I bet there are a lot of snakes in this forest!
Unit 8

Next, Brandy and Colin explore the street in front of the house. Brandy and Colin walk up the hill, and see a taxi rank and a little grocery store.
Let’s buy some apples! Good idea! I’m hungry!

Davie is very excited. He’s eight today. It isn’t his birthday party. That’s on Saturday. But his grandparents are coming over today, and he thinks they are bringing him some oil paints. Davie loves painting and he really wants oil paints.
36
Literature Environment
Happy birthday, Davie.
Thank you, Grandma. Thank you, Grandpa.
There is a knock on the door. Davie runs to open it. It’s his grandparents, and his grandmother is carrying a gift for Davie. She embraces Davie and gives him the gift. Unit 9
Story 4 37
Davie tears the paper off his gift. Davie is sure it’s the oil paints he wants and opens the box. Surprise! There are colored chalks in the box. Davie is disappointed. Do you like them, Davie? Er... Yes. They’re great! Thanks a lot grandpa.
It’s the next day. Davie is bored! His Mom goes and gets the box of colored chalks. Come on, Davie. Do a picture! But how? I need paints.
38
That’s street art! And the artist is using colored chalks, not oil paints!
Wow!
Davie’s Mom has an idea. She gets her car keys out of her purse, and drives Davie downtown. She stops the car in the city center. A street artist is working on a picture on the sidewalk. It’s an amazing picture. Unit 9
Story 4 39
Davie and his Mom drive home. Davie runs into the house for his colored chalks, kneels on the sidewalk and starts drawing. He remembers a story his Grandma read to him once. It was about a magic forest with beautiful trees, flowers that spoke, rabbits that danced and birds with large, colorful wings. So, Davie takes the chalks and draws a picture of them. It’s a great picture. Davie is very happy with it. 40
Literature Environment
It’s time for Davie to go in and do his homework. Mom goes out to look at his picture. It is very, very good! Don’t worry! I have a picture of your beautiful street art!
Oh no! My picture. Now Dad won’t see it!
Davie’s Mom goes back into the house for her cell phone. She takes a photograph of Davie’s picture. Soon it starts to rain! The rain washes away the picture. Davie is very sad! Unit 9
Story 4 41
Let’s send that photograph to Grandma and Grandpa!
That’s a very good idea! Davie’s Mom shows Davie the photograph of his picture. Davie is happy again. The photograph is great. Street art is really exciting especially when you draw your favorite stories. Now, Dad is home and very happy to see how David draws beautiful stories! Davie plans to do a lot of street art with his colored chalks! And his Mom plans to take photographs of all Davie’s pictures. 42
