Behind the Scenes of Valentine’s Day
With Vyna Sharpensteen of Shelton’s Flowers
By Eric Muehlhausen eric@edgemonthly.com For many Americans, Valentine’s Day can take one of the top spots for being a hectic holiday. Between finding that perfect gift, making reservations, and planning the day and/or evening in general, Valentine’s definitely keeps a lot of people on their toes. Although the consumer may find the day busier than usual, none feel the weight of Valentine’s as much as the artisans behind the customary gift that is synonymous with Valentine’s Day; florists and their flower arrangements. We had the opportunity to sit down with the owner of one of Amarillo’s most highly regarded flower shops, Vyna Sharpensteen of Shelton’s Flowers, to tackle some questions on what’s happening on the other side of the counter during this holiday.
Q: Compared to other times of the year, how much extra help do you bring on just for the Valentine’s season? A: During the 1-2 weeks leading up to Valentine’s, we usually employ roughly triple the regular inside staff, as well as bringing on extra drivers during the big delivery days, which vary depending on when Valentine’s falls. This year I think Fri. Feb. 12th will be the big one for deliveries, but we will still see some over the weekend as well. Q: With roses being the go-to for Valentine’s, how many more roses do you go through compared to other times of the year? A: Valentine’s and Mother’s Day are both pretty close, but all and all we go through about 4 times the normal amount of roses compared to other peek times of the year for rose sales. Q: Speaking of roses, obviously red is the primary consideration, but what are some other colors & flowers that are popular for Valentine’s arrangements? A: Pink & white roses are a pretty big secondary for color. We also get orders for other colors for those that want something different, but almost always it’s red, pink, white, or some combination of those. We’ve also seen quite a few requests come through over the years for pink lilies and red or pink tulips; those would probably be second to roses. Q: Everyone knows roses for Valentine’s gifts, but what are some of the garnishes & additions that can be added to an arrangement? A: As far as garnish, most arrangements will have greenery coupled with baby’s breath (bunches of tiny white florets), wax flower (bunches of small star shaped pedals of varying colors), and/or statice (bunches of papery bracts usually lavender or similar color). Some arrangements may use roses as a base along with other flowers too. Then, as far as additions, there are chocolates, balloons, stuffed animals, or accent accessories that we can add to nearly any arrangement.
Q: With so many roses coming in for orders, how hard is it to gauge how many you need to order in advance? In addition, where are your flowers coming from geographically speaking? A: We emphasize quality & freshness for all of our flowers. During Valentine’s, we maintain a standing order with our suppliers that ensures no roses are ever more than a few days in our shop before going out. We buy locally when we can and also get quite a few of our stock from Florida & Columbia with 1-day shipping. We also get some flowers from California, and even a few varieties from Holland. Q: Over the years, have you seen any changes in Valentine’s flower arrangements & requests? A: For the most part it’s almost always the roses and as far back as I can remember, always has been. We have seen a few more mixed arrangement requests over the years, and I guess the only big changes have come from the glassware styles available for vases, those change periodically. Q: With this being one of the more frantic times of the year for you, what are some of the biggest “bumps” that you run across aside from being super busy? A: The weather is a big one. Weather can impact shipping times which impact freshness. We’ve even had a shipment of roses freeze one year; luckily there was still enough time to get the order replaced, but a few days later and it would have been very bad. If it’s bad weather here, obviously that can affect the deliveries too. Q: What is some advice you can give to those guys & gals out there gearing up for the big day? A: The obvious one is order early, that’s a given. The other big one, particularly for deliveries, is be sure to give the right information for where the order is going. There are quite a few businesses that have multiple locations, as well as streets that have 2 of the same addresses that are either north/south or east/west, so that’s very important as they can be quite a few miles apart. Also, a last minute change to a delivery can make the difference between your loved one getting their flowers at work or after work, so try not to make any changes on the day the order is supposed to go out. Q: Last but not least, many of us are procrastinators so we won’t actually place our orders in a timely manner, can we still get what we need for Valentine’s? A: We always make sure to have premade arrange-
ments available so anyone that may have missed the time to place a specific order does indeed still have some options. We wish we could take care of everyone but there are only so many hours in the day & there are only so many premade that we can keep at once so they are on a 1st come 1st serve basis, but yes, we’ll have some. To check out the amazing arrangements Shelton’s Flowers has to offer, visit them online at www.sheltonsflowersandgifts.com or stop in and browse the selection at 7100 SW. 45th. You can also place your order by phone at 806-358-3676. Have a happy Valentine’s Day!

