Lean Into It

I gravitate towards people who “lean into” the conversation, their work, their play; you know they’re into It! Where did the phrase, “lean into it” come from?

Lean in became a business motto in 2013, taken from the title of the book, “Lean In: Women Work and the Will to Lead” written by Shery Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, and Nell Scovel, a writer and Sandberg’s collaborator. The phrasal verb, lean into something: I lean in to accept the challenge of doing something and try hard to do it successfully. Golf is a catalyst for incredible opportunity, pushing athletes to new heights, inspiring creativity and innovation all over the world!

August is National Golf Month, consider the exciting course we are on together. In marketing golf, we follow the risks, vulnerability, and passion of the industry, watching homemade prototypes skyrocket to the top of the market, and seeing the turf life grow greener and brighter year by year. The secret to golf’s longevity is the tradition of “leaning into” what makes us most frustrated, challenged, and joyful!

From advanced agricultural sciences to simulated virtual courses, these innovations are not novelties of an old game, but avenues that enhance our understanding of how boundlessly the bold play. Today, we play a course of transformation, shifting demographics, and a renewed focus on community. It’s the courage to “lean into” the hardest opportunities that present themselves that have brought us to this bright world stage. Together, we choose to ELEVATE and APPRECIATE what it takes each of us to “lean in!”

Marketing golf can be a difficult, but you just have to get up every day and “lean into it!”

BOYNE Golf The Summertime Golf Adventure

As a golf writer, I get to play at a lot of great golf resorts around the world. The one I keep coming back to: BOYNE Golf. Over the past 50 years, this renowned Northern Michigan golf destination has grown to become one of the largest golf destinations in North America – now encompassing 10 courses and three resort properties, including Bay Harbor, The Highlands at Harbor Springs,

and Boyne Mountain. Yet it still has elements of the feel and ambience I remember when visiting as a young child.

The region’s Norman Rockwelllike lakeside resort towns of Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Boyne City and Traverse City have long been summertime playgrounds for those in the know – attracting people from all over the world, including golfers. It’s no wonder, as the area

offers outstanding golf and is the perfect buddy trip destination.

Nowhere else in the country can you find so many world-class resort destinations, with firstrate golf and amenities within such close proximity to each other. With its 10 golf courses, BOYNE Golf is the dominant player in the Midwest with a growing fan base nationwide.

At BOYNE Golf’s flagship property, located along the shores of Lake Michigan west of Petoskey, the nationally esteemed Inn at Bay Harbor and Bay Harbor Golf Club are high-end luxurious properties situated on the site of an old limestone quarry and cement factory. The Bay Harbor Golf Club, designed by Arthur Hills, offers 27 holes with the award-winning Links/Quarry and Preserve courses. It features a unique combination of open links along the Lake Michigan bluffs, holes flowing in and out of a rock quarry, and through the area’s hardwoods. Within five minutes lies BOYNE’s Crooked Tree Golf Club that is carved through stands of centuries-old hardwoods and apple orchards, while perched on bluffs overlooking Little Traverse Bay.

Boyne Highlands Donald Ross Memorial Course – Hole #8 Alpine & Monument

Across that bay, in the historic and charming waterfront community of Harbor Springs, The Highlands (formerly Boyne Highlands) has undergone an elegant transformation fitting to its Scottish Highlands charm. The second of four phases of this reimagination includes remodeling and significantly upgrading 87 guest rooms into refined and elegant luxury accommodations fitting for golf buddy trips for men and women alike.

The Highlands’ 72 holes of championship golf collectively offer a perfect golf experience where groups can check into the lodge and never get back into their car during their stay. The courses are led by the classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. Heather course, which started BOYNE Golf’s boom back in 1966. The National Course of the Year in 2019, The Heather is a classic parkland experience. The popular Arthur Hills course takes golfers through a variety of landscapes including the hills of Northern Michigan reaching

a pinnacle on the 13th tee with a 50-mile view of the region. Last year, BOYNE began renovation work on its Donald Ross Memorial course, a classic rendition of great golf holes designed by the Hall of Fame architect. The fourth course, The Moor, is also undergoing renovations that include widening fairways, expanding collection areas around the greens with tree removal, all to create a variety of more fun and

playable shot options for golfers. Complementing the worldclass golf, The Highlands is also home to the BOYNE Golf Academy (also located at Boyne Mountain) featuring nationally recognized professional instructors who have developed a variety of gameimprovement programs for all levels. Technology is the highlight for golfers who can experience the GEARS Golf system that can analyze

your golf swing and fit you into the best-possible equipment for your game through BOYNE’s Fitting Center. At their 34-acre, 360-degree training facility they have added a TrackMan Range Experience, which marries incredible state-ofthe-art technology with a classic practice facility. Golfers can see swing data on every shot they hit instantly, as well as play many of the world’s top courses virtually while physically hitting golf balls.

The third BOYNE Golf property, the quaint Boyne Mountain Resort, is located 30 minutes south of The Highlands. The Mountain Grand Lodge & Spa at “the Mountain” features two 18-hole layouts, The Monument and Alpine courses, which offer outstanding golf that appeals to golfers of all skill levels and the most spectacular panoramas in the state. The hotel was the first ski in/ski out

lodge in America with an indoor waterpark. The all-suites lodge features the Avalanche Bay indoor waterpark (one of the largest in the Midwest) - as well as the Solace Spa, an 18,000 square foot luxury spa that offers the best seasonal treatments. The latest addition is SkyBridge Michigan, the world’s highest and longest timber suspension bridge that is over 1,100 feet long and sits 120 off the valley floor offering panoramic views of the Boyne Valley.

It’s no wonder that the accolades keep coming in on BOYNE Golf. Publications like Forbes, Golf Digest and Golfweek continuously rank BOYNE and its courses among the best in America. The variety of golf here is collectively refreshing, the scenery amazing, and the staff always welcoming. If you visit in the summer, you can easily fit in 36 holes every day. During the

long Northern Michigan days that time of year, golfers play well into the evening hours -- sometimes close to 10 p.m. Or go in the fall, when the leaves start changing color — you will thank me later.

BOYNE Golf is located near Petoskey, MI, just south of the Mackinac Bridge and historic Mackinac Island, USA Today’s #1 Summer Destination for 2024. Getting there has never been easier. Nearby Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport offers nonstop flights from 17 major U.S. cities during the summer months. For private jets, Boyne Mountain features a 5,200-foot landing strip. To score a great golf package – or to find out more information – visit www.boynegolf.com or contact a BOYNE Golf Experience Agent at 855.427.6316. They will assist you in planning your golf vacation of a lifetime.

Bonita Bay Club Continues Upgrades, Adds New Member Amenities

Ongoing Improvements at Top-Rated Florida Club Enhance Active Lifestyle

At Bonita Bay Club, members are passionate about staying active and finding new challenges, be it in the Lifestyle Center (wellness and fitness), racquet sports competitions, or by taking on the challenge on one of the club’s five golf courses. Several amenities are underway on the club’s two campuses. Extensive upgrades on the Sabal Course, Naples Clubhouse, practice facilities, and two new golf performance centers are also planned.

