PRESENTACIÓN Sevilla despierta del letargo del invierno y estrena estación con un color especial. El color del azul celeste del cielo, el verde y blanco de los naranjos en flor, los rosas y morados de las flores que viven en el barrio de Santa Cruz… Sevilla es una explosión de primavera. Un sol radiante, aroma de azahar, jardines y patios cuajados de flores, geranios que cuelgan de los balcones, mucho ambiente en sus calles y escaparates cuidadosamente decorados se preparan para dar la bienvenida a las fiestas propias de esta época. Pasear por el centro de la ciudad y visitar algunos de sus monumentos más emblemáticos en un día primaveral es un auténtico placer. Al igual que recorrer su zona de compras que, situada en el casco histórico, es un precioso centro comercial a cielo abierto que ofrece una fusión de ayer y hoy, con comercios artesanales de toda la vida que alternan con modernas tiendas de firmas nacionales e internacionales. INTRODUCTION Seville wakes up from the winter lethargy and begins the new season with a special colour. The colour of the bright blue sky, the greens and whites of the flowering orange trees, the pinks and purples of the flowers residing in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood… Seville is an exhibition of springtime. A radiant sun, the aroma of orange blossom, gardens and patios replete with flowers, geraniums hanging from the balconies, streets filled with life and carefully decorated shop windows prepare to welcome the season’s festivities. It is a true pleasure to go for a walk in the centre of the city and visit some of its most emblematic monuments on a spring day. Its shopping area, situated in the historical centre, is a beautiful open-air shopping centre which offers a fusion of the past and the present, with alternating lifelong craft shops and modern, national and international brand shops. Este año la Semana Santa se celebrará del 14 al 21 de abril. Desde el Domingo de Ramos hasta el de Resurrección, la ciudad rememora la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Cristo a través de más de sesenta cofradías que realizan su estación de penitencia por las calles de Sevilla. Durante la conocida como “Semana Grande”, las diferentes hermandades realizan un itinerario que va desde su parroquia hasta la Catedral. Es la llamada “carrera oficial”, que comienza en la plaza de La Campana y finaliza con la salida de la procesión por la Puerta de Palos, en la Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes. Desde ahí comienza el recorrido de vuelta a su templo.

El ambiente de la ciudad en estos días es único. El inconfundible aroma del azahar se mezcla con el olor a incienso, la gastronomía recupera recetas típicas de platos y dulces y el sonido de las zapatillas de los costaleros se funde con el de las marchas de las bandas de música, o si tienes suerte, con el de una saeta cantada a la imagen.

las hermandades de vísperas realizan la estación de penitencia por sus barrios. Ten en cuenta que esta información no suele recogerse en los programas. En Semana Santa, los sevillanos acostumbran a vestir elegante. Los hombres llevan traje de chaqueta con corbata, sobre todo el Domingo de Ramos (día en el que la tradición aconseja estrenar alguna prenda), Jueves y Viernes Santo. Como símbolo de luto, las mujeres visten de negro y lucen mantilla -también negra- el Jueves y Viernes Santo. En el centro, encontrarás muchas tiendas que ofrecen prendas de vestir y mantillas para conseguir un atuendo apropiado. En primavera, la temperatura es agradable durante el día, pero por la noche refresca por lo que es recomendable llevar prendas ligeras y algunas de abrigo. Te aconsejamos también llevar calzado cómodo. Por la mañana, los templos abren sus puertas al público: contemplar los pasos de cerca es una maravilla. Puedes combinar estas visitas con una agradable ruta comercial por el centro y dedicar la tarde a ver las procesiones en la calle. Si quieres comprar una túnica de nazareno de cualquier hermandad de España, hay comercios que incluso las confeccionan en 48 horas. En caso de lluvia, los templos abren sus puertas también por la tarde. Ayúdate del itinerario para consultar puntos del recorrido y horarios. Es aconsejable llegar al lugar deseado antes que la Cruz de Guía de la hermandad. Si no conoces bien la ciudad, debes huir de calles estrechas y grandes aglomeraciones. Conviene que tengas en cuenta que en el centro las calles que forman parte de la “carrera oficial” están cortadas por la tarde debido a la instalación de sillas y palcos. Para cruzarlas, hay previstos varios pasos señalizados (Sierpes, Plaza de San Francisco, Avda. de la Constitución y García de Vinuesa) o puedes optar por un recorrido alternativo. No olvides saborear los platos y dulces típicos de estas fechas. Te encantarán las espinacas con garbanzos, las pavías de bacalao, las torrijas y los pestiños caseros que sirven en muchos bares y cafeterías del centro.