ArcaBoard Is The First Retail Hoverboard Trending News: This Hoverboard Is Real (No Wheels) But Costs $19,900 Why Is This Important? Because the stupid "hoverboard" you got for Christmas isn't a real hoverboard. The ArcaBoard is the first real hoverboard (hey, it hovers) available for purchase. It has no wheels and uses 36 electric fans and 272 HP to stay afloat. Some people will say the ArcaBoard isn't a real hoverboard because it's using a whole bunch of small fans (36 to be precise) instead of, well, some magic anti-gravity device. Well, my answer to that is if someone builds an anti-gravity device the last thing anyone will care about is hoverboards because reality as we know it will change. The ArcaBoard floats, it uses 272 HP to keep you and the board several inches above the ground, and it's available for purchase right frickin' now. Mind you, it does cost a cool $19,900 so it's not something you'll be picking up at Target anytime soon BUT think of how bad you'll make anyone with those stupid WHEELED hoverboards feel. You can travel over any terrain really, including water, and it supports up to 243 lbs. The board has an available stabilization system and is controlled via your smartphone. The downsides? Well, besides the sticker price, it only lasts for between 3-6 minutes (depending on how high you want to go) and the separate charging dock costs and extra $4,500. While others have taken cracks at building working hoverboards, including Lexus, this is the most legit one available right now. So if anyone has a spare $20,000 they want to lend us...
New Fast 8 Image Hints At New York City Location With that sad final scene of Furious 7, encapsulated in the catchy tune by Wiz Khalifa, the audience said a teary goodbye to Paul Walker, but not to the series. Fast 8 is full speed ahead and we have our first hint at where it’ll be located. The first image from the upcoming movie was printed to Instagram by everyone’s favourite bald guy with a badass name, Vin Diesel, and garnering nearly half a million likes. So what can we glean by this image? The famous New York City skyline, of course. No previous movie in the franchise has been located there and this image makes it plain and simple. Yellow taxis, honking horns, and lots and lots of traffic here we come! There's been another rumor circulating about Fast 8 that we should probably discuss here. Josh Wilding of We Got This Covered says he has a source that indicates Eva Mendes and her Monica Fuentes character from 2 Furious 2 Furious will make a comeback in Fast 8. The source also said Mendes is being positioned for a spinoff movie. Could this be part of the trilogy Diesel was talking about? Universal hasn't confirmed these reports about Mendes, so do with them what you will. There's no exact date set for Fast 8, but expect it April 2017 around the middle of the month.
Metallica's Kirk Hammett Pens Appreciation for David Bowie Metallica's Kirk Hammett has penned a long appreciation for David Bowie, with the guitarist writing at length about how Changesonebowie impacted him, how Metallica listened to Ziggy Stardust non-stop during an early tour and the time Hammett met a gracious Bowie backstage at one of the late singer's concerts. "David Bowie dying is such a bummer, and I want to acknowledge what a huge influence he was on me," Hammett wrote. "I bought a handful of albums growing up which I can say heavily influenced me, and one of those was Changesonebowie, which came out in 1976," the guitarist continued. "When I first heard the song 'Fame' on the radio, it sounded like nothing else out there. 'Golden Years' and 'Fame' were two very distinctly different songs. I was raised on AM radio, which was brilliant back then, Motown, Stones, Beatles and all that Bay Area funk stuff, and listening to it in the late '60s and early '70s in San Francisco was a really rich thing. And Bowie was just so different, and after hearing 'Fame' I had to get Changesonebowie." Hammett also wrote about meeting Bowie backstage at one of the singer's concert. Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo had an off-night in Kansas City during a Metallica tour and decided to check out Bowie's concert; the band's one-time tour manager Ian Jeffrey was in charge of the Bowie trek and facilitated a backstage meet-up.
