Music is one of many ways that TD makes life more comfortable for customers and communities across Canada. And what better way to help people come together than to share in the love of music at major music festivals from coast to coast. We all know that music is the universal language. To paraphrase Diana Krall, when you’re making music, “you’re creating an intimacy that everybody feels, that it’s their experience…” That’s the magic of the Jazz Festival, an event that’s meaningful to everyone in a different way. It’s intensely personal. You can hear music or a song and be transferred back to a specific point in time, to a life event or even to an emotion. TD Bank Group is pleased to bring you the 2015 TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival, a world-class event celebrating the diversity and entertainment of music by talented artists from
This incredible festival would not be possible without the amazing people involved. Thanks to the hundreds of organizers, volunteers, talented musicians and the thousands of fans who make the TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival a hit every year. We invite you to come together for the love of music.

M S. L I SA F I SCH E R & G R AN D BATO N HEADLINE EVENT!
WINSPEAR CENTRE | 7:30PM TICKETS: $40 - $60 (PLUS SERVICE FEES) | NO PASSES. Grammy Award winner Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains and automobiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti, or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not be on the marquee, but she doesn’t care. She’s busy loving every minute of it! It’s easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won’t let go, the infectious quality of her time and feel – these things keep her on top of the list. But it’s the sweetness of her smile, her visible pleasure in watching her bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous-girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she’s their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on ‘Gimme Shelter’ has millions of hits). One of the world’s most famous “backup singers,” Lisa Fischer featured in Morgan Neville’s Oscar-winning 2013 documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom – has toured around the world with musical legends and is becoming one herself.

On Manchester’s grey rain-streaked urban streets they create a brave new sound that is wholly their own. Defined by skittering break-beats, powerful subbass, telepathic interplay and a penchant for anthemic melody they create an emotionally rich palate for the listener that has seen them hailed as the most exciting new band to emerge from the UK in years. WINSPEAR CENTRE | 7:30PM TICKETS: $51.85 - $72.85 (PLUS SERVICE FEES) REID ANDERSON: BASS | ETHAN IVERSON: PIANO DAVID KING: DRUMS | JOSHUA REDMAN: SAXOPHONE The Bad Plus came together at the end of the 20th century and has avoided easy categorization ever since, garnering critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, idiosyncratic personality and flair for live performance. Based in New York City, the deeply collaborative trio constantly searches for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.
THE BAD PLUS JOSHUA REDMAN
A genuinely leaderless trio, The Bad Plus is equal in every respect, from composition to performance to production. The interplay between these collaborators has marked the group’s work from the jump, infusing it with carefully considered spontaneity, subtlety, style, and depth. Saxophonist Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the ’90s and has established himself as one of the most consistent and successful bandleaders. He has worked and recorded with many great jazz artists in various ensemble configurations for two decades. His most recently released recording is Trios Live (Nonesuch – 2014), documenting Redman’s live piano-less trio performances. In 2013, an album of ballads titled Walking Shadows was released (Nonesuch – 2013), Redman’s first recording to include an orchestral ensemble. Always craving new musical exploration, Redman currently continues his role as Artistic Director of Wigmore Hall’s Jazz Series in London, performs globally with his Quartet, tours with his Trio, and continues his work with the collaborative band James Farm. He looks forward to pushing musical boundaries when he joins forces with his friends and colleagues The Bad Plus in this very special concert.

All “sounds like” references can be set aside; Kneebody has created a style and genre all on its own. Kneebody began playing together in the eclectic Los Angeles music scene in 2001. Since then each band member has amassed an impressive list of credits and accomplishments over the years all while the band has continued to thrive and grow in reputation, solidifying a fan base around the world. 19

In this performance, the EJC will present the music of Canadian jazz legend Kenny Wheeler. Canadian-born trumpeter and composer Wheeler established himself in the London jazz scene at an early age in the 1950’s and continued from there to lead a successful and significant international career. Generations of musicians from around the globe continue to be inspired by Wheeler’s composition and arranging as well as his trumpet playing. We sadly lost Kenny Wheeler in September of 2014. It is important to pay tribute to one of Canada’s true jazz icons.