The $12 million clubhouse will be built on the footprint of the former building on the Naples campus, creating a new dining room and bar, locker rooms, and retail shop. The positioning of the Lowcountry-inspired clubhouse will maximize views onto the 18th greens of- Cypress and Sabal golf courses.

On the same campus, the 14acre golf practice facility will undergo a $2 million renovation. Improvements will include enhanced fairway cuts to mimic tee shots found on the courses, a wedge-specific area with multiple greens at short yardage, an enlarged short game practice area, and a new practice putting green

for the Sabal Golf Course.

One of the two new Golf Performance Centers will be equipped with a four-bay, 4500-square-foot golf academy featuring the latest golf instruction technology, including a golf-specific fitness area with Technogym equipment. The academy will house a break room for instructors and other staff. In addition, a twobay, 1500-square-foot area building will include one bay for club fitting and the other for an artificial

putting green with changing undulations. The two-bay will also have a dedicated club repair area with the ability to build and customize clubs on-site.

The Tom Fazio-designed Sabal Golf Course will undergo a $16.5 million renovation, touching all features on the course—from drainage to greens. Led by Fazio Design Senior Design Associate Tom Marzolf, the Sabal renovation will take approximately 16 months to complete.

Bordering on a wildlife preserve, Sabal is a memberfriendly golf course featuring five par 5s and five par 3s offering a different playing experience than the adjacent Cypress Course. Renovated in 2022, the Cypress Course was recognized by Golf Inc. with third place in the Private Club category in the magazine’s 2023 Renovation of the Year competition. Bonita Bay Club has also been recognized with exclusive designations including the Distinguished Club and Platinum Club and has been named among America’s Healthiest Clubs.

Keysha M Merced

Where did you grow up?

Humacao, Puerto Rico

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? Theater kids and nerdy kids.

What is your favorite sport to play? Swimming. Favorite to watch? Soccer!

Do you enjoy playing golf? It requires a lot of patience, but I do! Are there any golfers in your family? My little 14 year old cousin.

What do you feel makes this club special? The employees are like a small family.

What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? I get to make people happy with refreshments and jokes and I love watching nature in its natural state.

What is your least favorite part? I’m not the best with sarcastic jokes so sometimes I just have to laugh without understanding the joke.

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? Massage therapy.

What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl? Not only the tips, but watching how the animals and plants around you grow and feeling how the seasons go by.

Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? Yes, we should wear what makes us feel comfortable. I don’t mind the shirt as a uniform.

How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? I’ve wanted to wear a golf dress, unfortunately there’s none at the moment with our logo. Other than that I’m allowed to dress up comfortably.

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? How you can hear golfers yell if they got a good or bad hole.

What type of music do you prefer? I like a mix of everything, depends on my mood that day.

What hobbies do you enjoy? Reading, painting, anything arts and crafts, quality time with my dogs and loved ones, recently got into yoga, or watching a series.

What is your idea of “the perfect date”? Eating something you both enjoy and spend the day or evening going to a park or a place you consider fun and to feel comfortable in being yourself.

Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? Relaxed evening at home with a glass of wine.

Favorite comedian? A balance between Kevin Hart and John Mulaney

What else would you like for us to know about you?

I’m just a pure genuine person who wishes the best in everyone. I was model when I was younger and every now and then I participate in events, but I’m mainly focused on my massage therapy career.

Drake Davis

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

I was born in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Home of Masters champion Zach Johnson. Honestly loved growing up there but with time comes growth and change.

Is “acting your age” overrated?

It depends who you ask, if it’s  my boss or parents then, yes, acting my age is important. I may be 25 but don’t feel a day over 18. Aging like a fine wine.

What do you do for a living?

I am an Orthopedic Trauma nurse. I love what I do, but at times can be stressful dealing with everything all at once.

What would you like to do for a living?

If you are any sort of true golf lover, then you’d choose golf. The difficulty, skill and focus for it. Plus, getting to play with friends, have couple drinks. What’s there not to like.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

I grew up in a house full of music. My father is a professional jazz musician. Any chance to listen to live music is the best way to relax and enjoy some free time.

What golf apparel do you like to wear?

I love Nike. I think it’s because of Tiger woods. Growing up watching him win the masters. He always had Nike on.

Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know.

Call me a baby, but I’d rather jump out of an airplane than go on a rollercoaster. My friends always make fun of me for it.

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Success because that could be in any aspect in my life. Whether that is in love, family or money. I just want to be successful in any venture I choose in life.

Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails?

Cocktails and if you’re ever in Orlando, Florida. There are a couple great spots for cocktails. Mathers, guesthouse, and the Wellbourn.

Favorite comedian?

Bernie Mac hands down. The funniest man to ever walk this earth.

Last book you read?

This is going to sound terrible but after studying medicine. I haven’t touched a book or textbook in a while. School drained me with studying and reading 24/7.

Caledonia and True Blue Perched Atop Hierarchy of South Carolina Golf

The official rankings:

1. The Ocean Course –Kiawah Island

2. Harbor Town Golf Links –Hilton Head Island

3. Dunes Golf and Beach Club –Myrtle Beach

4. Caledonia Golf and Fishing Club –Pawleys Island

5. True Blue Golf Club –Pawleys Island

Anyone who is a veteran of Myrtle Beach golf trips knows that a visit to Pawleys Island, on the southern edge of the Grand Strand, is special. It is a calmer, gentler style of Low Country living.

And the most special part of a Pawleys Island visit is the spectacular golf. At the top of the impressive list of courses in the area are the sister courses – Caledonia Golf and Fishing Club and True Blue. Officially.

After years of drawing rave reviews from the thousands of golfers who flock to the two premier courses annually, Caledonia and True Blue are getting the same treatment from the golf course raters.

In the recent State-by-State rankings from Golfweek magazine, Caledonia and True Blue both landed among the top 5 courses in golf-rich South Carolina for the first time. And that is impressive, especially since South Carolina was named the No. 1 golf area in the world for golf that is available for all to play.

While all five courses are magnificent examples of golf course architecture, the first three get quite a popularity boost due to hosting heralded professional tournaments. The Ocean Course has hosted a Ryder Cup, a PGA

Senior Championship and two PGA Championships. Harbor Town has hosted the RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour every year since 1969. The Dunes Club has hosted a number of PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour events over the years and returns to the professional circuit in 2024 with the debut of the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic.

Both Caledonia and True Blue have had to build a national reputation on their own merits as an outstanding golf experience.

“We have been very fortunate over the years to get outstanding recognition from the golf world,” says Bob Seganti, general manager at Caledonia and True Blue. “Now, having both courses ranked among the top 5 in South Carolina is just

another feather in our cap. It is a tribute to our team and the total golf experience they present, and to the design genius of Mike Strantz.”

Strantz, who cut his teeth in the golf course architecture business under the exalted Tom Fazio, reached national acclaim when Caledonia opened in 1994, followed closely by True Blue in 1998. He left the golf world too early, at age 50, after losing a battle to throat cancer in 2005.

“The latest rankings serve as long overdue testimony to the greatness of Strantz,” concludes Seganti. “He really was an artist.”

