, triple distilled, and filtered through charcoal before being filtered through sand that was made from diamonds and gem stones. Oh, also, the bottle’s adorned with a glass center area that is chocked full of diamonds. That’s why. Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Grande Champagne: $2 million One of the rarest Cognacs in the world, Henri IV was aged for a jaw-dropping 100 years. Named to pay homage to King Henri IV, the only thing rarer than the Cognac is the bottle itself. This sterling platinum and 24-carat gold bottle is covered in over 6,000 diamonds. Pasión Azteca, Platinum Liquor Bottle by Tequila Ley: $3.5 million The most expensive tequila in the world, Pasión Azteca is priced the way it is because of the extremely fancy bottle. Purportedly containing 4-year-old aged Anejo tequila, the platinum and white-gold bottle is adorned with 6,400 diamonds. We’d recommend springing for the fancy, organic limes.

A Pipe Smoking Primer

I can remember visiting my best friend when I was younger. It was fun to get together and have adventures like boys do, but one thing I really, really liked was his dad. His dad was an old farm man and looked like it from the weather-beaten lines on his face to his calloused hands. He was quiet spoken and loved smoking his pipe. Since my dad was a non-smoker, this fact really intrigued me as a young boy. I’d see him lighting up and smoking his pipe in complete happiness. He always smelled like pipe tobacco (Sir Walter Raleigh) and now, whenever I smell that brand, I always think of him. Maybe you had a grandpa who was like my friend’s dad. Maybe you saw him smoking his pipe in quiet contentment and enjoyed that manly smell as I did. Maybe you’ve never known a man who smoked a pipe, so you don’t know what I’m talking about. Either way it doesn’t change the fact that pipe smoking is a manly art. Why? Well, pipe smoking is as much ritual as it is relaxation. There’s a certain satisfaction you get when you pack the tobacco into the bowl just right. Then, the whoosh of the match followed by that wonderful, aromatic smell. Smoke a pipe with one of your favorite cocktails (maybe an Old Fashioned or a Martini) in the comfort of your favorite armchair, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect evening. Today, men who smoke a pipe are taking part in a manly ritual that stretches back to the dawn of time and has continued unbroken to the present. Convinced? Then let’s get started. Since this article is for newbies, I don’t want you to go broke trying something you may not like. So, I’ve provided a list of the minimum items you need to start. When I first started smoking a pipe, I paid $12 for all of my stuff, but prices may vary in your area. Here’s what you’ll need: A pipe. I recommend starting with a corn cob pipe. Yeah I know it sounds corny (no pun intended) but they’re cheap (mine was $4) and if you find you don’t like smoking a pipe, just toss it with little out of your pocket. Pipe tamper/tool. Although not absolutely necessary, this is very helpful in packing the tobacco. Mine was $3 and was a combo tamper/cleaner. Pipe cleaners. Obviously for cleaning your pipe when you’re finished. Most tobacconists will gladly provide you with a handful at no charge Tobacco. This is where a knowledgeable tobacconist is HIGHLY needed. Tobacco comes in a variety of flavors and strengths. I recommend starting out with a blended flavor. The one I started with is called Almost Heaven and is a vanilla flavored tobacco.

How to Smoke a Pipe

To start with, smoking a pipe is a leisurely activity. I’d recommend setting aside at least 20 minutes. That’s one of the reasons pipe smoking is so enjoyable. It lets you take some time to slow down. 1. Fill the bowl of your pipe. This step is the most difficult to master, but it affects the rest of your smoke. Fill the bowl loosely with tobacco and press it lightly down with the tamper. The bowl should now be filled halfway from the bottom. Fill the bowl again to the top and compress a bit more, packing more firmly. Now your bowl is about 3/4 full. Now top off the bowl with more tobacco and press down. There should be a slight space between the top of the bowl and the tobacco. 2. Put the pipe to your mouth and take a test draw. If air doesn’t flow freely through the tobacco, it’s too tight. If that’s the case, remove and try again. If your test draw is fine, you’re ready to light.

