ABOUT THE EJFS
A MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL PRODUCER On behalf of the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society I would like to welcome you to the 2013 Edmonton International Jazz Festival. In continuing the 30plus year tradition of a world-class celebration of jazz, we are all in for perhaps the best festival yet. Over 90 sets of music presented at 9 venues by an amazing array of artists from around the world. Where is YOUR JAZZ you may ask? What jazz best suits me? Perhaps this year it will be jazz legend Herbie Hancock, or vocalist/ bassist Esperanza Spalding, pianist/vocalist Patricia Barber or guitar wiz Kurt Rosenwinkel? What ever your tastes are, you will be able to FIND YOUR JAZZ at the 2013 Edmonton International Jazz Festival. With our detailed website along with our festival flyer and program you will be able to make an informed decision as to what artist best suites your tastes. I do encourage you to stretch your musical limits by exploring the unknown artist as it often leads to the most rewarding experience. Jazz music is about a spontaneous experience of the unknown between artist and audience, depending on each other to make this art form come alive. A great amount of time and effort from many committed people contribute to the creation and delivery of this annual festival. We do hope your experience with the 2013 Edmonton International Jazz Festival is a memorable one and something that you will share with others for years to come.

A MESSAGE FROM HONOURABLE HEATHER KLIMCHUK MINISTER OF CULTURE As Minister responsible for culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2013 Edmonton International Jazz Festival! Jazz pianist Enos Payne once said, “Jazz is a feeling more than anything else. It isn’t music, it’s language.” From June 21 to 30, Edmontonians and visitors alike will have the opportunity to connect with the diverse languages of jazz – from avant-garde to volcalese to cool jazz – during this spellbinding annual festival. Featuring talented Alberta-based artists and headlined by worldclass, award-winning musicians Herbie Hancock and Esperanza Spalding, this year’s festival will connect Albertans of all ages to the enthralling energy of jazz music. Through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Government of Alberta is proud to help support this vibrant event. The return on the countless hours invested by festival organizers, volunteers and musicians is seen, heard and enjoyed in every performance. My thanks to the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society and all those who have worked hard to make this event a success. Best wishes for an exciting festival! Heather Klimchuk Minister

AVANT-GARDE: Having more structure than free jazz, avant-garde incorporates ensembles with more of an arrangement. Soloists still explore freedom from conventional rules. Sometimes it is difficult to tell where the compositions end and the improvisation begins (solos are a growth of the arrangement). PETER VAN HUFFEL’S GORILLA MASK P. 43

Alan Jones likes to jump off high places. Off cliffs into the water, where you have to time the waves’ surge just right to survive the plunge. He’ll do a flip, too, 70 feet in the air, just to give it some style. Risky leaps with grace and style: That’s also what the jazz composer, drummer, and bandleader Alan Jones likes in his music. That sense of graceful adventure is what Alan’s compositions are all about. The Alan Jones Canadian All Star Sextet delivers unpredictable improvisations framed by lush melodic passages set in narrative compositions. It’s free, but with a swampy, heavy pocket that offers the romance of risk without complete disorientation.

His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world. The ‘Legend of Mike Smith’ tour sees Soweto Kinch presenting all new material in anticipation of a new album of the same name. The performance draws on Dante and The Seven Deadly Sins, telling the tale of a young MC caught in a very modern world of temptation. Featuring a core trio the subject matter allows Kinch to explore the full breadth of human emotion in Hip Hop and jazz form. ‘I’m really excited about these shows, the stripped trio format allows me more harmonic freedom and space to deliver lyrics. Moreover, I’m excited about integrating new things into the show, such as tenor sax and live looping’ – Soweto Kinch

Although initially formed as a sextet, Peggy decided to expand the group in 2007 by adding tenor saxophone and another electric guitar. The ensemble consists of an all-star group of creative Canadian musicians whose collective experience covers jazz, new music, electronica, free improvisation, as well as classical music and pop. Peggy’s compositions and arrangements cover a wide range of musical terrain––haunting melodies and lush harmonies, driving rhythms, and complex sonic explorations; each piece is constructed with the specific talents of the band members in mind.