And now his artistry stands among the greatest courses in golf-rich South Carolina … and in America.

Caledonia #7 True Blue – Beach Bunker

Hannah Leiner and Gabi Powel love to play golf, golf and more golf in their native South Florida.

Hannah who? Gabi who?

They’re household names if you’re in tune with today’s hottest golf media personalities and social media consiglieres.

Adding to their burgeoning stardom is, well, starring roles in Golf Nation’s new series, “Three Courses.” Episode 1 premiered on July 13 on are rolled out weekly on www.golfnation. com and its Android app.

Presented by Club Wyndham, season 1, episode 1 takes us to Phoenix where close friends, blonde Gabi and brunette Hannah, both 24 and happy as the happies clams, do what golfers love to do – play, eat and drink. The

venues: 18 holes at Club Wyndham Legacy Golf Resort, chow at The Larder + The Delta, and adult beverages at Pigtails Downtown.

“Golf is an experience as much off the course as on the course,” says Hannah as Gabi nods in complete agreement. “Combining the mental strength to perform with the golf-lifestyle the rest of your waking hours represents a great life.”

The next two “Three Courses” episodes feature sights and sounds of golf destinations Oceanside, California and Atlanta. Not your normal Myrtle Beach or Scottsdale, but perfect for buddy and, in the case of Gabi and Hannah, girl’s trips.

The former Florida International University golf stars hit it off at first meet-up. That fellowship

glows in “Three Courses” as the duo roots for one another. Notwithstanding, audiences easily surmise Gabi sort of wants Hannah to lip out … and, naturally, vice versa. The competitive fire is there, but, in the end, camaraderie wins every time.

Gabi wields her driver with a swing speed of, proverbially, the speed of light, her greatest bomb stretching 367 yards. While Hannah can’t top that, she claims “I never missed a fairway and never will.”

The “Three Sisters” travelogue captures what these golfobsessed millennials (as do elder generations) want out of the sport and lifestyle – be the best version of yourself on the course, smile throughout rounds and create lasting memories. The blend of

24 Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 5 women in golf

serious and not-so-serious is what golf offers above almost every sport.

Hannah appeared on “Holey Moley” on ABC-TV alongside Steph Curry while Gabi is brazenly focused on growing her already enormous social following.

“We loved filming 12- and 13hour days with the awesome Golf Nation crew,” says Gabi. Her counterpart retorts: “I only wish there were behind-the-scenes cameras during our road trip from southern California to Phoenix – we laughed so hard … golf brings out the best in people.”

The golf getaway is only one entertaining topic covered by the golf-lifestyle entertainment network. Other original, popular

Golf Nation shows include “Ambush with David Feherty” and his hidden-camera hijinks; “Golf Unseen” that, this season, journeys in South Africa; “Tee Shots” where celebrity guests chat, sip and take swings with famous mixologist Bill Binder; and “Watch Buy Play” highlighting the planet’s hottest golf products.

To top it off, Golf Nation President and former PGA of America President Suzy Whaley hosts the comedic “Don’t I Know You?” modeled after the “Newlywed Game.”

Golf Nation debuted in December 2022 and is en fuego. Its patented technology allows viewers to engage with and instantly learn

about and purchase products and other offerings featured in shows by clicking on a “buy bar” while never leaving the streaming experience.

Like Club Wyndham, brands exclusively in and others adjacent to golf sponsoring shows and selling products in video.

Boasting a marketing degree, Gabi notes: “Video commerce is genius. Golf is indeed fun and games, but it’s a thriving business, as well.

In upcoming months, shows will be available on the Golf Nation iOS app, Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku and connected (smart) TVs. The company plans to soon announce a landmark partnership whereby Golf Nation will be pre-loaded on more than 100 million devices globally.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

I was born in Tennessee (Go VOLS!) but we moved to Florida when I was very young.  Even though I grew up on the east coast of Florida, Tennessee will always hold a special place in my heart.

Is “acting your age” overrated?

Absolutely overrated!! Life’s too short not to have fun & enjoy it. I’ll always be a kid at heart.

What do you do for a living?

After working in the hospitality industry at a large golf resort for the last 10+ years in different capacities from Executive Assistant to Revenue Project Manager, I’ve been offered the opportunity to switch industries and recently accepted a position at Organic Matters, Inc

What would you like to do for a living?

I would love to run my own non-profit corporations: one a resource/ treatment center to assist children and veterans get the help they need for mental illness, it’s a very tough system to navigate & can be difficult to get people the help they need, when they need it. And would love to have an animal rescue.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

I try to stay active and love doing pretty much anything outdoors: sporting events, mountain biking, hiking, paddleboarding, you name it (and of course golfing). I also like to hang-out with family & friends, play with the “rawgs” (aka my 3 dogs Roman, Cleo & Harley) and listen to live music or play trivia at a good brewery. And travelling... love to travel & experience different cultures & cuisines.

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty?

My mom & aunts! They are some of the most beautiful women inside & out, who would do anything to help others.  They have and will always be my role models & what I aspire to be like.

Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know.

My closest friends know I’m a goofy dork that is an introvert at heart but can also be the life of the party.  They’ve been known to call me the Shenanigator because you never know what I’ll say or what crazy ideas and adventures I’ll come up with.  They’ll also say I make life fun and have one of the biggest hearts there are.

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy?

Success... doesn’t that cover almost everything?..Successfully in love & in a successful relationship, Successful in my career, financially successful... Successful in all aspects of life

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome?

As much as I love playing with my Team Shenanigans golf crew, I’d have to say my fantasy foursome would include my dad, Tiger & Bill Murray... what a fun day that would be.

Last book you read?

I’m currently reading The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.

Favorite charity to support?

There are so many amazing charities that I support, I can’t pick a favorite. Polk Bully Project, Help Now Osceola, Logan’s Hope, K9’s for Warriors, LungForce, just to name a few.

Let’s face it. Talking about the business of golf isn’t exactly exciting. Even for those of us involved on the management side, it generally takes a coffee (or two) to get prepped ahead of club procedures and budget talks. But then a few months ago I was introduced to Denny Corby. Denny is the new owner of Private Club Radio, a podcast that includes the best-of-the-best in the industry with topics any private golf member would want to tune in to. I spent five minutes with him and said to myself, “this guy is going to completely change the way we talk about managing clubs. He’s going to make it fun!”

The cool thing about Denny? He isn’t a club manager. He isn’t a golf professional. Hell, he doesn’t even play golf. But he is one entertaining dude that will have listeners glued to his show and members rolling with laughter at one of his on-site comedy events.

Yup, Denny is the funniest guy you’ll meet in the golf industry. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to sit down with Denny and talk about his new show, Private Club Radio, and get some insight on what he is hearing about the market for golf.

Denny, you’re quickly becoming a common face in private golf. How did you get there?!

I’ve managed to become a

familiar face in the private golf industry through my passion for entertainment and connecting withpeople. My journey began as an entertainer, bringing magic and comedy to clubs across the country.

As I performed at various private clubs, I built meaningful relationships with club managers and members.