"I had no expectation of meeting David because I'd heard he was very private and liked to lie low after the show, I don’t blame him, that’s what we do," Hammett wrote. "We were just leaving and Ian said, ‘no no wait, David wants to say hi.' He'd only been offstage for 15 minutes, we usually take at least 45 minutes before we can get our girdles off and take our vitamins! He came out, wearing sweats and a t-shirt, and said 'hi how ya doing Kirk, hi Rob!' I couldn't believe it! And then all the fanboy stuff came out, how he’d been an inspiration, blah blah blah. He said he'd known about us for a long time, liked our music and told us to carry on!" Later on, Hammett and Trujillo were stranded outside the venue when Bowie had his tour bus driver ask the Metallica duo if they needed a lift back to their hotel. "We go up the steps, turn into the lounge and there's David with a huge grin on his face saying 'sit down sit down. Rob and I sat down, once again the fan boy stuff came out," Hammett wrote. "I think Bowie's final album Blackstar is a brilliant, brilliant final message. He managed to invite us all, and I think it's the first time that someone has creatively involved their passing as an integral part of their final work," he added. "Thank God David Bowie walked the earth and thank God we were able to experience what he had to give."
Luke Bryan Talks Stadiums and 'Stacked Up' Touring Schedule
Earlier this month, Bryan added a slew of dates to his upcoming Kill the Lights Tour and will now be on the road for the better part of the year. Kicking off February 18th in Evansville, Indiana, the trek currently wraps up October 29th in Detroit. Somewhere in between (April 3rd, to be exact) Bryan will co-host the Academy of Country Music Awards with Dierks Bentley in Las Vegas. "My take on touring is it's been so fun for me and that's just where my bread is buttered," he tells Rolling Stone Country. "I enjoy getting out there and being in front of the fans." He knows that some people, including fellow artists, think he has a screw loose for having such a hectic touring schedule, but that’s the way he likes it. "Everybody is like, ‘Wow, you're doing 90-something dates again,'" says the "Strip It Down" singer, who just wrapped up his second-annual Crash My Playa concert in Riviera Maya, Mexico. "For me, everything I've ever done has worked to make all this stuff happen, so I'm not going to start shaving dates away." "I want to get out there and be in front of as many people as I can and have fun," Bryant explains. "Stadiums are daunting, so it's amazing to do it." In the end, Bryan sees his touring schedule by the simplest economic principles of supply-and-demand. “As long as [fans] are out there doing it," he says, "I’m always going to have a pretty stacked up touring schedule.”
'Weird Al' Succeeds Kid Cudi as 'Comedy Bang!
Bang!' Bandleader
"Weird Al" Yankovic has signed on as the new bandleader/co-host of Comedy Bang! Bang!, Scott Aukerman's absurdist IFC talk show. The parody master will follow rapper Kid Cudi, who held the position for 20 episodes, and musical improv-comic Reggie Watts (now James Corden's side-kick at The Late Late Show), who appeared in the first 70 episodes. "If you would have told me, when I was a teenager, listening and laughing along to Al's In 3-D album, that one day I would partner up with him, I would have asked who you were and how you got in my room. Then I would have politely shown you the door. Because that's how I was raised," Aukerman said in a statement. Production is underway for the show's upcoming fifth season, which will air 20 half-hour episodes starting this spring. Yankovic made five Bang! Bang! appearances since the program's 2012 debut, most recently as the featured guest on the aptly titled 2015 episode "'Weird Al' Yankovic Wears a Different Hawaiian Shirt." Comedy Bang! Bang! marks the comic musician's first weekly TV series role since The Weird Al Show in 1997. Yankovic's most recent LP, 2014's Mandatory Fun, includes parodies of Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," Lorde's "Royals," Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive." The album, his 14th overall, won Best Comedy Album at the 2015 Grammys. "It never gets old," Yankovic said during his acceptance speech. "For the first week after I've won a Grammy, I have it fixed to my forehead with woodscrews, like a Grammy unicorn. Then I take it off and put it on a shelf somewhere."
