Reading Club
Reading Club
We live in Latvia and the national language of our country is Latvian. But most students that attend our school are national minorities (Russians, Belarusians, etc.), so they study in two languages: Latvian and Russian. They also study English as a foreign language from the first grade. That is why during the reading club activities our students practiced and improved their reading skills in Russian, Latvian and English.
Second graders read books about animals in Latvian. The students read books in small groups, pairs and individually.
They also attended our school library with their Latvian language teacher. The school librarian introduced the students to different library’s sections, and they also helped to organize the books in order.
Moreover, the second graders watched an animated story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” with their English teachers. Afterwards, the teacher read the story to the students one more time in order to revise and learn new vocabulary related to food. Then students drew the Caterpillar and the food it ate.
Third graders read an adventure story. Inspired by the story they created their own stories and designed their own mini books.
The sixth-grade students presented their favourite books. They had to create a cover for the chosen book and then to advertise it to other students.