I may not play golf, but I surely know how to create magical moments on and off the green!

You are the proud owner of Private Club Radio and have really elevated it to a new level across the industry. Give readers a taste of what they would expect to see/ hear during one of your episodes.

This podcast is like a treasure trove of industry insights, expert advice, and captivating interviews. When you tune in, you’ll find yourself in the front row of engaging conversations with top leaders and innovators in the private golf world. From general

managers to membership directors, we dig into all things golf businessrelated. But it’s not all serious talk; we mix in some laughter and magic along the way! We also have episodes on PCR called Board Chats, which specifically dives into club board room chatter.

From the perspective of a consumer who may be in your shoes learning everything they can about the private golf business, what are a few things you learned that you had no idea about prior to sitting down with a general manager of a club?

I’ve been blown away by the insights I’ve gathered. One key thing I had no idea about before these conversations is the incredible importance of personalized experiences in private clubs. From tailored events and top-notch hospitality to creating a sense of belonging, clubs put tremendous effort into making every member feel like part of a close-knit family. Another eye-opener was the level of dedication and creativity club managers bring to the table, constantly striving to exceed expectations and stay ahead of the game. It’s like a magical symphony

of hospitality, business acumen, and genuine care for their members.

4.) What is you sense of the future of private golf demand? Are the industry leaders you are speaking with optimistic, concerned, here nor there?

I sense a mix of optimism and cautiousness, as with anything. While many are hopeful about the growing interest in golf and the potential for new members, there’s also an awareness of the everchanging landscape. The industry has to adapt to the changing preferences and expectations of the modern golfer. It’s like trying to predict the next magic trickyou can’t always see it coming, but you must be ready to amaze your audience! Overall, though, the passion and commitment of club leaders to elevate the private golf experience give me confidence that the industry is in great hands.

5.) Outside of Private Club Radio, you are well known as an entertainer that brings magic and comedy to the stage for members at their clubs. Are you still performing? How can a reader get ahold of you to learn more about your shows?

Oh, you bet!

Entertaining clubs with my magic, mind reading, and comedy show is a passion that keeps me going. There’s something truly special about engaging with the members, making them a part of the show, and witnessing their amazement and laughter. I thrive on the crowd work and interaction! Anyone curious can learn more about me at DennyCorby.com, subscribe to PrivateClubRadio.com or look for me on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

So, there you have it. A new take on talking private golf that is clearly the wave of the future. Whether you are a member of club, in club management, or simply love listening to golf podcasts, be sure check out Denny’s show. One suggestion however, skip prepping with caffeine, grab a beer and be ready to laugh!

When you head to Callaway

An Ideal

Resort & Gardens, bring along a bathing suit, hiking shoes, golf clubs, walking/running shoes, bike helmet, a spirit of adventure and an appetite. You might also want to bring along a set of binoculars. Here, there are several hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s natural beauty. Enjoy a cruise along the 10-mile-long Discover Bike Trail that takes you around the perimeter of this resort, through the woods, alongside the azalea gardens, and near many lakes and ponds. Traversing Callaway Resort & Gardens on a bicycle is a brilliant option. You can bring your own bikes or rent them on-site.

Another one of the highlights at Callaway Resort & Gardens is the stunning display of gardens. The gardens feature a variety of plants and flowers, including

azaleas, roses, and hydrangeas. There are also several themed gardens, such as the Vegetable Garden and the Butterfly Garden, which are visually appealing.

Two must-see exhibits are the Butterfly Center and the Birds of Prey.

The Butterfly Center has many butterflies flying around this indoor, vegetation-filled planetarium, where you can learn about the lifespan of butterflies and their role in Mother Nature’s Circle of Life.

The Birds of Prey exhibit is a daily outdoor program which takes place at the Discovery Center Amphitheater. After witnessing this program, you’ll have a greater understanding of the unique powers of sight, hearing, and flight by raptors such as great horned owls, hawks, and eagles.

The resort’s centerpiece is Robin Lake where guests can enjoy a day (or days) at the beach making sand castles, taking relaxing beach walks, swimming in Robin Lake, frolicking on Aqua Island, playing putt-putt golf, enjoying a pedal boat, fishing, boating, and making ‘camp’ in one of the many cabanas (which have TVs) along the beach.

If your family is not interested in walking or riding a bike around Callaway, you can tour the resort on a golf cart, aka a Callaway Cruiser. You can rent either a four-seater or six-seater.

For those seeking adventure, Callaway Resort & Gardens has a zip line course that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. There is also a treetop adventure course, which is perfect for those who enjoy an ‘aerial’ challenge.

If you want total rest and relaxation, visit the spa inside the Pine Mountain Hotel where you enjoy a variety of treatments and massages.

For avid golfers, there are two 18-hole championship golf courses on-site, Lake View and Mountain View, both of which are part of The Georgia Golf Trail. Mountain View is the former site of the PGA Tour’s Buick Challenge.

There are many accommodation options at Callaway: the Pine Mountain Hotel, the Cottages, and the Villas. Spacious and first-class are the best ways to describe the Pine Mountain Hotel, which has 150 guest rooms with easy access to the outdoor heated pool, hot tub, and Robin Lake Beach. The Cottages have two-bedrooms, are family friendly, and have fully equipped kitchens. And, the Villas are upscale, spacious, and well-appointed.

When it comes to dining, Callaway Resort & Gardens has several restaurants to choose from such as The Piedmont Dining Room, Country Kitchen, Cason’s Tap Room, Discovery Café, and the Champions Grille, which is located at the golf

course. You must make it a priority to enjoy breakfast one day at the Country Kitchen, where the ham and eggs are delicious. The quality of the breakfast is matched by the beauty of the views from the dining room. Room service is also available if you stay at the Pine Mountain Hotel. At The Piedmont Dining Room, order the grilled pimento cheese sandwich for lunch.

So, when you’re ready to relax, see the azaleas, and watch a great horned owl take flight, visit Callaway Resort & Gardens. To book a place so you and your family can have a stay-and-play getaway at Callaway, call 1-800-852-3810 or access www.callawaygardens.com. WhenGolf Channel hired Martin Hall in 2011 to essentially become America’s Instructor, he didn’t think it would be a long-term gig. Eight shows, perhaps. A second season, unlikely.

Instead, Hall hit TV golf’s version of the flyer. The Director of Golf Instruction at The Club at Ibis recently hosted his 400th episode of “School of Golf,” making it the longest-running instruction show in TV history.

“It’s staggering … mind-blowing … remarkable, really,” Hall said recently at his daytime home on the back of Ibis’ range. “It’s hard to believe we have done 400 shows.”

That’s a longer run than some of the greatest shows in TV history, such as Cheers (273) and Seinfeld (180). Hall has produced his share of laughs with his upbeat personality.

The 67-year-old Martin admits he wasn’t keen on the idea when originally asked to audition for the role. He thought he was too old to appear on live TV every week.

But Hall soon realized he didn’t have to change his style. He just needed to teach in the same manner he’s done since he quit playing on the European PGA Tour in 1977.