3. When lighting your pipe, use a wooden match or pipe lighter. I recommend wooden matches because they’re cheaper. Pipe lighters are made specifically for tobacco pipes and don’t alter the taste of the tobacco. If using a match, strike it and let it burn for a few seconds to get the sulphur off. Then, as you take gentle draws on the pipe, move the match in a circular movement over the surface of the tobacco. Do this until the tobacco is evenly lit. Once it’s lit, you’re still not quite there. This is simply the “false light.” Let it go out, then relight the same way. Once it’s evenly lit, this is the “true light” and you’re ready to smoke. Note: It is suggested that you NOT inhale the smoke into your lungs. Pipe smoking is different than cigarette smoking. This type of tobacco is a bit stronger and is more for the flavor. 4. Take it easy when smoking your pipe. Slow and steady, this is a marathon, not a 50 yard dash. If you puff too quickly, you’ll get what’s known as “tongue bite”– a burning sensation on your tongue. Definitely not what you want. Your pipe may go out 2 or 3 times during your smoke, but that’s OK. Remember, relax and enjoy. That’s all there is to it. If you enjoy your first and subsequent smokes, you can buy the more expensive pipes and tobaccos.

How Apple (maybe) plans to take over your home‌ and why you'll love it Smart appliances were created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. There are many copies. And they have a plan‌ to automate your home (well, hopefully). When Apple announces its revamped Apple TV (presumably at this year's WWDC conference), it'll take the stage not to disrupt the burgeoning home automation industry, but to lead it. The new Apple TV is expected to serve as the central hub for companies battling for a place in your home, and their share of a market that is expected to be larger than the computer, smartphone, tablet, connected car and wearable markets combined.

quickly dividing itself into groups of inconsistent and incompatible (ergo virtually useless) technologies.

In the very near future, with the help of the connected device industry, Apple will let you say something into your iPhone like, "Hey, Siri. I'm hot," and your connected thermostat will adjust the temperature automatically (and, fingers crossed, confirm with "yes, you're a perfect 10; but just in case that's not what you meant, I turned the AC down").

Last year at WWDC, developers had a chance to see what Apple was planning with HomeKit, but the details regarding how it was all going to work for the user were a bit hazy. What we do know is that Apple plans to offer a hardware bridge of some kind that will allow for some compatibility with older devices, meaning if you're already on a home-automation kick, many of the devices you already have in your home may be HomeKitcompatible. It comes with some limits, though. As an example, for security reasons, Apple won't allow accessories that aren't certified by Apple to use Wi-Fi to physically access your house.

When Apple announced its plans to automate our homes with HomeKit at last year's WWDC, it wasn't just offering a new marquee feature to its iPhone lineup it was seizing an opportunity to unify a market that was

By offering a standardized framework that promises users privacy, security and seamless integration with hundreds of millions of existing devices, users get a safe and familiar way to do cool things with their iPhones and iPads and manufacturers get a home-automation platform to deliver their ground-breaking new products far more quickly and easily than they could ever have done on their own. Everyone wins.

Besides the ability to know the outside air pressure or monthly energy usage with the touch of a finger, some of coolest things it's expected you'll now be able to do will involve using scripted events (like Excel macros for your house). Apple didn't just intend to make it easier for manufacturers, though, it wanted to save users the frustration of having to work through a number of complicated and possibly conflicting interfaces (unlike Excel macros).

Elgato Eve Elgato's Eve wireless sensors are an elegant way to track a host of data about your home. Turn electronics and appliances off and on and gain insights into how efficiently you're using energy. You'll also be able to tell if a door or window has been opened and for how long, which could adversely impact the indoor air quality, temperature and humidity of your home all of which you can also monitor.

Lutron CasĂŠta Wireless Lutron has put together a robust system to control your lights, window shades and home temperature from anywhere, so, of course, it has an Apple Watch app. It can use numerous bulb types, including dimple LEDs and CFLs, and supports geo-fencing and Siri integration. The 23-year-old Stay With Me singer was banned from speaking or singing after undergoing surgery on his vocal cords in May. And after being medically silenced for so long, Sam is eager to get back into the studio to start recording new tracks.