HOLY WEEK

This year Holy Week (Semana Santa) is celebrated from 14 until 21 April. . From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the city recalls the Passion, death and Resurrection of Christ by means of over sixty church brotherhoods (cofradías) carrying out their stations of penance through the streets of Seville. During this week also known as “Semana Grande” (Big Week), all brotherhoods follow an itinerary which originates in their parish and reaches the Cathedral. The carrera official (“official route”) begins in Plaza de La Campana and ends with the procession exiting through the Puerta de los palos (“Palos Gates” or “Door of the sticks”), in Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes. From there, the journey back to the temple begins. During these days, the atmosphere of the city is unique. The unmistakable orange blossom aroma blends with the smell of incense, the gastronomy shows its traditional dishes and desserts, and the sound of shoes coming from the costaleros (porters who carry the paso, a wooden float made for processions) fuses with the marches of musical bands or, if you are lucky, with a saeta (sacred song) sung to the statue.

(Saturday of Passion) (12 and 13 April), the evening brotherhoods carry out their stations of penance in their neighbourhoods. Bear in mind that these are not usually included in the programmes. During Holy Week, Sevillians tend to dress elegantly. The men wear suits and ties, especially on Palm Sunday (when tradition calls for wearing a new piece of clothing for the first time), as well as on Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday) and Viernes Santo (Good Friday). As a symbol of mourning, the women dress in black with a black mantilla (a lace shawl) on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. In the centre, you will find many shops where you can buy appropriate attire including mantillas. In springtime, it is advisable to bring light clothes as the temperature is pleasant during the day, but also something to cover up at night, as it cools down. In the morning, contemplating the pasos close up is delightful as churches open their doors to the public. You can combine such visits with a pleasant shopping detour through the centre and spend an afternoon seeing the processions in the street. In case of rain, churches also open their doors in the afternoon. Use the itinerary to check for passing points and timetables. It is advisable to arrive to your chosen point before the brotherhoods’ Cruz de Guía (a cross carried at the beginning of each procession). If you are not very familiar with the city, you should avoid narrow streets and big crowds. Bear in mind that the streets included in the carrera oficial are cut off all afternoon due to the installation of chairs and box seats. Various walkways are foreseen with indications to cross these streets (Sierpes, Plaza de San Francisco, Avenida de la Constitución and García de Vinuesa), or you could opt for an alternative route. la feria de abril Una de nuestras fiestas más populares es la Feria de Abril, una semana en la que Sevilla ofrece una estampa alegre y colorista con su ir y venir de flores y volantes. It is with the lighting up (“alumbrao”) of the thousands of light bulbs across the entrance gate (portada) and the streets of the Fair at midnight on Saturday 4 May that the celebration of one of the most important festivities of the city commences. Seville watches the Real de la Feria – fairgrounds covered in rows of casetas (temporary marquee tents decorated with lanters and lights) situated in the neighbourhood of Los Remedios, and which originated as a livestock trade fair in 1846. During one week, one can enjoy the elegant horsemen and women riding their beautiful carriages through the Real (until 8 p.m.), and stop to have a drink in one of the public casetas while watching people dancing sevillanas. A tourist information point can be found next to the portada. One of the big attractions of the Feria is the women’s ﬂamenca dresses, which is the only regional costume subjected to fashion tendencies and which is complemented with attractive accessories such as shawls, earrings, combs and flowers. If you would like to live the experience as a true sevillana, you can visit the shops in the centre of the city where you can purchase a dress and where you can even be primped in a few hours.