“I decided when I started doing this that the Martin Hall you will see on “School of Golf” is the Martin Hall you will meet on the range at The Club at Ibis,” Hall said. “I teach the same way on TV as I do in person.”

It’s not an easy job trying to teach someone the incredibly difficult task of hitting a golf ball

The Club at Ibis’s Director of Golf Instruction Martin Hall Celebrates 400th “School of Golf” Episode

correctly. It’s more difficult trying to teach through a camera.

But when Golf Channel moved Hall’s show this year from linear (TV) to digital (GolfPass app), golfers can hear Hall’s words of wisdom halfway across the globe.

“I must say I like being on digital better,” Hall said. “I can go longer than 21 minutes (during a 30-minute show) and my producer will allow me to go on rants. But what’s best is you can see me from anywhere, anytime, across the globe on GolfPass.”

Hall once counted that he has either played golf with, given lessons to or done TV alongside 47 different major champions. Plus, he worked with teaching legends such as Boca Raton resident Bob Toski, John Jacobs, Peter Kostis and Jim Flick.

The wisdom they have given me is something I can pass on to the next generation,” Hall said. “I feel a responsibility to serve as a bridge

between the older teachers and the younger golfers. It’s important we preserve this golf knowledge.”

Hall had the credibility before stepping in front of Golf Channel’s cameras. He won the 2008 PGA Teacher of the Year and is 14th on Golf Digest’s ranking of Best Teachers in America. He has worked with major champions Morgan Pressel, Karrie Webb, Lexi Thompson and Shaun Micheel.

Hall has been teaching at Ibis since 1997 from his office at the back end of the range. Any time he invites a pro golfer for a clinic, it’s a must-see event.

“Completing his 400th show is an incredible accomplishment that is indicative of his professionalism and overall knowledge of golf instruction,” said Stephen J. LoGiudice, Ibis’ GM/COO. “Martin is synonymous with golf not only at Ibis, but within the industry.

“He adds credibility to our golf program and is an extraordinary

Martin Hall and Blair O’Neal

asset to the membership and staff he teaches. His golf clinics have been some of our most memorable member events and we look forward to having him here for many, many more years.”

Jay Berger, Ibis’ Director of Athletics, understands Hall’s role at the high-end private club better than anyone. Berger is a former top-10 tennis player in the world who also served as coach of the U.S. Davis Cup team and the Olympics.

“Martin means a great deal to Ibis in so many facets,” Berger said. “He gives massive exposure to our great club through his Golf Channel shows that I constantly watch. He participates in lectures with our members on the mental side of sports.

“He has shown incredible dedication to our club and members. Besides being a top 10 coach in the world for many years, he is incredibly approachable and one of the nicest people I have met.”

Hall has written all 400 shows. Asked where he gets the material, Hall smiled. It’s because he spends hours a day on the range doing what he loves.

“I get them from the students I teach,” he said. “I teach every level player from people who have won

major championships to absolute beginners. I get a lot of lessons from my most difficult student – that’s me! I am my most difficult student because I have all this information swirling around.”

Thankfully, Hall will continue to pass on this information for years to come. And you don’t have to be a

member at Ibis to listen in.

“I made a promise to myself and the people that watch “School of Golf” that I will give every show 100 percent and that I’ll treat every show as if it’s my last. Every show I do is important to me, my personal Super Bowl, and I give it everything I can.”

The Pursell Farms Founders Pub Debuts A Southern Heritage Dining Experience

Drawing inspiration from the founders’ stories and the Pursell family’s Unrivaled Southern Hospitality, The Pursell Farms Founders Pub may be the heart of the 3,200-acre destination resort located less than an hour from Birmingham, announced CEO David Pursell. He and his father, James T. Pursell (1930-2020), charted the path of the company from the early corporate offices that occupied this space prior to the construction of the Inn.

“We used to say, ‘if these walls could talk’ they would have great stories to tell,” said David. “We created a new dining experience surrounded by an entertaining memory lane that traces the beginnings of Pursell Farms in

art, vintage photography, and memorabilia. I guess you could say these walls do talk today.”

Guests will glimpse a remarkable business and a devoted family through numerous anecdotes, from the creation of FarmLinks, the world’s first research and development golf course, to the little-known fact that Jimmy Pursell was introduced to his future wife, Christine Parker, by one of Hollywood’s most popular entertainers. Hint: see the stately pool table and the photo with

Jim Nabors (a.k.a. Gomer Pyle) as best man at the wedding.

The Founders Pub also reflects the Pursell family’s belief that sharing great food at the table is the heart of hospitality.

“Our menus are created with ingredients fresh from Southern gardens and farms, with dishes made-from-scratch and accented with cooking techniques such as smoking, pickling, and barbecuing,” said Chef Sean Butler. “We want guests to enjoy traditional favorites in new ways, and we’ve even sprinkled a few Pursell family favorites throughout the menu, too.”

The Founders Pub is a casual gathering place serving lunch and dinner daily. For dinner reservations please call 256-208-7600 or visit the web site.

July 25-27 saw one of the Kentucky PGA Section’s most prominent majors of the year, and the 2023 Kentucky Open was one for the books. Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted the 104th edition of this prestigious tournament for the third, and final, year in a row. There was considerable competition among these players, as the field contained star juniors, standout college golfers, professional golfers, PGA professionals, and more. Players were selected through a combination of exemptions and five qualifiers throughout July. Despite temperatures well above average and an hour-long severe weather delay during the third round, the final result went down in Kentucky golf history.

Lexington’s Justin Tereshko, the head men’s golf coach at Eastern Kentucky University, hoisted the Jack Ryan championship trophy to add the event to his already impressive resume. Shooting 6565-70-200, he totaled 16-under par

for the tournament and finished nine strokes ahead of the rest of the field. He stated after the round it was “tough to sleep on a lead”, but he created a successful strategy focusing on playing to the middle of the green and “two-putting from 30 feet” rather than trying to attack some of the more difficult final-round pin placements. The amateur becomes just the fourth person in state history to win both the Kentucky Open and the Kentucky State Amateur (June 13-15) in the same year. Tereshko joins the list of golf stars Jodie Mudd, J.B. Holmes, and Phil Hendrickson as the lone four to accomplish this incredible feat in the over 100 times both events have been played. In addition to these two state titles, Tereshko also qualified for the 2023 United States Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills in Cherry Hills, Colorado, with scores of 69-64133. He will then return to EKU for his second year as head coach.

Tereshko took home both the championship trophy

and low amateur honors. On the professional side, Dustin Denzik of Louisville won low professional honors with scores of 67-70-72-209. For the Kentucky PGA professionals, Tom Walters, Head Golf Professional at Summit Hills Country Club, won low honors with scores of 70-70-71-211. Another feat was accomplished earlier in the week by professional Fred Meyers, who set the new Persimmon Ridge Course record with a firstround 64. Meyers totaled 210 and finished in third place.

The 2024 Kentucky Open moves locations for the first time in three years and will be played at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky.

Sink or Swim - The Journey of Bill Scott, PGA

For over 30 years, Bill Scott, PGA has dedicated his career to teaching and sharing his passion for the game of golf with younger generations.