Shortly after publishing his announcement, the crooner retweeted a message written by London electronic duo Disclosure that reads: 'That's right... Round two, here we go @samsmithworld (sic)'

The pop star also shared a photo of a giant aquatic creature on a platter being held by a waiter in between two men with the caption reading: 'I'm having fish tonight'.

Both musical acts shared the same black-and-white image of Sam while making their Internet announcements. The picture has white lines etched onto Sam's face, a trademark design for all of Disclosure's cover artwork for their musical releases.

It seemed as if Sam was behind the camera of the fish dinner post, with the musician dining with friends at a swanky restaurant.

Earlier in the day Sam let loose on social media with multiple expressions of excitement. 'I have just found

He also tweeted a sweet general message in the afternoon. 'Love me and don't look back. I want you with me to this road to the sky, we'll be shining every night I promise you. Just me and you,' Sam wrote.

James Taylor set for highest charting album in 44 years

Legendary American singer-songwriter James Taylor is set to score his most successful new album in the UK since Mudslide Slim And The Blue Horizon reached No 4, 44 years ago in 1971. James' latest studio album, Before This World, is on course to enter the Official Albums Chart in the Top 5, based on the first two day's sales. After its release on Monday (June 15), the album finds itself at Number 3, behind only the new albums by Muse and Florence & the Machine. Before This World is his first collection of new material in over a decade and includes the radio single 'Montana' which is currently A listed at BBC Radio 2 and playlisted across 37 BBC local stations in England. 'I am delighted with the album's success in the UK,' said James Taylor, speaking from his home in Massachusetts, 'Great Britain has always felt like my second home. It is where Paul McCartney signed me to my first record deal at Apple Records in 1968 and is where I have always enjoyed a very warm welcome at my concerts.' Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot says, 'It is fantastic to see a legend of popular music back with such a bang. The Official Albums Chart will always be a better place for having the likes of James Taylor in it.' Produced by Dave O'Donnell, Before This World features ten songs, nine of which are brand new James Taylor compositions. When it came time to record these songs, Taylor enlisted many of his longtime musical allies including guitarist Michael Landau, keyboardist Larry Goldings, percussionist Luis Conte, drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Jimmy Johnson. Close friends Yo-Yo Ma and Sting also add their singular gifts to a couple of tracks (Ma's cello graces 'You And I Again' and 'Before This World,' Sting's harmony vocal underscores 'Before This World.') Taylor's wife Kim and son Henry enrich the proceedings further; bringing family style harmony to Taylor's baseball love letter 'Angels Of Fenway' and the classic folk tune 'Wild Mountain Thyme.'

EODM announce new album details

Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme, co-founders of American rock band EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal), are sharing some sexy news today, including release plans for their fourth album, ZIPPER DOWN, EODM's first new studio release since 2008. Currently on tour in Europe, the dynamic duo is also revealing EODM's extensive tour plans for North America and Europe, and announcing an upcoming VICE-produced documentary film about the charismatic Hughes (AKA 'Boots Electric'). ZIPPER DOWN will be released worldwide on October 2 by T-Boy/Universal Music. Beginning today, the 11-track album is available for pre-order on CD, digital, vinyl LP and cassette. iTunes' digital album pre-order unlocks an instant download of its hot lead single, 'Complexity'. For the ZIPPER DOWN sessions at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California, Hughes and Homme co-wrote all of the album's songs (with the exception of their cover of Duran Duran's 'Save A Prayer'), and performed all of the instruments and vocals themselves. The album is produced by Homme. 'The new album, ZIPPER DOWN, really represents to me an attitude and philosophy of life,'says Hughes. 'One should not zipper up, they should zipper down and let it all hang out.' Homme (AKA 'Baby Duck') says, "In an independent study, four out of three doctors say ZIPPER DOWN is an eargasm trapped inside a crazerbeam. And I believe them." About the album's lead single, Homme says, 'Complexity' is the musical equivalent of holding a lucky rabbit's foot with the unlucky rabbit still attached." 'Complexity' is sort of our way of saying, 'Keep it simple, stupid,' adds Hughes. Currently on tour in Europe, EODM has announced a trek across North America in August, September and October (confirmed dates below; more to be announced), before they head back to Europe for headlining shows in November and December, including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