The XXXIV Exhibición de Enganches, an exhibition of traditional carriage hitches which shows the most representative and spectacular carriages of the city, takes place on Sunday 5 May in the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. That same afternoon, the Maestranza welcomes the famous corrida de rejones (bullfight on horseback). In addition, there are bullfights every day during the week of Feria. TIPS TO NOT “GET LOST” in the April Fair

 The April Fair takes place in closed fairgrounds in the neighbourhood of Los Remedios. It is advisable to reach it by public transport.  The portada is different each year. LAS CRUCES DE MAYO Mayo, el mes de las flores, llena de cruces las calles de Sevilla. Si nos visitas durante esta época, por diferentes barrios puedes encontrarte con pequeñas procesiones infantiles y juveniles. Son las llamadas Cruces de Mayo que, semejantes a los pasos de Semana Santa, aunque de mucho menor tamaño y portando solo la cruz, se pasean al son de tambores y trompetas. Sin duda, una tradición popular que inicia a los niños y jóvenes en el universo cofrade. La mayoría de las Hermandades y Cofradías de Sevilla tienen también sus propias Cruces. Durante esos días, en algunos patios o plazoletas de la ciudad se celebran tradicionales fiestas y “velás”, en las que se instalan pequeños altares con cruces adornadas con flores, mantones, macetas y farolillos. Aquí se canta, se baila y se come rodeado de amigos y vecinos. Por estas fechas, pasear por el centro de la ciudad, disfrutando de los cálidos rayos de sol y el aroma de azahar de los naranjos en flor, descubrir patios y jardines cuajados de flores, buganvillas que trepan por las fachadas o geranios que cuelgan de los balcones, es una maravilla.

MAY CROSSES May, the month of the flowers, fills the streets of Seville with crosses. If you are visiting us at this time of year, you will be able to come across children’s processions in various neighbourhoods. These are known as the Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) which, in a similar manner as the pasos during Holy Week, although on a much smaller scale and only carrying the cross, walk around to the sound of drums and trumpets. During these days, traditional festivities and evening events, known as “velás”, are celebrated in some patios and squares, where small altars are installed with adorned crosses with flowers, shawls, flowerpots and lanterns. Here, people sing, dance and eat surrounded by their friends and neighbours. At this time of year, it is truly enchanting to stroll through the centre of the city, enjoying the warm rays of sun and the aroma of the flourishing orange blossom, and discovering gardens and patios replete with flowers, bougainvilleas climbing up the facades or geraniums hanging down from the balconies.

el rocío La romería de El Rocío es una de las más famosas y multitudinarias que existen. Cada año, más de cien hermandades de toda España y alrededor de un millón de “romeros” realizan esta peregrinación a pie, a caballo o en carretas tiradas por bueyes o tractores a través de los caminos. El río Quema, la Raya Real o el Ajolí son algunos de los enclaves más significativos de “el camino” de Sevilla a El Rocío, una aldea que se encuentra en Almonte (Huelva). En su ermita les aguarda la Virgen de El Rocío, popularmente conocida como la Blanca Paloma. Este desfile colorista, emotivo y solemne, lleno de polvo, sudor y fe, comienza en la capital hispalense con la salida de los Simpecados. En el centro, es un espectáculo disfrutar de la salida de la Hermandad de Sevilla de la Iglesia del Salvador -situada en la plaza del mismo nombrey del discurrir del cortejo por el centro histórico de la ciudad, que este año tendrá lugar el miércoles 5 de junio por la mañana. A su vuelta, el día 12 por la tarde, volverá a recorrer las calles de la capital para llegar a su templo, poniendo fin a una intensa semana de devoción.