At age nine, Scott was invited by his older brother to the golf course for the first time. His brother was a new member of Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia where the Scott family grew up. It was a junior summer camp at the Club that initially sparked Scott’s interest in the game and from there, he was hooked.

Fast forward to Scott’s freshman year of high school where football was his main passion, while enjoying golf on the side. In a talk with the golf coach, who also happened to be the former football coach, Scott was

hit with some harsh reality.

“Bill, you have about a onein-a-million chance of playing professional football, “ his coach said. “You already play golf, you can maybe make a career out of this, there are lots of different avenues.”

Moving forward, Scott was fully committed to golf and by the time he graduated high school, he had a decision to make - go to college or begin a career in golf. After a semester in college, Scott decided school was not for him.

Thanks to his childhood spent at Mount Vernon Country Club, Scott was hired and enrolled in the PGA Apprenticeship Program in 1992. For ten years, Scott would work at Mount Vernon Country Club, starting in the bag room, working his way to first assistant and obtaining his Class-A PGA Membership. During that time,

Scott worked heavily in junior golf and ran the same junior golf camp where his love for the game was first established.

After ten years, Scott wanted to pursue a professional playing career. He and his wife quit their jobs and moved to south Florida in 1998. Again, Scott was hit by the harsh reality of trying to play golf for a career and the grueling path of making it in professional golf.

Scott knew a change was inevitable and made, what he called, a “cold stop” at Banyan Golf Club to see about potential opportunities. Two months later, David Eby, PGA Director of Golf at Banyan Golf Club, called Scott to let him know about a position opening that he should interview for. Scott was hired as an Assistant Professional in September of 1998.

Not long after he started at Banyan Golf Club, Scott was introduced to Don Law through Law’s daughter who worked as a shop assistant at Banyan. The Don Law Golf Academy was just starting and Law asked Scott if he wanted to come teach. Scott turned down the opportunity and remained at Banyan.

Several years later, Bobby Brown, PGA, a well-respected professional and the South Florida PGA Southeast Chapter Junior Chairman at the time, decided to take a job in Connecticut. Scott wanted to get more involved at the Section level, particularly in Junior Golf and he reached back

north florida PGA north florida PGA north florida PGA north florida PGA north florida PGA north 50 Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 5 south florida PGA south florida PGA south florida PGA south florida PGA south fl PGA south flor

out to Law, who was the Section Junior Chairman at the time. Scott was able to meet with Law and Rick Heard, PGA, the Southeast Chapter President to learn more about junior programming at the Section and Chapter levels. During the meeting, Scott felt as if it turned more into an interview, and was once again offered by Law to teach at the Academy.

More intrigued by the opportunity and ready for a change, Scott consulted with his wife.

“We already quit our jobs once to move to Florida with no jobs, I’ll just quit my job again with a baby on the way and start a new career teaching,” Scott laughed as he recalled the conversation with his wife. “It really was just sink or swim.”

In 2003, Scott quit his job and moved into a full-time teaching role at Don Law Golf Academy, a position unlike his salaried position at Banyan. Scott’s income solely came from teaching.

“It was certainly stressful,” Scott expressed. “But it was something I always talked about wanting to do. Jim McLean, David Leadbetter, those were the guys I studied and as a kid, those were the guys I wanted to be one day.”

With seven full years of “swimming” at Don Law Golf Academy, Scott was offered the opportunity to take over the Academy as the Director of Instruction in 2010 - the position he currently holds today.

While it may seem as if Scott’s route to becoming the Director of Instruction at one of the most well-known and respected Junior Academies in south Florida was seamless, Scott did not have the background of teaching at that level and became obsessed with learning to be the best.

During his early days at Don Law Academy, video lessons and swing technology was just becoming a popular asset for teaching and Scott made sure to take advantage, allowing him to set himself apart from other teachers.

“I always wanted to stay ahead, I wanted to be first,” said Scott. “Obviously we are all on the same team at the Academy, but in my mind I wanted to be that leader.”

As a junior, Scott recalls several PGA Members that showed

interest in him and supported him when he started the game and now sees himself in the juniors he works with today.

“I just want to give back because of all those guys that supported me,” he said. “They made me who I am today.”

The Don Law Golf Academy has several students that come to train at the Academy from all across the world. One student in particular, Chonpatchsorn Mahathep or “Punchy” as most people call her, has been coming to the Academy seasonally for a couple of years now. She always wanted to be able to live and go to high school in the United States but it would take a family to take her in fulltime to have that opportunity. Once Scott caught wind, he spoke with his family because it would ultimately mean a four year commitment. The entire family was on board immediately and now two years later, Punchy is a fulltime member of the Scott family.

Punchy is a member of the South Florida PGA Junior Tour and competes at the highest level on the Medalist Tour. In late June, The 39th Nicklaus Junior Championship,

one of eight junior majors played throughout the season took place.

The week before the event, Punchy came to Scott and said, “Coach Bill, I never win, I only have gotten second.” Noticing that she was questioning herself, Scott responded, “It will happen, you just have to be patient and keep doing what you are doing.”

With full support from Scott, his wife and son Corbin, also an SFPGA Junior Tour member, Punchy claimed her first win at the 39th Nicklaus Junior Championship by two shots.

After the win Scott said to her, “I guess you can’t say you haven’t won one before and you won a pretty big one too. The entire family was so happy for her.”

After all the support Scott has given to Junior Golf, Scott remains determined to continue to impact the younger generations.

“I encourage every PGA Professional to show support for junior golf because you can have an impact on not only golf but life in general,” Scott said. “They are the future of our game, you just never know how you can impact someone.”

Blazing Trails

When this journey began, I never thought this shy farm girl from Painted Post, NY would have such a successful career in the turf industry, let alone be someone others looked to as a,” Trailblazer” in the industry. It has been 20 years since I began a career that I am passionate about. As a wife and mother of three, and a US Army veteran, I wanted to find a job that got me out of the house doing something I loved. Our family had relocated to Fort Dix, NJ in 2000 for my husband’s job and I opened an Army Certified Home Daycare out of necessity. I loved the opportunity to be at home with our children, but the financial strain was difficult. Then a new door opened. My neighbor and true mentor, Dan Mears, just happened to be the Assistant Superintendent at Fountain Green Golf Course on Fort Dix. I asked if there were any jobs available, and the rest is

history. I attended the Rutgers Golf Turf Management Program during the winters of 2005-2006 using the GI Bill I had received when I enlisted in the Army from 19921996. Graduating with high honors from a class of fifty-two, being the only female in the class was a major accomplishment. For years I worked as an Assistant at two different public courses- Indian Springs Country Club, Marlton, NJ and Makefield Highlands Golf Club in Yardley, PA. Both of which are management company operated courses. I often attending events as the only female in the room, I even wondered, as many women in this industry did, were there even others like me out there? As time went on, there were others like me.

