A large majority of children all over the world choose singing and dancing as a hobby. There are a lot of different music and dancing after-school clubs in Latvia. Music, drama and dancing are extremely popular leisure time activities in our country. Singing and music activities help improve memory and may lower stress. Dancing develops coordination, flexibility and is good for weight management. Drama develops communication and confidence. It also helps increase creativity and critical thinking skills. All these activities make children feel better and let them express themselves.
There is even Latvian Song and Dance Festival (Latvian: Vispārējie latviešu Dziesmu un Deju svētki) which is held every 5 years. It is one of the largest amateur choral and dancing events in the world and an important event in Latvian culture and social life. The main aim of this festival is to unite the nation and strengthen national identity, Latvian Song and Dance Festival is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The first all-nation gathering
happened in 1873, but since 1960 Latvian School Youth
Song and Dance Festival has also been held every 5 years.
An interactive music lecture was organized for the first graders. Different musical instruments and music styles were introduced to them. Students liked this lecture very much.
We have a theatre club in our school. So, the teacher of this club offered the middle school students to try a range of different drama and dance activities. As a result, an amazing Christmas event was prepared for the primary school students. Our middle school students performed a play of a Christmas fairy tale with Santa Claus as the main character, organized different games and dancing activities.
Third graders prepared a Christmas Show in English for pre-school children. An English teacher helped the students choose poems about winter and Christmas. The drama teacher helped them to think of appropriate movements for the performance of their poems. Additionally, a Christmas Show was shot and displayed on the school’s interactive screen in the hallway. It was periodically demonstrated during December, so everybody could enjoy the spirit of Christmas time.