Based out of Edmonton, the A/B trio brings together three of Alberta’s most in-demand performing and recording musicians—Thom Bennett, Dan Davis, and Keith Rempel. This new group is inspired by the open sounding, chordless groups of Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker and Joe Lovano’s collaboration with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones. Their material ranges from inventive re-interpretations of standards to modern, original repertoire and high-energy groovebased music. The trio’s format is fresh, and their music is accessible and compelling. They recently released their debut album, Take No Prisoners, composed entirely of original tunes and arrangements done by the group, and featuring special guests Mo Lefever, Chris Andrew, and Bob Tildesley.

ESPERANZA SPALDING RADIO MUSIC SOCIETY JUNE 25 . 7:30PM WINSPEAR CENTRE $49.75 - $70.75
From the beginning of her life to her current success as a creative musician, Esperanza Spalding has charted her own course. The young bassist/vocalist/ composer was one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011—not just in jazz, but in all genres of music. Her receipt of the 2011 GRAMMY® for Best New Artist was unprecedented—the first time a jazz musician had won the award— but Spalding continues to make the unprecedented the norm.
Radio Music Society is another unprecedented chapter in the Esperanza Spalding story, building on her past triumphs and achieving new heights that she will no doubt exceed in the future. “The main way in which the Grammy has changed my life is that I keep getting asked how the Grammy has changed my life,” she says. This will no doubt be a question that Esperanza is asked even more as Radio Music Society has been nominated for three GRAMMY ® Awards: Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists for the track ‘City of Roses’ and Best Long Form Video for the short films that accompany the album. PHRONESIS JUNE 25 . 8:00 & 9:30PM YARDBIRD SUITE YARDBIRD SERIES 1 SET FOR $20 / 2 SETS FOR $30
GREGORY PORTER - VOCALS CHIP CRAWFORD - PIANO EMANUEL HARROLD - DRUMS AARON JAMES - BASS YOSUKE SATO – SAX Some critics are inspired to comment on Porter as a new “king’ of jazz,” and a “leader of the pack,” a performer of extraordinary presence who has been compared with the greatest of the greats, such as Joe Williams, Nat Cole, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye. As musically solid as his recordings are and as powerful and honest as Porter’s magnificent voice is, it may just well be the brilliance of his poetry and the unguarded depth of his emotional delivery that is most fueling his rapid rise to fame.
JASPER HØIBY (DENMARK) - DOUBLE BASS IVO NEAME (UK) – PIANO ANTON EGER (SWEDEN) – DRUMS Scandinavian/British jazz trio Phronesis has the ability to excite, inspire and move people in a way that few bands are able to do. Led by London-based Danish double-bass player Jasper Høiby, their charismatic live performances have captured the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide and prompted Jon Newey (Editor of Jazzwise Magazine) to describe them as “the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST”. Formed by Danish bass player Jasper Høiby in 2005, the energy and individuality of Phronesis comes from an extraordinary democracy of expression and intuitive empathy between the musicians - British pianist Ivo Neame and Swedish drummer Anton Eger come together with Høiby to create a propulsive groovedriven sound that is utterly accessible despite its underlying complexity.
Porter is quick to point out that he is more painter than photographer. “My songs may start from a place of personal experience,” he explains, but he uses his poetic license freely. “I try not to impose any particular perspective on the music. I want listeners to be affected each in his or her own way, and moved as much by what can be read in between the lines as what the lyrics say.”

Country and Klezmer. Other than their super fun and outrageous originals they only play music by Deceased Composers. When the band performs live all the songs are introduced through a ham radio microphone giving them that added old time radio hour sound. Originally hired as subs for regular members of Edmonton Gypsy Jazz band ‘Swing Manouche’, the three immediately recognized what fun it was to play together and formed The Dead Stringers. Since their inception in 2011 they have played the Brandon Folk Music Festival, bars around Edmonton, a few corporate shows, Alberta Culture Days and did their first brief tour of BC and Alberta. By September 2012 they were offered 3 New Year’s shows and the invitations continue. So far they have been offered spots at the Trout Forest Music Festival and Mountainview Festival for 2013. MARIANNE TRUDEL - PIANO, ACCORDION, VOICE, COMPOSITION ÉTIENNE LAFRANCE - DOUBLEBASS, COMPOSITION PATRICK GRAHAM - PERCUSSION TRIFOLIA is the result of a rich collaboration between three accomplished musicians, each with a different palette of colors from which to sketch. Jazz meets world music, meets classical, and the Montreal trio blurs, and then obliterates the boundaries genre expectation, although never straying far from the heartfelt. The name “trifolia” is often applied to a plant that possesses three leaves. In the case of this trio, the three musicians of Trifolia form a dynamic, living unit, sharing with audiences everywhere their passion for heartfelt communication through sound. The encounter of three extraordinary artists of different horizons creates this astonishing musical overlapping of jazz, world music and classical music. The GeoMetrics – their take is an electric mélange inspired by fusion, jazz, funk, progressive rock, and anything else from the band members’ diverse music careers. Flautist/guitarist Bill Damur and bassist Don Bradshaw were part of the electro-acoustic band Möbius, who released their debut CD “Served” in 2005. The GeoMetrics start where Möbius leaves off; the band is pared down to an electric trio with Don and Bill plus Dean Pierno on drums. Their music is best described as rhythmically and harmonically adventurous jazz/rock, wholly original, with elements drawn from European and North American flavours. The GeoMetrics – electric!

Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. In addition to being recognized as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every jazz movement since the 1960s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, he became one of the pioneers of the avant garde sound. His recordings during the ‘70s combined electric jazz with funk and rock sounds in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance music and included several charttopping hits; during the same period he continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P., which included ex-Miles Davis bandmates Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Hancock has received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for his recently released globally collaborative CD, “The Imagine Project.” Many of his compositions, including “Canteloupe Island,” “Maiden Voyage,” “Watermelon Man,” and “Chameleon,” are modern standards that have had a profound effect on all styles of modern music. Since 2005 Afro-Peruvian Sextet leader Gabriel Alegría has devoted his career to exploring the connection between two musical worlds that evolved in separate hemispheres. He has done this as a trumpet player, educator, and composer. Over the past eight years, in tandem with his brilliant band members, Alegría has consolidated these two musical worlds into a vibrant new genre called AfroPeruvian jazz music. The melodic beauty, harmonic sophistication, and rhythmic vitality of this innovative style have never been more evident than on the Sextet’s newest CD, Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings), on Alegria’s own Saponegro (Black Frog) label. “The Afro-Peruvian sensibility with the jazz sensibility is a very organic fit,” he states. “The two attitudes come together very naturally. They flow from one to the other creating a very organic back-and-forth.”

Roberto López puts his own twist of funk and jazz on traditional pieces written by great Colombian composers (Lucho Bermúdez, José Barros, Pablo Florez), as well as his most recent instrumental compositions. Afro-Colombian rhythms carry us on this enchanting journey, making us move to the beats of the porro, the cumbia as well as the paseo, the champeta, mapalé and the chandé. The result is captivating: an exclusively instrumental album that is as groovy as it is brilliant and honestly delightful.

The Writers’ Guild is a jazz composers’ collective featuring five of Edmonton’s finest young creative minds. The band tinkers with the traditional jazz quintet machine, using vintage compositional tools to workshop new tunes and ideas, alchemizing jazz and funk, classical, R&B, and traditional folk musics. The three primary composers in the band are Marty Majorowicz, Dan Davis, and Tyson Kerr. Each has a unique writing style: Marty’s liquid melodies are heavily influenced by the “ECM” sound: artists such as Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland and Tomasz Stanko. Dan Davis’ compositions show a blend of traditional and modern jazz sounds, with catchy melodies over a backdrop of chords which would be right at home in Chris Potter’s latest release. Tyson Kerr’s music, influenced by such Canadian artists as Andrew Downing and David Braid, is impishly quirky. Rounding out the band are two of the strongest young rhythm players in Canada: Josh McHan of the Tommy Banks Trio is by turns brash and lyrical, sawing and sultry, and Efa Etoroma Jr., with four albums to his credit already at the age of 23, is one of Canada’s brightest rising stars. As one of Edmonton’s most exciting and dynamic new groups, the Writers’ Guild makes ink on paper fly.

From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery. Since Barber doesn’t consider herself a poet – and since she didn’t want to be a jazz pianist in the first place – you’d have to say things turned out pretty well.
Djabe is well known as the leading jazz/world fusion band from Hungary. Established 18 years ago, Djabe won numerous domestic and international awards and recognition. Since 2007 Djabe has performed in concert regularly with the former guitarist of Genesis, Steve Hackett. From 2002, the band has played in 42 countries throughout Europe, Asia and North-America.