In March of 2016, I got my first opportunity to become the Superintendent at Makefield Highlands Golf Club. It was then that Cece Peabody, the Executive Director for GCSANJ at the time,

encouraged me to get involved as a Grassroots Ambassador for GCSAA. That was the beginning of my journey where I realized I could have an influence. I was able to meet new people from around the country advocating for the industry I love. Speaking with lawmakers at National Golf Day in Washington, DC and sharing our stories about being true stewards for the environment. It was that involvement and recognition by Rutgers with the 2018 Professional Golf Turf Management School Award for Professional Excellence and a video about “Career Changers- Second Acts “, that brought about my interaction on Twitter. That truly is when others noticed who I was and my passion to share my experience in the industry. Throughout the past five years I have gained more followers as I continue to use social media to show the highs and lows of a career in the turf industry. Seeing others’ reactions and kindness to the posts has played a positive role in many decisions

I have made. In October of 2019 I took an opportunity to manage a private golf course at Westlake Golf and Country Club in Jackson, NJ with Linx Golf Management. This gave me another experience with a management company that I have genuinely enjoyed. The move opened doors to great opportunities to volunteer at the national level. During the 2022 US Woman’s Open at Pine Needle, I was able to use twitter again to share the opportunity a career in turf can bring. Sharing that event with a group of women, many I had met for the first time as we arrived again showed how much of an impact my journey had on others as well-, they became my sisters, sharing their darkest experiences and the joys. I never thought of myself as a trailblazer before that day.

After that week at Pine Needle, I learned they believed in me, even more than I believed in myself. The week after the Women’s Open, I received a call that would once again change my life and my journey. After lengthy discussions with the women at the event,

they had come to me and asked if I would be the very first woman to run for the GCSAA National Board. Talk about blazing a trail. I was entering a zone I had never believed I would find myself in. I have been a member of the GCSANJ board for several years, but not at the executive level until this year where I am currently the Treasurer. National Board service is typically a path that takes a few years to attain,

so although disappointed that I did not make it in 2022, I will not give up on that aspiration. I will continue to be, as others say, a trailblazer making the path better for those to come. I have at this time made my dedication to serving the GCSANJ and gaining more experience by holding all the executive chairs before I once again set my sights on blazing the ultimate trail to the National Level.

A Turf Pirate's Journal

$Rolling on the River... Boat$

Greetings Turf Pirates and salutations! It is likely that this note finds you still in the heat of Summer and all of the sights, sounds and stresses that go with it. This issue’s tale is tied to my many years at the Stone Mountain Golf Club and while there are many tales woven around Stonemont and Lakemont, the two amazing courses that make up the Stone Mountain Golf Club. Turf Pirate historians often note that my uncle by marriage (this is a southern thing) Joe Bolton was a long tenured golf course superintendent at the big rock long before I took over the captaincy. Stone Mountain has a big connection for our family. Stone Mountain Park also has a ton of history including hosting Archery, Cycling and Tennis for the 1996 Olympic games. So, there will be some of those tales told down the road a ways but for today let’s look at greens rolling to reduce summer stress on bentgrass and the fact that for many years the Stone Mountain Golf Club clubhouse was also home port for the Henry Grady, a genuine paddle wheel river boat! There are few images of turf piracy that cover so much scattered history in one photo. Shout out to Andy Hutchinson for being the roller pilot for this shot! We who grow Bentgrass in the south often roll greens and skip mowing in the heart of the summer to reduce the stress on the turf, equipment and the staff. It is also true that just being near the water can help you turn off the heat (physical and mental) if only for a few minutes. If you visited us and played golf then took the evening cruise count

yourself lucky or as we say in the deep south, blessed. Unfortunately Turf Pirates, sometimes when you see something everyday it loses its sparkle. I mean how many superintendents have an active river boat arriving and departing from the main putting green on a daily basis. The vibe in this area during the summer was always laid back, out of towners would marvel at the sight and cheer the experience. The Commons restaurant patio connected the golf shop to the boat launch and was ground zero for sweet tea, adult beverages amazing southern food and every night the Henry Grady would take to the water for a one-of-a-kind view of the nightly fireworks. Alas all good things eventually fade and this remains a fond memory for my time in turf at Stone Mountain. That’s the thing turf pirates, how many

summers will we be given? What people, places and things will make up the fabric of your time in the golf industry? What amazing things are you blazing by as fast as a supped-up Super’s cart can go that someday will be gone. We have an expiration date, everything, no exceptions. Don’t let a darkness settle. Rise up Brothers and Sisters for we live forever in the tales of turf and here is this month’s assignment look around and see your property with new brighter eyes and make a note of why your place is special (every place is special). In my memory we are still rolling the main putting green at the Big Rock and the Henry Grady is making waves headed to the deep water. I can hear the wheels turning. Until next month Turf Pirates be alert because life moves pretty fast if you’re not careful you just might miss it. Roll on!

How many women are on your team? None this season.

Where did you spend your childhood? I grew up in Carrollton, TX… Spent most of my time in the creek or skateboarding.

What made you get into this TurfLife? / Where did you study? My family moved to Illinois just before my 16th birthday, a childhood friend of my dad’s was the superintendent at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline IL. He gave me a job the day after my 16th birthday and I’ve been in the business ever since. I studied at Penn States World Campus, I was actually a “guinea pig” in the program and along with two others whose names I don’t recall now were the very first to complete their program.

Do you take your dog to work?

I’m a cat guy actually, I had an awesome Jack Russel named Divot who was my right-hand girl for 13 years but when she passed, I found the simplicity of my cats more appealing as I love to travel and do my own thing.

What is your most enjoyable memory in being in this turf industry? Handing a bucket of golf balls to Curtis Strange at the Hardees Golf Classic at Oakwood Country Club in 1997. He was one of my favorite golfers growing up and he was the first person to walk up to me that day when I volunteered for range duty! Who is the most beautiful person you know--inside and out? At the expense of sounding clichéd I would have to say my daughter. Even though she’s not quite 18 yet, her maturity, compassion, intelligence, strength and moral compass are more than a dad could ever hope for. It’s just a good thing for her she looks like her mom!

What do you fear the most? Marsupials….. because they’re fast.

What is the most important aspect of your turf life that you want to share about yourself to GCM readers? DO NOT TAKE IT SO SERIOUSLY!!!!!!! I know every situation is different from course to course and club to club, but I see so many people in this industry who are “burnt out” but they were their own worst enemy all along. If you don’t have your flip flops on by 11 am you’re doing it wrong!

What is your favorite turf equipment? Toro

Tell us about your TurfLife protection for you and your team? Fortunately, my year-round crew all get a rather generous clothing allowance so they have a good supply of all of the above.

When you are attending your “only child’s wedding,” are you checking your weather app? Hell no! now if the Cowboys were playing I’d probably check out some of the game though!

What type of music is on your playlist? Everything from Chuck Berry to Gojira. But, there’s nothing that makes my ears happier than TOOL.

When you are not at your Golffice, what do you do for recreation? Golf during the season, love the game, try and play 4-6 times a week still. Winter times guilty pleasure is some online gaming, I suppose.

Who is the best chef on your team? Joe G. He owned a restaurant down the road for years and when he sold the business, he came to work for us out here at the bluff on the grounds crew. I must say if you have the means I highly recommend putting a chef on staff who also rakes bunkers!