el rocio El Rocio is one of the best-known romerias with one of the largest participations in the world. Each year, over one hundred brotherhoods from across Spain and approximately one million “romeros” take part in the pilgrimage by foot, horse, and carts pulled by oxen or tractors. The river Quema, the Raya Real or the Ajolí are a few of the most significant settings found along the way from Seville to El Rocio – a small village in Almonte (Huelva). The hermitage is home to the Virgin of El Rocio (Virgen de El Rocío), popularly known as the Blanca Paloma (White Dove). This colourful, emotive and solemn journey filled with dust, sweat and faith begins in the capital of Seville marked by the exit of the Simpecados brotherhood. It is a real spectacle to experience the brotherhood exiting the Church of El Salvador, located in the square under the same name (Plaza del Salvador) as well as the passing-by of the procession through the historical centre of the city, which, this year, takes place in the morning of Wednesday 5 June. On its return, in the afternoon of the 12th, it will once again pass through the streets of the capital city in order to reach its final destination, its Church, and consequently put an end to an intense week of devotion.

EL CORPUS CHRISTI En la ciudad de Sevilla se celebra tradicionalmente la festividad del Corpus, que tiene lugar sesenta días después del Domingo de Resurrección, punto de partida para el resto de celebraciones litúrgicas. Ese día es conocido popularmente como uno de los tres jueves del año que relucen más que el sol. Este año, el 20 de junio los sevillanos madrugarán para disfrutar de la procesión que lleva al Santísimo a las calles en un cortejo en el que se dan cita diferentes estamentos sociales, culturales y políticos de la ciudad, acompañando a la Custodia y a los santos más representativos en Sevilla. Nueve pasos saldrán de la Catedral para recorrer el centro, vestido de gala con alfombras de romeros y otras especias aromáticas, altares, escaparates y balcones adornados con alegorías eucarísticas. Esta estampa primaveral es una delicia.

Desde muy temprano, ciudadanos y visitantes saldrán a vivir el ambiente propio de ese día, desayunando en los bares típicos de la zona. Merece la pena acercarse a la Plaza de San Francisco para ver las portadas instaladas y el altar con la Virgen de la Hiniesta colocado a las puertas del Ayuntamiento. Te encantará pasear la tarde antes por el centro y disfrutar de su ambiente festivo. Te recomendamos que recorras calles como Sierpes, Tetuán, Francos o Cuna para ver los coloridos altares, balcones y escaparates. Además, la Catedral está abierta para ver la Custodia y los pasos que procesionarán al día siguiente y, en distintos puntos del centro, se celebrarán conciertos y otras actividades. Una de las tradiciones más peculiares de la ciudad que tiene lugar el día del Corpus Christi, y durante los siete posteriores, es el baile de los Seises en la Catedral, sin duda, un espectáculo único.

CORPUS CHRISTI In the city of Seville, it is a tradition to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, which takes place sixty days after Easter Sunday, and which is the starting point for the remainder of the liturgical celebrations. This day is popularly known as one of the three Thursdays of the year that shine stronger than the sun. This year, on 20 June, the Sevillians will rise early to enjoy the procession which takes the Santisimo brotherhood to the streets, bringing together an array of social, cultural and political groups of the city, and accompanying the Custodia brotherhood as well as the most representative saints of Seville. Nine pasos will leave the Cathedral and travel through the centre, dressed up with rosemary carpets and other aromatic spices, altars, displays and decorated balconies with Eucaristic allegories. This springtime sight is delightful.

From early morning, residents and city visitors will go out to live this day’s atmosphere, starting with breakfast in the traditional bars of the area. It is worth visiting the Plaza de San Francisco to see its portadas (entrance gates) and the altar carrying the Virgen de la Hiniesta, placed near the town hall entrance. You will love walking around the centre and enjoy the festive atmosphere the afternoon before. We recommend you walk down Calle Sierpes, Tetuan, Francos and Calle Cuna to experience the colourful altars, balconies and shop window displays. The Cathedral is also open to see the Custodia and the pasos which will be carried out the next day, and various concerts and activities take place in different parts of the centre. One of the most peculiar and unique traditions of the city, which takes place the day of Corpus Christi as well as for the following seven days, is the baile de los Seises (a group of children dancing before the Santisimo) in the Cathedral.