PGA Frisco Resort Chooses NorthBridge® Bermudagrass for Championship Courses

After 1,362 days of construction, the highly-anticipated PGA Frisco Resort in Frisco, TX, officially opened its doors on May 2, 2023. The new headquarters for the PGA of America, in partnership with Omni Hotels & Resorts, the City of Frisco and the Frisco Independent School District, is set to become a major attraction for golf enthusiasts worldwide. Originally scheduled for an April 2022 opening, the resort’s debut was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the golf course to benefit from an extra year of grass maturation and growth. Attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the property in May were the owners of the new resort; Kurt Alexander, president of Omni Hotel & Resorts; Texas Gov. Greg Abbott; Frisco’s Mayor Jeff Chene and other Omni executives and Frisco city leaders.

“For us, it was kind of operation as normal and just another day at work because we’ve been out here for three years. We’ve had a few chances to showcase the facility for some practice rounds ahead of our major championship. We did some kind of soft opening dates and we have the golf course in a really good position,” said PGA Frisco’s Managing Superintendent of Golf and Grounds, Bryce Yates. “We had a few extra people here and a few extra cameras, but everything from our standpoint

went off without a hitch.”

PGA will host about two championships every year: it already held the Senior PGA Championship in May and will host the Women’s PGA Championship in 2025 and the PGA Championship in 2027. Yates said they’ll repeat that cadence until 2031 and fill in the others with not as highly spectated ones including junior league and club pro championships.

Yates, who previously worked at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY moved down from New Albany, IN for this job at Frisco three years ago with his wife and then 3-year-old son and 6-month-old girl. Yates shared that he was encouraged to look at the PGA Frisco project and apply for a job.

“With everything going on around here in Frisco, TX and with the PGA’s commitment to growing the game of golf to 26 championships in the next 13 years, it is very exciting. There is a lot of excitement for this project,” Yates said.

A Golfer’s Dream

The new headquarters were built to be a true “experience” for golfers and students of the game. “This property, this resort, along with PGA headquarters pretty much offers any opportunity that you would want in golf, anything that’s related to golf,” Yates explained.

The new grounds feature two 18-

hole championship golf courses, Fields Ranch East – designed by Gil Hanse and Fields Ranch West – designed by Beau Welling.

“The East Course stretches over 7,800 yards so they can test the best of the best. We offer six sets of tee boxes so you can range from 7,800 or 5,000 yards for anyone that wants to try it. The West Course will hold some events this year including the PGA Jr. League (Oct. 4-8) and high school championships for the state of Texas (July). The Jr. league will be televised by ESPN, so we’ll have two televised championships here on the property,” Yates explained.

Yates went on to say that Welling’s design of the west course, Fields Ranch West, has an incredible way of inviting the golfer in to play. “Again we have 5-6 sets of tees depending on the hole from 7,500 to 4,800 yards. Lots of holes with no forced carry so even if you can’t get it up off the ground, you can still hit it into the fairway. You’re not penalized for having it roll along the ground.”

Additionally, visitors of the resort can also enjoy The Swing, a lighted 10-hole, par3 short course; and The Dance Floor, a 2-acre putting course and entertainment area.

Yates explained The Swing was designed by Hanse and Welling as a first or second step into the game of golf. It has a wide array of shots

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 5 58
Bryce Yates and Sod Solutions Director of Research, Roberto Gurgel, at PGA Frisco

that are very fun for an average golfer and playable for someone picking up a club for the first time.

The Dance Floor is just over 70,000 sq. ft. consisting of three different courses. The 9-hole beginner course is relatively flat for straight putts. The intermediate 18-hole course allows for a more slow paced-play on the slopes. The challenging, white course has a lot of hills.

“It’s a little bit of like a puttputt type atmosphere. It’s open to the public. You do not have to pay to play. You can bring a putter and a ball and just go out and have a fun time,” Yates said. Clubs and putters are available on-site if you don’t bring your own.

The Dance Floor is surrounded by the “Monument Realty PGA District” which is a business area consisting of a barbeque restaurant with live hitting bays over the grounds, a gourmet coffee and ice cream shop concept, and an indoor sports bar equipped with Topgolf Swing Suite technology. Yates explained there is something fun for everyone to do from sun-up to sundown at the new headquarters. Grass for Professional Golf

PGA Frisco Resort chose NorthBridge® Bermudagrass to cover the 180 acres, including the courses and practice facility at the new headquarters. Yates praised NorthBridge’s resilience in North Texas’ mixed weather climates, recalling its successful rebound from negative onedegree temperatures during the February 2021 “Snowmegedden”.

“This year in Dallas Fort Worth, we had a slow green-up across the metroplex but with NorthBridge we were fully green for over a month ahead of everyone else. Some people around us were struggling to get to a full green even into early May,” Yates said.

With hosting championships in May, he explained they really needed to select a grass that would hold up to winter temperatures, heavy traffic and have a good spring green-up for the new PGA headquarters. “We were looking for something that gave us the option to overseed if we ever wanted to have that ability. We had a few varieties in mind and based on some of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program data and talking to some local superintendents, we

ultimately selected NorthBridge specifically for those three qualities.”

In addition to performing well through some weather challenges, he particularly likes the density of this grass. He explained from low fairway mowing heights to two-inch intermediate rough cut heights in other areas, it performs well and gives them flexibility as turfgrass managers. “If we want to create more rough or more fairway it’s as simple as changing the height of mowers instead of the grass,” Yates said.

He also commented that

destination. “Frisco has been renowned as the best place to raise an athlete and was the number one sports city in America back in 2018-19. So a lot of accolades and sports but one thing it was missing was major championship golf. PGA of America deciding to move their headquarters here, Omni Hotels and the partnership with the City of Frisco and PGA building the golf courses has filled that void,” Yates said. “Now you can see any major sport that’s offered in America here in one city.”

With the addition of PGA

NorthBridge’s color retention into fall and quick spring green-up are this grass variety’s biggest attributes. “There’s a very short amount of time where it is under full dormancy and for us that’s important. I don’t really want to overseed. Our hope with NorthBridge is that we could paint or dye it for a few months and not go through the trouble of the overseeding process.”

Being his first experience with bermudagrass, Yates appreciated NorthBridge’s ability to recover quickly from aggressive and agronomic practices, leaving minimal visible scars on the courses. Additionally, he praised how fast NorthBridge regained its rich-dark color with water and fertilizer, contributing to the courses’ firm and fast playability.

City for American Sports

Yates explained that the PGA headquarters coming to Frisco, makes the city a full sports package

Frisco Resort, the city of Frisco solidifies its status as a full sports destination, complementing its existing professional teams, including FC Dallas (MLS), Dallas Stars (MHL), Dallas Cowboys (NFL), Dallas Mavericks (NBA) and the Frisco RoughRiders (Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers).

The $520 million development includes 127,000 square feet of meeting space, 500 guest rooms, 10 luxury four-bedroom ranch houses, 13 food and beverage outlets, five retail shops and four pools. This significant investment is set to create 1,000 new jobs, making Frisco a true sports and golfing haven for enthusiasts and visitors alike.
